Friday morning, interesting weather because you know, I live in
Putnam County and zero snow, nothing whatsoever, the grass and
(02:00):
the car is nothing. Driving I sixty four this morning
and I get to about Dunbar and it's like there's
snow now. Granted this is not the Great Blizzard. There's
what you know, maybe half a nanch off even that
out there. Uh, but just interesting that old John Amos,
you know that dividing line that kills all the snow
for Putnam County. Happened that yet again? All right, So
it is championship week in the Charleston. Two games on
(02:21):
the slate today, two tomorrow, Tom Braggs who have joined
Sir momentarily to talk about that. Of course, the big
game of local significance, the Nitro game, the Wildcats taking
on Princeton tomorrow night at Lateleyfield. We're gonna talk later
in the show with Nitro City Council and Joe Murphy
who just happened to play on that Nitro team from
nineteen ninety eight that went undefeated in one of state championship.
Susie Salisbury from the Charleston Airy Alliance is here, and

week from the Gonnal Charleston Humaine Association, plus your calls

the schedule today, the Quad A title game between Morgan
Town in Martinsburg. That's noon. The to night at seven,
(03:02):
it is the Single A game between Wheeling Central and
clay Bettel. Tomorrow at noon the Double A title game
Bluefield and Frankfurt. And then it's seven of my night,
the big one for our area, the Triple A championship
game Morgantown and Nitro. Tom Bragg here to talk about.
It's a good morning, sir, and welcome to the show.
How you doing. I'm good, David. How are you this?
I am doing? Finding you and I were talking off
the air that when Nitro won the championship, the only
(03:26):
other football championship that they won nineteen ninety eight, that
undefeated team, and we're going to talk to remember that
team coming up a little bit later on. But you
were a student there at Nitro at the time. Yeah,
I was a ninth grader. Was that your first year
in ninth grader? Your second year in ninth That was
my first year in ninth grade? Okay, because we did
a couple of extra years in college, but we we
did it. We took him in order in high school.
I got you, I got you.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
Yeah, that was a It was just an incredible season
of football. It was really uh a gift and a curse.
I think you draw all the lines back to how
did I get to where I'm at right now? It
probably goes back to that ninety eight football season, falling
in love with high school football, West Virginia high school football.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
What a run it was on.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
It'll be cool to listen after I leave out of
here when you bring Joe on. There's so many names
coming back to your faces you haven't seen or heard
from in years and years. With with the Wildcats being
back in the state title game, they've played for one
since then. They lost to Morgantown in overtime in two
thousand and five, but they beat the Mohegans at nineteen
ninety eight, that great Jr.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
House team.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
It's it's been a fun week, especially having the games
back in Charleston so there's not a lot of travel
for the Nitro folks. It'll be it should be a
pretty raucous crowd tomorrow evening over at Laidley Field with
Nitro getting essentially a home game here in the Canall
Valley for the state title.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, and that was the Jr. House, Yes, right, that's
what it's goods when somebody sent a text about that,
talk about that what it was like as a student there.
We'll talk to Joe about being being the player, but
just as a as an average student Nitro High School,
because I know, you know when your team is good,
even as a student, there's a feeling around the school
(04:57):
when teams win championship.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
Yeah, and it was I think on another level because Jr.
Was chasing all of those national records that year. He
was getting recruited by every I mean you saw. I
mean this is late nineties, So who were the heavy hitters,
the Florida States, the Nebraska is, the Florida is just
everybody who was everybody in college football is trying to
get this guy to come play for him. It was
like the Beatles were in town every Friday night. That
(05:21):
that game against DuPont and DuPont's last year before they
consolidated and became riverside. But the game at DuPont at Nitro,
I don't the attendance records probably still the attendance record
I've never They were cars parked all the way to
Poka basically still people still walking back to their cars
now that still still are. But the story I always
tell about JR. Houses he was this rock star. Everybody
(05:43):
knew who JR.
Speaker 6 (05:44):
Was.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
It was my second or third day of school as
a ninth grader. I had to do a schedule change.
So I'm in the office. Jr's in there as an
office aid as as a senior superstar quarterback probably is
at a lot of schools, and JR. Is coming through
and he's like, I'm going to darry Queen. You want
to go to Dairy Queen with me? I got to
ride along with dairy with JR. To be the guy
who carried all the Dairy Queen back toward the office people.
And he bought me ice cream too, And I was like, Wow,
(06:06):
what a nice guy. And still like JR. Doesn't know me,
but I can go to a Reds game and get
his attention and say, hey, I went to the He'll
think the second game.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
He loves think.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
I think he think he's not going to be with
the Reds next game. But you know, you know, he's
just awesome, dude. It was, Uh, it was just an
incredible experience. Like I said, it's when I fell in
love with high school football and the reason that you
poor people still.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Have to listen to me talk about it to this day.
Where you missed an opportunity, Tom, is that if you
went to a Reds game when Jr. Was coaching third base,
you could have actually gone onto the field and said, hey,
after the game, I owe you some dairy queens since
you bought for me. That that would have been. That
would have been stellar, That would have been Yeah, I
need to bring you along for those. All right, let's
talk about these games. Yeah, some good games come up.
(06:47):
The Quad A title game actually kicks off at at
noon today Morgantown Martinsborg.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Talk about that, well, it's an interesting man. Hold on, no,
that's right, that's correct out there, that's that's the first
game for A. And I said what I said earlier
was Morganhown was playing Nitro to want it.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
No, no, no, no, Metro plays Princeton tomorrow. I got it.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
I got in the last game. The first game is
today at noon Morgantown Martinsburg in Class four A. And
I think it's a really interesting game. It's the first
time Morgantown's been back in the state championship since they
wanted in two thousand and five when they beat Nitro.
And you know, it's a proud program. They've got an
outstanding quarterback sophomore named Maddox Twig. He's a guy that
a lot of people have tabbed as potentially the Kennedy
(07:27):
Award winner that'll come out here in the next couple
of weeks. But the matchup there against Martinsburg, it's a
tough one. You know, Martinsburg. Maybe at the beginning of
the season, people looked at some of the results and thought, Okay,
Martinsburg's still good, but they're not the Martinsburg that we've
known over the last decade two decades almost going on now.
But here we are. It's state championship weekend. Martinsburg's in
(07:48):
the mix and it's hard to pick against the Bulldogs
when you get to this this time of year. Dave
Walker and that coaching staff and those players have been
around the block a time or two. They are regular
fixtures at this point in the season. So I think
it's a it's it's a tough hill to climb for Morgantown.
I think they have the top seed, but I think
as far as top seeds go, they are certainly vulnerable
(08:08):
for the quote unquote upset against Martinsburg.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Today, all right, and then at noon we've got the matchup.
That's the noon gameclock seven o'clock. I don't know where
my head is today. It's it's still watching the Cowboys
by Detroit. That's what the problem. So the seven o'clock
game should be a good one tonight between Wheeling Central
and Clay Beateel.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Yeah, that's another interesting game. Wheeling Central probably prohibitive favorites
coming in the maroon nights. The number one seed have
been very good all season long. Claybtel, that's a fun
story though. You know, it's kind of the overlooked program,
the overlooked school up in that part of the state,
in Mond County. They had a just an awesome atmosphere
last week, a big rivalry game against Cameron in the
(08:49):
semi final game. CBS get the win in that And
is there a cooler nickname in the state than CD.
They've got to be on the list. I mean, the
Polka Dots, the Man Hill certainly have something to say
about it. But the CEB's what a great name. That's
it's gonna be a tough game for them. It would
be a big upset. I think if Clavetel was able
to win this evening. But that's why they play the games.
(09:09):
They've got a little momentum. I'm certain they'll have. They
might have been able to partner up with Morgantown. Hiw,
I get a deal on some buses. Just bring everybody
down here. The folks over on the university half of
town might not be there, but a whole lot of
folks coming down from that part of the state.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Well, unless remember the mounth in your basketball teams playing
the night a clock over to college. There's that too,
so you probably could have teamed up there, all right,
And then we will move ahead to we up to
Bluefield and Frankfort.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
That's again, I can't Oh, that's gonna be a good game.
There's state championship games. They all probably should be good games.
That's a really interesting matchup. You know, Matt and I
went up made the long trip and saw Frankfort play
against Herbert Hoover this season a game Frankfurt beat Herbert
Hoover in and kind of surprised us. You know, Frankfort
is the defending state champion in double A. But they
graduated a lot of kids. A lot of people thought
they they would still be good, but they might take
(09:55):
a step back, but they're riding, I think going on
a thirty game win streak right now. They are defeated
last year, undefeated this year. Hard to pick against them.
They run a single wing kind of an option attack
that's hard to defend. Talking with Fred Persinger this week, though,
he said the key to that one will be if
Frankfurt can keep up with blue Field speed. Bluefield is
one of the fastest teams in the state. If they
(10:15):
can get guys to the edges, it might be a
long day for some of those Frankfort defenders. So I
think that's going to be a really good game. I
would probably tab Frankfort as the favorite there, but I
think that's going to be a close one.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
All right, let's wrap it up because we're running. We
got to give away a dog here, you know, so
we've got to get to the adoptee. Please better the week.
Let's talk about that game between Nitro tomorrow Night of Brent.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Another matchup of two teams that Matt and I saw
play against Herbert Hoover this year. They're both really, really good.
They do a lot of similar things and two of
the most I mean, throw receiver out of it just
two of the most exciting best players in the state
flat out between Princeton's Brad Mosser and Nitro's Malachai Thompson,
the receiver that signed with WU this week. That one's
going to be fireworks. I wouldn't be surprised if that
(10:56):
was like a fifty to forty type game.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
It's going to be a shootout. Should be a fun one.
All right, Tom, appreciate you being here, my absolutely, Dave,
thanks for having men. What are we gonna do with
you next week? I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (11:05):
We can talk about the World Cup draw that's coming
out today. Maybe a little sock can yea, we absolutely can.
I know we can talk about these games that just happened.
I know that's your thing, but not mine. But I
knew it was a button. You've got some buttons.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
You can educate me.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
Here you go.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
We'll spend the off season teaching Dave soccer. Yeah, there
you go. All right, Tom Bragg, appreciate you being here,

Speaker 8 (11:53):
It is a rather chilly and white fried.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Hey I saw, I told the listeners earlier. You know
where I live in Putnam County, there was not a
single flake of snow, none whatsoever. You're missing, No, I'm
not missing again. This is not the Great Blizzard of
nineteen ninety three here, Okay, We're just talking about a
little little snow in the grass and on the cardtops
and whatever. Do you have a good Thanksgiving?
Speaker 8 (12:17):
I did, other than being sick. Whatever dreams have gone around,
I have caught them.

Speaker 8 (12:41):
Arlow is looks like just like your classic American family dog,
kind of looks like a retriever mix of sorts. He's
great with kids. He has lived with cats before and
done well with them in the home, and he loves
to play with other dogs. If you look at his
picture on the Facebook page, you can't quite tell that
(13:01):
he is missing one of his back legs. I don't
have any information on as to why that is. I'm
pretty sure he just came to our shoulder like that.
But he is an excellent, excellent dog, very smart, two
years old, neutered, update on vaccines and if you don't
get up to the shelter during our adoption special going
(13:21):
until the fifteenth, his fee is sponsored until he gets adopted.
So literally a dog that you cannot miss out on.

And that's Crewton.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (14:27):

him in to see me earlier this week and they
brought me a nice little Christmas gift as well. But Crewton,
I do on two three years ago, we get Kreuton
adopted what a great dog and anytime they're around. If
I'm out about, they'll make a making a point to
try to bring Creuton to see me. So, yep, I

Speaker 8 (14:47):
I'm so glad to hear that. I actually got to
see Hannah yesterday in person and we were talking about

Welcome back to the show. It's nine twenty five at
aave Allan show and find Vinyline brought you fart by
Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm, Ryan Nicholson
as our producer. That we had a text for Angie
and unfortunately she would already disconnected with her when I
got the text. I will try to get an answer,
but a textor wanted to know about Buddy. So dog,
it's it's it's really a gruesome story. And I was
looking I always look around at the Knaw Charleston Newman
(18:11):
Association's Facebook page before I do the show, and Buddy
was a dog that was hit by a car and
his eyes basically popped out. Uh, and they've got a picture,
you know. It's it's one of those. I know we
want to get the dog adopted, but I really wish
I hadn't seen the picture. But I don't know for
your to answer the Textra's question, I don't know how
(18:32):
Buddy's doing. I will reach out to Angie at some point.
When I turned the show over to Susie Salisbury. Here
in a couple of moments, I'll reach out to Angie
and I'll try to find out an update on Buddy's condition.
The aforementioned Susie Salisbury, Charleston Mary Allan says here, Hey,
doing good morning, just fine, thank you on this cold,
kind of snowy December morning. It's it's wonderful. It's just
(18:53):
the season. That's what it's supposed to do. Even it's
a it's a very small amount and to get you
in the Christmas spirit. The reason you're here today, we'll
talk about this window decorating contest. You get go on.
Speaker 11 (19:03):
This is our annual we've probably done it now for
I don't know eight or nine years, and this is
our Holloway Holiday Window Display Contest. So this is a
way that we have found, you know, with Charleston has
become a Christmas town well, no doubt. And you know
we're always looking for ways how can we tie the
(19:23):
businesses directly into a lot of the celebrations. So this
was a way for the businesses who are already decorating
for the holidays anyway, and to have a little friendly competition.
So we started the Holiday window contest. It's free and
that's in thanks in part to Applachimpower, who's our supporter
(19:46):
for the event, and you register and then we have
a best in show, So we have judges that are
going out over the next week and judging a best
in show.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
But we also have the people's.
Speaker 11 (19:56):
Choice, and that's really what I want to talk about
this morning. And this is where where you the listeners,
can pick what your favorite window is in each one
of the neighborhoods. So we have East End, west Side,
Downtown Canas sitting and we have different windows in each
one of those towns. We have about thirty one or
(20:17):
thirty two of them this year. And you can go
around and look at the windows and you will see
a poster in the window. And now I noticed yours
was on the front door this morning.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
We talked about hours a little bit later on because
go ahead.
Speaker 11 (20:28):
There's a QR code on there, so you just hold
your phone up to it, get the QR code and
you can vote either for that window or whatever window.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
That you select.
Speaker 11 (20:36):
But we really encourage, we want the community to come
out and really support this vote for your favorite window
in each one of those neighborhoods. You can vote for
all all in the neighborhoods and let us let us
honor those businesses with their People's Choice Award. When we
were putting the posters out, it was really fun walking
around to a lot of businesses. And I mean these
(21:00):
pysicists take it pretty serious.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Oh yeah, the.
Speaker 11 (21:02):
Ones that have won in the past, you will see
their plaque like right over the register and it's it's
a very visible place and they're they're quite proud. They
put a lot of time and energy and I'm sure
financial resources into making their windows the best that they
can be.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Doctor to Suseye Salisbury again from the Charleston Mary Alliance

I don't I don't know that we have done this
in the past. And I saw some people out there working,
(22:04):
I thought, well, what are they what are they doing we?
I mean, it looks really good what we did. And
I'm not trying to sway voters in any way. I'm
just saying it looks really good and it's a whole scene.
And there are certain members of the staff that made
the cut to be on the window. I did not.
Woody Woods is on the window. I said that we
(22:26):
missed an opportunity by not putting Chris Lawrence up in
a tree aiming at the reindeer, because mister outdoors, we
really missed an opportunity there. But now it's it's awesome.
I mean, it's it's really it's really good.
Speaker 11 (22:39):
It is and it's a team building exercise. We've seen
a lot of the businesses that this gives their employees
something to really rally, rally around and come up with,
you know, how they they what makes them proud of
working in that particular establishment.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
And I think it's really interesting what you said, and
I have said this, and the mayor said this, and
Tim Brady and others have said this about how Charleston
is really kind of becoming a Christmas city, you know,
with this Lango law, like the night which is going
to be continuing through the first of the year, with
everything going on city Center. It's like Plaza, the Holly
Jolly Brawley and so on. The Christmas Parade is one
(23:17):
week from yesterday, It'll be next Thursday night. So yeah,
it's I mean the market, Capital market, what they do,
series events and uh and so just it's it's it's
a Christmas town, man, it really is.
Speaker 11 (23:27):
It's really fun and we are really honored at the
Trusty Area Alliance to you know, be able to really
try to pull the businesses in through you know, pretty
simple is a pretty simple promotion, but a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
And it's it's just.
Speaker 11 (23:46):
It's exciting to see the quality of these displays. I
mean many of them are just remarkable.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Well, and I know this is not necessarily your thing,
but going back, I want to mention about Holly Jolly
Bradley when This thing started with the trees a couple
of years ago. I think they had like eleven and
I think it's one hundred and sixty eight trees that
they've got this year. Over two million lights, well over
two million lights over at Gomart Ballpark for light to night.
So I mean, this town's coming to live for Christmas.
It really is.
Speaker 11 (24:14):
And just personally it's provided like we have a lot
of folks that have come in or from here that
don't live here anymore. They come back and they're like, hey,
will you take us downtown? Will you take us to
the lights? We want to go. We want to visit
Capital Market. We always loved Capital Market at Christmas time
with the trees and the decorations.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Was there My wife and I were there last week.
Speaker 11 (24:37):
Yeah, And I'm like, well, yeah, but you've got to
go around and do the window display competition too, see.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
And how many different businesses did you have? Thirty one
thirty one different businesses? Okay, and you said they're just
like everything else, so many people are competitive, and so
they are very competitive. Yes, we had a textures that
I remember when store windows used to look like Higbees
at the beginning of a Christmas and I'm only fifty two,
so it's the Texter. There you go, there you go.
So that's what we're we're trying to keep that alive.
(25:05):
What are the dates for it again? How long is
People's Choice?
Speaker 11 (25:08):
Voting is opened now and the closest December the seventeenth,
and then on the Charleston Area Alliance Facebook page, we
will announce the winners on Friday, December nineteenth.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
And did you mention what the winners get? They get
a plaque? A plaque okay, okay, yes, and bragging rights
and bragging rights, which is what it's all about. What
else is are you working on at the Charleston Alliance
these days? What else is that you're at?
Speaker 11 (25:30):
You know, lots of great things. We actually yesterday just
hosted a day long Leadership Canal Valley Session. We were
up at Carver and Malden and the Upper Canal Valley area,
so that was really good. We're continuing that through May,
and there's just a wide variety of community and economic
development programs going. And you know, we're still doing the
(25:53):
business after hours and getting ready for issues and Eggs
in January. I'm sure you'll probably have ma back on
about that. Yeah, we get a little bit closer, so
we're staying busy.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Well, that's that's what it's all. We had a texture,
it says, a Christmas staple tradition. I really wanted to
see brought back Santa and his sleigh going around the
roof of the old Charleston National Bank building. I so
want my grandchildren to witness that officially made it the
holiday season in Charleston. Talk about that for those people
that may not know about what you know about it,
because obviously as soon as I read the text you
you lit up.
Speaker 11 (26:22):
Yes, I remember that as a child so vividly, because
that's when you knew the holidays were here.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
When you saw Santa and the slat, that's when Christmas
didn't start in September like exactly that.
Speaker 11 (26:36):
And the it was a tree or star I think
on the newspaper building, and then the BB and T
building had.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
The big tree.
Speaker 11 (26:44):
Those to me were the three markers that the holidays
were here.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
I appreciate you informing the people about that. Now it
is a we've been talking about it all week. What
a busy weekend it is. You're in Charleston. Of course
it's you got the championships going on first game at
noon today. A lot of local emphasis on that seven
o'clock game tomorrow night because it's Nitro, you know, Nitro
and Princeton playing for the Triple A Championship tomorrow night.
Uh So, our and I had on Metro News midday,
(27:10):
we had the Mayor Good one on yesterday, and we
had Tim Brady on and our our hope is is
that when these people come in from and we got
a good cross section of the state that's coming in,
you know, for these games, coming from all areas, is
that they won't just go to the game and go home.
And we and and and we know they won't because
that's just not what people do. You know. We're hoping
that they'll go to Capital Market, that they'll go downtown,
(27:32):
and more importantly, that they'll shop and go to these
local restaurants while they're.
Speaker 11 (27:35):
Here, exactly exactly, And we want them to vote in
the people's choice as well.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
You know here that's actually not a bad idea because
they may not know the particular businesses, and they may
they may not be biased, so you know, they're they're
just voting you know, on what they like, not necessarily
on Well that's my uncle, you know our Princeville, So
I hope they do.
Speaker 11 (27:56):
And then don't forget the WVU.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Basketball next thing. Yeah, six o'clock tomorrow night, the Mountaineers
and the Demi Deacons. Yeah. And the weather actually, I
mean it is December. It is going to be cold,
it's going to be cloudy, but it could be a
lot worse, you know. And we got all these Christmas
parades that are going on and we'll talk about that
a little bit later on. So a lot of the
things going on, all right. Another text for you're popular.
(28:19):
Is there a map of the windows anywhere?
Speaker 11 (28:22):
There is not a map, but on the Charleston Area
Alliance Facebook page you will find the listing of all
of them with the addresses.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
There you go. That's as good as a map, right there. Yep,
Zusie Sawsbury, Charleston areawli. I appreciate you being here. Thanks
a lot, Thank you very much for having me. Dave

or another one. Joe Murphy was on that team. He's
now a Nitro City councilman. He's a business leader, youth
sports leader, and he joins us now via the Big
Pigley Wiggly Hotline. Good morning, Joe, welcome to the show.
Speaker 6 (32:38):
Hey, good morning, Glad to be on air with you.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Thank you for being here. So how does it feel
that you're alma mater a team that you played for
for a championship and won a championship with. How does
it feel just to have Nitro back in it again.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
Yeah, it's great. It feels like it's been too long, right,
and to see the community now coming back in being
involved in being it's it's just great to hear the
buzz around town and it's exciting for sure.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Indeed. All Right, So I want to talk about that season,
and we'll get to the playoffs in the championship, Lader,
but I want to talk about that season. What do
you remember about maybe the August practices going into it,
in the first couple of games, just give us some
memories of the season.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
Yeah, so we came off a tough loss in SMIs
to do contact following year, and so going into August
and over the summer workouts, we definitely were on a mission.
We knew what we had, We knew we could only
beat ourselves. So going into the season, we were definitely
ready and prepared to just to take on everybody.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
Talk about some of those those early games, So you
had just one or two that maybe sticks out.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
Yeah, So the Hurricane game was a tough contest, and
you know, they're always a tough contest, but we only
came away with I think at two point win in
that game, and it was one of those lower scoring
games for us that they always seem to have our
number somewhat to be competitive with us.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
And we're talking to Joe Murphy, who was on that
championship team, talk about some of the teammates. I mean,
everybody thinks about that team. And obviously you know the
first name that pops out of jay our house, but
he wasn't the only player on the team. You were
there and several others. Talk about some of the other
standout players on that team.
Speaker 6 (34:19):
Yeah, So we had a lot of our senior class
with Chris Martin, Zach Collins, Eddie Casto, Matt Brewer, Jesse Wesnooski.
You know, we all came up through the youth football system,
middle school system, and of course Jr. Joined us our
freshman year and came in just like another brother with us,
and we all grew up together. We all hung out
together all through high school and growing up together. So
(34:43):
a lot of great a lot of great talent with
that senior class.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
And I mentioned this earlier that when we had Tom
Bragg on top of the show. Of course he's a
Nitro guy. He went to high school there as well,
and he was talking about and I know this from
my alma mater, when even those of don't play sports
when you have a good thing going and you can
rally the entire not only the entire school, but but
(35:07):
rally the entire community around something like that. Man, it's
a good feeling, is it not.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
Oh, it's a great feeling. And you know, us being
seventeen eighteen year old kids going around town and everybody's
coming up, shaking your hand, they know who you are,
They're patting you on the back, kids are asking for autographs.
You know, you're eating it all up, eating it all up.
But you know, so one thing that we could shift
and transition to is when we stepped on that football field,
you know, it was all business and we we knew
we were on a mission. And so but yeah, it's
(35:35):
always good eating up that stuff as a young kid
like that.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
Oh yeah, especially in a smaller area. And I mean,
you know, we outside of the Charleston area. Everybody looks
at Charleston as being a you know, the big city.
But I mean it's still it's still especially Nitro. I mean,
Nitro is one of my favorite communities because it's like
everybody seems to no matter what's going on in Nitro,
everybody seems to be all in on it, whether it's
sports or anything else, one hundred percent.
Speaker 6 (36:01):
We have a lot of great things going on in
our city at all times, and everybody seems to be
involved in it want to be involved. We have a
great volunteer or group in Nitro of a massive amount
of volunteers that help with everything from sports to to others.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
You know, welcome to Joe Murphy again, who was on
that championship team back in nineteen ninety eight for Nitros,
now in Nitro City councilman, business leader, doing a lot
of great things in the community. All right, let's fast
forward to the playoffs. Now Nitro's in the playoffs nineteen
ninety eight year memories of the playoffs and then onto
the championship.
Speaker 6 (36:34):
Yeah, so, you know, Huntington the second round was a
pretty tough test. It was a day game, and it
came down to, you know, towards the end, toward the
last drive for us to be able to pull that
one away. And then of course the biggest game to
me was definitely the Parkersburg game. Going up to Parkersburg,
as you know, we were number three seed, they were
the number two, so we had to travel to them
(36:56):
for the semi finals, and I tell you what, that's
a crowd. I've never seen another crowd like it. People
were jumping the walls trying to get in. Fire Marshall
was shutting down the entry. I mean, it was it
was a lot of insane and intense environment. For sure.
You know, we're coming in as a visitor, so it
was it was intense for us as well. But it
was it was awesome. You know, you're soaking it all in.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Talk about the championship game when you played Morgantown.
Speaker 6 (37:20):
Yeah, so the championship game, it was you know, the
night before we went and watched DuPont get beat and
that's somebody, you know, from our local area. So of
course we were rooting for them, and that was a
tough thing to go back to our hotels with. So
the next morning we're all getting together, We're talking and
getting the game playing together. You know, coach Robert Burdett's
one of the best hype coaches out there in the game,
(37:42):
and he could always get us going. It's always tough playing,
you know, at noon instead of seven o'clock a night game,
so adjusting to that. But yeah, going into the game,
we were on a mission to just we were gonna
hammer them, hammer, hammer, hammered. So very first play, what happens,
We throw an interception, they run it down to the
two guards line, and then if you remember Chris y Era,
(38:04):
he ran in the score and so they went up
six nothing and we were like, oh no, So but
then we settled down. I think we went in the
halftime at forty two to six, so we settled down
pretty quick and started putting points on the board. But yeah,
it just ended up being a magical day. It was
just it was. It was amazing just watching watching Jr. Throw,
(38:26):
watching our receivers, you know, cats. It was just fun
to even just just have witness it as a fan,
even I know I was out there playing, but just
as a fan to watch it was something amazing. It's
something high school sports didn't have a run of shoot
offense like we did, especially in West Virginia in that time,
So to just be a part of that was awesome.
Speaker 3 (38:44):
What was the weather like in that game? Do you remember?
Speaker 7 (38:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (38:48):
It was chili. You know, of course, you know the
eighteen year old we're all out there in short sleeved shirts.
But it was definitely a it was a chili day.
It's probably gonna be about the same, I think weatherwise,
you know, men thirties.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Yeah, so aut this team this year, what's your what's
your take on on this year's team that's playing for
the championship tomorrow night at seventh.
Speaker 6 (39:06):
You know, they've they've really progressed over the last few
weeks too, and their game against Chapmanville is the best
I've seen them this year. And I think as long
as they maintain a good balance with you know, the
pass and run, you get Radcliffe Porter getting some yards,
chunking up some yards on the ground and try to
get it to Thompson out in there. I mean, Stuffy's
(39:27):
got to be able to get it to Thompson. Let
Thompson do his thing once he catches it. He's pretty amazing.
Once he catches that ball, you can tell why he's
a D one athlete. So exciting to see, you know.
And then of course defensive side, we got to get
Patterson and Nuss you're in there and getting some penetrating
at the line and getting in the backfield and creating
a havoc back there like they've been doing all year.
(39:48):
All right, so it should be a good.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
We're all excited about it. Here in the valley. I
can tell you that we're all excited about all the games,
but especially when we get a little hometown flair. Hey, Joe,
I appreciate you taking time under scheduled to be here
with us today. Man, great memories. I appreciate you being here.
Speaker 6 (40:04):
Yeah, no problem with one other titch on third for
Nighter High school Athletics. You know, twenty twenty five of
the pretty amazing year five. This is the fifth team
going to a state championship this year, going back to
the spring. So when the spring we had girls and
boys basketball, fall, we've had girls and boys soccer, and
now we're football. So it's amazing for our small little town.
(40:24):
I just want to throw that plow absolutely.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
I guess I hadn't realized that, but one per I mean,
we'll start calling it, you know, the championship the nightro
the city. Well, I think there's already I said to you,
we'll come up with the Joe Stevens will come up
with a really really cool name. All right.
Speaker 6 (40:39):
Oh yeah, Joe's good at that.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
We'll put that on Joe and mayor caseball. All right,
all right, Joe Murphy, I appreciate you being here, buddy,
Thanks a lot.
Speaker 6 (40:46):
Yeah, I appreciate it, thank you.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
All right, it's ninety eight. A couple quick programming notes.
Of course, all the championships are going to be on WCHS.
You can stream the video feed at Metro News Television,
so if you haven't yet gotten that app make sure
that you do so. Tomorrow morning, we're going to a
special you don't want to miss. It's going to spotlight
the old Charleston High schools. Three straight undefeated season, three
(41:08):
straight championships, I should say tomorrow morning that's at ten six.
You don't want to miss that. I mean, it's a
run that this city has never, never really seen before.
So we're going to have that for you coming up
to on the WHS tomorrow morning at ten o six.
Then tomorrow night at six oh five, we have an
expanded pre game to get you ready for the Nitro
(41:29):
and Princeton TRIPAA Championship game. Dale Cooper's gonna host it
along with our some of our sports team members, folks
from the Nitro community and more six oh six tomorrow evening,
and it is sponsored by the Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureau.
All Right, we had a text earlier somebody wanted to
know about one of the dogs that is featured on
(41:49):
the Kneal Trothy Main Association's Facebook page, and it was
really kind of a sad story. The dog's name was Buddy,
and he was hit by a car and his eyes
and I have a trouble even saying this, but this
was the description. His eyes basically popped out, and there
is a picture posted on the Canege Trothuman Association's Facebook page.
(42:11):
During one of the breaks there, I was able to
text Angie Gillenwater and I ask her because the text
came in after we'd already disconnected with Angie.
Speaker 6 (42:20):
He is.
Speaker 3 (42:22):
The Buddy is stable and still learned. This is Angie's words,
trying to navigate the world, and she says a lot
of questions still answered regarding vision until he fully heals,
but they're stain optimistic. So appreciate Angie doing double duty
and texting this that. And we're gonna take a break
when we come back. Let's just go on over to
the field. Dave Wilson will be calling some action over there.
We'll check in with Northern Day when we come back.

Northern Dave, is already on site over there, mister Wilson,
Good morning, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 7 (45:34):
Good morning Dave.
Speaker 3 (45:35):
That's pretty much the extent of a conversation between me
and Wilson right there, Kam. It's like, Hey, we're one
step away from going Hello Newman.
Speaker 7 (45:46):
The question is who would be Newman?
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Yeah, I think we're both Newman. I'll be honest with you.
I don't think either one of us is cool enough
to be Jerry Seinfeld. I think we're probably both Newman
all right, so you got to call on the first
game today? Is that right?
Speaker 7 (45:57):
Yes, sir, be along with the Fred Persinger at noon
Morgantown and Martzburg for the Glass four A title.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
All right, what's the How are things looking over at
the field right now? Everything looking good? I mean we
had we had a little bit of snow here in Charles,
not a lot, but a little bit of snow.
Speaker 7 (46:10):
I mean, this is great football weather. It's coldest snowing.
What else would you want for a championship game? Now,
it's gonna be a little slip going I think out
on the field there is a fine layer of snow
that's gonna meld off and go away. But the field's
going to be I think a little bit slick. We'll
see how the guys handle it. Both these offenses focus
on the quarterback Brian Dick for Martinsburg Mattox Twig for Morgantown,
(46:31):
and they're both of them make plays with their legses capability.
They're both the leading rushers for their teams, so we'll
see how that factors in. Again, this is artificial turf,
so it's not like it's gonna be muddy or anything, Dave,
but could be slick, especially at the beginning of the
ball game.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
So talk about some of the other matchups. How many
games are you doing?
Speaker 7 (46:52):
So I'll be doing this one on radio. I'll be
doing color on television tonight with Kyle Wigs for Clay
Betel and Wheeling Central CBS in their first ever championship game,
taking on a Wheeling Central program that has twelve titles
in thirteen trips to the state championship game, but this
group's making its first appearance in six years. That's coming
up tonight tomorrow Frankfurt and blue Field. Frankfort going for
(47:15):
back to back titles. Blue Field, of course a team
that has been a regular in the championships over the season,
so that should be a good matchup. And then finally,
Nitro and I just went totally bright Princeton Princeton, Princeton, Princeton,
Nitro and Princeton. That game could have one hundred and
twenty points score between the two teams by the time
it's over. So I think we want to have four
(47:36):
really good ball games here today, all.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
Right, And again we're going to have all the games
here on WCCHS. We also are going to be streaming
all the games on Metro News Television, So if you
haven't yet download the app, make sure you do. Wilson,
all right, our conversations over.
Speaker 7 (47:49):
All right, Hey, turn the TV app on, then turn
the volume down, turn the radio up.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
There you go, that's what you do, all right, Wilson,
appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lo. I have
a great broadcast, all right, thanks Dave? All right? Nine

(48:13):

to ten oh six tomorrow morning, I'm sure it will.
I don't know that for one of I mean, we
podcast pretty much every special program we do here, so
I don't know that for a fact, but I'm going
to probably say yes, Texas, Dave. How about them Cowboys?
I knew that was coming first. Their offense was a problem,
got it? Fixed and the defense did what they did
(48:34):
and got helped out with some trades. Now the special
teams decided to take the night off for whatever reason.
The Cowboys are playing whack them all, trying to fix
their issues. What's next? Are the goalposts going to fall over?
Says a Texter. Yeah, it's it's it's possible. Coming up

the broadcasting world sixties and seventies. He was with CBS
and NBC. A native of Saint Albans, you see graduates.
He is of course into West Virginia Broadcasting the Hall
(50:20):

But yeah, I saw, I saw someone had posted that,
and I was just texting back and forth with Mark
Curtis will be joining us on the show today to
talk about the career of Ed Rabel. You talk about
a Hall of Famer from right here in Canawa County. Man,
he was, yeah, and man, what a legend, And just
a lot of the legends are unfortunately they're coming to
(50:41):
that time. Yeah, but you know Ed was always really
good too. He would drop an op ed then and now,
trying to be a voice of reason with everything that
was going on, so he'd still have an occasional op ed.

to the Rebel family. Indeed, all right, what you got

But anyway, you know, Dave, the Data Center bill passed
this last session. Part of that is making legislative rules
on how to cite these facilities. Those rules are out.
Public comment is going that actually ends December the tenth,
(51:33):
So Nick's going to come in. We're going to talk
about these rules, how the sighting process works, what kind
of feedback they're getting, talk about a few of the
specifications that are put into these rules that are being proposing.
