This is the dragon Con pregame showpowered by Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space
Science Center, where you can learnthe science behind the fiction. My guest
is cosplay model, performer, gamingtwitch personality Angie Star. Hi, Angie,
Hey, thank you, Thank youfor having me. We have We've

(00:23):
known each other for years and yearsand years because of dragon Con, and
this will be the longest conversation thatwe've ever had. I mean, we've
texted, we've done that, We'vesent in messages to each other, but
this is this will be the longesttime we've actually taught because of dragon Con.
Well, we see each other andthen there's photos, and then we
just move on and then after wemightish through the chaos, that's right,
and then we rec and we talkabout whatever we whatever you were wearing that

(00:47):
year. I'm only just kind ofin more recent years gotten into cosplaying myself
just because of the group that Igo with. But this is a lot
of dragon Cons for you. You'renot quite as many as I've done.
I'm not saying that to flex.I'm just saying that because I know it's
a few less than me. Butwhat was your first year going to drawing
around. My very first year wasin two thousand and nine and mine was

(01:10):
over one oh one. And youhave you been consecutive? I know we
had the twenty twenty year that wasweird, but yeah, I was,
yeah, well, not counting thatCOVID year, I missed one year in
twenty thirteen, I believe, ButI've gone consecutively ever since. I perform
that late night event they have inthe Marian Atrium ballroom every year for secret

(01:34):
parties, and so it's it's justbeen a really I don't know, it
gives me incentive to go every singleyear. Besides like meeting it's kind of
like costplay con family, you knowwhat I mean. So you see these
people once a year and it's youknow, it's always like that's part of
the fun is meeting more like mindedplayers. And I like the facts of

(01:55):
you know what you love too,you know. Yeah, And I like
the fact that because it's diverse withwhat you see and experience a dragon Con,
that you meet people that you probablywouldn't have met in any other circumstance.
Yeah, exactly. People come fromall over It's I mean, people
from other countries and that would cometo Dragon Con and it's a beautiful thing

(02:15):
to the Usually that's the weekend wherethere's the college football season starts. There's
usually a kickoff game right up theroad. There are people that book hotels
because they say, oh, there'sa cheap hotel. I don't know what
this means, Dragon Con type itin and if they're lucky enough to get
a hotel, and then they're thereand then they say, oh my gosh,
what is going on here? Andthen a few hours later they're into

(02:38):
it, like they've gone to thegame, they've come back. Maybe they've
had a few beers at the game. I don't know, but they get
back to the hotel and they're allin. They're like, this is amazing.
We're coming back next year. Andthat's what's also really fun. That
fantom that was literally me the firstyear. I had friends that brought me
in. They're like, Angie, you're gonna love this. Okay. See,

(03:00):
I was greeted by a man thatwas dressed like the Incredible Hulk,
who had like prosthetic muscles blue tohis body that were painted green and a
cardboard tank and he literally I followedhim to a room where I was then
greeted by a wizard and a wheelchairwho asked me if I would like some
Blue Elixir, which was like thisalcoholic beverage they made in their hotel room

(03:23):
party. And from that moment on, I was just completely sold. I
reckon, It's like, this isridiculous and amazing. I know the guy
that you're talking about dressed like ahulk, like I don't know what personally,
but I know I remember him andI know who you're talking about.
And he was at the costume contestand he was on stage and he threw
the tank in the air and thenhe fell, he fell off the stage.
I remember that. It was justbut there's so many things that you're

(03:45):
gonna see and you just don't reallyknow what you're going to experience every year.
So think about how much it haschanged and progressed from the first year
that you were there, Oh mygod, and have just gotten way more
intense. It's gotten literally there's somany more people now, so the chaos
and getting moving through, there's likestructure. You literally we have groups now

(04:06):
where we're just like coaching people andhow to survive Dragon Con. So like
there's like survival kits, right soyou need your phone charger, you need
a portable charger, you need handsanitizer, you know, all these little
things that you want to have onyour person because getting to your hotel room
might be an impossible mission because thehotels, like all the elevators are congested

(04:28):
and the stairs are congested. It'sjust like it's a whole thing. You
have to plan now. You justyou can't show up and go. It's
fine, but be prepared there.Comfy shoes, yeah, shoes, and
deodorant is always and you have toremind them to dry here, gotta stay
hydrated. We have a few othertips, and it's interesting that you you
mentioned that because some of the tipsthat like my group will do is we'll

(04:51):
have a word each year that wejust sort of shout out and that lets
everybody know where you are and ifyou hear that word. One year it
was just the word science. Wewould yell out science, like from the
song She Blinded Me with Science,Science, and then we knew where they
were and we could sort of andthen we have different parts of the hotels
that have nicknames because we have storiesfrom so many years of going. Then

(05:15):
we can reference, like you know, go to like, there's a one
particular part of the Marriott. There'sa restaurant there called Seer, And so
if we're going to be anywhere nearSeer, we'll refer to it as Sears,
and we'll say we're going to beover by Sears. So we just
have little areas that you know,we hung out with certain people in certain
areas, so we all know whatthose code words mean. So those helped
too. And then to one ofmy friends who kept telling me, yeah,

(05:39):
I'm near the elevators. It's likethere's a lot of floors. There's
so many elevators then you could beon any floor, so those don't work.
The half is helpful. It isalso for finding people in this year.
I noticed that they have incorporated kindof like AI, so you can
actually see where your friends are aliveif you friended at somewhere and followed them.

(06:00):
Oh, that it's going to besuper helpful, kind of like when
you share location on maps. That'sreally good. I haven't loved that yet.
Yeah, I haven't actually downloaded theapp because I've been in mode of
prepping for you know, interviews andthings for this show. And yeah,
so as far as cosplay, goesand last year, I guess right after
dragon Con I was sending you,I was going through some old galleries of

(06:23):
photos and it was almost like aWhere's Waldo of you? Because it was
like every year for several years,we would just have a photo either with
you or of you, or youare part of a group. And your
cosplay has improved significantly. I thinkeverybody has has upped I mean ultimately the
goal just because you get more involvedin it and then you start wanting to

(06:44):
actually plan for it and you spendmore time on it. Now honestly,
we're gonna spend we spend like monthsworking on a costume is going to turn
out hopefully better than the one youwere Like, I guess I'll go to
dragon Con this weekend. I interviewedAdam Savage and he is very much a
cosplayer, He's one of us ina big way. And he offered some
advice just reminding people that you know, the costume is never done, it

(07:08):
doesn't have to be perfect, andit's never finished and it's okay. And
I thought that was great advice. That's that's what every coswayer needs to hear.
I think in the final stretch asthey're getting ready to go to dragon
Con and they know they're going tostill be doing prep in the room.
Yeah sure, yeah, we've alreadyplanned that. Always bring your kid.
Dragon Con has the little area whereyou can go and get like you know,

(07:30):
safety pins and hot glue or whateveryou're you know, a little like
for the name, they have likean area where you can go and like
get things last minute if you needhelp with something. They're almost like cosplay
EMTs or something. Yeah, that'sit, and they walk around there's something
that walk around con with little packsor like same bay my button popped off
or something. So yeah, Idefinitely packed my own. I want to

(07:54):
ask a little bit about what you'regoing to be wearing this year, but
we'll get that in a second.I want to get your thoughts on what
it cosplay will be this year.Last year, there's a lot of Stranger
Things. That season had just comeout, so there were a lot of
uh Stranger Things cosplays, and therewere a few movies that had kind of
hit right then. This year,I think I got an idea of what's
going to be really big. Ithink there's one thing that should probably really

(08:18):
stand out. I just wanted toget your thoughts on it. Yeah,
for sure. I mean, obviouslythe Barbie movie. There's gonna be so
many Barbies, I feel like,and Ken's and Alan's, but I think
I think the main I would loveto see it. And I've already heard
a couple of people that are workingon theirs from Diablo for the Lilith cosplay
that that one. I feel likeit is going to be definitely a dragon

(08:41):
Content's here. I'm no for sureI'm going to see it. I just
hope I get to see one that'slike very elaborate with the prosthetics and everything.
I would love to see it.I hope we get a like a
Barbie Himer or whatever the you know, I want to see that. I
want to see that hybrid. AndI feel like we will see it's very
dee. You know, it's anOppenheimer and Pink. That would be amazing

(09:03):
because I do think this is gonnabe the year of pink. There's gonna
be pink everywhere this year, andthat's gonna be okay. I feel good
about the fact that that is kindof just set itself up nicely for a
big theme for this year. Andyou mentioned games, so when you are
playing. So some people know thisabout me. I actually invented twitch.

(09:24):
I invented twitch long before twitch wasa thing. So U doing TV.
We used to play games on liveTV and people would watch his play games
and that was like, uh,gosh, it's a long time ago.
It's probably U ninety See when youstart saying ninety it was ninety seven,

(09:46):
ninety six, ninety seven that wewere doing that. So I feel like
twitch owes me a few dollars.Like I feel like, you know,
just from that, should I missedmy chance? My I was student,
I was doing it so long agothat it wasn't it was on TV,
like, it wasn't even on acomputer. Yeah, we were public TV.

(10:11):
I remember public TV because that's howI got my starting broadcasting. And
we, you know, we onenight we didn't have anything prepped, and
we were like, hey, we'rejust gonna play games, and we broke
out the you know, Nintendo, and we were playing games. That's what
we were doing back then. Ilove it. So what games are you
playing now? And what are yourfavorite games to play? Like, because
people watch you play games and you'replaying and you're interacting with them. I

(10:35):
mean, that's the essence of itfor folks who don't know. But what
are you playing now and what areyou looking forward to that it'll be coming
out soon. Nice. So I'vebeen playing Diable before religiously. But everyone
has mixed feelings about that game. But I'm just gonna say for me personally,
I love it because I've played witha group of people. If you've
tried to play Gabble before by yourself, it's gets boring. You have to

(10:58):
play with run, but it's Ilove that. It's like my thing.
I love playing RPGs with friends likewhat I love so that I played a
lot of it, I want todo something really quick. I'll play Fall,
guys. I'll just play because it'sjust ridiculous and it's fast. It's
quick. I can just jump onlineand play a few rounds and then we
can log off. It's fine. But oh god, I just got Balder's

(11:20):
Gate, which is the RPG gamethat's gotten a lot of stigma because you
can romance everyone and it's kind ofgraphic. It's interesting. I saw some
video clips. I haven't started toyet. I literally just downloaded it yesterday,
So I'm gonna live stream that laterjust to see what all the hypes
about. We'll see is anybody onTwitch playing like Donkey Kong? Like is

(11:41):
that is? Because I feel likethat would be my sweet spot. You
know. There are people that speedrun Mario brother a game. Yeah,
stuff like that. Yeah. Ihaven't seen Donkey Kong specifically. I don't
know. I'll probably there. Peopleplay everything. There's always something. It
was. It was like Super Technoballis what we were playing on TV back
when I feel like I should yourecord? You still have those recordings?

(12:05):
I'm sure I do. As someoneyou can start YouTube bring it back.
I would think it would be therewould be a place for it, you
know. But I just feel likeif I could just play Donkey Kong,
I would be all three of theDonkey Kongs. And the commentary is good
enough people will watch. That's whatit's really all about, as the commentary
ultimately. All right, So asfar as uh your cosplays for this year,

(12:31):
what are you planning and do youhave them planned out night by night
already? I do? I do. Actually, we have a really funny
ours this year as a group cosplay, and we're doing every single version of
Kirby but the sexy version. Sowe've got these little pink body suits with
the giant you know, those stupidred boots, the Astra boots. Finally

(12:52):
an excuse to wear the Astra boots. So we're on to be wearing those
with little Kirby faces. And we'reall doing different you know how if you
played Curb, there's all the differentversions. So we've got like the one
with the mallet and the one withthe little swoord it looks like link.
We've got the one eating everything, and I've got the star wand and so
it's just gonna be really cute girlgroup. We're gonna be at you know,
on Thursdays the Dragon Con, theyhave the Bunny Hutch party. You

(13:15):
take any costume, any fandom andyou make it a bunny. That's the
whole theme. And it's gotten bigger. I remember when it first like back
when it was first starting and there'smaybe like a hundred people, and now
it's like I'll like literally lying aroundthe building to get into that thing.
It's crazy, and so yeah,I'll be attending that. We're gonna be
there as Kirby Bunnies this year.On Thursday Friday, we're doing Star Wars

(13:37):
theme. I'm bringing back my Raycosplay. We have a whole group for
that because there's that event that Ithink it's the last party on all Dron.
It's usually Friday, so it waslike a Star Wars party Friday,
and then Saturday, I'll be dancingthat event in the mary An Atrium ballroom
or Secret Parties, and that's justkind of like an e Girl theme.

(14:00):
It's easy. But during the dayI'll be wearing that Kirby outfit again,
just because I want to do itwithout the bunny years and actually wear like
the little Wig and have like thestars and everything. I went to Universal
this year and experienced Super Mario orOld and so I got the star like
bag actual one and then it's socute, and so I'm gonna be wearing

(14:20):
that. It is my first. And then on Sunday, I was thinking
of wearing my s Free Fighter Cammy, bringing her back because everyone loves Cammie
and they just remade the game andlike remodeled her a whole look, but
it's got pants now and a wholedifferent vibe, and so I was like,
Okay, I'm still gonna do theclassic Cammy, but I love her,

(14:41):
So I mean, do it allthe spots I can. I put
on pants when it's already so hotall night, so hot, literally one
hundred degrees outside today, and beready, be ready. That's right.
And I already use those sky bridgesyou're gonna want to, No, don't
use the sky bridges. Those forthose of us that already know about the

(15:01):
sky bridges. Everyone let you gooutside. We don't want to offer any
anybody any tricks. Now you're mentioningthe secret party, but you're not really
keeping a very secret. You're justtalking secret parties. I know. Well,
it doesn't start till three am.So there's that dragon Con. Everyone
is like, come to the officialafter party for dragon Con. And I
always laugh because dragon Con doesn't stopand all the events and things happening.

(15:24):
If you're into that, are adddragon n So I just kind of laugh.
I'm like, you guys are funny. No one going to dragon Con
will be going outside of dragon Conto do that afterparty. Dragon Con is
the Tuesday after Labor Day, Likethere's no like, yeah, there's no
afterparty. In the middle of thenight. There's always something going on and

(15:46):
it doesn't sleep. Yeah, youmight get a small little window where things
kind of slow down a little bit, but they don't stop. They never
ever stop, and there's always somethinggoing on. So for folks that so
they know, how do they knowwhere you're, what you're going to be
wearing, what to look out for? Anybody that wants to uh watch you

(16:07):
on Diablo four? Yeah, I'mon Twitch? Yeah how do they find
you? Star with two rs?Like a Pirate Earth? And then your
social media is as well. Yeah, so on Instagram it's also miss Angie
Star with two rs. And myFacebook is Dancing Angie Star because I performance,

(16:33):
I'm in costume. You should that'swhat you know, that's what you
that's what you do with the secretparties. And I'd just like to point
out the fact that all these yearsand you've never once invited me to the
secret party. So, well you'reinvited. Oh nice. I am usually
asleep by three am. I knowmost people are. Well, somehow we
still pack that ballroom. They're abouttwo thousand people that enter at three am.

(16:56):
They're still going strong. Well I'mthere working, so I have to
get some sleep. Yeah, youhave to be okay during a day.
I do, But we'll see.I don't know. Maybe maybe I can
work at three am. We'll findout. Uh, Angie Starr, thank
you so much. Has been fun. Yes, thank you for having me.
Look it's great. Look you can'twait to see you dragon Con.
Oh, I can't wait. It'sgoing to be fantastic and it's coming up

(17:18):
fast. This is the dragon Conpregame show powered by Columbus State University's Coca
Cola Space Science Center, where youcan learn the science behind the fiction.
