The 2008 federal grand jury proceedings against Jeffrey Epstein represented a moment when the full scope of his criminal conduct was beginning to come into focus at the federal level. Investigators subpoenaed witnesses, gathered victim testimony, reviewed flight logs and financial records, and presented evidence that went far beyond the limited state charges later pursued in Florida. That evidence pointed to a coordinated operation involving recruiters, enablers, and facilitators who helped Epstein access minors and maintain control over them. Despite the breadth of the federal investigation, the grand jury materials were sealed, the case was effectively abandoned, and Epstein was allowed to walk away with a non-prosecution agreement that foreclosed federal charges and kept both victims and the public in the dark about how extensive the case had become.

That secrecy has now been pierced by the newly unsealed documents released under the Epstein Transparency Act passed by Congress, which have given fresh life to what was once buried. The unsealing has revealed how serious the federal inquiry actually was and has allowed the public, for the first time, to hear directly from a federal special agent describing how investigators identified multiple co-conspirators during the grand jury process. These disclosures reframe the 2008 proceedings not as a weak or incomplete investigation, but as a suppressed one—where substantial evidence existed, names were known, and accountability was halted by design rather than lack of proof. With these records now public, the narrative that Epstein acted alone becomes increasingly untenable, and the focus shifts back to the network that federal investigators had.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
where we left off with the Special Agent giving testimony
to the Grand jury in two thousand and seven. Question, Now,
everyone was handed a copy of a document entitled Merge
Flight Manifest. If I could ask you to take a

(00:21):
look at that and in the proposed indictment, if you
could turn to page thirty two, Special Agent redacted is
going to ask you about overt acts one ninety one
through two twenty five. Can you tell the grand jury
what the basis is for the allegation set forth in
one ninety one through two twenty five. Answer. We received,

(00:42):
through the issuance of a grand jury subpoena, the flight
manifest from mister Epstein's pilot, and that is our evidence
to show the travel that mister Epstein did, which is
displayed in overt Acts one ninety one through two twenty five,
and the chart that is entitled Merge Flight Manifest. What
does that include? That's the question. Answer. This chart will

(01:04):
show the grand jury that in January of two thousand
and four through basically mister Epstein's travel in four and
five on his two personal aircrafts, which would be the
Boeing seven to twenty seven and the golf Stream. If
you look at this chart, the first column is the
dated departure, the date that he left, and you'll see
the airport codes in the next column that tells you

(01:26):
the airport that he left and what time he left
would be the next line the departure time. It will
tell you what airport he was arriving in and what
time he arrived at that airport. And the last would
be the actual aircraft itself, which aircraft he was traveling on.
And just to remind the Grand Jury hyperion is the

(01:47):
golf Stream and jege is the Boeing seven twenty seven.
Question and who created this chart the merged flight manifest chart?
Answer the FBI question and where did they gather this
information from? Answer? We subpoena or the Grand Jury issued
a subpoena to the pilot and pilots of mister Epstein,

(02:08):
and through council, the pilots gave us a copy of
the flight manifest for those two years. And I have
here a set of flight manifests that were provided to
us by the Grand Jury subpoena and have marked each
one of them the overt acts from one ninety one
to twenty five, so that if anytime the Grand jury
would like to come and look at the actual manifest

(02:28):
the pilots gave us, you'll be able to see the
date that this form was taken from. Question. Okay, thank you,
Miss villa Fauna. Before I go on, does anyone have
any questions about those overt acts and where this information
came from? Grand Juror? Is there something that ties in
these travel itineraries to the actual fact that there was

(02:50):
a meeting or something planned? I mean, where does that
tie together? Traveling is not against the law, Miss villa Funa. Right.
The way that we had this indictment organized before was
an attempt to do this in chronological order, which seems
to be more confusing rather than less confusing. So when
you look at the testimony, when you hear the testimony

(03:11):
from Special Agent redacted, and when you look at the
overt acts related to the victims and when he went
to see them, you'll see that the dates of travel
relate to the date of his meeting with the victims.
Does that make sense, Grand Juror? Yes, Miss Villafauna. Question,
is there anything else Special Agent redacted that I should
add to that answer. No, it will become clear once

(03:35):
we testify about the travel count. Grand Juror, can I
just ask which airport is ism the witness? You know
I can in the next session. I would be happy
to bring the airport codes, Grand Juror. Okay, the witness
obviously we focused in on his time when he traveled
into the Palm Beach County area, and that would be

(03:55):
PBIA or PBI. But I can certainly provide all the
airport code at our next session. Ms. Vilafauna. Question, all right, now.
Throughout the overt acts portion, where there are discussions of
various jain, does there will be mentioned a telephone call?
For example, if you look at page ten, paragraph seventeen,

(04:15):
it says, Honor about April twenty third, two thousand and four,
redacted place to telephone call to a telephone used by redacted.
Do you see that? Answer? Yes, Question and Special Agent,
what is the evidence that we have related to the
telephone calls that are mentioned in the overt acts? Answer?
We have issued administrative subpoenas for telecommunication companies for cell

(04:39):
phone records for mister Epstein's assistance, as well as many
of the Jain Does. These specific overt acts are reflected
in those telephone records, and we have also prepared for
the grand jury. I brought with me today and I'll
bring with me the next time all the telephone records
for that we have received via administrative subpoenas. Today I

(04:59):
brought the ones pertaining to the overt acts. And what
we have done is we have taken those cell phone
records and we have marked for the grand jury all
the overt acts that are listed in the indictment. You'll
note that when you go to the page, there will
be a little mark by the telephone call that we
are specifically talking about in the overt acts. Question and

(05:20):
can you just remind the grand jury what information will
be on those records? Answer? It'll be telephone contact between redacted,
telephone contact between assistants and the Jane Does. Question. Okay,
so let's talk about redacted. Who is she redacted? Question
and how has she been interviewed? Answer? Yes? Question during

(05:43):
how old was she during the timeframe that redacted was
involved with mister Epstein? Answer? She was fourteen at the
time that she first met mister Epstein. Question, and she
was involved with him until she was seventeen. Answer, we
have in or about the beginning of two thousand and one,
which would make her forte up until two thousand and four.
Question and how did she come to meet mister Epstein? Answer?

(06:07):
Redacted brought her to mister Epstein's residence for the first time.
Mister Epstein was introduced or redacted by redacted. There was
a massage that took place with the two of them,
and then redacted engaged in sexual activity that I mentioned earlier,
where redacted informed us that she sat on the couch
and observed what she believed the two of them engaged

(06:29):
in sexual intercourse. Question and at the time redacted was
seventeen and redacted was fourteen? Answer yes, question all right,
And I'm not sure if that was actually the first
or second visit that she went, So it was either
the first visit or the second that the sexual activity
that I described took place. They may have gone there

(06:50):
the first time and just performed a massage for mister Epstein,
but on the second occasion, the sexual activity that I
described took place. Redacted stated that, you know, the three
years that we discussed from two thousand and one to
two thousand and four. She provided mister Epstein with over
in that three year period, over one hundred massages, and

(07:10):
all but three of the massages were sexual in nature.
Question how much was she paid for performing sexual massages
on Epstein? Answer? She was paid between two hundred and
four hundred dollars. Originally she was paid three hundred when
she started performing the massages for mister Epstein. On at
least two occasions, mister Epstein offered her one hundred more

(07:32):
if she would take off her underwear, which she did,
and on those two occasions she was paid four hundred.
When Redacted express to mister Epstein that she did not
want him touching her vagina, redacted and informed us that
he dropped the amount to two hundred. She also received
one hundred for bringing any other girls. Question all, right, now,

(07:53):
you said that on all but three occasions with redacted,
the massages were sexual. Did Jeffrey Stein masturbate during those massages? Answer? Yes,
he did. Question did he instruct Redacted to do anything
while he was masturbating? Question? Yes, he asked her to
rub and pinch his nipples. Question and the started when

(08:14):
she was still fourteen? Answer yes, Question what was the
involvement of Redacted with redacted. Answer, Redacted would schedule Redacted,
and sometimes Redacted would be out of town and be
in New York and schedule her to come and work.
But Redacted's primary role was to schedule or I guess
was the one that would schedule Redacted to come and

(08:36):
perform the massages. Question did Redacted ever actually lead Redacted
upstairs up to the bedroom? Answer? Yes, After Redacted took redacted,
Redacted started going by herself. The first time that Redacted
arrived at mister Epstein's by herself, Redacted took Redacted from
the kitchen and took her upstairs for the massage that

(08:57):
was to be performed for mister Epstein. Question. Now you
mentioned the sexual activity that Redacted observed between Redacted and
mister Epstein. Was there any other females involved in the
sexual activity? Answer? Yes, mister Epstein introduced an unidentified female
who performed oral sex Unredacted. I'm sorry, unredacted while mister

(09:20):
Epstein had sexual intercourse with the unidentified female. Now you
mentioned that at some point mister Epstein asked Redacted to
start bringing girls. Is that correct? Answer? Yes? Question and
did he describe what exactly he wants the type of
person that he wanted her to bring. Did she report that?
He asked if she had any younger friends that would

(09:41):
be interested in performing massages? Answer yes. He asked her,
can I just have a moment? Question of course, yes, answer,
I'm sorry, redacted. Mister Epstein asked her if she had
any friends that would be interested in performing these massages,
and then he also inquired if she had any younger
friends that would or that she could bring to him,

(10:03):
and then he offered to pay her one hundred dollars
for each person that she brought. Question in addition to
the sexual activity with mister Epstein, did redacted ever involved
redacted in any specific activity? Answer yes, Redacted contacted or
redacted by telephone and asked her to come to mister
Epstein's residence that mister Epstein wanted redacted to take pictures

(10:25):
of redacted. Redacted paid redacted five hundred to take naked
photographs of redacted at mister Epstein's residence in and around
the house and pool area at the request of mister Epstein.
Question and approximately how old was redacted believe she was
at the time. Answer? Redacted informed us that she was

(10:47):
sixteen years old when Redacted took the photographs of her naked.
Question what did redacted say about whether Jeffrey Epstein new
or true age? Answer? Redacted was informed by redacted to say,
I fact asked her age that she was. She would
respond that she was seventeen. When they want when they
went to mister Epstein's residence and were upstairs performing massages,

(11:10):
mister Epstein asked Redacted her age. She responded four and
then he said, so you're fourteen, and mister Epstein informer
acted that they would just keep that between them question, So,
in other words, he knew that she was fourteen when
she started seeing him answer yes, she did not remember
to say seventeen, and just naturally came out fourteen. And

(11:34):
there he finished that statement for her, so you're fourteen,
and stated that they will keep that between the two
of them. All right, folks, that's going to wrap up
part two in the next episode dealing with the topic,
we're going to finish this bad boy off. All of

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
