Speaker 1 (00:04):
All the stars are lined up here today, so joining
us in studio this is kind of like, it's kind
of fun because this is again our second show, and
so we bring in guests. We'll bring them on the phone,
we'll bring them here, we have them get with security
and all that.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
But joining us is the.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Editor of Spurs reporter Spurs reporter Dusty Garza.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Hey, good morning, sir, how are you good?
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Good? Thanks for having me in guys.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Man, you guys are like launching this big new thing
and I we are the second guest.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Possibly I don't know this is actually we.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Were the first guests. Wow, yes, on the Hall of
Fame wall. Eventually one day we'll have you as our
first guest where they do a barbershops and take pictures
of all the guests put them on the wall.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yes, yes, absolutely so thank you for having me guys.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Obviously, you guys know that I do Spurs pregame on
twelve hundred.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Wai.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
I'll be back.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
I was out for a couple of days due to work.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Which is fine. Sometimes I have some of y'all don't
know this, but I have a real job. I always
have to tell people this. I have a real job
and then that job, and then this job. I worked
three jobs. Isn't that like a skit or something?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah? That is.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
But Spurs currently they lost last night what was it,
one twelve to one eleven. No, I'm sorry, yeah, one
twelve to one eleven. The night before in Charlotte they
lost one seventeen to one sixteen.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
It was Christmas morning on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
February fifth, as we welcomed Daron Fox to the Spurs,
which was a great pickup. I think the Spurs does
see and correct me if I'm wrong here.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I think they won the trade deadline.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Uh yeah, and nobody's talked about it because of course
the Luca Land, you know, earthquake shaking trade that happened
got everybody stunned. But absolutely there's nobody who came out
better I think.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
And he scores a double double in his debut with
the win in Atlanta one twenty six, one twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Spurs think that, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Spurs fans are like, hey, look at this Steph Castle
with a performance the other night in Charlotte with thirty
three points for this guy, I want to get your
thoughts on Steph Castle too, Dusty.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, for sure, how is this guy?
Speaker 4 (02:05):
This guy is for real and he's just like you
see him on the court. He's focused, he's quiet, he's
just a beast. And it's funny because early in the
season I had done a lot of homework on him
prior to the draft, and I said, this is our guy.
This is there's nobody else who we would want. And
(02:27):
you know, there was people talking about Shepherd and Dillingham
and all kinds of I was like, no, no.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
No, this is our guy.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
And people were like, ah, he can't shoot, and I said, well,
watch his high school highlights. When he was playing against
some of these other players that are in the draft
as well, he controlled them. He owned them like it
wasn't even close. And so early in the season when
he got here, I could tell that he was kind
of holding back. He was a rookie. Maybe he didn't
want to, you know, step on any toes. And I
(02:56):
said to him a couple of times, dude, like, when
are we going to see unleash the beasts that I
know you are because I know you can drive, I
know you've got all kinds of moves we haven't seen yet.
He's like, well, you know, in typical stuff on fashion.
You know, I'm just here to contribute, to do whatever
I can, and so when he started kind of reaching
into his bag of tricks, I thought, okay, this is
(03:17):
going to get good. And early on, you know, he
was being planted on his butt quite a bit because
the guys are bigger in the NBA and they're throwing
bodies at him and everything else. So it was interesting
to see the evolution and we're going to continue to
see it. There's even coach Mitch Johnson was asked, I
think last night, what do you see from him? And
(03:39):
he says, well, you know, we see a lot of
progress and it's really good, but there's room for more improvement.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
That's the scary part to me.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, that's the scary when your coach can say, oh,
there's plenty of.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
More left in the tank. Oh yeah, And you're right.
Step Castle.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
When he first started out, hey, he was playing his
role and then he had to become a starter for
a little bit. Yeah, you know, and then he comes
in and then all of a sudden, and quietly, I felt, quietly,
he starts climbing the rookie ladder.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yes, right, And then we started hearing his name Okay,
now he's in the.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Dunk contest, right, then the trade deadline approaches, and then
we also hear he ain't going anywhere, right and dearon
Fox even has said I wanted him here.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I want to play with this guy.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yea.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
And so now you're starting to see, and we have
not seen this in a while, the Spurs are coming
back on a radar.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
They were gone for a couple of seasons.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Right, we got Victor that was great and by all
means he's still the number one guy here in San Antonio.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
But now you're starting to see the pieces.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
You've got Darren Fox, who's happy that he you know,
and I liked what he said.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I don't know if you caught it.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Daren Fox when he was interviewed by the reporters in Atlanta,
he was talking about how coach Mike Brown, we all
know who he is, right, would emphasize what San Antonio was,
and Darren's like, I gotta be here.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
I gotta be here for that. I mean, how key
is this?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Because currently, look, let's be real, we're still twelfth in
the Western Conference. Now, give us a little three game
winning streak and then we're probably ninth or eighth and
we're in the play in Where do you see this
team going playing well or playoff or play out?
Speaker 4 (05:17):
I took a lot of heat from this because I
came in with my eyes wide open. This was my
first season actually covering the team in person. I've been
covering them for decades out of Los Angeles, and when
I first got to media day, I walked out of
there and I said, you know what, guys, it's playoffs
or bus for these guys, Like they're serious about this.
(05:37):
They've been working really hard all summer and the players
definitely want playoffs, right, Management and coaching and everyone else
I think is like, Okay, we're not going to skip
any steps. We're going to grow slowly, et cetera. And
you wonder sometimes, you know, if everybody's on the same page.
But this trade for Daron Fox, you know, it was
(06:00):
something they pounced on. I don't know if it's something
that they would have done on their own going after him.
It's an opportunity, but it also kind of shows their
cards that, Okay, we think you guys are ready, you know,
let's let's run this. However, you're absolutely right. I even
this morning tweeted, look, look at the play in race,
and man, you've only got thirty two games I think
(06:21):
left of the season.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
You've got to get off.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
You're tough, and if you're going to really do this, guys,
if you really want this, then you're gonna have to
play a lot harder because guess what, You've got.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Portland breathing down your neck.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Now you've got Golden State, who just got Jimmy Butler.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
This is gonna get tight.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
It's yeah, Butler, hard Butler over there. The Butler drama.
That was just all of that.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
But you know, and so what we'll do is we'll
do one more segment with you. Sure you good for that? Absolutely?
I want to get into the remainder of the Rodeo
road trip. I want to know where this team's gonna be. Yeah,
come Fiesta time, right because the past few FIS's have
been some somber fiestas around here because usually it's the
(07:00):
Fiesta taxes and death. We need to put the Spurs
back on that podium. So coming up next, we will
break down the rest of the Rodeo road schedule and
the two games that are in Austin. It's okay, San Antonio,
It's fine. It's okay for Austin to have these games.
We'll calm you down on that on ticket seven sixty
