Speaker 3 (00:20):
Wonderable grant supper, good for Victor win min Yama. These
guys are fanatics and you GSA has opened up my
pretty sportingly.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
This is the Fanatics.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Welcome into it. Good Sunday morning. I am your host,
Dylan Emery. Welcome to the Fanatics. Along with ty Sujik
Shane Carter. We do have an in studio guest that
we will introduce here in a little bit. A lot
to get to today, Number one, to get to the
Spurs into the season. What's the bigger story the Spurs
end of the season or the retirement of the great
(00:53):
Bill Shooning Ti, I give you.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
The floor he Han end of an era. It's kind
of a sad day. Yeah, I'm struggling to find words
for that. It's an end of an era.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
I'm kind of stuck because I mean, obviously we're here
for this show.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
We're going to be here right afterwards.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Because we'll go down the hallway, literally down the hallway,
it's like a mile long, and then we've got to get.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
That show ready to go.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
It's odd because it's two thirty in the afternoon, which
is strange.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
We've never had a game that early on they.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
And we just got done with a West Coast swing,
which I think both me and you barely survived.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
I haven't fallen asleep before two am at all this week.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
So I know.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
It was like my mom called me today and said, Hey,
do you want to go to dinner with me and Dad?
And I was like, I have a Spurs game. They're
like no, it's a two thirty I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Like, yeah, you're right, so I'm gonna go to dinner
with them.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, okay, which, by the way, shout out to my
dad turned eighty years old yesterday. Eighty and I could
not read the lips that he what he said afterwards.
I can't do that here on the radio. I'll tell
you on the podcast version bit later. Shane, Are you
excited about the Spurs ending or what?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
What? What are your thoughts here?
Speaker 5 (02:06):
Am I excited about my favorite team season being over? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (02:09):
Not really, No, I it's it's more of a day
of appreciation for Bill. I know, I know this is
y'all's first year of working with the Spurs, and it's
it's been a good year. I'm I'm not taking away
anything away from that. When I first started working with Bill,
I was concerned. And you never know how these guys
are going to be, these guys who have names to
the to these uh to these UH franchises, these iconic voices,
(02:32):
and Bill has become that for a quarter century for
San Antonio Spurs basketball, and I was like, okay, Like
I was like, I didn't expect too much, but he
has been nothing less friendly and professional and and y'all
know in between the breaks that I was joking around
like he didn't take all that stuff too seriously.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
It just sounds so natural for him.
Speaker 6 (02:50):
And when he announces when he announced the retirement, I
was it felt like it was coming because it always
felt like he was he was kind of going through
the motions like just sometimes behind the scenes anyway, like
he's like, Okay, I'm ready for this.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
It was always the end game stuff that he cared
about more anyway.
Speaker 6 (03:06):
And I'm not excited to see him go, but I'm
happy that I'm going to be able to see it.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, I mean it's it's bittersweet, you know. I remember
being twenty three years old and coming back from college
because yes, I did go to college, and I was
in the walm that I was going to be a
sports broadcaster on TV.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Right.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
And so I'm at my brother's house and this is
in two thousand and three, and I'm listening to the call,
right because I was used to This is how old
I am.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Quick question for both of you? Who was before Bill?
I forgot Jay Howard.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
I feel bad because I've worked a jail.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah that's right, j Howard?
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Right.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
And then we had Bill, So I've golf ja. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
So he was the voice that he called the ninety
nine championship. Okay, okay. So Bill comes on in O
three and everybody's like, who's this guy?
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Right.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
It's kind of like the Popovich remember when Papovich was
a coach who was like who's this guy?
Speaker 6 (03:58):
Well?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Bill gets on there and I'm like, this guy knows
his stuff, you know, for twenty three seasons and I'm like,
humh twenty four seasons. Yeah, see, never missing a game,
never missing a game that you know, how much dedication
that is? Because how many games have I missed this year?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Three?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Yeah? And I think I've missed You've missed a feel
two or three?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, Shane, how many times did you fill in?
Speaker 5 (04:21):
I filled in ten times? That's about it.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Oh, who's count a season? This season? You filled in
ten times?
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Well, there's a couple of times that I was sick.
There's a couple of times that he had to go
out of state.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Oh yeah, that shift.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Yeah. I didn't feel like, are the Lightstu bride for
you in there on Bray.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
No, I felt like he was less than that. It's
a long season.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Wow, to never miss a game is just crazy because
on his side, like on our side, me and Ty
will tell you that we're here at the studio, so
we come to the studio and we go home. On
the road trips, we come to the studio, we go home.
For Bill, it's he lives in Austin. Well it's not
like the Spurs will take a special flight and come
(04:59):
land in Austin and then come back here, right, So
Bill's got to come all the way back here then
drive to Austin, you know, and to do that in
the dedication, he had it kind of turned me to
do radio because of Bill.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
I'm behind of a mic, you know, and that's the
weird part.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
And then to work with Bill very intimidating from the beginning, right,
you're intimidating. The guy knows his stuff, he's a he's
a Hall of Famer. He turned me into the news guy,
you know, and I it's a different well you know
that from the day day one of working with me,
You're like, oh man, I got eighty two games with
(05:34):
this guy. To now it's like I'm multitask him doing
this show. We're doing the other show right now, you know.
So it's going to be hard today. And I was
telling you it's one of those where it's like we
have a routine for our show. Yeah, well now all
of a sudden, we've got to change the routine. Yeah,
which I'm not used to.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
I mean everyone, when you're on a show, just like us,
you catch a rhythm, you figure it out. And Bill's
retirement is just there's no rhythm to that. There there's
no words for that. There is no perfect show we
can put on.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
No, we do have some surprises though, yeah, well we
do have some surprises, but there is no perfect show
that we could put on for Bill to really highlight
how tremendous his career is.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
And just like you said, Dylan, I'm on the opposite end,
you know, I'm not. I didn't grow up a Spurs fan.
I knew a lot about Tim Duncan. I knew a
lot about.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
Spurs because you won a lot.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
We got that. What was that in No? Seven? Yeah,
there was a team that we beat. What was the team?
And I can't remember the team?
Speaker 4 (06:37):
The current number one Lakers?
Speaker 2 (06:39):
They beat the Yeah, you know what it was the Cavs. Yeah,
we swept them.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Oh yeah, well I mean when was that?
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Oh seven?
Speaker 6 (06:47):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:48):
What what?
Speaker 5 (06:48):
What was that? That was the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (06:49):
No, that was the that was the final.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
That was the final, swept in the final.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Yeah, that's nice. Well, look at the future now.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Now you guys going home left today and one teams
the one seed.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
So but back to Bill keeps the positive for the Spurs.
Back to Bill.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
The one thing with Bill that I learned not knowing
who he was prior to this and having to jump
in and take on this role this year. In my
text once he announced his retirement, I said, I truly
appreciate the level of time, the level of he spends
so much time studying like he does, he does his homework.
(07:27):
You know, that's the amount of stats he pulls up
and comes in with and he can write off the
top of his head. Seeing his work ethic firsthand phenomenal.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
I told him. I was like, that's that made me
better this year? Down to a science.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Get me better for updates, Like when I'm doing score
up He's like, don't just do a score update, give
me something exciting behind it exactly, you know.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Like what what's the key stat?
Speaker 5 (07:48):
Like?
Speaker 2 (07:48):
He makes you better?
Speaker 1 (07:49):
And to watch that like handwritten notes he's got, you know,
and to hear him off air, it is one of
the greatest things that I'll always remember about him.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Yeah, I mean that that's all Those are tough used
the phil next season. Yeah, those that is, but yeah,
that's talk back and hearing Bill and his preparation. I
don't think there'll be another guy like that. He preparates
in a different way. And that's why he was able
to do this for twenty four years. Uh, and he
probably could go another twenty four more if he really
wanted to. He was to travel though, Yeah, no, no
(08:21):
album is to put it.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
By the way, the music you hear during that game
or during our show, that's his, that's Bills, that's Bill's
Nobody knows that. Sometimes people are like, why do you
play him? Like that's Bill's music. Yeah, we've written books. Yeah,
he's written books, and said, we made the executive decision.
What I want to say, In like week two of
the season, we had the same bumper music and Bill
just during the timeout he was like.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Hey, uh, different music to play.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
And I think that was his like healthy suggestion as
he was tired of hearing that song. And I was like,
you know, if you if you got music, send it.
And I was saying that sarcastic because I'm still getting
no Bill at that time. And lo and behold, the
next morning, I wake up to my in my in
box two songs from Bill, and those become the two
those become the music bumps and rotat between the between segments.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Now, I think that the one thing because okay, so
we'll play out our show a little bit. We're gonna
get into the Spurs talk obviously after this break. But
the one thing that got me in Shane this year
was in Memphis. Yes, Memphis was very so we do
the pregame. In pregame for me is exhausting because you
(09:27):
can ask ty you can ask Shane.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
It's a lot of talking from me.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
It's almost to where like Tye gets a feeling about
where I'm about to pass out, and that's when he
plays the music, so I know I can get to
a break.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
So we did the Memphis pregame. I took a little
bit of a break.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
But apparently somebody at the Memphis game decided to have
a heart attack on the first row, and so I
get back into the booths and Shane's like, hey, we got.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
To put you on.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
What And there's no games going on at this point,
Like it's an early it's like a six o'clock tip.
I'm like, all right, we're gonna get out of here early. Yeah,
it was like an hour and a half delay, but
it was me and Bill for an hour and a
half chit chatting. At one point we played what song
did we play?
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Shane?
Speaker 6 (10:09):
This this song audios and al vitos an.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
We played this song for like two minutes dead Air.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
It's not dead air, but it's like yeah, but.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Bill was more than happy to have this song on there.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
So there was no panic from Bill during this time. Right,
It's like, hey, all right, let's do this. Oh yeah,
this looks like this guy is like, yeah, they had
to get the stretcher out. They're cleaning up, you know.
He kind of pulled to Tracy Morgan apparently on the court.
You know, it was right before tip off, you know,
and so they're trying to clean all that stuff up.
But for the whole rest of the game, Bill would
refer back to it. Yeah, if you're wondering why it's
(10:44):
you know, eight o'clock at night, it's because well, but
after that, I was like extremely dead tire. That's breaking news.
I mean it's not really breaking news, but it's like,
what do you pull up with?
Speaker 5 (10:54):
Repeat? I feel like that in that break, I feel
like you repeated the same teams.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
I had to like at least twice, like only like
four games.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
It was it was kind of a dead night.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
But then Bill would you know, teach me to like, hey,
you can give me updates for anything else. And there
was some times where I would give him when like
the Spurs were playing in New York City and it
was eleven thirty on Christmas morning, I'm giving like what
collegiate updates from Yale? Yeah, you know, and Brown University exactly,
and he'd be like, oh, yeah, well, and he would
tell you exactly where that university was from.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
He would have stats. I mean, yeah, I remember, you
would give college stats.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
And he'd be like, this guy actually went back to
my high school and has this record and he just
like knew it off the top of his head and
like he had no clue that this stat was coming
or this game was going to be talked about, and
his memory is just so on that run.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah, except for that one time he called me Dylan Brooks.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
Yeah, well you kind of act like a lot of
Dylans in the world.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
But we did have fun with that because after he
did that, we started going over with all the Dylans
that are famous Bob Dylan, and I was like, hey,
fun fact, did you And that's what Bill does.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
And I think that for the Spurs fans.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I think today, I know you're probably gonna watch it
on TV, turn on the radio, you know, turn it on.
Listen to listen to Bill, because you're you're gonna miss
a legend.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
It's gonna be weird, it's gonna sound different, it's.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Gonna sound different, you know, and it's gonna be weird
for me next season. I don't know who I'm gonna
be tossing to. No, I'm not gonna do it because
I can do this. This, this, this is enough for me.
You can ask ty. This is I'm not gonna say
that I pre record stuff, but I pre record stuff.
Speaker 5 (12:29):
You're in your comfort zone there, I am.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
It's a thirty minute drive home, Shane.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Or you should have forty five minute drive home from me.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
Now it's like eight okay, and they lucky I did this.
I did this from from back to back for over
a year and a half. When when I got this job,
and then I was like, you know, I'm tired. I'm
trying of driving that far.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
I'm tired.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Here we go acting like brothers. Here we're all gonna
fight and say, oh yeah, well I live further.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
I'm telling mom.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
I don't tell mom.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
I handle my strel Yeah. Me and tire within walking
distance of each other, has no idea.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
Don't you live west? Don't you live west?
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Technically speaking, yeah, I'm not gonna get my address out.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
I'm saying, is I live south? That's that's like the
difference like from I live.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
South Antonio and that's all you need to know.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
I did live South oh.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
All right, well, coming up in studio. Guess she's been
patient enough. We're gonna we're gonna bring her on. We're
gonna get the spurs thoughts from her. We're gonna get
the masters because Trade Stone is a very golf person,
you know. And we're gonna talk like this during the
whole segment. That's all next on the Fanatics on ticket
seven sixty
