Speaker 1 (00:04):
I am your host, Dylan Emery along with ty Sujik
and Shane Carter as we get you through what we
would call sports church. But now we have some time
for a very special guest friend of the show. Ian
Cummings of Pro Football Network joins us Ian. Good morning
to you. How are you.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Good morning, doing, good about to We're decompressing after the
end of the twenty twenty five minutful Draft. It's always
a marathon of a three day stretch, but this year
was pretty exciting. You know, a lot of exciting hauls
out there, some pretty interesting storylines as well. So now
we can untack and eventually move on to twenty twenty six,
but not right away. We got some time here, so
it's fun.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Happy to be on with you guys.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Absolutely, and Ian, I got to ask you about Cleveland here.
Cleveland is the storyline for me as their quarterback room.
I've never seen this many quarterbacks or am I crazy?
Or am I just old that Cleveland goes out and
gets all these quarterbacks for this offseason?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
No, it's I struggled to think of a time where
we saw something similar to this, you know, I first off,
getting Dylan Gabriel in round three at quarterback that most
analysts you would speak to had him great than probably
in the day three ranch. He's more of a round
five to sixty seven guy for me, and they got
him in the top one hundred, right, and then they
come back and take Shader Sanders in round five. So
you know, there's plenty of theories out there as to
(01:23):
what went on there. My one that kind of sticks
with my brain is that they tried to get Dylan
Gabriel to fill the QB needs and cosmetic side, but
eventually maybe the owner stepped in and they took Shadur
Sanders in round five.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So we'll never know for certain what the truth is there.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
But it's a really complex situation now because you have
Dylan Gabriel, you got Kenny Picket, Joe Flacco, but then
you have Shader Sanders as well, who you don't know
if he's going to be even a short term starter,
let alone a long term starter. You don't know if
he's going to get that opportunity, and it invites a
lot of, you know, media attention.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, I don't want to say circus yet.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
I don't want to jump to that dramatic button. But
you know, sure Sanders does have a lot of you know,
contrasting elements to his evaluation and not the least you know,
what kind of presence is in the locker room? How
is he going to impact the franchise? Right, So it's
a lot to handle, it's a lot to take in
for Cleveland, And at the end of the day, I
don't know if you get any closer to having a
franchise QV So we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
But there are a lot of names to store through there.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, Ian, this is tied by the way. I'm glad
you brought up the parody between NFL, you know, the
Browns ownership in GM. When drafting your door, I have
two questions on the thought of your door. What was
your overall grade of Shador Sanders, you know, pre draft?
And then two what caused the slide? What was going
(02:38):
on in those interviews with Shador? That but that made
up the sixth round?
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, for sure, you know, I think I as a player,
I didn't quite have a first round grade on him.
He was my QB two. He was in my top
fifty for sure, So I would have taken him on
day two to be a potential perspective starter, but I
didn't think he had the franchise caliber tool to be
the guy right away like a cam Woard does. My
physical compent for Shulter standers was closer to Rock Perdy.
(03:06):
You know, when Rock Perty went seventh round the class
that he was in, no one anticipated that he would
be an NFL starter, right, because he didn't quite of
an elite tool if he had a decent arm, he
had pretty good quick twitch and mobility, but wasn't an
the lead creative threat. I see those limitations with Shultar, right.
You know, he has a baseline level of talent, but
he at the collegiate level he won with his accuracy.
(03:27):
He won with his ability to be a volume passer,
get the ball out on time, things like that. But
you know, not a transcendent talent, right, And then you
look at why the slide happened for me. I think,
you know, it's a really difficult conversation to have because
you don't want to make big leaps about a player's
character when we're not as tuned in as we can be. Right,
I don't know Shuder personally. Very few analysts do. So
(03:47):
it's something like a ruling there, but there is enough
information out there to read the tea leaves. You know,
you go back to the spring game, this past the
previous offseason, right when Colorado had players transferring out left
and right, and Shoulder goes on social media and trash
talk guy like, oh he was mid anyway, right, That's
something that potentially provides.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
A window in a little bit more into whose this
guy is right.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
And then some of the some of the you know,
displays after games where he's you know, being a little confident,
you know, a little overconfident, right, those are things that
you have to figure out how to balance the line
is the confidence or is it arrogance? And again that's
something that NFL teams had a chance to figure out
with their interviews with him, and the fact that he
slid so far leads me to believe that maybe there
(04:28):
was the reflection in NFL team and front off his
rooms where they were saying, hey, you know, it might
be a little more of the latter, and do we
want to take that guy on day three when he's
not even going to be a starter, he'll be a
backup and then just invites a lot.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Of unnecessary attention.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
So again, it's a really complex evaluation. I do think
there is enough smoke there to say that there was
maybe some mental makeup concerns with teams and that's why
he felt because at the end of the day, he's
not a good enough physical talent to kind of, you know,
kind of reconcile that.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
I guess, Hey, Anne and Shane, So I want to
reach years a little bit to the Cowboys. This is Texas,
and obviously the Cowboys are their darlings in a way,
even though my two co hosts don't really like them.
But if I look at their first three picks, yeah,
Tyler Booker in the first, Donovan Azeraku the edge from
Boston College in the second, and then Shavon Revel the
cornerback from East Carolina in the third. And in terms
(05:17):
of where the Cowboys fans were, they really wanted wide receiver,
they really want to running back in the first three rounds.
And I was explaining to people that they're drafted not
just based on me, but they're drafting based on also
on value and all fore of those guys, A lot
of people had people as consensus top fifty top fifty
t talents. Can you maybe break down those three picks
and why the fans should or shouldn't be encouraged by
(05:39):
the way they drafted.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
I think the first three rounds were probably my favorite
stretch for the Cowboys. They lost me a little bit
on day three, which we can get into later, but
the first three rounds I thought were phenomenal. I think
getting Tyler Booker, I know, at number twelve overall for
an average athlete, right, that's going to rub some people
the wrong way, and I understand that, but the film
is just incredible. You know, it's just really solid technical film.
(06:03):
You know, he's so technically sound at six five three
twenty with over thirty four charms. You know, he's big,
he's powerful, but he also plays with pretty leverage acquisition
and footwork and really timely precise hands. He has a
lot of pop at the contact points too, and he's
got great vision on stunts right, great assignments sound run
blocker as well.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
So I think the floor with.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Tyler Booker is extremely high to the point where you
can justify this type of pick, and now getting him
on that line with Tyler Guyton, Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe
and then Terrence Steel on the right side, that you know,
on paper, that's a very very good offensive line, right.
I know, schematically, maybe Tyler Booker limits you a little
bit with wide and outside zone because he doesn't quite
have the range to get out there, and he doesn't
(06:43):
have he's.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Not super rangy as a pollar either. But with Dak Prescott,
you know you.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Can be a you know you have a volume passer.
You can pass the ball a lot when you need to.
And Tyler Booker rocks olid in that face. So love
that pick. Donovan Azeraku. I think the value was really
good there. I didn't have him as the first rounder
just because his speed to power isn't.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Really there the way you'd want it to be.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
He's a little bit smaller, a little bit lighter, but
he doesn't and he's not he doesn't have elite explosiveness
either at that size, so you wonder if that's gonna
limit him a little bit. But he's ben deep, he's flexible,
great Finnat's an agility rusher with one of the deepest
pass rushing bags in this class.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Right so I look at him fitting, you.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Know, alongside Michael Parson, Dante Fowler, with Osa Diggi Zua
and Maddie Smith inside like, this is a guy who
you could put out there on obvious passing downs and
he can be able to work because he knows how
to win one on one, and I think that's a
good role to have. So you know, obviously some of
the picks that mate later on bolstering the interior defensive line,
someone's got to show up at the note.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Tackle spot when they're in those odd and hybrid fronts.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
But I do think Dona as a rock who makes
a lot of sense as a pass rusher. And then
Simon Revel is probably my favorite value pick up their
entire class, just real quick. He was a top twenty
five guy for me. If he's healthy, six foot two
over thirty two inch arms, explosive, really rangy playmaker on
the back end with pretty good vision in his own
but also good discipline and press man, and.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
He's got the link to dictate releases.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Two faith playmaker with ball skills and really good run
supportability as well, so all the you know, the biggest
wildcard with him is Kenny get healthy and stay healthy.
He's on tract to a full recovery with his torn ACL,
so once he gets two hundred percent, I think he
has the raw talent to be a very very good corner,
and then you look at him with Trayvon Diggs and
Deron Bland, like that has the potential to be a
(08:21):
top five sebe trio in the league.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network joining us Ian. You know,
I know Shane said that we don't like the Cowboys.
That's not really true. But yeah, overall, I have to
ask you this, because everybody has their overall winner of
the draft. I who's your overall winner of this year's
draft of the NFL.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
It's a really difficult question. I'm kind of parsing.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Through the memory banks here because there were a lot
of teams that drafted very well. The one at the
top of my mind is the Patriots. I think they
got incredible value all the way through. Will Campbell was
a great player. I think what they got on day
two as well Ki Williams, they got Brayden Swinston on
day three. They just kept getting value as far down
the board as they went.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I think they did a.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Great job stacking picks and you know, improving the talent
cast for Drake May but also you know, getting really
under the radar players I think would be really solid pros.
Later on, Craig Woodson. That safety is just one example,
but you know that's one of many. Jered Wilson at
center getting them at the tail end of day two,
you know, I think that was a great pick for them.
The Patriots more than most needed a really good draft
to kind of take the leap right because they added
(09:28):
a ton of talent and free agency. They're kind of
one of those teams that you're looking at and saying,
if Drake May takes the leap as a passer in
year two, this is a team who could go from
top four pick the true playoff contention.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
So I think they they they compounded that momentum with
this class. But the Buccaneers had a great class too.
The Chiefs and the Eagles, they're the usual call prits.
I thought they played the board with incredible value. The
Eagles getting Ty Robinson on Day three, getting Jahad Campbell
Andrew mccouba.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
You know, the values that.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
They were able to get with their first few picks
were really impressive. And then the Chiefs getting Jalen Royals
and round four was incredible.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
He was the top five receiver for me.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
I got some Pierre Garson vives watching him. He's got
that compact frame, but a really good operator as a
route runner, a rack threat as well, So I think Jalen.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Royals can eat in that offense.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
And then another winner, and this one is kind of
related to the Cowboys. Actually, the Seattle Seahawks I thought
had a really really nice class if they were aggressive
when they needed to be, but they also let the
board come to them and they got Tory Gordon, a
top seventy five player in the round five. For me,
if I were the Cowboys, I would have taken Tory
Gordon over Schamar James in round five.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I think you get. I think you get an instant
movement Z.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Receiver who would be a great number two to Seedee
Lamb with Tory Gordon.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
He's productive at Colorado State.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
He's got the size speed combination, but a nuance route
runner two. So you know, the Seahawks are able to
get incredible value there. And at the end of the day,
we don't know how these picks are going to pan out,
but on paper, you know, off of the evaluations we had,
those teams really stot up with their performance.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Alrighty Ian Well, I appreciate you stopping by. We're definitely
gonna have to give you a good old follow to
at ic under score draft on Twitter because that's that's
some insight. And to do this basically on your day
for this is your day off. So we appreciate you
stopping by the Fanatics and we will talk soon.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
My friend all right, yes, thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
All right, guys, that's Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network. Man,
he's right. You know, I would sit there and I
would also tell you guys that New England did well
in this draft. I didn't even want to bring up
the Saints because nowhere in that interview did you hear
the Saints because they did terrible. So coming up after
the break, we'll kind of still talk the draft. I
(11:34):
want to kind of break it just a little bit
because I want to get into this NBA and how
I'm kind of liking that. I think we'll save that
for the second hour. But overall, we're going to grade
our teams and coming up, we're going to figure out
who my second team will now be. Because this is
for real, folks. I will buy the jersey today. That's
all next on the Fanatics on Ticket seven sixty
