Speaker 1 (00:04):
Last segment up the show. You can catch this on
the iHeartRadio app. You can also catch us on a
podcast version of this if you want to go back
and see how much I hate the Big twelve, how
much I hate the everything, and I'm always bitter, and
I always argue you no, you can catch it. We'll
have that up and running for you. You can also
catch us on social media throughout the week. I want

(00:25):
you guys to start participating in our quick thoughts. What
that means is that if we post them out there,
I want you to respond back with your quick thought.
Just post it back out there on Twitter. Keep it
less than a minute. And some of those that we
see and here and like, we'll pull them. We'll put
them on the radio.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Please don't cuss. I mean it's on Twitter. They can
do whatever.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
I know, but like a different to put that little
limital beeps down in there in case someone cusses.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well, then that disqualifies them from coming on the radio.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
I will not edit it.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
So yeah, just that it's raw, it's quick thought.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
You can catch it on the social media all the places,
all right, appre sure what you got for us. I
am a Spurs fan first and foremost, if we didn't
know this, I used to cut out the newspaper articles.
Terry Cummings days, Dave Robinson, days, Willie Anderson. Ellis you

(01:19):
guys hear all these names.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I grew up a Spurs fan. Twenty nine seasons ago,
I was very upset with the Spurs, and that's because
they hired a guy named Greg Popovich. I liked Bob Hill.
I was a fan of Bob Hill. I felt like
he was doing the right things. But Greg Popovich, who
was young at the time, you know, he came in

(01:42):
in his fifties and said, I know, I'm gonna, you know,
coach this team. This guy had no credibility in the NBA,
which was totally weird.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Thanks Larry Brown, who used to actually coach here too.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
But Greg Popovich took the helm twenty nine years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Twenty nine years ago. It was a little rough at starts.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
You know, obviously we had David Robinson with a big
time injury. But lo and behold, we entered the draft
and who do we get Timmy Duncan. Things changed? Did
you know Tim Duncan always made the playoffs? Isn't that crazy?
Isn't that just crazy, never missed, insane. You know, it's
stuff that you never see anymore. Tom Brady esque, Yeah,
he is.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I would.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
I would put Tim you know, quietly up there, you know.
But Greg Popovich was a guy that turned this team around.
Greg Popovich was a that that it was death taxes
Spurs in the playoffs, you know, and they weren't supposed
to be there. The team was boring, right, Greg Popovich
was boring. They were quiet. They didn't have any controversy,

(02:44):
nothing in the headlines, right, No teammates, no, no, uh,
you know, pulling guns on the plane, you know.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Did you see that? By the way, on.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Netflix, they got the new documentary on that I was watching.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
It's pretty interesting, pretty interesting. That's my go to guy
for Netflix.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, But the Spurs started to slowly fade away when
our big three Tony Parker, Monogenobi, Tim Duncan all decided
to ride off into the sunset. Obviously we knew it
was going to happen. But for twenty plus seasons, Spurs fans,
you had it made. We were either going to be
the one seed or the two seed, if our lowest

(03:19):
seed would be the three seed. There was a few
ups and downs, in there, you know, the up seasons,
you know. And I blame the birth of my daughter
Riley on when we lost to Memphis as the one
seed and they were the eighth seed. In fact, she
was born the day that we got eliminated. I was
supposed to be happy and sad at the same time,
you know. And I always remind her that on her birthday,

(03:42):
her birthday cards, right, you know, And it was significant.
The Spurs era was significant. Now Spurs fans, where I
want to turn this to the choir and to the
pulpit is it will never be this way again. I
want you to put that in your head. A lot
of you texted me, messaged me. Uh, when Mitch Johnson

(04:05):
was announced as the head coach, as he should be.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Uh, he took over the team.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
You know, when Popovich, which was very hard for me
to watch fellas very hard for me to watch Pop
el Hefe especially way, which by the way, I want that.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Shirt el Hefe and to.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
See that it was the first time that Spurs fans
got to see Pop.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
You knew it. It was time.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Shout out to Monogenobili and Tim Duncan who go to
Pop's physical therapy. All of the appointments they go with him.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
But we're not. We're not going to have that anymore.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
We can we can box this up and we can
put it off to the side and the Spurs now
you're moving forward. And it's funny to me because there's
a lot of pressure on Mitch Johnson.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, you know, and anybody.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
That would follow them the footsteps of Greg Popavitch. There's
a lot of pressure, right, but Mitch Johnson is a
player's coach, and what is six in the NBA right now?
Player coaches? No, So this time, Spurs fans, what I
need you to do is kick back, relax and actually
see what this guy can do with a healthy roster.

(05:14):
You know, there's people that would tell me, not my coach, really,
Wimby not there, Daron.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Fox, not there.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
You're dealing with the likes of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes,
who out of all the players, they were your most
consistent and you still got thirty plus wins this season.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Now. Is there pressure for the Spurs? Oh?

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, there is that. We're excited. Tomorrow's the lottery. We
don't know where we're gonna end up. If history tells
us we're gonna have the number one pick, if that's
what we hold to, if history tells us and repeats itself,
We're gonna have the number one pick. We're gonna have
Cooper Flagg, We're gonna go to the NBA. We're gonna
win eighteen titles again. But that's where I want to
stop him too. That's not gonna happen. We don't have

(05:59):
players like Tim Duncan Janobili and Tony Parker who all
sit there and are consistent at playing for the same person.
Greg Popovich is an icon. A lot of you don't
like him because of his political side, A lot of
you don't like him because of he's too boring, you know,

(06:20):
and the whole political side put that to the side.
You know, it's I guess we can't have speech. I
guess we can't do any of that. But to me,
he's el hefe I don't It was hard. It was
hard to see him the way he was. But when
we saw him in the press conference and we saw

(06:43):
Spurs fans, you were able to let go of that past.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
You've got it.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
You can't compare Mitch Johnson to Greg Popovich. You can't
compare anybody to Greg Popovich, you know, and so from
the twelve year old me, Greg, I apologize for booing
you back when you took over, because I had no
idea what we were about to see. I had no idea,
and I had a front row seat a couple of years.

(07:07):
I got to watch championships. I got to go to
Cleveland when they swept them. You know, I was privileged
to see that. Spurs fans, we will get back there.
I think that you guys are very upset with Mitt Johnson,
and I don't know why. I mean, Shane, are you
looking forward to him? I'm scheing the Spurs.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
I was impressed with him. A guy who has to
come in following the legend. We talked about this before,
everyone talks about it. Don't beat the guy who follows
the legend. Be the guy who follows the guy. Yeah,
and for Mitch Johnson, sorry, real quick does Mitch Johnson,
to his credit, he was given a roster that's very young,
van experience, but has a lot of potential to it,
and he was able to do the best he can.
He Yeah, there was issues with the liaps and like,

(07:46):
and people didn't like how we switch them stuff around. Yeah,
but given what he was given and the circumstances that
were surrounding it.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
I was impressed and the players responded to it. And
you know, we salute Greg Popovich. There should be a statue,
there should be something, we do something for him. I
don't know if we'll ever see him again, you know,
but I enjoyed the twenty nine years.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, and I salute the twenty nine years. I know.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I've been on my shows before and I'm like, eh,
it's time for him to go. It doesn't really hit
you until you see that he left. Yeah, No, I
mean you're like, whoa, what happened?

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Truth be told you.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
You'll never understand. And the way Pop is, you probably
won't the statue until ultimately he's no longer with us, because.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
That's just who he is and how he is. And
I don't want to put that out there.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
It's like Prime, It's like what Coach Prime said, ceboy
Peop while they're here exactly.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
But he's not he's not a guy that enjoys that.
We don't want them to put Dwayne Wade's statue out there.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Yeah, so so that artist wasni statues.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
Yeah, that's the part Pop doesn't doesn't like stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
He doesn't, so if he has any.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
Say or controlling it, that that won't happen, which is
not I don't think. Don't come down an organization for that.
I think that's really pop just like nah, you know,
I I'm just coaching basketball.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Did they put a banner up though? For pop next? Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Absolutely they should change one of the major streets in
the city to his name. That's hard, like like one
of the ones that surrounded the Almodome.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
Like Popovich Avenue. Yeah, yeah, Pop Way. I like that
Pop Way, Pop Way.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
I like that way.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Yeah, turn left on pop Way.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah there, we don't want to go with Poppy he
might l But here's the thing.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Here's the thing with Mitch Johnson. He has he's falling,
he's filling big shoes. Number one two. Last season was
I would say, almost even more difficult to coach, probably
because he could not establish his identity. So there might
be a difference in philosophy you see this season out
of Spurs because he probably had to match what the

(09:46):
no Greg Popvich game plan was, even though he's from
the tree. He might not do it exactly the same,
but with that interim title, he probably was under the pressure.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
To do it Pop's way, so don't be surprised. But
it looks a little different. Yeah, it will be different.
So that's it. That's the show.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Salute to Greg Popovich twenty nine years where the san
Juania Spurs comes to an end. Happy Mother's Day to
everyone out there.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Enjoy your day.
