Speaker 1 (00:04):
Many ways.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
You can reach us on the Ticket seven sixty am
radio dial. You can also download us on the iHeartRadio app.
It is free and I love free. So before the break,
we had some NFL news and notes, but I saved
the Cowboys because we've got a good friend Joseph Hoyt
of the Dallas Morning News joining us. And Joseph, I
got to ask you, welcome to the show.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
First of all.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Second, how is the Dallas Cowboys training camp going so far?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah? Hey, thanks for having me, and it's been going good.
You know, it's funny because you know, we're here on
the West coast and that means, you know, when I
wake up at eight am, it's you know, ten am,
you know, in Central time, And so I woke up
to the Jake Ferguson News had to confirm that really quick.
So that was that was some big news for the Cowboys,
is they lock up one of their young stars and
someone they really believe in, and they have high hopes

(00:51):
for someone they believe kind of last season was a
fluke if you consider the knee injury, you know, the
concussion and then obviously back of QB play. So anyways,
kind of a little bit of a ramble start there,
but yeah, that's the kind of breaking news that woke
me up this morning. And now happy to talk with
you guys.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Hey, Joseph Shane Shane part of the fanatics, staking on
the Jake ferguson this for a second, like, how long
do you think this contract negotiations have been in the
worst because we haven'tly heard anything about it up until today.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yeah, I think it's been It's probably accelerated recently. You know,
I had heard that I had heard recently that a
deal was coming with someone, but not that someone is
kind of the wording that I had heard, you know, saying,
you know, and so obviously not the Micah Parsons deal.
But I think this kind of came together, you know,
pretty quickly recently. You know, Jake signed it, you know,
when the light was still dark this morning, you know.

(01:41):
So I think it's something that they've been kind of,
you know, working on for a little bit. Uh. Steven
Jones told us the other day that they had been
talking with about four or five players they identified as
people to potentially signed to extensions. You know, obviously Micah
Parsons someone they're trying to get done, but Jake Ferguson
fell on that group too.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
You know, Joseph White, I got to ask you this
question because you're bringing up the star topic. Like this
week alone, we've been talking nothing about Michael Parsons and
it seems like everybody is and I know that you
just said they're you know, hey, they're trying to get
this deal done. I mean, how's the fan atmosphere as
far as you know out there in Oxnard?

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Are they Are they doing.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Okay with this because they a lot of them are
concerned a little bit?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Right? Yeah, No, I think you know, last year's kind
of word that was kind of associated with training camp
was apathy frustration, you know, with kind of lower attendance.
Yesterday we had a really good attendance, you know over
at the River Ridge Playing Fields and Oxnard. But I
think it kind of the word of frustration kind of
reared his head again because you know, Jerry Jones got

(02:41):
on the mic and it was the timing was pretty
pretty funny by Cowboys fans because he's doing his opening
speech and he says, hey, now let's get down to business,
and immediately the crowd just starts yelling pay Mica, pay,
Micah you gotta pay Micah. That's the business you got
to take care of. And you know, that was a
pretty loud roar from the fans and kind of a
testament to where they're at. I think that, you know,
in terms of this contract negotiation, I think Micah has

(03:04):
done a really good job of kind of actually playing
the media game with the Joneses in terms of kind
of saying the things that Mike had fans on his side,
and I think it's working. So I think that we
had we saw a lot of frustration from Cowboys fans
about the fact that Micah Parsons is still in tennis
shoes and not Cleat's. You know, four days in the camp.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Joseph what Dallas morn and News joined us here on
the fanatics on ticket seven to sixty.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Joseph switching gears real quick.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
We saw the news earlier this week that Tarreor Steele
was going to be it was going to be sidelined
for a little bit. So the right tackle position, which
has been kind of a question a little bit leading
up to training camp for US. We had talked about
Nate Thomas, we had talked about achem Idenergy, we had
talked about Johnny cornelis this draft pick from Oregon, like,
from what you've seen so far, who has anyone stood
out or has anyone given the majority of the reps
so far at that position?

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, good question, because I think that was something that
I was curious to once we saw Steel go out,
because they've had a lot of compliments for Nate Thomas,
as he pointed out, right, but that's a guy that's
been working at left tackle. Was kind of curious, Hey,
are they going to move Nay Thomas over there kind
of in a pinch? No, the answer so far has
been a chema denergy, you know, and again there's no
pads on. We get those. We get pads on today.
So we're gonna learn a lot about this this offensive

(04:11):
line group with this interior defensive line. But a chem
of energy has look good so far. You know, this
is a guy that you know, he's a DFW native,
kind of bounced around a little bit. You know, they've
kind of looked at him as someone who's got some
talents still, and you know, I think that they're trying
to kind of polish him, you know, here with the
Cowboys under the tutelage of Connor Riley, So that's gonna
be something that I'm really keeping an eye on today

(04:32):
is how does he kind of fare against some of
these pass rushers, especially because if you kind of look
at it right now in the Cowboys, you know, even
without my comparisons, that the edge rushers have been probably
the best group that they've had so far. So I'm
curious to see how he holds up against them, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
And one of the things Joseph said I'm going to
keep my eye out on for the Dallas Cowboys this
season is obviously newly head coach Ryan Schottenheiber. I think
what's been the overall reaction of him so far because
what I've been reading, what I've been hearing him say,
he's like a go getter, He's determined, he's trying to
get this team to build together. What's the overall feeling
of Brian Schottenheimer coming in as the Dallas Cowboys coach

(05:11):
this season?

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah. I think if you kind of talk to players,
it's funny because there's always a difference between, you know,
internal belief and external belief, right, and I think externally,
a lot of people see some of the things they're
doing in terms of their high energy, you know, work
drills before practice where they have like a assistant coaches
swimming on a stretcher like a surfboard, and they have
masks and they you know, Dak Prescott riding around like

(05:34):
a cowboy using a broomstick. Right, Like, I think a
lot of people on the outside say like, hey, that's
really Corny's that that can't resonate with these players? And
I asked Jalen Toliver that specifically, like, hey, it might
seem corny, but what does it work for you guys.
He's like, yeah, like we are having a lot of fun.
He's like, you know, Brian Schottenheimer, I think the key
word that everyone has told me is authenticity. They think

(05:57):
that this guy is authentically about having funicly about trying
to win Super Bowls. You know one thing that you know,
he might do the corny stuff, right, But you know
the other thing he does is you know, he told
the players before they went to Oxtar and he's like, Hey,
if you guys don't believe that we can win a
Super Bowl, I don't want you coming to Oxtar. So
it's hell me now, you know. And so I think
that these players have really bought into it. I think

(06:18):
ultimately Ken You wins that's the big question. But right
now I think he's kind of done everything right in
terms of, you know, the buzzwordth of culture and trying
to build this team.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Hey, you brought up a Jalen Tolbert a second ago,
and I want to switch gears to the receiver position.
And I think pretty much everyone in cowboysition can agree
that the top five is pretty much said Seedee Lamb,
George Pickens to Cavante Turpin, Jalen Tolbert, and Jonathan Mingo.
So coming down to that likely six bock because the
Cowboys traditionally do keep six receivers, It's going to come
down to Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy and other guys like So,

(06:50):
has anyone really stood out yet for that position? In
my early rankings, I had Ryan Fournoyd because I thought
he was a better route runner than Jalen Brooks.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
But Jalen Brooks might have the edge be a special teams.
What have you seen?

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Yeah, I think it's a good question because, to be
honest with you, I don't think either any of them
are really stuck out as that potential six option. I
think if I had to choose someone right now, I'd
say Jalen Brooks, partly because of the special teams and
partly just because the relationship he has with Deck. I
think those two are really close. But that's been kind
of a It's funny like I was talking with someone
yesterday and wondering, like, hey, you know, they have some

(07:21):
interesting position breakdowns, you know, I think of of of depth,
and anytime you have a guy like C. J. Goodwin
on the roster who plays only special teams, you know,
you might have to kind of move some things around
to accommodate that.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
You know.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
I started to wonder like, if no one's if no
one really sticks out, do they have a six receiver,
you know, or do they just carry five? You know,
I think that they're gonna run a lot of George
Pickens and a lot of Ceedee lamb, you know. So
that's one thing that I'm starting to wonder. If no
one separates, do they keep six? But I think right now,
you know, they're still waiting for someone to really, you know,
take that next step. But if I have to go

(07:54):
with it, I'd say Jalen Brooks.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
So what you gets to the defense for a second.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
A lot of the focus has been on the defensive
obviously Michael Parson's contract extension, Donavandeza Rock who's been standing
out a lot early in training camp. But talking about
the defense tackles for a second, A lot of the
pressure looks like is on Mazzie Smith and so guys
like Salmon Thomas come in, but he's gonna be more
of a pass rush option behind Osa Digizua. And then
they drafted Jay Toya out of UCLA, who is a
traditional run stuff and nose tackle. And then they go

(08:19):
off and get a guy like Paron Winfrey, who has
so far it sounds like, had a good camp early
in early early in Oxnard. Have you seen whosually stood
out from the tackle position.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah, I think it's that's gonna be a huge position
to watch today moving forward, especially with the Pats coming on.
You know, I think everyone wants to talk about Mazzi
and we're still you know, I think Mazzi is still
trying to probably stack days is probably the best way
to say it. I think this is a guy, you know,
that they still want to see be a little bit
more consistent. They still you know, and it's hard for

(08:49):
him because he's on his third defensive coordinator in three years,
he's on his third defensive line coach in three years.
He's on another way to change. So nothing has been
consistent for Mazzi's so it's kind of hard to build
that consistency. You know. One thing that's been interesting, it's
been they you've seen Solomon Thomas line up at nose
tackle or kind of a shade off the nose tackle
a couple of times, you know, someone who they believe

(09:12):
can be a solid run defender for them. I wonder
if there are going to be potential defensive line sets
where you know, you have Peyton Turner, Solomon Thomas, Sam
Williams and Nosa Dickey zoo out there and then then
another edge rusher off the edge, right Like, I think
that that's the potential they might go a little bit smaller,
you know, And I think that in Matt Eberflusis system
that could be that could work. But that's kind of

(09:33):
one thing I'm keeping an eye on as we get
the pads on today.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
The Cowboys traditionally will keep the highest paid undrafted free agent.
This year they had two guys, both from Syracuse make
the most with Elijah Clark, who's a safety, and Justin
barhnero's a linebacker. Any have any of these two really
stood out so far in camp that you think are
pretty confident about making the final roster.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
You know, honestly, not really yet, but it's kind of
hard to tell so far. You know, I think that
those two, you know, I think Elijah Clark was really
interesting in many camp and osiers because he got some
run with the ones at certain points because Malie Hooker
and Donovan Wilson weren't out there, but they're back and
so he kind of has been with the twos. You know,
Zion Shoulders, another undrafted free agent, he had made a

(10:12):
nice one handed interception. He's a guy that's you know,
been kind of popping a little bit, I would say
in terms of the some of the guys with the twos,
you know, Baron's got a lot of athleticism, but it's
gonna be hard for both those guys. They're gonna have
to really kind of unhearse someone. And right now, you know,
I don't know if the opportunities were the chances have
really been there to kind of make that difference. So

(10:32):
you know, we'll see how the rest of the undrafted
free agents kind of go. But I think if anyone
has made an impression so far of that group, it's
been Zion Childress.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
And Joseph Hoyd of the Dallas Morning News joining us
and Joseph, I've got to say this because down here
in San Antonio, we all like to talk about Jerry,
you know, and again you had referenced earlier that the
crowd was kind of getting on to him. Do you
think Jerry Jones is you know, ready for this team?
Because I feel like he is extra or pumped obviously
because obviously you want to forget the season that.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Was last year.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I believe that he will get these deals done. I
think at the end of the day, Jerry's a businessman.
What exactly do you feel like from Jerry so far
in this training camp because he's kind of been outspoken
like a lot. He's speaking out a lot in these
training camps. I know that he usually does day one,
but he's you know, speaking to the fans. He's kind
of excited for this season, isn't he?

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (11:25):
I think he is, you know. I think one thing
that he kind of harped on yesterday was how shocked
he was and how bad last season went. And obviously,
anytime you lose your starting quarterback for an extent a
period of time, you're putting yourself in that position. But
I honestly, I kind of, you know, it's funny because
I kind of used the word frustration last year with
fans to him and how he understands that. I'm almost
kind of seeing a little bit of frustration too from

(11:47):
Jerry in terms of, you know, this Mica situation. You know,
usually usually or last year at least, he you know,
he talked to the media after opening day ceremony too.
You know, he was shaking hand, answered fans doing autographs today. Yesterday,
you know, he did his speech, and then he walked
off the field, you know, when the media was kind

(12:07):
of following him, making it pretty clearly like, hey, Jerry,
we love to talk with you about the Mica thing.
And I you know, we even try to talk with
Steven Jones a little bit about the Mike situation and
Minie campin opas, and he quickly said, hey, I'm not
answering questions about that, all answered questions about other things.
So I think that I think that they've kind of
maybe met their match a little bit in terms of
the media game. You know, Micah Parsons and Treylon Digs
holding an impromptu press conference that you know, the Cowboys

(12:30):
did not expect the other day. I think that there's
a little bit of frustration potentially, But I do believe
that Jerry's excited about the moves they made this offseason.
I think he thinks George Pickens is a guy that
could potentially get this team, you know, into a position
to really make some plays and make a difference on offense. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
I really have to say that a quiet Jerry could
be exciting towards the end of the season for the
Dallas Cowboy fans. Our friend Joseph Hooid of the Dallas
Morning Nudes joining us this morning. Joseph, if you could, though,
because I know we'll have you on throughout the season,
but can you bring that weather back from Oxnard for us?
Because you know this as well as I know this.
In July and August, it starts to heat up around
here in Texas.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Oh yeah, I'd be happy to this. This is lovely.
I mean I'm out right now around eight thirty in
the morning, and it's sixty five degrees got a little
cloud cover, and you know, I feel bad and making
I'm probably making you guys tell us right now, but
I'm been trying to enjoy it too and appreciate it,
you know. So I feel it's nice weather out here.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
All right.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Well, enjoy the rest of training camp and we will
talk to my friend. Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Sounds good.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Thanks all right.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
So Joseph Hoyd giving you the details of the Dallas
Cowboys training camp so far as we would say that,
it's some Jerry being Jerry being Jerry, but he's being quiet,
you know. So that's a good thing for you guys,
Cowboy fans. So coming up next, you know, I want
to jump into a little bit of Spurs doings from

(13:52):
this past week. That's all next on the Fanatics on
tickets seven sixty
