Speaker 1 (00:03):
We're gonna get a little NFL going in these first hours.
We're gonna go ahead and talk about some rumors, some news,
what's going on in the sports world, and of course
I want to go down I ten and head over
into Houston as Shane. We're seeing news that the Texans
running back Joe Mixon is going to miss a majority
(00:23):
of the preseason for his ankle.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, I mean, but also, how much was he really
going to play in the preseason because he's what almost
thirty at this point, and he's already he's off a
year where they signed a contract extension, he's gonna be
a starting running back.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
How much was he going to play in the first place?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Probably none, Yeah, But I mean, really, the injury signifiers
what kind of like text, It takes it over a
little bit to where it's like not just like, oh,
this is gonna set up he's a starter. Now, it's like,
is there an injury concern? And as you and I
both know, when you're older, when you're twenty nine, it's
never to being twenty two.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
So the injury takes a little.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Bit of a lot of time, and especially in the
NFL with there with the shelf life especially for running backs,
is so much more significant.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, I mean, is it is it something that Texans
fans should be concerned about?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I mean probably not, just because like it sounds like
it's a precautionary thing anyway, right, because like if it
was really an injury concern, then they really would be
putting him on.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
It's more of a it's like I think.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
That designate him on day to day, right day to day,
which literally, honestly, you know what that means is it
means they have to put him on the injury report.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
They're required to by the NFL PA.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
It's like a law.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, it's a law. And so that's really just like
more of like a precautionary details. It doesn't like it's
really gonna affect him at all.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
And then of course the New York Jets with the
headline and Thursday with their quarterback. Right when I first
saw the report, Chain, I was like, wait, leg injury,
Like I was seeing leg injury. And then it came
down to the they said lower leg injury, didn't they Yeah,
lower leg injury. It came down to the pinky toe
toe And now he's already back doing drills. He's doing
seven on seven.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
That's just given Jets fans a heart attack for no reason.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
They always have a heart attack though. Yeah, but don't
you get I feel kind of bad for Jets fans.
It feels like because they keep trying different things and
it doesn't work. Work, And I feel like, honestly, at
some point, because you see all the quarterbacks who leave
there and succeed elsewhere, like Sam Darnold, it honestly is
an organizational issue. There are literally organizations that are they
can draft any player in a player that want, any
(02:12):
time of player they want, and they'll succeed elsewhere because
they don't have the organizational structure within to develop them
into what they should be.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, in the Houston I called him the Houston Texans
fan of the fanatics. Alex Rios is in here. He
says no need to play in the preseason, rest upright
and go Texans.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah, they weren't gonna play him. Ce De Stroud and
Nico Collins like guys like that weren't gonna play.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
I mean, the preseason, folks, is for the guys that
are trying to make the roster.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
It's for rookies, guys try to get the roster guys
on like expiring contracts like that are on the the
year to year veteran deals. The guys who are, like
you said, actually have to make the deals every training camp.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
You know, I both know this, You've covered you cover
sports a long time. You and I both understand this.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Thank you for agent. Yet again, it wasn't calling the
second time in the second seven.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
But the reality is, and you know, and training camp
you have ninety players, yes, but realistically there's only fifteen
roster spots each year by each team that's actually available.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
And then you're looking at the practice squad position.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
I'll take a practice squad position, by the way.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
So the good camp and the preseason is really about
getting game tape out there to have your ready for
your next job.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
So I think getting this one.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So you're telling me then that the Pittsburgh Steeler fans
shouldn't be concerned because Aaron Rodgers' first pass that they
get to see in public was an interception. They should
be okay, right.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I mean, my feelings about Aaron Rodgers are a little different.
I don't really you're not a fan of them, No,
I'm not, but I tried, but I also try to
be fair I don't think he's been Aaron Rodgers quote
unquote since twenty twenty one.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
I don't think he's been Aaron Rodgers since well, ever
since that documentary, ever since he was immunized.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
He did there, Yeah, it was the last time he
was he was a good quarterback because as Fannie and
Green Bay did not look accurate, he took a lot
more shots. He was unwilling to move into Matt Laford's
system and adapt more to a Prestat motion, which is
like the what the NFL's become. Right, he goes into
the Jets, gets hurt four passes into the season, and
this last year people talk about his numbers. The majority
of US numbers, if you look at it, were second
(04:00):
half numbers. They were in the deficit. They were going
to run the ball, they had to throw the ball,
so those were desperation numbers. And even those numbers were
average at best. So with Pittsburgh, I love their offensive line,
I love their defense, I love stuff they have around.
Now be in the playoffs, So be in the playoffs.
I don't love Aaron Rodgers the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I just don't think Aaron Rodgers has the drive to say, hey,
I want to win a Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
He just wants to get the drive to get the
playoff money and then get out. He's going to retire
after the season, right, it feels almost obvious. It's like
us saying that. James, he was already asked about it.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
He was already asked about it, remember, and he said, like,
it feels like it's gonna be my last year.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Anytime you have that in your mind, it's already there.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
True. True. And then down in Atlanta, we've seen that
Kirk Cousins debacle. Right, Kirk Cousins says.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Hey, did you watch the Netflix documentary about that?
Speaker 1 (04:44):
I did?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
That was that was kind of tough to watch, kind
of cringy, it hurts.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
You know, but it happens at age and it kind
of reminds you of the movie Any given Sunday. You know, wow,
you know what I mean. And so you kind of
see that with Kirk Cousins in the NFL. Now he
says that I wasn't going to show up. I'm not
going to be there. If I'm not going to be
the starter, I don't want to be there. Well, lo
and behold, I'm sitting there yesterday morning and who's there
in Atlanta at the Falcons training camp. Oh, that's number eighteen,
(05:09):
Kirk Cousins. So Kirk Cousins to me, it does. But
here's my theory on him. He is just staying and
playing and warming up because as soon as a starting
quarterback goes down, right, yep, he's going to get the call,
and Atlanta's going to get the call.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
That might happen sooner than later. Did you see the
news that happened yesterday? No, So the Rams are being
precautious with Matt Stafford because he had he's had lingering.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Sore back issues.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
He's always had that though.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, but I mean he's also what thirty six thirty
seven a reference, he's he's in the twilight of his.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Career, third time this segment age reference. This guy's on
a roll.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
This s I think.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
So you think he could be again he's going to be.
But Atlanta dated something smart right right, They said, hey,
you need to report to camp. They have to because
Atlanta's going to use it for their picks because in
the NFC South, let's be clear, Tampa Bay has a
clear path to being the NFC South champions already penciled in.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
It's very early.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
But if they feel like the best team, they do
feel like the best had they had a good team
lash and they feel like.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
They got better they did, and that's called you know,
Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I think you know what, Baker Mapa is a good
I just talked about a few minutes ago where organizational
failures can hurt a good player. Baker was a good
quarterback and a bad organization Storry Ty Sugic the Browns
and they gave up.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Though.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yes, he now he's in Tampa and he is arguably
a top two or three quarterback at least in then.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
FC, absolutely easily right. I think I think, I say,
I think I had a knee jerk rat. He could
be an MVP candidate. I think so if he can
take Tampa to NFC championship status, if he can take
him to that far, which, by the way, people will say, oh,
it's the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They almost had it two
years ago. They took Detroit down to the final drive
they did, and that was post Tom Brady. That was
(06:49):
you know, and so when you go into a place
that's called post Tom Brady, like ask Patriot fans, you
don't really stay around that much longer. But Baker the
mac Jones, Yes, Baker was determined because we have to
remember Baker's fall, right, It went from Cleveland to Carolina
to the La Rams back and over into Tampa. This
guy had been traded more times than cleveland'sd a starting
quarterback in the past year, you know. And so he's
(07:11):
all about proving himself and he did that in college, yep, right,
and so you know that he wants to get a
Super Bowl. Tampa has signed speed. Tampa will have fifty points,
forty points night in, night out, every Sunday. In my opinion,
the only thing wrong with Tampa is obviously the new
uniforms that have come out. Did you see the cream
sickles that are coming out with them?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
People feel so split about cream scilles. I don't like
the creamsicle look at all, but I don't like it.
But Tampa Bay purists they love it. It's because of
like it's like a history thing, right.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
And speaking of history, right, New York Giants, do we
see how fast history happened there? They named their starting
quarterback after day one, yep, day one. Because Jackson Dark,
the guy from Old Miss he's a rookie. His first
past ready was a pick six, and you could hear
the New York Giants fan in the audio just going, yeah,
but it's also practice. But then the next day, what
(08:03):
happens The New York Giants say, Hey, Russell Wilson's our guy.
How fast was that decision made?
Speaker 2 (08:09):
That felt like it was already pre eminent then, because
they and they signed Jamison Winston actually drafted that guy high. Yeah,
but I feel like they knew that since cam Ward
was out of the rumble possibilities, any quarterback they got
was not going to be ready year one.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
You know, Sanders was laughing when that happened. Now Sanders
is fourth on the depth chart right now, right, but
he's still popular, right.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
But like you and I talked about it back in
March with Tie, the only quarterback that we thought could
go in and be a start of day one was
gonna be cam Ward. True, realistically, so at any quarterback
that was drafted at that had too many flaws that
you would say, we can just rely on you to
be the day one starter. Cam Ward the very least
had enough high upside and was better than what Tennessee
offered to where you were you were.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Going to say, no, we're gonna start well left, This
wasn't gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
No, absolutely, I mean so the NFL obviously, the training camps.
Everybody's just getting ready for the camps. And I believe
preseasons arts this week with the Hall of Fame game.
I think that's this Thursday, isn't it, Shane, Yes, yeah,
so that's the Hall Who is in the Hall of
Fame game?
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I forgot?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Yeah, it's not the Cowboys. But speaking of the Cowboys,
we've kind of saved them for this segment coming up.
Our friend of the show, Joseph Hoyt, stops by from
the Dallas Morning News to cover us all over these
Dallas Cowboys. That's all next on the Fanatics on Ticket
