About SciScouts ACT

SciScouts is Scouts ACT’s STEM and Innovation program established in 2015 to offer exciting STEM opportunities for our youth members. The SciScouts program builds partnerships with local universities and other specialist providers to connect our youth members with passionate experts.

Evidence has shown that hands-on activities are one of the most effective ways to get youth engaged and interested in STEM. The strength of Scouting is the hands-on practical programs that they deliver according to the “Learning by Doing” ethos of the Scouting organisation, within a Plan > Do > Review methodology. SciScouts is nurturing an already naturally inquisitive audience of young people; SciScouts just provides the opportunities to build excitement, influence career aspirations, and aim to foster pure and simple inspiration in science discovery and innovation.

Scouts Australia has recently introduced a new Award Scheme which includes STEM & Innovation, as one of six new Special Interest Areas (SIAs). SIAs encourage Scouts to try new things and to progress through their existing interests. Scouts will be involved in the cycle of Plan > Do > Review > for a project or activity related to one of the Special Interest Areas. This involves the Scout setting personal goals with support from others.

By injecting broader STEM into existing programs SciScouts support Leaders to further enhance the experience of the youth members. This also strengthens the skills of our youth members and Leaders and provides them with confidence to lead similar activities. This is achieved by participation activities, events and workshops. We will also deliver resource materials to support Leaders in maintaining the momentum and interest that is generated.

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
