Speaker 2 (00:39):
Hey, what's going on everybody? Welcome back to another episode
of the Fortified Life podcast where we are passionate about
developing a dependency on Jesus in the marketplace. I'm your host,
Jason Davis aka mister fortifive. Every week we have the
opportunity to bring on authors, speakers, coaches, CEOs, leaders and
(00:59):
nonprofits that are also passionate about putting God back in
business and folks, as you know, it's no different this week.
Very excited about our guests today. Let me tell you
a little bit more about him before we start the conversation.
Todd Hopkins is the founder and CEO of the Strategic
(01:20):
Thinking Network, an organization dedicated to teaching business owners and
entrepreneurs to think strategically about how to scale their business
and impact in a way that is grounded in Biblical principles.
This is done through quarterly workshops held in Tampa. Todd
also leverages his business experience as an investor, speaker, and
(01:43):
business coach for entrepreneurs wanting to scale their business and
achieve their dreams. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to the Fortified Life,
Todd Hopkins, Todd, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Man?
Speaker 4 (01:54):
Hey, Jason, thank you for having me. Mife's good.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Indeed, life is good, well, Todd. When people look at
your bio, they say, man, he absolutely does a lot,
and you are a grace to do a lot. But Todd,
kind of take us back a little bit in the
time machine and give us some insight on your professional background,
because we know you didn't wake up in twenty twenty
(02:19):
five doing what you're doing today.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
So give us the journey of how you got here.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Oh man, Well, professionally, I tell people, the most profitable
business I've ever had was in the second grade. I
was selling bubblegum at the public elementary school when it
wasn't allowed, so the demand was extremely high and the
markup was great. And you know, I've just wanted to
be an entrepreneur all my life, and I actually my
(02:47):
first business as a grown up was office Pride. So
I had written a business research paper as part of
my MBA program at Butler University, and it was on
how to franchise in a janitorial industry. So I got
class credit for it. I created the business plan, started
(03:08):
the business, and by grace of God, you know, grew that.
He blessed it with, blessed me with lots of really
great people. And so we basically were like the janitors
that come in and we decided grow through franchising, using
that franchising model. So over the course of thirty years,
(03:28):
God really blessed that we, you know, had one hundred
and fifty franchise locations in twenty eight stays about six
thousand people cleaning buildings every night. We're in the Office Pride, Jersey.
It was a faith based model and so that's where
all my experience comes in. It's just helping and teaching
and coaching, creating systems for our franchisees grow their business.
(03:52):
And then I tell people now that I've transitioned out
of that into this new thing, strategic thing network. I
tell people that I feel like Office Pride thirty years
there was like a training ground for this. So now
you know, I've shifted into pouring into CEOs who want
to scale their business and their kingdom impact. And I'm
(04:14):
doing it through these quarterly workshops. But professionally, just a
lot of learning. I mean, you know, just like you, Jason,
I mean, I enjoy learning, so I'm always trying to
get better myself and I'm trying to learn to teach.
And so that's what I've been doing the last thirty
five years.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Wow, and Todd, thank you for that breakdown. And there
was a couple of questions that came to mind Todd.
One working with franchises and the franchising business model. Obviously
there's a number of different models you can have out there.
With Todd, in your experience, what have you found that
(04:54):
is so advantageous about that model of having a franchise.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Well, I always would tell people that because you try
to grow a business and it's hard to find great people.
And I always say franchises and never call in sick.
I mean, they just always they're focused. We have same goals.
They're wanting to grow their business. If I can help
them grow their business by default, that's also growing mind
as a franchise or but a lot of businesses who
(05:23):
choose to get into franchising are to expand using that model,
mainly because they've got a really good business that others
want to duplicate and people will pay to do that
to get that learning curve and then the core business,
Like in my case, I could expand using their dreams
(05:48):
and their motivation and their money to enter into new
markets and then they're growing a business and achieven their
dreams and I'm able to expand more and faster using
the franchise this model. So it's not for everybody, and
it's it's not easy. It's it's harder, I think than
it used to be because there's so much competition. But
(06:09):
if you've got a good business, it's a great way
to expand, and so there's so much more to it
than that, But the bottom line is it's a way
to grow using other people's motivation and their money.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Very cool, a lot of lessons. They are leveraging a
current business that does good business and being able to
think about to the future with scaling. So definitely see
the advantages there, you know, Todd and working with franchise
ors franchisees obviously people are at the center of that
(06:45):
and what are some lessons you've learned from working with people?
Because I would imagine, while while you mentioned earlier about
people being on the same page, has there been any
cases where you know you're not on the same page
or you realize like, oh, well this person kind of
started out here and you realize they were kind of
somewhere else. What's some of the people lessons you've learned
(07:08):
in that side of the business.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Oh, I've learned a ton. There have been so many
good relationships. There's been other relationships you wish you could forget,
But I would say the main thing is, you know,
just shoot straight, be honest, and care about people. I mean,
when people see you care, they'll they'll go the extra
(07:31):
mouth for you. And you know, there's a zig Ziglar
used to say there's no traffic jam on the extra mouth.
So I think, you know, there's not a whole lot
of people out there. So we used to teach and
train people that you know, we want to go the
extra mouth for our customers and put customers first. So
I think the biggest lesson is get to know the
people up front before you enter into agreement with them,
(07:51):
and if you you know, if you don't feel right
about it, don't do it. So it's like, you know,
some people call it gut feelings. I got a bad
gut feeling about that guy. But for us as believers,
it's probably the Holy Spirit saying don't do it, don't
do it. And I would say my biggest lesson is
when I didn't listen to that and move forward anyway,
(08:12):
it never worked out.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
And so what that's taught me over the years is
if I don't have peace about somebody, if I don't
have a good gut feeling about them, I'm going to
say no, I'm going to not move forward for whatever
the reason may be, and may not even know the reason, right.
And so I've learned to listen to what I would
(08:36):
believe to be the Holy Spirit guiding me because I'm
praying about these decisions, right. I mean, if we're praying
about something, then it's not unreasonable to think that the
Holy Spirit won't guide us if we're listening. So that's
a big lesson. I also know that when people own
their own business, they're more committed to it. You know,
(08:59):
they've bet a lot invested in it. So but I've
had a lot of wonderful people over the years, and
you know, very thankful for all those relationships, and there're
gonna be some bad apples, but listen, we cannot let
that bad apple keep us from moving forward. And so
it's so demotivating to have, especially in the cleaning business,
(09:19):
you have somebody who were just a terrible employee. We
don't we just go keep hiring and then just just
build on the good ones and don't let the bad
ones slow you down.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
For sure, you know, to that sets up a perfect
segue question. You know, the Holy Spirit is with us
and business. What was a major turning point? Free I'm
sure you have several, but what was maybe one or
two big turning points in your life? It could be
personal or it could be in the marketplace that God
(09:54):
really shifted your perspective.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Yeah, well there's been so many. I don't know that
perspective is an interesting word. So I became a believer.
I grew up in church, but I really became a
believer just as a young business guy. And you know,
I wanted to be successful and I heard about these
(10:20):
guys that were meeting over as in Indianapolis at the time,
and there was these business guys meeting. It's like Christian
CBMC Christian businessmen, and I got invited to that and
I wanted to go because I thought, Okay, a bunch
of successful business guys and I can make some contacts.
I can help me be successful. And then I get
over there and these guys are like talking about Jesus.
(10:42):
There's like thirty business guys in this room, all older
than me, and I was in my twenties and they're
talking about Jesus. And I started thinking, man, I do
I have that relationship with Christ they're talking about. And
so I went on this journey for about six months
trying to figure out for sure because I knew up
in church, but ultimately I trusted Jesus as my Lord
(11:04):
and savior. This was in nineteen eighty nine October fifteenth,
exactly nineteen eighty nine. But it was really the example
these Christian businessmen were setting, and they were telling me
about it and how to do it, and I wanted that.
So that was a big turning point. And then, of course,
when I started off with pride, I got to the wave,
(11:25):
the white flag moment where I was out of cash
and I was praying and asking God for guidance and
telling God I felt like you were giving me the
green light on this all the way. And it was
just shortly after that he brought a man into my
life again through the ministry of CBMC, who began to
teach me how to pray for favor and wisdom. And
(11:46):
all of a sudden, customers started coming, and then over
and over again. It seems like God just comes through
one week after the other, one year after the other,
one daycade after the next. I mean, it's amazing. And
now I feel like I'm learning more than ever because
I've been on this pursuit of the immeasurably more. Other words,
(12:09):
what is the immeasurably more that Paul writes about in
Ephesians three twenty and so I'm going through this transition
what I've been doing for thirty years into something new,
and I just started praying God, I'm not done pursuing
the immeasurably more. What's that look like? And He's beginning
to show me what does it mean to pursue measurably more.
(12:30):
So I feel like Jason, that even though I've been
around for a while, I'm growing more now than ever.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
And so you get me fired up to the immeasurably more.
I love that, and folks, for all the listeners out there,
there is immeasurably more that's available to you as a
follower of Christ. And I love when you will talk
about CBMC here in a second, Todd, just you saw
(12:57):
as a young guy, you saw successful and everybody's chasing success.
But then you get to you befriend them and get
in relationship and you realize, wait a minute, it's almost
upside down. Not that they didn't talk about strategy and tactics,
but you realize that there there was a savior who
(13:18):
who who loves us and gave his life for us,
and as a result of that salvation and transformation, then
we understand, oh there's a different way of doing life
and doing business. I just I just love what you're
talking about. The proximity of of once you got saved
in the discipleship of being in community at CBMC, and
(13:43):
so Todd.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Let's talk about that.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
There's a little bit of history lesson there for the folks.
What has your involvement been within CBMC. We'll give a
couple of shout outs here in a second, But you
talked about the impact CBMC has had. But what are
some other things that you do with CBMC the Christian
Businessman's connection.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Well, I, of course when in nineteen eighty nine when
I prayed to receive Christ, and it was through the
ministry of CBMC that I went under conviction and I
ultimately made that decision. And then there was a young
guy who had invited me to all that, who offered
to take me through a one on one discipleship study
called Operation Timothy, which is really big with CBMC. So
(14:29):
we did that every Wednesday morning for a couple of years.
So he poured into me and I had a thousand questions. Man,
I put this guy through the ringer, but he was
right there. And then part of the program and the
idea is that once you go through as a Timothy,
then you take somebody through as a Paul. And so
I've been doing that with different people every since, and
(14:51):
every time take somebody through as the Paul. I learned
more and more and so developed these relationships in Indianapolis,
and then I was in Pennsilcoli and now in Tampa.
And then about eleven years ago I felt and I
was part of the leadership team here and so about
eleven years ago, I felt that God was putting in
(15:13):
my heart to bring together young people. It's like, who's
serving these young business people like when I was young.
And so we started this young professional group, the Peer
Group Mastermind Group behind closed doors here in Tampa, and
we had ten guys sign up right away, one didn't show,
started with nine and then that just started to take
(15:36):
off and other cities began to do that, and so
that's been a real blessing to watch that. And then
I love to go around the country share my testimony
at different outreach events and so I've just been grassroots.
CBMC has been a big part of my life. I
got served on the national board for a period of time,
(15:57):
and you know, so it's good to see it not
just from a local level, but from a national level
and even international. I mean it's as big internationally as
it is here in America because it's grown from the
US to other countries. So it's exciting to see what
So there's CBMC things happening all the time. Even in
(16:18):
the last couple of months, Jason had spoken in a
few events and they get to meet you people and
see people come and know the Lord. It's awesome.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Thanks for taking time out to share and shout out
to a mutual friend of ours, John Posey, the area
director of Metro Atlanta CBMC. I work with John and
I've known him from twenty twenty and I went through
the Young Professional Program as well, Todd. And now where
God is building and scaling the ministry down here, so
(16:53):
very excited about what he's doing, and you being one
of the guys that helped lay the ground work for
doing so.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
Yeah, well, I'd like to shout out to John too.
I mean this, he's a warrior on the front lines
for Christ in the marketplace. And and you know, John
and I've known each other for a while now, and
I remember his vision for starting yp in Atlanta when
there was no one, and so it's very exciting to
(17:22):
see what God's done through him through you. I mean,
there are more Young Professional groups in Atlanta than any
other city in the United States right now with CBMC.
So God's doing great things there for sure.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Absolutely, you know, Todd. One of the ways that wisdom,
timeless wisdom is captured for folks and books, and you're
an author of a number of books. I just wanted
to take a moment, Todd, to kind of go through
your book portfolio for the listener out there, because again, Todd,
(17:55):
you've got all this experience working with people, process tools,
and so just wanted to shout you out for what
God has given you and you being able to download
all of these lessons. So just wanted to step through
a few of them here. So I think, Todd, you've
(18:16):
got five Wisdoms for entrepreneur survival, practical experience and biblical perspective.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
One, Well, that was my first book. That's really all
about starting office pride from scratch. It also gets into
when I did meet this mentor and it was at
a CBMC event and of course we're on this live
(18:46):
podcast and the Dog's Market. I don't know if you
can hear.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
It, but no, you're good, I can't hear it.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
We forget that I said, but it was this. The
Five Wisdoms for Entrepreneurial Surviving really is about this relationship
ship that I had with this mentor who was teaching
me how to pray for favor and wisdom and and
to survive as entrepreneur. So my written testimony is actually
in there. His is in there, but it's it really
(19:15):
helps people focus on biblical principles for operating your business
and giving God to credit. Look, God wants the credit
and and you know, the quickest way Pastor Tony Evans
would say, the quickest way to reverse or halt greatness
is to not give God to credit. Right, So, anything
good that's happening God, you know, God is expecting to
get the credit. When he's blessing us. We start to
(19:37):
take credit for ourselves. We have to be careful.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
So huge Todd.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
The next one, you have another one called the Janitor,
How an unexpected friendship transformed as CEO and his company.
What's the key message in that one?
Speaker 4 (19:56):
Yeah, so that that's really about h there's six directives
in there, and really there's just it's a parable, but
these six directives are about you know, a janitor, old
retired guy who's cleaning this business. He's been there and
done that, but he needs something to do, and he
starts mentoring a CEO of the company who owns the
(20:19):
building where he's got this part time cleaning job. And
the CEO's lives falling apart, and the janitor really teaches
him six life directives on how to you know, get
life balanced with his business's family and the focus on
the right things.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I love that, Todd.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
I'm a huge fan of my business fables and parables
as well, because it takes the lessons and crystallizes them
in story form. And it's been my experienced most of
the time when you read ones like that, most people go,
oh am, I that character in the story and it
causes self reflection. So anybody he's read any of like
(21:01):
the Patrick Lencioni books and things like that, it's very
cool storytelling.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Yeah. Well, typically there's like there's real lessons to learn
from my real life, and then the story is fiction.
And of course I'll plug in names, you know, first
names of people just for fun, like family members. But yeah,
it's all I like. The fiction is kind of to me,
it's easy to write because you can you can just
(21:27):
create what you want to create.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
But I enjoyed that absolutely, and then Todd, We've got
I imagine this was a powerful one. The Stressless business Owner. Now,
stress is something that everybody in business deals with. What
was the motivation for writing that book?
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Well, the motivation there was pretty simple. I was laying
flat on my back back in an hospital emergency room
that my doctor had sent me there and said, man,
you're either in the middle of a heart attack or
you're about to have one. And you know, I'm thinking,
I'm forty six years old at the time, got a
good business, got a wonderful family, I love the Lord
(22:09):
with all my heart, and I'm thinking, surely this isn't
how life ends for me. Right in the hall I
was in the hallway of an emergency room. And so
I fortunately made it to that it was all stress
and it was just things I carry and I ultimately,
then four years later, I in two thousand and sixteen,
(22:32):
I made a commitment that, you know what, I'm going
to get stressed out of my life. And so I
just started making a list. Every time something stressed me,
I wrote it down and then I started praying, asking
God to provide me the solution. And so I ended
up with ten things. And so I have ten disciplines
for a stress less business in life. And there's it
(22:55):
worked for me. And so ultimately I put it into
a book and hopefully has helped a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Oh and I believe it will Todd.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
I don't think there's a person walking in business even
if even if they think they're okay. I think that
that book is a great will service grade accountability of
Hey maybe you know, especially God giving you those ten
like maybe take a step back and you may be
a little bit more stressed out than what you think
(23:25):
you are.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
So yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely on that front. Well, I
had to go back and read it myself every now
and just to reinforce the good habits in my own life.
Mm hm.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
The last one here that I wanted to touch on Todd,
which I love the title of this one, and that
stop stop using the B word. How to overcome distractions
by replacing busy with productive? Talk about I think this
(23:58):
might be your latest book, but talk about that one
and and how being busy is well, you know, the
ultimate B word, But how do we replace that with productivity?
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Yeah? Sure, I mean, well it is the latest, that's
where my passion is right now. It's my really most
popular keynote. And we basically I just got tired of
you know, I'd get an email or a phone call
so much. Oh time, I know you're busy. I was
wondering if you could call me. I think, why are
you call me busy. You don't even know me. You know,
I started viewing it as an insult, really, because I
(24:35):
don't want to be busy. I want to be productive.
I want to get things done. You know. I made
a decision years ago that I wanted only little on
this earth. One time, I want to make life count
and and I'll never forget one time. I come home
from work and my wife just asked me this innocent question, like, oh,
how was work today, And it's been a frustrating day,
(24:56):
and I don't know what slipped out. I just said, oh, man,
I feel like I've been all day, didn't get a
single thing done, And man, listen. She looked at me.
She wasn't very impressed with that. I mean, you think
about it. Here, I am, I'm away and I and
then I realized, you know, when when I leave the
house in the morning, and I owe it to my
(25:18):
wife and to my family that, oh, my return, I
have advanced us in some way not been so busy
that I wasn't able to get anything done. And so
I made a commitment that day that I was going
to stop using the B word. I wasn't going to
label myself as busy. And I wasn't going to let
anybody else do it, and so I just replaced that
with the word productive. So now you know, she goes, oh,
(25:39):
how was your day, I can go I was a
productive It's a lot better. And so ultimately my productivity
I call it four x. I mean it increased significantly.
And then even at office pride, I mean we we
created a great culture of not using the B word.
(26:00):
And you know when words have power. Jason, Yeah, you
catch your you know, I got where I can catch
myself being busy now and flip the switch very quickly
and shift into productivity. So it's it's not like completely
busy free, but there's not a lot of busyness there anymore.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
I hear you and Todd speaking of being productive. So
you have your life experience, you've penned down many books,
international bestseller and now you've got strategic thinking network and
you hold the quarterly events. Talk more about how you
work with business owners today and the impact of those
(26:44):
having that quarterly cadence.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Yeah, so it's powerful. These are in person, Jason. We
have a nice hotel there by the Tampa airport and
people can fly in or you know, if their local
drive over. The class is limited to twenty eight people.
So and then so twenty eight people go through this
once a quarter as a group. And so we have
(27:09):
high level teaching on strategic thinking and critical thinking and
get this. As believers, we have access to third thinking.
I mean, if business people can think strategically and critically.
Most can't do both. They good at maybe one of them.
But if you can be good at both of those,
then you can produce next level results. I mean when
(27:32):
you can start to look at goals and actions but
then also challenge assumptions and look at logic and facts
and trends with the critical thinking. That's that's awesome. But listen,
the third level thinking we have access to as believers
in business is eternal thinking.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Yeah, that's good.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
And so all of a sudden, if we can start
asking questions like, well, what's God's will on this matter?
What was God thinking when he created us? What was
his original intent when he knitted us together in our
mother's womb, that's when we can start to really tap
into and pursue the immeasurably more so, if you really
want to scale your business, we don't leave anything on
(28:10):
the table when we choose to follow God with our business.
So that's what this is all about. It's these three tracks, strategic, critical,
and eternal. And I'm working with the CEOs of these
companies directly who want to scale their business, like God
has called them to growth, but they also want to
grow their kingdom impact. And so when you get twenty
(28:31):
eight people in the room that are like minded in
that way, it's a powerful thing. So I really didn't
know what was going to happen. We started with our
first class, which is sold out this you know, this year,
and it's been wonderful. And now we have a new
class launching in January of twenty twenty six, and then
(28:55):
you know, we'll see what God does from there. So
but people enjoy Boy, these CEOs, I have their undivided
attention when they're in person. So many folks on zoom Man,
they're answering emails there. They got a thousand other things happening.
They're distracted. We talk about that distraction zone. So it's
(29:18):
been a blessing. I like learning and creating and teaching,
and I think, like I said, Office Pride was training
grounds for this, and this is the lane that God
has for me and I'm having a blast.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
As we get ready to land the plane, you kind
of answered it a little bit. I was going to say,
you know, we're about to end twenty twenty five and
heading into twenty twenty six. You've got the next one
coming up in January. What else are you excited about
about what God is doing as we close out the
(29:54):
year and go forward into twenty twenty six.
Speaker 4 (29:57):
Yeah, yeah, Well that would be my specific thing with
the Strategic Thinking Network because I'm seeing him working there,
and then I do some CEO coaching. So for me,
I'm excited about all that because I love teaching and
I like to live by carefully through some of these CEOs,
you know, just watch them grow their business. I'm excited
(30:20):
to see what God's doing through the ministry at CBMC,

and there's a lot of great people in that organization.

so I think that ministry is getting legs. It's getting younger.

I say young, I'm talking about people between the ages
of twenty five and forty five, who are just They're
coming out like crazy, these young businessmen. So I think

(31:05):
are right in the middle of it there in Atlanta, Jason,
so that I'm incredibly excited about that. I know that's
part of what God called me to do and look
forward to continuing to be part of it for sure.
