I had to think about who he was talking about. Man,
I'm just at wow at all with God in the
amazing favor over my life right now.

I am totally fine with the well tey, you know
to that to that point. You know, people they they
they hear and they read that bio and they go,
oh my gosh, that that is wonder woman right there.
And I know you said it's a favor of the Lord.
But maybe give our audience the what was the journey? Like,
we know you just didn't wake up in twenty twenty

five and you have a nonprofit you know, you're raising
millions and funding you You're very balanced and you understand
both the nonprofit space and business, which is a kind
of a rarity because some people in both both sides
of the coin they kind of struggle sometimes like yeah,
(03:51):
I understand sales, Oh now got to ask people for
money or hey, I understand asking people for money on
the nonprofit side, but I kind of struggle with the
sales thing.

So you have a breath of experience.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
But talk to us about the journey and how you
got to where you are today.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
So it was I once was a twinkle in my
mother's eye. Start back that far.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
I want to start from when I was a homeless
youth in Covenant House, California. And I want to start
there because when I found myself after a numerous just
tragic events that happened that led me to becoming homeless
(04:38):
at nineteen, I realized that the organization that was there
that I was able to go to that not only.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Gave me food to three square.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
Meals a day and helped me and helped me get
a job and help me go back to college.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I was like, Who's paying for all this?
Speaker 5 (05:01):
And it started the cycle of me the search of
how do you pay for this?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And so I.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Started working at nonprofit educational institutions to learn that administration side,
the fundraising side, the development side at a very early age.
And so I ended up graduating from the Covenant House
California program, and I'm to this day one of their
success stories because when you graduate from the program, the

goal is for you to become a self sufficient adult
and to.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Be able to give back.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
It's been has been an amazing opportunity for me. So
I started that journey and then when I met my
husband at that time, my friend, and.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
He told me what he wanted to do with you know,
one day when I.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Get older, we were both around twenty two to twenty three,
and one day when I get older, I just want
to be able to be a blessing to God's people
and I just want to give back. So well, we
have to be successful first in order to do that,
and we started this journey together on learning more about
business because we felt like the way that God was

going to do that through us was through business and
real estate. So my husband when we got married, my
husband and I, we immediately started working on our first
business and it was called G One Publishing.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
It was a publishing company and we created cards and
printed just.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
All kinds of printed things and we sold that business
and we started. We moved here from the Virgin Islands
where we were mission missionaries for about four or five years,
and when we moved to Atlanta, we saw this huge
real estate opportunity and from there we started purchasing real
(07:02):
estate and then we got swindled by the developers and
lost six figures in just one month, and it was devastating.
We had to start from scratch and now we were
back at zero. When the recession hit, we couldn't do
anything but pray and ask God for a strategy. And
(07:26):
while all of this is happening. And during the recession,
what happens. The arts teachers started losing their jobs. They started,
you know, removing jobs in the course the arts is
not that important, they say, hey, right, and so they
take the arts out of the schools during the recession.
And now we have all of these kids without the
(07:47):
opportunity to express themselves while in school. And we thought, well,
we're pretty creative and we have all this equipment, we
should really look at doing something about this. So we
put out flyers. Now I'm going to tell people not
to do this, but I created flyers, and I went
(08:09):
to the bus stops of the high schoolers and I
passed out the flyers. Here, I am twenty three year
twenty at that point, four two thousand and eight, somewhere
in my twenties, and I'm passing out flyers at the
high school bus stops, telling them, hey, I'm going to
create I'm creating this Friday night. It's going to be
(08:32):
like a party, but it's not a party. You're gonna
get a chance to learn more about the arts. And
then we just like throw in some Bible study in there.
But they didn't know it was called Bible study because
we we covered it up in the form of our education.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
So and so the.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
First night, three kids showed up and we're like, okay,
I'm like two of the kids we knew the parents.
So it was like, okay, we got something. That kids
went and got their friends, and every week it continued
to grow. By the end of summer, we had forty
kids in our two bedroom apartment and we were like, okay,
(09:12):
we got something here, and then they didn't want to leave.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
We would we.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Were like okay, guys, time to go home, and they
would just want to hang out.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
We had my.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Husband, who was a music producer at the time. He
was like, I have this equipment. They can learn how
to make beats, they can learn how to wrap and
I would have a background in theater and vocal and
I was like, okay, let's create a singing group and
let's do this. And we started really honing in on
(09:43):
these arts gifts and we were like what is it,
asking my husband, what is it that we're doing here?
And that's what we created art Portunity Knocks. That was
the birth of Artportunity Knocks. So in two thousand and eight, Ourpportunity.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Knocks was born. That's a r T.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
So it's his opportunities to spend on opportunity now because
what we what we were giving kids was the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
To explore the arts, and.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
So when we did that, we said, Okay, we can't
have them here. Our primary complex is complaining and we
need to do something.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
We need a building, we need So everything that we.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
Started praying for for this organization started manifesting because we
started first.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
A lot of times people wait until like I'm just
waiting on God.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
I'm waiting to hear from God, and God like if
you just start go, faith is now. So you just
start start and then God will start bringing the resources.
If you don't have the money, I guarantee you the
money will come when you are walking, when you were walking.
(10:56):
That's that's how we got here. Is now the city
sixteenth year of the organization was the seventeen years of
the organization's existence. We now have second generation of students
in our program. So those kids that were kids in
two thousand and eight now have kids in our program today.
(11:16):
And we have of course, I had to learn how
to raise money really quickly, and I learned through trial
and error. But then someone took me under their wing
and trained me on how to raise money for a
nonprofit and that's when I started raising millions.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Ty yeah, hold on, we got real estate, we got
the arts, we got business.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
What what would.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
You say, especially having experience in both, what are maybe
some misconceptions that it's kind of twofold question, misconceptions people
have about the nonprofit space, and then maybe for our
nonprofit people, some misconceptions they have about the business side.
Speaker 5 (12:06):
In your opinion, Well, the number one misconception about the
nonprofit space is that you can't make money.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
The number one because they.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Think the word nonprofit means that you can't generate a
profit in order to for your organization to be sustainable.
Your profit turning is from you over don't over raising,
you overraise what you need so that you can go
into the next year with a positive cash flow.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
So a lot of times what people do is and.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
I actually, excuse me, I actually received a phone call
recently from one of my students and they said, well,
I'm going to have money at the end of the year,
So am I supposed to just empty out the bank account.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
And make it go back to zero or what? I said? No, no, no, no,
that's not what you do.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
No nonprofit just simply means that you don't have shareholders.
The owner doesn't take equity stake in the business. You
don't have dividends that's coming to you. Instead, the investment
is going back into the community. It's going back into
the organization, and you redirect those extra funds to other
(13:28):
causes that you probably missed the previous year. That's all
that means. So I'm going to tell all nonprofits to
try to make a profit so that you can have
funds during the for the next fiscal year.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
On the business side, I'm going to.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
Tell you this, I have yet to learn the art
of the sale.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
I have yet to learn the art of the sale.

I believe that the best way to grow your business
is relationships and marketing.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
And that relationship marketing.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
And if you cannot, if you're saying I don't want
to go on social media, I just don't do that stuff,
you're already missing out on.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
The relationship building piece. Let me tell you something.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
I have built some of the strongest, my strongest business
relationships by Instagram, dms and linked LinkedIn emails. And so
if you don't think that building those relationships is important,
then you're missing out on a critical aspect of your
business growth.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
So I would say, if you are.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Interested in growing your business, you're going to have to
reach out to people. You got to be a people's person.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
And if you're not the people's person, hire somebody who is.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
That's huge, that's huge time. I think that's a perfect segue.
Tie with your experiences because you are someone that has
been involved in multiple ventures in your life. So we
already talked about opportunity talk to us about We'll start
with businessgrants dot com. Uh, tell us about that, and

then we'll get into because folks, she's also an author.
But let's start with business grants dot Com. What is
that and how do you serve people through that entity?
Speaker 5 (15:29):
So business Brand Inc. Has two entities under it. It
has Business Grants dot Com and Business Grants dot Io.
Business Brand dot Io is the technology. It's the app
that fuels this grant match that I built, this algorithm
that I built to help funders match with nonprofit slash businesses.

So what you do is you put your information in
one time and then the.

Algorithm does the work. The rest of the work, it
goes out.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
It's AI powered, so it's looking for live grants for you,
and then it'll take you over to Sandy, our in
house AI grant writer and tell you this is how
you're going to apply for this grant. So that technology
has been ten months in the making and it was
just recently released in October twenty five. Then you have

business grants dot Com, which is the coaching slash education
slash community and that's where.

You have the hands on teaching from.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Myself, from other experts in this field, in the fundraising
field and grant writing field.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
And every week.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
You're going to get someone from our community who's going to.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Train you on how to write grants.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
How does grant judges judge grants, because that's another thing.
If you don't know how they judge in the grants,
then you don't know exactly.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
What you need to put in the grants.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
So sometimes we put what we want to put instead
of putting what the grant judges want to hear. And
as long as you're being authentic and honest in your application,
you're going to get a grant. It's so many people
out there that are not they're doing good things in
the community, but they've never won a grant, and I'm like,
(17:21):
why you should have already won a grant by now
if you're in the second year, at least in your
second year of serving the community. So my job is
to get that information out to the community and to
the business owners because there are grants for for profit
business and nonprofits, so a lot that's the biggest misconception.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Is that there aren't any grants for for profits.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
But instead of telling them, hey, there's no grants out
there for you, I will first go and look at
my business grants dot Io grant match system to see
if there is a grant for you. I just found
recently that there is a grant even for those.

Who have podcasts.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
Yet there was a podcast brand the application just recently closed.
That grant was for twenty five thousand dollars. So imagine
if you had a twenty five thousand dollars grant, which
by the way, I have a podcast that I want
to grant, and I was able to get equipment like
this lighting equipment I wish I could show you.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
But.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Oh it actually intend show you, guys, just give you
a little except so I have like these lights here,
we have even great video makers. We have video screens here.
All of this were bought with grant and cameras in
the back. All of that was bought with grant funds.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
Wow, that's awesome. Time grants for podcasts too, that that
is huge.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
So, folks, if here this is why you.

We talked about nonprofit grants. It keeps getting better. So, Ty,
you wrote the House the Pigs Built with seven bricks,
building an organization to last. What's the big idea around
(19:37):
that book and what are some key takeaways you'd like
readers to leave with.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Okay, So this book, I do believe came straight from having.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Through my three year old.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
I would tell her the story about the three little pigs,
and as I was going through the story, I started
getting the correlation between the type of mindset the pig
with the straw house had and then there was a
stick house, and then there was the brick house.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
And they all had three different mindsets, and I was like,
pretty this was this wasn't just a house.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
These pigs thought differently and they built their house based
on the way they were thinking. And I think that
there are so many business owners out there who are
just like those pigs, who they want to prop a
house up real quick, which is aka your business. And
so you have those hey house businesses out there. They
(20:42):
barely have their LLC, they have an EI in or
maybe not. They don't have any other foundational things in place.
They don't have a website, they don't have social media,
they don't have.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
You know, in an I'm talking.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
About for profits right now, but the book was written
for nonprofits, and then the for profit book is coming
out very soon, but.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
It goes hand in hand. Both are going to.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
Talk about the three little pigs and all of them.
How the seventh breaks are the seventh foundational just all
of about foundation. The foundation of your business is why
the big bad wolf can't blow it down.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
So when I talk about the big bad.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Wolf, I'm talking about circumstances and situations that could possibly
knock your house down. So what happens when the I
R S comes and audits your business as a nonprofit. Well,
if it was built with hey, you're not going to stand.
They're they're gonna blow your house down. If you have
your financials in order, then you your house will stand.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
But then let's say you have horrible HR.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
Practices and you have no SOPs, which is the stickhouse.
You have no SOPs, which are standard operating procedures. So
that means every time somebody is hired, they're doing something
different in that role, and as a result, you don't
have continuity in.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
The way that your business is being delivered.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
So now somebody can then leave a bad review, beig
bad Wolf.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
They're gonna go.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
On Amazon, They're gonna go on on Google or Yelp,
and they're gonna leave a bad review. And you know,
reviews can knock the house down. One bad review from
the right person can knock the house down.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
And so that's why we move over to.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
The brick house and all of the bricks that's in
the brick house. And I want you guys to get
the book because I talk about what each brick is
and why it's important to have those bricks in place.
In order for your house, though, to get knock knocked down. Now,
it won't get knocked down the regular way like the

other houses.

However, in the book The Three Little.

Pigs, the brick House, the big bad wolf climbed through
the chimney.

To get on the inside.

So I talk about the wolf that's on the inside
that could pry the wolf that's on the inside bad hires,
like bad employees. That's the wolf on the inside. Is
how your house gets blown away. It gets emploded. It

doesn't get blown away. It goes down.

From the inside out.

Aka, you got people on jumbo trons, you know, being
cut up.

You know I'm talking about you know when I'm.

Talking about there's some some major scandals that's going on
right now because the wolf on the inside wasn't dealt with.

Yeah, that's good.

So it's important that even though you may be a
brick house, your house is solid.

You guys have you guys have s ops.
Speaker 5 (24:03):
You have your your LLC in order, you have your
e I N on nonprophesized, you have your bylaws, you
got a board of directors, fundraising team, you have all
these things in place, your marketing, social media, and then
you get down to.

The wolf that's on the inside.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
And because you're not doing the work on yourself now prize,
because a prideful leader can take a house down as well.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Absolutely, man, that is huge, folks, make sure you get
go out and get a copy. Already already bought it.
I told Tyy before we got on. I made sure
it's not just about supporting her. These uh, these bricks
are foundational to an organization. So again, make sure the

hundred to twenty five hundred for grant writer, a.

Professional grand writer like me.

And so what I've done is partnered with an amazing
company that will allow you all to get a grant
right written for you for.
