In this excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in the studio by Monica Emery, the Executive Director at the Center for World Music. The Center for World Music is an organization that aims to bring musicians to audiences, reaching as many people of all backgrounds as possible. They recognize that there are many musicians in the community who are masters of their craft and who can share their culture and talents through their music.

Monica and the Center for World Music recognize that there is a gap between the diversity in our local community and the diversity in the music education curriculum. Music education now focuses mainly on Western traditions but would be even more impactful and beneficial if it reflected the diversity of students.

Hear Monica talk about the benefits of a diverse musical education. Music can be used to learn about culture and history from different parts of the world. music is about expression, values, and community, not only just career and performance.

An excellent episode on filling gaps in the community with Monica Emery. Here are some other takeaways from the interview:
  • How Monica got involved in the Center for World Music
  • The importance of music in education
  • The challenges that the Center for World Music and Musicians face
  • The most memorable story Monica has read
  • The answer to the rapid-fire questions

An excellent interview from a passionate gap minder. Thank you, Monica, for your contributions in San Diego, and for joining us on The Gap Minders.
