Speaker 1 (00:04):
Don't Way Go Go travel show at the Pittsburgh Travel Showcase,
Johnny Hertwell, and I'm talking to Shannon from Viking. All right.
So what I love about the showcase is that I
get introduced to things that maybe I haven't done before.
You know, I'm kind of an all inclusive kind of
Caribbean kind of guy. But then I see your booth
with Viking, and I'm intrigued. Now I'm like, I'm getting

(00:25):
to the point where I have seen almost every Caribbean
island and I'm looking for something different. So tell me
everything we need to know about Viking.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Okay, Well, Johnny, I would love to tell you everything
you need to know about Viking. How I first like
to always say it is people do that, just like yourself.
Love the fun and sun, love all the islands, Mexico, Caribbean.
But there's a point in your life, Johnny, where you
say to yourself, I feel like I want to see more.
I feel like I want to explore this amazing world

(00:54):
we live in. I want to go to Europe, I
want to go to Australia. I want to go to
New Zealand. And so that's where we come in. Okay,
Viking does have some ships and some sailings in the
Caribbean islands, but most of where we travel is all
over this amazing world. A lot of people when they
think of Viking, you automatically think of what river cruise is, right.

(01:15):
I mean you can essentially say that Viking put river
cruising on the map here in North America, and that
was about twenty it is, it was about twenty seven
years ago. Now, what we did is we decided that
you know that that stipulation, that stigma that comes along
with cruising. What do you think of? Big ships, kids casinos,
multiple restaurants and bars, water slides, kids clubs, big Broadway shows. Right,

(01:39):
that's what we think of, which is a little too
much for it can be, it can be, And some
of those ships they can be up to seventy six
hundred passengers. I think that is the largest ship that's
floating out there right now. So here, folks, today, I'm
so excited. Johnny pulled me aside to ask me to
come speak with you all because today I want to
talk to you about something that's a completely different type
of cruising concept. We like to say here at Viking,

(02:01):
we've reinvented cruising. So the first thing I want to
bring to your attention is that everything we do at
Viking is small ships.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Okay, So when you say small ships.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Oh yeah, are you ready? Okay? Are you ready? The
river ships? One hundred and ninety passengers? Can you believe that?
One hundred ninety passengers? So think about that, Johnny. This
is not a ship. I want you to think of
this as a floating boutique hotel. And the beauty of
taking this floating boutique hotel on these rivers is that
you can be in a new port every day. Now,

(02:31):
this could be a new city, right or are you
ready for this? It could be a new country. So
you can essentially see, in one sailing three four five
different countries, you wake up in a new port and
you're not just waking up in that port. You're not
tendering into a port. You were docked right in the
heart of these small German Austrian villages. You have the

(02:53):
ability to go right off of the ship and walk
into the heart of these cities. So imagine that.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Before we talk about some of the things that you
can experience off boat, tell us what is the experience
on the boat becauay, because my neighbor went on a
Viking cruise and she absolutely loved the dining experience.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yes, okay. And so also just to quickly note here
we have the river ships at one hundred and ninety passengers.
We also have our Viking ocean cruises where we sail
the Mediterranean Sea, we go up the coasts of any
of these European countries. We're in Scandinavia, in the Baltic,
up the norwegiancy. Guess how many passengers the ocean ships

(03:32):
are just.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Guess, I'm gonna say two thousand, nine hundred and thirty passengers.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Okay, so just under one thousand passengers. Again, totally different
from what else is out there when we think of
traditional cruising. Right, So again these small ships. So what
happens is if you're on a river cruise, this is
super small. This is one hundred and ninety passengers.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Right.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
The ship has what we call the heart of the vessel,
and that is the lounge. And in the lounge you
have your Viking bar, you have a wonderful piano player
who's singing, a dance floor and all this little intimate seating.
So this is where all of the passengers gather before
dinner for say a port talk or before dinner drink.
Then we move into the dining room. We have dining.

(04:18):
It's open seating, so you eat dinner together, small tables
from two, four, six, eight, so you can choose the
way you want to die. It's not a signed seating
or anything like that. Then we go back to the
heart of the vessel, the lounge, and we do so
many fun things in the evening. We'll bring destination performers
on board, so you're getting that regional experience. We also

(04:39):
do language lessons, cooking demonstrations, dancing, trivia nights where all
the passengers will create their own trivia teams, and there's
quite a little competition that goes on. So there's a
lot of things happening on board. It's by no means boring.
And I'd also also like to note to your listeners
is that it's really important to have good mobility when

(04:59):
you're on these rivercres because remember, you're going into these small,
authentic European ports, cobblestone streets you know you want, and
you're walking these cities. You're going into the churches, you're
going into fantastic museums. You're maybe going to a brew
house or on a winery experience. So I encourage you
this is a trip you do want to do too

(05:19):
when you're younger. Some people have a stigma that river
cruising is for people that are, you know, kind of
done with traveling and they just want this like super
low key experience. Well that's not the case, So I
inspire you all to put river cruising on your wish lists.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
But the one thing that attracts me to that kind
of concept is that I want to see the world.
I want to see a number of different countries. I
want to experience different cultures. But I'm not ready to
go by myself exactly. So that's a beautiful thing.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
You literally get on your flight to Europe, you land
and there's the Viking representative. They're waiting for you. Now
you're going from there to the ship. You get on
board the ship and every day included on your Viking
cruise is a sure excursion. So that's included in the price.
So you'll go out with a local tour guide. They're
gonna tell you all about the history of that port.

(06:07):
They're gonna show you the cathedrals, you're gonna give you
that history. So as a matter of fact, Johnny, we're
often referred to as the thinking person's cruise. And when
you think about it, the one thing that we don't
have on board any Viking ship, whether it's ocean or
river or expedition cruises, we don't have casinos. We purposely
do not put carsinos on our ships because we want
you import exploring you're in these amazing ports. We don't

(06:29):
want you gambling on our ships. We don't want all
those bells.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
And you.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Can do that, or you could do one of the
seventy six hundred passenger ships and there's nothing wrong with that,
and those are really great for the Caribbean as well.
But when you're in Europe, wouldn't you like that real floating, boutique,
intimate experience where you have that ability to go and
explore these ports on your own or always do everything
with the Viking cruise director as well as with the

(06:56):
tour guides that are on shore and import and you'll
learn all about their history and their culture. So think
cultural immersion. We also include on our ships all the
regional wine and regional cuisine, so you're getting the region's
culinary experience on board too, so you don't even compromise that.
And again that newport every day is great. Now with
Ocean the ships are nine hundred and thirty passengers, so

(07:19):
they're a little larger. And there we do have entertainment,
so we have a beautiful theater. We have tours Haven,
which to me reminds me of like a great little
speakeasy with our Viking band doing all like great singing
and everybody's dancing and having a great time. We also
have a historian on board, so there's that thinking person's
cruise concept coming in where every day you're learning all

(07:40):
about like ancient civilization in Rome. And so it's a
great concept. I think you'd really love it, Johnny. I
think you've evolved to this small ship cruising experience.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Well, yeah, like I said, I'm very familiar with the Caribbean,
but I'm not very familiar with Europe. So where do
I start? How do I?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Okay? Perfect? Great, that's a great question. On a river cruise,
which is really what I inspire you all to think
about doing the Rhine River or the Danube River. They're
equally the most popular rivers. Everybody starts to the Rhine
goes from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, and you'll see again
seven nights, a newport every day. But you can spend
extra time on land in Amsterdam or in Lucerne, Switzerland,

(08:20):
or Lake Como, Azurich because you have those ports on
the front and the back end. Now we do everything.
We'll handle your air for you alongside of our TRIAA partners.
We'll also handle a lot of things for you. You could
do all the transfers, so you really don't have to
worry about anything, right, which is lovely.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
We could just have fun.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
You could just have fun. By the way, I think
I forgot to tell you something that's really important about Viking. Okay,
are you ready for to have that little mind explosion
right now? Ready? I'm right, Are you ready?

Speaker 1 (08:47):
I'm ready?

Speaker 2 (08:48):
No children, Okay, if you all could see Johnny's face
right now, I think you would all be laughing.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
It goes without me.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
This is a cruise for the empty nester, early retirement
or in retirement. We we love it, and you know
what I tell you what. Also, honeymooners love these river
cruises because they have that like ability to got and
out the fort. Oh geez. Now we got an empty
nester and a honeymooner. I think I think Johnny Sold.
I've think Johnny Sold. But yeah, but anyway, people love that.

(09:19):
And on the ocean ships as well, and we have
expedition ships folks under four hundred passengers. They go to
Antarctica so you can walk with the penguins or the
Arctics so you can hang out with the polar bears.
I heard they're pretty nasty, so don't get too close.
And then we also have those ships going to the
Great Lakes, so if you want to stay closer to home,
really you know them, and I know a lot of
your your listeners are probably from this area. I'm thinking maybe.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
So because by the way, as you all know, I'm
sitting here in Pittsburgh, so you have easy access to
the Great Lakes on Viking and the Viking Mississippi, so
if you want to do Mississippi River you can do
that too. You didn't realize all small ships, no kids,
and no casinos.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Okay, so when you go down to the Mississippi, do
you portrait? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (10:01):
So again, you know, you can go round trip New Orleans.
But I love in particular Memphis to New Orleans. Or
New Orleans and Memphis, so you could do pre impost extensions.
So when you book a cruise, if it's on Viking
or anyone else, you always want to do these pre
impost extensions because that's when you can spend a little
extra time on land. So bigger cities like Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, Budapest,

(10:23):
I mean, come on, you don't want to just float
in there and then have to get on an airplane.
I know, Johnny sold, well, I'm sold.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
But the problem is, I cannot tell you there's a problem.
Do I go Europe or do I go to the Mississippi?
Is that I would love to go to Memphis and
I would love to go to New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
I know that is a problem for you, and I
can't answer that. But I will tell you this, if
you want my honest opinion, you're you're lively. You just
got engaged romantic Europe. You know the Rhinds known for
its rivers and its castles and cathedrals. Can you imagine
it's so lovely you'll love it. And we got to
get you out of fun and sun I need to

(10:59):
get out of business. That's it's ah. In the southern
part of the Mississippi.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
But anyhow, Okay, So if people can't obviously they can
come to the travel showcase and get all the information
from you. But if they were, if they're not able
to where do they go? Do you have a website?

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Yes, so we do have a website, Viking dot com.
Do your research there if you want to do a
little research. But I do always love encouraging folks to
go through their travel Advisor. Why they're experts. They give
you expert guidance, they save you time and money, and
they always have our best pricing. So always do that.
And I think all of Johnny's listeners should convince everybody.
Shannon here would like you to write in and say, Johnny,

(11:36):
we want to take a river cruise with you. Will
you host us?

Speaker 1 (11:39):
And there you go.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Johnny's listeners, all of you out there, you can go
with him and get him out of the Caribbean. You
can beat the people that branch him into Europe. Because
Johnny cannot go to the Caribbean islands anymore. It's time
for him to go see the world that we live in.
So everybody go tell Johnny you when to sail on
a river cruise with them? And he'll host you.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Oh I got a tiger by the table on this one,
Shannon from Viking, thank you so much, good luck this week.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Bye bye,
