this week's episode of I Hate Crime. This is episode fifty four was an
original radio broadcast date of nineteen fiftyI Hate Rimes. One of the nicest
(01:49):
bots in town is the corner ofMartin Place in George Street, right at
the GPO. It's where most ofSydney's dames go by on the morning.
I'm telling you about. I wasstanding there watching the procession, and I
was having a wonderful time comparing onewith the other when something ride out of
(02:14):
a satin line box walked up tome. Mister Kent, Yeah, how
did you know my name? Nevermind about that, I've heard you a
gentleman. Oh you haven't met someof the people I know. Please,
I'm in trouble. Pretend you're anold friend. Smile. Sure, somebody
(02:36):
telling you, I mean somebody followhim? Yes, I mean okay,
Say, did you ever hear theone about the Armenian, the Scotchman and
the Yank. Yes, it's reallyvery funny, isn't it. How do
you like that? I don't evencrack the gag and chee lamps. They
come around some time when I'm inreally good form. Is he still around?
(03:00):
Yes, don't look. Yes,it's really very funny. Sure you
want to get out of here,I'd appreciate it. Okay, let's take
a cab. So we took acab and I never did get a look
at the guy following Moira. Yep, that was a name, Moira.
(03:23):
Moira was all in blue, bluehat, blue suit, blue eyes.
I wasn't surprised that a guy wasfollowing it. One look at that silhouette,
and any guy who was healthy wouldlike to form a one man occupation
army. I told the cab driverto go to Bondai, just in case
(03:46):
anybody heard me give the directions. Then I made him detail back to town
and stop at the lower end ofGeorge Street, near a certain little coffee
shop. Thank you very much, mister Kent. I don't mention it.
How about a cump of something?Huh no, thank you. Oh but
we've only begun to get acquainted.I'm sorry, I must go. But
(04:10):
wherever it is you're going, won'tyou let me take you? You've done
enough already. Well, I'm I'ma glutton for punishment. Goodbye, mister
Kent. And there I was standingon the sidewalk looking at the disappearing view
of the nicest thirteen thousand square inchesof woman you've ever seen. But I'm
(04:33):
philosophical about things like that. Besides, I had a hunch i'd be meeting
Moira again. Three hours later,my hunch came good. Arry Kent,
(04:54):
Private Investigation, Maurice Stanton, youmet me at the GBO this morning.
Yeah, I've been thinking about youseriously, very seriously, I'd like to
see you, mister Kent. Youjust named the time and the place.
I'll be there my flat, justas soon as you can get here.
(05:14):
I didn't waste any time. Igot her address, hung up, took
the lift gun into my car, broke three traffic regulations and were standing at
her door. In five minutes. She was waiting for me. Come in,
mister Kent. Thanks. I tooka look around. Nicely furnished apartment,
(05:35):
good pictures, good books, goodscotch, too much soudan ah,
just right, here's to you,Moira. You're very good healths place you've
(06:00):
got here, it's comfortable. Mindif I turn on? Was no The
stage was being set for something softmusic, a filmy sort of lounging robe,
the Scotch dim lights, and ofcourse Moira. I figured i'd find
(06:26):
out whether I was supposed to bea leading man or something else. So
I moved over on the lounge.I'm very grateful for what you did this
morning. Forget it, I i'dlike to repay you, mister Kent.
(06:51):
Why be so formal? People whowere close to me called me Larry.
It seems that we are very close. Yeah, closer all the time,
mister Kent, I stopped talking.Mm hm. Why didn't you do that?
(07:23):
Because I eat my breakfast food, and because I figured I'd take advantage
of the situation before I told thatguy to come out from behind the curtain.
Come on out with your hands inthe air. That's a good boy.
(07:44):
What's your buddy's name, Moira,I'll tell you Dennis all and a
very nice name. It is tooturn around. What are you going to
do? Protect myself to save youany trouble. The gun isn't my right
pocket m forty five? Did youintend to use it on me? It
(08:07):
would have been in my hand ifI had, you could have had your
hand in your pocket. All right, what's it all about? We wanted
you to help us by posing asa target. Dennis wasn't going to shoot
you. He stayed there to thisnew our conversation. I didn't think you'd
kiss me. You left yourself wideopen for it. But suppose I hadn't
(08:30):
kissed you, then I would haveasked your assistance in what capacity? We
need someone we can trust. I'dsay, you don't trust anybody? We
have to be very careful. Doyou trust me. Now, Dennis,
I think, Simard, So whathappens? I give you back your gun,
(08:52):
relax, and then wait for someoneto plug me. Oh no,
thanks, mister Kinney. Now Idon't like to set up sweetheart. I
don't know what the score is,and I'm not interested in finding out,
so I'll just keep the forty five, walked backwards and say good night.
Please listen to me, mister Kent. I didn't listen. It looked too
(09:16):
much of like a frame job.So I hit the road. When a
dame hides a guy with a fortyfive behind a living room curtains, I'd
rather be sitting in a movie. That's just what I did. I went
to a newsreel. Then I visitedthe office, looked at some bills,
and went home for a shower. After that, I sat down with my
(09:39):
address book. Who is it Moira? I put away my address book,
felt for my thirty two minutes holsterin case Moira had an escort, and
then I went to the door.Mister Kent, mister Kent, why the
(10:07):
excitement come in? He had tosee you. She was wearing a light
coat that she hadn't bothered. Abutton underneath was the same filmy thing she'd
been wearing at her apartment. Shemust have left in a hurry. You
must help me, mister Kent. Why it's Dennis. What did he do?
He's dead? When a half hourago? How did it happen?
(10:30):
Someone shot him? Keep talking? After you left, Dennis and I talked
things over. Finally we decided tocome to you and ask for help,
with or without a gun. Misterkin please, okay, go on.
I thought it would be best ifwe saw you here in your flat,
so we waited till six thirty. Then I went into my bedroom to get
some clothes. No, sooner didI leave Dennis than someone came in through
(10:56):
the front door and shot him.Why because of the money? Money,
Moira. If I'm going to helpyou, I've got to know everything,
Okay, I intend to tell youeverything. Good. Who was Damnis my
brother? Oh? What about themoney? It belonged to my father?
He died three months ago. Didhe give it to you? Yes?
(11:18):
Well then it's yours, isn't it? So why come to a private detective
for help? The police force willgive you all the protection you need.
I can't go to the police. Why not? You see? Dad left
a will making my foster mother executorof his entire estate, and he changed
(11:43):
his mind at the last minute. His mind was changed three years ago and
he found out what Angeline was.Angeline Angeline Whitey. I could never force
myself to call her mother. Ohyou didn't get along, huh? No,
I tried. It wasn't difficult tosee that she married dead only for
(12:05):
his money, Moira. Why didn'the make out a new will? He
couldn't when he found out about Angeline. That that into business worries led to
a nervous breakdown. He spent thelast years of his life in an asylum
mentally unfit. Yes, Angeline couldn'tget him there quickly enough, but he
(12:28):
had his clear moments. The firsttime he hid thirty thousand pounds, and
the second time he told Dennis andI wear it hidden it I see.
Does your foster mother know about him? She's probably kissed. Have you seen
him lately? Not since since deadwas buried. Come on, kid,
(12:54):
we're going back to your apartment.Moira was all shaken up. I had
to help her climb the stairs.Any other time it would have been a
very nice job, but the bodyof her brother was in the apartment.
(13:20):
I don't know even now what Iintended doing, but I wanted to look
around first. The lights were on. Dennis was stretched on the carpet and
a committee was waiting for us.Come in, birds of you. Well,
(13:41):
hello, inspector, take a chair. Moira, are you Moyer Stanton?
Yes? How did it happen? She told him. Then the inspector
looked at me. Where do youcome into it? Out, I told
(14:01):
him, But neither Moira or Imentioned the money. Inspector. Daniel scratched
his nose, shook his head, and put a match to the end of
his cigar. Then he got downto the business of really asking questions,
and Moira told him something she hadn'tmentioned to me. Last week, an
attempt was made to kidnap Dennis bywho two men He didn't recognize him.
(14:26):
They tried to force him into theircar, but he struggled A minister run
away. Why wasn't it reported tothe police. We should have reported it,
I spout, that's all right,no one ever cooperates with us.
Inspectory. You're going to keep thisgirl up all night. She's had an
awful shock. Yeah, I'll getin touch with you tomorrow. Miss Denton,
(14:50):
thank you. I I couldn't stayhere. My landlady has a spare
room in her apartment. Alphoner, thank even landladies have hearts. Mine said
okay, and then she added thatshe'd put it on my rent bill.
(15:11):
Moira picked up some clothes and Itook her with me. We said good
night at the door. You're puttinga lot of faith and trust in me.
I don't think I'm taking a chance. Should we have told the police
about the money we should have, and we will, but first we'll wait
(15:33):
for somebody to make a move.Thirty thousand quid is a lot of potatoes,
and there were undoubtedly some characters intown itching to dig it up.
(15:54):
In the morning, there was acall from Inspector Daniels. He wanted to
ask Moira some quis Again. Idrove her to headquarters and recommended the chiefs
stall and played dumb. That wasn'texactly cooperating with the boys in blue,
but well, they don't always usetheir imagination. I went to my office
(16:15):
and sat there for an hour orso, and then good morning. Two
characters walked in. They were welldressed and smiling. The more talkative one
of the two made the introductions. My name is Tom Ellis and this is
my partner, Barb Ellum. Hello. What can I do for you?
(16:38):
Gentlemen? You take cases the policewon't handle, don't you sometimes? But
it's according to why the cops won'ttouch the case. Oh there's nothing legal
about this, you see? Hestarted talking. It was a good story.
Ellis and Allen were supposed to bebusiness partners. It seemed that one
(17:00):
of their employees was typing on thecash register and they wanted to catch him
without any police action. I listened. The guy was such a good talker
that I was completely taken in.If we find that the man we suspect
is guilty, we will discharge himand let it go at that. See
m h. I got out ofmy chair and walked to the window.
(17:26):
It was a big mistake. Takeit easy, okay. Bob, which
isn't my friend's real name, bythe way, was once the champion weightlifter
Kent, and he wasn't kidding.I couldn't move my arms. See,
(17:47):
it doesn't pay to struggle. Whatdo you want the thirty thousand pounds outside
of a bank? I've never seenany thousand. The girl came to you.
She either gave it to you ortold you where it is. Moira,
(18:07):
you know I mean Mora. Shenever told me about any thirty thousand
pounds. Hold him very still,Bob, I got him. Ah,
where is it? You're wasting yourtime? What did she do with the
(18:33):
money? How many times do Ihave to tell you that? I let
go his arm as the door?Okay, I didn't know you were busy.
Wow, come right in, Inspector, Yes, come in, we
were just leaving. Don't let themout, Inspector. What they're stand over
men? Stand over men? That'sall that's about. Kent here is a
(18:59):
very bad loser, Inspector. Hedoesn't like to play his poker dds.
Don't listen to them, Inspector. It's two against one. Kent search as
if you like. Inspector Daniels acceptedthe invitation. They didn't have anything on
them that even resembled a weapon.Smart boys. I had to stand there
(19:19):
and watch them leave stale. Iwas very glad the inspector walked in.
When he did. I could almosthear the wheels churning in his brain.
If if this stand over men,why are they here? They had an
idea that I could give them someinformation on what on some racetrack deal?
(19:45):
Why did you come here? BecauseI'm not satisfied that you've told me all
you know about that murder case.Everybody I meet this morning thinks I'm holding
back information. It wouldn't be thefirst time, No, but one of
these days, Kent, it'll bethe last time. I remember that.
(20:17):
After exchanging a few more pleasantries withmy old buddy, I drove the headquarters
where I'd told Moire to wait forme. Then I took it a lunch
and for a ride in the country. Why this, Larry, It's obvious
I want to talk about the money, of course. Uh huh? Say
(20:41):
you called me by my first name? Did I? Yeah? But we'll
get on to that later. Rightnow, let's talk, all right?
Where did you put the money inmy safe deposit box at the bank?
As your mother complained about thirty thousandmissing from your father's estate. But I'm
(21:04):
sure she knows it's missing from whatI can make out. She's not the
tight to let thirty grin slip away. It's one thing I can't understand.
I can't marry. Yeah, Ithink a car is following us. I'm
sure I noticed it just behind aswe left the city, so did I,
(21:25):
sweetheart, keep looking ahead, Marry, hold onto your hat, Mora,
what are you going to do?I'm going to see if this thing
can hit eighty. Ah. They'reincreasing speed too, seventy seventy five If
I remember right, there's a dirtroad on the left ahead somewhere. Yeah,
we're coming to it now. Getready for it, Mora. If
they're not, they'll never make it. Here go. They almost made it,
(22:03):
but not quite. Their car turnedover about three times. Two men
were inside. I pulled him out. They were the guys who had visited
my office. One was dead, the other, who'd call himself Ellis,
was very close to it. Amotorcycle cop arrived in an ambulance. Moira
and I ended up at police headquarters, where we told Inspector Daniel's the whole
(22:26):
story. He made the usual remarks, if I want to Kent, I
can get you fohold the information thatat least two other accounts. But before
he could go any further, InspectorDaniel speaking, Yes, Murphy, what
(22:55):
I see He didn't eh mhm mthanks Murphy. Wow, Miss Stanton,
it looks as though you'll eventually getto keep that thirty thousand pounds. What
(23:18):
happened? Did Ellis talk, Inspector, Yes, just before he died.
But his name wasn't Ellis. Itwas John Cartwright. Cartwright dad mentioned that
name. It seems that he waswell, very friendly with your foster mother,
(23:41):
so friendly that he was willing tokill for him and for thirty thousand
pounds. But where did the otherguy come into it? He was just
a small time hoodlum hired by Cartwright. Uh, where do you go from
here, Inspector? Well, mynext move is Angela and Stanton and laurynch
for a world right now. ButAngeline's Stanton wasn't available when the cops arrived
(24:06):
at her place. She must havebeen psychic. Moira turned the thirty thousand
pounds over to the authorities and wastold she'd get it back in a short
while. And me, well,I stayed close to Moira, first because
I liked her, second, becauseher foster mother hadn't been caught. We
(24:27):
wondered where she was. But onenight in Moira's apartment we stopped wondering.
Don't move, don't move, Wedidn't. She had a gun in her
hand, her dress was filthy,Her hair hung lankly over her face.
Her eyes blazed and yes, surprisedto see me. Alcho, what do
(24:55):
you want? How do you thinkI want the money? I've given it
to the authority. I want themmoney, Moira. Before your father died,
he ranted and raved, he laughedat me. He said that you
and Dennis had the money in thatI'd never see it. Well, now
Dennis will never see it. Iwant the money. I want the money,
(25:18):
get it for it. Who areyou? That doesn't matter. Go
to the desk drawer and get themoney, Moira. Yes, and remember
that I have a gun. WhenI said desk drawer, Moira understood there
was a thirty two in it,a gun I'd placed there for her protection.
Angeline kept looking at me, watchingmy every move. I relaxed my
(25:42):
arm, keep your hands up,sure, no fix whoever you are.
She concentrated on me, pointed thegun in my direction. Meanwhile, Moira
was at the desk. She pulledout the drawer. Then she had the
gun in her hand Handeline. Angelineswung a gun towards I saw that just
as I died for Alex, shotsgrows wild as she was let me go
(26:07):
on, let me, but herkilling days were over. We tied her
up. The cops came and tookher away, and she ended up in
a straight jacket. She'll spend therest of her life in a room with
padded walls, first talking quietly andthen screaming, but always about thirty thousand
(26:33):
pounds. But Moira, now there'sa dame who's going to enjoy her money.
I want you to help me spendsome of it. Mary, Sure,
what will we do? You tellme, well, we can go
somewhere for an instance. Well, too too, word to where? And
(27:03):
what can we do? You havesomething? The things I thought of that
we could do didn't cust a penny, Good night, welcome back, so
(27:26):
they said. Another scene at theGPO building in Sydney. It makes me
wonder whether it was very common forpeople to hang out there in nineteen fifty
or whether they're just touting this beinga locally made program from local scraps.
(27:48):
The name Moira is actually the facedon the Irish name that is the equivalent
of Mary. I'm not certain howpopular a name that is in Australia,
but it's pretty distinctive and certainly notone we've heard elsewhere in old time radio.
Larry Kent's descriptions continue to be amazingin all the wrong ways. One
(28:15):
thing I really found myself wondering aboutwas his description of her as thirteen thousand
square inches. I thought that thiswas like some scientific fact for the square
inches of a human being, butI checked, and apparently everything I can
(28:37):
find says that the skin area ofa human being is four thousand, eight
hundred inches on average. Obviously, you know, vary from person to person,
so I'm wondering where the writers gotthirteen thousand. This story does have
a habit of telling us things thatwe don't necessarily care all that much about,
(28:59):
Like when Larry put down his blackbook before someone entered. I mean,
I was anyone sitting there wondering, okay, but what's going to happen
to his black book? And thenyou had the criminal mentioned that the name
of his muscle is not Bob,even though he was calling him Bob.
And that's one of those lines youexpect to pay off somehow, like byas
(29:23):
learning his actual name. But no, we don't just stated that he's essentially
an average hood. It's not evenstated that he's an average hood. Whose
name is not Bob at any rightthough, we turned to lessener comments and
feedback, and we have a commentfrom I Lean regarding the episode nineteen.
(29:49):
I'd love to hear a fingerprints stickto shell kating desees you have to push
the bullets into the clip or intothe chamber of the revolver. And I've
often wondered if the call just don'tmention that as evidence to keep catching crooks,
that they just say fingerprints were foundon the gun. I hope an
expert does weigh in on your question, Adam, Well, thanks so much,
(30:11):
Aileen. Of course this was fromYouTube, which is around four weeks
behind the podcast at this point, and I've not heard anything, but since
Eileen was interested in the question,I'm just re upping it for any firearms
expert, and if you're not afirearms expert, if you could explain the
(30:32):
whole thirteen thousand square inches thing,I love that too. Now it is
time to thank our Patreon supporter ofthe day. Thank you to Christine,

Here is the sill on the thirdfloor where Surnson is imprisoned. On the
(31:37):
floor directly below is the courtroom wherehis trial is being hit. Yeah,
and here's the nearest outside door onthe ground floor below the courtroom. Yes,
at five o'clock this afternoon, therewill be a truck outside the door,
but it can only stay there forthree minutes. The trial will continue
on afternoon. If you and Serrensoncan get to that door a round five,
you can make your escape in thatwell. You've told me how to
(32:00):
get out of the place, butyou've admitted a couple of small details like
how am I going to get intothe place and how am I going to
