Welcome back, second hour of theGreg Best Show with Christopher Kidd here in
ninety three point three KJRFM. I'ma happy, warm sunny Friday across the
Pacific Northwest. We're gonna have JimBoden, a former general manager in Major
League Baseball for sixteen years now ananalyst for MLB on CBS, for the
Athletic and in SiriusXM. He's goingto join us in a couple of minutes

(00:28):
to talk about a bat, abig bat the Mariners might be able to
get in a trade and sure coulduse. That's following headlines brought to you
by Venue Kings dot Com. ThoseMariners, well, they limped out of
Minnesota in their road trip, gotsmacked eleven one yesterday by the Twins first
series and seven the Seattle Maritors didnot win, lost three at four to

(00:50):
the Twins. MS Headers struck outfifteen more times yesterday, struck out fifty
three times in four games against theTwins. Dams are just so relying on
their starting pitching right now, butyesterday, Logan Gilbert is league leading one
point six nine ERA allowed nine hitsin eight runs in four innings. Tonight,
the Mariners come home to play theAs started a three game weekend series

(01:11):
at the Yard, and Soto BrianWu returns from the injury list. He'll
start the series opening tonight. RiceMiller starts tomorrow night Luis Castillo On Sunday
afternoon, the Seahawks continue offseason workoutswith veterans at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
Phase two of the NFL's offseason schedule. Organized team activity practices begin May
twentieth. The NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. Last night, the Rangers won in

(01:34):
overtime at Carolina to take a threeto zero series, leading that best of
seven. The Stars beat Colorado inDallas last night to even that series at
a game apiece. Tonight, Florida'sat Boston in game three of a one
to one series. The Canucks hostEdmonton in Vancouver of Game two of that
Western Conference semifinal. That series isone oh Canucks NBA Playoffs. Dallas beat

(01:55):
that team. We're not going tomention beyond twenty nine points, ten rebounds,
seven assists from Luca Dancis, whowas hobbling around injured. Best of
seven series there is tied at agame apiece and headed to Dallas Cleveland.
They surprised the Celtics in Boston. It looked like they were gonna get swept
out of that series. Instead,it's one to one because Cleveland beat Boston
by twenty four last night. Thatseries now heads to Ohio tonight. New

(02:16):
York's at Indiana Knicks are up twogames and none of that best of seven.
The defending champion Denver Nuggets are onthe ropes, down two to oh
heading tonight to Minnesota to play theTimberwolves in Game three. In the late
game tonight, trying to avoid beingdown three to zero. Gonzaga and UCLA
are going to play two games thenext two men's college basketball season. CBS

(02:37):
Sports reported first game is gonna bethis fault, the new arena the Los
Angeles Clippers are going to build inInglewood, California. The second one Gonzaga
Ucla game is going to be inClimate Pledge Arena here in Seattle. In
twenty five and twenty six. Ifwe hadn't heard President Biden's landing at SeaTac
Airport between five and six o'clock tonighton Air Force one, that means that
I five is going to be closedwhen the motorcade comes through on a Friday

(03:00):
afternoon traffic jam. Of traffic jams, I'm sure the Mariners we mentioned could
use a bat or three. Ournext guest thinks that the Mariners could possibly
get one, maybe from the NewYork Mets and a guy you've heard of
just at the All Star Game inSeattle here last summer. Jim Bowden,
former Major League Baseball general manager forsixteen years now an MLB analyst for CBS.

(03:23):
Could read him at the Athletic hearhim on sirius XM satellite radio.
He joined us on the Beacon PlumbingHotline on ninety three point three k FM.
Sir, thanks for joining us.And I have to ask right off
the top of the Regis story oftrade, you'd like to see how plausible
is a Pete Alonso for Emerson HancockMets Mariners trade. Yeah. I think

(03:45):
it really depends on how the Metsplay between now and the end of July,
and it depends on the appetite ofMariners ownership that they're willing to take
on salary and if they're willing totrade some top prospects to make it work.
But I think the messages that's clearis that the Mariners have the best
starting pitching one to five or oneto six in baseball. They have a

(04:09):
strong bullpen, and so they havea pitching staff that if they can win
the division or getting as a wildcard berth, they'll have as good a
chance of any team of running thetable and maybe bringing a World championship there.
But they're not going to be ableto do it with this lineup.
And so either they need to tradefor a big bat star like Pete a
Lonzo the Mets or Vladimir Guerrero Juniorof the Blue Jays, or they're going

(04:31):
to apt to add two or threemore hitters that put the ball in play,
that can hit good pitching. Andso there's work to be done by
the front office between now and theJuly thirtieth trade deadline, Jim, from
those you talk to around Major LeagueBaseball, what's the perception of Jerry Depoto
in the regime here about doing whatyou're proposing of basically renting an expensive veteran

(04:57):
player at the end of his contractto bolster a lineup, but giving up
a top prospect to do it.If Mariners haven't done it under to Poto,
they usually collect those and don't givethem away. What's the perception of
baseball of whether Seattle would even dothis, Well, I can tell you
the perception of baseball is different thanthe way the Mariners respond to it.
You know, the perspective of baseballat the Winter meetings. And I was

(05:19):
at the Winter meetings talking to allof the gms and executives in the game,
and everybody felt the same way thatSeattle had the pitching and if they
could get aggressive, go out andsign a Cody bellingcher, be aggressive,
try to bring in the show EOTommy, which they didn't even play on,
that if they were able to addoffense to this team, they could
win a World Series. And Ithink there's a lot of disappointment in the

(05:40):
industry that the Mariners. Now JerryDepoto in the front office certainly took the
hit that they defended and didn't sayit was ownership, but it's very very
clear that ownership was worried about therevenue stream. They're worried about the television
deal and streaming rights and all thosekinds of things, and they felt,
you know, financially tight, butthe and baseball is you only get a

(06:01):
window to win, that's usually threeto four years, and it's a small
window and you have to take advantageof the window and make the moves.
Then, just like the Baltimore Oriialsdid trading for Corbyn Burns, right,
they have the lineup, they're readyto win, but they needed another starting
pitcher if they wanted to sit thereand have a legitimate shot out of a
world championship. So when they tradedfor Burns, then all of a sudden,

(06:24):
that completely changed where Baltimore can go. And you look at Seattle and
it was just a perplexing It wasa perplexing offseason because they traded the power
of Taoscarrnandez and you Hango Suarez, but they didn't replace them with guys that
put the ball in play more orwould move to change or create traffic.

(06:44):
They brought in more guys that just, you know, that strike out too
much. So you have a lineupthat has struck out more times than all
other twenty nine teams in baseball. That's just a fact. It is and
everybody and everybody should have seen thiscoming. And your best player, Julio
Rodriguez has one home run, elevenRBI. He's and part of the reason
for that isn't just because he's offto a slow start like last year,

(07:06):
but part of it because why wouldI pitch to him. I mean,
I don't want to pitch to him, like I'm not gonna get Hi anything
to hit, and he's not gettinghit, so he'll start swinging the bad
pitches right, and so I couldtake him out because no one else scares
me. Sure, you're going toget some power from Hanneger, You're gonna
get some power from cal Raddley Garveragainst left handed pitching. But for the

(07:30):
most part, you've got outs upand down the lineup. And as much
as we saw some hitters in thelineup we like, like ty Frantz,
he's never done it. Sure theapproach looks like he should hit and for
power, but he hasn't. Andat some point potential has to turn into
production or it's just potential. Andso you look up and down the lineup,
it doesn't scare you. And soI think that there's plenty of time

(07:55):
to make either a big trade toget a guy to hit forty home runs
like Peter A Lonso could do andjust score more runs that way, or
you know, just try to upgradethe lineup in two or three different spots
with guys that you know can helpcreate more runs, create more traffic,
create more speed. Like I thoughtLewis Arrise would be a perfect pickup for

(08:15):
Seattle. San Diego ended up tradingfor him, But that would have been
a perfect guy at the top ofthe lineup ahead of Rodriguez, who's going
to be on base all the time. And then when Rodriguez gets going and
starts hitting his thirty home runs, instead of solo shots, there'll be two
run shots right right. So it'sthat kind of thing that they have to
do. They've got time, They'vegot eighty days between now and the deadline.

(08:35):
They've got time. But this isshowtime. This is when you got
to step up. But by theway, it's not just the front office
that has to step up, it'sownership. Ownership has to step up and
say it's okay to spend money,it's okay to trade our top prospects,
because you have to recognize the windowto win in Seattle is right here,
right now today. Jim Bowden, former major league general managers sixteen years now

(08:58):
in MLB. Analysts can see himon CBS read him on the Athletic here
him on Sirius XM, and you'rehearing him right now on ninety three point
three KDJRFM. Jim, you mentionedthe writing was on the wall regarding the
manners offense and the struggles. Howdidn't the mayor's organization see that or why
didn't they see it that way?Why did they feel that the moves that
they made would put them in positionto compete per se? I don't know.

(09:22):
I mean, if I had toguess, I'd say it's probably the
analytic department, right that probably tookup, looked at all the numbers and
said, well, look, rarely, we'll do this, and Garver will
do this, and if we takeout the strikeouts of ti Oscar and Suarez,
then this will happen. I don'tknow. You know, a lot
of the pickups that they had wereplayers that were in specific roles, right

(09:46):
Like Mitch Garver with Texas was platuningwith Robbie Grossman and was put in a
lineup around Seeger Simeon and o'dole's Garcia. So Garver was put in a position
where he's only facing pictures he canhit, and he was put between hitters
that they're going They're going to giveGarber pitches to hit, not the people
around them. So that's not goingto translate when you go to Seattle.

(10:11):
Luke Raley, same thing. LookI like Lucraley. I like his power,
but it was the way Kevin Cashwas using him and matching him up
that made Luke Raley effective. Now, Jorge Polanco, little different story.
I don't think any of us expectedyou have fifty strikeouts in one hundred and
thirty seven at bats, and Idon't know what that's all about. But
that's not where polanko. He's abetter player than that, and I would
think that he will turn it aroundif you show a little patience. But

(10:35):
Mitch Hanneger agent decline and injuries gotto him. Like I didn't understand why
we thought he was going to rebound, right, I mean, what's he
hitting two thirteen, two ten somethinglike that? Like you know so,
and really, when you look atthis lineup, how many guys right now
in that lineup have it on basepercentage of thirty two percent or better?

(10:56):
I think you only have one guylast time I checked, and that was
Josh for Loss. In the entirelineup like that, just that formula doesn't
work, and instead of crying aboutit, let's go fix it. Right
it's time to fix it. Yougot to call all the teams right now,
like the Rockies, like the Marlins, like the Nationals, like the
White Sox, like the Athletics, like the angel you got. You gotta

(11:20):
pound the phones on those teams thatwe already know will trade with you.
And then you've got to hope that. You know, hey, look,
if Houston doesn't turn around, whichI think they will, you know,
maybe Alex Pregnant becomes available. IfToronto doesn't turn around, maybe Vladimir guro
Jui or Boba Chet become available. If the Mets don't get into it,
Pete A. Lonzo could come available. And it's going to be painful,
but you're gonna have to trade Handcocker, Wu. One of them are gonna

(11:43):
have to go. Just I knowyou want to keep them all, but
you can't keep your four best, all right, keep your four best.
Don't touch the four but you cantouch Hancock and you could touch Wu if
it means improving the offense, nomatter how painful it's gonna be. And
the top prospects in the farm system, it's okay to trade them because this
is your window to win when youhave all this pitching. So this is

(12:07):
tough to even ask. But let'ssay the Mariners think they're smarter than anybody
in this regard and they stick withit. They don't make a big trade,
they don't make a big deal, and it's the same thing that happens
again. They don't make they theymake the playoffs and they're out, or
they don't make it at all. What is next for this organization? Because
how long are they going to sitin this funk and not really make any

(12:28):
moves? Does this mean the organizationtakes a different turn? How would you
view it as a former GM yourself. Well, you have to ask the
owner where the problem is, right? Is he looking in the mirror?
Is that where the problem is?Right? I mean, Jerry Depoto's do
an amazing job building up this pitchingstaff. He's put the pitching staff in
position to win. So I needsomeone needs to tell me if we stop

(12:52):
spending money on hitters, if we'renot evaluating hitters correctly, Like, someone
has to explain to me where theevaluation of hitters has gone wrong and that
particular part of your organization has tobe corrected. So I don't know if
it's the analytic department, I don'tknow, if it's the professional scouting department,

(13:13):
you know, I don't know.I don't know if it's the hitting
room. But that's where you needto figure out where the issue is and
where the problem is and then fixthat problem and start bringing some guys.
Look, when you get to October, let's just say you get there anyway,
right, which is still possible withthis pitching staff. So let's just
say pitching and defense get you there. The problem's gonna be what in the
world are you going to do whenyou're facing the Baltimore lineup or the Yankee

(13:37):
lineup or the Rangers lineup. Whatare you gonna do? And what do
you what do you? What doyou? You know? How are you
gonna outscore them? And then theother question is how are you going to
hit their best pitching? Because ifyou get there, you're gonna be facing
Garrett Cole or you're gonna be facingCorbyn Burn and that's who you got to
beat. This line up here that'snot beating those guys. You're losing five

(13:58):
to two and going home as quickbecause you got there. Jim Bowden form
major league manager, major league generalmanager for sixteen years now in analyst on
CBS the Athletic and serious like I'mjoining us on ninety three point three KGRFM.
In a general sense, Jim,how difficult is it? Well,
I don't want to see that's let'srephrase that. How different is the trade

(14:18):
market when they have the expanded wildcardsand a team like the Mets can say,
well, we're only a couple gamesout of the second wild card?
Does it shrink the pull for aGM to acquire players You mentioned the Rockies
or teams that are obviously out ofit. But how difficult may it be
now for a GM proposed to whenyou were a GM because of the wildcard,

(14:39):
to deal with teams that think theymay be falsely think they're still in
it, still in it and connected. They tell me it's significantly different.
Yeah, it's really hard. Youknow, every single Sunday on my radio
show and I text them all allweek long. There's more trade discussions now
than I think there's ever been inthe history of baseball this early in May.

(15:01):
Okay, so the activity is there, But the problem is the teams
and owners' front office and owners thatthey don't want to tell their fan base
that they're thinking that they're out ofit in May or June. And so
the problem is start break for mostteams to get that decision, and even
then, because of the expanded playoffs, teams are going to think they're too

(15:24):
close and they're not going to move, and so, you know, that
makes it extremely challenging. So allyou can do, you know, like
Toronto, they're seventeen and twenty.I don't think they're going anywhere, but
there are only five games out ofthe Wildcard. They're not going to throw
the towel in, you know. And so the only teams right now that

(15:46):
you know you probably can deal withare Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics,
Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins,Saint Louis Cardinals, and the Rockies.
That's it. Nobody's else is in. Most of the others won't be in
play until after the All Star breakand closer to the thirtieth of July.
So it's really challenging. That's whyaj Preller got so aggressive and made the

(16:11):
trades for Dylan Cees and Lewis arrisebecause he's looked at the landscape and said,
if I don't jump in this nowand quote unquote overpay from my prospect
pool, it's going to be almostimpossible to be able to make the deals
that I need to try to win. And you're saying, in your experience,
that's an ownership call that you're goingto have to have the owner step
in and say, yeah, we'regoing to get rid of No. No,

(16:33):
I didn't say that. Every teamis different. Owners are more involved.
That all depends on the organization. Some owners are heavily involved in the
day to day operations. Some ownersgive the gms the power. I think
the perception of the Mariners organization inthe industry has been that this particular offseason
ownership was not committed to investing moremoney in players in free agency, and

(17:00):
they didn't play on the bats thatthey needed. And so what does a
GM do. They do the bestthey can. You go do what you
can afford to do. You bringin Mitch Garver, you bring in Reiley,
you bring in you know, thesekind of players. But then what
then that's what you are, that'swhat you become. So now you're in
a situation where you know that theplan that you tried to make work,

(17:23):
given how hamstring the front office was, you now know it's not going to
work. It's unlikely to work now. So now as an owner, you've
got to sit there and say, look, I know I didn't want to
invest, but I now realize howgood my pitching staff is, and yes,
I'm going to support bringing in acontract or too, or I'm going

(17:45):
to support you training some of ourtop young talent in the minor leagues.
That's you know, owner's got togive Jerry and Justin the freedom to do
that, and this is the timeyou have to do it. You know
me teams that would love to havethis starting rotation. Yeah, I can
name twenty nine twenty nine teams.Jim at thirty eight games when I was

(18:06):
made a baseball beat writer for thesecondment to be covering the Oakland A's and
the Malder Hudson Zito years early twothousands and generally back then and again it
didn't have the extra wildcards, butgenerally it was a round Memorial Day that
you kind of knew what you were. But you're saying for the Mariners case,
they are what they are In thirtyeight games is enough to show that
this offense isn't turning around. Ohlook, I'm not going to tell you

(18:27):
that I don't believe where A Polancois going to be better, because I
do. I'm not going to tellyou I don't think ty Frantz is going
to be better, because I do. And I'm not telling you I don't
think Julio Rodriguez is going to bea lot better because in all three of
those cases, I do. AndI think if Mitch Garber continues to face
the right hitters, I think youknow he'll get better too. So I'm
not saying you can't get better. But what I'm looking forward to is can

(18:51):
we win the World Series this yearin Seattle? Or can we get there
like Arizona did last year with thisnew playoff format? Even if we get
into the wildcard team, can wedo what Arizona did and get to that
World Series? And I look atthis team and I said, pitching wise,
absolutely, defensively, absolutely offensively,no chance. Jim Bowden formum major

(19:14):
lye general manager of sixty years, just laying it down and those are facts.
Thanks for joining us, Jim,Enjoy your spring weekend. Appreciate the
time you gave us on a Fridayon ninety three point three KGr take care,
thank you, Jim Bowden. Justtell it like it is, Chris.
Yeah, if you're driving around Seattlehere in that and you disagree with
him, you haven't seen the Marinersplay for the last really two years,

(19:37):
but especially this year, striking outso much, he says, And it's
telling as a general manager has beenin the league and talks to general managers,
he says, daily, weekly. He says, what I'm looking at
is can we win a World Seriesnow? And with the pitching they have
the answers yes, With the defensethey have the answers yes. And we've
mentioned this, this is a WorldSeries caliber start pitching staff. But with

(20:00):
the offense that he had what washis word, no way laughable at this
point? Yeah, no way isexactly how he put it. There's no
chance. He says, It's timeis quote was, it's time to fix
it. This is showtime. Thisis when you have to step up.
And its ownership. And that's whyI asked, so what if in this
scenario if they don't, now, what what do you mean? Well,

(20:23):
it's John Stanton, the CEO,John Stanton look in the mirror, Bud,
and he even used the term yeahfor owners to have to look in
the mirror and say, am Ithe problem that I don't want to spend
the money now? In this case, in a trade scenario for Peter Alonzo,
as he proposed, let's say thatmoney outlay is incremental because you're only

(20:44):
getting it from a pro rated partof the rest of this season and then
his contract ends, or if it'svlad Guerrero from Toronto or you have it,
it's it's not the investment you'd bemaking in free agency in November December.
It is a pro rated three monthsof an ending contract. That's a
whole different financial deal. There. Then the question to me becomes not a

(21:07):
financial one, but a prospect organizationalpersonnel one of it. Do you want
to get give the Mets Brian wuor Emerson Hancock and throw in a Ty
France or someone a veteran they couldput in a lineup to replace some of
Alonso's bat right away. That's thequestion, and that becomes justin Hollander and
Jerry Depoto's question to me, andto Boden's point, ownership needs to stay

(21:30):
out of way of that, butas far as the ownership, about the
money thing and looking in the mirrorthat's in the winter and that horse has
left the barn. Now we're talkingabout a roster construction, farm system,
personnel decision on are we finally goingto give up some of these top prospects
Harry Ford a Class A to geta bat to win now? They have

(21:56):
not done it in this regime? Are they going to do it now?
And Jim Bowdens saying, do itnow because this is your window that you're
not going to have this starting Andwe've talked with Larry Stone about how the
fact these pitchers are going to getvery rich very soon in their arbitration years
and you're not going to be ableto have the payroll with the quality of
starting pitching that you have today.Tomorrow, you're not gonna be able to

(22:17):
have it. So his thinking is, yes, you have to give up
a Woo or Emerson Hancock to getwhat you need to fix this offense.
And his point is, don't touchthe four gems of your starters, the
fantastic four as he quoted here, and you give up a wo or a
Hancock to do it. And that'ssomething that they the Mariners have not been
willing to do and that's the rub. Will they do that in the next

(22:38):
eighty days before the trading deadline endson July thirty first. Oh, this
is going to be a busy summerjust with community just talking about it and
what will this team do. It'ssure better than being in Miami or in
Colorado in a baseball fan right now, though, I mean, at least
we're talking about contending and getting aboutto win the World Series. We'll talk
about that more coming up. We'lltalk about your text and what you wrote

(23:00):
in today about my mom in Michiganon the phone for Mother's Day. That
and more coming up on ninety threepoint three KJRFM. Welcome back ninety three
point three KJRFM, Greg Bell, the News Tribune and Christopher Kid with you.
Happy sunny, warm, glorious Fridayand weekend to you across the Pacific
Northwest. While we were talking tomom and Michigan an eighty eight year old

(23:23):
mom and Jim Bowden, the exgeneral manager, who was very frank about
the Mariners need to acquire a batnow and maximize this window now with World
Series caliber pitching. While we're doingthat Seattle University Athletics announced start going back
to the West Coast Conference. Theywere there in nineteen seventy one. They
were joined when they original members Loyaland Marymount Santa Clara un versus San Francisco.

(23:48):
And then when Seattle you got outof Division one sports in nineteen eighty
one, they withdrew from the WestCoast Conference. When they came back in
in two thousand and eight, theyjoined the WHACK, the Western Athletic Conference.
That's where they've been. They're goingto remain in the WHACK through the
twenty twenty four to twenty five schoolyear, but then on July one,
twenty twenty five, Seattle U isgoing to join the West Coast Conference.

(24:10):
That's Gonzaga, Pepperdine, Portland, and so on, so on. An
upgrade in at least in men's basketballand women's basketball competitions, but in all
sports. Now Seattle U is goingto be in the WCC or returning to
it, and a lot of Seattleyou people, I know, I think
this has been a long time incoming, So good news for them.

(24:30):
For those up on the hilltop Chras. Four nine, four to five one.
We had an eventful hour and ahalf here, what do people have
to say about that? Well, fireworks and Jim Bowden was on I'll tell
you that text line blew up four, two five. I don't understand why
we would want Pete a Lonzo rightnow so we can have another guy who
hits just above the Mendoza line.He strikes out at a rate that's less

(24:52):
than I think pretty much anybody,at least the best hitters in the Mariners
lineup right now. That's one two. Is nobody in New York or the
Majorleague Baseball thinks he's going to continuehitting around two hundred and be one for
his last twenty eight as he wasgoing into the beginning of this week.
That's two and then three again. The reason that Alonso or Guerrero, those
kind of players become available is thecontract situation. End of a contract.

(25:17):
Team may not want to resign orat least wait till after he's a free
agent to entertain resigning him. Sothose are the kind of guys that become
available. You're not going to geta Julia Rodriguez type in the trade market,
young beginning of a huge contract,or young under club control for multiple
years. They aren't available because noone trades those guys, so it's of
what's available that Pete Alonzo comes up. Jim Bones been in Major League Baseball

(25:41):
long enough sixteen years as a GMto know that. He also said,
though it was interesting, Chris, because of the expanded playoffs and the extra
wildcard teams, that it's tougher forgms now to make deals with teams who
think, maybe erroneously, that they'restill in the playoffs all the way into
July when they're five six, tengames in five. Another one from the

(26:02):
four different number obviously, but fourtwo five. The Mariner struck out fifty
seven times in the twin series. That would be striking out nineteen innings.
That I'd be nineteen out of thirtysix innings played with no extra innings.
That is crazy. He's actually fourmore than that. It's even not quite
that it was fifty three. Butyeah, he's about that. It's bad.

(26:25):
He's right. Two six Bowden loveit, honesty and laying it down
refreshing. Is that how a lotof people are feeling. You're happy to
hear that, because I don't know. I think the m's are in a
it's win now mode, As hesaid their window is this is it?

(26:45):
And I feel we've heard that forthe last what three four years? Oh,
this is the window. But whenJim said it, I could hear
in his voice that this is it. Well, because you don't hit it
now, you're not seeing this run. For another I don't even want to
throw a number out, but youget where I'm going. In the previous
years, Bryce Miller and Logan Gilbertaren't what they are now. They were
getting to that and now here theyare, they've arrived. And that in

(27:07):
the fact that they're going to becomearbitration eligible here in the next year.
So are the reasons why the timeis Ney is absolutely now from the two
six, they are where they shouldbe in salary. They aren't cheap.
It was bad signings and bad hittingphilosophy, two things could be true.
But they're supposed to fix the strikeouts. That's why Suarez isn't here. That's

(27:30):
why Taoscar Hernandez is no longer here. I think earlier this week I gave
off the stats of a couple ofthose guys. We don't need to mention
that again. Pete Alonso, bythe way, his strikeout percentage this season
as poorly as he's hitting is twentypoint seven percent for his career, it's
twenty two percent. I rattled offfour Mariners, Julia Rodriguez, Jorge Polanco

(27:53):
among them who have strikeout rates atthirty percent, Mitch Haniger twenty nine point
nine. The ball in play wouldhelp this offense. Let alone getting base
hits and driving in runs. Justputting the ball and plane having productive outs
with runners on base would help thisoffense. From the two five to three,
yay, Stanton is looking in themirror trying on sports coats. Not

(28:17):
a good one, double breasted orsingle breast. I wonder taxt back in.
Let us know. Let's see herewe go two five to three.
If the Mariners trade Emerson, Hancockand ty France or the Mets for Pi
Alonzo, this person wants their prospectsas well. Huh. I think I
don't think you would need the otherprospects. I don't know how you filling

(28:41):
that, Greg If are you wantinga prospect from the Mets with Pete Alonzo?
Not only only if you're dipping intoyour farm system beyond Hancock. The
propose trade Jim Bowden was was tyFrance and Emerson Hancock for Pete Alonzo.
And in that case, you mayhave to get somebody, maybe a single,
a prospect you recently drafted to throwinto that because ty France, not

(29:06):
at his present performance is enough toI think they would have to dip into
their farm system. This is fromthe three six oh. I hate this
failed criminal ownership group more than anything. Okay, I think a lot of
fans people are feeling that exact sameway. This is it, three to

(29:30):
six oh. This ownership group isthe most criminal, abysmal failure in a
history of professional sports. I don'tknow that that's a strong state, but
I understand the frustration. They're inthe top ten hashtag asked Greg, and
this is from Jeff. How goodwould the District one championship game be tomorrow
between Cedar Park and Meriden her Bothteams have D one level pitchers going head

(29:55):
to head. So if you guysdon't know Greg Bell as a coach as
well in high school sports, andthat is baseball, I coach at University
Prep High School. In the EmeraldSound Conference that Cedar Park Christian won this
year, I'm proud to say webeat Cedar Park Christian a number one team
in the state at the time.We had a celebration. Guys. You
guys remember that Adam Hate is theDivision one prospect he's talking about the Texters

(30:15):
talking about Adam Hate is committed toOregon State. He may get drafted in
the top ten rounds of the NFLof the Major League Baseball Draft, and
he'll have a decision to make.We beat Adam Hate won nothing. It
was wild. My junior pitcher completegame, four hit or eleven strikeouts.
I think Cedar Park, I thinkour league's really good year over year,

(30:37):
and Cedar Park is exemplary in theirpitching, and I think they win over
Meridian and although Meridian. And thegreat thing about the district high school baseball
in Washington, if you win yourfirst two games of a district tournament,
you go straight to the district final. You are automatically in the state tournament.
And that's a fun game to play. I played it a couple of
years ago. When you know you'realready in the state game and you get

(30:57):
to play for a district her that'sfun. That's a really fun game to
play. And so have fun CedarPark, Christian and Meridian. But I'm
rooting for our league brethren and hopefullythey can take it home. This is
from the two six in regards toMama Belle joining on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline,
two o six says best segment ever. Thank you. I appreciate that.

(31:21):
So Mom, my twin sister inMichigan, who was about twenty minutes
away from my mom and dad, have been texting me during the show and
the reason why she wasn't calling isbecause it kept showing up as spam because
she never heard from this phone numberbefore. Also, while we were talking
to her, my eighty nine yearold father, who was in failing health,
was getting very upset about the statusof a prescription medication and didn't think

(31:45):
that my mom was devoting enough attentionto that. Oh, while talking to
fireworks going on, I thought maybewe could. That would have been some
drama, that would have been alittle bit hilarious. It's insight into how
that works that at last we didn'thave that on the air. But thank
you, I appreciate that. Anduh yeah, some of from the two
five three said, Greg, soundslike Mom wants you to move to Michigan.

(32:07):
Yes, she does. She's mentionedthat many times although she has been
very great about letting us spread ourwings and go. I mean I moved
to the West Coast when I wasright out a call out of West Point.
But yes, she would, shewould. She always asked when are
you coming back again? She soundedlike the Chamber of Commerce in Michigan House
sweet, thank you she did.She loves where she's at. Last one

(32:30):
from the two o six Beekeeper isawesome. So side nugget here we talked
about off wax off air, butGreg was saying, hey, Chris,
this is the reason why mom didn'tpick up spam calls. So for everyone
out there, including Greg who saidhe's going to probably try to watch The
bee Keeper and Draft Day hopefully.Yeah, if you haven't seen The Beekeeper
with Jason Statham. Statham Staffam isone of those two you know who I'm

(32:52):
talking about, go see it.It's a good film. And to remind
you, hey, you should stillfrom old people, no matter what,
did you see Ian Frenezi here yethe is the mayor and Maple Valley is
here and again in his Washington Stateregalia. Oh sure this year this day
because it's so warm. If youmissed it, Jim Bowden just laid it
down for his former GM. Nowif the Athletic and cbssports saying the Mariners

(33:15):
need to make a trade for abat now, they need trade Brian wu
or Emison Hancock to do it,and there's no excuse in this window won't
last forever. With the great startingpitching, he said, they have World
Series caliber pitching, they have WorldSeries caliber defense most nights, but they
do not have anywhere near playoff oreven five hundred caliber hitting. And he
have in his mind they have topart with top prospects to get it,

(33:37):
even if it's for a rental player. You'll be able to hear that playback
on the iHeartRadio app search for ninetythree point three KJRFM, and on Apple
and wherever else you can find yourpodcast. Chryst will have that up after
the show ends and you can listento it all weekend while you're out in
the sun on a beautiful weekend inSeattle. Ninety three point three KJRFM.

(34:06):
Welcome back, Ny three point threeKJRFM. This Friends Like Music means that
the great Mayor of Maple Valley isjoining us. The friends like music.
I like it, I like itnot quite friends, but it sure sounds
like we're all friends. We areall all friends here. Yeah, why
not? Absolutely? Absolutely? Wehad Jim Boden go off when the Mariners

(34:27):
ownership and direction the last I hearda couple of clips. We're going to
play a couple of highlights at twelvethirty I think today, because it sounds
like he kind of went off alittle bit. He did. He said,
it's time now, and it maytake brand Wu or Emerson Hancock.
You're gonna have to trade him toget a bat. But paraphrasing, he
said, get it done. Hedid, he said get it done now,
but parphrasing, he said, look, they have a World Series pitching

(34:51):
staff, they have World Series defenseon most nights, but the offense is
absolutely not even close, and thatthey'll just get beat five to two.
They do make the playoffs as isand be home his words as quickly as
they got in. Yep. Wheredoes he think the World Series defense is
besides catcher and center field. Yeah, I think it's a perception more than

(35:12):
so far as out of it.I think that's a big perception. I
there, they're below average at firstbase based on range, they're below average
at second base shortstop. I knowhe had a gold glove when he was
healthy JP, but that was along time. Gilmore's a better defensive player
right now. Third base is yougave up your gold glove, third base,

(35:34):
gave up your gologlove third basement inyour corner. Outfield spots are a
horror show. Where does the goalnow? Yeah, maybe that's the perception.
But what the rest of the stuffI heard bits and pieces, Like
I said, we're going to playlater, but yeah, the pitching staffs
World Series caliber for sure. Yeah, absolutely interesting to see what WU does
tonight against this team. But yeah, good stuff. He Boden's point was,

(35:58):
you got your four in for theplayoffs, you can get the you
can even get in the playoffs withthose four, right, so you can
trade the fifth or Emmerson, EmersonHancock. That was Mowden's point. We
also talked about, and I'm sureyou've talked about this too, that it's
harder to make trades, especially earlybefore the deadline, with teams who think
they're in it erroneously because of theexpanded playoffs. Yeah, I think that

(36:19):
that is kind of the hard part, right is it? Like I mean,
Oakland probably thinks they're in Yeah, and mathematically they really are. The
three games under five hundred, right, they're run differential. It's just it's
crazy. You know, you've beenmentioning that run differential for the A's all
week. Do you know that includesa twenty to four win last week?
I know. Now. The otherthing is, I'm to talk about this

(36:39):
a little bit. A lot ofit came in the first eight games ten
games of the season, so they'reI mean, they're a different fascinating series,
like like Texas was a cool seriesbecause like, Okay, brom or
here we are, Let's see whatwe can do against these guys, right,
Minnesota kind of the same thing.Red hot team coming in Oakland's Oakland
and Kansas City are fascinating because twoteams that no one expected anything of and

(37:00):
they're both playing above their skis, and you're like, Okay, well,
what's Seattle going to do against theseteams? Don't be like the Sea get
swept by the Ram by the Rams, oh my god. And but but
that happened, we saw it upclose. But that was also a great
example to the Rams are actually agood example, Chris. We don't know

(37:22):
anything when seasons start, like, really, I brought up the odds a
couple of days ago for the NFLthis season. I'm looking at him like,
I just don't know. I mean, I think we all pretty assume
assume that Kansas City is gonna begood just because of one guy. Really,
but can Samprus goes to be reallygood defense outside of that? Like
all these are the teams that arefavorites. Like nobody thought Green Bay was

(37:45):
a playoff team last year, shockedand look what they did. Yeah,
with Jordan Love and all these guys. So I don't know. It's fun
series coming up this weekend. Andno marine layer, by the way,
you know, I've looked outside. There is no marine layer. There's no
there's no marine layer. No excuses. There's a presidential mortar cad that's gonna
cause havoge talking about that recavoc aroundhere. But there's nothing right. If

(38:07):
you're south of downtown Seattle at aboutfive or six o'clock, God to be
off the road. Man. Don'teven run a helicopter. I know.
I mentioned this a fan yesterday thoughthere was and Dick kind of noticed the
same thing when he drove in there. There was a lot less traffic yesterday,
he thought, and I thought todaythere was not a lot of it.
There was very little into downtown Fridaythough. I feel Friday there's a

(38:30):
Friday Light perception that isn't always it'sJimmy bound like boat boat and right bon
bone like with with with Mariner's defense, Friday Light's a little bit of a
miss miss perception sometimes. But Ithink when it's eighty on a Friday for
the first time all year, yeah, that's a reality. All right.
What are you doing for your momfor Mother's Day? My mom on the

(38:52):
air, I'm split. It's hardfor me because you know, she's over
here and we're now or plus away. So it's I'll give her a shout
and give her a shout out todayand stuff. And got to take care
of my wife as well. Soyeah, a lot of a lot of
your kids do well. My kidsone of them is not even in town
and the other one. Yeah,I eat, I cook for everybody,

(39:15):
but we end up doing We gotto get some food from the mayor.
Man. What do you say,Greg, I bet it's barbecue. I'm
with it. Uh, there'll beblackstone and smoking going on. We got
we got it going on. Wegot and we've got a lot of dietary
restrictions in the festal. We gota lot going on with that, So
it's that's a challenge in my mind'sbeen wrapped around that all week. So

(39:35):
yeah, we're gonna give away sometickets from Mother's Day today though on Sunday.
Yeah, louis starting, uh huh, We're gonna give those away today.
So what else do you have onyour show? Let's see, I'm
gonna hopefully, I'm gonna I'm gonnaget this right. Satoa la maya maya
low maya, low maya, lowmaya, low maya. L o w

(39:55):
I mean sounded like w wow loolalo maya. So toa lalmeya. He's
getting it right. That's what I'vebeen told. I'm gonna ask him big
enough you want to ask. He'sgonna join us at one o'clock today,
and we're going to start a newsegment at two o'clock today, Friends of

(40:16):
Furnasse. It's a mail it inFriday, and we'll explain that a little
bit later. To Amaya was playingguard last week in the Yeah, the
last two years he was at Utah, was a guard at the Senior Bowl
was guarded for didn't he tell uson Draft Day two that when he played
tackle last year, right in thelast couple of years, it was out
of necessity, which is weird thatUtah would be short Lineman. That's correct

(40:38):
because I'll tell you right now, having lived there for six years, you
know what they've gotten in that areaLineman, like a lot of them,
not to mention, they have apipeline to Simon. That's why. Yeah,
well there's a huge Polynesian population inespecially West Valley City outside of Salt
Lake. I mean because the moreof a church specifically a lot of times
he's not from Salt Lake, butbut they've always had But I don't know

(41:00):
if his injuries or what it was, but yeah, we gonna kick you
out to the right tackle. Butyeah, he's definitely a guard in the
NFL. So we'll talk to him, get to know. I remember the
interview once a Saturday. That wasa pretty charming guy, kind of fuck
guy. So we'll talk to himcoming up at one o'clock. Looking forward
to that. Chris Kid and IGreg Bell the News Tribute. Thank you
for listening all week. We'll beback on Monday. From ten am to
noon. The Inferinesce is up nexton ninety three point three kJ RFM.
