Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi, Welcome back Great Bell the news tribute Christopher gad
with you for the second hour I met the Virginia
Mason Athletics Center. See you are going to have the
fifteen practice of training camp today. We're gonna be joined
by Hugh Millen here in a second, let me go
through headlines brought to you by Venue Kings dot Com.
The Mariners run ESPN Sunday Night Baseball last night for
a home game for the first time in twenty years,
and they turned into a party season high in runs

(00:26):
twelve to one. Bush weackonto the New York Mets have
completed three game series sweep total runs into three games.
Mariners twenty two. Mets won two more home runs for
Kyle Rally last night, five barbi, three hits for Jorge Polanco,
including a home run and a double. Louis Castillo used
the sun in the shadows around the mountain and the
mare Rare four to ten started on National TV to

(00:48):
strike out nine and six innings to get his tenth
win of the season. Juli Rodriguez returned after missing twenty
days on the injured list with the high ankle sprain.
He went zero for five with five strikeouts for the
first time in his careers at the HS Last night,
Marinerds won four in a row, but Houston's won five
in a row, so the trash Cans. They swept the
Red Sox and Fenway of the weekend. The Mariners four
game winning streak has only kept them tied with Houston

(01:09):
for first place in the American League West. Now, the
Manners head out with three city road trip to Detroit, Pittsburgh,
and the Los Angeles Dodgers are off today. Three game
series with the Tigers in Michigan starts tomorrow and the
Sea at the Olympics in Paris ended yesterday. US men
and women's basketball teams both win gold sixty one consecutive
wins for the women, eighth consecutive gold medal win. Steph

(01:30):
Curry went crazy at the end for the US men
on Saturday and they beat France to win the gold medal.
I think it's fifth consecutive for them. US women's soccer
team won the gold medal beating Brazil. That's the first
gold medal for the US women in Olympic soccer since
two thousand and twelve. The Seahawks sixteen to three preseason

(01:51):
win number one in preseason game number one Saturday at Englewood, California,
over the Chargers, first game for Mike McDonald, the Mike
McDonald Era US. Now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, here's
our man, Hume Ellin. I know you were on this
morning with Chuck and Bucks, so thanks for coming on again, Hugh.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
That's all good. Good to be with you, Greg, Chris,
thank you. Yeah, first game.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
What were your first It was vanilla scheme wise mostly,
But what'd you think of Mike McDonald in his defense?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Well, we only saw six plays, right, and they were
all one safety cover one or a snap there cover
three and so no disguising, not the typical too high
structures that that that morph. So I think they just
lined up and played. You're going to get some backup quarterback.

(02:38):
But but I I would just say they were I mean,
you know, they had six plays and four of them
were for no game, one of them was for two yards,
and one of them was for five yards. So they
did as well as you could they. I thought they
were very active at the point of attack from from

(02:59):
the snap. They stuffed that power play.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Then I think in past coverage you could say that
that that first third down there was a drop slant,
but I thought that three Wolan had pretty good coverage there.
I think the the next series, the third series, you
saw it Reek Wolling on both first and third down

(03:23):
chase crossing routes across the field to get yeah. Yeah,
and he's done that before. It's just you know, he
has that speed where he can he can line up
in outside leverage and and then a receiver that X
receiver with a reduced split close to the ball. He figures, okay,
he's he's got to stay outside leverage to defend the

(03:46):
outbreaking routes. But now when the guy Uh goes on
an inbreaking shallow cross, now you got to get on
your horse to catch him, right.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
But he has the outright speed.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Remember now at the combine, as you know, Greg Uh,
he was in the ninety ninth excuse me, one hundred
percentile in forty yard dash and one hundred percentile in height,
one hundred percentile on armlank, the ninety ninth percentile and jumping.
So is his physical skill set and the traits are
just you know, off the chain, and so you see

(04:17):
that when when he's chasing down those those crossing routes.
He uses that length and he just giddy up and
he goes and catches the ball.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
So it's it's fun to watch. There's so much to.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
To devour when you really get into the tape. But
those are some cursory thoughts.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
I want to look at the running back room and
actually in that regard with Kenny McIntosh and George Hallani
that those two are fighting for the third and final
probably spot at running back. What did you make of
those two last night and the offensive line? Well, I
though last night, but they're on the game last week.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
I think that Kenny macintosh made more plays running. I
mean he had thirty three yards post contact on eight carries,
but he had a very very feeble effort on a

(05:12):
on a pass blocking Uh. That that's that's gonna you know,
the result in a sack. I mean almost like appalling,
and and that that is not going to earn any favors.
I think for Halani, uh that that touchdown run was
his best run. Now that was that was an interesting
that That's a play called duo and there's some nuance there.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
The way the Seahawks did it.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
They have a slight counterstep with a quarterback ball handling
where they want to make it look like inside zone
to the left, and the initial step by the running
back to the left, and then you get double teams
at the point of attack. It's it's almost always a
two tight end play. And so they got the nice

(05:56):
double teams and and and they got the collapse from
what you're trying to.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Do is you just run up to the middle.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
You read the middle linebacker if he if he pressed,
if he presses immediately to the hole, then then you
have an opportunity for a bounce. But of course you
got to be able to beat the corner and and
they got the desired influence on the secondary on that
and so it was a relatively easy play and an
easy read, but it was still a nice run. Luckily

(06:22):
went untouched into the end zone. So I would say
that both of them made a pretty good account of themselves.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
It's just kind of what do you want?

Speaker 2 (06:33):
But I would say, you know, as an underscore as
as a third running back, if you can't protect, you're
not gonna be playing. And so Macintosh has got to
clean that up. He had the worst play of anybody
because nobody fumbled, but that would be the worst play
on the tape in my opinion, between the two.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Well did you.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Think of Sam how I thought he was what he
was in training camp last week? He was accurate, too good,
and sometimes really good on some throws and then out
of nowhere some really inaccurate throws. The one on the
left flat to the tight end Brady Russell that had
made him go into the ground and no game because
he had to dive and catch it. And then I thought,
you on the second and goal out on the right

(07:15):
flat to Halani. Maybe it's nitpicking, but if he puts
that on the chest plate between the two numbers, Hani
can plant his foot and get to the goal line
and probably score a touchdown. Instead the throw took him
into the sideline.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
You know, Greg, usually you and I agree. Have you
watched the tape on that, because because I thought, first
of all, now he dirted a.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Ball to uh oh boy out to the left.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
I think that was Derek Young, Yeah, it might have.
I think that might have been the Brady Russell one.
I'm moving to them.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
But the Brady Russell won that ball was tipped at
the lion of scrimmage.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Oh, I didn't see that.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, yeah, the break that was in the left flat, Yeah,
that was tipped.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Okay, But but.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Now he had another he had another omaha, the the
five yard speed out that he did dirt and I,
I don't know, it's somewhere in my notes here who
who missed it? But but but uncatchable? Uh at the
goal line? What my read on that he came out
and and I thought that that Halani was gaining slight

(08:16):
ground and uh and and he picked up his angle,
and I thought he threw the ball exactly the way
you'd want. I thought he was under duress. I I
think if if somebody held a pistol to my temple
and said, okay, could have it been any better? Could
could have been a tenth of a second quicker where
he got it? You know, when you're on the run,

(08:38):
you know, you generally want to throw off your off
your when your right foot was the is the last
foot on the ground. And and so he would have
had to been not one but two steps faster. I
don't I'm not sure if that would have been possible.
So look, I I have a long list. We could
we could burn a whole hour here I and I
went a whole segment this morning, and I was critical

(09:01):
of Howl on a lot of stuff. I'm just looking
at this, but you know one play I really didn't
like that the deep throw that he threw to Bobo
on the post route down by the goal line. You
remember that, Greg right, Christopher on that play. That's I
wrote in my my notes black jungle. That Jesus as

(09:25):
I said, I said that I'm Christopher. I'm not trying
to make a racist term here.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Black should he.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Even should he haven't even thrown that ball.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Well, yeah, now I'm halfway through. I gotta I gotta explain.
First of all, in my terminology, black and blue are
to the left because the second letter is now brown
and green are to the right because the second letters
and are okay, so that ex and then jungle is
a word conjunction between a jet and a go get it.
If you say jet and go really fast, it kind
of sounds like jungle.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
So the uh, the concept on the left, as I said,
the black side, the blue side, the left side was jungle,
and that is where you have Jackson Smith and Jig
But running a speed out, a jet route, a twelve
yard out against a linebacker in a four deep three
under in a three under defense, you're going to leverage

(10:16):
that linebacker. You got the clear out on the outside.
It's wide open Jackson Smith and jig was opened by
three four yards. And the play before, or maybe it
was a player too before when when they had tried
to take a shot and he got sacked. Remember our
man McLendon Harris had had given up that sack. Day

(10:36):
They had a great play. It was a wide open
Jackson Smith, beautiful design. Jackson Smith on the slot to
the right had beat the safety on a sting route,
leaning to the corner and then to the post, and
it would have been a touchdown had it not been
for the breakdown in protection.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
So I think I'm not in the head of Sam.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Howell, but I think that he was really eager to
try and get that back. And so now he comes
back and he throws the post route. Well, he's going
to a guy who runs a four to nine. And
the structure of the play the way the tight end
had had ran his over route from the inside as
opposed to vertical, he was he was He's running a
deep crossing route that took the safety to How's right

(11:20):
out of the play. Uh, and so he could the
safety to Howel's right could turn and double team with Bubble. Well,
one thing, just if I just say that to you
right now, knowing very little about football. I'm not saying
you guys, but if somebody knows very little, does that
sound enticing to you to throw a double coverage post
to a guy who runs a four to nine? No,

(11:40):
you know, so the play should have gone over to
to h Jackson Smith and Jigball on that that twelve
yard speed out and and so, I don't know, that's
just like flyers up.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
No, don't do that. This is pro football. Don't do that.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
And so and there was other times where where you know,
when he got his arm hit on a third down,
he was trying to get the ball over there to
to Drek Young on the comeback. But he's Drek Young
is going against the Sante Samuel. I would rather go
to Jackson Smith and Jigma on an all hook concept

(12:16):
in man coverage. Jackson Smith and Jig was on my
left and slot. It's a closer throw the safety the
nickel is off as opposed to press. You know, there's
just a number of things where you go through and
you go I don't like how he's thinking this through.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
I don't like his decisions. And that's just a couple
out of I'm looking at it. I think nine or
ten on my sheet that I didn't like his decision making.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
That's exactly what Ryan Grubbs said last Thursday about Sam Howe.
He said he had to work in his decision making,
and they said that they were working with him on
the decision making. Peace and Hugh Mowing just outlining that here,
Hugh from Saturday's game, who may have stood out to
you that you weren't expecting your that may have helped
himself on Saturday in your mind.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Well, it depends on how deep down the roster you
want to go. I mean I thought that I thought
fifty eight really uh on flash Derek Hall. I thought
I thought he was impressive. I think from a receiver standpoint,
I kinda.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Eighty two.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Cody White, Yep, you know, he he he had a
he had a nice catch over the middle and he
and he got some separation on a ball that he
didn't see.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
I thought there was some size there.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
And and and uh and potential speed. I think that well,
I thought the offensive line was a disappointment, and maybe
we'll talk about that goal line down at the goal
line where they didn't execute.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
But but I think that that uh.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Who is playing left tackle uht.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
I thought he. I thought he played pretty well. Greg.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
I thought what he lacked in physicality, I thought he
made up for with relative athleticism and technique. And so
I think he's showing signs of improvement. I thought he
moved better than I remember him from in the past.
You know, those those are some some guys that you know,
I thought we only saw a very brief time. But

(14:24):
I thought that Terrell Dodson, as your mic obviously an
extremely critical position. I thought that he seemed to know
what he was doing in that stick when uh when
when they moved that when the Chargers tried that mid
zone to the left and Jaren Reid got penetration and
sent the running back back to Dodson. Dodson just oh man,
he put his face in the honey bucket and and

(14:45):
just that that was an.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
Old school uh, just stick. So I like that.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Yeah, there was there was a lot, there was there
was a lot to like with with the way that defense, uh,
you know, in in in short spurts and and of
course that's why I said it depends on where you
want to be on the depth chart. I've mentioned some
obscure guys, but I don't think we can not talk

(15:12):
about Bayern Murphy.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
That was that was some kind of impressive.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
That was he was the best player in the field
to me, and double team and you don't often see
double and triple teams preseason game. What what stood out?
I've seen his power and speed out here every day
in practice. What stood out to you and about Murphy?

Speaker 2 (15:32):
Well, I think that you know the one where you
had the big the tackle for loss, and he should
have had a sack, of course, but but the the
idea that Okay, So in zone blocking, you get you know,
you're gonna have this double team at the first layer,
at the defensive line layer, and then you're gonna have
after a period of time, both let's say the center

(15:53):
and the guard are going to have their eyes on
the next level, the linebacker. It's really just you know,
you know, it's it's it's a tag team. It's two
on two and within an area, right, but it's going
to be determined who comes off of the double team.
I'm talking about the lineman now based on the flow
of the linebacker. And and what strikes me is the

(16:16):
scouting report will be Look, you can't you cannot leave
Byron Murphy even a tenth of a second too fast.
You've got to stay on that defensive line because one
guy can't handle him, and you know, the center in
that case, the guard was getting to the second level

(16:36):
by by the Chargers way of thinking, I would think
too quickly because now it's just too much space. There's
too much quickness and too much strength for one guy
to handle. So I just think that he's going to
command double teams for longer, a longer duration of the play.
Does that make sense? Yeah, you know, the timing of
opposing offensive lineman. They're going to have to stay at

(16:59):
the defensive line level longer before they can get to
the linebacker level. And that's really going to help the
linebackers make plays.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Right. I could talk to you forever about Buyerer.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
Go ahead, Yeah, yeah, no, I was just saying, but
but no, you're right that that ability where they can
they can line him up in the A gap and
have him responsible for the B gap because because his
lateral quickness is going to get there and and he
can still penetrate and and still convert quickness first latterly
and then vertically into force and vice versa. Can they
can line him up in the B gap, scrape him

(17:34):
hard and have them responsible for the A gap. All
of that stuff just reeks havoc on less athletic offensive linemen.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
I know you haven't seen him yet. They've haven't actually
had it, not the game anyway, they've actually had him
lined up at left defensive end at times in some
nickel packages out here at practice, and that would probably
be a whole other test for him against offensive tackles. Yeah,
starting ones.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
I'm a little you know, he wasn't great at that
in Texas. You know when he got when he went
again again, offensive lineman would you know, tend to be
taller and certainly longer armed. I think that's where he finally,
you know, you know, seesus kryptonite. Now that's in the
pat Maybe maybe he can, but but my sense is

(18:14):
that he's gonna be better working in the three and
the one and the zero, even the zero technique.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
Now, Hugh, I know you mentioned that you're on with
what Chuck and book and also Softy, how do we
do we didn't overexpose you too much, did we.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
Hey, you know, it's it's all good.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
I know it's people are eager to to to discuss
the Seahawks because it's their first the first sight we've
seen of him. We didn't get much of a glimpse.
But but but I think the the the defense gets
an A plus. I think the the offense gets you know,
maybe a C. The offensive line. You know, I watched

(18:51):
it for several hours yesterday and and uh, they got
to clean some things up. But all on balance, let's
give it a B and and get really excited about
some of those pieces on defense.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Thanks, you appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
Rock and roll.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Okay, appreciate it. By bye.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
Okay you bet.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
Hugh Mellon joining us talking about this what he saw
in the seahawks first game. He gave the offensive line,
what do you say, He's got some work to.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Do, got some work to do on the offensive line,
and there is definitely room for improvement. I will say
I thought Sam was okay. I know he probably gives
I think if he gave a grade to Sam, he'd
probably give him a D. I know he's not big
on giving out grades, but I thought Sam was okay.
I thought the offensive line could improve a little bit
more and that would help Sam or in this scenario,
because I think there was one play where the Chargers

(19:37):
deal at the edge came off and Sam had no
time and he was able to throw it away, which
is I would say he's.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Got some of the best throwaways in the league. Man,
when he throws it away, they go to the stands. Well,
that's good, right, because one, I know what you're talking
about that and that was good because in with Washington,
what was he doing. He was throwing picks, twenty one
touchdown and twenty one interceptions, so it was good that
he didn't turn the ball over. But now let's improve
on that. So instead, I know Hugh talked about his

(20:07):
decision making in some of the throws. Yeah, that was
a really tough throw to Jake Bobo and he was
double team.

Speaker 4 (20:14):
There was no need for that. There's underneath someone else
was open. There's another play that stood out to me
that I didn't get to ask him about. But it's
gonna come down to decision making and putting the ball
where it needs to be. So I think if he
can improve on that each week, So next this next
coming week and even in the practice against the Titans,
if he can take that next step and find the checkdowns.
Dare I say, find the next valuable person that is

(20:36):
open and make that connection.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
Just do it.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
I think that'll be huge for him and then maybe
he can improve on that and the gray will go
up for young Sam Howe, who could potentially be the
future for the Seahawks that quarterback position if they don't
draft another person.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yeah, we said this. These preseason games and these preseason
training camp practices may be what the Seahawks go on
this time next year to decide what they have in
Sam Howe, because if it goes according to plans, Gino
Smith gets all the starts and all the meaningful apps
this coming season for the Seahawks. Fourtnite, four to five
one in the tell him, we'll do text line what
you thought of the Seahawks preseason opener. We already see

(21:07):
some many comments coming in on the text line. We'll
read those back tech those text back. Next, we'll also
talk to Infinets who joined us before his show starts
at twelve. Greg Bell from the Virginia Mason Athletic Center
for the Seahawks fifteenth practice of training camp. Lots more
coming up next on ninety three point three KJRFM. Hi,

(21:28):
welcome back, Greg Bell of the News Tribune, Christopher Kid
with you. I'm at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center for
the Seahawks practice this afternoon. Close the door and be
on the radio at the same time. We're told Connor
Williams is going to be talking to the media after
practice the new Center, which means he is in the building.
We'll see what that means when he's actually on the

(21:48):
practice field to be the new center for the Seahawks.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
You know what the music means.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Time to read back your text on the tell him
we'll do text line four nine, four five one.

Speaker 5 (21:57):
Well, this is starting off great for me.

Speaker 4 (22:00):
Six I'm guessing it's my it's our guy, Travis Kid.
No home runs but five strikeouts for Julio good lord. Yeah, yep, yeah,
he's back. He is back, and it's it's it's hard
out here to hit. So we're gonna move on from that.
Let's go to some Seahawks till well, let me right before.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
You leave that about one in the Mariners four to
five the Fish. This was funny last night I was
watching the game, and they brought the pike to the
market fish thrower and the texter for too fast, says
the fixed, So let me set the scene. They're delivering
fish into the press box for the Sunday night broadcast
Sunday Baseball on ESPN. Carl Rabbits at water Perez David
Conan the booth and the kid, young guy from the

(22:41):
fish market comes up and he says, what's your name.
Carl Rabbits says, well, by the way, gives him a headset. Hey,
let's put you on the air. And the guy's like, wow,
I never thought i'd be on the air. What's your name?
And Carl Rabbits asked, and the guy goes, my name
is Dave. Dave goes, what's your name?

Speaker 5 (23:00):
Perfect?

Speaker 1 (23:01):
It's not knowing who Carl Rabbits was the fishmonger not
knowing Carl's name last night was hilarious.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
I agree for to play that wasping all right. From
the two o six.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
My gut tells me that the Seahawks are going to
be good, not great, and they really need a solid
backup quarterback that they do not have right now. If
Gino gets hurt and is out for more than two games,
the season will be a loss.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
Yeah, most starting quarterbacks. If you lose your starting quarterback,
you're pretty much sunk around the league. That's true. The
Seahawks are trying to hedge that by getting a guy
who's played before and done it before. But I've been
telling you what I've been seeing a training camp is
that there is a grand Canyon sized golf between number
one and number two quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
Right now, our guy Marcus out of two to six.
I was actually going to watch the game so I
could see bar Murphy, but I want to take a
nap before the Mariner game.

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Glad to glad.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
To hear about his performance though, I'm making another defensive
Rookie of the Year bet right now. Well, Marcus, throwing
additional five dollars for your boy kid, because I might
need some money at the end of the year if
Juliu doesn't get these these home runs taken care of. Okay,
this is from our guy Teddy five six two. Good morning,
Greg and Christopher ball game here. I tried to get

(24:17):
down to the field level to give you a shout out, but.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
Security wouldn't let me down there.

Speaker 4 (24:22):
I thought, how it was really good looks like he's
got some game better than Walker.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
Good to see Julio back.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
I think he needed a rehabit Tacoma before being inserted
into the lineup, or they need.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Stick point's in a st point Well.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
Just to get the swing back, right, we just a
first text that got in is five strakeouts. So just
get a little confidence, get a little swing going. And
he doesn't have to play multiple games, maybe just a
few innings. I don't know why not. Would it hurt No,
So that's just my thought on.

Speaker 5 (24:53):
It, Greg.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Yeah, it was curious that he missed twenty days and
has no minor league rehab started dollars. I thought he
did the.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
Two Yeah, just a game a day or two.

Speaker 4 (25:02):
As you mentioned from the eight to oh one, Howell
looked like I saw a backup, not the future.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
Yeah, and that's really what they're trying to determine. Right,
He's at twenty three years old and his contract ends
after next year.

Speaker 5 (25:16):
That's a good point, very good point, Greg.

Speaker 4 (25:20):
Do you feel like mm Mike McDonald is unlike Pete
and that Pete told you what his defensive scheme, what
they are running. It doesn't matter because we're better at
stopping you than you are at beating us.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
Well, yeah, he had that was that when they were
going at their best. Now, the last two years Carol
changed up and went to more of a three four
and was a hybrid three four four three, and it
was a little bit different and teams didn't quite know
what Seattle was doing. But at their best, they're leading
to boom Best and Cliff April and Michael Bennett and
Tony McDaniel and Rid Bryant. Yeah, they just lined up

(25:52):
in a four to three cover three. Come beat it.
We're gonna bring the safety down to the box cam,
chancel who you can't block, and we're gonna have ear time.
I mus running all over the field from past mark
to hash mark, the numbers, the numbers, and we have
press corners who can't receivers can't beat.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
Yeah, that's what he did.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
He just lined up in the same thing every time
because their joes were better than the x's and o's not.
So at the end of his tenure, the idea is
to be scheme heavy, not player heavy, because they're not
player best right now, and the scheme heavy. The best
pre eminent young mind in the game and defense was
Mike McDonald, Ben Johnson was on offense with the Detroit

(26:31):
Liones the offensive coordinator. He was seen as the best
potential head coach Canat. He ended up staying Detroit, but
he was the one the Seahawks were considering it as
the offensive mind, Mike McDonald as the defensive mind, and
they went with the defensive innovation mine because they don't
have the players they had when they went to back
to back Super Bowls, the leagion to booms not here anymore.
They went scheme so far, so good. I mean, yeah,

(26:53):
one preseason game, but yeah, answer is point yes, that
Mike McDonald hiring is about scheme, absolutely, and they'll helpe
to build the players around that scheme.

Speaker 4 (27:03):
This is from our buddy from the seven four to seven.
He lives he lives here locally, but Greg will know
exeguly who I'm talking about when I read it. Greg,
I am counting on you to tell the DJ at
practice to play the Seahawks anthem and their practice speaker.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (27:20):
The fact that Byron was getting double team in preseason
was hilarious. They knew he was a problem and that's
from the real Rob. So Greg, you have some homework
to do.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Man, yeah, I guess so, except there are no more
DJs of practice, there's no more fans.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
Well there, the DJ probably.

Speaker 1 (27:34):
Be just on.

Speaker 5 (27:36):
Okay, let's see this next one. From the two O six.

Speaker 4 (27:42):
I am already a big Mike McDonald fan as the
Seahawks new head coach after only one preseason game. I
love Pete Carroll and thought it would take me longer
to move on from him, But I'm already a McDonald believer.
I also thought Sam Howell looks much better than what's
the quote unquote actually have.

Speaker 5 (27:58):
Been saying about him during the pre season.

Speaker 1 (28:03):
There were times he looked better than he did in practices,
but I will tell you that the first four practices
he looked terrible. And that's not expert that's a fact.
I mean, I'm not making that up as some couch
guy that watched it from the film from his couch.
I was standing there and almost hit me with passes
and I was ten yards out of bounds. He got
better after that and started in the first team offense.

(28:24):
He ran when Gino Smith was hurt. For those four practices,
he did look better than that.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
Yes, from the two six, Mike McDonald has high expectations
and so should the fans. Even if the team doesn't
win the division, I think the Seahawks will be getting
the highest eff from the team. Wins and playoff success
will come from how quickly the players grasp the schemes
from offense and defense. I believe the talent is there
all around.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
I agree about the schemes and the timing of grasping
and internalizing and getting the schemes down without mistakes is
the key to the season. That is true.

Speaker 5 (28:57):
Another one from the two to six.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
Not trying to put two much on preseason, but to
see ours look damn good and physically, I think we're
going to like the McDonald era. I think that's a
fair assessment. The physicality was there, and again it was clean.
I think that was something that really stood out to me.
How clean the team played offensively and defensively.

Speaker 5 (29:21):
I like that. I had no problem with it. That
was that was good. From the two h six.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
Regarding some basketball USA team USA, Embiid was key against Serbia.
Give him some credit as well. One and Bid definitely
played a big role in trying. He just had a
dominant game. He was getting to the foul line, knocking
down free throws, they really didn't have an answer for
you'll get in that first half, but collectively as a

(29:49):
unit in the second half, they figured things out, and
embiid was a big process in just slowing the game
down and getting Serbia and foul trouble. I think he
went to the line maybe seven eight times in the
second half. He was just living at the foul line
because they had no answer for him. He was getting
down and dirty. So that was really good to see.
So yeah, and B definitely gets some love there from

(30:10):
the two oh six. I'll tell you how I'm feeling
about the Mariners when they lose the series with the Tigers.

Speaker 5 (30:15):
That's fair. I'm hoping they don't. I'm sure. I'm sure.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
I am more confident that they will handle win at
least two out of the three. That's kind of the
worst case scenario in my in my opinion, two out
of three, which isn't great because the Tigers are terrible,
But with the Ashos right there, who the Ashles play?

Speaker 5 (30:37):
Actually, let me look this up. Do you know off
top grade?

Speaker 1 (30:39):
Before I look it up, I'll.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
Beat you to it.

Speaker 5 (30:42):
Playing the Tampa Bay Rays.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
With that being said, that should be a really tough matchup,
Mariner's got to sweep these guys.

Speaker 5 (30:50):
Maybe I'm being too nice. Two out of three.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
No, you gotta you gotta sweep those guys, So I'm
being too nice. Mariner's gotta get to sweep. I'm assuming
the Astros they play what three games against the Rays?
Who knows what happens there? Worry about what you can
control and those and win those games against the bad
Detroit team.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Again, hate to be a Debbie downer, but when the
Mariners have faced good pitchers trouble back to the one
and two runs and yeah, ten strikeouts and then did
Tigers have some pitching? We saw that last week at
the yard.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
Greg Bliss hits a home run and two days later
option back to Cooma.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
I yes, I know, ma, Ryan Bliss. Please I hear you.

Speaker 5 (31:29):
Dang, Greg, I hearing your voice.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
That was Friday night, man, Friday Night. He gets a
two run over, but probably the reason. Well they ended
up winning going away at the end. But yeah, yeah,
Bliss is not in their plans.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
It's okay.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
Well, I haven't seen the mayor, but I was told
that he is in the building.

Speaker 5 (31:50):
Okay, So with that being said.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Greg, let's take a quick timeout, and coming up next,
we will wrap with Ian Furness and figure out what
he has planned for his show. You're listening to The
Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kid Live on ninety three
point three kjr FM. Welcome back to the program, The
Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kidd. Greg Bill had to

(32:15):
shake Ianfinets just popped in. We are busy as is,
but I do want to point out something that I
said over the airwaves. I misspoke, all right. I meant
to say that the Chicago White Sox that is a
terrible baseball team, and the Mariners don't play them. They
actually are playing the Detroit Lions. So I was thinking

(32:37):
of Chicago White Sox when I made the comment of
the Mariners should dismantle the Detroit Tigers, and I was wrong.
It's actually in my head I was thinking of Chicago
White Sox. So had to get that cleared out because
you know, the Tigers are not terrible in that regard.
So that was on the text line. I just wanted
to get that out. There also a couple other ones

(32:58):
that we didn't get to on the text line guarding
the Mariners. Let's see here, Actually we'll go back to
the Seahawks, y'all need to pump the breaks. It's the
preseason game, first one of the season. Nobody's playing their starters,
even ten percent of their playbooks not even being shown.

Speaker 5 (33:11):
True.

Speaker 4 (33:12):
True, But actually the offensive line for the Chargers, I
believe I'm not mistaken the only player that was not
a starter. Actually, everyone out there was a starter except
the center. So for the most part, the charters stink.
I'll just leave it at that. Mayor, how you doing
today on this good, cool Monday.

Speaker 5 (33:29):
What did you think of the seahawks first preseason game.

Speaker 6 (33:32):
I thought it was that was good. I thought everything
about it was positive, to be honest with you. I
thought the fact that they they looked like a team
that had kind of a little bit of life, a
little bit of fresh start to them. I thought that
the fact that what you said about this, you know,
their offensive line for the Chargers, It's like, yeah, they're

(33:52):
missing one dude, but you know, I mean Seettle was
missing a starting linebacker. In a sense, I liked everything.
I I thought everything we saw in that game was fantastic.
How proved to be something different than we have seen
in training camp? He looked, saying yeah, he looked better
because in training camp, like like, if I'm being honest,
in training camp, he's really hasn't looked good. Like he's

(34:15):
he's had more bad days in terms of accuracy than
good days. Now he will tell you and others sometimes
that might be a receiver going the wrong way, running
the wrong route, you know, younger guys, what have you.
But he just hasn't looked very accurate. There was a
kind of a thought going into this that this is
a guy that was more of a gamer, you know,
like he's like, okay, just wait till lights come on,

(34:37):
and you know, he's not a practice He's not gonna
look great in practice, and he's never gonna look good
throwing the ball when he's throwing it next to Gino
because Gino has just a different level and a different
looking arm and how he spins it and how he
throws the football. But I liked how I thought he
was fine. Defense looked great. You know, there's certain guys

(34:59):
that are on the bus that helped themselves. Certain guy
and I don't even know if Brady Russell, for example,
is on the bubble. You know, he looked fine. Yeah,
I don't think he was on the bubble going in.
But he was like, I think what it shows you
is the pecking order one, two, three, the tight ends.
It's it's no doubt Brown in him. And maybe they'll
keep four. And that's probably gonna be Mabrey if they
do keep four. I thought she looked good.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:22):
I liked his presence in the RP O game. I
mean actually they used him. They used him how he
should be used.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
Yes, exactly right, And Panthers used him two years ago.

Speaker 6 (35:31):
Where whereas that's what Ryan grubbs. You know, Ryan Grubb
wait for it, offensive corner. That's going to use a
guy how he should be used. No, I think I
think everything he came out of that thing was positive.
I mean, it's it's preseason game one, but I thought
everything about it was bider. Murphy looked like a beast.
I mean, I think everything about it was great.

Speaker 4 (35:45):
You know one thing that wasn't great. I'm sure some
people in the text line will agree is where to
watch the game, because not everyone knew.

Speaker 3 (35:51):
How dumb can you be?

Speaker 5 (35:52):
People? It's on Kong and listen the whole thing. You're
going to get seconds. You got thirty seconds. It over
with the go.

Speaker 6 (36:01):
So four months ago, the Cracking announced that they're going
to go to over the air broadcast. Everyone was like,
all right, thankfully, no more Root sports. We don't just
pay for Root sports anymore. Here we go. It's a
great thing, right, That's what we did, King and Kong.
It's over the air broadcast. Get your rabbit ears out
or get off your damn wallet, and that's how that's
how it works. It's not that hard, man. Why is

(36:22):
it so hard for people to find stuff on television
these days? It not that hard.

Speaker 4 (36:26):
It just isn't mind it. Seahawks stream appreciate you, but
what do you have coming up today?

Speaker 6 (36:30):
Man? All right, sorry, get me going all you young
guys with your streaming services. Just to pro tip here,
if you're a Cracking fan, you've been the one bitching
about not being able to watch games on Route the
last three years.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
The majority.

Speaker 6 (36:44):
I'm gonna be on Kong this year, so figure it
out right now, Okay, figure it out we can because
we're on Root. What can want from on Kong? Well,
you know what, dude, that's you. That's a you problem.
At that point, that's a you problem. We're gonna check
in with the mulliwop guys at one o'clock today. I'll
just leave it that. I mean, what else do you
need to know? Mariners sweep, give up one ear, and
run by the starting pitching staff. They were great, love it.

(37:06):
They kicked the crap out almost said a bad word.
They kicked the crap out of a dumb button.

Speaker 3 (37:10):
Good to go.

Speaker 6 (37:10):
Thank you kick the crap out of the Mets. So
we'll talk to the malliwop. Guys are in a good
mood today, we'll do that.

Speaker 4 (37:15):
Coming up at one there it is the Mayor i
Verness is coming up next. Thank you guys for tuning in.
Don't turn that down in coming up next to nine
