Speaker 1 (00:00):
Big show today because we got a lot to talk
about the Seahawks first of all, and we have Hugh
Millan at eleven o'clock. I'm going to talk to him
about where did the Seahawks go at quarterback beyond this year?
We know where they are now Gino Smith, but he
and Sam Howe both got contracts end after twenty twenty five,
and our quarterback at ninety three to three kjar Hugh Millan.
I'm going to ask him that question. He knows what's coming.
(00:22):
I already told Chris to tell him. That's what I'm
going to ask him. I'm also going to ask you
what concerns him about the Seahawks entering the season from
what he's seeing training him. I've said I've stood next
to him with some training camp practices and what encourages him.
We'll talk about that at eleven o'clock. At ten thirty,
you're going to hear from the newest outside linebacker for
the Seahawks. Travis Gibson. Is really interesting yesterday talking to
(00:43):
him the former Bears, former Titans, and for only a
few months former Jaguars defensive end slash outside linebacker. He's
played both, but he's just clear on what he's going
to do here in Seattle, and he gave some insight
into what Mike McDonald's defense schematically is. We've already touched
on it, players have talked about it, but here's Gibson
from the outside on day one with Mike McDonald talking
(01:04):
about the scheme and the system and how it's going
to use it. I thought it was interesting. We're gonna
play that at ten thirty. As I mentioned, your text
is always four nine four five one on the Tolenmude
text line. When it's game time, it's Tully time. Do
you know what a wooden paddle swats are that your
principally had in grade school? I know that old. I'm
not I'm not that young. They have they have swats,
and I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Not back when I was no. Two thousands. No, it
was more so detention, right, you get sense, soct punishment,
you get sent to the counselor's office.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
What's going on? There's something going on at home? Blue
card in the army, I have blue cards. You pulled
the blue card up and you having a mental.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Health It's more of a conversation to try to figure
out what's wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Is there. Do you need assistance anything? That's good? Yeah,
it is good. It's good.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
I didn't get beat down by my principle, although I
did have one principle that filled in.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
I was fearful that he would spank me.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
He was a he was just six foot, just no nonsense,
mister van Borkilo.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
If I'm not I'll never forget. Yeah, he was no
nons never.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
I could just sense, yeah, if I do anything, he
might pummel me into the ground.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
And I just try to be on my p's and q's.
Mister Hallam, mister stan Dardi. The principles I had at
grade school, I still remember. Cut down the NFL yesterday.
We'll talk about what the Seahawks did and why they
did it. I'm bumming, by the way. I'll tell you
why in a minute. But I think I know why
I bumbing. I guess I did not. The Seahawks didn't
(02:29):
expect it either. A waiver claim this morning has me bumming. Oh, Greg,
you knew, Oh well there's two actually then, well, the
one I know, the one you know I'm talking about.
I interviewed the young man. Oh man, No, I the
one I have goes way back. We're gonna have to
continue this from Charlotte. It appears, and I'll tell you
(02:49):
the latest time Chetna and Wilson's injury status. The Mariners man,
they lost another opportunity to get on Houston for first
place in the ao Wes last night, and they were
feeble in doing it. I hardy to talk. Hu Mellin
is gonna be at eleven am, eleven thirty your text
and eleven forty five e In for nests back from
his one day hiatus off the golf course to join
us at eleven forty five before his show from twelve
(03:10):
to three is always on ninety three point three KJRFM
headlines about you by Venue Kings dot com. The Mariners
you had? They lost the Tampa Bay a game. They
led one nothing going into the seventh inning. The one
run said, the one run was Victor Robla. Nothing that
happened did they scored one run? It was how they
did it. Victor Robley is still second, Victor Robley is
still's third. The catcher throws it into left field. Oh,
(03:32):
Victor Roblaz thank you. The Victor Roblay show was the
them's only offense. So what was the score that they
ended up being three to two because they scratched out
a run on us. You could just say three to
Victor Roblaz, yes until until probably did get a scratchback
a run for him late with an RBI single, but
they lost three to two. Mogan Gilbert career high ten
(03:54):
drag out's latest pitcher to just throw a gym and
get nothing for it. The ten stragouts, though, we had
to throw ninety seven pitch through six innings, and I
had a feeling that was going to be bad that
he couldn't get through the seventh like his previous like
Wu did, and like Bryce Miller did. Because who's the
seventh inning guy Now it's JT. Charwa. They got him
from Miami, of course at the trade deadline. He had
(04:14):
to enter in the seventh because Gilbert was at ninety
seven pitches. Sargot, he threw a pitch over the plate
to Jose. Jose Siri is renowned across the major leagues
for being a free swinger. Don't throw him a strike,
just don't. Well he did Sirih hit a two run
home or get changed the game. Manners lost three to two.
Houston has lost again at Philadelphia Houston's lost six of
(04:36):
eight suddenly, but the Mariners are still three and a
half games behind the trash Cans in the American League West,
twenty nine games left in the season. Chris, this was
the fourth time in a week the Mariners have lost
on a day Houston lost. And because Houston's playing in
the Central or Eastern time zones, they know. The Mariners
know when they take the field, or at least during
the game, they can see the scoreboard flash up to
(04:58):
the score. Yeah, they're not, they know exactly. They know
the opportunity is right in front of him. Four games
in a week, there's three and a half back.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I was just talking to Ashley about it because she's
very optimistic. Still only three and a half back is well,
But she's right, there's three and a half game, the
three and a half game.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
How many times are they going to blow these chances?
Four games in a week and a half back? If
they win, if if, if, if hill Rigez could even
half of what he should be, they've been ten games
up right now, let's not talk about that. I'm about
to lose five hundred dollars. Yeah you are. You better
take out a loan because that's going down. But we're
going to talk about Julio Rodriguez in the end of
(05:36):
this hour. They blew it. The Mariners. We Chris, it's
not revision, is history. For you and I to talk
about what they should have done with him a few
weeks ago, and they didn't do it. We're going to
talk about that in the third segment. Anyway, those four
times that they've lost, when Houston's lost, they're three and
a half back. Yeah, it could be in first place.
Just in the past week. They could be in first
(05:57):
place and they had the pitching that should have gotten
in there by Now we know know that Luis Castillo,
speaking of pitchers, starts with the Mariners today. They really
do need him to be the ace. And the series
finale against Tampa Bay that's a one ten matinee at
the Yard and Soto. Houston's got one more game at
the Phillies, who've been beating him up the last couple
of nights, and then, as we mentioned, tomorrow, the Mariners
are off and the trash Cans are hosting the Royals,
(06:20):
which the Royals are now in first place. They're tied
with Cleveland, They've rallied. They had one hundred and six
losses last year. They're now in first place heading to September,
tied with Cleveland. Another game with Cleveland today. Follow their formula, yeah,
pitching and hitting mainly the second part hit exactly Bobby. Anyway,
The point is the Mariners could gain a half game
(06:41):
tomorrow the way the Royals are playing. That's in Houston,
but Kansas City at Houston tomorrow while the Mariners are off.
So if the Marriers can get this today and Houston
does what it's been doing in Philadelphia, the league could
be two tomorrow after what the Royals have been doing lately.
So I mean if, if, if, here we go again. Anyway,
that's what's ahead of the Mariners. The Seahawks set their
(07:02):
fifty three man roster by not putting in Chenna and
Wilson in the injured reserve as what was expected. The
way his knee looked, that suggests that they think he's
going to be back before the end of September. If
he was on IR and designated to return, he would
have to miss amendimum of four games. Four games would
be into early October. Passed. That Monday night game against
Detroit on the first day of October. So the fact
(07:24):
they didn't put him on IR suggests that they think
he'll be back before the end of September, which is
good news for Seattle. They cut d s Gridge, We
knew it was going to happen, waived him. He's on
waivers right now. The waiver period just ended. We knew
that was going to happen. It wasn't a place for
him anymore. We talked about that yesterday already. Burns cut.
He must have had some kind of injuries settled. They
(07:44):
didn't talk about. But if you're injured at back of
a cart and then get cut, the Players Association might
want to say something about whether you're going to get
some money or at least some injury protection from that.
Unless Burns is suddenly not hurting. Marquis Blair was cut
in his instant trying to revive his career, and the
Seahawks put Abe Lucas on the physic and a perform list,
(08:06):
which he began training camp on. That was not unexpected.
He has yet to practice, has no shows, shows no
signs of coming back yet from that knee surgery in
the winter. Chris, that's that's a loss.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, starting it's not looking good, and I know you
guys are gonna talk to coach Mike McDonald tomorrow if
I'm not mistaken. So I'm sure someone's going to ask, hey,
coach about a week away from the season update on Abe,
and I'm guessing he will start the season on I
don't know what list, but the list is short, and
I do not see him starting week one. I'll go
(08:38):
all the way up to week four at this juncture,
just because we know nothing other than I don't know
what to say.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
I don't have any answers.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
I've gone back and looked at some of the questions
or some of the responses about ABE, and it's nothing new. Yeah,
it's there's no light at the end of the time,
so it's it's not looking great. But but the good
news is I think they you have George Fant who
can fill in, and I think he's okay. Charles Cross,
as we had with as we talked to Big Walt
(09:09):
last week, he believes this is going to be his
breakout season and he takes the next step, especially going
into his third season. I think the offensive line, again
I mentioned yesterday, I think is better than it was
last season, and I think that's a huge start.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
You go from there. We're not sure because there's so
new Anthony Bradford, a new full time right guard, new
starting center, Connor Williams. Connor Williams's situation is why there
are two undrafted rookies on the Seahawks that made the team. Yesterday,
de Williams we talked about, Hey, he made a punt returner.
I'm going to tell you a story about Dee Williams
and his high school coach in a second. Really made
me feel happy about what I do. And then backup
(09:44):
center Jalen Sendel Jalen Sundel from North Dakota State undrafted
free agents signed the day before training camp began highly
unusual for an undrafted rookie to sign the day before
training camp and then make the team. And he did,
and why well the Connor Williams situation. If Williams is
ready to go for the opener, they may not need
(10:06):
to carry three centers. Sundeal can also play tackle. He
played tackle last year at North Dakota State. Two years
before that he was a center. He had not been
a center, by the way, until his sophomore year of college,
never in high school, but Sundal can play center now
as insurance in case Connor Williams isn't ready for the opener. Remember,
Williams is eight months removed from an ACL and knee reconstruction.
(10:29):
In three hundred pound guys six foot five, it's not
just automatic plug and play eight months after knee reconstruction.
I got to see how this goes. They've been ramping
him up in practice to try to get him on
track to start the opener September eighth against Denver. If
he cannot over with, Timmy will start, and then they
would need a backup center, which is what Sundal can be.
If Connor Williams gets back a little with Timmy becomes
(10:53):
the backup center, and I could see the Seahawks waving
Sundal to put him on the practice squad. I don't
think anyone would claim him, but then again, I didn't
think anyone would claim John Radigan. Reports are out there now.
I'm trying to confirm this. John Radigan the first West
Point Graduate Armies we Seahawks have ever had reportedly claimed
(11:16):
by the Carolina Panthers. Tom PILLERSO had it. It's now
that's multiple reports. Yeah, so I'm just trying to deny it.
At this point, you just yeah. Personally. Of course, those
of you who listened to I'm a West Point graduate,
John and I have had a bond about that. We
talked about West Point, a lot East Barracks and blah
blah blah. Well Carolina, why would they claim him? Well,
(11:37):
they had the number one pick in the waiver wire
because they were the worst team in the league last year,
and their general manager and president is Dan Morgan. Oh
you know where Dan Morgan worked before? Oh, throw it
out there, Greg. He was in the personnel department under
John Schneider that got John Radagan out of Army West
Point two, out of the US Army Lieutenant Service. He
was about to go in to become a Seahawks four
(11:59):
years ago. So Morgan knows him as well as any
GM in the country as in the league. So John
Radagan reportedly claimed by the Carolina Panthers. They were trying
to sneak him through waivers. This is what happens, Chris,
when you last year, only twenty three total players were
claimed in the league out of thirty two teams. So
the odds are when you put a guy on waivers,
you're going to get him back, or at least the
(12:19):
opportunity to pu him on the practice squad with Radigan.
They were trying to waive him to get rid of
his three million dollar contract he signed as a restricted
free agent. They were going to pay him that to
be a backup middle linebacker and a special teams player.
So the idea was release him, get him through waivers,
and then bring him back on a brand new deal
that could be more team friendly than they were mandated
(12:40):
to pay to keep him as a restricted free agent.
I don't know why they didn't do this weeks ago, well,
while everybody else wasn't cutting and signing guys. They could
have waived him in the middle of training camp and
then brought him back a day later on a new contract.
I think he's wondering that right now. He wanted to stay,
but now he's a Carolina Panther because Dan Morgan knew him,
brought him to Seattle. Now he's the Carolina Panthers GM.
(13:03):
I don't think John Schnider was counting on that. Jamie
Sheriff the preseason star. He didn't even get past Carolina,
that's the funny part. But I think the tape spoke
to it. That's a good point, Chris. The first team
that could claim him did They.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Didn't waste no time. I don't think the Seaws would
have got him. They were sixteenth. You have to wait
fifteen teams before you can.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Select the guy that you would want, which John raddyg Well, No,
the way the waiver works is you got to go
through all thirty two teams. You can't claim him again
because if you claim him again, you're inheriting his contract. Yeah,
they would pass because they the one the team that
waived him. Thirty two teams would have had to pass
on him to get him. The waivers thirty one teams,
the Seahawks would have already met it. Yeah, Jamie Sheriff
got claimed by the Carolina Panthers two. This is the
(13:44):
backside of this roster roulette they play of trying to
get guys through waivers and under the practice squad. So
Jamie Sheriff delivering beer three weeks ago in Mississippi, three sacks,
eight quarterback pressures in three preseason games, gone gonna be
on the Carolina Panthers fifty three along with Radigan. I
am not happy, but that's just me go Army beat Navy.
(14:06):
Around the rest of the league, Former top running back
Dalvin Cook is signing to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
The forty nine Ers put number two running back Elijah
Mitchell on injured reserve with a hamstring issue that's probably
gonna end his season. When the Miami Dolphins come to
Loomingfield to play the Seahawks in Week three, they won't
have wide receiver Odell Beckham Junior. He's on the Dolphins
Physically unable to perform list to begin the season. That means,
just like Gabe Lucas, he has to miss the first
(14:28):
four games of the season. And the college football season,
as you may know, begins for our big state teams
on Saturday. The Washington Huskies begin their season Saturday night,
eight o'clock at Husky Stadium against Weavers State. Right here
on ninety three point three KGRFM, Dave Softy Maher and
the Husky Hamps had their pregame show. I think it
starts like at seven am for eight pm games. I'm
like a start at noon. But to your point, I
(14:50):
believe it is. I was exaggerated.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
I'm pretty sure it's a room for an eight pm game.
They be on here all day, four hour pregame is yeah,
they might be, but it's long.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
I will be with my son, My wife and I
are going to Pullman to see my son who's a
koug and the Washington State Cougar start their season Saturday
at noon and Pullman against Portland State. I will be
there for that in ninety three degree Pullman on Saturday afternoon.
When we come back, I'm gonna tell you a quick
d Williams story and then you're gonna hear from the
new Seahawks outside linebacker Travis Gibson. That's next on ninety
(15:24):
three point three KJRFM. Hi, welcome back, thanks for listening.
Greg Bell, the News Tribune and Christopher Kidd with you
as we are every weekday ten am to noon here
on ninety three point three kJ R FM at eleven o'clock,
HU mil and he'll join us to talk about his
(15:45):
hopes for the Seahawks and what he saw, what encouraged
him from the preseason, and what concerns him. Also, I'm
gonna ask him what he thinks the Seahawks future at
quarterback is beyond this season with Gino Smith as the started.
That's at eleven o'clock with Hugh mellon Yesterday. Hey, a
lot of people's dreams were either made. As Mike Durell said,
(16:05):
six round pick from Division two. Finley said, I always
I knew I belonged, and he does. He's here on
the team. He made it, and they were dashed by
a lot of people who have worked their whole lives
for yesterday and then either got wavecut released. It's a
cold business, as we all know. In the NFL. They're
(16:26):
paid well, but they're not guaranteed. And you're spot on
the team for any given year is not guaranteed either,
which is what made Dee Williams so happy yesterday. Chris,
we were talking, we were having press conferences with players,
and I saw I kept turning my shoulder to watch
d Williams come off the field because I wanted to
talk to him and just congratulate him. I wrote the
story for the News Tribune on Friday. I've told the story.
(16:49):
He was going to quit high school football as a
senior because he didn't have any offer to play in college.
His grades were poor. His high school coach, Brian Nelson
at Mary Persons High School in ForSight, Joey, population forty
four hundred, called the junior college coach that he knew,
a junior college coach that he knew in the middle
of nowhere in Mississippi, Deep east central Mississippi, about an
(17:09):
hour and a half east of Jackson, and he said,
take this kid. He deserves to still play football. Nobody
in his family's ever gone to college. Take him, and
the coach did, which speaks to Brian Nelson, the high
school coach's relationships with people. And he stays three years
at the junior college and next year because of COVID,
and the COVID end up being a blessing. The COVID year,
(17:31):
the truncated season ended up being a blessing for Dee
Williams because in that third year he blossomed touchdowns, kick returns, interceptions,
one of the best juco cornerbacks that year in Tennessee.
The University of Tennessee, the volunteers of the Southeastern Conference
gave him a scholarship. He spent two years, set a
punt return average record for the volunteers, also returned kickoffs
(17:54):
first call. He when I talked to him for the story, Chris,
he was as proud to talk about what I'm about
to tell you. As he was about the fact he
was about to make the Seahawks, I asked him about
his communication Studies degree and where he was on that.
He said that he is a online course away. With
the online course he's taken right now. On top of
learning the defense, he's an online course completion away from
(18:16):
getting his Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Arts degree in
Communication Studies from the University of Tennessee. Man was he
proud to talk about that his parents didn't go to college.
His five siblings five total children, four siblings, He's the
youngest of five. None of them went to college. He's
really proud about the fact that he thinks this fall
he's going to get a his bachelor's degree handed to him,
(18:38):
earned by the University of Tennessee. So it was yesterday
that he made the team, as I'd written and predicted
and pretty much hoped for getting to know him and
his story and his coach. His high school coach, Brian Nelson,
texted me. He actually texted me during the game Saturday night.
He was up late watching and he thought that his
guy was almost broke a punt return for a touchdown.
(19:00):
Ten yard return up to the middle, he almost broke
for a touchdown and coach text me he said, I
thought he was going to break that one. Well. Coach
Brian Nelson in forsythe Georgia texted me yesterday and said
he made it, and I congratulated him and everybody in
Forsyth that has been behind Dee Williams. And the coach
Brian Nelson said that he held up his high school
(19:20):
practice yesterday passed four o'clock Eastern so that he could
find out if d Williams made the Seahawks or not.
And once he found out Dee Williams made the Seahawks,
then they started practice and he announced it to his team,
Dee Williams. The Seahawks are going to be off Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday. They practice on Monday, the Labor Day, but Friday,
Saturn and Sunday they're off and de Williams is going
(19:41):
back to forsythe Georgia to go to his high school
team's home game home opener. I don't know if coach
Nelson knows this or not, but he told me this
yesterday and he said he hasn't been back for a
game in four or five years because he was playing
junior college and then the University of Tennessee football, and
now he's at the Seahawks. So he hasn't been back
to a game in his high school for so many years,
and he's going to go back on the occasion of
(20:02):
the week that he made the NFL. Pretty damn neat story.
I write a lot of stories, two or three a
day from July until January, and some of them stand
out and are cool to me. If you're taking the
extra effort to call Brian Nelson was really enriching for
me to get to hear the whole backstory and how
the whole town is behind Forsyth, Georgia is behind Dee Williams.
(20:24):
So congratulations to him, Congratulations to coach Brian Nelson who
got him there. It's just it's cool to hear that story.
We think about contracts and big money, it's just cool
to hear a story like that.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Absolutely, that's as you mentioned, that's something that you're happy
about because you got to talk to de off the field,
not about football, but just his story. And this is
a really big opportunity for him, especially with everything else
he has going on and just to get the news
that he made the team. I know that put a
smile on your face, as it did his family, friends, coaches,
and that's really cool.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
He's cool. He'll be the new punt returner and kick
off returner for the Seahawks. Also new is their new
outside linebacker, Trevis Gibson. He made the team. He made
a team, obviously because they traded for him the day before.
But he's here because one and Chenou Wosu is injured.
He's not on injured reserve. He's not on an injured list,
(21:17):
so and Wosu presumably is okay to come back within
four weeks or so, which would perhaps miss a game
or two. Gibson's on a crash course. Now. He's got
to go ahead and learn Mike McDonald's schemes in a
week and a half and he's already learning him and
he's talking about it. Yesterday he talked about that crash course.
(21:40):
He moved three thousand miles. He was on his way
to breakfast with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday morning when
Trent Jaguars general manager Trent Balkey pulled him out of
the lineup going to eat and told him he's got traded,
got traded three thousand miles to Seattle, see you later,
gotta go. And then the next day, four hours later,
he was digesting Mike McDonald's playbook. You'll hear from Trevin
(22:04):
Gibson in the next segment on all he had to
say about that. But his role is Chris to be
the run stopping, edge setting outside linebacker that Darryl Taylor
was not, which is why they traded d Taylor to
Chicago on Friday. That's what in WISU is. He's the
best in the team at it. It's why boy Mafey
took Darryl Taylor's every down starting job two seasons ago.
(22:25):
But Mafey's not as good as and not as stout
as in WOSU is. We'll see how stout Trevis Gibson.
He's gonna have a chance to be the run stopping,
edge setting outside linebacker. Derek Hall is going to be
the starter if in WISU can't start until Gibson learns
the defense. The second year outside linebacker Derek Hall, who
has such a great preseason, how do you guys feel?
(22:48):
Four nine four guys and Galsen text line four nine,
four to five one. How do you feel about in
Chenna and Wosu in the Seahawks defense now that he
wasn't placed on injured reserve or you relieved? Are you encouraged?
Preseason starter's twelve plays, twelve net yards allowed in two
preseason games that Mike McDonald used them. And we haven't
seen all of, hardly any of the schemes that they're
(23:11):
going to actually employ during the season. Chris, We've talked
about this. I don't think they're ready to get the
full Mike McDonald Ravens defense yet. They don't have the concepts,
the base concepts down yet. I've seen him in practice
have to rerun plays because of missed assignments and misalignments
when offense shifts, for instance, motions where pre snap motion,
(23:33):
where do you hand off that responsibility? They're still getting there,
and McDonald has not been happy in some of the
recent practices on their recognition and assignments, so he has
throttled back his installation of the defense. He's admitted this
publicly that he has gone slower because he wants the
guys to get the base stuff down so he can
then nuance it on top of that and get tricky
(23:55):
and start moving guys around and doing all those things.
He can't do that if they don't have the concepts down.
So what I'm trying to say is the defense they're
gonna have week one against Denver is not the full defense.
It's gonna be way more than we've seen in the preseason. Obviously,
they won't put anything on tape, but they got a
long way to go before they're actually the full Mike
McDonald experience.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
We'll see how it goes. The good news is that
have a soft landing for their first two games, and
then they get a really good test. One of the
most electrifying offenses comes to Seattle and that's the Miami Dolphins,
and then you'll really hopefully, I mean, I don't think
they'll have it all set in and figure it out,
but maybe they'll be more comfortable with motion, because I
guarantee you Mike McDaniel in that offense is gonna be
(24:37):
all motion, all players moving around, and to your point
that they're screwing it up in practice making those mistakes,
you gotta be ready for it because Miami's gonna do
it with Tyreek Hill, with the running back rahe Moster,
Devin A. Chain, you name it, They're gonna have guys
in motion trying to confuse the defense, and with Mike
trying is what Mike tries to do is try to
confuse the offense.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
You don't know who we're in.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
So it's gonna be a check match between an offensive
coordinator and a defensive Cordner who is now the Seahawks
head coach. So that'll be a really great test, not
that it won't be against the Broncos and Pages, but
come on, let's be real. Unless Bo Nicks is the
next coming of and a great quarterback, which I don't
foresee at this juncture in time, I think we'll have
to see the bigger test when they play the Dolphins
(25:19):
in Week three.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
I don't think the Seahawks are good enough to say, well,
this is a win, this is a win, But it
would behoove them to beat bon Knicks and Drake May
and or the week too. They can say this is
a win this. It would behoove them to win those
games because as you mentioned, Miami comes here week three,
and then week four they go Monday nighty.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Detroit, best offense in the best offensive line. Excuse it
might be a Super Bowl team this year, they were
close to being one. Last year they could have should
have won that game in San Francisco in the NFC
title game.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
So that's Week four. So you got Miami Detroit back
to back, and then you have San Francisco two weeks
later at home on a Thursday night on a short
rest after the Giants home game. So if you're not
two and zero, you're going to be two and two
in a pretty quick hurry, facing San Francisco, New York,
then San Francisco within four days. So yeah, it would
behoove the Seahawks to win those first two games. Coming up,
(26:08):
you'll hear from Travis Gibson. We're gonna talk about Julia Rodriguez.
We're going to talk to Hugh Millen at eleven o'clock
and talk about the Seahawks and what he's seen so
far of the preseason that encourages or discourages him for
the regular season. All that's coming up next ninety three
point three KJRFM. Hi, welcome back, Greg Bell of the News,
(26:32):
Trevann and Christopher Kidd with you in ninety three point
three KJRFM. Yesterday we heard from Trevis Gibson. He's the
new outside linebacker for the Seahawks, who just arrived from
Jacksonville in a trade on Monday. Tuesday was his first
day of practice. Here's what he's head about, learning Mike
McDonald's new system and all else that's involved in moving
three thousand miles on no notice.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Hanging on now, it's a lot more cool little Florida.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Wait, do you like that?
Speaker 1 (27:02):
I love it? I love it. Yeah, keep a couple of.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Pounds on me.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
What was your reaction to the trade? Uh, you know,
I was a little.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Surprised, but you know, when life comes with you know, uh,
twists and turns, you gotta roll with the punchers. And
you know, I think in my my outlook on life
as what would life be if it was all candy
and nuts? You know, So you look, you look for
the positive and the negative. And you know, I'm not
saying this is negative, but it's a change and I'm
looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
From what you've seen so far. What's the challenge of
learning this defense on the flyot?
Speaker 3 (27:33):
You know, it's a it's a nice decent playbook, but
you know that's gonna it's gonna come with time and patience.
Got a couple of weeks before our first game, which
is a blessing, and uh, it's just gonna be grind out,
you know, just grind it out and figure out everything
I need to know, the meat and potatoes and go
from there.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
How you describe your game that fans you are familiar.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
With, twitchy, aggressive, fast, Uh, relentless, you know, back against
the wall, man, it's I leave it all after on
the field every play.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Okay for what you see as a playdoff, so far
as that feed into what you feel like you're insurance
since goes off again?
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Yeah, you know from practice today, being on the edge
and seeing the way that we run things and how
we rush. You know, I think I'm going mold in
perfectly to the scheme. You know, I'm looking forward to it.
I'm excited. You know. I'm with a our standing front
defensive line, and you know we got veg Draymond Jones,
we got young guys, Biron Murphy.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
You know, it's you got top and bottom.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
So it'll be exciting to be able to get in
the mix and learn from young and older guys.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
From what you can tell, is it more like Chicago
use you or maybe Mark Jacksonville. I would say more
like Chicago.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
More outside linebacker, you know, not as much inside, not
playing four eye that much. But you know, I think
the thing that I love most is I can tell
that they're letting their guys go man rush and play physical,
play fast, you know, disruptive. I think that's something that
plays into my scheme.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
What are your first impressions of Michael Donald Man?
Speaker 3 (29:01):
Great guy, works hard. I can tell that he doesn't
let up on pressure, which is something that you always want.
And you know, from that, just from that standpoint a loan,
you know, you confirm that you're not wasting your time,
you know, just out here, you know, playing the play,
you're actually playing to win. And I know that's the
that's an environment that the Sea Hawks bring.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
You have the seven sax season, I think a few
years ago. Is there they get I guess getting back
to that bubble. Is there is there something that needs
to happen or is it just kind of the defense
or win.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
I guess nah, you know, nothing necessarily that needs to happen. Man,
I just need to work hard, continue to work hard,
you know, continue to say my prayers, continue to show
up every day, you know, eventually things will crack open.
You know. It's like I said, life is about up
and downs, you know, so looking forward to getting my
career back on track, looking forward to playing with these guys,
(29:50):
you know, looking forward to the city. It's it's a
new chapter that I'm excited about.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Man, how'd you find out about what you're uh?
Speaker 3 (29:58):
On the way to breakfast? On the way to break
physical got pulled over to the side, you know, Trent
gave me the news, and you know it wasn't I
think at this point in my life, in my career,
you know, it's no, it's no going back. I don't
have time to mope or be sad or be frustrated
about the decisions that come into my life. You know,
it's just getting back up fighting again and keep on fighting.
(30:20):
You know, who would I be if I gave up?
Speaker 1 (30:22):
What's the biggest challenge personally to move three thousand miles
at this point in an NFL year? Biggest challenge?
Speaker 3 (30:30):
You know? I don't, man, I'm be honest, I don't.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Mean all that.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Yeah, Well, I got a pregnant and pregnant girlfriend, so
I had to make sure she could come before it
was too late for her. To be able to fly.
That was the main thing she's doing October. So she
has about yeah, yeah, it's coming down to dram Man.
Yeah exactly that that would have that would have took
a toll. But yeah, both cars are still in Jacksonville.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Man.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
But right now, I'm just worried about playing football, worried
about taking advantage of these next two weeks, the time
that I do have before the real race starts, and
you know, just leaving it all out there, no regrets.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
The language game, I'm trying to tea what does that
look like here?
Speaker 3 (31:12):
To me? That looks like in double double digit sex season.
You know, I know I'm capable of it. I got
the seven and five four stumbles on playing half of
the year, so you know, I'm not gonna let anybody
put a ceiling on me. And to me, the skies
and limit.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
I believes it's clear your past rusher from your background.
The position here also asks for setting the edge in
the run and coverage. Can you talk a little bit
about those parts of your game?
Speaker 3 (31:38):
You know, I believe you gotta set the run or
you got to stop the run in order to get
to the past. So there's no cutting edges in this league,
there's no cutting edges of life.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
I think we all know that.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
So I can't expect to just be on the field
third down without putting any work in on first and second.
So I take pride in that part of my game.
When it comes to pass rush, man, I think that's
where it's it's relentless, relentless up for pinning my ears back,
you know, chasing everything I've dreamed. Honestly, there's not too
much pressure on myself. It's playing a free you know,
and not be a stress of ten stuff. And uh,
(32:09):
I think that's when I get the best results from myself.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
That's Trevis Gibson. He's gonna be on the field as
an outside linebacker setting the edge against the run as
much as pass rushing. I'm always interested to hear that, Okay,
where's your stuff? And the fact he's got an eight
month pregnant girlfriend that he's got to move across the
country and he's got to worry aout whether she can
get on a flight or not. That's all real world stuff. Yeah,
they're highly paid, but they're they've got stuff too. We
(32:37):
all got stuff, and be told you got to move
your whole life three thousand miles in a couple hours.
That's interesting to hear how people deal with that, and
he was taking it in stride. It's the fourth team
in twelve months for Trevis Gibson, so he's getting used
to it. Up next, we're gonna talk to Hugh Mellen.
We're gonna talk to him about what he was encouraged
by in the Seahawks preseason, what he might be worried about,
(32:59):
and what he would do a quarterback beyond twenty twenty four.
Hugh Millin up next on ninety three point three kJ
