Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yep, the Manners are doing again sucking to thing because
they wanted Houston last night to gain a half game
in the wildcard standings. Bryce Miller just tremendous last night.
Seven scoreless innings, just two hits aloud in that Sardine
Canniba Ballpark down there in Houston. Trash Cans had the
tying run on base, second and third, one out in
the bottom of the seventh and two nothing Mariner lead
(00:22):
Miller got a strikeout for the second out. Then Bryce
Miller did this to Jeremy Panya trying to finish the seventh.
They struck it out. Yeah, Aaron Goldsmith given the requisite
enthusiasm for that, because that was an escape job. The
final score six to one Mariners because they tacked on
(00:44):
four runs after that. But at that moment Payna had
a chance to tie the game and knock Bryce Miller
out of it, Miller mowed him down. Really interesting last
night to watch how Bryce Miller started the game with
fastballs and then went off speed and break making pitches
the rest of the way, and in the last round
through the order, the Astros were just swinging at what
(01:06):
they thought were hard fastball pitches that they'd seen earlier
in the game. He totally mixed it up on him
later in the game in a masterful, masterful job. Logan
Gilbert's got to do it tonight. Framer Valdez who used
to own the Mariners and now he's struggled the last
couple of years. So yeah, it's gotten to him. But
it's Logan Gilbert his chance to match what Bryce Miller
(01:26):
did tonight to keep the Mariners slim slim slim playoff
hopes alive. Here's what they got there, game and a
half behind Detroit and Kansas City for the final playoff
spot in the America League, five games left. They still
really need to make up two games two full games
in the last five because they don't have any tiebreakers
with Detroit, Kansas City or Minnesota, the three teams they're
competing for for the wild card spots. There are four
(01:47):
games behind Houston for the AO West title, hardly meant
worth mentioning yet five games left, but they owned the
season tiebreaker over the trash Cans by the virtue that
win last night. So if Clogan Gilbert can do what
Bryce Miller did, which he has done in the past,
and they can get the sweep. By winning tomorrow, they've
got the tie break there and they'd be two games behind.
(02:10):
I'm here we go With's again. They'd be two games
behind Houston with three to go, and if they can tie,
they play Oakland at home to finish the season. The marriage.
Do you know where Houston goes to Cleveland? A division champion?
Now Cleveland has something to play for for seeding, but
they already have the division clinched. But just in terms
of quality of a team that Houston has to play
(02:31):
to finish the season, it's not inconceivable that they could
lose two of three at Cleveland. If the Mariners can
take care of Oakland at home, here will go to
F's again. That's crazy.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
If at Oakland, come on, that doesn't even sound right, right,
But we've seen this before, right.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
You have to be honest. Yeah, we see the Angels. Yeah,
they go back. You could circle like two games out
of all those series in the last two months and
say if they had just won that game. Anyway, let's
hope we're still talk like this tomorrow night. At this time,
the Seahawks are getting their key outside linebacker back, at
least for practice. Coach Mike McDonald said yesterday Chennon wolfsh
(03:07):
will practice this week. That's the first time he's been
on the field since the sprain media Colladoral Ligan in
his knee one month ago today getting cut blocked by
Cleveland's wiat Teller in the final preseason game, McDonald said
in Wolsa, the team's best sack man and the best
edgesetter against the run, is going to get some team
drills in practice this week that will determine if he
plays for the Seahawks Monday night at Detroit. Man did
(03:28):
they need him? That was the news of the day
yesterday and it came very late in the press conference.
But the fact that new Wolsa is going to be
on the field in team drills to determine whether he
can play against Detroit, that's a big deal. Of course,
if the Seahawks had thought he was going to be
out the four games, which the fourth game is in
Detroit mon tonight, they would have just put him on
injured reserved to start the season and save the roster spot.
(03:50):
So the hope was he'd be back for this game,
and they're going to try to see start to get
practice on Wednesday. If he can be back for that.
So how the Seahawks practice schedule is going to work
this week Thursday, normal, Friday, a little bit earlier practice
Friday Saturday as well, and then they leave Saturday afternoon
for Detroit. They'll spend Saturday night there. Sunday will be
a walk through and very light as they normally do
(04:12):
a day before game and in the game on Monday night.
Come back players off Tuesday, and then Wednesday they hit
it right into the next week for the Giants. At
home game. We talked about Jayden Daniels man he looked
like he won the Heisman Trophy in the NFL last
night rookie quarterback lsu first Monday Night stage, he outplayed
Joe Burrow on Burrow's home field. He completed twenty one
(04:34):
of twenty three passes. NFL next Gen Stats says that
the most improbable touchdown pass of the young season to
Terry McLaurin. That was the highest completion percentage for a
rookie quarterback in a game in NFL history, the league
said after the game. Daniels also ran for a thirty
nine yard touchdown. It was his third career game Washington
(04:55):
thirty eight, Cincinnati thirty three to go to two to
one for the Commanders and the dan Quinns. Bengals are
owing three. I know you're gonna ask Jorry Epstein about
that when we talked to her.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Oh oh, man, I guess they'll be one and three
next week, right the way the Panthers your Panthers, Hey,
I just picked them one week because I figured, you
know what red rifle can handle business. I don't know
if he can do it again, especially with a team
that desperate. I don't know if death was the word.
They go three, They you can't go.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
On for since nineteen seventy nine. We're gonna bring this
up with Jorey at eleven. Since nineteen seventy nine, do
you know how many oh and three teams have rally
to make the playoffs? Is it two? Seven? Seven teams?
That's a good guess, though, seven teams and what forty
fifty forty five years have gone from owing three to
the playoffs. That's what the Bengals are trying to do.
(05:45):
Last night's Bengals Commander's game was the first time since
nineteen forty pre World War Two, that an NFL game
featured no punts and no turnovers. Wow. Buffalo smashed Jackson
Villan oceh Orchard Park, New York, forty seven to ten
to become the fifth NFL team to three and zero.
Jaguars are zero and three. They've scored just twenty three
(06:07):
points in the last ten quarters. Doug Peterson's offense has stuck.
So now it's the Vikings and Seahawks in the NFC,
the Steelers, Chiefs, Bills in the AFC. Who are the
remaining undefeated teams? Chuck Pyle asked me this morning if
I consider the Seahawks on par with the Chiefs, I
had to laugh. Yet, No, no, and no, they won't
(06:28):
be on part of the Chiefs until they beat him
in the Super Bowl in February, if it ever came
to that. Hall of Fame. Quarterback Brett Farb disclosed during
a congressional heiring this morning that he has recently been
diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, the degenerative nervous system disorder. He
was speaking before the House Ways and Means Committee at
the US Capitol. Farr was talking about a company that
(06:48):
makes a concussion drug that received two million dollars in
public government funding. Farv was the top investor in the Company.
The three and one Washington Huskies in college football play
their first road game in the Big Ten Friday, five pm.
You know, at their neighborhood rival Rutgers in New Jersey,
right down the road. One pm pre game show Friday
(07:11):
with Dave sophymar and the Husky Hawnks here on ninety
three point three KJRFM. The four to oh Washington State
Cougars play at two to one twenty fifth rank Boise
State seven pm Saturday on the Blue Turf and Idaho
Now They're Crazy Day. In college athletics, Washington State and
Oregon State continue to rebuild the PAC twelve. Utah State
is going to be the latest Mountain West team that's
(07:31):
going to become the seventh member of the remade PAC twelve.
ESPN reports. So it's going to be Utah State, Boise State,
San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State, all from the
Mountain West joining Washington State and Oregon State. That's seven.
They need to get to eight by twenty twenty six
to be a viable league and for Oregon State and
Washington State to collect twenty million dollars from the rest
(07:51):
of the PAC twelve. That deserted them last year. This
is after the PAC twelve wanted to get Memphis two
Lane in South Florida out of the America Athletic Association.
But yesterday those schools decided they're going to stay in
the American that's the league. Army football is about to
win the first year in the league. By the way,
undefeated Army. You know, undefeated Army and Navy are both
undefeated first time since nineteen forty five. They've been four
(08:14):
to oh at the same time forty five. They had
a few other things to worry about in nineteen forty
five than me and four to oh in collage football,
like World War Two. A report Monday said Gonzaga is
going to be the next in the PAC twelve and
every sport but footbo of course they don't have football,
But the Zag's athletic director Chris Stannerfer told The Spokesman
Review that report was not accurate and that the Zags
(08:35):
are not leaving the West Coast Conference for the Pack
to at least not yet. What could be next for
the PAC twelve unl e as I said, they got
to get to eight teams. It's laudable to say the
least that right in the middle of the college football season,
they are going after schools. I mean, you can say
what you want about it being hypocritical. Yes, Washington State
(08:56):
got left behind when Washington Oregon left and Mothers ten
poached and Big twelve poach the Big the Pac twelve. Yes,
acc but now they have to survive. They can't sit
we talk about this, Chris, Your school can't just sit
back and say, do you woe was us? And then
everybody else gets a league and when the music stops,
there's no chair to sit in for washingt State Oregon.
Say so, they're doing what they gotta do, and they've
(09:18):
got seven schools going on eight. Back to the Storm.
They must win a night, as I said, Game two
of the WMA first round series at the defending champion
in Las Vegas Stations. If they win to Night, the
Storm would force a deciding game three Thursday night at
Climate Pledge Arena. Storm went zero for twelve in the
field in the fourth quarter Sunday and lost the lead
and the game. Game one at Las Vegas and the Kraken.
Their second preseason game is tonight at Vancouver. That's seven PM,
(09:42):
going to be aired on our sister station nine fifty
kJ f AM excuse me with Everett Fitzhew of course
on the call as always Seahawks coach. Back to Seahawks
Retten yesterday, what I learned after the show, I went
down and Mike McDonald's day after press conference. He said,
there's there's nothing new to report in the severity the
rib injury, defensive been Leonard Williams got in the winner
(10:04):
for Miami Sunday or top proky defensive tackle Byron Murphy's
hamstring injury from that game. Chris, we were talking before
the show started, how important those two guys could be
the most treat game.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Yeah, Detroit game, that's you need everyone healthy. And I
know that's not logical. It's because it's football. People get
banged up. But in this scenario, team that's three or
zero looking to pretty much be the second best team
in the NFC behind I would say the Lions and
the Miami, the Miami, the Minnesota Vikings. This is a
huge opportunity for the Seahawks to really put themselves on
(10:36):
the map as one of those top innotive teams. If
they can go out on the road and beat a
really good Detroit Lions team, who's wants to do the
same thing. Run the football, set it up, set up
the path with the run with David Montgomery and Jamier Gibbs.
Two dudes that when they get the ball, one's gonna
run you over, another one's electric. Kind of remind me
of what Antonio Gibson brought with the Patriots. Raman J.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Stevenson go back.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Seaowk did a really good job of containing him, but
then uh oh, Antonio Gibson, he was the one that
kind of got away. So they bring that same type
of dynamic, a heavy hammer and a guy that can
get out and do stuff catching and in the run
game as well. So if they don't have Leonard An Byron,
as you've talked about earlier in the season, they are
(11:21):
pretty thin down there in the trenches. And you lose
those two guys, now you're wondering, Okay, who's gonna step
up big And we talked about it, They're gonna have
to find other ways of getting after golf and slowing
on the run, which is gonna be probably blitzing.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Yeah. And McDonald's at the point now where he feels
confident enough in riequoling and Devin Witherspoon and Trey Brown
and his safeties Love and Rayshawn Jenkins to play a
lot of man or to blitz and not to give
those guys help in the back. This is a dangerous
team to do that against Jameson Williams. I'm honor Saint Brown.
(11:56):
They have weapons for sure. The tight end who has
killed him even before LAPORTI. Yeah, that tider Hawkinson that
went to Minnesota used to kill him in Detroit. The
guy on the spot in the run defense remains Jonathan Hankins,
who was brilliant. I mentioned this yesterday. He only got
three tackles on the stat sheeet, But man, was he good,
especially in the second half.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I'm twenty minutes into the film and he's popped out
ninety seven?
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Was he not? Everywhere He's beating double teams. Yes, he's
crushing dudes in the backfield. Guys, the play is supposed
to go to his hole, and He's players have to
go around him, and by the time it goes around him,
that's when Dodson and friends come to pursue. He was fantastic.
He played fifty seven percent of the snaps and that's
a lot for him. It was. He only played seventeen
(12:42):
snaps in the opener against Denver and I went up
to him after the game and he chuckled. He goes, yeah,
that's not gonna happen again, because he knew New England
was coming at him, and then he knew Miami would
have at least some semblance of a run game, And yeah,
he is gonna be Can he play more than fifty
seven percent of the snaps because if Murphy, even if
Murphy plays and he's in, he's gonna Hankins's gonna have
(13:02):
to take some of that load. Mike Morris took a
lot of that load against the Dolphins, played well, different,
tied to a player, came up as a defensive end,
a post defensive end for Michigan. So he's a different
kind of player than Hankins. Who's the true nos the
one truth, the only true nose they have on the roster.
That's it. That's how big he's going to be on
Monday Night. And yeah, if if the thirty two year
(13:25):
old and his twelve NFL season is up for the
task of playing more than fifty seven percent of the snaps,
he's a good Even if he's not He's gonna be
a big factor on Monday Night. Any news on Goutel No, now,
good question. He had a injury settlement in the preseason.
Normally in the NFL, the preseason or excuse me, the
injury settlements last six weeks minimum. How it works is
(13:46):
they give you a check and say, okay, we'll wave
you off the injured list. You can't sign with any
other team, even if you're cleared medically, you can't sign
with any other team for a minimum of six weeks.
That's traditionally what an injury settlement's terms are six weeks
to be right about now or at the end of
the after the Detroit game, because it was about a
week or two before the end of the preseason that
(14:06):
they put gotew Waved injured and then released him from it.
He is absolutely a possibility. They know him, he's local.
I would not be surprised if Macotell comes back within
the next couple of weeks, to be at least the
backup nose tackle they've used Byron Murphy. It knows a
little more in the during the regular season than he
did in the preseason because they've had to But yeah,
(14:27):
if Murphy's not there. Jonathan Hankins could be the most valuable,
least most important player in that defense. And that's saying
some with the defensive players that the Seahawks have, and
of course it's important for the pass rush to continue
the rate of pressure that it's had in the first
three games. Boy, mafe Derek Hall. If Nuolsa can come back, Man,
(14:48):
he's the best front seven player they have. Really he
really is. He can. He's the quintessential Mike McDonald outside linebacker,
sets the edge and gets after the passer. Isn't just
tunnel focused on getting up the field to the quarterback
like Daryl Taylor was. That's where Daryl Taylor's gone and
traded to Chicago. He couldn't play the way Mike McDonald
demands outside linebackers won must UoS who is and man,
(15:10):
he would be a tremendous help. It's not the defensive
struggled without him. But they've got Derek Hall and then
Trevis Gibson getting more reps. Those are guys in featured
roles that we're not supposed to be there and wos
who can take the load off of them, And he
would be a huge ad. We'll see, We'll start. I'll
start noticing tomorrow at practice found Neoso looks and what
(15:31):
his chances might be to play on Monday night. Coming
up next coach Mike McDonald three and zho to begin
his first head coaching job at any level. Seahawks already
two games ahead of everyone else in the NFC West,
But the new coach is not even close to satisfied.
He made that clear yesterday. You'll hear him next on
ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Mile from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Now back to the Great Bell Show with Christopher Kidd
on your Home for the Huskies and the Cruck in
Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Welcome back to the show, Greg Bell the News Tribune
with Christopher Kids. We are every weekday ten to noon
on ninety three point three kjr FM. NFL Next Gen
Stats sent me a note this morning that said the
DK Metcalfs touchdown catch seventy one yards catch and run
against Miami twenty point eight two seconds is what he
ran from reading my O. Miles problem. That's right, Yeah,
(16:37):
Miles prob. They have trackers on there the underside of
their uniforms. That track all that it's the thirteenth fastest,
the fastest of Week three, and the thirteenth fastest by
a ball carrier this season, twenty point eight two miles
an hour, running faster than you're allowed to drive a
car through most city streets anymore.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
And Gino under throw one he did just a little bit,
but he also didn't step into him. My man threw
fifty yards without stepping into the throat. That's pretty impressive,
that's right.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
And the head fake double move by Metcalf put the
safety in a beautiful I mean just one step one
head fake. Really, I faint.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Sold the in route dig slam whatever you want to
call it, and the safety was like, I'm there.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Right after the game, DK Metcalf and you know Smith
described how they knew in too high coverage and that
particular defensive set that the safeties tend to bite on
any any sign of a short in route any and
that's head fake was any and that Ryan Grubb has
had them working on that since training camp. Again, Ryan Grubb,
(17:45):
what he's best at and how he gets the downfield
throws to go was so wide open. He put safeties
in a box. He puts them in a bind and
makes them have to make a choice. Layered routes and
safeties get often confused or picked the wrong choice. It's
all in college football with Washington all the time. We've
seen it now two weeks in a row, New England
did it. Duger did it for New England when he
(18:07):
went with the end route on Zach Charbonay split out
outside left wider of Metcalf. Metcalf simply ran straight down
the seam and Dugger is like, he's never saw the
six to four wide receiver. We're in number fourteen. And
then the same thing happened in Miami. He put the
safety in the decision box and the decision was wrong
and a touchdown. That's the value of Ryan Grubb. Not
(18:28):
that every NFL OFFENSI quarter can't do that, but they
don't always do that. I mean, how many times before
this year have we seen DK Metcalf run Scott free
down the middle of the field.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
It's very rare because pressure on the quarterback plays a role.
And yeah, it's usually you're not leaving the best player
in the biggest naked for a touchdown. It's happened twice
in two weeks, but that's just a great play, solid
execution from the offensive line, giving you know, the time
because I believe it was maybe Week one he was
(19:00):
it would have been a touchdown.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
I'll just leave it at that. But second play the game, Yeah,
but here by twenty yards and Connor Williams got beat
and the defender got into Gino Smith's legs and he
couldn't throw it. And he threw a twenty yards under
thrown in the middle of the field where nobody but.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Oh, actually, you know what. He had another one against
the Patriots as well. Yes, he did metcalf on a
post route. Yeah, and it was underthrown because they're in
the rest of yep. And Jabrill Peppers I believe made
the play on it. That's it's so underthrown. But had
he stepped into it and had time, another touchdown for TK.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Mike McDonald I mentioned three and ohero to begin his
first head coaching job at any level. He's never been
a head coach, not at high school in Georgia, not
a GA and assistant at the University of Georgia or
Baltimore Ravens or University of Michigan, where is a defensive coordinator. Yesterday,
though he started his press conference with us and Rent
and by making it absolutely clear that he is not
at all satisfied with being two games up in the
(19:53):
NFC West already.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
I think the tape is going to tell the story.
I mean, we're in a great position where we've done
enough to win each game that we've played. There's a
lot of great stuff on tape, but we're also at
the beginning stages of this team and who we're going
to become, and the guys know that very clear when
you watch the tape. Where we need to improve and
there's a great opportunity for us to improve. I think
the message is, let's take advantage of this opportunity that
(20:16):
we have. We have the opportunity to learn so much
about who we are, how we're going to grow our
operation throughout the week, how do we prepare we can
be so much better. Again, it's so early in the season.
We're in a great position. Obviously, it's way better than
the opposite, and so we're excited about that. But there's
a sense of urgency too on where this football team
needs to go.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
That's Mike McDonald yesterday to us about being the staffs
being three and zero. He's made the point a couple times.
He did again yesterday that the coaching staff still learning
each other on how Ryan Grubb likes to call offense,
or how Scott Huff's relation to Ryan Grubb's game plan
on the offensive line, and Aiden Dirty in the defense,
(20:56):
and Leslie Frasier as this overarching sage role that he has,
and how involved Fraser we might get or might not
get depending on the situation. They're learning a ton about
each other and that's going to go on and on.
It's just starting. As he said, Scott Hoffe told me
that after practice on Thursday, he goes, you know, we're
still learning each other as assistant coaches and as a
(21:16):
coaching staff, and we're learning what Mike McDonald wants and
we have to pretty much to paraphrasing, we've still learning
how to get our own act together, working with each
other to get it and present it to the players.
All of this is to say, is what a stage
to be learning while three and oh, I mean they
could easily, depending on how the schedule fell, you could
be learning these things oh and three and they'd be
(21:39):
all kinds of nervousness and panic and maybe distrust by
some of the players of Hey, this stuff's not working.
Who are these cats? These coaches don't know what they're doing.
They're three and oh and so the buying and the
trust is through the roof right now. Man, these guys know,
they know exactly what they're doing. They got this thing licked.
Tho's this thirty seven year old coach, first time younga's
coach in the league. Everything he does turns the gold.
(22:02):
Now it's full's gold in many ways because of who
they played so far. But the point is the players,
the trust, the belief man. You can't have more buy
in than they have right now. Mike McDonald's like Vince
Lombardi to them, especially the younger players. So the buy
in the trust factor is really high right now. But
the point is that they're still so new, they're still
(22:23):
learning each other, including on the coaching staff. Okay, so
what else is why Mike McDonald's not satisfied. Well, we're
going to talk about the offensive line again, because that's
every day you could talk about that and still a problem.
And we'll talk about that and then the next segment
in detail, including Abe Lucas and the latest that Mike
McDonald's said about that but even the defense is still inconsistent.
(22:45):
He said that there are still gaps in there linking
between the second level, third level, and the defensive line.
That there are still open receivers and open plays and
open routes and open running lanes that should not be
because sometimes of communication issues. I'm in the noise at Lumenfield.
I've noticed a couple times Terrell dots and running ten
and fifteen yards behind him to personally courier play calls
(23:08):
to the safeties and the defensive backs. He didn't have
time to do that every play, but he couldn't communicate.
He sometimes uses hand signals, dots and still learning the
best way to convey the changes and the things that
McDonald wants his defensive to do in alignment before the snap.
We talked about the injuries, the fact now the defensive
line has Leonard Williams and potentially Byron Murphy not playing
(23:29):
in Detroit. We'll learn more about that in the coming days.
On their playing status, Jonathan Hankins still new to Seattle,
playing increasing reps. Mike Morris played more reps than he's
ever played on Sunday against Miami on the defensive line,
Derek Hall Derek Hall had two more sacks on Sunday.
He's got three and three games. He was a bit
(23:52):
player last year as the rookie. They only used him
twenty six percent of the time in defensive snaps. Pete
carrolln and staff just basically forgot about it or didn't
want to use them and they use Darryl Taylor, for instance, instead.
More well, now Derek Hall is a huge player on
this defense. Jerome Baker's hamstring issue means that Tyree Knight
is playing and starting as a fourth round draft pick.
(24:14):
They didn't plan on that. They didn't think Tyree Knight
was going to be a middle of the defense starter.
Every snap, they had Drake Thomas come in and play
about a third of the snaps and Tyree Knight played
two thirds. And McDonald said yesterday that Drake Thomas usually
a special teams player, Drake Thomas has basically taken John
Radigan's place on the roster as a special team's middle
linebacker inside linebacker. They had Drake Thomas playing weekside linebacker
(24:36):
next to Dotson, and McDonald said that perhaps Thomas has
earned more playing time. Of course, he says that about
Christian Hayes too, and that didn't do him much good.
But at least he has these the direct play caller
and decider on defense, so if he thinks Drake Thomas
should get more time, he will. But Hankins, for instance,
(24:56):
nose tackle. Mike McDonald said of him, that's why we
brought him here to play games like that at Miami game.
So we're going to need another big game out of
him this week against Detroit. Hankins on the first and
goal for Miami. I mentioned it yesterday. You go back
and look at the tape again. First three plays of
that first and goal at the fourth in the fourth quarter,
Hankins blew all three of them up. Beat a double
(25:18):
team on a first and goal, second and goal, was
standing in the hole when they tried to block him,
and the hat forced to bounce out into his teammates.
Third down, he actually had a pass rush into the
face of the quarterback up the middle because he beat
the center of the snap. And then on fourth down,
Tim Boyle threw a pass pretty much into the stands
that nobody had a chance to catch and they get
(25:38):
the goal line stand But Hankins was tremendous. As we
talked about it in the previous segment and McDonald said
he's going to have to do it again against Detroit.
Then he went McDonald pointed to the New England game.
He said, the New England game not to our standard,
but we bowed up and we needed to. This pass
game against Miami not consistent enough for him. He's not
(26:01):
at all satisfied with giving up one hundred and eighty
five yards rushing to the Patriots and winning in overtime
and then twenty four to three over Miami. He wants
that the level off into more consistency. So he's exacting, man,
he is very exacting. Mike McDonald does not waiver on that.
He's got standards and you are to achieve them. And
(26:22):
he hasn't cared the three and oh, he hasn't cared.
I mean, like he said, it's a lot better than
the opposite. But he is far from satisfied. And I
think his players notice that. And there's an intent to
come out publicly the very first comment of your press
conference a day after a twenty four to three winn
and say we're not satisfied and there's a lot to fix.
There's definitely a message to send to his locker room.
So Chris coming up next. We're going to talk about
(26:45):
your favorite subject, the offensive line, Christian Hanks, what does
he got to do to play? What are their options?
And the latest on Abe Lucas. That's what Mike McDonald
had to say yesterday. We'll tell you what he said
and discuss the offensive line, the problem issue of the
three and o Seahawks. That's next on ninety three point

feedback Danny O'Neil. You know him. He's a guest at
one o'clock on Fridays with Ian Ferness. Every week. He's
for Seattle Times, Seattle PI writer, Seattle Times beat writer,
local radio host here in Seattle. Well, he's now a
guest columnist for my paper, the News Tribune, and we
have him chime in usually once a week or so
(29:14):
with pretty much Seahawks, although it's been Mariners as well.
He writes that it's maybe time to give Seahawks general
manager John Schneider credit for avoiding bad decisions at quarterback.
Daniel'neal on The News Tribune Today writes twice now Schneider
has had to find a successor to someone who is
legitimate franchise quarterback, first, moving on from Matt Hasselbick in
(29:35):
twenty eleven and Russell Wilson in twenty twenty two. In
each case, he's moved through a series of options that
many considered underwhelming, only to have surprising success blossom at
every point that people marveled how incredibly lucky Seattle got.
To a certain extent, that's true, Seattle was fortunate to
draft a franchise quarterback in the third round as it
did when it drafted Wilson and Smith. You know, Smith's
(29:56):
second act as an NFL starter has better than anyone
had a right to expect. But at a certain point
it stops being luck a coincidence, and under Schneider, Seattle
has taken a different path than other teams when it
comes to finding long term quarterbacks. Instead of using a
top ten picker making a significant trade, Schneider has limited
just how much he bets on his ability to accurately
forecast the future of a quarterback. He's accepted the inheritance
(30:18):
certainty and evaluating the position and decided he's not going
to go all in or on a hope for a hunch,
not even when others around the league of cracking jokes
at a quarterback competition between Gino Smith and Drew Locke
a couple of years ago. We've talked quite a bit here,
and we've made a lot in the city about the
fact that John Schnyder's drafted only two quarterbacks in fifteen years,
Russell Wilson, and nobody in town can name the other one.
(30:41):
Do you remember who it is? Fortnight four five one?
Can you remember the other quarterback? As that thi've drafted
on the Telemordue tax line. Do you agree that John
Schneider has done the right thing at quarterback? Not trading up,
not using a top pick for on one. They could
have used one last year when they were picking fifth,
they picked Devin Witherspoon Instead. They didn't trade up this
year when they were in the middle of the first
(31:01):
round to get one of the quarterbacks that went Six
of them went in the top twelve. You agree with
Danny O'Neale on the News Tribute today about that that
John Schneider deserves credit for how he's handled the quarterback position.
Four nine, four to five one and tell them we'll
do text on We'll readback your text at eleven thirty.
The offensive line Anthony Bradford six penalties that is second
(31:22):
most in the NFL. That's twice as many as anybody
else on the Seahawks. Through three games. He allowed a
sack on Sunday. He's allowed a sack in each game.
He ruined two drives, one with a holding penalty, one
with a sack allowed. The holding penalty forced a excuse me,
the sack forced a fifty seven yard field goal in
the first drive. Instead of a potential first down at
(31:43):
the Miami thirty yard line. Charles Cross beating three times
at left tackle against Miami in pass RUSS situation, incuting
in the ends on the cause Genos Smith's first interception
of Miami's only points. At right guard, Christianhanes didn't play
at all. He had played a week. He played one
series in New England in the first half, once in
the second half. The only series in the first half
he played Seattle drove to a touchdown. The Seahwks are
(32:05):
starting a third string right tackle Stone Forsyth. Second stringer
George fan is on injured reserve with the knee issue
that happened on Saturday. He went on IR. The starter.
Abe Lucas is eligible to come off the physic and
able perform list after the game Monday night in Detroit.
Will he This is what Mike McDonald had to say
about Abe Lucas yesterday.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
I don't want to put a timeline on Abe right now.
We have kind of an in house timeline with him
and we're working through it, but I'm not going to
put a timeline on him right now.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
In other words, no, this is what Mike McDonald had
to say about rookie Christian Haynes. With Anthony Bradford still
starting in the right.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Guard, Christian deserves an opportunity to go compete a little
bit more. How much so we'll kind of let the
practices aside at this point.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
He said that last week. He didn't say about the
practice part, but he said that Haines deserved to start
more or play more. We'll see if this week Christian
Haines plays more at right guard for Bradford. That's at
it as far as options go, Lake and Thomlinson is
the left guard. In the preseason, they had Haynes starting
at left guard. He started two preseason games at left guard. Well,
(33:08):
Bradford started at right guard, So that's an option if
they wanted to go away from Laken Thomlinson and left
guard to put Christian Haines in there. But Christian Haynes
was all forty nine of his starts at Connecticut University
of Connecticut was at right guard. It's an ongoing question.
We could spend entire shows talking about the offensive line.
But as Mike McDonald alluded to in the last segment,
it's a pretty good to be learning and experimenting and
(33:29):
trying to figure out the offensive line where they're three
to zero. Next, Jerry Epstein, Senior writer for the NFL
