On Wednesday night, Darian DeVries got a double victory in the portal, with Jasai Miles (UNF) and Tayton Conerway (Troy) pledging to the Hoosiers. Miles and Conerway add to Indiana's backcourt, as IU continues to renovate their playing style for the upcoming season.

Darren DeVries. There are eight guys we can we have
scatter thoughts about that so much more here on episode

co host Matt Luken's Matt Josi Miles North Florida, two
years of eligibility left. We're gonna talk about him first,
because he committed first. Those are the rules in this.
In this, in this uh dojo, Miles fifteen points six

rebounds at North Florida, two assists. The metrics don't like
his defense. The three point in free throw shooting, they're down.
But I can't wait to see what Darren DeVries does
with him, especially because it's a two year player. I
love that two years of eligibility remaining. What are your
thoughts on Josi Miles out of North Florida?

Well, what is what is that? What's a two year player? Okay?
We have whatmore?

Speaker 1 (03:14):
I don't know?

Maybe goodie?

Yes, basically everybody here is a one one year rental, right,
so uh yeah, I mean.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
We'll see hopefully.

I mean, I pray to god he's here for longer
than one here, but if he's not an Eye uniform
for longer than one year.

There's problems.

But no, sim Miles, I'm super excited about him. I
know some of the numbers don't really love him, but
then you I've watched a bunch of people talk about
him that I respect their basketball opinions.

And they all love them. I absolutely love him.

He's a He's a kid that you know last season,
will as a you know, an unheralded freshman didn't really
play a lot step up to a big role on
an unf team that was pretty okay, and I did
very well for himself and he was basically all of

their offense on that team, or not all of their offense,
but he was a He was a solid chunk of
that offense and a lot of people consider him the
best player on that UNF team, which, by the way,
another UNF guy went to Purdue. The fans were celebrating
him like he was the second coming of Jesus Christ himself.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Meanwhile, we got the best player from that team.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
So this weekend, the second coming of Jesus Christ is
pretty lofty. You know, it's a pretty lofty comparison. That's
just my opinion, you know, like this is again.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
They're doing down in who I don't know. I don't know. Look,
I don't know what they're doing down in Jacksonville. That's
just what I was told.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Okay, So I found an interesting North Florida did have
five guys averaging ten of game or more last year,
but like you said, that was paced by Josi, who
led the team at fifteen. He was thirteam All conference
in a pretty competitive Atlantic son And I want to say,
Atlantic Sun, I can't wait to see what Darren Dereze

does with this player, because again, two years of eligibility,
North Florida got off to a great start last year.
I don't know if you folks remember, but like in
the first week or two they were kind of the
Cinderella of college basketball. They had at Georgia Tech. Actually
they won at South Carolina first, and then they went

(05:48):
at Georgia Tech. And at that point they were like, hey,
shot on North Florida playing great basketball. Then they got
their ass kicked by Georgia and Florida. Well that of
lots of teams there, true road, true road, and Georgia
was an NTAA Tournament two. But even after those first

(06:10):
three four games, folks were like, hey, look, North Florida
could be interesting, could be captivating. And by the way,
as we found out, this is a year where mid
majors didn't win many games against time major opponents, and
there was North Florida continue clearly, clearly Matt Painter was
paying attention as well, Like North Florida actually went on

(06:32):
the road one against time major opposition, and at that
point they were like, hey, not only is North Florida winning,
have you guys seen this six to six guards of
cy Miles play. Have you watched Leam Murphy, this three
point shooter that North Florida has, and all of a sudden,
even though North Florida finished below five hundred on the season,

(06:53):
they have a couple of guys who are going to
UH who are going to play in the Big Ten
this upcoming season. I out, and you know what I've
tried to do on Indiana HQ during portal season is
find somebody who not only fit the statistical profile of
an incoming transfer commit that Indiana has, but also find

(07:16):
like a similar story. You know, so many guys make comparisons,
and we've done that plenty of times and we'll probably
do that again here today. But like when Tamar Bates
commits to Indiana, it's like, oh, he reminds me of
so and so. Or when Miller cop commits to Indiana,
Oh he reminds me of so and so. But in
this portal season I've tried to like dig in a

little bit more and say, hey, if this is a
mid major transfer who's moving up a level with one
year left, is there a guard who's like him? Or
is there forward who's like him? And with Lamar Wilkerson,
I sat there and I said, Wow, chas Lanier who

(07:58):
went from North Florida to Tennessee. I said this around
Indiana HQ. There's some data that supports it as well.
Chas Lanier is very similar to Lamar Wilkerson from a
physical standpoint, from a statistical standpoint, and from a storyline.
Chas Lanier goes also from North Florida up to Tennessee.

(08:18):
Lamar Wilkerson doing the same thing Sam Houston State to
Indiana one year left. There is nobody. There is nobody
that fits Josi Miles from a physical, statistical, and storyline perspective.
It's a six to six guard who's going for fifteen
and six. Not much of an a sister. He takes threes,

(08:43):
he takes free throws. The ball doesn't always go in
the net. The steals and blocks aren't quite there. I
I I don't know if Darren Devrees is gonna plan
on starting him this upcoming season. I don't know if
Darren Devrees wants to have a two year plan. I
don't know if two your plans exist anymore in college basketball.

(09:04):
But I do know for sure that schools like Michigan
had contact with Josia Miles. Schools out of the SEC,
the ACC had contact with Josiah Miles. So he was
bound to make a jump up to the Power Conference level.
Is there anyone that you've watched, anyone in the history

(09:25):
of college basketball that reminds you of what Josia Miles
is right now or what he can be, because right
now I have no idea.

I agree with you, I have no idea, But.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
I will say there's one aspect of his game that
reminds me of.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
I said it before the podcast is slipping my mind again?

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Which school? Which school? Was it?

Speaker 2 (09:54):
State?

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Oh, that's right, that's right, Tyson Walker.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
His ability to lock it in in some games and go,
you know what, that's it. I'm taken over from just
a scoring perspective, like a scoring aspect, He's just that's it.
I'm scoring the next eight points and no one's stopping me,
and I don't even and my teammates don't even need

(10:21):
to touch the ball like guys no Ocher had that
ability to just go off in games. I'm just thinking
from a Big Ten guards perspective, It's not really been
a lot of guards in the Big Ten that I
have been really able to do that a consistent basis,
And Josiah was able to do that down the stretch
for un f I didn't win a lot of games,

(10:43):
but I don't think that really matters TVH, especially when
he was surrounded by some talent, but they're not very
cohesive as a team, and he'll be in a much
more cohesive team I think at IU that and be
surrounded by players that will help him succeed. And I've

seen people talk about this is shooting numbers, and then
I don't think the shooting numbers are actually that bad.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yea.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
I probably needs to work on his free throws and
getting that percentage up, but a lot of free throw
the percentage comes down to confidence, right more than anything.
And again, he was a player that didn't play a
lot last the year previous to this year, and then
played a ton this year. You know that confidence is
obviously just growing in him.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
And then the.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
Three point shooting numbers, I think he he had to
basically create I himself a majority of his three point looks.
I think it was something like three to four of
his seven looks per game.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
We're off of you know, iso isolation, you know, off
the dribble created opportunity these.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
And when you shoot three to four, you know, desperation
threes a game you're looking, you're not going to shoot
a very high percentage, right, So he shot like I think,
close to fifty percent or somewhere around there in spot
up threes, which is more more of an indication to

(12:26):
me of how good of a shooter he is.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
But I think his shooting is fine. And again he
won't have.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
To go iso ball mode all that often for IU,
hopefully this season. So I think obviously his scoring numbers
will go down, but I think his shooting numbers will
certainly certainly.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Go I would love I would love to see that.
And that's great context. Right. Remember you know, for everyone listening,
you can't just copy paste a box score from a
player and say, oh, he's going to do that in Indiana.
For your point about the for your wint about the
you know, the winning the winning games part, again, it

(13:05):
doesn't matter because Matt Pater wanted a guy from the
same team. So it all has to do with vision,
It all us to do with an identity. It all
has to do with the mindset and the system because
like and that may not have existed at at North Florida.

(13:29):
And by the way, remember it's why it's white guys
who transfer out of Indiana when Indiana doesn't have a
great season and then go somewhere else, you know, find success.
By the way, tomar Bates transferred from Indiana to Missouri, Indiana,
you know it was a tournament team when he left,
but they weren't a tournament team and uh no they were.

(13:51):
They made the plane Okay, fine, the first four okay fine,
But then he went to Missou when oh to eighteen
in conference, lay at missoo and then made the tournament
at so so what is it right? So like it's
you know that that narrative does not work. North Florida

(14:15):
had ups and downs in a competitive conference, so be it.
That happens to everyone. For what it's worth, the previous season,
North Florida went sixteen and sixteen. Their best player, chas
Lynar went to Tennessee and has had an amazing had
an amazing season this past season. And Tennessee doesn't regret

(14:38):
that move for sure. By the way, North Florida, you know,
North Florida's probably you know, like, hey, we get some
we get some guys, uh you know, some extra some
extra playing time. I I don't have an answer to
this question. You know, I could see Tyson Walker, I'm
gonna pick someone who's like wildly different, which is the
story here with Josiah Miles, Like I kind of see little,

(14:58):
I kind of see a little Brooks Barnheiser out of Northwestern.
Like it's nuts because you're like, no, that doesn't make
any sense. But Brooks Barnheiser was a big guard, and
in his initial season at Northwestern where he was a
significant factor, this is the twenty three to twenty four season,

(15:19):
he went for fifteen points, seven rebounds, couple assists. I
can kind of see it. I think they have sort
of cocomparable playing styles too. It's a huge stretch. That's
why this is so fascinating to me for Darren Devrees,

(15:40):
especially because Matt think about this right at Indiana, where
you know, you kind of know what the non conference
schedule looked like. It'll be like two to four big games.
The rest of them are kind of fillers. You know
what the Big ten schedule looks like. More often than not,
it feels like to tie player. The type of player

(16:03):
that either makes Indiana a winning team or a losing
team is a big perimeter guard. Going back to Cream days,
it was Oladipo, it was she he who really helped
Indiana elevate a level. And then with Archie Miller and

(16:25):
Mike Woodson, they tried to make it work with guys
like and it doesn't even have to be a guard necessarily,
just kind of big, big guys who sticked most of
the time on the on the perimeter. Like you know,
Jerome Hunter was was an injury issue his whole time
at Indiana and at Xavier. I'm happy he was able

(16:46):
to sort of finish his college career the way he wanted.
Mike Woodson tried making a work with Tamar Bates. It
didn't quite help Indiana get to that next level, but
it did work with Woodson and Jalen Schaffino, there's a
bigger guard on the perimeter. It helped Indiana get a
top four seed in the Big Ten, a top four

(17:07):
seed in the NCAA Tournament. It feels like with Indiana,
that big guard, that six' five six sixth guard or
player that spends time on the perimeter kind of has
a lot to do with either helping that team get

(17:29):
get to another level or it makes life difficult on the.
COACH i kind of feel Like mackenzie And baco is
sort of a big six' six. Perimeter guy it just
never quite hit full Speed with Mackenzie at indiana over.
Two SEASONS am i really stretching here for? A NARRATIVE
because i feel Like If josi miles, can hit it's

not only Gonna Make darren devi's life easier this upcoming
season and, year One But jessi miles could be a
really really lethal fourth in the twenty six twenty, seventh
season which right now it's just. Imm, ENTRANCES.

Josiah has the opportunity and the runway on this team
to just be a scorer off. THE bench i don't
think he's going to be. A starter i've seen some
people elude to. The, FACT well i watched a Podcast

well against power. Five competition and again a lot of
a lot of these guys when you look up. AND
down i didn't even realize this when we were talking
about it the, other NIGHT but i was kind, of talking,
YOU know I guess i kind of laid it out
THERE and i just didn't connect. The dots all of
the guys that we've been looking at that are mid
major guys all had really productive Games against power five

or high high tier, conference opponents like all of them,
last year, you know. Productive seasons but within, those seasons
they also had very productive games against teams that they played.

State josiah miles played pretty well in all the game
that they played last year in some of the games
that you mentioned earlier when we TALKED About unfs cinderella
run at the beginning of.

Season, Uh reed bailey of course played very Well for
davidson this year and multiple games. Like that, so again
like all of and we'll Talk about conway by way,
of it but, you know all of these guys showed
production against people of A and i quote higher.

You even Think about Tucker to Rees? And, Bahamas, Right
like Tucker to rees had a very good free game

In bahamas, so again all of these guys showed signs
last year of, you know uh what they could possibly. In,
Potential right so it's up to the coaching staff, to really,

person hall so far, screams versatility right in the Sense
That darren DeVries is done with one dimensional. Basketball players but.

In roles it's a completely different way of looking.

At, this well and he's done with guys that can
play one role exactly in the sense that, You, know

i'm gonna put him at. The CENTER if I Need
read bailey to play ball handler out of the, forward
spot point, Forward spot i'm gonna give him a couple possessions.
Of That, lamar wilkerson you might be point guard here.

And there you might be off ball here. AND there
i might have, SWITCHED defensively i might have you go
band a. Band, defensively transistly you may have to play
drop coverage on the pick, and ROLL or i might
have you go over the over the top on. The
Screen and i'm going to trust your length and athleticism
in the fifteen to TWENTY minutes i give you in your. Freshman,
season like it's very Clear that devrees is done with

the type of Basketball that indiana's played over the last. Eight,
seasons yeah he clearly saw. This program, and, Again like
i'm not gonna. Crap On like indiana hasn't had dreadful
years since the start Of The archie. Miller era they
probably would have made the tournament in the nineteen. Twenty

season they did make the tournament in the first two Years,
of woods.

this high school player who's, going off it says on

not been Dreadful at indiana the last. Eight years there

if devrees watched this team over, that Time and i'm sure,
he did he probably would have sat here, and said
we've got to completely revamp the type of basketball that
this team plays in, this league in. This state and
lo and behold of the eight guys that we've got

on our team, right now six of them. Are guards.

EIGHT guards i. Like Guards And teyton conway's. Another guard
we'll talk about him in just. A minute, but like
the only two forwards on this team Are read Bailey,
and Transily and transisly is probably probably not gonna.

Play, MUCH well, I know i just said that To
sim miles isn't going to start because we're gonna be
starting a big and read. It before but THERE is
i guess, a chance or a very high probability that
we start, three guards basically because if we get any,

more guards we have too many unless we're going in
a three. Guard system so, we'll see.

WE'LL see, i mean there are a lot of options here.
For debrees i'm sure that's exactly what's he's. Strived for,
You know i'm sure he doesn't want to be back
to a corner as far as, his rotation. HIS minutes
i do feel like guys are going to earn playing
time by merit instead of promising, pre season which is

High school Academic In Indiana academic goneril the last a
couple of. Seasons ago sports management major likes, to travel
spend time with. His family played varsity in. Eighth Grade

Is country Day basketball juggernaut met eighth? Grade Varsity, uh
no But There.

Country day it's a, Private School.

COUNTRY day i remember they've had some good football players
come Out Of, country DAY and i can't remember off
the top of. My head it's not, nice, school Though The,
Country day i'm PRETTY sure i.

Love It north florida's Head coach matthew driscoll is probably
gonna Get A power. Conference job at some point in
the next three two, three seasons he Mentioned that josi
miles work ethic have really has really stood out. To
him you talk About coach Driscoll At north florida Saying

that josi really understands the mentality that work brings profit
coupled with an incredible smile at an ability to encourage those.
Around him so you really get the entire package off
the court Seemingly With. Josi miles so He's. A hoosier
we're gonna Talk About tayton connaway in just, a minute

past week IN i, U sports and we're just gonna
