Speaker 1 (00:06):
All right, I you fans, it's been a it's been
a it's been a month. Darren Devrees took over as
Indiana's head coach, I believe on March nineteenth. I think
that's when I think the press conference might have been
on the twentieth or the twenty first. In the last
few weeks have been insane. We've seen a lot, I
(00:31):
know for sure. I think over a thousand college basketball
men's players have put their name in the portal. I
think it might even be more than that. I think
it might be like fifteen hundred or so.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
But that's a lot.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
And musical chairs, rapid fire have been going on here
for the last several weeks, and Indiana's building a roster,
Darren Devrees putting some names together for his first season
as INA's men's basketball coach. Still some work to do,
but yesterday it was a nice chill Tuesday afternoon, and
(01:11):
then bang we heard Lamar Wilkerson committed to Indiana over Kentucky.
Of course, the Hoosias and the Wildcats will do battle
at rapp Arena in December, So Matt and I are
going to dig into Lamar Wilkerson, what he brings to
the table, how excited we are that he is going
to be a Hoosier this upcoming season, discussed a couple
(01:34):
of the other portal commits that have come through Indiana's
way recently, and then so so, so much more here
on episode three forty four of The Hoosier Sound. Where
we are the official podcast of Indiana HQ, recording this
edition of The Hoosier Sound on Wednesday, April sixteenth, twenty
twenty five. Here I am your host, Ist Christian with
(01:56):
me tonight as my normal co host, Matt Luken's Matt,
I know you're going through it, but you know, Darren Deries,
we proud of your fight here, your resilience, your perseverance.
This is the kind of toughness that Darren de Rez
probably wants to see in his men's basketball program. I
don't know what details you want to share with the
folks listening here, but with Lamar Wilkerson's commitment, you're doing
(02:20):
what you can to be here on this podcast episode today.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
I am yeah, well one, as you can obviously all see.
I am currently outside it's about eleven pm at night
here in China and my current or brand new apartment.
I just moved into yesterday is a current internet black hole,
has no internet in it and sell service sucks.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
So I had to go outside to talk to you guys.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
And then on top of that, I was running a
couple of days ago outside and I and this is
what if it was alluding to, I tripped and fell
and I broke a rib. So, you know, I hope
that that does not happen to any of our basketball players.
I actually don't wish it upon anybody because it hurts
(03:05):
so bad, Like even talking right now hurts. Yeah, So
I I really I don't wish this upon anybody, but
I'm I'm fighting through it, and I you know, I
would be less reluctant to to fight through it if
it wasn't for the fact that we've had back to
back to back great news for IU basketball after a
(03:26):
very slow start with transfer portal have some.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Actual fun stuff to talk about. We might even have
some fun.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Stuff to talk about in football here soon with a
lot of people entering the portal there and possible new
additions to that roster as well. So, I mean, Poort
and I we can't, you know, we can't stop talking
about portaling because the women's basketball team is getting portal
recruiters as well.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
I mean, everybody's the portal is just insane now.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
It's crazy times.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Well, I you know, you know, just just just to
to track for one second when people talked about, oh,
like the portal was going to change college basketball, you know,
like you're probably right put to what degree? No, I
mean it's a completely different sport. Like from when we
(04:16):
first started doing this podcast until now, those are two
completely different sports, two completely different sports.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
People used to transfer back in twenty eighteen.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Nineteen, but they didn't, they didn't d commit from transfers
like we just saw.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Was it not taking Conrad? That's the guy we're recruiting.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Uh, the guy that went to South Carolina from oh
what was that guy's name? There's there's a there's a
very highly rated point guard whose name is is slipping
my mind, but he committed to South Carolina just decommitted
from them. Oh uh, I forget his name.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Don't say his name is gonna piss me off.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
But you know, you have you have people you know,
going door to door basically in these programs and getting
prices rising up. It's it's fucking sorry, it's breaking insane.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Sorry.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
No, it's going to edit that up.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
That's breaking insane, really really really is crazy.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Yeah, Trason not Trayson Eagles. Staff is the player you're
talking about who left South Carolina after his big conference
tournament game. Uh back in back in March, Lamar Wilkerson. That,
I mean, how exciting is it for Indiana to get
a bigger mid major guard. That's one quality of his
(05:36):
that separates him immediately from some of the other mid
major players that make that move that transfer up to
the power sixth level. Wilkerson's a six to four combo guard,
shooting guard. You can sort of what he's a. He's
a he's a backwart player. He's a guard guard. Yeah's guard?
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Sam Houston State also played at Three Rivers Community College
for a year.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
He's a community college kid.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
And I don't know, I don't know if you know this, Matt.
I don't know if anyone really put this online yesterday.
There's a pretty famous NBA alum from Three Rivers Community
College who played in the NBA in like the nineties
and the two thousands, played college basketball in Alabama. Do
(06:26):
you want to give it a shot? Mat, He's a
guard similar size, a little bit bigger, A little bit
bigger than Connor, a little bit bigger than Lamar.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Wilkerson playing college basketball in Alabama.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yes, NBA guy on Timberwolves, Nicks, I have no idea.
Latrelle's pretty well was three Rivers College alum and that's
(07:00):
where That's where Lamar Wilkerson played college basketball per year
before going to sam Houston State. They had a little
blast in the past, by the way, three years college
at Missouri in Pittsburgh. As you might think, that's uh,
that's out in Missouri, then sam Houston State in Bearcat
Country with a k in Texas. Wilkerson now Hoosier twenty
(07:26):
points per game at sam Houston State, six point three
point attempts per game, as well a robust forty four
percent from downtown. But as Lamar Wilkerson told Jeff Goodman
on Tuesday afternoon, on the field of sixty eight, he's
gotten for fifty percent. Not someone to set the bar
(07:49):
at a reasonable level. I guess Lamar Wilkerson, he's shooting
for fifty. So look, it came down to Indiana and Kentucky.
Matt this is somebody who isn't flawless. He definitely is
uh is going to have to make some improvements on
the defensive side of the ball. But immediately I could
(08:10):
see an enthusiastic player, an optimistic player, and energetic player. Uh,
someone who has the right mindset to get Indiana basketball
up another level or two compared to where it's at
right now. Huge win for Darren da Frees. I I
think Lamar Wilkerson might be my favorite player on this
team right now.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I mean, I I usually agree with you on that,
but I really like Tuger Devrees talk. I think people really,
really really have just completely yeah, not even missed, not
even a misunderstanding of his commitment, but totally just disregarded
the fact that Trees is one of the better player players.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
In all of college basketball, and he's playing for.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
His dad's system, is going to be put in good
positions to win.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Like, I don't know that guy's.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Going to be dope. But I mean, speaking of of
of Debrees, right, speaking of Tucker, Wilkerson is maybe the
second best shooter in the portal behind Tucker, maybe the
best shooter in the portal, and Tucker follows him.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
I mean, to the two best your shooters.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
In the entire portal are now going to be playing
for your Indiana Hoosiers next season.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
And that is enough to get me super excited.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
And walking around my apartment complex at eleven thirty at
night watching Ddie Drivers. And so you know, I'm I'm
super super guessed for this. I mean, you mentioned he
needs to work on a defense.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
I'm not gonna lie. I've watched some of his tape.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
It's not bad.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
His defense is actually pretty serviceable.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
He just didn't have a lot of help on a
team that went thirteen and seventeen.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
And what the Sun Sun Conference USA last year?
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Yeah, in the conference you say, they think that's right,
they're in comfort to say, because I.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Play is a tough too.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's a it's a tough lead. And
he's done. He's done extremely well on a pretty subpar
Sam Houston team. He was pulling a lot of weight
and taking a lot of shots and scoring a lot
of points for a team that needed him to do
that last year.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
And he did that at a very you know, very.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Efficient level, right, like in a very efficient way, which
is extremely impressive to me just based off the ball.
I mean, like we he took like almost seven three
pointers a game or a little over seven part of
the game shop forty four from three like that is
absurd and I'm sorry. People were like, well, I'm not
sure he's gonna be able to get those opportunities to hire,
(11:03):
you know, a higher conference. Heck, yeah he did. He
lit up by you when we played them last year.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
So he's he's gonna be fine.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
And when you look at some of the pieces we're
kind of putting around him, I think he's he's going
he might be one of the best players in all
of college basketball next year. You know, you look at
every single year for the last three or four years,
there has been one transfer from a you know, a
(11:33):
low major or a mid major conference that has popped
up to the P five and has just taken off right,
Like from a scoring perspective. Uh, you know, Dalton connect
is one that I you know, immediately pops off my head.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Walter Clayton last couple of years.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Walter Walter Clayton, last couple of years.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Who is the uh uh Chaslinier Tennessee h Dalton connecting,
Chas Leaner, but Chaslinear A bunch of these guys who
who you know, scored up brick ton of points at
their previous school and then went up to the Power
five level and were surrounded with good teammates and a
(12:16):
good system that fits them and gave them a lot
of shots, and they did very well and and you
know continued or you know in Dalton X almost expeeded
his previous numbers.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
I'm thinking about Jalen Pickett too. Remember Jalen Pickett went
from Siena to pet State.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Well, you know we're gonna talk about Jalen Pickett because
I think I you might have a very similar player
in in what he will bring to IU when we
talk about Connorway. So I think Jalen Pickett and Connorway,
those are two guys not very well known for their shooting,
known for their passing, known for the defense.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
I think both of those I think that.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Comp is very applicable to that, and I'm super excited
for Connorway if.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
We can get them.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
But anyways, that's that's besides.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
But yeah, I mean, like there's every single year there's
a group of guys that come through and go up
this level. I would I would put my bank account
that that Wilkerson is among that group.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
When all things are.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Said, Hey, Connor Enry just tweeted We're not done yet,
a gift, a gift of we're not done yet. So
just like we have no news here. I mean, of
course we do a lot of you know, you know,
I run in d N HQ. We've been credentialed in
all this before. But like, I don't have any actual news.
(13:44):
But there's just a lot of smoke right now that
I feel like could hit this episode here within the
next I don't know, fifteen minutes. Maybe Wilkerson, it's funny
you talked about picket with Connorway if that happens. But
I look at Wilkerson and it's shocking how identical, I'll say,
(14:08):
strongly similar Wilkerson's profile is to Chas Lanier because like
we've talked about linear now a couple of times in
the first I don't know, ten minutes or so, from
the physical qualities the height, the size, the twitchiness, the speed,
to the statistics as you look at shooting percentage and
(14:32):
shots taken and free throws taken and rebounds and assists
and steals to just like the story right Chas Lanier,
North Florida mid Major, but like the lower part of
the mid major spectrum to making a smooth transition to
(14:54):
the University of Tennessee, where he was All Conference second
Team in the best conference in college of basketball this
past season. If Lamar Wilkerson can be All Conference any
of the three teams, I'll be extremely happy. And remember,
Indiana did not have an All Big Ten representative this
(15:16):
past season. Even though they had some solid contributions from
players like umar Bolo Belik renewed, it just wasn't good
enough to be a top fifteen player in the eighteen
team Big Ten. Lamar Wilkerson caught a lot of attention
yesterday when he went on the field of sixty eight.
Plenty of quotes that caught people, that caught people's mind,
(15:39):
that definitely grabbed interest. I'll be honest with you, Matt,
Indiana hasn't accomplished jack in about eight years. And there
were a lot of butt hurt fan bases in Indiana
HQs mentions yesterday all day, all day. And of course
(16:02):
I'm just saying, like, if Darren Devrees can get this
thing on the tracks just a little bit, I mean
we're talking, you know, consistently back in the NCAA tournament,
you know, a three to four win improvement to where
you're getting twenty two plus wins the season. You know,
(16:22):
I remember Tom Crean said this a lot, like when
he was building Indiana back up across like oh nine,
twenty ten, twenty eleven. He's like, a lot of people
want to see Indiana down. A lot of people don't
want to see Indiana do well. And I was like,
come on, like you don't think of yourself to be
more important than you actually are. But then over the
course of time you kind of see it. You kind
(16:44):
of see it fester, and you see it develop, and
you see it take place on social media. A lot
of people want Indiana to continue missing tournaments. And I'm
talking about people who root for North Carolina and Duke
and Louisville. Forget our Big ten rivals. I mean, can
Kentucky fans obviously irate over losing Lamart Wilkerson too uh
(17:04):
to confutors, but like it's shocking to see I I was.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
I was kind of cracking up on my couch yesterday
just seeing all these folks so annoyed and so upset
that a quality player would go play in front of
seventeen thousand people, and I had millions of engaged followers
on social media.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
I don't know. I guess that carries some weight nowadays
when you say.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Man, I would hope so it always should have.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
But also, like I mean, it's easy to punch down,
like all those programs were up. I mean you saw
IU fans I mean, not me, I mean a hand up,
not me, but you saw some people. And you know,
the last couple of years when Louisville has been yeah
you treth uh. You know, I've seen a ton of
(17:53):
EU fans just punching down, right, yeah, and then all
of a sudden, you know, last year in the Bahamas
they beat is by seventy five, and and they have
a great season, and and.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Now they want to they want to punch down because.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
We fired our coach.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Don't forget.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Don't forget now, like let's not let's not throw let's
not be throwing stones and glasshouses over here at little fans.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
But but I mean.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Obviously I understand Kentucky fans being mad, and then North
Carolina fans, I mean they have to just be mad
at the world at this point. I mean, they haven't
been this really irrelevant as a program since before Jordan
got there, you know, And then you have.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
To do because number one overall. See, I mean that
sucks for them, you know.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
It really does, really really really you know, just for
for for that specifically that North Carolina fan.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
It's just really so just so I'm just so sorry.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
I just anyways, it's crazy to see. Yeah, it's just funny.
I'm just like, I'm just but like, I mean, that's
what's happened. We've gone from will Debrees do anything in
the portal? Yeah, and then about a week.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Later we've gone to We're gonna buy the whole dang portal.
It doesn't matter every player, I don't care.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
They're gonna be in a Hoosier unifore, you know.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
And it's that kind of momentum has spread over to football,
where like basically I've seen people tweet about under every
single portal, portal and footballsia. I'm like, okay, but I'm
not not everybody can be I mean not everyone. Well
everyone is willing to play for coach sake.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
And and and I do notice at least with Debrees
at Wilsonnetty too, but like Derees especially like you know,
in his in his first month on the job, he
is recruiting to a plan he's recruiting to a vision,
the resources.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
He's building a team. He's building a straight up the team.
The pieces that fit together. I mean, this is you know,
I'm sorry I took over your point.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
But we kind of saw the with the Woodson team
that last summer when they were putting all of these
pieces together, We're like, who the heck's the two guard?
How does this fit? These guys don't really shoot three
pointers all that well? Okay, Luke Goody's coming. What position
does he play? Him and Paco play the same position?
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Is not going to be?
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Will they be able to play on the floor together?
What does Tray Galloway do on this team?
Speaker 2 (20:24):
Okay? Omar Ballo rebounds the ball, but he doesn't shoot
free throws. Will he be a good free throw shooter
at IU?
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Probably not?
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Will that fix you free throw troubles? Probably not? So
what's happening here? Right? Like?
Speaker 3 (20:35):
But then you look down at every.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Piece and I'm going to include Connorway in this, by
the way, sure at every piece that that that Devreise
has added, you know, and right, defense, passing all right,
table setting, point guard awesome, great Wilkerson, knock down lethal.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Shooter and score, can.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Play a little bit of defense, does a little bit
of everything. Maybe one of the best players, if not
the best player on the roster. Then you have Debrees again,
one of the best players in the country. We're not
We're gonna talk about it in a second because I'm
gonna bring it up. But a guy that can do
it all on offense. And you know, maybe he's not
(21:20):
the best defender, but he's a willing defender.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
So that's that's good.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
You have re Bailey, right, a big that can that
can shoot. In the past, I'm I'm a little bit
nervous about his defense and his physicality and his ability
to to uh become a big ten big.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
And I also don't know what his position is. I
don't know if he's a four. I don't know if
he's a five.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
I don't I don't know.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
If he's gonna be guarding fours. I don't know if
he's gonna be guarding fives. Like I don't, I don't.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Know exactly where he fits.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
We'll figure that out. Far away defender, fantastic distributor to
the ball, great, great cutter. I mean, all of these
guys fit together.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Yeah, they totally do. And and you know, I'm even
thinking with Red Bailey, you have someone who's who's a
good pass like he he can pass out of a
six ten frame, he can attack from the perimeter, he
can attack from from the paint. You know, I think
as Degrees continues to strategize in the portal over the
next several weeks, getting wings, getting a bag that can
(22:35):
just you know, forget even the scoring piece of it. Uh,
you know, protect the rim, grab rebounds, foul is needed.
The post. The big man in the post especially has
never been a main feature of Darren Dere's offense. So
it's not going to be that way in Indiana. Like that,
those times are done, Folks like just to make that
perfectly like, those times are done. I don't I don't
(22:59):
know if Indiana is going to throw a pass into
the post all season coming out. Well, it depends on
what happens here over the next few weeks. But Indiana
basketball is moving into twenty twenty five where guards are
going to run the show. Big, versatile, dynamic players who
(23:22):
can do multiple things. You're six' ten forward can shoot the,
three he can move the, ball he can he can
make the right, reads distribute as. Needed indiana is going
to be very, switchable especially on the. Perimeter, again we'll
see what happens over the next few. Weeks indiana still
(23:42):
has to add three or four rotation pieces to this.
Roster but long gone are the days of dumping the
ball into the block and trying to score two points
at a. Time those days are.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
DONE i both, SAY i don't think bit into any
bigs in the, post but you know, what we might
see a little bit. Here we might see a little
bit of booty ball a little With.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Connorway, yes.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Which which is WHAT i was about to, say which
is THAT i went down that list of all the
players that are currently on the, ROSTER i HAVEN'T i
haven't talked About Trent. Sisley it looks like he's a
better prospect every single DAY i.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
SEE i see this guy every single CLIP i see.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Him, dude he's.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Getting better all the. Time he's been rising so.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Much for. Me he killed it a bird and that's
like obviously a great, sign as you, know as that
is one of the best places to play college basketball
high school basketball in the. Country BUT i, mean he's
he's killed. It and then you talk About Lou Goodie
goodie's such a good, shooter as really such a you,
(25:03):
know a vital piece of this program as he can come.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Back we haven't even talked about, them but everybody.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
We've talked, about all the, transfers all the Former drake, guys,
right all of all of all of the new, Additions
they're all fantastic.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Passers all of.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Them it's so.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Great all of them. Are all of them are great.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Pastors and even Will christen has a decent assist, percentage
BUT i, Mean connorway is one of the best passers
in the portal and right is one of the best
passers in the.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
Portal ye Read bailey for his size was.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
For his size yea for his. Size Ninety tucker degrees
last year didn't have great assist numbers because he was
mostly running off the, ball off the shot and it
was a very small. Sample but when he was At,
drake he was running the offense right the ball went through.
(26:07):
Him so you have another dude that can run the
offense on that out there that you have a lineup
of if you have a lineup of a theoretical, lineup
which is very possible by the way of M right
at point Guard.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Wilkerson at the two.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Guards, Uh connorway kind of like a point. Forward, Yeah,
Uh devrees at the, four And bailey at the. Five
of five guys that can, ask, shoot move.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
The, ball AND i don't know how. YOU i don't
know how you guard that, lineup like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
And then they'll have to figure out how to guard
people on the other. Side but that's that's that's what
the next six months are for and so you sort
of figure that part. Out we'll talk more About devrees.
Here Lamar wilkerson coming up here in just a, Second
but first real quick focus time for who won the
week this past week IN iu. Sports and it's been
(27:07):
a bumpy season for baseball and softball this, spring but
we're gonna tip our cap to a few players. Here Brianna,
copeland who's been an amazing feature on the on THE
iu softball, team set THE iu home run record for
the program this this past, week so shout out to.
Her she's Been she's been an awesome player to watch
(27:27):
during her time In. Indiana Taylor Minnick Edgewood High school
set the program record and runs bad at in FOR iu,
softball so that's wonderful to. See and Then Devin taylor
on the baseball, side who's going to be a very
high pick in The Major League baseball. Draft he tied
THE iu program record for home. RUNS i believe he
it is forty six or forty seven On tuesday Against Indiana.
(27:51):
State so happy to SEE dt keep things rolling along this.
Season the baseball team has has has had a has
had a has had a rough one this, season but
the Best, Yeah Jeff mercer will will turn things. RIGHT
i am fairly confident in HIS i saw managerial.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
ABILITIES i saw a quote for him recently that.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
He's a BASEBALL i think it's something like baseball is BASEBALL? Us.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
YEA i saw.
Speaker 7 (28:20):
THAT i was, like is baseball not supposed to be?
Baseball but at the same, time LIKE i, UNDERSTOOD i got.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
IT i know exactly what he's. Saying it's, hard out
of out of context baseball BASEBALL. Us.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
YEAH i cool, That, like what are you what what
edibles are you?
Speaker 7 (28:43):
Having.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Yeah, look at the end of the, day for For,
MERCER i think it's important for folks to remember it's,
very very very difficult to build a successful college baseball
program outside OF Sec country AND. Caln the fact That
Indiana baseball Through Tracy, smith then Through Jeff, mercer have
(29:09):
done a solid job putting up CONSISTENT ncaa tournament. Seasons
it's a testament to what they're doing in the. PROGRAM
a bad year is a reason to fire. Anyone SO
Iu baseball turn things around soon. Enough but just wanted
to give a shot out to those three folks doing
the thing on the. DIAMOND a, reminder, folks if you
like what you're, listening if you enjoy our, show leave
(29:32):
us a review over On Apple, podcasts tell a, friend
share our. Links that kind of support really helps us
grow this podcast reach more PASSIONATE i you fans such
as yourself, again you can find a social media At INDIANA,
hq at The hoos your sound see those of you
who are following. Us if you already do, again tell a,
friend tell a, neighbor tell a, stranger help them join
(29:55):
the masses here over on social. MEDIA a lot of
quotes From Lamar wilkers on the field of sixty. Eight
he gave a scouting report on, himself so you can
expect to see a good dude that's all. In he
likes to think he's electric and plays, passion maybe even too. Much.
Passion wilkerson said he has a different chip on his.
Shoulder nothing was ever handed to, him which is very
(30:16):
true when you think about high School JUCO d. One
now he's at one of the premier basketball programs in
college In division, one especially here now with The Indiana.
HOOSIERS i like his comments as far as defense is.
Concerned he, said you, know previous coaches along the, Way
i've instilled in. Him, look you can score, thirty but
(30:39):
if the guy you're guarding scores thirty, five he ended
with the. Loss so you, KNOW i really like seeing
that type of mindset From Lamar wilkerson as. Well and
now you, know you definitely think he's going to step
in here in a starting. Role, Especially, yeah.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
You're gonna especially when you you, KNOW i went game by.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
GAME i went game by game over the last couple of. Years,
uh he's he's been pretty effective against power conference. Opposition
SO i do like to see that whenever a mid
major player commits To. Indiana, hey what'd you do Against?
Baylor what'd you do Against? Pitt what do you do Against? Indiana,
matt you talked about the head to head. MATCHUP i
always crack up every year during The quad Three, quad
(31:26):
four non conference home. Games we sit here and go
could some of these be recruiting? Visits like could they actually?
Be you, Know service was getting a guy on the.
Radar And wilkerson had eighteen points Against. Indiana of, Course
indiana won the, game but you, Know wilkerson was was was,
(31:49):
feisty and it always felt like he was one of
those mid major guards you. Watched you're, like, MAN i
would like to see a guard play with that type
of freedom and that type of scoring ability At indiana
and and, look that's exactly what The hoosias were able to.
DO i you Places kentucky On december, twentieth their Rupp, Arena.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Matt that's gonna be. Feisty, yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
You, know it's college basketball. Atmosphere to be honest with,
you AT, RUP i think they'll be pretty hostile for that.
One you feel you feel, THAT i, mean.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
They're gonna be hostile, anyways because It's, indiana and you,
know no matter how much success that program, has they
can't live and pre equal without. Us so you know
That vitrio coming back will be. NICE i mean that
game is gonna be. Fun oh, Yeah like From i'm
gonna take.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
MY iu glasses off for a.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Second Indiana kentucky is always fun to, watch yes for,
sure but Also Indiana kentucky when they're both running a
very offensive minded, system don't be good, Basketball like it's
gonna be a fun watch the neutral that's gonna be
painful for us to, Watch i'm.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Sure but.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
The last, thing, yeah it'll be good.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Basketball pope's teams play good. Basketball mareeze teams play good.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
BASKETBALL i. Hope so IT'S i hope it's a good, Game,
matt because All i've seen over the last couple of
seasons Is indiana fans traveling the places all Over america
losing game by twenty.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Points so you, Know kansas games Stung.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
Marquette, Kansas, Marquette, kentucky And louisville all on the slate
in this non conference, schedule and all three games are
not At Assembly.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Hall so like they gotta get one out of some
of the whole next year they. Got I'm.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
I'm not. Desperate i'm not Saying indiana has to even
win one of those, games BUT i can't stand twenty point.
Losses i'm done with. Those i'm done with. Those compete
play hard if you lose a close. Game, Also i'll you,
Know i'll stomach, that but don't. Crushed wilkerson did have
did have a sentence that really hope The. Bear it
(34:06):
felt like with The Big Blue. Nation, uh you, Know
wilkerson said it was a pleasure to be recruited By,
kentucky but he didn't want to go To he didn't
want to go To kentucky and just be another. Guy
Essentially wilson, saying, hey he wants to go To, indiana
be a, feature be a, factor be a be a
be a featured, player be a significant. Contributor who can blame?
Speaker 3 (34:30):
HIM i don't understand why that would poke The bear at.
Speaker 1 (34:36):
All it triggered.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
HIM i MEAN i don't think triggered him, though because.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
LIKE i don't know if he's the right type of
guy for.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Us then if this is what he, thinks, Dude kentucky
fans have become BUYING iq of seventy.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
Five.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Uh like he was just complimenting how.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Many how good your team, is and also like how
consistent you guys are and how they have always have good,
players and like he wants to be the main. GUY
i don't. Whatever, also just get your money up dog,
like straight, up, like if you're going to complain about
(35:15):
him not committing to your, program we dropped a bag on.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
Him get your bag, up get your money. Straight that's.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
It that's all you gotta. Do anything, Noteworthy, matt from
the Way devrez is. Recruiting is there anything surprising to?
You is there anything that's not surprising to? You anything
you're frustrated? With anything you want to make an observation,
about BECAUSE i have one or two things on top
of my. Mind but you, know you, Know Darren devrees
(35:43):
first month on the job, portal life is crazier than.
Ever there was supposed to be a decision for rev
sharing this type of stuff On april, seventh it got pushed.
Back any thoughts as far As Darren devrees first month
in the portal coming from your side of, THINGS.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
I would say a couple of. OBSERVATIONS i have one.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
The. First the first observation had came to dismay of
a lot OF iu fans and was part of why
a lot OF iu fans panicked, originally which is that
he's not afraid to compete with the big dogs for.
Recruits he's not afraid to swing and, miss WHICH i
think is good for for a. COACH i mean you
(36:29):
saw that right with a lot of the more recent
commitments that didn't go a used. Way you especially saw
that With. Conwell, right he's not afraid to go in
yep and play his best hand and see see if
it you, know see if he?
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Rolls, yeah, uh pocket ass, right like.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
He's. Not he's not afraid to go and fight with
the big.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Boys butting in on one thing With Ryan, conwell like
you can be upset that he went To. Louisville WHAT
i would say to that, is If I'm Ryan, CONWELL
i would go to louis just Because Pat kelsey clearly
clearly got things rolling. Quickly in year one he won
(37:20):
the head to head game Against indiana in lopsided fashion
on a neutral.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Site.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Uh clearly guards can thrive In louisville's system and Then
Pat kelsey's previous system In. Charleston if all, think if
all else is, equal you're gonna go To louisville Over
indiana as things stand right.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Now, YEAH i mean it also again helps when they
drove him bigger bag THAN i just.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Help, right it just makes talks money, talks and that's what's.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
Talking to the. Poor but, yeah, okay so first, off
he's not he's not afraid to be with the big. Boys,
great that's six. BLOCK i felt like actually a lot
of times Under, woodson yeah he would go and get
one big portal, commit but THEN i felt like he
just kind of shied away from a lot of the other,
guys didn't take.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
It quite too.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Seriously and and you, know if he saw a bunch
of big programs surrounding these these these, players it almost
felt like he would back, down right because he.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
Would be, Like i'm goin or. Whatever so that is
just that's just a nice change of.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Pace uh. Two. Uh you KNOW i, originally and you,
know obviously through the commits That i've, COMMITTED i thought
he was going to keep in on, shooting which he, has,
right you, know we got a bunch of good.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
Shooters WHAT i did not expect was that that was
going to be the second thing he, prioritized which was
the first thing he prioritized was.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Passing, yeah, everybody and we talked.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
About, earlier but everybody he's recruited is a, good, able willing,
passer all of, them all of. Them this is going
to be a completely unselfish. Team now it does help.
THEM a lot of them are damn good shooters to
thee their position and their.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
Size but.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Most of the, guys if not all of, them including
the ones we have coming in and maybe are, staying
all very willing passes of the, basketball which will create
a very good team.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Environment and, lastly he's building a.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Team you look up and down the people he's and
the pieces he's putting, together and what he's going and
the type of player he's he's, targeting and which ones
he already has and which ones he's.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Had visiting, now which ones he has visited in the,
past and.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
You go put them all together like little legos. Pieces
you can kind of see what he wants for every single,
position for every single role on the.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
Roster you can see he.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
Wants he wants a passing point guard who on defense
pesters the living crap out of the other. Defense, okay
check probably have that In. Karl you have a backup
point guard that knows the system as brother goes TO
au and is a table setting point, guard and a
guy that can come in and.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
Be a pest on defense as.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Well you got. That you've got your star player who's
your son who's a do it all forward.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
On offense and.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Degrees you've got to do it all star, guard lights
out shooter And wilkerson got. That you've got a, mobile
versatile BIG i can do a ton of different things
and shoot the. Ball check got that In. Bailey and
then you got a young wing in In sicely that
(40:51):
could be a. Guy and you probably have a have
a turning player In. GOODY i can shoot the crap
out the ball and is a willing defender right and tries, sure, Right,
sure that's a great rotation to. Me then that's not
Even we need another big or. Two you need another
probably two guard or two more like a, Cojambo like
(41:16):
there's so much more. Left but then you go and
you look at. That you had the was it The
North florida guy that visited today Time miles you had
in the. Past We Elijah, freeman a wing that in
a project that kind of, uh you, know he. Visited
like if you looked up and down the roster at
(41:36):
all these different kind of, guys now you can kind of, see,
okay he wants to run a nine to ten man, rotation,
right or maybe even an eight nine or man.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
Rotation, okay, well.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
We got like six guys in the roster right now
that are going to be a part of that at
least for good maybe. Seven so you're looking at maybe
a big that's left and you got you got your main,
guys and then the rest of these guys are you,
know young guys who are going to try to stay
in the program for a while and he's going to
try to, uh you, know build them, up or guys
(42:10):
that he might take a swing on that are you,
know maybe you're coming from THE juco, level maybe they're
coming from even THE d two OR d three, level
guys that you, know have, talent just haven't put the
production out. Yet like you're going to see some of
us probably listed with some guys that average like nine
or ten points or whatever at a lower level and be, like,
(42:31):
well why is he getting AN eu?
Speaker 3 (42:32):
Offer Because derees knows that this guy isn't probably going
to get a ton of playing, time AND i.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
You but if on the odd chance he fulfills his,
potential he could very well get playing, time, right and
SO i we could very well see you, KNOW i
you start going after some guys that are you, know
maybe a little bit look down upon.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
Compare it great music for my.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
EARS i love that peratively to the to the recruits
and the portalers THAT i use been looking, at you,
know most.
Speaker 1 (43:08):
Recently, WELL i think that's wonderful BECAUSE i tweeted this
Overund indian AND hq during The National championship.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
Game like.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
Portal, rankings and, again it's not twenty four to seven
sports is, fault but they don't mean anything in the
sense THAT i don't mean. Anything, no a player could
be the best portal prospect For, indiana but the one
(43:38):
hundred and fiftieth best portal prospect FOR ucla or For
Florida state or For. Tennessee mm. Hmm so twenty four
to seven sports is doing their best to take a
stab at.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
It but.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
A guy that plays For houston maybe completely useless At,
indiana or a guy that thrives In indiana maybe completely
useless For. Houston could you envision Watching Umar ballo play At. Florida,
No like that wouldn't have worked based on how they
played their offense and how they play their. System at
(44:17):
the end of the, day there was just one top
ten portal prospect or high school prospect that played in
The national championship game as far as you, know the
primary rotation pieces are. Concerned but From florida's standpoint and
(44:37):
From houston, standpoint they probably feel like they got a
bunch of top ten. Guys. Right Calvin samson is probably
looking At Milo's, uzan who came out Of, oklahoma, saying, hey,
look man U zan is the point GUARD i need
to run my. Stuff, Yeah Todd golden would have Seen Elijah,
(44:57):
martin who is one hundred tw twenty ninth in the
portal rankings out OF fau And Todd golden would have, said, hey, look,
Man Elijah martin's a guy that plays exactly the type
of basketball THAT i want out of my off ball
guard here At. Florida i'm Just i'm surd by the
way that he was one hundred and.
Speaker 3 (45:15):
Rank question it, is but, like if you.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Know Elijah martin went To, PURDUE i don't know if
he would have been as, useful. Right, So like it's
one of those things where it's one of those things
where the coach has to have the vision and that
mindset to really bring a player in and to recruit
him strong and to you, know make sure you're paying
him the right amount and doing all those. THINGS i
like your points that you made About devrez as far
(45:39):
as his portal. Strategy for, me a couple of things
that stood. Out all all the major commits have just
one year. Remaining transistly obviously is multiple years left as
an incoming, Freshman but right now the roster is full
of one year guys And Trent, sisley So'm i'm anticipating
(46:04):
That derees adds players that have multiple years left for roster, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Eleven obviously a lot of guard heavy. Basketball i'm noticing
That Darren deries is just spamming offers to everyone who
enters the. Portal like he's very calculated in his approach
as in terms of who he wants to go and
(46:25):
get as far as the. Portal he's building a, team
building a team with a, vision with an, identity with a,
mindset and that vision identity. Mindset by the, WAY i
think it's guard. Heavy you play through the, Perimeter you
play with versatile players across the board who can do numerous,
things who are, dynamic who can make the opponent uncomfortable in,
(46:46):
many many different.
Speaker 2 (46:47):
Ways, yeah and the last THING i, Said college was
a big game that's WHAT i was told By that's
WHAT i was.
Speaker 8 (46:56):
Told, WELL i, MEAN i mean, true you, KNOW i
say that in, jest but, SURE I i really do
THINK i.
Speaker 3 (47:07):
DON'T i don't appreciate the vitriol that what he got
from the.
Speaker 1 (47:12):
BASE i, mean his Big Man factory was. Legit, yeah it, was.
Speaker 2 (47:18):
It, Was AND i gave us some of the best
Moments i've had in I u sports SINCE i was
there as a. Student so, YEAH i, MEAN i mean and,
Was BUT i, Mean i'm so excited for.
Speaker 1 (47:31):
This the teams, that the teams that the teams that
uh Owned indiana in The woodson. Era it's funny because
like the teams that Own indiana like don't really have, fans,
right like Like northwestern people aren't aren't like going crazy
on social. Media, yeah Like, Nebraska, Iowa, rutgers Like Penn
(47:58):
state was a menace To indiana until this past. Season, yeah,
yeah you don't really. Don't you don't really have much
of an. Argument Like indiana Beat Michigan state last year In,
Breslin like you, know like you, Know Indian it's just
(48:20):
it's just it's just really funny to see those types of.
Things and, yeah the last one or two THINGS i
had about debrez. HERE i wrote down position. Lists it's
kind of what you were. Saying he's recruiting skill sets
rather than OH i need a guard, HERE i need
a forward, HERE i need to center. Here and then
the last, Thing debrees did not make any connections At West.
(48:44):
Virginia that's WHAT i. LEARNED i, mean he brought over
the strength coach who came with him From, DRAKE i
believe Through West. Virginia and then, yeah LIKE i don't
know If i'm. FORGETTING i Think Nick, norton the new,
(49:07):
assistant was also a great.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
Guy he's A drake.
Speaker 1 (49:10):
Guy The bradley assistant who's now something and off the court.
Staff Remember Mike, BARGAIN i mean HE i, MEAN i don't.
KNOW i don't know what his favorite thing was At West.
VIRGINIA i don't know what he appreciated the most during
(49:30):
his one year. There hard to. TELL i don't.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
KNOW i don't.
Speaker 3 (49:34):
Know his, son, yeah the, paycheck but.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
His sons A, Drake, drake you, know Guy Iowa. Drake you,
know like.
Speaker 3 (49:45):
He wasn't there long enough for him to make connections and.
Speaker 2 (49:48):
People there's Some West virginia that's gonna sorry some Way
West virginia. Person oh my, GOSH i have to bleep
out me twice in this. Podcast there was A West
virginia person that is going to find this clip on
our podcast and be, like WELL i.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
KNEW i knew.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
Taker what's? Thinking his Name? Rayne? Yeah and because of, You,
yeah they're thereuated he was one foot out the.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Door Darren. SHAMBLES i do think they made a nice
hire At Ross hodge out In North. Texas, who by the,
way they live In West. VIRGINIA I i do like
the guy that they, Hired Ross. Hodge Ross hodge From North. Texas,
(50:34):
uh it's. Funny, uh you, know you get all butt
hurt About indiana take you, know talking to your coach
during the. Season at least we waited until after your
season ended to make the, hire unlike you when you
when you made the announcement official While Ross hodge was
still coaching his team In uh the N i t.
(50:56):
Uh so you know when not be, hypocritical let's you,
know maybe think about that. Today that's the that's the
that's the lesson of.
Speaker 3 (51:06):
Today you're speaking too much sense for a.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
Fan The COLLECTIVE iq of. Twelve, yeah for, sure. Thanks, yeah.
Speaker 1 (51:18):

Speaker 3 (52:48):
You guys can look out for.
Speaker 2 (52:49):
That if you made at the end of the, podcast
probably be out by the Time you're all, Right i'm
are you talking about?
Speaker 3 (52:54):
IT i, Mean i'm excited to kind of see.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
Where they, next given THAT i feel like we've gotten
most of the scoring done at this point in the,
roster so kind of are we going more decent defensive
minded for the rest of the? Editions are we going potential?
Minded i'm assuming probably a little bit of? That and
(53:19):
where where are they?
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Going are they going high? Major are they going they
going low? Major are they going mid?
Speaker 2 (53:26):
Major are they GOING d, ONE d? Two be you,
know community? COLLEGE i, don't you.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
Know i'm. INTERESTED i see what level they are going
to and whose connections they. Are that's also SOMETHING i
get with a lot of the new staff coming.
Speaker 2 (53:45):
In you, know kind of who's getting to say and
who's actually getting their people into the program will be
a thing That i'll be keeping an eye on.
Speaker 3 (53:57):
For over the next couple of weeks makes total.
Speaker 1 (54:00):
Sense, YEAH i mean to, me one of the questions
we've talked about on this podcast for the LAST i
don't know really since THE nil, era so we'll say
like the last two three, years it was just like
who is really calling the? Shots who is really running
the program as far As indiana men's basketball is. Concerned,
(54:24):
LIKE i Know signetty RUNS au, FOOTBALL i Know Terry
moore and runs women's. Basketball it's just felt like over
the last few years there have been a lot of
voices that have had a vote in what's going on
with men's. Basketball AND i do feel like with the
Moves direes has made over the first month of portal,
(54:46):
season LIKE i feel Like drees is building his, team
like he's building his. Roster he's playing his style of
basketball he wants to play that he feels like can
be successful over the course of the college basketball Season
Big ten, season you see it with the guard, play
with the, versatility with the. PERIMETER i Watched drake play
(55:08):
in person When drees was the head coach when they
Faced miami in the round of sixty. Four Before indiana
faced Ken state In, albany a couple of years. Ago
that Was indiana's LAST Ncaa tournament. Win Like drake played
