Speaker 1 (00:06):
Time has come, folks. This is it. The non conference
late is over. Indiana went three and ohero Unsurprisingly, However, Hey,
as Kurtzignetti pointed out, old dominion pretty decent, ain't they?
Who's just made it easy? May it look simple? Win?
(00:29):
Probability was never threatened. I use now a top twenty
football team and number nine is coming to our house.
Kurtzignetti wanted this chance last year. He never got it.
He wanted to face a great team at the Rock
at Memorial Stadium at Merchant Banks Merchants Bank Field, presented
(00:54):
by Cindy Simon Scott. That's not true. All right, Look,
this is it. This is it. This is the best
game of the week end, whatever college game they wants
to gaslight us about. This is This is the matchup
of the weekend in college football, and it's going to
take place in Bloomington, Indiana, Illinois, Indiana. The Alini and
the Hoosier is a proper Big ten, traditional matchup. Matt
(01:16):
and I are going to dive into all of it, folks.
That's what we're talking about today and so much more
here on episode three fifty one of the Hoosiers Sound
where the official podcasts of Indiana HQ. We're recording this
edition of the Hoosier Sound Wednesday, September seventeenth, twenty twenty five.
I'm your host Nathan Christian. Here with me is my
normal co host, Matt Lukens. Matt time is here Illinois
(01:43):
and then Iowa and then Oregon. Indiana is off to
a three and oh start. We'll dive into the matchup
in full here in short notice, but three and oh start.
Indiana's looking good. A little bit of a bumpy defensive
effort here and there against Oldmeian, but all in all,
what are your thoughts on this three and I'll start
from the Hoosiers.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Well, I mean they've done as well as I thought
they would have. Again, we both talked about how on
the last podcast we most previous podcast we did there's
a chance that they struggled with one of these teams,
right like you saw it last year. Again, the script
from last year is basically repeating it so again over
(02:25):
and over again. Now, to be fair, we're getting much
more high profile games compared to last year. But you
play the first three games, you smoke all three teams,
go into Week four, your first real test against the
power five opponent. This one just happens to be a
top ten team, but you know, you know, you know,
(02:46):
a top tier opponent, and last year we showed out
in that game, and I fully expect, until proven otherwise,
that this year will be exactly the same.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Wow, I will say, do this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I say.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Last thing I'll say is I've really liked the first
couple of games. How we've seen offense grow and growing pains.
In game one, they looked a little bit better. In
Game two, they looked unstoppable. In game three. To be fair,
the opponents have gotten worse in all three games, but
still they are executing at a high level, and with
(03:25):
good execution comes good opportunities against good teams. So I
think it's fine, and we'll get a real litmus test
of where this team is at this weekend. Hopefully they
put a make make a lot of people look wrong,
because right now Illinois Wait is very highly rated.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
When I think I think they're a good football team,
they're damn good football.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
They're better than I expected.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
They're better than I expected as well. However, all that
being said, they are being this highly ranked based off
of a win a duke team that has not looked
fantastic since they've played, and a win against South Carolina
last year, who, by the way, lost thirty four to
seven at home against Vanderbilt this weekend. So like again,
(04:14):
maybe maybe, just maybe some people are hyping up Illinois
when they really should be hyping up the Hoosiers more so,
we'll find out this weekend.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I mean, I respect what Illinois has done. I came
into this season thinking they were like a seven and
five team because I looked at last year and their
games against Purdue against Northwestern and I was very underwhelmed
going to Nebraska winning in overtime, and they've proven me wrong.
(04:46):
It's not so much that they're winning games even if
you're not a big fan of their opponents. But like,
they went to Duke and won convincingly right forty five nineteen,
And it was one of those games where they had
to weather a little bit of stuff in the first quarter,
second quarter, and then they turned on the killer instinct,
the Mariano rivera closer gene in the second half. I mean,
(05:09):
they wrecked Duke after halftime, and there were some signals there, right,
it was a situation where hey, they turned Duke into
a one dimensional offense. Yep, that was the end of it.
I mean, once that happened for Duke, it was doun.
They confused Indiana former Indiana commit Brock Lowry, former Indiana
(05:34):
offensive coordinator Walt Bell significantly. Illinois beat Western Michigan thirty
eight nothing this past weekend, and again it's one of
those situations where Western Michigan struggled to get two hundred
yards of offense. I am pretty impressed by where Illinois
is to this point.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
To be fair, though a right hand turn would confuse
Walt Bell at which way to turn.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
We've said some pretty insulting things about Walt Bell this podcast.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
And deserved from what I had to watch him put
me through. Deserved. He did a terrible job, an awful job.
It was not good with a talent that, by the way,
that went everywhere.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Well. We even talked about that, I think the podcast
right after Tom Allen was fired. It's like within a
week every one of Indiana's players were called up by
high level power conference programs and it was like, well baby,
I mean, heck, you even saw Brendan Soresby this past
week and put up the top. He's very good and
(06:40):
so it's it's crazy that we are where we are
right now. Illinois and Indiana have, you know, overcome some
stuff to get to this point. I think that's a
pretty key part of the storyline coming into this game. Obviously,
Indiana's turned things around very quickly. But remember this Illinois
(07:01):
program had a two and six season during COVID. They
had a five and seven season twenty twenty three. They're
now thirteen and three since the start of last season.
Indiana is fourteen and two since the start of last season.
We're talking about two Big Ten teams that have not
always been at the top of the league thriving in
(07:25):
this new era of college football. Yeah, if you haven't
adjusted to the sport over the last couple of years,
you don't get the benefit of the doubt from me.
I'm looking at you, you know, Florida, right like, I'm
happy what you did ten years ago, but the way
(07:47):
the sport looks now is very different. I'm looking at
you USC. You know, you might be all right, USC
might have a CSP type of season, but you know,
we have to still see it in order for it
to get there. You know, I'm looking at the you know, Arkansas,
I'm looking at you know, schools like it's just one
(08:11):
of those things where I sit here and I'm like,
my god, how can we keep talking about the same
stuff over and over again. I'm looking at Clemson, right,
team that you know has had a lot of struggles
here over the last couple of years, when the context
and the grand scheme of things in the sport has
really changed. Illinois and Indiana have been much better than Clemson,
(08:34):
much better than Florida since it started the twenty twenty
four season. That's it's all on the short of it.
And so if you want to sit here and by
the way I said us see i'm talking about Nebraska,
I'm talking about Michigan right since it started the twenty
four season two, Like, the sport is so different now
than it was two years ago. Illinois Indiana have done
(08:55):
as good of a job as anybody, and this matchup
is being built as sort of a CFP playing game.
Like you said, litmus test, Matt, I would lean more
toward what you said, like I don't think either one
of these teams should be eliminated from the CFP conversation
with the loss, obviously, they'll have some work to do
if they do lose this game, but I'm looking forward
(09:19):
to seeing both of these teams remain in the top
twenty five. Even if they lose, We'll see what actually happens.
But again, Illinois come out. They've looked awesome. There are
some big matchups here. Indiana, the Hoosiers have looked great.
And I you know, Matt and I were talking before
this podcast about how, like you know, Fernando Mendoza has
looked really good through three games so far. And then yes,
(09:42):
as you pointed out, Mat, the growth, the improvement in
his decision making as the season's gone on has been
very noticeable. I'm looking forward to seeing him get tested
against the top level defense. To this point, Indiana, for
the most part, is avoided injury outside elite BB. Now
this will give Kobe Martin a chance to be a
second or third complimentary running back option, but otherwise injury wise,
(10:05):
Indiana has gotten to this point pretty cleanly. The Indiana's
running the ball effectively three hundred yards on the ground
each of the first three games, I believe, which is unbelievable.
The passing attacks has looked awesome, The defense has looked
very good. They've stayed healthy a little bit of improvement
can be made, for sure, especially looking back to that
(10:25):
Old Dominion game, or they give up two big rushing
touchdowns to the quarterback. But Colton Joseph had Old Dominions
seems to be a pretty solid group of five qb that,
you know, kurtz Signetti might get in touch with down
the road. Probably. We've talked about this before, Matt in
(10:47):
this day and age. Yeah, these non conference games in
football or men's basketball or women's basketball, they're not like,
you know, they're not just by games anymore.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
They're private scrimmages with the they're public, private scrimmagers.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
They're not just buy games anymore. You know, Hey, Colton Joseph,
Hey some of the some of the defensive guys on
Old Dominion that did a very good job once Indiana
got into the red zone. You know, we'll see, we'll
see how many Monarchs end up in Cream and Crimson
here next year in a couple of next year. All in,
(11:25):
although thoroughly impressed with what Indiana has done, I just
think both of these teams have proven that they should
have been preseason like preseason top fifteen, and now I
feel like both of these teams should be top ten.
Illinois is Illinois is? But what are the sportsbooks told
you Indiana should be favored even if this game, even
(11:48):
if this game was on a neutral site Indiana, Indiana
is favored at home, sure, but because of the way
the spread is, if you take out the two two
and a half three points for home field advance and
Indiana is still favored. So the books are disagreeing with
the AP poll voters, who have you know, clearly shown
(12:10):
that there's a wide range as far as how seriously
they take that job. And here's where we are at
two excellent teams playing the marquee game of the weekend
at Bloomington, Indiana. How about that?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
It's awesome by a side tangent to In order to
vote in the A people, you should have to pass
IQ just or.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Justa's watch this.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
That's the thing that you should have to stream yourself
as an AP voter sitting in front of the TV
watching nothing but college football all fucking day. Sorry, all
freaking day. I'm so mad about this. Sorry, you're gonna
have to edit that up. But I'm so mad about
this because I sit there online, I look at these
(12:53):
stupid people with the pole it's such a wide range.
And who watched South Carolina play last weekend and ranks
them tents tense with.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
A quarterback injury, like.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
They thirty four to seven at home to Vanderbilt, who,
by the way, might be good, but yeah, lost thirty
four to seven at ame. You shouldn't be ranked after
you use thirty four to seven at home. Ever, sorry
for dropping efforts. Well, this is off.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
That's why I really like how ant has has collaborated
with Indiana HQ for US and several other Big ten
accounts because I know for sure that the folks who
are in that power pole do pay attention. Now, you
don't have to agree, you don't have to agree with them,
and there are a wide range of opinions there. But
like at some point, you know, the issue is that
(13:48):
the AP pole is significant as far as notes and
nuggets that college football programs put into their press releases.
You know, college football Hall of Fame inductions are based
a lot of time on Hey, you know what happened
as far as the AP top twenty five is concerned,
(14:10):
ranked wins on ranked wins. This that whatever, it's significant,
it's meaningful, it's profound. You don't have to like that
that's the case, but my gosh, that's the way it is.
Take it seriously anyway. Yeah, it's it's really frustrating to
see that sort of thing. But now it's you know,
it's it's sort of put up or shut up time
in the sense that Indiana now gets a home team,
(14:34):
a home game, I should say, against the Marquee team,
and let's get let's get talking about the matchup. Man
Illinois comes to Memorial Stadium seven point thirty kickoff on
NBC No Eagle. I believe is on the is on
the call on the todd Ermeister. As we pointed out,
(14:56):
Indiana is a four and to a half five and
a half point favorite, depending on where you look. The
over unders at fifty two and a half. I tell
you that the final score in this game, according to
the books, will be something like twenty eight twenty four,
twenty nine to twenty four. Is appointment TV. Clear your schedule,
We have it already, hopefully have tickets. The game is
(15:17):
sold out. The temperature on Saturday should be magical. The
conditions will be perfect for football. The sun will be
out as it sets around seven thirty Eastern time, and
then you'll get a full on primetime setting. It's a
little bit different than the last game that was the
(15:38):
last you know, sort of big night game, Power Conference,
Big ten night game in Memorial Stadium, which was that
bucket game where it was snowing and all that sort
of thing. Not going to be the case Saturday evening
when you're talking about upper seventies, sunset, twilight hour. A
(16:00):
lot of ways to dissect this matchup. Man Obviously, Luke
Altmeyer is the QB one at Illinois. He's off to
an excellent start this season. Illinois went into Duke. They
can beat you through the air, they can beat you
on the ground, they could beat you with defense. What's
the first thing you're looking at as far as this
matchup is concerned Top twenty teams, We feel like they're
really Top ten Illinois Indiana Saturday Night.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
I'm actually not even looking at the teams. I'm looking
at the coaching battle. That's what I'm looking at. Because
Beelim is a guy that's been there, done that. Like
he's competed at a high level in the Big Ten before.
So like him having a team in the top ten
and competitive, built on defense, running the cold on He's
(16:47):
done this before at Wisconsin. We've seen him do this before.
This is not this is not new territory.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
For by the way, I think Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin
wants him. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, that was really the fire up there. Looking back
on it, so stupid. Anyways, No, like the one that
has everything to prove is is Signetti in this matchup. Yeah,
you get a top ten team at home when you've
been clamoring for fans to come out to the games
right to watch this team play, which I mean they should,
(17:20):
but you know, irregardless, you got to stand on business.
You're also last year you didn't beat a ranked team, right,
and so again this will be your first rank to
win as the head coach of Indiana, and you've been
talking like Indiana should be at a higher level nationally
(17:41):
than they are currently being respected as. So you got
to put up or shut up. This is the game.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
This is the game.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
This sets the tone for the rest of the season
because you go out there and you are underprepared and
the team looks frazzled and no one's ready to and
there's a bunch of penalties and Illinois just comes out
runs it down our throats wins the game, there's gonna
be nothing but talk about us being frauds from here
(18:10):
until the end of the season unless we somehow miraculously
beat both Oregon and Penn State and Illinois ends up
being just like a top five team, which thing might.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Be even if they do win and blue if they
do win in Bloomington. But again, the first part I
think is the biggest thing. You're gonna go to Iowa City,
You're gonna go to Eugene, and you're gonna go to
Penn State.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Like, you gotta win this. You have a you have
a prime win opportunity at home. You have to take
advantage of this. This has to be This has to
be Signetty's best coach game, maybe of his career, if
he really wants things to get rolling in Bloomington, if
he really wants things this season to do well, if
(18:51):
he really wants to look, let's face it, Kurt's old
like coach SIG's old. If he wants to get this
program really rolling and where he wants it to be.
It started last year, but it launches off of this game,
especially for this season, to get the Dominoes really really
going in the direction you want them to be going.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, look, he's accomplished so much, right,
like across his time at JMU and now in Indiana.
Get absolutely, fourteen and two is an unbelievable record to
this point eight and one in Big Ten play? Do
(19:33):
you have what you want now? Right? The foundation's been
a set, the platform has been established. Now you get
a top ten team coming to your building and.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
They are every the opportunity. This is the opportunity he's
been talking about since he was at the basketball game
saying Burdue, Michigan and Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
It's like this, he knew something, you know, he didn't
say Illinois, and he must have known. He had an inkling,
he had an inclination that. Of course, Ohio State ended
up winning it all. But you know it's noticeable, you know,
like Illinois Indiana have done an amazing job since the
start a last season. I mean, for me, like the
coaching matchup for sure. You know, defensive coordinator Aaron Henry,
(20:15):
for example, yesterday, has said a lot of praiseworthy things
about where Indiana is right now. He's done a great
job at Illinois. The offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator in Debiloma.
You know, yeah, very much interest interested to see, you know,
which Big Ten coordinators get coaching interviews here in this
(20:37):
upcoming off season. But one of the key matchups I'm
paying attention to is the trench battle. Like, I don't
think much more needs to be said, especially when you
look at Indiana's performance in that area against Notre Dame
in Ohio state Notre Dame in that order. Kritzignetti called
(20:58):
it out point blank. He told Big Ten Network during
media days, you know, we've got to get better up
front to beat the big boys. And Illinois is a
big boy. Yep. They got some big boys on their
team do well, especially on the defensive front. They remind
(21:23):
me a lot of those peak Wisconsin teams. They remind
me a lot of you know, some of the great
teams we've seen in the Big Ten. I don't know
if I'll go so far as to say they're as
good as the you know, Aiden Hutchinson or Kenneth Grant,
Mason Graham defensive lines that we saw at Michigan in
recent years, but they're very close. They're very close. And yeah,
(21:46):
Indiana had to start Zen Mahal's get right tackle because
Khalil Benson was out with a violation to team rules
at the end of the day, right like the five
guys up front have to be on top of their
game against Illinois. Gay Baccus is a pass rusher whose
(22:07):
name you need to know. He wears number seventeen for Illinois.
He was at Big Ten media days representing Illinois. If
he lines up against Carter Smith, you feel pretty good.
Carter Smith is an excellent left tackle. Yes, he lines
up on the other side against bray Lynch, Sen Mahalski,
Khil Benson. Indiana's gonna have to figure some things out
(22:32):
as a game planning, you know, from a game planning standpoint,
because that's not you know, that's something Indiana is going
to have to adjust to. This Illinois defense is very, very,
very good. You know, we talked about how they did
an excellent job against Duke when we talked about that matchup.
(22:52):
They gave a four hundred and thirty eight yards, but
they eliminated Duke running game. Yeah, I mean they you know,
Duke tried running about the quarterback with the running backs. Nothing,
I mean, absolutely nothing as far as the ground game
was concerned. Illinois ended up winning that game forty five
to nineteen largely because of the way they erased the
(23:16):
rushing effort. And I don't have to get into what
Illinois did against Western Illinois or Western Michigan. They completely
dominated those two opponents. So you know, Matt's gonna look
at the coaching matchup. I'm looking at the trenches. Of course.
On the other side, I think Indiana does have the
upper hand in the sense of we throw out Kellen Wyatt,
(23:38):
Stephen Daley and Jose Wheeler and Tyreek Tucker, Mikhale Kamara
against an Illinois offensive line that has been a little
bit shaky. Yeah, and so it's not just a matter
of oh man, ill You know, Illinois has all the
advantages all the event. No, it's not the case at all.
(24:00):
Huge advantage for Indiana in this matchup is where, you know,
is is this this defense, this defensive front in particular
having a very good opportunity against Illinois's offensive line and
(24:21):
all in all, like it's been, it's been an uphill
battle center Josh Krutz for Illinois, the center through three
games has given up five pressures. That's not what the
center should be doing. No, that's right guard Brandon Henderson,
another interior offensive Lineman has given up three pressures to
(24:44):
this point for the ALIGNI you know, tackle J. C.
Davis has given up a couple. Melvin Priestley his PFF
grade to this point is forty four. He's the starting
right tackle for so there are ways Indiana can take
advantage here of an Illinois offensive line. I'm looking forward
(25:06):
to seeing the trench battle go into this thing. I mean,
we talked about this in the off season, Matt, but like,
before we dig even further into this matchup, like I
want to set a minute or two to talk about
how Indiana in the off season lost CJ. West to
(25:32):
the NFL Draft, He lost James Carpenter to graduation. Yeah,
it lost Mike Kaddock to barstool.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
The way Signetti revamped the trenches on both sides of
the ball, to me is kind of the story of
this game, is it not?
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Absolutely? A lot of our best trance. First, our most
hype transfers came on the D line and line. These
these are guys that came in and were like, Okay,
they got holds, we got holes to fill. We filled them, right,
we filled We got these bodies coming in. They are
gonna be good.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
It's awesome.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
It's time to put up for shut up. You're playing
against the team you got you. You got a chance
here against the team that has legit like a legit
D line and you and you as a defensive line
that has looked a little bit suspect to the first
couple of games, you have a chance to really expose
an Illinois offensive line that has shown weakness throughout the
(26:41):
beginning of the year. So let's do it.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
Let's see it.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Let's do it. Let's see see it.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
I mean, show me something. And you're talking about Mario
Landino in house, guy who has who has continued progressing. Uh,
I'm talking about Isaiah Jones, who's done a good job
getting into the backfield. Relijah Hardy. I know he's a linebacker,
but you know he's part of the blitz packages that
get into the backfield and and go out and do
(27:08):
their thing. It's incredible to see a coach talk about
trenches as much as Signetti has recruit to it, win
those battles and then see those guys thrive, thrive on
the field like that. That bit alone is why you
(27:31):
should feel comfortable at India about Indiana's long term future.
Of course, we want them to win in the short
term future like Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
But as all the time, all the time.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
But you know, the way you build up the defensive line,
the pass rush through Kamara Landino, Stephen Daily, Jose, We
Tyreek Tucker coming at you in waves. Dominique Gratliffe has
had good snaps, Kellen White has had good snaps. This
(28:09):
is where that type of approach, that type of mentality
pays off. We've said it before on this podcast. We've
never seen Indiana do this before. On the Trenches, Pat
Coogan bringing Khalil Benson back. It's it's really impressive. And
(28:30):
this is where you go up against a team like
Illinois that's had a bit of a little bit of
a you know, a bumpy ride on the offensive line.
Iowa next week and again these games come fast and furious. Now, Matt,
you know, yeah, we road trip to Kinnick the following Sunday,
(28:50):
Saturday afternoon. You know, Iways got a shaky offensive line.
We'll talk about that matchup next week. But man like,
it comes at you now in waves and you're not
relying on one guy, You're relying on seven or eight
or nine. And that's why I'm really excited to see
what Indiana is capable of doing here. We'll talk more
about this matchup in just a sec, but first it's
time for who won the week this past week? And
(29:13):
I use sports and we can really talk about you know,
several different things here. Hey, how about Lamar Wilkerson who
made a donation to Sam Houston State based on a
comment he made to the Field of sixty eight. How
about someone like Kyle Schwarber who continues doing big time
things with the Philadelphia Phillies, the former Hoo's you're hitting
(29:35):
bombs left, right, and center, and the race for the
MLB home run title. How about the men's soccer team
that's doing awesome stuff here. They were previously ranked number
one in the country for a bit of an annoying
loss to Michigan, but the Hoosiers are right in the
mix as far as the national title is concerned. Looking
forward to seeing coach e Aglely do his thing the
rest of the way. You know, Indiana guys doing good
(29:58):
things in the NFL as well, and so McKenzie Holmes
in the playoffs, the Seattle Storm. Incredible come from behind
win for the Storm last night against the Aces, and
the and the w NBA playoffs, so they'll have a
decisive Game three. There a lot of great stuff here.
Grace Berger had a very good finish to the regular
(30:18):
season with the Dallas Wings, and now Grace and actually
I know and like contributed. Like Dallas's performance directly improved
thanks to grays Burger seeing the court. And so now
Grace and McKenzie will both play in Australia in the
off season. What's the w NBA season wraps up? So, uh,
you know, Matt's going to be our our Eastern Hemisphere.
(30:43):
I you Women's basketball correspondent? Yep, yeah, absolutely, keeping track
of the Australian league over there. So a lot of
great stuff going around across Who's your nation? Everyone? Everyone? Everyone?

One of the things I like doing when I you know,
break down a match up here too, top twenty five teams,
(31:26):
two top twenty teams according to eight people, to top
ten teams. If you ask me in my heart of hearts,
I kind of like breaking it down into four ways. Okay,
you know, Indiana's rushing offense against the other team's rushing defense,
Indiana's passing offen think the other team's passing defense, the
(31:47):
other team's run against our defense. Like the four ways.
So if you look at the four matchups run OVERSUS
run D, PASSOVERSUS pass D for both teams, which of
those four do you feel like Indiana has the biggest advantage,
the biggest edge going into Saturday Nights game.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Oh, this is a good question. I think it's going
to be our run defense versus their run attack because
I don't like what I've really seen from the secondary.
And to be honest, I think Illinois defense is very solid.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
I don't think we really that's pretty impressive. You're saying
that because Old Dominion did rip off a couple of
big runs, you still feel pretty good about our run
defense against Illinois rushing attack.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Old Dominion ripped off a bunch of big runs, doing
something that they hadn't really done. The previous year, so
there was there wasn't a ton of film on them
doing what.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
They did, right, But their quarterback for the first half
of last year is now in Indiana, Hoosier Grant Wilson,
this cool threat guy came came along said can have
last year to your point, right, right, So this.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Was this was some newer tape, some newer stuff that
I you just wasn't as uh filled up on that
they've We've we stifled every other team we've played, like
running the ball. It has not been an issue in
the other two games at all to me, So I
think that is more indicative of our run defense compared
(33:25):
to first game getting some of the rust off, and
also the fact that they were running some stuff that
they just hadn't seen before. So yeah, I mean Illinois's
definitely shown enough tape now where they'll be fully prepared
and I think they can stifle Allois defense. And I
want Altemeyer to throw it, like I beg that is
(33:47):
this IU team to make all my throw because I
think he's just a very average QB.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
So wow, really you think he's average.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
I think he's like slightly above average. But like, yeah, world,
I think Mendoza is better than him by a significant margin.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
I can I can see what you're saying there. I
can't see what you're saying. Uh. Fifth season of college
football for Luke Altmeyer.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
From Mississippi, Yeah, ole miss Uh.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
He's had a very good start to the season as
far as his PFF grade is concerned. But for what
it's worth, Week one was a little bit shaky. Similar
situation to Fernando Mendoza. There uh no turnover worthy plays
yet for Luke Altmeyer. He's played. He's played a perfect
(34:47):
three weeks as far as awarding those turnover worthy plays
according to Pro Football Focus. But last year, get fourteen
of them for the entirety of the season, and if
that resurfaces itself, you're going to get a situation where, hey,
Indiana could potentially force several takeaways. The big road game
(35:09):
Illinois played at Penn State last year was a game
where Luke Altmeyer had four turnover worthy plays. He was
pretty good when they went to Nebraska and won in overtime,
but even when they went to Oregon Week nine last
year had a couple of turnover worthy plays. His two
worst games his two worst games of the season last
year were at Penn State and at Oregon, and there
(35:31):
were significantly worse than what he did the rest of
the season. Yeah, including a bowl game where he was
very good against South Carolina. But to your point, you know,
you put him on the road against what we think
is a top ten level team in Indiana, and if
it shows up as something similar to that road trip
(35:52):
to Oregon last year, the road trip to Penn State
last year, Luga Altmeyer might be in for a tough
evening for me. I really want to say that Indiana's
run game is going to poke holes at Illinois run defense.
(36:16):
But you know what, I'm not gonna overthink it. Let
the let the let the let the passing attack unleash.
I guess it's Illinois against this Illinois pass defense. And
you know, especially when I look at the weather here,
it doesn't look like right now there's gonna be much
wind in the air either on Saturday night. This is
(36:39):
the foundation of Indiana football, isn't it? Under Kurt Signetti yep,
quarterback development, intermediate and advanced passing concepts. And what we
saw against Ohio State and Notre Dame where games where
Curtis Schwark didn't do his best. In fact, he did
his worst, much like we're talking about ho Luke all
(37:00):
Meyers struggled at Oregon at Penn State, Kurtis Shark struggled
that Ohio State at Notre Dame. Yeah, let's see Fernando Mendoza,
y know, rip off the fireworks against the right to
the occasion, especially when you consider that Duke had a
lot of success throwing the football in a one dimensional
(37:23):
state back in Week two. By the way, a Duke
team that is worse than Old Dominion in several analytical models.
Right now, Kurt Signetti, I'm sure would like for you
to know that you know, Duke had a lot of
success throwing the football. Darien Mensa accumulated over three hundred
passing yards in that game, and he is not the
level of quarterback that Fernando Mendoza is Elija are at
(37:48):
Omar Cooper. My big question though, is is there a
third receiver that's going to step up. One of the
things we talked about preseason is that Indiana's third receiver
might be the running backs.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Well, our best receiving running back is now gone for
the season.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
So hey, I'm looking forward to seeing Rome and Hemby
do that work, you know, pick up the slack a
little bit there. Of course, I texted my brother during
the game Saturday night that excuse me last Friday night
that Kobe Martin, you know, starting running back in twenty
(38:30):
twenty six and lo and be maybe soon after that
we got the news, of course BB was injured. But
soon after that, on Monday, we got the news BB
was out for the season. Yeah, Kobe Martin, man, he
looks awesome. And again, this is somebody who's very passionate
and prideful about the a football program in state.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Guy, rivalry game, Oh okay, okay, okay, Oh, it's not
a rivalry. And we don't have rivalry with Illinois.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
Big big classic, Big Ten matches.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Classic Big Ten matchup. If this was basketball, we have
a rivalry. But this is football, and Illinois fans, Illinois
fans want to make it a rivalry. It's there. I
U has two rivals in football, right, they have two.
It's Kentucky and per Kentucky. Okay, all right, And you
(39:27):
guys are in the same category as Ohio State in
Michigan and Wisconsin and the rest of the teams that
we all hate equally as much. But that's only because
we have to see you guys every year, like or
every other year, however long we see you guys, very awful, right, Yeah,
Illinois is not a rival. I agree. Notre Dame is
(39:53):
more of a rival to Indiana than Illinois is.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
Yeah, yeah, I see your point.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Is more than Illinois.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
Uh, we'll see here. EJ. Williams has taken a step
up at wide receiver, so potentially.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Each Brady's looked decent the last couple of eight, last
two games, Brady has gotten a lot more catches, so.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
You know, it's fascinating. If Signetti leans into Jonathan Brady
a little bit more, you'll see Cooper pushed out wide.
If Signetti leans into EJ. Williams a little bit more,
you'll see Cooper moved into the slot. The interesting thing
is Illinois's best corner is their slot corner. So as
you dig into the match, Obxavier Scott has been very good.
(40:39):
He does move around quite a bit for Illinois. But
you know, if they put him in the slot all
of a sudden, now you might see opportunities free up
for Elijah Surratt out wide, or EJ. Williams out wide,
or Omar Cooper out wide against the boundary corners for Illinois,
something to keep an eye out for, so you know.
All in all, Matt says, Hey, you know what, our
(41:00):
run defense is going to do a great job here
in this matchup. That's where Matt thinks we have the
biggest edge. I'm saying, let the ballfly, baby, let the
let the let the air attack.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Why do things happen? Why can't we both be right?
Speaker 1 (41:14):
And then why can we not also have our past
defense shut down Luke Altmeyer? And then why can't our
running game also puncture Illinois for three hundred yards?
Speaker 2 (41:24):
It's very it's very possible that we just blow the
doors off. Well, Matt, is very possible.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
We'll make our prediction here in just a sec, but

Indiana dot HQ?
Speaker 1 (41:58):
You can find us there. Let's make our predictions, Matt,
and then dive into some big ten picks of the week.
As we mentioned earlier, Indiana is a four and a
half five and a half point favorite depending on the book.
Try to get a four four and a half if
you can. It looks like this line is getting pushed
out a little bit more. I saw six floating around
(42:19):
last night. I see five and a half floating right now.
Four four and a half is a key number. Four
four is a key number. You get the four, that'd
be great. Indiana projected to win according to the books
again twenty eight, twenty four, twenty nine to twenty four.
Bill Connolly's SMP plus model indicates something basically identical Indiana
(42:40):
by four twenty eight twenty four. Matt, who do you
have winning this game? And by how much?
Speaker 2 (42:49):
I have? Of course, Indiana winning this game. Now, my
brain is split in two directions which to take this prediction,
Because the safe prediction is to say that this is
a close game. This is like a twenty seven to
twenty four, a thirty one to twenty three closest game
(43:09):
right one score game. However, I don't play safe on
this podcast, Boy, and I never have Oh boy, I
never have Indiana comes into Bloomington or Illinois comes into
Bloomington and lays a stinker, A stinky, stinky stinker. I
(43:30):
have Illinois losing to our Indiana Hoosiers by the score
of thirty four to fourteen.
Speaker 1 (43:41):
Who is your player of the game, Brananda.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Mendoza, right were they slight shout out, slight shout out
to d'angelu Ponds who gets two picks?
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Does Idianna want to beat Illinois by a lot? Oh? Yeah, okay,
you know what, Look, you know what happened, though, man,
I know what's gonna, know what.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
Happens, But I don't care if that happens, because I
have had some Illinois fans in my life chirping me
the last eight months. That's they're gonna so good that
they're gonna come into Bloomington and somehow beat us after
we made the playoffs, and then they beat a mediocre
(44:33):
South Carolina team and then they get ranked above us. Okay, yeah, come, come, come, come.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
To come to We talked way too much about the
ap pole in here. We've talked a lot about nil
transfer portal in here. That is the foundation of college football.
Isn't it that you can talk crap to your friends.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
To your to.
Speaker 1 (44:59):
The to enter the other school across the border.
Speaker 2 (45:03):
About two teams, by the way, whose odds to win
the title are very very slim, to play for a
national title, very possible to win a national title. Both
of these teams are on the very much on the
outside looking in. But that doesn't matter, because it's just
this is why we love the sport. This is why
what makes college sports awesome. You don't have to win
(45:25):
the championship to have bragging rights. You've gotta win the game.
You gotta win a play to win the game, win
the game.
Speaker 1 (45:33):
Uh I was thinking about that a lot watching Georgia
at Tennessee last Saturday.
Speaker 2 (45:39):
You gotta play to win the game.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
Play and just how like I don't know. Obviously, a
team like Georgia is always in the national title makes
but man, if like Tennessee makes that kick at the end,
how much nonsense is Tennessee Nation Vall nation talking growing
(46:04):
back at all their Georgia friends and family and colleagues
and this and that for the next year. Because it's
not NFL. You don't get two divisional matchups, you get
one if that all right?
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Those two fan bases are about as close to each
other as as you possibly can crazy, right, Like the
Tennessee Georgia line is like what like the Indiana Louisville
ye fan bases, but that's only in Louisville, Like it
is blended in between. Yeah, on that line there, it's
it's in Georgia and Georgia fans and Tennessee Like, yeah,
(46:40):
they they're in the.
Speaker 1 (46:41):
Same work with each other. They're in the same schools,
they're in the same you know, camps, they're in the
same this, that, whatever, you know, the same same grocery,
the same grocery store whenever they have to get food
for the week, Like Tennessee then missed the cake and
that she was now on the other foot where it's
(47:02):
just Georgia Bulldogs for the next forever. Right Like man.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
Hype, I think his own kicker is just one of
the stupidest things I ever seen in my life.
Speaker 1 (47:15):
That was nuts. I do have Indiana winning this game, too, Matt,
I have it close.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
I that's the safe bet.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
Well, it is, you're right, But at the same time,
I think what it's rooted in for me is that
there are two teams that have really impressed me through
three games in the Big Ten. Oregon in Illinois Oregon
sixty nine to three. I think it was the final
over Oklahoma State. And I know Oklahoma State's a poor
Power four team, but like I poor in multiple ways apparently.
(47:48):
But all I'm saying is, like Oregon against Northwestern, I mean,
they looked awesome against Oregon State, I think they'll look
awesome THGA. It's Oklahoma State. They looked awesome. That was
not the case last year where they sort of scraped
by Idaho and Boise State before going undefeated in the
regular season. Illinois looked wow, like fantastic. So it's just
(48:13):
a respect tip of the cat to Illinois. Brad Beelma
is a good coach. Luke Gotmer is a good quarterback.
That weakness is sure. I think Indiana wins this game.
I think I think this goes over. I think this
goes for. I think the score goes over. So so
(48:35):
I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go thirty twenty seven. I like,
I like where both offenses are. I do wonder how
Indiana's going to handle the kicking punting game here. Quinn
Warren Nico Radiciic. We'll see does Signetti go Ford on
fourth down a little bit more just to lean into
(48:57):
his offense. Hey, this is our crux, this is our foundation.
We'll see what happens there. But if Nico Radicch just
has to kick a thirty something yarder to win the game,
I feel more confident in him doing it than Tennessee's
kicker last week, who I think had to do a yeah,
forty two or forty five or something after the penalties.
So you know, if it's in the thirties, I feel
(49:18):
good about Nico Raticch. It's making that kick to take
Indiana across the finish line. So we'll see what happens there.
It should be fun, it should be a big time
matchup here. It's gonna be It's gonna be absolutely awesome
to see Indiana host a top ten matchup and potentially
(49:39):
beat a top ten team in front of fans at
home for the first time since nineteen sixty seven. That's
kind of crazy to think about, but that is crazy.
That is that is where it's at. Indiana Illinois matt
is one of eight games this weekend involving Big ten teams.
(50:06):
Conference play gets into fuller force. This weekend. There are
a couple of non conference rivalries with Oregon State Oregon,
Washington at Washington State. Mm hmm, Perdue Notre Dame. Matt
(50:29):
and I like to look at the different point spreads,
the over unders. Like to give an upset pick or
two here on the Big ten slate this weekend. Matt,
what are your one or two Big ten picks of
the week for this weekend in the league.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
That is a great question. So I have Oregon covering
against Oregon steak.
Speaker 1 (50:55):
Yeah, me too. I have that one too.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
They're fair at thirty five. They will waiting by forty.
Speaker 1 (51:02):
Try to find a try to find a thirty four
and a half if you can.
Speaker 2 (51:07):
But yeah, yeah, yeah, they're gonna go. They're gonna come.
I have Iowa over under under yeah, forty five and
a half against Rutgers.
Speaker 1 (51:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
And last one, yeah, Washington covers against Washington States nineteen
and a half.
Speaker 1 (51:35):
You know, it's funny like the PAC twelve Twitter account
was dancing on it was sort of victory lapping UCLA
losing to New Mexico Friday night, and I'm like, hold on,
(51:56):
first of all, what.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
Are you doing here?
Speaker 1 (51:59):
Like, who are now just two teams, and your two
teams are not good. Like you man, talk about you
know stone, you know what is it? Stone? Glasshouse whatever?
Speaker 2 (52:13):
Throwing stone in a glasshouse.
Speaker 1 (52:15):
Yeah, man, not a good look.
Speaker 2 (52:20):
To be fair. We could ship UCLA back to the
back twelve. They want them, they could take them.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
Well, well no, I don't. I don't want to do that.
Speaker 2 (52:30):
We need their basketball. Basketball is great. Yeah, the rest
of their athletic everything.
Speaker 1 (52:35):
Football will be fine. You know, Indiana is going through
this patch a couple of years ago. Like their football
team will figure it out. They just have to course
correct significantly.
Speaker 2 (52:50):
I Sean Foster was always a stupid higher Yeah it
was had no head coaching. Yeah, experience you're getting giving
a power five job, four job.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Yeah. And if money is a problem, like, don't go
that route, right, like, you know, hire an assistant that
you're excited about at a group of five levels so
you know whatever, right, Like, yeah, exactly, Yeah, don't go
that route. There's so many quality high school and college
programs in California. You don't have to go to de
Shaun Foster out. You could.
Speaker 2 (53:18):
Yeah, you could have gone to high school in California
and got somebody yeah, and again it would have been
outside the box.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
It would have been cheap. But if that's how you're
gonna go, it's fine. Like cool, I have Oregon covering
it's Oregon State. I have Maryland covering ten at Wisconsin.
The line is pushed out. I think it opened at
six and a half or seven or seven and a half.
I think ten. I think ten is a lot and
(53:46):
it's it's not super confident, but I do think Maryland
covers ten.
Speaker 2 (53:52):
I mean I think they could upset them.
Speaker 1 (53:55):
Yeah, I think they could too. I don't know if
there's something going on as to why this line is
swinging significantly towards Wisconsin more and more. Maybe there's an
injury there that I'm not aware of, but I do
think ten is still enough as far as to cover there.
I'm going to take Purdue to cover twenty four and
a half at Notre Dame. I think Notre Dame will
(54:15):
be much better, like in a month. I think this
is a really good spot for Purdue with no pressure
to go into South Bend playing better football and covering
twenty four and a half, and then.
Speaker 2 (54:31):
Florida State will win the Most Improved Team this Year award.
For college football. But Purdue is going to be second.
I think Purdue is not going to be that bad.
I think Purdue, yeah, might actually be somewhat yeah, half decent.
Speaker 1 (54:46):
I agree. I agree, which Hey that helps Indiana's you know,
strength of schedule metrics, and also hey, I'll take that
every day of the week. And then my opposite Nebraska,
Like this is pretty tell to me that Michigan's a
two and a half point favorite in this game, Like
the books are very clearly sitting here saying we don't
(55:06):
want to make Nebraska one or two point favorite at
home toss up. We are making Michigan a team that
went to Oklahoma and struggled. We are making Michigan a favorite.
Like they're telling you Michigan deserves to be favored, And
I feel like that should you know, steer me in
(55:27):
the opposite direction. But I just don't take the two
and a half. If you're a Nebraska backer, just take
just take Nebraska to win. I don't care, I don't
I don't care for the one or two points. Just
take Nebraska to win. And if nothing else, you know,
Nebraska should start hot similar to what Oklahoma did. And
(55:49):
if that happens, you know, you can maybe take a
life cover on Michigan and try to try to hedge
that as that game goes. And then there was one
other thing it took me with. I took Wisconsin, took Purdue,
took Nebraska to win. Uh No, I think that's it.
Other stuff top twenty five, nothing really. I like Oklahoma
(56:13):
to cover six and a half against Auburn, but I
think that's kind of where I am as far as
this week's slate is concerned. Feel free to throw on
any other games you're interested in met Otherwise, it's time
for final thoughts. Anything on your mind before you wrap
up here on this Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (56:33):
Uh No, I got nothing left on the betting front.
Speaker 1 (56:38):
Florida Miami. Miami is seven and a half.
Speaker 2 (56:42):
Miami's only feared by seven and a half in that game. Yeah,
Quadrup like whatever, That Florida team is awful.
Speaker 1 (56:52):
I figured you have to home state.
Speaker 2 (56:57):
Homes I have, but I haven't seen him Miami team.
That's good. Since I was a team like no, I'm
even a teener since I was like ten, It's been
a long time since I've seen in Miami team less
than I probably like five or six. It's good.
Speaker 1 (57:11):
Good for the ACC Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech. Get
this old Clemson stuff out of here.
Speaker 2 (57:18):
Yeah yeah, I like it. Well for State's fores. State's
always good, Yeah they are.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
But I guess just from the last couple of years,
of course Florist to go undefeated.
Speaker 2 (57:30):
But like you know, anyway, anyways, iin thoughts. Uh, hopefully
it's a good game on Saturday. I'll be watching it
Sunday morning, yeah, because it'll be Sunday morning my time. Yeah,
when it happens, yeah, correct, yeah, yeah, And then I
(57:51):
will have to go to work and teach kids while
this game is happening. So pray. I hope you all
have me in your thoughts and prayers as I will
be working and checking my phone at the same time
and praying to God that my boss is not watching
the camera. Well, I'm teaching a kid how to say
the word yellow and looking at for minim when those
(58:11):
will throw pass because it's going to happen. They can't
they can't stop me. And I know there's one or
two of my coworkers that listen to this podcast, and
I'm telling you, guys, if you snitch on me, you're
sitting on me. I will pour ice cream into your
desk chair. Thank you, man.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
This is uh, this is it. I mean, you have
your home game against the top ten team. I mean,
let's go. Let's put it your chance, Let's put it
on the show. You've done all the hard work to
this point. This is the easiest.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
All the cameras are on you. It's the game of
the weekend in college football. It's the best ranked on
ranked matchup by far. That's out there again.
Speaker 1 (58:54):
College game.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
I mean, like the Utah game is pretty good, but
but pretty good. Now this is this is prime this
is the prime time game. Well it's for the week.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
Texas Tech you toss pretty good, for sure, I'll be watching. Yeah,
but it's not as good Michigan Nebraska's not as good.
Florida Miami's not as good. No matter how much you
want to get gas lit. This is the best one.
Is the best one. It's the best matchup of the week,
and it's in Bloomington, Indiana at the Rock. Like Sig,
you've done the hard work, man, Shanahan Haynes, You've done
(59:24):
the hard work, you know. Think about right, all the
frost is in my find like, think about all the
frustration and hostility that you dealt with going into Ohio
State and going into Notre Dame and how difficult it
was to play on the road in those venues. And
(59:46):
I know Indiana doesn't have as many seats as the
Shoe or or or South Bend, but like the environment,
the hostility. Right when Jeremiah Love breaks off that big run,
the camera is shaking. When Ohio State gets that block punt,
the camera is shaking. Like, take all of that frustration
(01:00:08):
and hostility that you dealt with in those two road
games and turn it around. Yep, you now impose that
on your opponent. Come out hot, force Illinois on the
back foot, make them one dimensional, make correct adjustments at halftime,
(01:00:29):
keep Illinois at arms reach. I think it'll be a
close game, but I can see an outcome that Matt
talked about where Indiana gets out to a lead two scores,
three scores, keeps in Illinois at arms reach, Indiana cross
the finish line, and then you use that as the wind,
as a vibe, as a momentum into your Iowa road game,
your Penn State, your Oregon road game. Those two are
(01:00:51):
coming up, and you're gonna feel the ground shaking because
Kinnick is gonna be rocking, especially if they beat Rutgers
on Friday night, and Eugene for sure is going to
be and considering how well they've played over the course
of twenty four and twenty five seasons. So turn it
around here, impose that home field advantage on your opponent
because Illinois is damn good and if you give them,
(01:01:12):
