Speaker 1 (00:06):
What's up val you fans. You made it to the
weekend and you're Indiana Hoosiers, to the surprise of nobody
listening to us unless you're an outsider. Is in the
top twelve in college football. And I had said this
team was good enough to win double digit games this year.
(00:28):
The games you were concerned about were Oregon and Penn
State on the road. We had a bit of a
discussion about the Siowa game coming up, but neither of
us were all too nervous about facing Illinois at home.
As good as Illinois is, it was just one of
those situations where Memorial Stadium a game where Kurt Signetti
needed a home game against a good team to make
(00:52):
a stand, to make to send a message. He certainly
did that. He certainly did that. And one by fifty
three and it's onto Iowa. We said it was put
up for shut up time, and Kurt Signetti and Indianna
definitely put up on on Saturday nights. So Matt and
(01:14):
I are gonna complete our recap of the Illinois win,
dig into all the different aspects of this Iowa matchup,
which to me, just as Kurt Signetti said, is going
to be a much more difficult challenge than the last one.
We're gonna do all this and more here on episode
three fifty two of The Hoosier Sound or the Official
podcast of Indiana HQ. Recording this edition of The Hoosier
Sound on Friday, September twenty six, twenty twenty five. I'm
(01:37):
your host Nathan Christian. Here with me is my normal
co host, Matt Luken's Matt sixty three to ten? You
were watching this at what seven thirty eight thirty nine
thirty in the morning over in China? What is your
final recap of this sixty three to ten message? Sending
(02:03):
win over the Illinois fighting Alni.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, I was watching the game. Start off watching the game.
I woke up to a shower, got a coffee, Sure,
started watching the game. Then I had to go to work. Sure,
I had to teach them kids. So I gave my
worst lesson of all time because I spent all lesson
(02:30):
sitting at my desk instead of up teaching of the
class with my phone in the corner on the whole time,
muted but right underneath the computer screen, so no one
can tell what the heck I'm doing. But so I
watched the whole game. I would say that win against
(02:54):
Illinois last Saturday was among the most euphoric, Yeah, feelings
I have felt as a sports fan, like and I
have seen my NFL team not one, but two Super
Bowl lifetime. I watched the win three NBA Championship, isn't it.
(03:15):
I've watched the Cubs win a World Series.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
We share that.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
I like that, And I haven't watched the Flyers do
anything but and Arsenal breaks my heart and.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I Flys were in the Stanley Cup Final in twenty ten.
I remember that.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I will say as an i U sports fan, it's
up there with the watch shot, the feeling, the feeling
of the watch shot. I don't think nothing can surpass
that until we win a national championship. That is sure
the pinnacle of i U sports fans.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Even that would be like a different feeling, right, Like
that's like a different thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
The complete and other euphoria of watching this team walk
up and down and back up and down the field
on Illinois on a team in a fan base, by
the way, that has chirped us online in incessantly incessantly
(04:14):
since the schedule has announced and since they beat South
Carolina basically going, I can't wait to be this year's Indiana.
I can't wait to go into Indiana and beat them.
I can't wait to show how much of a fraud
Signetty is. The list goes on on the things that
they said to us, and we made them look so
freaking stupid that it was again among one of my
(04:38):
most fulfilling nights, or I guess mornings for me of
being an IU fan, and it's a sports fan in general,
and I'm sure a lot of you share the same
perspective as me. Like you know, I on this very
podcast last week, sat here and told you that we
(04:59):
were going to blow them out.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Yeah you did. I didn't see it.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
I didn't see it, and I only said that out
of pure confidence in coach Sig. That's that's the only
because we only win games if we blow people up, Like,
let's be honest, like this is that that is what happens.
I guess the majority of the time, the exception Michigan
that Washington and I sort of remember that Washington was
(05:26):
close for a bit, but then we kind of pulled
away at the end. Yeah, I guess Michigan would be
the kind of the exception to that, but still the
majority of the games that we have won have been blowouts,
and and so for you'd go out there and execute
in the way in which they did, highly highly impressive.
I mean, coach sig is one of, if not the
best hires I have seen in any sport in a
(05:48):
very very very very long time, very long time. Again
because he was a guy that well was gaining a
lot of national praise at JMU, still was not targeted
by high level jobs and goes to an Indiana job
that was in the dumps from where Tom Allen took
(06:09):
it and where he left it right, there was some
highs in there. Let's not get it wrong. I love
I still love Tom Allen to death.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
But he wrote that situation, He.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Wrote that thing. He wrote that thing until it bottomed
out and to come in and immediately turn around in
a year now basically a year and a half where
I use beating top ten teams at home, selling out
Memorial Stadium, becoming national talk like a national talking point,
Like who would have thought that Indiana football would ever
be a national talking point other than when we get
(06:40):
destroyed by Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State or media.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Right like our media days, yeah, or or a Big
Ten commissioner kicking us out of the Big Ten title
game in twenty twenty. It's not for you, that's this
is the This is a big picture. This is a
big picture win, not a little picture win. Right, Like
like beating Illinois, Like that was a big picture thing
(07:05):
because you get you get the crowd shots that will
be on all the on all the you know, recruiting
postcards and everything forever, or even for non football players,
for like future classes of Indiana students. You get the
you get the punt block moment that'll be you know,
(07:27):
searched on YouTube and TikTok forever. You get the the
The point that you made about how Indiana's gonna for
a full week is the subject of This is the
team of the week. This is watchhout. Fernando Mendez a
first overall pick Heisman Trophy favorites.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
He's a favorite for the highest.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Favorite and look, Kinnick might jolt that a little bit,
but he's the favorite for a full week. And that
was even before John Matier got hurt, and it's definitely
after John Matier got hurt. It's a big picture win, right,
Indiana's gonna recruit against Illinois for portal guys, for high
schoolers now and forever. Yeah, just because of the location.
(08:12):
As long as it's Sinneti versus Bilama, Indiana's gonna get
their pick.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, at least relative to.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Illinois and Purdue. I mean, you know, there's just that's
just the way it is. When Indiana's outscored illinoisan one
hundred and thirty to seventeen or whatever over the last
two games, and so look, it's a big picture win.
(08:40):
And that's my main takeaway, right Elijaester at Omark Cooper
NFL Draft wide receivers, no question about it. Oh wow,
do you watch d'An angelo Ponds. Well, he's got to
be on your radar. This is what the great Big
Ten teams and SEC teams get every season. Right, there's
a week where we talk about Ohio status a national
talking point and just complimenting their players, complementing their team,
(09:00):
complementing their coach. We did that to a degree after
they went over Texas to start the season. All right.
They do with Michigan, We do it with the Alabama,
we do with Georgia, we do with LSU. When they
when they are at their best. We just never had
done that with Indiana before. And beating Illinois sixty three
(09:22):
to ten is is is what is what well you
know created that is what created that end product. And
again it was absolutely beautiful to watch on TV. The scenery,
the visuals were amazing.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
I can't imagine being there in person, though, I like
I talked about it being a euphoric moment for me
watching it on TV fifteen bazillion miles away. Literally you
could have dug a hole from Memorial Stadium ended up
where I was, you know, on the other side of
the earth, and probably to be there in person, you know,
(10:01):
I'm sure was a moment that no know who's your fan,
will ever forget, and I hope they don't for a
long time.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
No, I hope they don't either. I definitely won't. I mean,
you and I have both been to home games where
it's been pin drop stuff. I mean you could literally
not hear anyone else say anything.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
I mean, I've been there for when I you blew
a thirty damn your thirty point lead at home to Rutgers. Yeah,
been there, okay, but all of us, by the way,
all of us Indiana fans. Now, I think that's what
we've been. That's what That's what I was about to say.
The story, the big story to me about this IU
(10:42):
win wasn't the fact that I you won in the
fashion that they did. It was more about the national
narrative of of is I you like a real deal?
Like are they really here? And and all IU fans
going we don't care, like we don't care if we're
(11:07):
here or not, and it's it's actually a bit insulting
for for for us because we've been through hell and
back again, right, and not even just back again. We've
been through hell for nothing. Really historically, if you go
back and you look at you know, the history. I
(11:27):
don't mean I don't know to give you guys a history.
You're watching this, it's an IU podcast. You understand this.
So what are we doing here? Like, what what is
the national what does national media's point of view? That's
always been, you know, our outlook on it, Man Maya
looks certainly, which is it's like are you here? Are
they a real thing?
Speaker 1 (11:47):
We don't care?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
But it was it was so again go back to
the word for it, Yeah, it was. It was so
it was really like like the story coming full circle
right on on Saturday, where finally not only do we
get this, you know, we beat a ranked team under
signetti whatever, camel, hippo whatever, you know whatever it is
(12:14):
off our back right, but then also like we prove
to people that were like really a thing even though
we said we didn't care.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Well, look, yeah, I don't like you don't need your approval.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Now we don't care about your approval anyways, but it's
nice to have it, but nice to be here.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
I think IU fans are like, Indiana football is already
a thing. You're already a thing when you go eleven
and one and you make the college football Playoff.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Exactly, but nobody wanted to hear that. Now we go
and beat an overrated top ten Illinois team at home
by a bazilion. Now people want to be like, well,
this team might be better than last people. We told
you this all summer. You guys are like that team
wasn't that good? Like so these people they talk themselves
in circles.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
It's insanity. Goal posts as I talked in circles goal
post movie. You know a lot of moving goalposts. This
that whatever you say, overrated Illinois, I think they were
an injured Illinois team, no question about it. And I
think if they do get a few defensive backs into
the lineup once again, I think I think they make
this one against the USC pretty close.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
I I I hope they do that.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Well.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
I'm trying to say here as I think they were
overrated for the jump, even if they're healthy, Like they
beat a South Carolina team that people thought were gonna
be world beaters. I'm looking at them now. They got
two losses.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
A lot of the lot of the metrics say Old
Dominions better than Duke. Duke. Duke is Old Dominion in
a power five uniform, powerful uniform Old Dominion.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Did they have a second loss yet, No, they very
much don't, and they could be very alive for that
G five spot.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
I'm gonna mention something else about Old Dominion coming up up.
But look, man, I think it's high time we fast forwarded.
Signetti was ready to rock and roll, uh to talk
about Iowa's early a Saturday post game, because we all
know this game is going to be in a major test.
This is this is the biggest between the ears test
(14:22):
I think i U has had to face, you know,
outside of the CFP game. It's just when you when
you play a team like Ohio State on the road,
you you sort of you know, built up to that.
You you were you you saw it on the schedule
ahead of time, you were ramping up the entire season
(14:43):
for that moment. Now I feel like you come off
of this you know, intoxicating victory over Illinois where you're
just like, Wow, everything went well, Sir rat was awesome,
Cooper was awesome. Kobe Martin is going to win the
Heisman in twenty twenty seven. Mendoza is the first, you know.
(15:07):
And now it's road trip to Kinnick, capacity crowd, and
they want to do to Indiana what Indiana did to Illinois.
So yes, let's talk about how realistic all this is.
Iowa unranked goes to Bloomington, just kidding, hosts Indiana. Yes,
(15:34):
hosts Indiana at Kinnick Saturday afternoon, three thirty eastern on Peacock.
It is a spread that is fluctuating between seven and
a half eight and a half points. I think this
will probably close at eight eight and a half something
of that sort. The over under is at forty eight
(15:57):
and a half. So the books are saying this should
be a final score or something like twenty eight to
twenty in favor of Indiana. Of course, I use four
and oh Iowa is three and one. Their loss was
on the road to Iowa State in a disgusting game
to watch. But outside of that Iowa State game, and
(16:22):
you can wait that game how much you want. But
since that Iowa State game, let's put it that way,
this Iowa offense has kind of figured some things out.
They seem to have turned a corner forty two against
U mass more impressively thirty eight on the road against Rutgers.
To be fair, seven of those points where a kick
(16:44):
return touchdown, a kicker turn touchdown. There was a short
field at the end of the game that helped them
score seven offensive points. There was a punt return that
I believe led to three or seven in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
By Iowa football.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
It's all pout game. That's all part of the game. Yeah.
And so with that said, Mark Gronowski had his best
game of the season. Iowas quarterback had his best game
of the season in their ten point win at Rutgers.
There is a banged up backfield there. Iowa does like
to run the ball, but jazzy and Patterson is injured,
(17:23):
so you know Kamari Molton is going to be their
starting running back. Matt and I are talking about how
the receivers are shaky, but their offensive line and their
defensive line are excellent. Their back end on defense definitely
asks a lot of questions more than answers them. I
don't know if they have an NFL player in their
linebacker or in their secondary. Their linebacker corps their secondary.
(17:46):
It's Iowa team's a little bit different, Matt. It's a
little bit different than the one we've were accustomed to seeing.
The last time we played that was in twenty twenty one,
a game that we won't mention too much here for
obvious reasons. But this Iowa team is a little different.
They look comfortable throwing the ball. They're a little bit
shaky on defense. Rutgers put up four hundred total yards
(18:06):
on them, and you know, eighthan calliac Manus looked very
good throwing it. Three hundred and thirty passing yards on
forty attempts. You know, seven seven and a half yards
in attempt there. What is your headline as far as
Iowa is concerned, Is this just about the environment and
the atmosphere causing Indiana problems or are there specific parts
(18:31):
of this Iowa team that iu fens should really pay
attention to going into Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
This is a This is a hard question for me
because you always want it because with i we always
want to be like, let's focus on the defense. Let's
focus on the defense, right, But with this Iowa defense,
people have been able to move the ball a little
bit on them. They don't look the same as they
have been and they I think they played pretty okay
(19:03):
against Iowa State. But there's nothing really to write all about.
They don't have this ballhawking secondary that they always have.
They always have some monster on the defensive line or
somebody in the linebacker corps that's, you know, a potential
All American. I don't see that either. I would say
the strength of this Iowa team is their offensive line.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
They They might have the best offensive line in the
history of college football.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Yes, yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Like, if if you are a person that believes in
PFF rankings, which I think a lot of people are,
I think I think their analytics are good for the
most part. Some people throw you out the minute you
bring up PFF, which I think is ridiculous Aunt being
one of them. The minute you bring up PFF with Ant,
he's like, but anyways, it's like I was like bringing
(19:57):
up ken palm around him as a impression, But no,
I I I genuinely like for their stuff. So I
mean I was left tackle, left guard, center, and right
guard are all number one PFF graded for their position.
(20:19):
Their right tackle is number two.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Yeah, and each I dug into it more. They're pretty
good run blocking, and they're pretty good pass blocking. They're
pretty good, you know, against bad teams. They're pretty good
against against stay at Rutgers like and and they're left
tackles of sophomore. I mean, he's only going to get better.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Yeah, so they're they have monsters up front. Now. With
all of that being said, Indiana got a good defensive line,
by the way, like unbelievable. I was looking at some
stats this morning on the Indiana defense, and I think
there was a there was a fascinating stat for me
(21:06):
that I saw was that I you has like I
think it's like most disruptive plays, And there was like
a like a like a like a bar graph, right,
not a bar graph, but like a like a scaapist graph, scatterplute,
and i U was significantly skewed towards defensive line, causing havoc,
(21:27):
creating disruption and creating disruptions. Yes, and they were by
far and away the outlier for defensive line. They were like, yes,
the bar graph is here right, you all can see me.
I you you know, like the best of the normal
people that are usually good as like Ohio States. Here,
I use over here, like down over the bottom part
(21:49):
here is defensive line and the top this part, the
vertical part is is secondary. Yes, like I use like
down down here right on the scatter.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
And the funny thing is, of course, like I don't
know how they grade di'angelo Pond's blocking a punt for
the biggest touchdown of the Illinois game. You know it's secondary.
But that goes extra extra extra credit, bonus bonus for
the defensive backs.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Which by which, by the way, special teams shout out
special teams. They they don't get any love because they're
the third phase of of the football team and they
played the least amount of snaps. And under Kurt Signetti
have we had one one major special teams.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
The Ohio State game. It was bad the James Evans
blocked punk But to.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Be fair, to be fair, a lot of things went
bad in the Ohio State game, not just not that
was not on special teams when we're winning games or
even in they weren't bad against their name, I don't
think like I think they played very consistent outside of
that Ohio State game last year. But again, nobody played
well in that Ohio State game last year, so that
(23:05):
doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Yeah, and it's an important phase in this game because
I Iowa was going to be very very effective in
that in that aspect of the game. But no, I
mean one hundred percent, this special teams group deserves credit
Grant Kane, the coordinator. There an under discussed person on
(23:29):
this Indiana coaching staff that is so incredibly, so incredibly elite.
But yeah, like it's it's going to be an important
aspect of the game. But creating havoc, causing disruptions having
a big part of this game huge, That's what I was.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
I was to finish my point, I got on a
side tangent. I was talking about defensive line. Then I
got to explaining scatter plots to you. To finish my point.
The defensive line has been creating a majority of the
havoc for this team. I think, given the fact that
oh iowas Jesus West Ohioa's, Iowa's strength lies in their
(24:03):
offensive line. Defensive line going to have their hardest game
of the season probably against Iowa. Yeah right, They're not
going to see another defensive line. This is a big matchup.
We need the secondary and a newly minted scholarship player
in Lewis Moore and the rest.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
Of his buddies.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
That's right, that's right to create someboe that havoc. Pick
up some of that slack. The defensive line is going
to be given up because again it's just a This
is a hard ask for any defensive line in the
country to go out against Iowa and produce at the
level that they've been producing previously given them how good
(24:44):
this Iowa offensive line really is.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Absolutely On that note, I have a stat or two
that I think will blow everyone's mind. And I haven't
heard this in a minute listening to other podcasts. I
might I might have missed it. If it's been talked
about before, then so be it. I will drop one
or two of those stats on the topic you just discussed.
(25:08):
After We talked about who won the week this past
week in IU sports, and there's a lot to pick from.
How about Palmer Alt, the Indiana soccer striker, getting a
hat trick at Penn State. Of course, did lose at
Michigan State, which is a little bit of a disappointment,
but even after that result, you know, all of IU
men's soccer goals are still in front of them, as
(25:30):
far as making the College Cup and winning the Big.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Ten, hopefully winning national championship number eight.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Day Q four eight. How about the volleyball team. They
had a tricky loss at Western Kentucky, a Western Kentucky
team that is either in the top twenty five or
close to it. But then I you bounced back, went
to Northwestern, won a Big Ten opener. That game was
on Big Ten Network. By the way, saw a good
(25:57):
chunk of that. Good job by Steve Aird getting this
thing up and running. And I think tomorrow they host
Washington should be a redout after Yeah, I believe it's
a Saturday night home game, So you watch Indiana beat
Iowa in the afternoon and then head over to Wilkinson
for the volleyball game. Kyle Schwarber doing huge things with
(26:19):
the Phillies. Yeah, fifty six home runs.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
I think insanity.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
Bro hitting e could hit sixty and no cheap ones,
you know, like like their moonshots, you know, is good
for the camera and hey base another baseball shot out
to mckaid brown a picture they used to play it.
Indiana starting for the Colorado Rockies now and Tanner Gordon
as well as mckaid brown might win you know, Rockies
(26:48):
MVPs for the twenty twenty five season because they've been
they've both been pretty impressed, especially Tanner gordons eating a
lot of innings for Colorado. But mckaid brown strick out
ten in the start recently and that's it's an Indiana
record for most strikeouts.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
My reaction to that, By the way, I would like
to clarify, I'm not I think these guys are awesome
and I'm glad they're having great I'm more like anything
that's good happening to the Rockies needs to be taken
with a grain of salt because it is the Rockies, or.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Or it needs to be celebrated because not much good
is happening to the Rockies. And look, you go out
there and you do what you do like mccaid brown
going out and striking out ten against a I believe
it was against Seattle, and the Mariners are going to
(27:42):
be in the playoffs, so you know, mccaid brown going
out there doing his thing. All these players that we've
mentioned unquestionably one the week this past week and I
U sports and mcaid brown did it in five innings.
But yeah, you said, an Indiana record for most strikeouts
in a major league of peer. It's by a former Hoosiers,
so pretty awesome to see that take place. Plenty of
(28:04):
other stuff exciting. Of course, Indiana football won the week
as well, so I just wanted to touch on all
of those. But folks, if you enjoy our show, important
reminder leave us the review, tell a friend, share our links.
Your support really helps us grow this podcast and reas
more passionate. I you fans such as yourself, and you
can find us on social media at Indiana HQ as
(28:27):
well as at the Hoosier Sound So, Matt, you were
talking about how Indiana so far through four weeks has
been excellent at creating disruption and.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Causing having at everything, but yes, at everything.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
But yeah, the the eliteness of the group up front
the Michael Kamara, Tyreek, Tucker, Jose Wheeler, Kellen Y, Isaiah Jones,
Marios and Deino. So Elijah Hardy off the Blitz. Yeah,
I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple guys, but they know
(29:06):
who they are. But you all know who you are.
Steven Daily going back to the Indiana stake, So Mark Gronowski,
he is third worst in the country and holding onto
the football. His time to throw is something upwards of
(29:29):
three point three seconds through four games this season. He
holds on to the ball. He invites a lot of
pressure by holding onto the ball. Makes sense, right? You
know what the number thirty seven represents? Man? Number thirty seven.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Prime? Would that be the number of flavors at best Robins?
Speaker 1 (29:57):
It's not. That's a thirty one, isn't I think thirty one?
Speaker 2 (30:02):
I think it's thirty one.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Yeah, thirty seven is Mark Gronowski's PFF grade when he's
under pressure.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
That's not good, by the way, So you know that's
not thirty seventh in the country. That's thirty seven out
of like one hundred one hundred. Yeah, that's failing, but
significantly failing.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
You know what the number? What is it? You're ninety
one represents Matt.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Would that be a Frandoventos is great for being under pressure?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
It's Mark Gronowski's grade when he's clean. When he's not pressured, Oh,
so he's he's an A plus.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
He's an A minus.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
He's a Heisman Heisman contender. When he's clean, he is
Gunner Keel Dusty Keel. When he's under pressure.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
Dusty Keel is rude. That's rude. But yeah, you're right,
he's not performing very well when he's under pressure, though.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Why why are we? Why are we? Dusty Keel was
with us when we're not good. Dusty Keel fought through
some things. He is.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Dusty bad?
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Hey, hey, hey, why this is unnecessary? This is totally
he is uh he is Danny O'Neill.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Is that where are you pulling these names from?
Speaker 1 (31:20):
So Danie O'Neill is the current Wisconsin quarterback.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Okay, yeah, which is by Wisconsin's So how does how
is Wisconsin?
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Johnny Langon? Mark is Johnny Langon, Rutgers leg Johnny leg
was so bad Rutgers legend Johnny Langon when when he's
under pressed when so so so getting Granowski's face And
by the way, you asked about Fernanda Mendoza sixty three
grade under pressure. Ninety two grade went clean, So it's
(31:55):
not as bad. And it's natural to see a big
drop off when you're under pressure, which is why people
like to create pressure. But Granowski, so was I saying
thirty seven? Yeah? Like yikes? Interesting? Interestingly, Mendoza against the
Blitz seventy seven, Gronowski against the against the Blitz forty five.
(32:16):
That's to Blitzer pressure him. I don't care if you
do with four. I don't care if you do with seven.
I don't care if you do with nine. The thing
is one of the things we were going to cross
here coming up these This Iowa receiver group is terrible.
The matchup I am most confident with in this game
as it relates to an edge for Indiana, is I
(32:37):
use defensive backs against Iowa's wide receivers.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
One guy, D'Angelo Pons might be able to cover all
three Iowa receivers on the same play. I want to
see him try at least once.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
I don't. I don't think I want to see him
try cover.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
I'm good fine Ponds.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
And to make it's gonna make fun of Dangelo to
make D'Angelo pond fun of Dangelo Pond's for last week,
because let's make some comedy. After the one mistake he
had all.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Game, Signetti sent us on the safety.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
That's no, that's actually certainly true because the safety lets
the wide receiver go over him, which the safety is.
The whole job of a safety is to let the
keep the guy in front of you.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
I mean, Signetty took a couple of shots at Indiana's
safeties since leading Illinois sixty three to ten, and he
talked about it Saturday postgame, and he talked about it
Monday during the press conference, and I'm like, damn, bro
Like Lewis Moore is gonna be okay, hey, man is
BELICHICKI and stuff right there?
Speaker 2 (33:47):
From I mean, we do we do have college Bill Belichick.
Not sorry, I have to preface it because there's actually
really college Bill Belichick. We have the college version of
NFL Bill Belichick.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Man oh man. But about the cheating is, Look, Brian
Hayes does have a pension for blitzing. You know, He's
shown it through four weeks this season, and I want
to see more of it. It's the bottom line. I
want to see more of it. I want to see
us throwing the kitchen sink at Mark Gronowski. If that
means Iowa spins the tables on us and throws an
eighty yard touchdown, I'm okay giving up two of those
(34:22):
or three of those before changing our defensive game plan.
I'm not kidding that I was hitting about DeAngelo Ponds
covering three receivers with one guy. I was not joking
about us putting numbers in Mark Gronowski's face. He takes
forever to get rid of the ball. And of course,
in a year where Aiden Fisher has yet to make
(34:43):
his big, noticeable standout play. To this point, he's done
a lot of the captaincy leadership stuff. You know him
as a spy on Gronowski who can run the ball.
I'm curious. I'm curious to see Brian Haynes use that
the weapon as well.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
For all the people that point out that that Fisher's
not doing anything, I would like you to go watch
the game.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Yeah, he's doing so many intangible things.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Now most of the time the defense runs in the
opposite direction of wherever he's lined up on the field.
That diet is like.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
A shutdown linebacker.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
It's like the same thing where like D'Angelo Ponce hasn't
had an interception this season yet, and like, you know,
he hasn't been targeted, Like the teams are actively avoiding
going after our best players because they know how good
they are. Now, Mikhail Kamara could could use to step
up a little bit or more, but we saw a
little bit of that on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
He did.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
He didn't have a bad game, but we're just still
waiting for him to have that come out, coming out
party that we're you know, we've been expecting and to
have this season being one of the best, you know,
defensive linemen in the entire country. I haven't seen that, Yett.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Yeah, no, exactly and like and like and and that's
the same kind of commentary there with with with Fisher.
It's like the seasons long for Indiana. We're thinking, what
sixteen games? Is that the number? Now?
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Uh yeah, I think it's team you gotta think big
ten championship, right since thirteen you get to buy it's
thirteen get the buy in three games for a national championship. Yeah,
sixteen yeah, yeah, super yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
It runs hit Fisher or Elijah Hardy playing that spiral
on Gronowski is something I'm looking forward to as well.
I said earlier I would talk about Old Dominion later
in this podcast. I think Iowa's offense is kind of
Old Dominion times three, just as far as you have
(36:39):
a scrambling quarterback, yeah, a dual threat, Yeah, you could
see designed runs. The passing game leaves a lot to
be desired. They take a lot of pride in their blocking,
a lot of pride in offensive line play. I'm not
saying they're the same as Old Dominion. I'm saying you
take the Monarchs, you square it, or you put it
(37:00):
in a classic Big ten, you know program. And Colton Joe.
The stuff you learned about Colton Joseph in week one
against Old Dominion is going to be much more useful
than anything you did preparing for Illinois. Yeah, especially their offense.
And one of the things Matt and I talked about
(37:21):
in the build up to the season was like, of
the the four key games on Indiana schedule, which we're
talking about home Illinois and the three big road games
including at Iowa, at Iowa, at Oregon at Penn State.
We said, obviously, you know, Indiana going two and two
in these games will go a long way and helping
make the playoffs three and one would be awesome. I
(37:42):
obviously already have one win on the board. But Matt
and I were saying, how these four games will not
all be won the same way. Your preparation, your adjustments
for each of these four games will be so different,
and Matt like the blueprint, the game plan for Iowa
is going to be so so different than the one
(38:03):
against Illinois. I mean, what unique things do you think Signetti, Shanahan,
and Haynes pull out out of their playbook for this
Iowa game that you didn't see for Illinois. Do you
think it's going to be a challenge for this Signetti
coaching staff too? This is not something you get in
(38:25):
the group of five back to back quality opponents just
like this where you have big crowds, big environments. What
sort of unique stuff do you think Signetti, Shanahan, Haynes
pull out of the playbook for this Iowa game.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Actually, I'm going to counter your question and say I
don't think they pull anything out. I think I think
they just do exactly what they did.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
Against old dominion.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
See it that way, I think they do exactly what
they did against old dominion, except with a little bit
of more, just a little bit more spice, just like
we saw in the Illinois game, right, especially on offense. Sure,
I don't think they they don't hold him back. I am,
I'm serious. I think they're holding some back, some stuff back. Still,
(39:15):
I really think, I really think I think there is
I know, we just beat a team, top ten team
fifty six to tens or sixty three to ten. Sorry,
it just beat a top ten team sixt three or ten. However,
that being said, I still think there's another gear this
team can go go at. I know, I think Sarat
can be used more. I think Omar Cooper doesn't get
(39:37):
nearly as much touches. I think we haven't seen him
by break break one yet. I think I think there's
some explosiveness there in the run game we haven't seen.
Mendoza really hasn't, you know, handled the ball too much.
He's made some big plays with his legs, but not
nearly as much as he can. And then you you
(40:00):
add on that the defense really hasn't forced a ton
of turnovers outside of of the Illinois game, and and
and I'm you know, we expect them to to win
the turnover battle every single game that they play and
occurt to any team because they we just don't turn
the ball over and the defense is always ball hawking.
So I think there's a whole other level this team
(40:22):
can go to. And I think they're saving some stuff
for that Oregon game because they know they got to
win one of these two road games if they're going
to make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
They have to.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
They absolutely have to. So I still think there's some
stuff left in the the back rooms in Memorial Stadium,
and I don't think they're gonna be used against the
Iowa teamcause I I I don't like this Iowa team.
I know some of the statistics are like that. I like, yeah,
(40:52):
they're better, but I don't really I don't see it.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Let's talk about that more, because like this is this
is why I asked that question earlier. Is this mostly about?
Is this game mostly about Kirk Farrence and the Kinnick
crowd and the Iowa Hawk guy's program and their culture.
Is it any is that it? Is it anything to
(41:17):
do with the actual guys that Iowa has maybe OUTSI
like their offensive line we talked about. I just feel
like this is so you know what this feels like
to me, you know what this really feels like to me.
This feels like, especially during like the Archie Miller era,
how teams talked about playing Indiana basketball at Assembly Hall.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
That's the perfect that is the perfect analogy, especially doing.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
Maybe the end of Tom Crean two.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
No, this is perfect Archie with Trace on the team.
That's what this is. That's what this is. Trace is
the offensive line. The rest of the team are kind
of just like.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
But they're going to Assembly Hall, We're going to Kinnick.
The crowd's a factor. We have to stop shooting ourselves
in the foot right. You know, Signetti before has talked
about pre snap penalties. He's talked about not letting the
crowd influence things.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
It's very rude to call Kirk Farence Archie Miller.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Oh yeah, no question, that's wildly disrespectful. Yeah yeah, awesome
football coach.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Yeah. But that being said, this is this is an
Archie Miller esque team that Iowa has right one position,
wildly right, wildly the world class.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
The defensive line is also very good for Iowa, like
Indiana's defense was pretty good with Archie, but the rest.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Of the rest of the skill positions are mediocre at best.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
And the running one of the two of the running
backs are injured, like useful running backs.
Speaker 2 (42:54):
Yeah, there's the top running back is out now too, Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
Yeah, And it's like Indian and Signetti's talked about the
pre snap penalties. He talked about how Indiana has brought
in players from programs that haven't won as many games.
He's talked about, you know, the Stephen Daily pickup, the
the Khalil Benson pickup, right, you know, guys coming over
(43:18):
from programs that haven't won a bunch of games. And
now you go to a place where it's eighty thousand
people and you haven't played a road game this season.
It just feels like Indiana is playing the situation more
than they're playing the opponent.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
Curist road game and being at Kinnick.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Yeah, you know, you know.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
That, you know, and there's a there's a little bit
of PTSD. There's a little bit of PTSD from the
last I don't know why I have chopsticks, but a
little bit of PTSD from the last time we played there. Right,
I was there, I was there, I was and I
hated every second of it. And so again, I collectively,
(44:02):
as a fan base, we've got into Kinnick with high
expectations before with a number in front of our team
and gotten our butts handed to us on national television.
Hopefully that doesn't happen again this this week. I don't
think it does.
Speaker 1 (44:18):
Is let the situation get to them in that game.
And now, I'll be honest, Iowa had way better players
on that team in twenty one, guys like Riley Moss,
Dane Belton, Jack Campbell. That team is really good. This
this this personnel is not there. Their trenches will have
(44:39):
NFL players. Outside of that, I don't know this Iowa.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Iowa always has decent skill position players. They always have
a really good running back. They always have DBS.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
Tracy.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
It doesn't feel like this team has that. They don't
have that same that they've had in the past. And
and that's that's not the discredit. Iowa was a program,
but just to just to be like it's this specific team,
it's this team doesn't happen. They might have it next year.
They were hoping to have it in the what's the
safety will.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
Is here?
Speaker 2 (45:17):
I was trying to say, Bob from from.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
From full Arsenal, Yeah, from Arsenal from Fulham, Yeah, yeah, like, no, no, no, no,
I don't know Savior, but I think he's number zero
and Iowa was secondary of the safety back there.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Yeah, it's just it may be number one. It's just
I don't know. I mean, he he might be an
NFL player. We'll see. I mean, man, as you look
at this game, what what's the one thing, what's the
one you know, stat category. What's the one part of
the game that you think will swing this game in
Indiana's favor, you know, in a sense or or even
(45:54):
And I was like, what's the what's the key stat here?
What's the key aspect of the game that you're paying
attention to that you think will make a major difference
in this contest on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (46:04):
Well, okay, so we've we've talked about how good the
defensive line is for Adenna. We've talked about how the
defense needs to make place. We've talked about how on
offense Banana Mendoze's hip and frontrun, or how the wide
receivers need to get more touches. I said, how Roman
Henby yeah needs to be more explosive. That's where I'm
(46:26):
going with this. I think if I you can go
on the road to Iowa and run the ball effectively.
This game becomes so much easier for Nana Mendoza's life.
He gets more time in the pocket to dissect the defense. Uh,
we chew up more clock and like, let's be honest, clock. Yeah,
(46:49):
that's that's what I'm saying. I was known to chew
up their own clock. You you start fast, and then
you're able.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
To run the ball.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
They cannot come back. That is, they do not have
the formula to do that. And then like if we
start and similarly to to to the running, if we
start just as fast as we did against Illinois, it's over.
It's over. This Iowa team will be unable to match
(47:17):
I use pace up and down the field. I don't
think they're going to go out and score sixty six
points at Iowa. I don't think if we look up
the scoreboard at the end of the game and I
use up thirty five to ten, that wouldn't surprise me
in the slightest.
Speaker 1 (47:34):
It would surprise me. I will say that I like
your point there about Hey, let's let's see if Roman
Hemby can and Lesia big play. Let's see if we
get that Mikhail Kamara standout moment that Aiden Fisher's stand
out moment. I think the point you made earlier, though,
I'm going to bring back up to the surface, which
(47:55):
is the turnover battle is one place I'm paying close
attention to, especially like especially like the key turnovers, you know,
like you know, it's like in you know, if if
Rnanda Mendoza throws an arm punt at the end of
the first half, I don't care, that's fine. I'm talking
(48:16):
about the meaningful sort of sack strips in opposing territory.
Talking about the picks, the interceptions. Indiana dropped two of
them in the Illinois game. I think it was Devin
Boykin and I can't remember who the other one was.
But there were a couple of plays there on the
defensive side that shit could have should have been picked sixes.
(48:38):
And I'm sure Brian Haynes is making his guys well
aware of that. Mark Karnowski will put the ball into
tight windows. He hasn't thrown an interception yet. He might
have had one. Yeah, he has one interception, but he's
had three turnover worthy plays. According to PFF. It's just
(49:02):
he's you know, it's not really his fault. A lot
of the time it's the receivers are taking forever to
create separation. Stuff like that. It's just at the end
of the day, I'm paying close attention to the turnovers.
The Iowa Hawkeys defense, Matt the Hawkeys. Kirk Ference's defense
has two takeaways this season through four games. That's it. Now,
(49:26):
They've only turned it over twice, So credit to them
for doing that. I'm not too surprised that kirk Ference's
team has only turned it over twice. I am surprised
that have only taken it away twice. And if Indiana
can just be disciplined from a ball carrying standpoint, from
a ball protection, ball security standpoint, I think that'll go
(49:49):
a long way. The other thing I'm gonna pay attention
to is shocker, the scoreboard is just pay you know,
make Iowa play from behind.
Speaker 2 (49:59):
Yeah, I said, start fast, right get ahead. They're not
going to be able to keep up.
Speaker 1 (50:05):
No pay attention to the scoreboard, folks.
Speaker 2 (50:07):
It's my name breaking, that's my game.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
Point of the game, that's my the thing. What to
watch for the scoreboard. But exactly as you were saying, uh, Indiana,
get out to a lead, get out to a lead.
Force Iowa to play from behind that look against Rutgers
had a fourteen to seven lead, Rutgers had a fourth
quarter lead. Iowa won. Credit to them. You know, that
(50:32):
was a very impressive win from Iowa going into a
pretty tough Rutgers environment on night. Game Like it was
kind of a bad schedule spot for Iowa in the
sense that nine out of ten times Iowa Rutgers is
what at noon, it's at three point thirty. And they
put that thing. They put that thing on a Friday
night and it was a blackout, and Rutgers really got
(50:53):
up for that game, and Iowa did a great job
coming out with a ten point win. I was very
I took paid close attention to that. I took notice
of that. And look, you know, yeah, yeah, and again
you know the way the game went, you know, it's
like one of those things where yeah, you know, Rutgers
(51:13):
had a fourteen to seven lead, Rutgers had a fourth
quarter lead, and I was still made it work, man,
and they won by ten and and and you tip
your cap, and you know, I'm sure Signetti and the
team are noticing those things. So Matt and I will
predict this game, talk about other Big ten contests coming
up in just a sec. But first it's time four
hour social media shout out and the folks again a reminder.
(51:36):

helps us grow this podcast. And find us at Twitter, Facebook,
and YouTube, at Indiana HQ and at the Hoosier sound
Man on Instagram or not Indiana HQ, but what are.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
We Indiana dot HQ, You will find us there, Matt.
Speaker 1 (51:57):
As we talked about, the sportsbooks have this one as
Indiana minus eight, something like a twenty eight twenty final
score from Kinnick. The Bill Connolly s and p Plus
model has this thirty twenty one in favor of Indiana,
giving Indiana seventy two percent chance of winning. You've said,
(52:19):
if the scoreboards is thirty five to ten Indiana, you
would not be surprised at the end of the day, Man,
who do you think? Who do you think wins this game?
And by how much?
Speaker 2 (52:30):
Oh? I use winning this game, just like I told
you last week, I use winning the game. I use
winning this game thirty one ten book it.
Speaker 1 (52:40):
Not concerned about Kinnick, not concerned about fifty two.
Speaker 2 (52:44):
I hate those people. I have a special there's a
special place not in my heart for Iowa fans. I
don't like those people. The last time I went there,
I had a terrible time. They were awful to me,
and I want bad things to happen to them, and
(53:04):
I hope that the thirty one to ten is the
start of that. And they think they can redeem themselves
by waving at six children. That's that doesn't help you, Okay,
putting putting makeup on an ugly face doesn't help. Take
that you fake midwesterns, all right? Well that.
Speaker 1 (53:29):
There have been a couple of scarring losses at Kinnick
in recent times. I don't like Tyler. The Tyler Sash game.
I think that was an nine.
Speaker 2 (53:41):
Yeah, that was really but I know what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (53:45):
As an undergrad, that was my welcome to UH that
was my welcome to IU football moment. Because Indiana goes
to Kinnick. It's a noon game. I think ESPN two
and I think it was thirty twenty eight to seven,
thirty five to seven. Indiana had the lead, and then
(54:08):
of course the twenty twenty one game. But all that said,
I do have Indiana winning. I do have Indiana winning.
I think the situation is going to present problems. I
think the environment, I think the atmosphere. I think the
(54:29):
first road game. I think Kirk Farence, like Matn. Where
would you put Kirk Farence in the Big ten current
twenty twenty five Big ten Football coach power rankings? Oh
Man got five. I think you have to see Ryan
(54:53):
Day and Kurt Signetti are at the top. At Dan
Lanning of course, sorry, so top.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
Three Ryan Day, Dan Lanning, hurt coach sig. I think
I put him comfortably at.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
Four right like I'm looking at Lincoln Riley. I think
has to prove a lot, including winning at Illinois on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (55:16):
Brett might even be up there too, but I think
he's a five.
Speaker 1 (55:21):
Yeah, you can talk about b Lamars or Farren's four
five five four. Franklin, No, I I I think, I
don't get me started on James Franklin got a great team.
Speaker 2 (55:35):
Don't get me started. Brot.
Speaker 1 (55:38):
I think has to win more games to prove himself.
Speaker 2 (55:41):
No, certainly.
Speaker 1 (55:44):
To prove himself way more is on the hot seat.
So yeah, like Fickles on Volcan Volcano. Yeah, the buyout,
it's the buyout, It's the Tom Allen conversation all over again. Yeah,
I do have Indiana winning this game. I think this
(56:07):
game goes over thirty one, thirty four, thirty four, thirty four,
twenty seven Indiana.
Speaker 2 (56:23):
I just don't see this Iowa oftense scoring twenty seven points.
Speaker 1 (56:27):
So they I fair enough.
Speaker 2 (56:29):
I think. I think my ten points that I said,
the thirty one to ten, I think seven those seven
of those points are going to be a special team
for turn touchdown because their return.
Speaker 1 (56:38):
Yeah, that's my point. I think I think I would
get some defensive or special teams touchdown in this game.
That's like my bold whatever, bold out of leftfield prediction.
I mean it might come in a game where I
will lose is by thirty, but you know, I think
Iowa's defense or special teams finds a way to score
once in this game. Hopefully it's when the game is
(57:02):
out of the question or whatever. Like that's what I think.
That's sort of my that's my bold prediction. Do you
have a bold prediction this game had a player, a
player who steps up unexpectedly something stat wise, anything bold
as far as a prediction from your.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
End hemby three rushing touchdowns, Man, that would be fun.
I like Roman hemby a lot.
Speaker 1 (57:29):
I really really think he's he's going to do something big,
whether it's this game, the Oregon game, the past.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
Game, it's common. Yeah, it's common. It's common. I don't
know what it is, but it's common.
Speaker 1 (57:41):
Yeah, Indiana led that Tyler Sash game twenty one to seven,
it looks like, and then twenty four to fourteen going
into the fourth and yeah, it got nasty real quick. Matt,
(58:02):
let's talk about our Big ten picks of the week.
We both have Indiana winning this game. You have Indiana
covering I don't. You have Indiana Iowa going under. I
have it going over. There are five other big ten
matchups on the slate this weekend. Our friends in Champagne
(58:23):
host USC. That's the That's another game involving ranked teams.
Ohio State goes to Washington and what should be an
absolute fireworks game that runs simultaneously to IU Iowa and
then the primetime game. I know we're all fired up
for the best primetime game this weekend. It's not Alabama Georgia.
(58:44):
It is Oregon, Penn State and Happy Valley should be
absolutely electric. Matt. As normally, as usual, we like to
give out upset picks, point spread, picks over unders for
this week across the Big ten. What stands out to you?
What are your one or two Big Ten picks of
the week this upcoming weekend? Ah?
Speaker 2 (59:06):
Alright, so I've been actually pretty good at these, I
think looking back on it, so I think my luck
of the week. Bet it, go to sleep, feel happy
about it, and never have to worry about it ever. Again.
Is Northwestern favored six and a half against UCLA at home?
(59:30):
I think that is absolutely disrespectful to Northwestern because Ucile
is an absolute dumpster fire. They are awful. They might
be among the worst Power five teams I've seen in
a very long time. They're really really bad, really really
really bad. So give me the wolf Pack to cover?
(59:58):
Did I Wildcats as a wolfpack? I was thinking of
NC State for some reason?
Speaker 1 (01:00:04):
Whatever does matter?
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
Give me, give me, give me, give me the Wildcats
too to cover there six and a half My upset
pick of the week, in a very hopeful upset, I
actually have two. I have Illinois beating USC at home. Hey, okay,
(01:00:27):
And my surprise one of the week is I have
Washington beating Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
And here's why it would be wild Okay, that's what
it's not this, it's realistic. It's just the discourse.
Speaker 2 (01:00:47):
This Washington team is good and people just don't understand it.
But they're good. They're good side. They're good last year too.
They're good on both sides of the ball. DeMont Williams
is awesome, awesome, he's such a player.
Speaker 1 (01:01:02):
And Ohio State Denzel Boston, Jonah Coleman, Wow, oh wow,
I thought problem.
Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
I think Texas is really bad and then to put
it on like the cherry on top of things is
not really bad.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Illinois or Texas neutral field, who wins?
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
I think it's Texas. I think Texas defense is significantly
better than anything Illinois bikes or something. Yeah, but I
think Texas offense is atrocious and that's all because of
Archie or arch Manaster. Well yeah, actually, well technically it'll
all becomes Yeah, technically is also be an arching. But
(01:01:49):
uh no, I think on the road, Washington's you know,
Husky Stadium is one of the hardest places to play
in the entire country for your first road stuff as
a starter for Julian said against the team again that
everybody and they got a chip on the shoulder because
they should at least be receiving votes. Yeah, vote, somebody
(01:02:11):
vote for these people with the top twenty five. Washington's good,
and they're they're playing with I stay at home. At
least hype them up a little bit. They're getting zero
votes nothing. They're not getting any respect at all. Game
Washington giving Washington cover if we're betting, like Washington just
upset the straight.
Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
If Washington wins that game. I mean, I don't want
to play the schedule game too much. But like, if
Washington beats Ohio State, there are they are they favored
at Michigan mid October? I don't think they're favored. It
might be like a three to six point underdog type
of situation.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
Man, there's no one team going on the road number
team going on the road with it were the first
year's starter.
Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
Their schedule is not all that intimidating or imposing. And
then like and if they put themselves in a position
where they're ten and one and they host Oregon to
end the season, like that feels like an extra credit game.
If you win, great, If you don't, well, okay, but
Oregon also coming to Washington if the Huskies are ten
and one is going to be the craziest college football atmosphere,
(01:03:22):
and that's on a weekend where you have Ohio State Michigan, Like,
you know, yeah, it's it's It's kind of fascinating, isn't it.
Indiana at Iowa is running at the same time as
Ohio State at Washington, and it feels like the same
type of game, right, A top twelve team going on
(01:03:44):
the road, tough environment, first road game with the quarterback
that hasn't played a road game like this before. It's
gonna be fun, it's gonna be fine, kind of fascinating,
sort of track these games in real time. First quarter,
second quarter, How does it look? What's going on? Who
makes the adjustments? Where does it go. I'm gonna take
Oregon to beat Penn State straight up three. You know,
(01:04:07):
it's Oregon plus three and a half. Just I mean,
you can just don't win these games. You can take
the Strea if you want. But like, Oregon is the
most impressive Big Ten team for me since the start
of the season. Like, yeah, I had a lot of
questions about Oregon coming into the year, and they have
answered every single one of them loudly and h yeah,
(01:04:29):
I mean, look, Penn State will probably start hot. For sure.
It's a sixty minute game, and if Oregon cranks off
a touchdown or two to create some nerves and tension
in that building, I think I think that'd be the.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
Most impressive win of the year, and no one's going
to take that away from them. Yeah, not only just
beating Penn State in Happy Valley is a a hard
task on itself, but beating a whiteout, yeah, oh for
sure is about as hard as it gets in the sport.
Speaker 1 (01:05:04):
Absolutely. And then I'm gonna take Minnesota to cover the
five that they're getting right now.
Speaker 2 (01:05:17):
Against Rutgers.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Against Rutgers, that game in Minneapolis, this is you know,
there's there are a couple of spots like this on
the schedule that are a bit weird across college football.
So Minnesota hosts Rutgers, Minnesota coming off of bye after
(01:05:38):
awful loss at California that I watched way too much
of a couple saturdays ago. That was that was the
true like Dejon viewing experience PAC twelve after Dark vibes,
no question about it. Cal looked really good in that game,
but Minnesota had to buy And now they get Rutgers.
(01:06:03):
What makes it an interesting schedule spot is that Rutgers
just played an intense, grueling, sixty minute emotional game against Iowa.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
Iowa.
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
Yeah, they lost, and now they got to get on
a bus, get on a plane to Minneapolis, and.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
I hope they're not busting to Minneapolis as a.
Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
Team team bonding, a team bonding, And I just think,
you know, by the way I said a similar spot
in college football, Texas A and M Auburn. I guess
Auburn at Texas A and M is something similar this week? Right,
A and M, big crazy win over Notre Dame coming
off of buy Now they get to reset, refocus. Auburn
(01:06:41):
grueling sixty minute game at Oklahoma last week, and now
they're six and a half point underdogs at Texas A
and M. Like, I want Texas A and M to
cover that six six and a half. Whatever you get there,
I would hold off it's a full seven. But if
you can get A and M minus six six and
a half, I like that. And this Minnesota minus five.
This just feels like this. You know, PJ. Flecken is whatever, now,
fifth seventh year, I don't care where it's at, but
(01:07:02):
you know he's a veteran coach. He knows what he's
doing coming off of by, he'll make a jost. Vince
Rucker is just kind of kind of sleepwalk through this game,
I think, and h eighthan calliak manage revenge game though,
So that'll be fun. Any other picks man across the
top twenty five across college football, If not, go for it.
It's your final thoughts here on this Friday. Plenty of
(01:07:22):
fun top twenty five matchups. So if you do have
any other picks, let him fly. But yeah, otherwise, anything
to wrap up us here on this Friday, Uh No,
not much.
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
Just uh again, super happy. I mean I feel like
every single outro we have recently is the same thing.
I've just been super happy with everything. Oh we got
a basketball commit man to talk about that. Yeah, Chase
one twenty Chase Branham twenty twenty Class twenty twenty seven
not really okay four and and and not related to
(01:07:56):
a bunch of the other games brandums out there. But
from Missouri, I believe, right.
Speaker 1 (01:08:03):
Yeah, he's from He's from Stomping, He's from in the base,
from the middle of nowhere. Yeah yeah, yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Really he came in second to was Honorable Mention player
for the Steph Curry camp. There we go. So, I mean,
a very very promising young guard.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
Right, and so.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Very very excited to see him in it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:32):
Who's you? I like it? I like it. Yeah, that's
how we had this, you know, final thought thing just
in case there's nothing we did nothing. If in case
there's something we didn't touch on, I'm gonna go and
just throw a couple of these other ones out here.
I'm just gonna I don't have a pick, but I'm
really excited to watch USC Illinois right just for narrative, schedule,
discourse reasons looking forward to that. It's a big game
(01:08:53):
for USC too. Everyone's crowning USC already with a fouri
and oh start like wow, what an accomplishment, you know,
as Matt said with Ohio State, USC hasn't beaten anybody
and uh and yet for some reason, they're getting a
lot of praise and premature crowning unless they go to
Illinois and win by twenty, in which case I'll be
(01:09:13):
very impressed. I'm going to say that Georgia covers the
three at home against Alabama if you can, if you
can find a two and a half, try to jump
on that. But two and a half three. I don't
really care. I feel like Tennessee should cover seven and
(01:09:38):
a half at Mississippi State. I don't I don't know.
There's a weird vibe around Tennessee that I'm not quite getting.
I guess I'm giving them credit for probably putting themselves
in a position to beat Georgia.
Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:09:51):
I know cow Bell Nation, but you know, I think
it should be there. Then I'm also taking BYU to
cover seven. Try to find a six and a half
if you can, but that's the after dark game at Colorado.
I would take b YU and a heartbeat there. Six
and a half seven. Notre Dame, Arkansas is going to
(01:10:13):
be weird. That's a weird one. That's really messed up.
That's really messed up. No, no, not many other upsets
popping out to me. So I'm in perfect position to
get caught off guard as much as possible on Saturday. Perfect.
I don't have anything else. I mean, it should be
a fun game. I just think, you know, my main
(01:10:34):
sentence from this matchup for Saturday is Indian is playing
the situation, the environment, the atmosphere, the intangible aspect of
the game more than they're playing the Iowah guys, the
players on the other team. You know, it's like, can
you navigate the crowd noise? Can you navigate the flags?
Can you navigate the you know, the mist call by
(01:10:56):
the refs? That makes the game harder to win because
when you go on the road, more calls go against you.
Is just the science of it, just the math of it.
Can you just navigate some of that stuff? You know? Right?
The Hawkeyes themselves. If you if you drafted the top
(01:11:17):
ten players to play backyard football across these two teams,
I think eight of them are Hoosiers. You know, you
might take alignment or two from Iowa. You might take
one or two of the defensive other defensive players on Iowa.
But like, if you're playing backyard football, especially backyard football,
(01:11:37):
it doesn't require trenches. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know,
it's like or if you're playing in a COVID environment
where there's no fans in the stands. I mean, I
think eight of the ten best players in this game
are on Indiana, but they're gonna be what is it,
eighty thousand, I think seventy five, eighty thousand and Chinnick.
(01:11:58):
So I'm like that you gotta you gotta play your best,
so you gotta beat the environment. You gotta beat the
atmosphere just as much as you gotta beat Iowa. But folks,
that about wraps it up for a three hundred fty
seconds show the Who's Your Sound? Are you so much
