(00:00):
- Whenever you're ready! (music)
(00:02):
- I am ready. We are here, finally!
- Welcome to our podcast. I'm Sarah - And I'm Djamila - And this is IKEA episodes!
So we are in IKEA, in IKEA Copenhagen and
(00:27):
this is our first ever episode. - Yeah! - We're excited.
- But do you, er, do you want us to present ourselves a little and a little bit of background?
- Yes, we can do that. Shall I start? - Yeah, go for it. - So I'm Sarah. I am
soon 23. I'm French
I...
(00:48):
moved to Copenhagen, er...
Almost two and a half years ago
Traveled a lot but now I'm back and I work in hospitality with my friend Djamila
- So, my name is Djamila and I would like to say that I'm at the end of my 20s. That was
months...
(01:09):
months ago (laughs)
I will not be discussing my age further (laughs) - That's okay
- But I also live in Denmark, in Copenhagen
And yeah, I also work in hospitality. That's where I met Sarah
- Yeah, we met working at the hotel... two years ago? - Yeah - More than that?
And we've been friends since. And there's one thing we need to say though (01:33):
we usually speak French, right? - We do
- Because you're from?
- Senegal, Dakar. - Yeah, so we usually speak French. English is our second, third, whatever language.
- Third language for me. - Yeah
- So we are more at ease in French, but we also wanted to be international
(01:55):
- We wanted to just be able to talk to as many people as possible and create this little platform and we wanted to talk to
as many people as possible and just create connection and share thoughts
So we figured English would be the right way
But you will be hearing some French words here and there. - Yeah, definitely. (laughs) - I think that's gonna be... that's gonna make it even more
(02:20):
Amazing. - Yeah - I'm excited. - It's inevitable and also it's very fun because it's part of our life
And we wanted to let people into our life - Exactly. - So yeah, that's also why we're doing this
podcast (02:31):
basically the main idea is that we just want to have a casual chat, right? - Yeah - Because we usually
meet up in Ikea,
we're gonna explain then the concept, but we usually meet in Ikea and just chat about life and
it usually gets very deep and very serious - Deep conversations, yeah - and we thought that our conversations they are
(02:56):
maybe not absolute truth, surely not, but they might help some people because usually we
chat together and we think out loud. Yeah, we just talk about life and just
We're trying to figure shit... things out
We figured why not figure it out with
a bunch of people, if possible, and just try to you know go through life
(03:21):
So we're helping each other, both of us, but then also we
hoping we can help someone and other people maybe listening - can help us!
Because we definitely don't have all the answers
So it's just like we want to find this fun platform and like create this fun platform where it's like you feel free to be yourself
(03:42):
So the concept of the podcast
As we said, just a casual conversation
But the twist is (03:48):
we're in Ikea. - We didn't want to lose our
originality
- Yeah, that's our ritual. - It's my favorite place
Like it's the place I always love to be and I feel most at
At ease. I'm a mom of two. I forgot to say that. I am a mom of two and going to IKEA it's my little break
(04:11):
so yeah! - and so we just
Wanted to take you with us because that's where we feel the most authentic
- And that's why our podcast is called Ikea Episodes. - Yes, it's not at all about Ikea
- Yeah - Well probably we will talk about it a little bit...
But it's not a podcast about Ikea. Also it's not,
time to say that, it's not affiliated with Ikea at all. Ikea hasn't approved anything about that
(04:38):
Everything we say is just our own opinions. It's nothing, it has nothing to do with Ikea
It's just the name because Ikea
We made it our studio. - Yeah, basically. Oh, yeah...
Nicely said, it is our studio!
For our first episode since we've been talking about this for so long and
(05:00):
Then of course life happened and so many things and we wanted to,
What is it called, to represent our journey to...
that brought to this moment and we
thought
as the first episode talking about (05:17):
procrastination!
- Yes, she nailed it. Oh my god. Djamila had to practice this word
well done! - I'm saying a big hello to a certain person called S, we will keep it that way - it's our sponsor
(laughs) no it's not - It's not our sponsor, but it's one of our biggest fan I think so far
(05:41):
- Wait until he listens (laughs) then we'll see - Yeah
So the theme we chose today because, right, because we relate to that and it's very, er
It's very linked to the podcast, but the future subjects
There will be... we will talk basically about anything so some subjects
We're gonna choose because they will be related to our lives, what we're living at the moment
(06:04):
But also we're hoping that we can get some input from the listeners
So Djamila has been working a lot on some social media
You know, platforms where we will be able to communicate! Feel free to write us. Yeah, we'll put all the contacts right in the description - in the description below (laughs)
So today our subject was procrastination because
(06:29):
We're basically doing this podcast to, in my opinion, to fight procrastination
- Yes! - We've been talking about that for how many? Two years. Almost since we met - I mean, since we met
We were like oh my god, we should...
Yeah, and we were like (06:43):
we will do it! - Yeah, because we talk a lot and we were like
Let's share with people, maybe some people, some very strange people will appreciate (laughs)
But, we were brainstorming for at least a year
(07:03):
We were you know writing down ideas, but then leaving them on the side...
We were caught up in our work lives... I was traveling, I wasn't in Copenhagen anymore
- Yeah, so we wanted to fight it and the first step was just go for it
Sit down and just start talking and that's what we're doing today!
(07:24):
- Yeah, that's what we're finally doing but even this, this small step it took us two weeks right? - Two weeks to get to it
- We went to Ikea, we scouted, we bought some new equipment,
we took some notes... it took us like several days to just say like (07:36):
okay now we're ready.
- We're ready. Yeah, and even.. even that we are still like (07:41):
are we?
Just before we started recording. I was like Sarah, I don't know... - I know! We started just gossiping, talking about other the stuff
Anything but the podcast - yeah, and I think like everyone goes through this like where you want to do something, you're excited about it and then
What is it, like you try to figure out (08:01):
what is it that is stopping me from doing it? And
We've actually been asking ourselves like (08:06):
what is it that is making us not go for it?
Because we want to do this. We we feel like this is something that could be fun because that's the main thing for us
It's having fun. It's like like capturing our
Fun moments together and sharing it of course we're not gonna share everything. Let's keep some secret to ourselves!
(08:30):
Let's think mysterious (laughs)
But like what is stopping us?
So...
We were talking about :
procrastination - Yeah
And I wanted to know what is it that you think may like create
(08:50):
Procrastination. - I can talk about what creates it for me. - Okay - Because I kinda
I analysed myself a lot... - You're a perfectionnist, I'm not judging (laughs)
- No, but that's exactly that! Before we wanted to make the podcast I kinda analysed, I thought about it and...
my procrastination
(09:11):
I think there are several things that cause it, but the main thing is when, like, talking about creative stuff like this podcast or...
Making music or whatever,
- Mm-hmm. - I procrastinate because I'm always afraid that what I'm gonna do
I'm not gonna be satisfied with it
So (09:29):
"Oh, no, if I do it now, it's not gonna be great.
Oh no, I'm not ready. Oh, no, I need to prepare more." And then I postpone it and I never do it. So I have so many projects
like ideas, things that I've had for a long time and I
I've never done it because I was always procrastinating and
(09:51):
usually it's like...
My mom says I procrastinate a lot actually (laughs) and she's right. I noticed it. I procrastinate when I have
important stuff to do. - Mm-hmm. - Like for example
apply to jobs! Or...
write a thesis! (laughs)
Stuff like that. My thesis, okay, let me give you that example.
(10:13):
I had to write this paper when I was in uni at the end of my bachelor's degree and it had to be like 80 pages or something
Which is very small for a thesis, but it was a lot for me and
I had almost two years to do it. So I took an extra year in uni just to finish that paper and
until the very end, like maybe
(10:34):
Two or three weeks before the delay [deadline]. I still had written only half of it and
Every day I would feel guilty. I would be like (10:40):
"Oh my god, I have to write that paper. I can't do anything else."
But the thing is I was procrastinating. I didn't feel ready to write it. I didn't... I wasn't inspired,
I didn't have ideas, I was frustrated. So every day, I was in this vicious circle:
I wouldn't do it because I wasn't inspired but then I would feel guilty because I was like (10:56):
"Oh I have to do it!
I have to do it!" and I was procrastinating, procrastinating and half of it, I
wrote the day before sending it, during the night!
- That was something I used to do - Mm-hmm
- But for me it's like, it's not actually because I'm a perfectionist. It's fear.
(11:20):
The reason why I procrastinate is because I am scared of the result. I am scared of... I...
I think I'm getting better at it, but I'm very aware of what people will say and then when I'm doing something I'm thinking:
"What would people say?"
The fear of the judgment,
fear already of the unknown, it's a huge thing. - Oh yeah yeah, that goes together. - But also fearing what... how it will be
(11:48):
seen, how will people
receive it and what they would think. - So for you it's like, you're scared of the judgment of other people - Mm-hmm
- But what if you know that what you're making is
great for you? What if you know... what if you're satisfied about what you're doing, you're passionate with it,
you know it's the right way? - Exactly, and I think this is the reason why we're here today, it's because I want to do this.
I'm genuinely like (12:13):
just the thought of it, it makes me happy and like, I've been working a lot on
not caring about
others...
How they see you, the judgment of others.
So it's like (12:25):
"no, this makes me happy then I want to do it!"
Er, although it is scary. Just before we stopped,
one of the reasons why you could see on my face that I was getting to that place and I'm grateful that you were like:
"Let's start walking." - Yeah, we had a little break,
we had a little tour in Ikea
(12:46):
- That just helped me like go through this anxiety that I was...
That I was having while we were recording.
It's a good thing to talk about it, I think, it's like a good way to...
- Yes, we're here for it. - Yeah, and I was just having it
I was just having this anxiety and Sarah could see it and she was like (13:03):
"Okay."
- So can you explain like what...
What were the thoughts that were going in your head?
- Judgment. I was just recording and talking and I was just thinking (13:12):
"Oh my god. Oh, I sound like this
Oh my god my voice. Oh, what would it be...
Okay, maybe we shouldn't do this." and then it made me have this look of like
not sadness, but like I was already disappointed in myself because I wanted to cut it and just
(13:33):
forget about it.
- But this is where it's very linked to procrastination because I know we're talking many about fear
but I think it's directly causing procrastination - Yeah - Because if you had listened to your fear
we would have stopped today, right? - Yes
- We would have stopped - We would have been like on our way to eating or something
- And we would have said like (13:52):
"Oh, let's do it another day." Okay, but that other day probably you would have had the same fear, right? - Same, probably
- And... it's a vicious circle. It never stops if you don't fight this fear.
I think the first step, I'm not sure, of course we are
More than welcoming people's feedback, but for me the first step is just accepting it
(14:16):
And just saying yes, this is going on and that's what happened before where as soon as we stopped recording
I was able to say (14:22):
"Yes, this is going on." and
breathe it out and have a chat and say... and then you were like (14:25):
"You want to continue?" "Yes."
- So it's interesting you said you kind of stopped your fear and your procrastination by being aware of it
- Yes, I think it's the first thing by just like saying (14:38):
"This is going on." And this is why we're here today because
I realised like ,the reason why when we had time to do it we will push it,
it was because I was in my head sometimes just thinking (14:50):
"Oh,
would this be like this?" because for me it's the fear of the
judgement once again and
it makes me... and then I was like (15:00):
"No, I want to do something that makes me happy. This makes me happy,
I want to go for it." And it's just facing it and I think for
for me at least for a lot of years
I have been fighting this and I... without even knowing it and then the moment I realised it,
I'm still going through it. - Yeah, of course! Everyone is. - But you're able to...
(15:21):
breathe it out
and not go through that cycle. - Yeah, because many people, they're not able to do what you're doing, they...
like, and I've been like that for a long time (15:31):
I thought procrastination was just being lazy. - Yes!
- That's not what it is! It's not being lazy. Being lazy is just being lazy!
And then you eventually you do the thing, right? Later, but you do it. - Exactly, you do it last minute and then it creates
this stress and you create this vicious cycle of like, unhealthy lifestyle. - Yeah, and also what's interesting I think is
(15:54):
you
fear the judgment of other people, where I'm very different (15:56):
it's that I fear my own judgment.
I'm my worst critic and it keeps me from creating stuff all the time because every time I do something all the fun
goes away because I'm just like "Nah, this is not good. I'm not satisfied." - Yeah - So... I don't know what's harder.
(16:17):
It's... probably they're both as hard as each other. - Yeah, and I'm sure there is... like, other people have other reasons why
they are procrastinating.
And like, it's interesting to know (16:27):
what is it? Like, are we able to actually recognize it,
pinpoint it? "This is the reason and it's creating this vicious cycle of me
not wanting to do something and me wanting to hide away from
my potentials. Because that's what it does though! Yeah, it's quite interesting. I'm...
(16:50):
more than
er, excited to see what it can to see what people... what makes them procrastinate and
would they even...
what is it called, categorize it as procrastination. - Exactly. Do you guys realize when you're procrastinating and if you do (17:03):
how? What makes you realise it?
What makes you think like (17:13):
"Oh, shit, this is what I'm doing" - Or do you just say "Oh, I'm so lazy, I don't like doing anything"?
Because of course we all love watching TV.
But sometimes we do it,
watch these things, we binge watch things because we are running away from something.
Sometimes it's because it's a good show. Let's just be honest! (laughs)
(17:33):
But
a lot of times for me is because I'm running away from
some kind of reality.
- That's true. Like, it's okay to have lazy days, we all have lazy days, lazy weeks sometimes, that's fine...
- Yeah, that's fine! - Yeah, but if you're like (17:46):
"Oh my gosh, I'm so lazy" everyday... - ...constantly, yeah. - There's a problem.
There's something deeper. - Yeah. I wonder...
Is there another thing than being aware of it? That can make you fight it. Is there other
tools that you can use, one can use to help?
- I thought about one! - Yeah, let me know. - It's a bit of an extreme one... (laughs)
(18:08):
- Ouch, I'm scared already...
- Sometimes I feel that the motivation to push you to stop procrastinating, sometimes it doesn't come from yourself.
It comes from other people, like someone giving you tough love and telling you (18:19):
"Hey look, you're procrastinating on this."
"Just do it." - Yeah, that's true. Like you...
harrassing my phone (laughs)
And saying like (18:33):
"Go to bed Djamila." So I have these moments where I sleep and nothing will wake me up (laughs)
And that has happened. So yesterday, in order for me to be up today, she was just like "Go to bed."
- I tried. (laughs) - And she made sure to say (18:46):
"Did you put this to charge?" and then I'll say
"I took the kids, I have an hour to spare before you come." And then she was like:
"What?" - Uh, oh. - "Sleeping?!" She had like a little anxiety. (laughs)
- So yeah, well, that's small things, right? So...
(19:06):
but
sometimes there are like, bigger subjects where
you know, eventually you're the one making the decision but sometimes you need to have a kick in the butt. - It's kind of like pushing though.
It's like "Oh, did you edit this?" "I don't know..." "But you can do it!" And then it pushes you to continue and actually... doing it.
- Yeah, I've heard some people for example, when they want to start fitness...
(19:31):
(laughs) I'm not pointing at you! No, no, no... - I was trying to stay away from that subject!
(laughs) - You will see where I'm going!
Some people when they want to start fitness or start running or something,
they do that with a fitness buddy
because they can hold themselves... each other, they can hold each other accountable.
So if one of them doesn't really have the motivation, probably the other one has it
(19:55):
And then they will end up going as much as they had planned to go, right? That's what we're doing with the podcast.
- That's true. - Because I've always wanted to make a podcast
but again, I was blocked in my fear and my procrastination and never did.
But now that you're here and we're working on this project together, we're like (20:08):
"Let's do it!" - We can do this! - Mm-hmm.
So to make it more
concrete for people,
are there examples of stuff where you procrastinate in your daily life?
- The first one is... looking for a job! (laughs)
(20:30):
- Yes, actually we share that one!
- But also... it comes also in different... like, for this one it's different.
It's not because I'm scared of being judged. It's just because I'm scared of the unknown.
I am very comfortable where I'm working now
although I feel like I'm not challenged. - Are you? - Yes, I am too comfortable.
(20:53):
And I know I need to challenge myself. I know I'm not happy in the workplace.
Not because of the work, it's because of that...
You know when you go to work and then you have this excitement in you?
-Mm-hmm. - I don't have that.
But then just the thought of being with new people and getting to know people and... is it going to be a workplace where you can have... communication.
Because I am not crazy (21:17):
I believe that all workplaces are crazy to some extent!
Because the main idea is to gain money.
- True. - But I believe that when there is communication, it makes it somehow healthy.
And that's what I feel like we have to some extent in our current workplace.
(21:39):
- Yeah, I would say that.
So the thing that makes you put away this thing of looking for jobs... - Is the fear.
- It's the fear of the result basically, right?
- Yeah, of the unknown, in this place, for this case it's like the unknown
of going and just regretting. Because you're like (21:53):
"Oh,
I should have just stayed, like, stayed in the place I know and whatever.
- It's the fear of making a decision and like, actually changing your life.
- Yeah and like I've read a lot of things where people are like
What was it they were saying? "The harder decisions are in general... they create the best outcome."
(22:19):
- That's also something we're going to talk about maybe on a more personal level I'd say?
In our next episodes. - Oh, that's true! That's exciting! - Stay tuned.
- That is actually exciting.
- But yeah, I see what you mean.
- Yeah.
- It's like, it's a big contradiction though that we have as humans
because you do know that you want to change your life, right?
(22:43):
That's a feeling you have and you have it every day...
You know you want some novelty.
You know all of that and you're craving it and you need it, right?
And at the same time...
this fear, you know, they're not compatible!
- No! You can't, you can't want to change your life and also be scared to change it
because then you don't do anything!
(23:03):
- Yeah and it's crazy because I went to the extent to push myself
To find another another job... I went to the extent to telling my manager:
"You know what? I'm letting you know, I am back in the market for job search!"
And actually the reaction made it even harder
(23:23):
because it wasn't like a judgment, it was just like:
"If that's what you need..."
"I'm here of course to support you."
And I was just like (23:30):
"Oh, no!"
He acknowledged that he can...
Like, of course he can see why I want to do this
and he's like (23:38):
"Of course I'm here to support you."
"If that's what you need."
But then the reaction makes you realise like,
"Yeah."
"These are the reasons why I'm afraid"
"And I'm procrastinating." Like, I genuinely...
And this is...
It's crazy to me, because after that meeting
I have not sent one motivation letter
(23:58):
- No?
- I have not applied to one company
I am still...
And I'm not saying the job place is perfect.
They have been situations, whatever...
But it has just...
It made it harder for me to find something else
And I was just singing there like
"Okay."
"I'm scared."
- But maybe it's also easier for you now to think:
"Oh actually this workplace wasn't so bad"
(24:20):
"Oh maybe I was feeling good there"
"Oh I probably won't find better"
Obviously you will find better
Because there are so many options
- Yeah.
- It's easier to blind yourself to that!
And just be like
"No, you know, actually..."
"I have so much to lose"
"I shouldn't do that"
And then you don't do it.
- That's the key!
You feel like you have...
You will lose.
So you're like (24:39):
"Ugh..."
"Is it worth it?"
- After I completed this paper for uni
I was in the same situation as you were.
Actually, even worse, because I wasn't very very unhappy at work.
- Okay
- It was high season in hospitality
and there were many things in my life
where... that made me unhappy,
(24:59):
I felt trapped,
I was very...
Yeah, very unhappy,
And, every morning,
when going to work
or every afternoon,
I was telling myself:
"Nah, today... today I'm resigning."
- "Today is the day."
- Yeah.
Every day for...
(sigh) months really.
And I don't think I was even looking at jobs. (laugh)
- No, it came to you.
(25:21):
- It came to me! (laughs)
Yeah, the way I "solved" this was just me...
er, getting a job opportunity
and... and seizing it!
That's the thing.
I could also...
I'm still proud of me because
I said yes.
- It took you time to seize it though, you were like:
"Should I really?"
- Actually it was partially because of you.
Because I remember
I was talking about this job
and I kept saying like:
(25:42):
"Oh... I'm scared."
"I'm scared." because it was for six months,
it was moving to another country,
I wasn't sure what would happen afterwards,
bla bla bla... there were many things
to be taken into account, right?
So I was telling you:
"I'm scared, Djamila!"
"I'm so scared!"
"What am I going to?"
"Should I do it?!"
And I remember this
as it was yesterday.
You told me:
"Sarah."
(26:02):
"Even when you saying you're so scared..."
"I can see your smile."
- Yeah, your eyes were shining.
- "Your smile is all over
your face!"
And I was like:
"Oh wow!"
"Yeah you're right!" (laughs)
So I had to take it.
Because I wanted it so much
and I'm happy I didn't let this fear...
you know, take this opportunity away.
- Because that was a big change, that was like... - Big big change in my life.
- I don't think I would have had the balls!
(26:23):
But you did it! - Nooo...
but again it's just like,
if there's a fear that's blocking you
you just take the leap, and then...
- Like, push yourself.
It's not, so easy though...
It's so easily said.
It's so hard...
to do.
- But when you do it once
it makes it easier.
The next times you will remember that
one time you said yes
and good things happenned.
- Yeah that's true...
(26:45):
I'll still have fear. (laughs)
- Yeah, no obviously!
The fear doesn't disappear.
- No...
Not at all.
- Definitely.
- Maybe if we can finish on something... er...
So what's our conclusion?
Like, what...
What solutions do we have then to
improve our relationship to procrastination?
(27:07):
It doesn't have to disappear.
It never will.
- No. I think it's just to be...
To be nice with yourself
and not be so hard.
I think being hard
on yourself makes you procrastinate even more.
So for me it will be that.
To just be gentle
and just understand...
(27:27):
And try to understand yourself
and be like:
"Why am I going through this?"
"Why is this so hard for me to do?"
"Something I want to do!"
And then from there
I'm sure
the answer will come
and...
And if other people, of course, they have other
ways,
they are more than welcome to let us know!
- Yeah and I would say...
(27:47):
You know, the more you grow up
and the more you get to know yourself, right?
(laughs) That's coming from a 23-year-old
so clearly I'm not there yet!
But...
when you get to know yourself
you can get to know your patterns
and see like
what are excuses
and what are legitimate
things, obstacles to the thing you want to do.
But if you start seeing your excuses
(28:10):
maybe question yourself.
Never stop asking questions about
why you do this,
why you think like this,
and then it leaves you
options to act on it.
Or not!
That's fine
if you don't feel ready to act on something
but...
Yeah, and I'm also talking to myself
because that's clearly
advice I'm giving to myself
and I need to...
follow. - Because that's actually the keyword that you said
was (28:31):
feeling ready.
Because you can find out something,
you can know...
Like
for me now, I know why I'm not looking for jobs
although I want to
you know, I want new adventures
and so on...
But I know why.
But do I still feel ready?
- But sometimes the line is thin
between, you know
not being ready
and giving yourself excuses.
(28:54):
So, my therapist actually told me that.
And she was like:
"If there's an idea keeping you back,
in the back of your mind
but you always find excuses
and that lasts for... five years.
Maybe, give up on it?
Maybe that's just not for you!
Just, there has to be like...
you know, a balance,
a reasonable amount of time
where you're in this grey zone,
(29:14):
where you don't know if you want to do it
or if you don't...
If you're ready or not.
- Yeah.
- So...
Yeah!
Know yourself...
Be gentle
with yourself.
- Be gentle...
Oh my god.
Yeah.
- Keep asking yourself questions
- And it's okay...
we don't need to all have it figure out.
And that's what...
(29:35):
That's one of the things
we want to really emphasize
and like, put out there.
We don't need to figure everything out.
And with that...
comes our second episode.
We are very excited.
It's going to be a more personal... This was quite personal.
- Are we going to do a little teaser?
- Yeah!
A little teaser.
Like this was personal already! - Yeah, definitely.
- But this one is quite personal.
(29:55):
I don't know if you want to tell the title?
Tell people the title?
- Shall we? Shall we?
- I think we shall!
- Okay, we're teasing it then!
- We're teasing it all the way.
And it's about...
- "Forbidden fruit"
- It is about the forbidden fruit.
- Join us for our next little tour
in Ikea!
We don't know which Ikea we'll be in.
That's exciting!
- Yes!
(30:16):
- Because I want to know all the different Ikeas!
Sorry. (laughs)
I just... I'm so excited.
- Join us next time for a coffee
and a little... (laughs) - ...tour of Ikea.
- And a little
plant-based hot dog! (laughs)
And er...
Yeah!
- In our...
Ikea Episodes!
- Ikea Episodes!
(laughs)
