Speaker 1 (00:00):
Much better, much better. Now I can hear yourlt sounds.
It's much better.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
It's awesome. All right, we're ready to go.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
So we're on the line with Joe Perry, founding member,
legendary lead guitarist of Aerosmith, my favorite band in the
whole world. Now, Joe, I just got to say, if
I listed all your accolades and accomplishments, it would take
up all our time.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
So I just want to say, you.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Are You're the best. I love you guys. Now, last
time you and I talked, it was during the pandemic.
You were getting ready to do Rock and Roll Fantasy
Camp here in Hollywood.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, it was a couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so and so much has happened since then.
Of course you're going out on this solo tour with
the Joe Perry Project. So excited about that, playing hard
rock live in Hollywood. So Joe, first, tell me how
this project came to be and who's in the band.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Well, I just it was last like the first of
the year. I just I had the you know, I
just put out two two solo records. Really it was
it was it was one uh, and then I had

(01:21):
some extras left over, and then I ended up writing
some more songs and actually Chris Robinson sang on one
of them and Robin Xander sang on another one, and
we so I needed I put out two versions of it.
So anyway, that's a sweet cile in manifesto and then

(01:43):
there's the second one to Mark two. So anyway, so
I was thinking about it would be I'd really want
to play some of these songs live, but you know,
it's like everybody's working, you know, anybody that would you know,
be able to get up on stage with many chances
out of there already you know, doing their thing. So my, my, my,

(02:08):
my dream list, And it ended up with Chris Robinson
and Robert Leo, you know, Chris Robinson from the Black Crows,
Robert Leo from St. P And he suggested his drummer
Eric and uh of course Brad and and uh I

(02:29):
got but Johnson, who plays with it with Aerosmith and
he plays with me in the in the Hollywood Vampires,
and whenever I go out these days, you know, he's
he's there on the keyboards and vocals, and so trying
to find everybody that had some free time, it was tough.

(02:50):
So we finally looked ahead and this this August run
was when everybody was free. I mean, as it is,
a couple of guys are going to miss some of
the rehearsals, but you know, I mean, we're all professionals here.
You know, I think we'll be able to pull it together.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I'm betting. I'm betting you can.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
That's the lineup. So anyway, that's a great lineup.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Joe, you know, I I'm I'm probably giving away my
age a little bit, but I did see the Joe
Perry Project.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
What was it back in like the eighties or something? Right?

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Wow, Okay, yeah, see I've been around for a while.
It's been a while. It's you know, I've been doing
this to keep my chops going, you know what I mean.
And I guess it's not like I've you know, been
able to keep keep keep going out and touring on

(03:46):
a regular basis like you would like with a regular band,
that kind of thing. And it's like I just just
two of us around and and wants to get out
and go out and have some fun and then we'll
we'll put a steps together and some of them and
the fans know that that they don't know what we're
going to play. But you've got to figure with Chris.

(04:08):
You know. The last time was Gary from Extreme you know,
saying singing to the vocals, and you know, I mean,
I got I got to think people are going to
be entertained, whether you know the songs or not. You know.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
So anyway, Yeah, I can't wait to see it.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
And you know, I'm guessing you'll probably do a few
Aerosmith songs, right.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Well, that was part of the reason why I wanted
to have Brad because you know, there are some songs
that I mean, I like to do deep deep cuts.
There's some songs that Brad and I have never played
with Aerosmith. You know, there was a period when when

(04:53):
I wasn't in the band, he wasn't in the band,
and they put out some records and we never got
a chance actually go out and play some of these times.
So uh so, you know that was that was part
of the you know, I was hoping to would be
up for it, and he is.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
So that's excellent.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
It's gonna sound so so it is. It's kind of
Aerosmith's heavy the set list, but it's some some uh
some of the some of the hits and then some
of the deep cuts that you know, uh, if you
if you listen to the records, you know, you probably recognize,
but we never seem to end up on an Arrowsmith's setlist. Well,

(05:35):
they're on my set list.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Well, and I saw that you said seeing this show
will be like a garage band on steroids.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, yeah, pretty much, because it's like, I don't know
what we're gonna do, right, and we we have a
pretty good idea of what songs we're playing, but you know,
I'll change the set in the middle and it's it's
it's loose, you know, and listen. And I was talking
with h Robert about it, you know, Robert, Yeah, you know,

(06:10):
don't don't tell anybody fish, but you know, we're really
updated entertain each other. Yeah, everybody in the band is
so good. It's like I'm playing, you know, we're playing
some Black Crows song.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
And it's like, oh, that's great.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
I love those tunes, you know. And it's it's that
kind of thing. So you never know what we're going
to pull out.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
You know, so the Beast surprises. Yeah, that is so exciting.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Now, Joe, before we run out of time, I do
want to ask you about Aerosmith because, as all the
fans know, you guys wound up having to cancel that
tour a couple of years ago Steven's vocal injury. So
a couple of yeah, so a couple of weeks ago,
and you know, the fans were so disappointed. I know
you guys know, and I know you guys felt so

(07:00):
bad about it. So a couple of weeks ago, I
think the first time the fans really got to see
Stephen perform was that. Yeah, I thought, Ozzie back to
the beginning show, and I think most of us were
like shocked that Steven sounded great and he had his voice.
And then I want to say, it was like a
day or two later, all of a sudden things started

(07:21):
popping up that you were hinting at a possible Aerosmith reunion.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Is that true?

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well, you know, it takes more. You know, his vocals
are definitely coming back. I mean, but it takes more
than just being able to play your instrument, to be
ready to get out and actually do it tour. I mean,

(07:50):
I've got to think. And this is stuff Stephen and
I have talked about a lot, you know, especially since
this you know, this injury, which was such a ago
and to say that we feel bad about it, it was
like such an understatement.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
I'm sure.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
I mean, we feel so so fucking bad about it.
I mean for the fans and and but tickets.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
And yeah, we were heartbroken.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
I mean it was a it was a I'll tell you,
it's probably one of the worst things. I'm sure. I
don't want to No, no, we.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Don't have to get into that.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
I'm just wondering if what I'm seeing in the news
about you teasing, did you really tease? Is it possible
that there'll be maybe a one off?

Speaker 1 (08:34):
I you know what, if I was a betting man,
which I am, or also, I wouldn't have started his hand,
you know. I uh, I would bet there's going to
be at least some some kind of one off, you know.
I mean like with Joey, you know, I mean he

(08:57):
physically just you know, it's hot, but he's he's so
beat up from playing all these years. Yeah, And if
any you know drummers out there, no, I mean, it
takes it out of it, you know. And you start
do that fifty or sixty years man, Sure, you just
get to the point you can't and you know this,
and the same is true for everybody. I mean, it's

(09:20):
it takes it out in it. So I think that,
but I think that it is. There's got to be
some way because we always, like I said, talking to
him all the time, and it's like, this isn't the
this isn't the way we want to go out, you
know what I mean. And so we'll see. But I

(09:41):
would bet it's going to be at least at least one.
But I can't say anyway. You know, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
I understand, and you know, I've been a fan so long.
My Aerosmith Spidey sense tells me that that will happen
even if it's a one off, because you know, you guys,
you I'm thinking, if you can make it happen, you
guys will even if it's one show.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Well, you know, I mean we've we've pulled pulled the
marshmallows out of the fire more than once. Yes, you know,
I mean the story is uh. I look back at
it and I'm like amazed, you know, to think, you know,
what we did in the seventies and then we started

(10:29):
over again, you know, in the eighties and so on.
So it's like, you know, That's why I would say
I would I would put my money on some some
kind of uh you know, event event or show or
something like that. But I really don't know yet, you know,

(10:49):
but you know it's on the edge. And with you know,
everybody in the advance feels like, well, you know, at
least we can do We've got to one more. Yeah,
I just don't know when. So when we go out
there and play on this tour, you know, we're going
to be playing some songs that you know, we're gonna

(11:10):
keep the uh for Brad and they at least we're
going to be doing the uh, you know, waving waving
the flag and get to the songs live and uh,
you know, and uh, there's there's some in there that
I've I've always wanted to play and we never did
and uh and then there's some others that everybody will recognize. It.

(11:33):
I was kept me, kept me awake at nights trying
to put the set list together. I'll tell you it's
like with especially with you know guys that are there,
you know, there are headliners in their own rights, and
they're all they've got there there there, you know, they're
fans and it's like me being one of them. So

(11:56):
I mean I could do I could put a set
together with just as tea songs and black close songs,
you know, and uh the first set list had like
almost fifty songs on it, and then it then it
took a while to cose it out and try and

(12:17):
try and because everybody in the band had had requests
that were like, uh and what they weren't their songs.
It was like, you know, like Chris said, you know,
we've got to play this is this is this one,
that Ersmith song, this one, well even let's play my
Fish you finished, Let's play you know, and uh, and

(12:38):
then we also the songs that we want to cover,
I mean, and we'll do a little of that, you know.
I mean, uh so anyway, and then you don't know,
because like I said, there might be a song that
we all know and maybe hadn't rehearsed it. We'll just
pull out of the hat and give it a try. Yeah,

(13:00):
And uh that's the thing that's just the whole vibe
of My My My Project thing is you know, it's
about you know, we're just hanging around in the garage
having fun and to want to come along and watch
along listen.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
I know the fans are really excited. And I found
out you were going to play hard Rock Live, I
was thrilled and I know the fans are too, so
we can't wait to see you. And wow, that show
is like less than a month away. I guess you
kick it off in Tampa is show number one? And
then yeah, and then you're here in Hollywood for show
number two.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah. I'm from Newly Glad we're able to get because
usually we play in the northeast, right, but you know,
we're able to stat down here, which is great. And
then uh, you know that's playing uh Tampa and Hollywood.
We go up to Canyon and do a couple shows there.
But I think the high point for us is going

(14:03):
to be when we opened to the Who at Fenway
Park in Boston.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Thank you for mentioning that, because I wanted to bring
that up.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
How excited are you about that?

Speaker 1 (14:14):
Well? It was like out of the blue, you know,
I mean, we we when we were on we had
a tour of the the domes over in uh Uh
in Japan, uh Soccket Dome, Tokyo Dome. It was five

(14:35):
or six, you know, we played some some of the
other venues, but Who opened for us because they'd never
played in Japan and so they wanted to, you know,
go over and I mean, this is it was a
while ago, but uh well look when when we heard that,
it was like, you're kidding me? Who opening for us?

(14:58):
I mean, I remember being before when Aaron Smith was
still just a twinkle in my eye being the Who
in a five hundred sea club in nineteen sixty eight,
you know, I mean, wow, you know, I mean, so
it was just I don't know, I mean, there was
talk about us even doing the doing their European tour,

(15:21):
but at that point the band wasn't even you know,
solid yet everybody had plans to go out. There was
just no way we could do it. And then we
talked about doing more shows with the Who, but again
STPs already got gigs and in the black clothes, they

(15:41):
got you know, you know and all that, and so
you know, this was the investor could squeeze in and
they were they were, you know, sensitive enough to the
to the issues to at least let me play up
with them in Boston and then having play out in

(16:01):
LA at the Hollywood Bowl.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
That's fast, fantastic.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
It's going to be a good show too, because it's
it's like the I think it's the last. It is
their tour, so.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
And this is their final tour.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
That is a huge n you know, you know anywhere,
it's gonna be a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
That would be great and we can't wait to see
you here again. That show is coming up August fourteenth,
hard Rock Live in Hollywood, my favorite venue. Folks could
get more information on tickets and all that. Joe Perry
dot Com and Joe I, thank you for checking in
with us and giving us an update. Can't wait to
see you.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Sure, thanks a lot, Thanks for having me on of course. Yeah,
we'll see it. We'll see you there, Okay, all right,
all right bye, Joe, have a good have a good
rest of the day. Thanks you too, man, Bye, by bye.
