Chapter nine, vibration. Nothing rests, everything moves, everything vibrates. The
Kabalian the great third Hermetic principle, the principle of vibration, embodies the truth
that motion is manifest in everything inthe universe, that nothing is at rest,
(00:21):
that everything moves, vibrates, andcircles. This Hermetic principle was recognized
by some of the early Greek philosophers, who embodied it in their systems,
but then for centuries it was lostsight of by the thinkers outside of the
Hermetic ranks. But in the nineteenthcentury physical science rediscovered the truth, and
(00:44):
the twentieth century scientific discoveries have addedadditional proof of the correctness and truth of
this centuries old Hermetic doctrine. TheHermetic teachings are that not only is everything
in constant movement and vibration, butthat the differences between the various manifestations of
the Universal Power are due entirely tothe varying rate and mode of vibrations.
(01:10):
Not only this, but that eventhe all in itself manifests a constant vibration
of such infinite degree of intensity andrapid motion that it may be practically considered
as at rest. The teachers directingthe attention of the students to the fact
that even on the physical plane,a rapidly moving object such as a revolving
(01:33):
wheel, seems to be at rest. The teachings are to the effect that
spirit is at one end of thepole of vibration, and the other pole
being certain extremely gross forms of matter. Between these two poles are millions upon
millions of different rates and modes ofvibration. Modern science has proven that all
(01:55):
that we call matter and energy arebut modes of vibratory mode, and some
of the more advanced scientists are rapidlymoving toward the positions of the occultists who
hold that the phenomena of mind arelikewise modes of vibration or motion. Let
us see what science has to sayregarding the question of vibrations in matter and
(02:17):
energy. In the first place, science teaches that all matter manifests in some
degree the vibrations arising from temperature orheat. Be an object cold or hot,
both being but degrees of the samething, it manifests certain heat vibrations,
(02:37):
and in a sense is in motionand vibration. Then all particles of
matter are in circular movement from corpussole to suns. The planets revolve around
suns, and many of them turnon their axes. The suns move around
greater central points, and these arebelieved to move around still greater and so
(02:59):
on at infinitum. The molecules ofwhich the particular kinds of matter are composed
are in a state of constant vibrationand movement around each other and against each
other. The molecules are composed ofatoms, which likewise are in a state
of constant movement and vibration. Theatoms are composed of corpuscles sometimes called electrons,
(03:23):
ions, etc. Which also arein a state of rapid motion,
revolving around each other, and whichmanifest a very rapid state and mode of
vibration. And so we see thatall forms of matter manifest vibration in accordance
with the hermetic principle of vibration. And so it is with various forms of
(03:44):
energy. Science teaches that light, heat, magnetism, and electricity are but
forms of vibratory motion, connected insome way with and probably emanating from the
ether. Science does not, asyet attempt to explain the nature of phenomena
known as cohesion, which is theprinciple of molecular attraction, nor chemical affinity,
(04:08):
which is the principle of atomic attraction, nor gravitation the greatest mystery of
the three, which is the principleof attraction, by which every particle or
mass of matter is bound to everyother particle or mass. These three forms
of energy are not as yet understoodby science. Yet the writers incline to
(04:30):
the opinion that these two are manifestationsof some form of vibratory energy, a
fact which the Hermitis have held andtaught for ages past. The universal ether,
which is postulated by science without itsnature being understood clearly, is held
by the Hermitis to be but ahigher manifestation of that which is erroneously called
(04:54):
matter, that is to say, matter at a higher degree of vibration,
and as hold by them, theethereal substance. The Hermetists teach that this
ethereal substance is of extreme tenuity andelasticity, and pervades universal space, serving
as a medium of transmission of wavesof vibratory energy, such as heat,
(05:17):
light, electricity, magnetism, etc. The teachings are that the ethereal substance
is a connecting link between the forcesof vibratory energy known as matter on the
one hand, an energy or forceon the other, and also that it
manifests a degree of vibration in rateand mode entirely its own. Scientists have
(05:41):
offered the illustration of a rapidly movingwheel top or cylinder to show the effects
of increasing rates of vibration. Theillustration supposes a wheel top or revolving cylinder
running at a low rate of speed. We will call this revolving thing the
object in the following illustration. Letus suppose the object is moving slowly.
(06:05):
It may be seen readily, butno sound of its movement reaches the ear.
The speed is gradually increased. Ina few moments, its movement becomes
so rapid that a deep growl orlow note may be heard. Then,
as the rate is increased, thenote rises one in the musical scale.
(06:26):
Then the motion, still being furtherincreased, the next highest note is distinguished,
Then, one after another, allthe notes of the musical scale appear,
rising higher and higher as the motionis increased. Finally, when the
motions have reached a certain rate, the final note perceptible to human ears is
reached, and the shrill piercing shriekdies away, and silence follows. No
(06:53):
sound is heard from the revolving object, the rate of motion being so high
that the human ear cannot register thevibrations. Then comes the perception of rising
degrees of heat. Then, afterquite a time, the eye catches a
glimpse of the object becoming a dull, dark reddish color. As the rate
(07:14):
increases, the red becomes brighter. Then, as the speed is increased,
the red melts into an orange. Then the orange melts into a yellow,
then follow successively the shades of green, blue, indigo, and finally violet.
As the rate of speed increases,Then the violet shades away and all
(07:38):
color disappears, the human eye notbeing able to register them. But there
are invisible rays emanating from the revolvingobject, the rays that are used in
photographing, and other subtle rays oflight then begin to manifest, the peculiar
rays known as the X rays, etc. As the constitution of the jet
(08:00):
changes, Electricity and magnetism are emittedwhen the appropriate rate of vibration is attained.
When the object reaches a certain rateof vibration, its molecules disintegrate and
resolve themselves. Into the original elementsor atoms. Then the atoms, following
the principle of vibration, are separatedinto the countless corpuscles of which they are
(08:24):
composed, and finally even the corpusclesdisappear, and the object may be said
to be composed of the ethereal substance. Science does not dare to follow the
illustration further, but the hermetists teachthat if the vibrations be continually increased,
the object would mount up the successivestates of manifestation, and would in turn
(08:48):
manifest the various mental stages, andthen on spirit word, until it would
finally re enter the all which isabsolute spirit. The jet, however,
would have ceased to be an objectlong before the stage of ethereal substance was
reached. But otherwise the illustration iscorrect inasmuch as it shows the effect of
(09:11):
constantly increased rates and modes of vibration. It must be remembered in the above
illustration that the stages at which theobject throws off vibrations of light, heat,
etc. Is not actually resolved intothose forms of energy which are much
higher in the scale, but simplythat it reaches a degree of vibration,
(09:35):
in which those forms of energy areliberated in a degree from the confining influences
of its molecules, atoms, andcorpuscles. As the case may be.
These forms of energy, although muchhigher in the scale than matter, are
imprisoned and confined in the material combinationsby reasons of the energies manifesting through and
(09:58):
using material form, but thus becomingentangled and confined in their creations of material
forms, and to which extent istrue of all creations, the creating force
becoming involved in its creation. Butthe hermetic teachings go much further than do
those of modern science. They teachthat all manifestation of thought, emotion,
(10:20):
reason, will or desire, orany mental state or condition are accompanied by
vibrations, a portion of which arethrown off, and which tend to affect
the minds of other persons by induction. This is the principle which produces a
phenomena of telepathy, mental influence,in other forms of the action and power
(10:43):
of mind over mind, with whichthe general public is rapidly becoming acquainted owing
to the wide dissemination of occult knowledgeby the various schools, cults, and
teachers along these lines. At thistime, every thought, emotion, or
mental state has its corresponding rate andmode of vibration, and by an effort
(11:03):
of the will of the person orof other persons, these mental states may
be reproduced, just as a musicaltone may be reproduced by causing an instrument
to vibrate at a certain rate, just as a color may be reproduced in
the same way. By a knowledgeof the principle of vibration as applied to
(11:24):
mental phenomena, one may polarize hismind at any degree he wishes, thus
gaining a perfect control over his mentalstates, moods, et cetera. In
the same way, he may affectthe minds of others, producing the desired
mental states in them. In short, he may be able to produce on
the mental plane that which science produceson the physical plane, namely, vibrations
(11:50):
at will. This power, ofcourse, may be acquired only by the
proper instruction, exercises, practice,et cetera. The science being that of
mental transmutation, one of the branchesof the hermetic art. A little reflection
on what we have said will showthe student that the principle of vibration underlies
(12:11):
the wonderful phenomena of the power manifestedby the masters and adepts who are able
to apparently set aside the laws ofnature, but who in reality are simply
using one law against another, oneprinciple against others, and who accomplish their
results by changing the vibrations of materialobjects or forms of energy, and thus
(12:35):
perform what are commonly called miracles. As one of the old Hermetic writers has
truly said, he who understands theprinciple of vibration has grasped the scepter of
power. End of Chapter nine
