is Golden Gateway. Now this isepisode each of the California series and I
hope you enjoy. I am sureA fiery hawks with a speed of light,

(00:51):
a cloud of dust, and ahaughty hio silver. A lone Ranger

(01:27):
happened. Arnold Gerson, whose wealthreached out to develop the vast resources the

(02:31):
far West, decided to strike atthe heart of the Barbary Coast. In
an effort to stamp out the viciousness. Gearson sought for and found the Lone
Ranger. This masked rider of mystery, though reluctant to leave the plains and
mountains of the Cattle Country, answeredthe call and smashed the forces of evil
in the Barbary Coast. His workin San Francisco finished, Totto and the

(02:53):
masked man headed north for the goldfields and the land of Big Timber.
Return with us. Now, outof those thrilling days of yesteryear, from
out of the past, from thethundering hoofbeats of the great horse silver alone
ranger rights again silver. Similar inthe immediate years following the great discovery of

(03:22):
gold in California, prospectors came byhorseback, wagon trains and on foot,
pushing back the wild frontiers as theyraced into the hills north and east of
San Francisco. In Plaster City Ranch, Taggart was on hand to personally supervise
the arrival of six heavily loaded freightwagons. Big and well dressed to the

(03:42):
point of luxury, Taggart looked thepart of a successful mining engineer. Why
listening, men, anybody wants towork with the California prospect and a mining
corporation? Reports of my officers, safe movie? What's wagers? What are
you pay? Ten dollars a gayfor twitching? Ten dollars just about pays
for a man's breakfast in this town, Ain't he's a dollar apiece? And

(04:06):
I'm from Kentucky. Eat a dozenfor breakfast every day. I picked ten
dollars a day. Take me drivers, get them wagons hum loading. Come
into the office. I'll sittle upwith you. Come on in, mister
Taggard, don't mind about make myselfat home in your office. Right,

(04:27):
well, listen, live and Breathewas that you took a spell fore a
letter to catch up with me,But I finally got here. What's the
trouble? No trouble yet, butI know rams Taggard lights the way,
somebody gets burned and then trouble. We forgot how to use him. Six
guns you're packing, you might geta chase during your wig You hit him

(04:49):
here, ain't I shows I ain'tforgot how so now you're remain an engineer?
Uh? What's the deal Taggard?I's noticing them wagons loaded with boxes.
I'm great mining equipment, that's right, mister him. Some of it's
the most successful kind of money.Equipment never fails to produce high grade at

(05:10):
all. Yeah, you'll see himas listening to your speech out there a
minute ago? You really figured outgetting men for ten dollars a day?
So you really think I wanted tohire some men? What goes out around
here? What kind of scheme meup to? And what are you hiring
me or rather my guns for?You find out soon enough. Meanwhile,
just keep your eyes and ears open, and I need you to let you
know listen buzz for the time being. It's just as well if nobody says

(05:35):
you're own my apperial understand p didn'tsee you. Literally, I don't care
what a coach you to live here. I'm off from ten dollars a day
for dredgers. That's it. Whatdo you want forty dollars wages too?
I suppose you ain't hiring me forten dollars a day, mister Taggert.

(05:59):
I'd like to my your proposition.Yeah, getting the proposition you get.
My name is Paul Maystead. I'vebeen in this country almost a year.
That's very interesting. I know thiscountry like a book, an over every
inch of it, and I knowwhere there's plastic gold. Mister Taggett,
what are you telling me for?Well, about two months ago, my
wife was taken very ill. Theylost her. I took every cent I

(06:24):
had to get her down to thehospital in Sacramento. I sold my outfit
and everything, and then well wecould just barely scrape ups enough to get
back to Plaster City. So nowyou're coming to me for gribstake, and
well the answer is no and nono. I tell you I know where
there's gold, rich gold crush whore. Everybody knows whether there's goal. Let's

(06:44):
go out to California picking up abusher basket. I'll give you a chance
to make a profit. You can'tlose, honest, All I need is
two or three hundred dollars. Listening, there's forty thousand prospects out here still
Brook, and all they need isa few hundred dollars for an outfit.
They all know where the goal is. Really, they can't find it.
Sorry, the answer is still known, all right. I thought you were

(07:10):
a smart mining man. Reason Icame to you. I saw those wagons
pull in. I figured you hadthe equipment to open up a real bonanza.
Y you mean you already found astrike. You mean that I haven't
found it yet. But I well, I'm reasonably sure I'm on the right
trail. You would be on theright trail until you hit the trail back

(07:31):
Eastmas didn't. And anyway, mymethods of mine in gold are a little
different from your. See all right, I won't beg you, but I
will find someone, and I'll findgold. Understand so much gold. It
will start a bigger rush than Sutterever dreamed of. Thanks, just the

(07:53):
same as attack. Yeah, that'sall right in the hey, yes,
wait wait a minute, and juststarted something. You where is this location
you're getting my h I only wantedto share it and a grub steak basis

(08:16):
not give it away? All right? You can share it with me as
support your five hund zimoleons for anoutfit. And you really you mean you'll
Oh mister are you serious? Heam, there's five hundred, Matt Pokin,
it's yours this afternoon. Will getan agreement made that it's usual thing.

(08:39):
You'll get your outfit and we'll bothright out to look over the place.
It's out an eternity foothills. Ohgolly, mister Widdle, I tell
my wife and you won't be sorryeither. Gee, somehow I knew you'd
help me out. Gosh, thanks, thanks ever so much, mister Taggett.
You will regret this partnership. It'llbring your gold, his seal,

(09:01):
bring me pretty gould me rastag it'sthe boys has got the equipped to excavate
gool pure fair equipment, gold, precious treacherous stuff, holding forth a glittering
promise to men of adventure, gold, luring men onward, ever onward to

(09:24):
wealth and power. And disaster.Over a thousand trails. Into the rugged
north country of California came the goldseekers, good men and bad infected with
the poisoned promise of sudden wealth.High up in the Trinity Hill Country,
where Mad Creek wind dis turbunte waydown to the Sacramento River, a pair
of stalwart horsemen reigned in their mouths, where the trail came close to the

(09:45):
canyon rim with an impatient toss ofhis magnificent head, Silver, the great
white stallion of the lone Ranger. We need a piercing challenge to the wild
country. I challenge that echoed andre echoed across the canyon. Steady,
steady boy, sady Silver, Silverhim look plenty good. This has been

(10:07):
a great trip. Tonno. I'msorry in a way that Dan couldn't have
come along. You've got a bigthrill out of this country, Dan,
catch plenty white man, savvy atschool. I'm on Silver, Get him
up, scout. You and Imay never see it, Tunno. One
day this country will be one ofthe richest regions in America, perhaps in

(10:28):
the whole world. Ah, theman who settle this country will only realize
that nature must be controlled, notconquered. How you mean, came a
shabby Another one can estimate the wealthof this region. Gold is only a
part of it. So are themillions of acres of virgin timberlands to the
north. Men will learn to utilizethese precious assets without destroying them. The

(10:52):
richness of this country will remain.Otherwise it will be just another case of
quick wealth for a few, quickerdisaster for many. A look ahead there,
Monday fast river. Yes, Ithought to be mad Creek. And
hello, looks like a wagon introuble. Ah in, big fraighter wagon

Wait a bit of yes, it'sit. It's just exactly the ticket from

(14:07):

What are you driving at ticket?Hey? Just to sort of reception for
the mass man. Buzz Are yousure better know what you're doing? My
friend? What a buzz that do? It's time tomorrow the Lone Ranger's going
to be swinging under a tree savvyand you and Neil have clear sailing.

(14:31):
Yes, sir, if I dosay so myself, this plan is perfect.
A curtain falls on the first actof our Lone Ranger story. Before
the next exciting scenes, please promitus to pause for just a few moments

(15:58):
now to continue our story. PaulMaystead had been craving the soft gravel bearing
earth on his claim since daylight. While the goldeness fulk had been disappointing in
quantity, Paul felt keen satisfaction atthe richness of the specimens he'd taken from
his claim. No os dusk descendedover the qunnity. The young man wearily

(16:18):
put away the rock and headed forthe crude shack where he lived. As
he entered the single, tiny room, Paul struck a match and lighted the
oil lamp on the plane board table. The yellow light flickered feebly, then
brightened as the lamp wick was turnedhigher. Oh oh, me forbid the

(16:45):
daylard comes too early this time ofyear. Boy, I could sleep for
a month. Well, I getsome beans together first. Can't swing a
cradle ol day in an empty step? Who's that a friend of you with
Paul to hide your poke? I'mnot interested in that were I've already taken

(17:07):
what you have buried and on thefloor. But mask you must be out?
What about my cash? Did you? Yes? I looked only because
I wanted to know how well yourclaim was paying out. I didn't disturb
the goal. It's still there. You're a strange kind of outlaw. Well,
I have something to tell you whatyou won't believe, at least you

(17:27):
won't want to believe. Unfortunately, what I have to say is the truth.
I still so you're wrong. I'mnot an outlaw. No, Well
that behind to prove. Wearing amask and packing two guns. Let me
ask you where did you live beforeyou came to California? In Texas?
Why? And perhaps I've identify myselfto you after all? Yeah, you

(17:49):
know what that is? Paul Asure forty five Cortridge. What about say
it's bulleted. It's made of silver, a silver bullet. That silver bullet
came from Texas too. Poe,you're trying to tell me you're you're the
lone ranger? Is that it?I want to tell you about something that

(18:12):
happened this afternoon, something you shouldknow about. What and my friend and
I had occasionally help a freighter haulingequipment across the mountains to Plaster City for
your partner, mister Taggart. Yeah, he said he had some special mining
equipment coming. I'm sure glad it'shere. You won't be glad when I
say that some of it is veryspecial equipment and let me operate beautifully for

(18:33):
mister Taggart. I'm a fred.It won't do you much good, Mayston.
Some of it. Yeah, it'sone of the boxes was dropped,
corner broken open. I saw whatwas inside. They create go on.
It was full of gambling equipment.Lett we use will layouts, chuckle games,
and well that doesn't make I don'tunderstand. I came here tonight because

(18:56):
I was suspicious of both you andTaggart. Now I know that you're on
a working this location. Evidently Taggarthas other plans what he's an engineer.
Mister, don't like what he's engineering. I listen, I'm coming a writer.
Listen Maystead and at lampdown a little. I'll stand back here in the
shadows. Just don't let on thatthere's been anyone here except yourself. Hey,

(19:18):
anybody? All? Oh? Hey, yeah, oh, come in.
You're a mister X not you, that's right, folks, call me
buzzy. You sure got it darkenough in here. I have to save
an oil. It's too expensive.Yeah, that's right. Everything costs like
fury as a claim paying out.Well, it's never mind. Only if
you got any gold laying around thischeck you'd better see it's in a safe

(19:41):
place. Yeah, yeah, orelse had in mask Combray's Lablah come along
and help herself. Mask You meanI remember Radley? You come from Texas?
Didn't you ever hear of a jasper? Call alone ranger? What about
him? He's here in the goldfields and plumb busy too cleaned out rans
tag this afternoon. Luck's stock andbarrel. I gots a dog gun broke.

(20:03):
He's offering to sell his share ofthe mind you're working. How does
he know it was a lone ranger? A dozen people saw the feller,
big man wearing a mask, totingtwo guns. He rode out of town
in a big white stadion. That'shim, isn't it. Yes, Yes,
that's him, and he's standing rightback there in the corner. Look
out. I'm knu gonna lamp overMastead. I missed him. I've heard

(20:29):
about you. Shame. Your accuracyisn't as good as your speed. Makestead.
You gotta contest. Well, thenlet's get him. He's right back
in that corner. Let him haveit now, he's over by the door.
It's five thousand dollars reward first hide, Makestead. Mister Tacker's got to
be mine in the valley looking forhim. Come on, let's smoke him
out here, player shot. Icaught him here. He is high you

(20:52):
plastic pool, that's me. Let'sgo you crazy. Just maybe it doesn't
settle your albums without any more gun, I call me. I'll kill you,
you sneak environment. You're killing dare. They're just about over Aginston.
A little light here. Shots comepast. No one hurt. Yeah,

(21:17):
gotta ope on that many time youlighted me. You said I didn't say
half what I meant to Mastead, you're certainly acting like a fool. I
wanted your goal. I'd had timeenough to God before Archison got here.
By the way, you know thisman Atchison. I've seen him around plus
the city. I don't know.I've seen him all over the Southwest and
a hundred different reward notices. He'sa killer with a price on his head.

(21:41):
I'm not mistaken. He's on Taggart'spayroll right now. But the robbery
didn't There wasn't any robbery. Andhow Taggart learned I was here. He
was at Robberty got the miners outafter me. I listened, Mastead.
I'm giving you one more chance tosave yourself. You better show some sense.
I can't figure this out at all. I don't try. I don't
know. Get that man outside onhis horse. Four of us are riding

(22:03):
into Plasca City. But miners thenplenty man, look for lone ranger.
I'll say them the trouble. Comeon, let's get at its outside.
I'm sure hit them plenty hard, deep bring horses home. Scout, you're
still friend. Aren't you afraid toride into Plasca City? Miners may not
listen to reason. That's a necessaryrisk, Maystan, Come on, get
on your horse to they definitely. Now we're going to see just what methods

(22:26):
of gold money mister Rance Taggart wasplanning to use. Come on, come
in Placa City, Rance Taggart, that succeeded in straying the miners to quite
heat groups on with every conceivable weapon. We're preparing to strike out of daylight
and scour the surrounding hills five thousanddollars in gold for the capture of the

(22:48):
mask man. Dad lay hain't gotfive thousands of this polk that belongs to
the man that brings in the loneranger. I'm more than yeah, he's
reached lightning with his guns, sodon't give him a chance to use.
Nobody's safe with him or the loose. Remember your women's folks and your kids.
I just hope I am the oneto lay my gun sets from that
fever. Your chance to tagger whenplease you sit there? I did any

(23:12):
of you men make a move untilyou hear what I have to say.
I have two men covering this crowdwith rifles. I know how to use
them. It's him. The massmatch game is up, Taggart. The
other games you had in mind wheneverI got started with what do you mean
you had a grand plan. Notsatisfied to take a chance with these men
on finding a real strike, youdecided to make one of your own.

(23:34):
He's crazy. Get the boys, get him a hold. I hate to
see innocent men get hurt on thisman's account. Got Addison Taggart him safely
out of the way. You'll talkwhen the time comes. I don't know.
Why don't you mean get the subberyme. I'm willing to listen.
There's better tell me a favor. Here's all fine. Anxious to get him?

(23:56):
You got a gun, Tagger?Yeah, thanks, old timer.
This afternoon I saw some of thegoal Paul Mastea has been taking from his
claim. That's rich, the richestkind of plaster. It hadn't come from
Mastead's location. To wait a minute, what are you saying, mask man?
Sorry to tell you this, Mastead. Those specimens I saw in your

(24:17):
cabin came from a dozen different minds. But I found that goal of my
own claim. Yes, and youfound it because Taggart put it there.
The claim was salted. You foundit, but we moved all danger for
Taggart. He was just the partnerwho grubbs stacks. If this card fund
it took Rager's food the whole. But what I say can be proved.

(24:37):
But the men in Plasters City, what about the robbery? And ye cook
clean yacht, slick as a whistle, Laggart, you're a mining engineer.
You'll have a chance to prove it. You're the cook I think you are.
We'll prove it. What about thatrobbery? Mask man, I don't
think there was any robbery. We'regoing to find out right now. You
men have a miner's court. I'mhere to give you a hands to find

(25:00):
out whether I've committed any crime andpash Or City or if there was any
crime committed. Haggart was cleaned out, as he says, where would he
get five thousand dollars for a reward? He's your people, wil boys.
Give him. You'll see who's lyingTaggart. Just as soon as you open
the safe in your office, privatekeepers in there. Another thing. You've

(25:22):
all heard how Taggart was bringing inspecial mining equipment. You men go across
the street and break open those boxes. That's private, properly keep it go
on, you'll find some mining equipment. Also a lot of crooked gambling devices.
That's how this man does his goldmining crooked gambling game. I say,
let's look how them boxing with doora light for minded to kind of

(25:47):
looking at that safe of you.Oh you hit you pressed the middle out.
I'll show you. Look how he'sgonna cut up as sleep broke my
arm. Hello, bring up thatother crook. Men can tie them up
together. Now, if you wantproof of what I've been saying, you're
looking Taggart's safe and look at hisspecial mining equipment across the street. You'll
see that the robbery, the realrobbery, was only about to begin.

(26:18):
Mining engineer, he sure was fixing. Who excavates some paydrick from us?
Fellow? No wond who was sellingthem? Claim so fast and furious that
fake robbery, I give him aperfect excuse to offer his share the Maystead
strike for sale. I seven kyotey, happen to think, I looked
all that gambling equipment clear across themountain for the low down skunk. H
I wonder how I figured to getthat in operation? The plan was simple.

(26:41):
Who simple? To be honest? You see, Taggart, having the
sympathy of the entire community, wouldhave sold his share in Maysteads so called
strike or a fancy price, andhe would have used that money to open
up a saloon and crooked gambling hall. Well, the miner's quarters meeting this
morning to take here that jasp Berner'spartner Atchison, And if you ask me,

(27:03):
the meeting ain't gonna last very long. It does one thing more,
are you man? I'll let thischeap trick of Taggarts call you to move
out of the valley. Even thoughthe goal Maystead found was platted, there's
real plashic goal in these hills, all on your claims. Keep looking.
Oh't worry. I'm sticking good foryou, Maystead. I gotta stay here,
but I want to or not.I just as well. Look here

(27:25):
is any place here before? No, No, let's get to the horses
still just cross, hey, listen, listening with it. We found more
than sixty thousand dollars and taggets safemoney he stole from us with his worthless
claims. I say, let's takethat money and start building a real town
here. We ain't getting much goldnow, but there's enough to keep us
going until somebody makes a real stride. That's the best idea yet, as

(27:49):
rans Taggart ain't gonna need no engineer, I'm a thinking we can use it
to make up for some of hisskullduggery. We'll have a school for the
kids and maybe a post office.Your dad, dumb you? How about
that? Mash Man? Hey,where's that fellow? The Lone Ranger.
