(00:00):
M. Welcome to the Old TimeRadio Westerns. I'm your host Andrew Rhines
and let's get into this episode. This episode is gonna be the Lone Ranger.
(00:20):
Original ardie is November twenty ninth, nineteen forty three, and the title
is Sign of a Broken Thumb.Let's get into it and I hope you
enjoy. I am super a fieryharsh for the speed of light, a
(00:51):
cloud of dust, and a heartyhio silver, A lone Ranger. In
(02:30):
the years following the gold Rush, many men in California rose to fabulous heights
of wealth and power. One ofthese was Arnold Gerson, who was wealth
reached out to develop the vast resourcesthe far West. Unlike the thousands of
gold seekers, adventurers, and parasiteswho sought to grab only what they could
hold in their hands, Arnold Gersonwas in the far West to stay.
(02:52):
Gearson saw the growing influx of thedisreputable element and knew that they could and
would destroy what he and others likehim had wrested. From this and of
promise, he decided to strike atthe heart the infamous Barbary Coast in an
effort to stamp out the viciousness.Gearson sought for and found the lone Ranger.
This masked rider of mystery, thoughreluctant to leave the plains and mountains
(03:14):
of the cattle country, entered thecall and soon found himself fighting a new
type of criminal in the Barbary Coast. Return with us now of those thrilling
days of yesteryear, from out ofthe past, from the thundering hoofbeats of
the great horse Silver, a loneranger rides a gatsister. Not unlike many
(03:45):
other men of the underworld, thephysical appearance of Little Pete belied his name.
He was huge in every sense ofthe word. Broad chest, thick
neck, swarthy skin, gorilla likearms, and large, powerful hands.
Little Pete was the I'm disputed aheadof Oriental slave traffic, a man who's
cunning cruelly was known and feared fromChinatown and Barbary Coast to the gold fields
(04:08):
of Somara. You over there, how not you the one behind you?
Come here? You can stop aboutand that kind of stuff, because I
don't understand it. Let me seeyour hands, your hand, don't you
dare that? Said? Hold himout in front of you. I figured
(04:30):
you was a straw boss of thiscrew. And I was right, why
did you pick this one out ofthe whole bunch, because he's a straw
bus. Rest of them will doanything, he says. How do you
know? Look at his hands?See that brand on his right hand?
Yeah, well I know how hegot on. Let me tuck to him.
Listen, John or whatever your nameis, I see hand. You
(04:56):
know, little Pete, you knowa few words of English too, So
don't place a dumb this fella here. He's your boss. His name is
Bill. He wants all of youto work fast, work, plenty fast,
chop chop, savvy dagas of youdon't. I'll go to Frisco and
tell little Pete how you're acting onthis job, You savvy little Pete,
(05:21):
don't you No, no, no, you know, tell little Pete we
were plenty fasts all day. Allright, let's say you hustle. Get
along with you? There you are, Bill, Let them coolies go,
Well, how'd you do it?Who's this little peache you? We're talking
about little pizza critter who smuggles allthese coolies in from the Orient. That's
(05:46):
who the boss bottom from. What'sthe critter's hand got to do with it.
But you see, a little Petecan't understand the word of Chinese,
and he's too lazy to learn it. He collects part of the wages of
very coolie for a year after hesmuggles him into the country. How does
that tie in with a chinaman's hand. That's what I'm telling you. Pete
always picks out one Chinese among eightor ten and makes him collect the money
every payday, and then while allthe rest of him are watching him,
(06:11):
he brands the poor critter's hand. That stune always scares the rest of the
coolies, and pitt sure to gethis money. And that's what you told
us when you were just talking. No, no, no, no.
All I did was mention little Peteand point to his hand. You saw
how it scared him. Yeah, and it worked all right. It's a
sign that never fails. Every Chinesein California scared the death a little Pete.
(06:46):
It was long past midnight in SanFrancisco, but a light still burned
in the private study of Arnold Gerson'shome high on knob Hill. Garrison was
talking to the lone ranger. I'vesaid it before, but I can't help
saying it again. You've done arich job, a splendid job, I
and every other citizen of San Franciscoyou did will never be able to pay.
You owe me nothing, mister Gerson. Surely there's something I can do
(07:09):
for you. In Tuntle, youput the fear of the Lord to the
heart of every crook on Barbary Coast, and you've landed dreg Raven in jail
labor. Your own price, asfar as Tuntle and I are concerned,
mister Gerson, never has been andthere never will be a price for helping
anyone. You're a quivering all right. There is a I mean, there
(07:29):
is one thing. What is it? A job that's still left undone.
I think that this time you'll beable to help me. Oh what do
you want me to do? Severalsources I've heard there's a big traffic in
Chinese slave labor operating here in SanFrancisco. Yes, I've heard the same
thing, but I know very littleabout it. Running into all reports,
a principal dealer, a man calledLittle Pete. He smuggles a Chinese in
(07:55):
and then sells them to mine operatorsand contactors back in the hills. Little
Peter, although No one I've talkedto has ever seen him. He's acquired
quite a reputation for a method ofkeeping the Chinese afraid of him. What
do you mean? Every so oftenhe brands one of them, brands them
asked the right hand smuggled. Chineserecognize it as a sign of his power.
(08:16):
M But what can I do?I don't know how Little Pete is
or how to reach him. Ido know what has been passed to be
a coolie auction somewhere in Chinatown tomorrowmorning. And you want to know why?
You have friends among the mine operatorsand contractors. Find out when and
where the auction will take place. All right, I'll do it, But
how will I know? Right uphere first thing in the morning, he
(08:37):
can give him the message I intendto disguise myself and attend that auction.
Well, I suppose you know whatyou're doing, But what do you hope
to accomplish? The mine operators certainlywouldn't implicate themselves by testifying in court.
How will you stop them? Byputting Little Pete where Drake Raven is in
(08:58):
jail and see you later, misterGerson HoTT of yours. M hmm,
I've never known anyone like him now, bad little Pete never has either.
(09:20):
Who's he who seem I am heremaster? But the cool is you gotta
monish your n Less than one hourhas elapsed since the final boatload of my
humble countrymen left the schooler? Good? Did you put them all down and
bunks over bottle that in? Ithas been done with all those China boys
to look good at the auction inthe morning. We some big buyers.
(09:45):
I am sure their appearance will pleaseyou. That's not the ideas how they
look to the minute of putting upthe money. It's you tell them how
we run things, that we're herein the many game with customary thoroughness.
I have explained everything. It's youtell them that when the auctions over a
lame up and I shake hands withevery fifth one I omitted. Only the
(10:07):
result to the luckless creatures who's misfortunatewill be to shake your august hand.
Yeah you know, Lucy, you'reall right. You've got to sit to
you because I retain a clean hands, my sense of humor. Yeah,
(10:28):
you've you got to admit that mysystem works puts fear in respecting those coolly
cousin's ears, and I'm sure mycommissions that your action in still fear.
I acknowledge respect. However are youdoing here? I bring a personal message
for the past week. A countrymanof yours has been large in Sacramento Street
(10:50):
jail. He desires to escape andask the assistance of August encourageous little peach
skipper at Malay who's in jail,Greg Raven Raven, So he stepped his
tone and Loop put him away.Well, I'm sorry for him, but
it's no skin off my nose.Isn't a megan That is indeed unfortunate.
(11:15):
Mister Raven mentioned a generous amount ofgold he's willing to pay. Yes,
he has getting money stairs away. They wouldn't mind having some of it.
But that's Sacramento Street jail is madeout of stone. They get soldiers,
get defnit Craig. If you willexcuse the interruption, I have suggestion abusing
(11:37):
all of them words. If you'vegot anything to say, spility. Yes,
A distant cousin of mine, hisname is Bossing Kong, was one
of the Stonemasons who helped to builda Sacramento Street jail over a ten years
ago. Yeah, what does thatmean? Bosin Kong, being a sagacious
and crafty man, may know ofmore private agree in the jail. He
(12:01):
has intimated as much to me manytimes. Yeah, we'd get him downe
here right away. It shall bedone. Raven's no particular friend of mine.
He's always worked the coast and I'vestayed up here in Chaniton. But
if he's get some good is spendfor getting out of jail? Helliam spending
him. Early the following morning, the lone Ranger removed his mask and outer
(12:28):
clothing. Then, with the helpof Toto, he disguised himself as a
typical mine operator. It was anhour later that he waited impatiently for Totto's
return from Arnold Gearson's house. Yougot the information too, huh, me
get plenty? Where's the auction? You're going to be held back a big
warehouse in DuPont Street Gearston's say youtell him you come from all of him
(12:54):
and ask no question? Good,go right up, player, Let me
find out something else. Plenty badnews that you mean to well gives so
much excited him. Say tell youGreg Raven escaped from jail last night.
Raven escaped Huh, soldiers tell policeand see Chinese hanging around jail and think
(13:15):
Greg Raven maybe hide out in Chinatown. That's the way it is. Well
too. Now we've got two reasonsfor heading for DuPont Street. Come on,
Silver, Come up, Scout.I get you out of jail,
(13:35):
Raven, not because I like youlook. Expect to get paid plenty.
You'll get it when got some gold. Hit out down Barbary Coast. I
can't go down there now with everyLoman and Frisco on the lookout for me,
that's you. You can all appeartoday if you'll keep us said well,
Marxians going on before the night.Silver, I want my money,
(13:56):
all right? What are you reachingfor? You get again swinging a host
under your coat. I'll let youout, gun Pete. I just keep
my knife there, that's all.Yeah. Let me see where do you
carry it with a point sticking toplay good? Because I can throw it
better that way faster. Yeah.Let's grab the point between my thumb and
(14:18):
first finger like this and snap it. Shit, that's pretty slicky. We
so anybody throw a knife like thatbefore the only way to do it.
I can hit the spot on aplane card at forty feet. Let's put
it in my Chinese hatchetman can do. I was looking a job looking for
me, my Boddy good. Maybewe're talking a litty right now. I'm
(14:41):
going downstairs and see how whose sceneis one of my auction? All right?
For me to stay here, keepat his sight, it would let
anybody see it. The cart andpall was on the first act of our
(15:01):
Lone Ranger story. Before the nextexciting scenes, please promit us to pause
for just a few moments now tocontinue our story. In an attempt to
(16:08):
break up the slave traffic on theBarbary Coast, the Lone Ranger and Tatto
headed for Chinatown and reined up theirhorses on the pastry. This is the
place, too, said a bigl We leave the horses here. Why
Loman not catch men who sell slavelong time ago? Because of mine operators
(16:30):
and contractors who buy Chinese cooley laborwill cooperate with the law. All they're
interested in is cheap labor. Andthe Chinese don't complain because it's the only
way they can get into this country. And what we do, Kimasabi,
I don't know, Tatto. Thefirst thing to do is look this place
over here. We are what doyou want, stranger. We're from Orville.
(16:56):
I understand that this is the placewhere we might. I guess you're
all right, go on in thanks, come on hur chance. I'm offering
and lots of five rust and cheapestlabor and teleforn you. I end up
(17:17):
five more on the platform, willsee him every chance, all sound and
window live, each one hundred, twenty years old. How much it might
be hundred dollars a man, hundreddollars, one hundred dollars. Hard to
believe that a thing like this ishappening in the all States of America.
(17:38):
Too plenty band top it is tobring the law here. Let them see
what little Peter's doing. And Ihold the chip. I don't have one
hundred and seventy five dollars a man. Now, just to show how much
I hate to see him go,I'm going to shake cays with every one
(18:00):
of these boys. I liked it. A door right across the room is
opening. Man, throw a knife. I don't know, I know where
it came from. Come on along rangement. Toddo pushed their way through
a small crowd of men who areattending Little Pete Slave auction, and reached
the half open door on the otherside of the room. This is where
the knife has thrown from toddel orsomeone at the end of the hallway.
(18:21):
Come on and wat stairs, Sowill we. But first it's giving us
a slip. Taddo. Here's anotherroom. Let's try it. Little Pete
is doing all the shoots around here. What's head? I'm one through a
knife. I had to kill youthere, my Indian friend or me?
(18:45):
Yeah, what heaven in that bigroom where you're holding the auction, I
didn't see the knife thrown. Andjust for your information, stranger, I
don't like customers in my place andgo out gild with a shooting. Then
they bring the police. And that'strue. It might and the slave auction,
there is no place for the law. You can understand that. Kids
you yes, of course you miningmen need cheap labor. That China boys
(19:08):
need to do them home. Imake both of you heapy the red.
There's a auction all over. Justto have finished silly other after night seals
starts a teentically and we'll be back. Will I hope there's no hard feeling
strange? Will you shaken? Yes, I'd like to shake hands with you.
(19:33):
I wish broke my hand. Ohhow does it feel? Come on,
let me come. Yeah, thishouse is like most of them in
Chinatown, A dozen different ways toget in or out. I don't want
to do now, Kim, ISally, go back to our camp.
Hullo. I want to get intomy own clothes again. Who you think
(19:56):
thrown name? I don't know.Raven is hiding out somewhere up here,
and he's an expert knife thrower.Maybe Raven and found her name. Little
people were there working together. We'llfind out to night Steady Silver. The
meantime, I want you to takea note, Donald Gerson, ah be
takeing, Come on, Silver, get him off his tongue. No wand
(20:22):
of the more cut up with theindiananity in jail. Anybody dumb enough to
throw a knife in front of thirtyor forty people? Spot of that Indian
out there in the room. Ididn't care how many people were around.
Who is he? Who was totallytold? Gith was William? I never
saw that credit before. But theIndian is poison. He's a sidekick of
a lone ranger alone range An't younever heard of him? You're lucky because
(20:44):
him that drooined my business down inthe coast with the lawn my trail,
run me down the hills the otherside of the bay, one rangee.
So it's like a name similar hemay live. What's he look like?
He's tall, wears a black maskand rides a white horse, and he's
grease lightening with a pair of sixguys. What's the matter here, Raven?
It's a good thing. I getyour head of that year you were
(21:07):
going completely loco. You still ain'tfrom what do you mean? A man
wearing a black mask, a whitehorse with a name lake Lone Ranger.
Don't believe it, Hopium's bad stuffmakes you see a lot of things that
eat there. You live, allright, don't believe it? But I
know I don't care how many baddreams you have. Give your head out
(21:33):
with a love fan and every interchantanlooking for Raven. It's me that's giving
you a place to hold up.I know, Pete. I'll make it
right. When you're just a saddude. Figured out who's he? I'm
here, listen to see him,Raven. Here's a friend of mine who
I have observed. He is lookingfor him, and they might stubble in
(21:56):
here. Quite true. I thinkthe best way to head it was to
changes looks. Put a different killeron his face. Shave is hidden on
one of those Chinese pig. Waita minute, I don't h the one
who's doing the head and ring. You're gonna be my new Chinese buddy.
Gay you wait here, Scott, you come right back too. Where's the

a spot of man with you, twelve of my best. You've got the
buildings surrounded. Good. My instructionsare to take orders from you. My
Indian friend and I were go inthe front door. If you hear any
shooting clothing, we'll cover all right, stranger, good come on, because

mona? All right, Loans, the coolies hold out if I run short?
Still you you make a pretty goodlooking chinnaman that kid, If you'll
sit downmember, you had not rabon. Chinese buddy Cad never argues with his
(24:48):
paws. All right, chints, give me look him over. I have
more of the strongest facts from China. Everyone's sound in wind and limb.
(25:14):
I'll take care of the door keeper. Tondo, you go on in first.
This is a private house. Whatdo you think of mask o't loss,
You haven't time to discuss that question. Go ahead, Dono, I'll
