Speaker 1 (00:03):
Calarugu Shark Media. Welcome back to the Messy Effect. I'm
Jamie Rudd and we're diving straight into Wednesday's Club World
Cup action, where the tournament continued with some fascinating results
from Groups G and H. The big story coming out
of Wednesday wasn't just the European heavyweights flexing their muscles.
(00:27):
It was how the non European teams showed they absolutely
belong on this stage. Al Hilal's dramatic draw with Real
Madrid was the perfect example of that, and we'll get
to that in just a moment. Let's start with Manchester
City's opener against wydad Ac. Phil Foden wasted no time,
opening the scoring just two minutes in to give City
(00:50):
the early advantage. Morocco's widad Ac actually did a decent
job containing City for most of the first half, but
Jeremy Doku doubled the leaded right before halftime. Pep Guardiola
brought on the big guns in the second half, Earling
Harland and Rodri both entered the game, but credit to Vaidad,
they put up a gritty defensive display that prevented City
(01:13):
from running up the score. The Citizens controlled seventy percent
of possession and outshot why Dad fourteen to eleven. But
this was far from a walkover. Now, the real drama
came in Miami at hard Rock Stadium, where Real Madrid's
new era under Zabi Alonso got off to a stuttering start.
(01:33):
Los Blancos were held to a one all draw by
Al Hilal in absolutely punishing heat. We're talking ninety two
degrees at kickoff, and listen, this wasn't just about the weather.
Real Madrid looked like well, the old Real Madrid in
a lot of ways. Federico Valverde had the chance to
win it late from the penalty spot, but his effort
(01:54):
was brilliantly saved in added time. It was another case
of Madrid's penalty woes. They failed to convert six penalties
last season between mbappe, Vensius and Bellingham, and now Valverde
can be added to that list. The positive for Madrid
came through Gonzalo Garcia, who opened the scoring after a
(02:14):
flowing move that actually started with new signing Trent Alexander
Arnold's line breaking pass that was vintage Trent the vision
the execution, but Alexander Arnold also showed his defensive vulnerabilities,
nearly getting caught out when Renan Lodi got in behind,
only to be saved by the off side flag. Al Hilal,
(02:36):
under new coach Simona Inzagi, often looked the more dangerous
side throughout the match. This was a team that came
to compete, not just make up the numbers. Their resilient
performance earned them a well deserved point and showed that
the gap between European and non European clubs might not
be as wide as some expected. The third game from
(02:57):
Wednesday saw r B Salzburg defect feet c F Patchuka
two to one in Cincinnati, and this one featured one
of the goals of the tournaments so far. Oscar Gluk
scored a spectacular twenty five yard strike, sending a defender
sliding the wrong way before bending it into the corner
of the net. After Brian Gonzalez equalized for the Mexican side,
(03:19):
kareem Onniciwo sealed the win for Salzburg in the seventy
sixth minute, putting them top of Group H. Right back
with today's previews. Now, let's look ahead to Thursday's action,
because we've got some compelling matchups across the board at
noon Eastern in East Rutherford, New Jersey, we have Palmeras
taking on al Arli in Group A. After al Lei
(03:42):
successfully nullified Messi in their opener against Into Miami, and
we'll talk more about that in a moment, they now
hope to do the same to Palmiras's eighteen year old
Chelsea bound standout Esteva. Al Arlei coach Josse Rivero didn't
hold back comparing the teenager to Messi himself, whether that's
(04:03):
motivational tactics or genuine assessment. Al Ahali showed against Miami
that they won't be intimidated by star names. The three
o'clock game in Atlanta features Into Miami against FC Porto,
and this is where things get really interesting for US.
Miami coach Javier Mascerano confirmed that Messi feels good after
(04:24):
that ninety minute performance against Al Aali and is set
to feature against Porto. The return of Jordi Alba could
also provide a major boost. The left back has been
sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury back in May against
c F Montreal, but he's returned to training this week
for Porto. This comes after a goalless draw against Palmiras
(04:47):
in their Club World Cup debut, head coach Martin an
Selmi insisted that despite being considered favorites over the MLS team,
there will be no easy games. That's the beauty of
this expanded format. Match matters in Seattle at six pm Eastern,
we have what feels like a must win match for
Atletico Madrid as they face the Seattle Sounders. After that
(05:10):
shocking four nil defeat to Paris San Jermain in their opener,
Atletico are already in a precarious position. That performance was
completely unacceptable and uncharacteristic of a Diego Simeoni team. The
midday heat in Pasadena might have been a factor, but
there'll be no such excuse Thursday evening at a cloudy
Lumen field in Seattle. The Sounders actually did well against
(05:33):
Brazilian giant's Botafogo in their opener, giving the Copa Libertadores
winners a real scare. Despite losing two to one, they
had the bulk of the scoring chances and possession, and
they'll be underdogs again against Atletico, hoping to secure a
famous win at home. The nightcap at nine pm Eastern
takes us to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where Paris
(05:56):
Sanjermin face Botafogo. What can you say PSG that hasn't
already been said? Since their Champions League triumph over Inter
back in May, the French giants have been rolling with
their young, confident squad under Luis Enrique. That four nil
demolition of Atletico Madrid was a statement of intent. Botafogo
(06:19):
are not here to make up the numbers, though they
navigated past Seattle two to one despite absorbing tons of
pressure with Egor Jesus and former Manchester United left back
Alex Tells leading the way. Still, it's hard to see
anything other than another resounding PSG victory given their current form.
But here's where we shift gears because there's another major
(06:42):
match involving American interest today. The USMNT continue their Gold
Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia at nine fifteen pm Eastern,
and this represents a chance for Mauricio Pochettino's side to
secure a spot in the knockout stage after those disappointed
friendly defeats against Turkey and Switzerland, particularly that four nil
(07:04):
demolition by the Swiss that brought fan morale to a
new low. The five nil victory over Trinidad and Tobago
in the Gold Cup opener renewed some hope three points
against Saudi Arabia would put them through to the knockout stage. Now,
Saudi Arabia are ranked fifty eighth in the world and
finished well behind Japan and Australia in their World Cup
(07:27):
qualifying group. But they're not to be taken lightly. They
haven't brought their best squad to the Gold Cup due
to Al Hilal's club World Cup participation and other players
being granted rest, but this is still a team that
can cause problems. Tyler Adams is dealing with turf tow
and missed the opener, but he's return to training and
should be available. Matt Freese started in goal after Matt
(07:50):
Turner's poor showing against Switzerland, and there's a high likelihood
we'll see the same eleven that dominated Trinidad and Tobago.
The bigger picture here is that this represents the usmnt's
final competitive environment before next Summer's World Cup on home soil.
Every match, every performance, every tactical decision from Pochettino matters
(08:13):
as they build toward that massive tournament. So there you
have it a full day of football ahead, with the
Club World Cup continuing and the USMNT looking to take
another step forward. The expanded Club World Cup is giving
us exactly what we hoped for, competitive matches, surprising results,
and proof that football's global reach continues to level the
(08:35):
playing field. Thanks for following the Messy Effect. I'm Jamie
Rudd and we'll be back with more coverage as this
tournament continues to unfold.
