Speaker 1 (00:03):
Caalaruga Shark Media. Welcome back to the Messi Effect. I'm
Jamie Rudd. On Wednesday, we saw some dominant performances and
a crucial red card that changed everything. Plus we'll touch
on the MLS All Star Team announcement featuring Leenel Messi

(00:23):
and seven USMNT players. Let's start with Borussia Dortmund, who
showed exactly why they're considered one of the tournament favorites
with a professional one zero victory over Ulsan to top
Group F. This was Dortmund at their relentless best. They
fired twenty eight shots with eleven on target, completely overwhelming

(00:45):
the South Korean side. Daniel Svenson got the crucial goal
in the thirty sixth minute with a well placed strike
that proved to be the difference. What's impressive about Dortmund's
performance is how they controlled the match from start to finish.
Juzan were already eliminated coming into this game after losses
to both Mammelodi Sundowns and Fluminensey, but Dortmund treated this

(01:08):
like a final. That's the mentality of a team that
could go deep in this tournament. Nikokovich has his side
playing with intensity and purpose, and there'll be a dangerous
opponent for whoever they face in the round of sixteen.
The other Group F match was much less eventful but
no less important for the teams involved. Fluminense held Mammelodi

(01:29):
Sundowns to a zero zero draw, and that point was
all the Brazilian side needed to secure second place in
the group behind Dortmund. It wasn't pretty, Sundown's outshot FLUMINENSEI
seven to six with three shots on target to Brazil zero,
but sometimes you don't need to be spectacular, you just
need to be effective. This result means Fluminens advance to

(01:53):
the round of sixteen with five points, while Sundowns are eliminated.
Despite showing real character throughout this tournament, Remember, Sundowns nearly
completed that incredible comeback against Dortmund, scoring two late goals
in a four to three defeat. That could have been
one of the stories of the tournament. Now let's move

(02:13):
to Group E, where we had some real drama. The
standout performance of the day came from Monterey, who absolutely
demolished Urawa Red Diamonds four to zero to surge into
the knockout rounds. This was a statement performance from the
Mexican side, who had been struggling earlier in the tournament.
Monterey were ruthless in the first half, scoring three goals

(02:36):
to put the game beyond doubt. Nelson Diossa opened the
scoring in the thirtieth minute with a powerful strike from distance,
and then German Bertame and Jesus Corona added clinical finishes
to cap off a devastating attacking display. Bertaame added another
in the closing minutes to complete the route. What's remarkable

(02:57):
about this result is how Monterey bounced back from their
earlier struggles. They had drawn with both inter Milan and
River Plate and many people were writing them off, but
they showed exactly why Mexican football demands respect at this level.
There now threw to the round of sixteen as a
dangerous attacking side that nobody will want to face. The

(03:18):
other group ematch was the real drama of the evening.
Inter Milan beat River Plate two zero, but this game
was defined by a crucial red card that changed everything.
For much of the match, inter were struggling to break
down River's defensive shape. The Argentine side were well organized
and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward. Then Lucas Martinez

(03:43):
Quata was sent off early in the second half and
everything changed. Inter finally had the space they needed and
Francesco Poesposito made them pay with a goal in the
seventy second minute. Alessandro Bastoni added another late goal to
seal the victory and send Inter through to the Round
of sixteen. This result means river Plate are eliminated, which

(04:06):
is disappointing for the Argentine side, who showed some lovely
football throughout this tournament. That seventeen year old Franco Mastantuono
gave us glimpses of his incredible talent and they'll be
back stronger. But for Inter, this was exactly what they
needed after a sluggish start to the tournament. So Groups

(04:26):
E and F are now complete and we have our
final four Round of sixteen qualifiers. Dortmund topped Group F
ahead of FLUMINENSEI, while Inter Milan and Monterey advance from
Group E. The Round of sixteen is now taking shape
and it's looking absolutely incredible. Now let's look ahead to

(04:47):
Thursday's matches, where we'll see the completion of Groups G
and H. These are two groups where the qualification picture
is already clear, but there's still plenty to play for
in terms of seeding and momentum. The afternoon match features
the big one, Juventus versus Manchester City in Orlando at
three pm Eastern. This is essentially a playoff for the

(05:09):
top spot in Group G. Both teams have already qualified
for the Round of sixteen with perfect records, so this
is all about who finishes first and potentially gets a
more favorable draw in the knockouts. This should be a
fascinating tactical battle. Juventus have been impressive throughout this tournament,
showing the kind of defensive solidity and clinical finishing that

(05:32):
made them such a force in European football. Manchester City, meanwhile,
are the defending champions and have looked ominous in their
two group stage wins. The beauty of this match is
that both teams can play with freedom. There's no pressure
because they're both through, but there's still plenty of pride
and seeding implications at stake. City will want to show

(05:55):
there's still the team to beat, while Juventus will see
this as a chance to make a statement against the
defending champions. At the same time, we have vydad Ac
taking on al Ayen in Washington, d C. Both teams
are already eliminated, so this is purely about pride and
ending the tournament on a positive note. Widad will want

(06:17):
to show they belong at this level after tough losses
to both Juventus and Manchester City, while Al A'en will
be looking for their first points of the tournament. The
evening matches in Group H are equally intriguing. Al Hilal
face Patchuka in Nashville at nine pm Eastern, and this
could be a crucial match for Al Hilal's qualification hopes.

(06:40):
They currently sit third in the group with two points
from two draws, but they're not safe yet. Patuca are
already eliminated, but they'll want to bow out with some
dignity after losing their first two matches. The other Group
H match is the Real Blockbuster RB Salzburg versus Real
Madrid in Philadelphia. This is a massive match for both teams.

(07:02):
Real Madrid are currently top of the group with four points,
but they're not guaranteed to finish first. Salzburg also have
four points and a slightly inferior goal difference, so they
need at least a draw to guarantee their spot in
the round of sixteen. This match has all the ingredients
for drama. Real Madrid will be confident after that impressive

(07:23):
three to one victory over Patchuka despite playing with ten
men for most of the match, But Salzburg have shown
they can compete with anyone and they'll be desperate to
secure their place in the knockout rounds. The mathematics in
Group H are fascinating. If Salzburg beat Real Madrid and
Al Hilal fail to win, Salzburg would top the group.

(07:45):
If Real Madrid win, they're guaranteed to finish first. If
they draw, Real Madrid top the group unless Al Hilal
win by multiple goals. There are still scenarios where all
three teams could finish on the same points, which would
make for s interesting tiebreaker calculations. Before we wrap up,
let's quickly touch on the MLS All Star team announcement.

(08:08):
Messi leads the side for the MLS All Stars, who
will face LEGA MX All Stars on July twenty third
at Q two Stadium in Austin. Seven USMNT players made
the team, including Patrick Aguimang, who we saw score that
crucial goal for the national team in the Gold Cup.
It's great to see the mix of international stars like

(08:30):
Messi and Chucky Lozano alongside homegrown American talent. The Vancouver
Whitecaps lead the way with four All Stars, which speaks
to their incredible season in MLS. This should be a
fantastic showcase for the league and a great way to
bridge the gap between the Club World Cup and the
rest of the MLS season. That's your Wednesday recap and

(08:53):
Thursday preview. Tomorrow we'll be back to break down the
final group stage matches and start previewing the knockout rounds.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
