Speaker 1 (00:03):
Calaruga Shark Media. Welcome back to the Messy Effect. I'm
Jamie Rudd and what an absolutely incredible Tuesday we had.
We witnessed one of the greatest underdog stories in Club
World Cup history, a massive upset that will be talked

(00:23):
about for years, and the completion of groups C and D.
From Auckland City's miracle moment to Chelsea finally finding their form,
Tuesday delivered everything we could have hoped for. Let's dive
right in. Let me start with what might be the
story of the entire tournament. Auckland Citi's stunning one to
one draw with Boker Juniors. This wasn't just a result,

(00:47):
This was a moment that will live forever in football folklore.
After getting hammered ten nil by Bayern Munich and six
nil by Benfica, the mostly amateur team from New Zealand,
featuring a trainee teacher, a barber, real estate agents and students,
held Diego Maradona's famous old club to a draw. Christian Gray,

(01:08):
that trainee teacher from Mount Roskill Intermediate School, rose to
meet a corner from Jerson Lagos who works as a barber,
and headed in the equalizer that sent shockwaves around the
football world. This is a team that relies on volunteers
and doesn't have much money, going up against one of
South America's most storied clubs, and they got their moment

(01:30):
of glory. The numbers tell the story of Boker's frustration
forty one shots, ten on target, but they couldn't break
down Auckland's determined defense. Nathan Garrow, who had been brilliant
throughout the tournament despite the heavy defeats, did score an
own goal in the twenty sixth minute to give Boka
the lead, but then made several crucial saves to keep

(01:52):
his team in the match. Auckland managed just three shots
with two on target, but sometimes that's all you need
when you have heart, determination and a bit of magic.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in the crowd in Nashville
to witness this remarkable moment, and you have to think
even he was moved by what he saw. After all

(02:14):
the criticism about allowing a semi professional team from Oceania
to compete at this level, Auckland City proved that football
is about more than just money and resources. Sometimes it's
about dreams, and on Tuesday night, their dreams came true.
This result means Boca Juniors are eliminated from the tournament,
which is absolutely shocking. One of Argentina's biggest clubs going

(02:38):
home after the group stage because they couldn't beat a
team of part timers. It's a reminder that in football,
anything can happen, and that's what makes this sport so beautiful. Now,
let's talk about the other major story from Tuesday, Benfica's
stunning one zero victory over Bayern Munich. This result not
only sent Benfica through to the round of sixteen, but

(02:59):
they are actually topped Group C, which nobody saw coming.
Andreas schelderup scored the only goal of the game after
thirteen minutes, finishing off a low cross from Frederick Arsnes
after capitalizing on a lapse in Byn's defense. What's remarkable
about this result is how Benfica managed to defend their
lead for nearly eighty minutes against one of the world's

(03:22):
best teams. Byron had seventy three percent possession and fired
thirteen shots with four on target, but Benfica's defense was
absolutely rock solid. Joshua Kimmick thought he had equalized in
the second half, but his effort was ruled out for
Harry Kane being off side. This victory gives Benfica their

(03:42):
first ever win over Byern Munich, and more importantly, it
means they'll face either Chelsea or Esperancet Tunis in the
round of sixteen. As group winners, byn despite finishing second,
are hardly in crisis. They'll face Group D leaders Flamengo,
which should be fascinating clash between German efficiency and Brazilian flare.

(04:04):
Speaking of Chelsea, they finally found their rhythm when it
mattered most, beating Esperance to Tunis three nil to secure
their place in the knockout rounds. After that shocking three
to one defeat to Flamengo where Nicholas Jackson got himself
sent off, Chelsea knew they couldn't afford another slip up.
They took the lead in first half stoppage time and

(04:26):
then added another goal just two minutes later. The big
story for Chelsea was Liam de Lapp getting his first
goal for the club. The thirty million pounds signing from
Ipswich Town has had to be patient for his opportunities,
but he delivered when it mattered most. Chelsea controlled this
match completely. They had so much possession that Esperance had

(04:47):
more offside calls than shots and managed zero shots on goal.
It was exactly the kind of professional, dominant performance Chelsea
needed to restore some confidence after the Flamengo di debarkal.
The final match of the evening saw LAFC bow out
of the tournament with a one to one draw against Flamengo.

(05:07):
This was heartbreaking for LAFC because they came so close
to getting their first win of the tournament. Dennis Bowanga,
the same player who missed that crucial penalty against Esperance
earlier in the tournament, finally found the back of the
net in the eighty fourth minute. For two minutes, LAFC
was celebrating what would have been a consolation victory to

(05:29):
end their disappointing campaign. But then Wallace Yan showed exactly
why Flamengo have been one of the stories of this tournament.
He flew past three defenders and scored a perfect equalizer
in the eighty sixth minute to preserve Flamengo's perfect record
in Group D. It was cruel for LAFC, but it

(05:49):
confirmed Flamengo as group winners and set up that mouth
water in clash with Bayern Munich in the round of sixteen.
So Groups C and D are now comple eight and
what a contrast in stories. In Group C we have
Benfica topping the group ahead of Bayern Munich, with Auckland
City earning a famous draw and Boker Junior's suffering a

(06:11):
shocking elimination. In Group D, Flamengo finished top ahead of Chelsea,
with Esperance de Tunis and LAFC both going home. Now
let's look ahead to Wednesday's crucial Group E and F matches,
where we'll see the final qualification spots decided. Both groups
are wide open and we're in for another day of

(06:32):
high drama. In Group F, we have two fascinating matches
that will determine who advances first. Up, Borussia Dortmund take
on Ulsan HD in Cincinnati at three pm Eastern. Dortmund
are currently leading the group after that wild four three
victory over Mammelodi Sundowns, but they're not safe yet. They

(06:53):
need at least a draw to guarantee their spot. But
Ulsan HD have shown they can compete at this level
and will be desperate for their first points of the tournament.
At the same time, we have Mamelody Sundowns facing Fluminency
in Miami Gardens. This is a crucial match for both teams.
Fluminency bounced back brilliantly from their opening draw with Dortmund

(07:15):
to beat Ulsan HD four to two, and they know
a win here could see them top the group. Sundowns meanwhile,
showed incredible character in that four to three loss to Dortmund,
scoring two late goals to nearly complete an amazing comeback.
They're not out of it yet, but they need results
to go their way. The mathematics in Group F are fascinating.

(07:38):
Dortmund are top with four points, Fluminense have three and
Sundowns have won. A Dortmund win or draw sees them through.
If Fluminency beat Sundowns and Dortmund lose, Fluminency could top
the group. There are still scenarios where Sundowns could sneak through,
but they need a lot of help. Then we move

(07:58):
to Group E for the evening matches, and this group
is even more unpredictable. The Marquee fixture sees Inter Milan
take on River Plate in Seattle at nine pm Eastern.
This is a massive match for both teams. Inter have
been underwhelming so far, managing just a draw with Monterey
and a narrow two to one win over Urrawa Red Diamonds.

(08:22):
They're a Champions League finalist who should be dominating this group,
but they've looked shaky defensively and lacking in confidence. River Plate, meanwhile,
have been one of the most exciting teams to watch.
They beat Urrawa three to one in their opener, with
seventeen year old Franco mass Stantuono showing flashes of brilliance,
but then were held to a frustrating zero zero draw

(08:45):
by Monterey. They'll be desperate to show their quality against
a big European name and secure their spot in the
knockout rounds. The other group ematch sees Urawa Red Diamonds
face Monterey in Pasadena. Morawa are essentially eliminated after losing
their first two matches, but they'll want to bow out

(09:05):
with some pride. Monterey have shown they can compete, holding
both inter and River Plate to draws, and they know
a win here could see them sneak into the round
of sixteen. Group E is so tight that multiple teams
could still advance into our top with four points, river
Plate have four points and Monterey have two If Monterey

(09:27):
beat Urrawa and River beat Inter. We could have a
three way tie that comes down to goal difference. The
permutations are endless, which makes Wednesday's matches absolutely must watch.
What makes Wednesday so compelling is that we're seeing the
unpredictability that has defined this entire tournament. We've had Botafogo
beat PSG, Flamengo shock Chelsea, Auckland City hold Boca Juniors,

(09:52):
and Benfica top a group containing Bayern Munich. Nothing is guaranteed,
and that's what makes the Club World Cup so special.
The Round of sixteen is starting to take shape and
it's looking absolutely incredible. We already know we're getting PSG
versus into Miami Palmeiras against Botafogo by and facing Flamengo

(10:13):
and Benfica taking on Chelsea. Wednesday will determine the final
four spots, and based on what we've seen so far,
expect more surprises. That's your Tuesday recap and Wednesday preview.
We're heading into the final day of group stage action
for Groups E and F, and every match matters. The
knockout rounds are just around the corner, and this tournament

(10:35):
has already exceeded all expectations for drama and unpredictability. Don't
forget to subscribe and follow us for all your Club
World Cup coverage. Tomorrow we'll be back to break down
all the Wednesday action and preview the Round of sixteen matchups.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
