Speaker 1 (00:02):
And welcome to another production here at the Open Mic
Broadcast Network. We are excited to introduce a new segment.
We're simply calling it Diamond Talk with coach Dulan, introducing
again to some and presenting to others the head baseball
(00:23):
coach for the preview A and M University Panthers coach
Daniel Dueling coach, how you doing today, sir?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. It's Friday's first day
at fifteen practice. Got our first inter squad today, so
you know, the energy, everything turns up, you know a
little bit when you get team practice. So we're excited,
really excited to get gone.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yes, sir, Well, as I said, the official kick off
from number six was October first, and got some stretching
and some angling going in. Now it's time to see
what you've gotten then. And if I'm not for mistake,
you work with a court thirty six.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Right, that's correct, that's correct.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, okay, so uh it's almost like spring training all
over again, right, that's right.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Yeah. So you go through or you go through you
know the way most people they don't know already, you know,
in our situation, inst double at this level and teams
do it differently, but for me, in this program, we
start off with installing all our fundamentals, terminology, the basics.
We do that for a few weeks. The guys get
(01:30):
to know us, we get to know them. And then
when you get to your team practice segment, okay, now
we start putting together. We started air squatting, you know,
and like I said, everything, the level kind of kind
of picks up a notch. So at that time, man,
and then the guys are excited, they're ready to go.
You know, we got the two teams going today and
tomorrow Team Burroughs versus Team Locket. So you know, okay,
(01:53):
there was some trash talking going on yesterday already with
during batting practice. So I'm excited, man, the guys excited.
We're ready to get.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Rolling, no doubt about it. Now.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
If I'm recalling yet, fourteen that remained and then twenty
two additional guys should have programmed this year, how has
that mess been coming together so far?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
It's been good, man, it's been good. You know, anything,
whenever that you've got new guys, like there's a learning
curve and honestly, like the new guys, the returners, you
take you know, a six man staff that's new to
the mix as well. Like everybody's learning everybody. So I
think the lawyers are coming together well though. You know,
(02:37):
like I said, now that we get to actually start
playing the game a little bit more and doing things
for that nature, you kind of they start to learn
more about each other as well. Okay, like you know,
I'm playing third base. Okay, we actually start playing some games, right,
I know my short so I can get to that ball,
I can kind of stay home a little bit, you
know what I'm saying, So looking forward to that piece
(02:58):
as well. There's another step in turn with the overall
team chemistry that will you know, will start being made
as well.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yes, sir, Yes, sir.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
And now do you have these little you know, getting
to know you of projects or I call them games,
or you just get in there and just let the
guys naturally take over with the common denominators of baseball,
the common denominators of Prairie View, and then actually being
new to one another.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, I understand. I don't know, that's stuff I've done
in the past, but I feel like, and I could
be wrong, but I feel like the way that we
structure things they're with each other a lot, you know,
Like I mean, you know, just as a baseball player,
you're around your teammates, and with us only having thirty
(03:45):
six guys, which I liked, it's easier to get to
know everybody, you know. I made an example. This has
been a few weeks ago, but to your point I made.
We were talking about this and I made one of
the players stand up and I had them I pointed
out from guys on the team and I asked him,
who's that guy, what's that guy's name? What's that guy's name?
And there were a couple of guys that guys didn't know.
(04:07):
And I brought that up and said, hey, man, like
we're going to be in this thing for you know,
for a while. This dugout you guys, y'all got to
get to know each other, get to know each other
off the field. And I think again that was a
few weeks ago. It's it definitely started to to know
(04:28):
who's who and who likes this out or the other.
And also just how practice is structured, you know, or
hitting groups change, defensive groups change, right, so you might
be hitting with this guy today the next day. Oh man,
I gotta learn this guy, how he likes to hit,
what he likes to do. So some of it happens
(04:48):
organically and some of it is is definitely orchestrated on
our part for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Well, one thing I was thinking about when you made
that mentioned chemistry is always good and it can kill
car you an extra mile or two.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
But respect is.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
A greater thing as well, because, let's be honest, coach,
no matter how we try to paint a pitch a
perfect world, there's gonna be some some personalities the class.
But if they can respect each other's skill set and
the comments that dominated are winning for the team, that's
almost as important as actually.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Do I like an individual, per se.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Because my coach used to tell us, well, I don't
care if you like each other. Let's just play together
and get things together so you can get what's important.
And I know that sounds through the minory, but there's
a lot of truth to that.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Would you agree, yeah, Perc.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Like I said, we're around each other a lot. You know,
I'm around these guys more than I'm around my family,
and so guys start to pick up on you know what,
angered guys, how to get under these guys's skins. You know,
like you know how to pick it somebody push their button,
yes sir, and so you know. And on the other side,
(06:02):
it helps you learn how to motivate guys like hey man,
I need you right here. Man, I need you to
make this pitch. Hey man, I need you to get
this bunt down. So absolutely, chemistry is part of the game.
Like I said, I think some of it we as
coaches can help orchestrate, but a lot of it, man,
it happens organically. These guys are in the weight room
(06:25):
with each other, on the stield BP, they're on the bus.
I mean, you know, like we take these long bus
rides to go play you know, our Corn and Jackson
and all these places. Like you've got to come up
with some stuff to do.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
You know, absolutely something a video game, right, Yeah, you
know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
We're talking with coach down.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
You're dueling right now, the head baseball coach for the
Pursview A and M University Panthers with our weekly Diamond
Talk discussions. Now, Coach, you may mentioned about fall getting
kicked off and bring to light some fans who might
not even realize that their A is a fall ball
(07:08):
and be there are some rules of engagement, Like, there's
a limited amount of games you can play that will
kind of dictate what you could do in the spring.
So if you could, if you could break us down
with what your rules are engagement, what your fall schedule
is looking like, and when some of these games.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Would be accessible, as they say, to sneak a peek in.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, so we will start scrimmage in today. Today will
be a shortened scrimmage, but typically we will scrimmage Friday, Saturday,
Sunday if possible. Now we'll go around, you know, football
schedule and whatnot, so there'll be some days where we
might play Thursday, Friday, Friday, but you know, we try
(07:55):
and play as much as we can. We'll play dates
went outside competition. We're playing Houston Christian on October seventeenth
at their place. Then we've got Alvin Junior College coming
to our place November seventh.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
So okay.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
In the fall, yeah, man, like the falls, you have
to make guys understand like, hey, this is going to
be our style of baseball, this is how we're going
to play. These are things that are important to us,
and so it's easy to get caught up in the score, right,
(08:37):
it's easy to get caught up in. Okay, yeah, man,
we just you know, these guys always had success against
these guys you know, on Team Rockett or Team Burrows,
whatever you know. And but then you have to remember,
and I've seen this happen numerous times, what you're on
the fall, don't That's what I mean. Dictate what you're
(08:58):
going to be in the spring, and he can't get
caught up and the success that you have in the
fall or you're also on the foot side, you can't
get to distraught if you don't have much successful the
fall because flag championship ain't won and October, you know
what I'm saying. And so as a coaching staff for me,
(09:20):
and we just had a meeting about this this morning,
we got to make sure we're getting these guys to
play the game the right way and do the things
that are important to us. Yes, I want guys to compete,
and I want them to play to win, but there's
a process in how you win games. That's what we
got to focus on. Offensively and defensively, you shit. And
(09:44):
so I try and break you know, the scrimmages, the
inner squads. I try and break those up like that
and just make sure we emphasize the important things as
opposed to just man, this team won five to nothing. Well, okay,
but did you play the game the right way?
Speaker 1 (10:03):
You know what I'm saying now, Coach, you had made
a mention about identifying your style of play. What is
exactly your style of play that in the midst that
you're passing on to your players.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
I want to do simple better than everybody else. Right,
at the end of the day, I want to do
simple better than everybody else. It ain't going to be pretty,
it's not going to be sexy. But if we can
do simple better than everybody else, we're going to be
all right. I firmly believe that, and so we spend
a lot of our time just on that, working on basics,
(10:39):
working on fundamentals. You know. I talk about three things
we're going to throw strikes for high level defense and
controllers on offensively, and I remind guys of that all
the time, Like, if we're going to win games, it
can be because of those three things we execute those
things at the high level.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Yes, Sue.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
So you know, in terms of like the actual style
of play, you know, like I like I like to
be physical, I like to hit. So like, you know,
you could say, okay, they plan on being a you know,
a really offensive club and this, that and the other.
(11:22):
But you know, again, no matter who we bring into
this program, those three things are going to be our focus.
I want high level strike doors. Yeah, I want high
level strike doors. We're gonna play high level defense, and
we're going to control his zone from an offensive standpoint.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Simple leave as simple does.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Right, that's it. I saw a quote on the board
and I think coach jack right football coach wrote it
in somebody's office. At least it was signed coach Jackson.
I'm assuming who wrote it, but I hadn't heard it
before and I don't remember the Jackie was worded. So
I'm putting in my words, don't revert back to the
(12:05):
basic principles, just just be basic. And I loved it.
I was like, that's that's it. Like that's kind of
been to My message from day one with our team is,
hey man, we're going to do simple better than everybody else.
The game is boring. You can't you can't. You have
(12:31):
to embrace the boring stuff. You have to embrace it,
like this ground ball that we work on daily, this
double play turn and we work on daily. This this situation.
In the case that we work on daily, that's what
the game is. And if we can embrace the boring
stuff and just be really good at the simple stuff,
(12:55):
I'll take our chances.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Well, coach, I'm gonna I'm gonna give you for free.
Today to day is your lucky day, sir. I have
a model that I've been living with for a long
time and I think it works if applied right. And
it's simply this, sir, love what you do, Simplify what
you do, and.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Master what you do.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
If you do that, you'll never lose in anything, even
if you come up short, if that makes any sense.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
If I'm loving it, you know.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
You push yourself through the adversities, through the challenges and
the changes in the difficult times. You simplify that. We
know that baseball is a muscle memory game. The more
you do it, it just becomes second nature. And when
you're mastering something, you know, people are called professional because
(13:50):
they make it look so simple when they're doing it,
because they've mastered it. And that's the core of success.
Were talking about diamond right now, but in life in general.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Soon no doubt I understand and that's I couldn't agree more.
And then I read I read a quote last night
it was like success is not because of the mysterious
or or crazy things. Again I'm putting my words, but like,
it's just the fact that you master the basics, your foundations,
(14:27):
you know, I mean, just mashing themselves. I couldn't agree
with you, Mama Hopefu. All aspects off the field, on
the field don't matter.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Absolutely. Remember you can you can quote that and say
you quoted it yourself.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
We're talking with coach Coach Dolan of the Prairie View
Adam University Panthers. Coming in was late in the season,
and we established that on the first introductual round and
with that came a little juggling act on possibly setting
up some midweek games for the fall. Well, how are
(15:01):
you coming along on that as far as fall twenty
six is concerned.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Spring twenty six.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yeah, So I was able to get everything situated. We've
got some midweek chilks with Let's see, I'm trying to
think who we got. We got Texas State, No, sorry,
We've got McNee, We've got SFA, We've got Houston Christian
(15:39):
Texas A and M. So yeah, so we've got some
We've got some people on board for sure, and uh,
schedules finalized. The only thing that I'm still working on
is opening weekend. We were supposed to play in that
Cactus Jack Classic that they've done the past few years,
(16:02):
and because of the Little Baseball Classic coming to town
that I got exed. So besides that, our schedule is
pretty pretty well set. So yeah, it's it's a good schedule.
I'm excited about it. You know, it'll be a good
test for our guys for sure, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Now with the McNeice, the Houston Christian and uh, there
was another one that you call. Are these going to
be home and homes or on the.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Road or what we'll do a home Yeah, yeah, yeah,
we'll do a home and home with s F. Ah,
we've got home and home with Houston Christian. We go
to McNeice, We've got uh, we've got a m Victoria
(16:58):
come in our place and us then it's coming on
our place early in the year, So a little bit
of a mix.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Corpus Christie, we're doing home home of Corpus Christie, I believe.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Yeah, So okay, well being in this region, it shouldn't
be hard to pick up some good mitweek competition at all.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Yeah, I like that. I definitely enjoy that, Yes, sir,
and you.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Can and and really can travel, uh not to for
our own state line man to get some some quality
deal going in, which goes back to that recruiting stage.
You know, a lot of people say that because you're
in Texas, shouldn't have no problem getting Texas ballplayers, which
is true to a degree. But every now and then
(17:50):
you'll get an insider track and some information on a
guy outside the state, or you equipped for handling the
out of state student athlete, you know, even though you
know it's a greater cost involved with it.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Yeah, I just think we have to be smart how
we go about it, you know, with us being in
a great area with so much talent right around us,
you know. And I made that clear to my staff,
like we really need to make sure that this isn't
a guy that you know, we could get in our backyard.
Let's really be specific with how we go about spending
(18:30):
out of state dollars just because yeah, I mean, yeah,
just natural recruiting stuff, like it's a little bit more
expensive when you go out of state, so let's just
use it when we need to use it.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
You know, I was always baffled at why they're not
waivers for student athletes that can come in and enhance
your program and just give them an in state status
to begin with, and that can hip a lot of
things in the wilet.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
You would think, right, yeah, no doubt. We uh it's
it's a recruiting is a game, you know what I mean,
And so we uh, we have to There's a lot
of things to go into, like obviously the money, but
(19:15):
we talk about it for us, we talk about signability
and that's kind of a pro term, but I think
it applies to us as well. Kind of what we're
talking about, Like, is this a kid that we and
he might be an estate guy, but if his signability
is high, Let's say he's a high academic guy and
he can get you know, a good academic scholarship and
(19:37):
then necessarily have to get a baseball scholarship, this signability
might be higher than an inn State guy who we've
got to give more money to because you know, it
doesn't come from anything. Maybe his grades aren't that great,
like he might need some more money. He's really talented.
So those are all things that definitely go into recruiting conversations.
(20:00):
And then, like I said it, stuff varies, but we
try and absolutely hammer and stay first.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Yes sir, yes, sir. Now with the budget this, let's
I say uh challenges. We won't say uh concern just
the budget challenges. How about do you do you recruiting?
You know some guys they go strictly internet, you know,
portal searching, and then you have to limit on when
(20:31):
you can spend money to go see a player in
action or do you trust a lot of your inner
circle word of mouth bird doll type guys.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
They have to build your program.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Well, for me, I like to we trust our eyves.
I want to go see as much as we can.
My assistant have already been killing it. I've been out
a little bit, but they've they've been on the road
killing it already.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
And so.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
You got to talk to people that that obviously comes
into play because they can give you the backstory. You know, Hey,
they away from so and so, they don't go to class,
or hey, so and so, man, he's he's a little
bit of a you know, interesting cat. Like I don't
know if it's gonna be a good mentality for you.
So you gotta talk to your people and trust what
they tell you. But at the end of the day,
(21:21):
as much as we can, obviously there's kind of film
out there nowadays, but if we get out there and
see him, see how they walk on or get on
and off to see you, how they interact with the
teammates real they look for coach in the eye and
he's talking to him, and he's getting on them. Like
all those things are important.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
And so.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
When we talk about, you know, who's the right guy
for me for our program, we try and see guys
as much as possible.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Okay, Okay, Well, coach, so you off and running.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Scrimmagers start this weekend, and you got some fall schedule
coming up, and we got some weekly conversations lined up
the head so you're looking forward today?
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Absolutely, I always love talking to baseball.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
Yeah. So you like that Diamond Talk title. I I
like it.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Yeah, it's good.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Oh okay. Then, well, with that being said, we're going
to close out for this week's segment.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Well, we want to get some closing thoughts and comments
service we'll be real to wrap this one up.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Oh no, I appreciate you having me again. And like
I said, if you start scrimmaging today, first pitch day
will be at three thirty. It'll be a shortened scrimmage.
I want to play about five innings. But tomorrow we've
got a first pitch at ten am and we'll go
on eight innings tomorrow. So definitely invite everybody people listening,
come out, check us out. You know, see what we're doing.
(22:45):
The boys have been working hard, and hey, man, like
I want people to get out and see us place,
see see how we go about it. You know, it's
a new day in the program and I want people
to be excited about Panther.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Baseball for sure. Well we're going to do our part
to help push that message out there for you. Sarah.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
