Speaker 1 (00:02):
And welcome back to another episode of After further review,
and he might have been wearing his mask, but I
think he's sling a little bit better at least this week,
as we welcome coach.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Heisch Nor the coach. How you doing today, sir.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hey man, I'm doing real good. Look. I had a
chance to go home and look, spent some time with
my family, not as much as I wanted to, especially
on my dad's side of the family, because we did
Thanksgiving at his house which is in the city of
Baton Rouge. And then lo and behold, my family goes
down to the game and you know, like I've been
(00:44):
telling people, man bad selling gonna always be good to
deecent grammar and you know, dag or pull it out
and look, I'm like I say, I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
You know.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
It was some points I got emotional at the game,
especially this towards the last quarter when Grahamy kicked the
field goal, missed it and then get the penalty on Southern.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
They get a retry miss again.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
So it was just all those you know, all the
different times that Southern had a chance to put the
game away and couldn't do it. Whether it was a
dropped interception, a ball hit a kid in the head.
You know, just all the stuff that could have gone
wrong sort of went wrong. And then it had a
defense make a play at the end of the game
(01:32):
to win it for them. And then one of the
guys there was a preseason player of the year to
come up with the funal recovery and it was just man.
Like I say, my emotion was everywhere. I say, Man,
I'm happy for the kids. I'm happy for those coaching.
Like I said, when I see them, guys, man, I
tell them, man, I appreciate what you did for my university.
Because number one is a tough thing to do. It's
(01:52):
not natural for you to run it joke. It was
almost full speeder at full speed sometime and try to
hit them or keep them from hitting you. It's not
natural for a college student, in my opinion, to go
to class or they go to practice, watch, then lift, weight, run,
you know all that type of stuff that goes into it.
Oh and by the way, we've only won one game
(02:14):
this year, and then you go out there and finish
it the way those guys ran out on the field,
you would swear to guard that next week they getting
ready to go to Jackson to play for the Tempts.
A man, it was that type of emotion. I'm just
happy for those guys, the players and the coaches and
the support staff. You know that that was real big
for me and.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
For them right right now.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Of course, the worst kept secret would be the introduction
in the hiring of Marshall Falk as the next leader.
And that's almost like a revolving door it that coaching
position in football down on the bluff, man, what's your
insights on that as you move into this new era?
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Well, I think you know, Like I said, worst kept secret. Yes,
the thing is you got to get some stability, in
my opinion, in the program, and not only in the program,
in the the underlying factors that make a program go.
(03:21):
The facilities part of it. Now you got a factor
in the nil part. You could bring a coach in
and don't you could pay that joke a million dollars
a year. But if all the other stuff is not
in order in today's landscape, I don't see how that
is going to be the big difference in your program.
(03:45):
And not only the fact that you're bringing in a
guy with in my opinion, not a lot of experience
in the coaching ranks. That's that's the thing. And I'm
like saying, I'm pulling for them, like I don't know what.
I never met the man be for. My college roommate
was friends with him because they played in the All
Star Game together, but I never met him before. But
(04:07):
I'm a pull form, like I say, I'm not gonna
change any dynamics of my support for the football program.
Like I say, within the I'm gonna say the last
ten years. You can ask any head coach at Southern
about the support that my family and myself have given
to that football program, the baseball program for that matter,
(04:29):
at a fact as well. But I'm a pull form
like never before and see how things go, and hopefully
he might be the person coming from the outside that
can say, hey, here's what we did at Colorado that
some things that coach Sanders did that we may be
able to do at Southern University. Okay, here's some of
(04:50):
my friends in New Orleans that may be able to
help us with. They just got new church, so maybe
the practicey of maybe some equipment, maybe some equipment from
the Saints in their weight room that they may not use,
or you know maybe on the way out that we
can bring the South, you know, all those different things
(05:11):
that he may be able to tap into that another
coach may not. I hope that's the thing that he
can bring aboard. And then I think once we get that,
I'm not gonna say Southern is a hard place to lose,
but in my FENI it's the hard place to lose
continually if you get the right coach in that, and
you get the right people to go out and tap
(05:32):
into the businesses of Baton Rouge. Right now, do you
know what the possible term that he would get three
five years? I know Southern has been very coined about
doing three year deals, you know, and versus five year deals.
Do you know what that's possibly lined up to be? No, sir,
(05:54):
I hadn't talked any one about the terms or parameters
of deals. I understand the way up there or to
be funded by some outside sources, but I didn't get
whether it was a three year deal a four year deal.
I'm thinking, to me, at a minimum, and this is
me talking. If I take a job at a minimum,
(06:14):
it's gonna be four it's gonna be a four to
six year day. I can't just see doing a three
year deal. But you know, now people are assuming that
you ought to be able to get it turned around
in a short amount of time. But in my opinion,
in order to get it turned around in a short
amount of time, you have to have an infrastructure to
do it. And that's why I say what happened at Praierview.
(06:37):
You had the right infrastructure in order for coach Jackson
to come and be able, and then they added to
what they already had. That's another key thing.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
You know.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
It's like they say, hey man, all the poker tips
are in off the table, and we're going all end
on making sure that football is successful. And at some schools,
I think they want to be successful, but they're not
doing what it takes to be successful.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Now, of course, you just struck my curiosity when you
make the statement the salary is way up there. I
know you're not the official spotsman. Well what do you
call them?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Way up there?
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Above four hundred? Wow? Wow? Man? And from and like
and I'm gonna tell you this, and I maybe I
shouldn't say this, Like my mama said, somebody looked like
me said.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
It, So take it with a grain of salt. But
I understand this.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
It's a good bit above four hundred and I've heard
as much as see something. But you know, like that,
I said.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Okay, and if that is the case, If that is
the case, and this is all speculation, this is not official.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
So I don't nobody saying I heard somebody.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
I heard God, Nordon and Mike.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Talking about that.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
I'm doing like you said, I'm just telling you what
I heard. I'm not gonna say it's official. I can
probably make them bomb call and there you can. I
know you can, but we're not gonna put you out
there like that. We're not gonna put you out there
like that.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
But now here's the dynamics of that, coach, here's the
dynamics of that. You just made a couple of key
points about the infrastructure, then about being aligned there, and
I know that's an outside group that's fronting the bulk
of that. I'm assuming that, how do you keep that up?
(08:30):
How do you maintain that?
Speaker 3 (08:33):
You better get it in the right And that's all
I'm gonna say. So that's that's some of the key things.
And you know, sometimes I look at it like why
you didn't do that for some of the previous guys.
But I understand the dynamics of it as well. And
you know, some people look at it like the person
that's making the high may look like this my guy,
(08:54):
So I got to make sure that my guy is
successful more than the last guy. So it's you know,
sometimes you can get involved in that, but the biggest
thing is making sure that if somebody commits to something,
making sure that they can live up to their commitment
or get the money upfront from the commitments, and then
(09:14):
you can set that money and while that X amount
of funding you can make money off the entrant, you
can do some investments to make sure that that money
is still in place upfront and law and behold, that
money that you set aside can still be making money
while it's you know, waiting to be used more or less.
So it's gonna be some interesting dynamics at Plague when
(09:37):
you talk about the funding, the support staff funding, the
funding for summer school. You know, all those dynamics now
almost have to be built into the head coach's contract
because and nowadays, when you have that transfer port, if
your kids not in summer school, you're gonna be trying
(09:58):
to put together a team and it's still discipline installed
playbooks in training camp, where most of that stuff now
is being done over the summer more so. And like
coach Jackson said, he went from he had a team
in the spring, he had a team in the summer.
The team in the summer is not the same team
(10:20):
as the fault. So that's the way football is evolving.
On the collegiate level. The summer is almost more important
than training camp, depending on I say, where you are
in your summer school budget.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Right when you were talking about those dynamics. In the
case of coach Jackson, he had some let's say, some
gravy poured on his contract with getting extra resources in
the staffing area, but not all the eggs were just
in his basket. It was in a support basket. And
(10:55):
that's where I'm scratching my head. If the numbers that
you're indicating are true on how Southern couldn't maintain that,
then I could see maybe the first year of excitement,
the honeymoon phase for years two, three and beyond. Man,
that that can become pretty pretty tight, even though there's
a strong fan base and support, but you know, it
(11:19):
remains to be seen. So you know, congratulations a good
Thanksgiving weekend for you, but not so much.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
But a fam you rattlers, man, they.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Man, you know what? You know what I told so
Adam and I were talking about sort of what happened
is seen, and this is one of the things that
a coach that to me, what happened.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
Fam Let Bethune beat them twice.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Number one, you lose to your rival the way you
lost to them, and then you come back and have
to go on the road to missis Valley. I bet
if they would have taken a poll, those guys that
fan would have if they would have voted on do
we want to play this game or not, probably sixty
percent would have said no if they were being honest
(12:14):
with themselves. And that's why I think happened. You know,
they they went down there to play, up there to play,
and then you know they started playing as the closed game.
But you know how committed to were they to focusing
in on beating Mississippi Valley the whole game. That's why
I say, but don't beat Sam twice because you lose
(12:36):
the way they lost to your rival late in the game,
and just that emotion can take something knot out of it.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
And I don't think people realize.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
How much emotion carried over from one week to the next.
You're not where you want to be, and it takes
a special joker to get up off the match the
following week knowing that it's your last time putting cleats
and shoulder pass on for some of.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Those guys, right, And I was on record for stating
that when that game was shifted from October fourth to
November twenty ninth, I said, Oh, that's gonna be a
problem because especially with fam literally not having anything to
play for and them not accustomed to being in that
particular position. Now to the coaching aspect of it, is
(13:24):
that hard of why you have a head coach to
be a head coach to motivate for such a time
as this, And does that say anything to the future.
I know this is a sensitive area for you being
a coach and everything, but it's a reality that's being
out there right now.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah, Cozy does have a new ad coming in. They
were teammates.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
But one thing about teammates that people don't understand where
they're on the same side of the ball, Because just
because he's on the same thing, don't mean we were
teammates if you can read between the lines on that.
Because you're gonna have your offensive teammates and you're gonna
have your your defensive teammates, then you're gonna have your
(14:06):
roommate teammates.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
So there's some layers and tears.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Is this enough for Cozy to be concerned about his
job security?
Speaker 3 (14:17):
I would definitely have to think so. The thing about
it that when.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
You talk about it, I look at sometimes you know,
we are fathers, and I'm pretty sure at times you
can warn your.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Son about the dynamic the dynamics of either one of
their friends or on serve that you see them with.
They're like, hey, man, that might not be a good
choice for you, But sometimes you have to let them
live with their choice. And it's almost the same way
with you try to get your team to understand the
(14:52):
dynamics of all right, you've been knocked down on the
mat and you may have been fired. I'm a job.
This is what I would always relate something losing a
game to you done got knocked down.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
At the job, You didn't get to promote.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
You on it. You may have gotten fired and now
you still have bills. Do how do you navigate that?
Getting up off the mat, figuring out a way to
make yourself a winner in a short period of time.
That's and you know, that's what I would always say
when we lost the game, and I said, I have
guys that walk up to me now like coach, I
see what you were saying. I just was talking to
(15:29):
my wife about a young man. I'm not gonna say
his name, but and he will tell you, like Coach,
I was a knucklehead. I should have listened to you.
This man I made one year, I didn't let him play.
I made him go to study hall. This young man
now has his own business, and I so happened to
be able to hear him on the phone talking business
(15:53):
to someone, and I just had to tell a dude like, man,
I am impressed with the way you handle your business.
He say, Coach, I handle business like that because some
of the things that you guys, you in particular, made
me do. He say, Man, I learned so much by
not playing football. They is not to take it for granted.
I learned so much about being away and getting up
(16:16):
off the mat. When I went through my divorce, or
when I went through not being able to see my
kids for a while, having the provide them, you know,
all those providing things. How football is a correlation to
direct correlation to how you handle things in life. So
that would be always be my selling point. Getting up
(16:36):
off the mat, biting down on your mouthpiece. Sometimes you
got to tighten your shoulder, pass traps and still get
out there.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Even when you don't want to.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
And I would tell people this, man, nobody cares at
the end of the day. You know, I told people,
you know, I talked about the APR penelty that we had.
Nobody cared about that at the end of the day.
All people care about it wins and loose. At the
end of the day. All your kids care about is
maybe sometime being able to hug you or see you,
or you being able to say, here goes some food
(17:08):
for the table tonight. That's that's what's the most important.
Then sometimes, like I said, sometimes you might not You
might provide the food and not be able to eat it,
but get you. So that's what I always told people,
on the fact of making the next play, no matter
what's going on in life right right.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
And on the flip side of that coin, you got
Coach Buckley scratching and claws all season long and call
it what you want to call it. It was free admission,
but they said it might have been fifty people at
the game. Coach and I still got to check to
see what the official attendance was reported. But I that's
a whole nother story. But then for the energy and
(17:52):
the excitement of winning that one conference game, as if
you just want the East or just wanted to squack,
how they rushed the field, and even if there was
no one there, if it was a glorified scrimmish game,
those guys in the trenches throughout the dog days of summer,
(18:13):
throughout the long nights, the empty nights, people are not supporting,
ridiculing you, and they said, man, this is.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Why we did it.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
How do you feel that coach is feeling not after
the game, but on this day, a couple of hours,
a few hours after the fact. What's the next move?
Right now?
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Man, you gotta be thinking, man, this sent us into
the offseason the right way. And then maybe some of
those guys that may have been disgruntled in the background
or not putting they all in, can now see that, hey, man,
when we played the game the right way and do
the small things right, we have a chance to win here,
(18:56):
despite the fact that we don't have the scholarship, despite
the fact don't have the best await on, you know,
all that type of stuff. That's you know, it goes
back to almost the same thing that I was saying.
It was just keep on getting up off the mat.
And I had to say and keep flicking that jab
by this, just keep on jabb and just don't get
knocked out as sooner or ladies, you're gonna win. But
that's that's you. I'm pretty sure at the end of
(19:18):
that game, man, the juggle was running around with the
number one in the ABB like they and you know,
and it's funny to me because I've seen it, guys
running around with the number one up and they may
be their only win of the season.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
Look coach, yes, sir, but look, hey, the one win.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
So I ran into a guy I had on the
Southern Football shirts and the guy was about the same
age me like, hey, man, when did you play a
suth So I said, ninety one through ninety fives. Oh, man,
I played at Nickel State. He said, no, one year
we win. I want to say eleven and one. They
went one in eleven and we was there one, so
(19:59):
he was like he always dopes with people about they
were the squack champs that year and not, so you know,
and you know, it's one of those things that you
talk about as players. But it's a good thing to
be able to beness own that winning note going into
the off season is a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
I tell you that, Yes, sir, yes, sir, we're talking
with coach heist Northern on after further review, kind of
reflecting on the weekend it was.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
But now we.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Got the beast of the elephant in the room coach
championship week, you got Jackson preparing to host Prairie View.
And you know what, I've been giving you a pass
pretty much all season because I don't tell you to
pick them. I don't tell you to pick them, and
I'm not going to tell you to pick them today.
And I think you and I have a good enough
(20:51):
relationship and a forward, straightforward relationship. You know that I
say what I mean and I mean what I say,
And yeah, I'm a fan Prairie View. I'm a supporter,
you know, and I do things without saying things because
it's not about me.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
It's about the program. It's about the University.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
But I honestly in my heart, you don't have to
agree one way or the other, coach, but I really
believe that Prairieview has a better chance of winning this
week against Jackson State. But before we get into all
of that, what are you seeing about this matchup and
what's going to be some key dynamics for both squads?
Speaker 3 (21:35):
So you know, I went into this week since since
I got back home from the Bayou Classic, I've been
looking at some Jackson State gains from early in the
season to see what do I see that Praierview either
needs to look out for on offensive defense and what
(21:58):
are some keys that may tip this is what Jackson
is going to do. Now, I tell you this. On
Jackson's offense, like most teams, you can follow the motion
man to the football. Jackson you can't do that because
they'll give you some eye candy that you have to
watch out for, the speed tweets and all that.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Type of stuff. But they have counters.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
Off of the ball, following most I think that's one
thing that they do well. The other thing that I
think on Jackson's offense, their receivers are better than most
people give them credit for. Because they also run game oriented.
(22:45):
They do have some pretty good receivers over there. Jackson's defense,
who I think the two best defensive players in the
conference probably gonna be playing in this game. I think
Randall from Praierview is one of the best defensive players
in the country. And Comfort, oh man, I can't. I
(23:07):
want to say the big line back from Jackson, number
one is probably one of the better d And he's
a big old man. You know, he just looked like
he just wake up and play football and.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Don't do nothing else.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
You know, he not in the best shape, He's not
gonna have a six pack. But when they when then
when lights come on, he's a football playing just so.
But I think Jackson lines up in what most people
call a double eagle or bathront. If prayer View can
take advantage of that front in the run game all
the pass the game. Because they only to me play cover,
(23:44):
want to cover zero out of it, Prayerview can take
advantage of it.
Speaker 4 (23:49):
Especially if they, you know, run their little.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Rub route what I call rub route series. But I
just think it's gonna be a good game. But I
think Prairiview is gonna be able to run the ball.
I think they're gonna be able to pass the ball.
The question, I think the big thing is the special
team's aspect, because Jackson got some special jokers back there
(24:12):
running back kicks and punts for them. That's gonna be
one of the keys to the game as well as
is Jackson going to be able to run the ball
because the way Prairiview's defense, like say, most of your
A gap runs are gonna be canceled. And then also
can pray View get some pressure with their three man
(24:34):
front as opposed to having to bring pressure with a
fifth guy more that they I think they can definitely
get there with four, But if you have to bring five,
then that may play into Jackson's favor, especially with remember
remember he finds face.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
He's not sort of.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
Hello, yes sir.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Yeah, He'll start to remind some Prairieview people of ay
maybe even a faster version of a guy like a
Weed or Shun Stevens. But he is very small. But
that joker can fly and he gets the full speed
in the earth and he just finds spot in the zone.
He's a hand catcher. So most of the time when
(25:19):
you have a guy that's a hand catcher. They catch
in turn body catchers, so the catch have to get
set and turn much slower than hand hand cats the
catch and go. So you know he's a special wide
receiver that if they not careful in the zone stuff,
he can cause problems.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Mm hm.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Now when you when you look at peri Review side, hello, yes, sir, okay,
I don't know if we lost it or not. When
you look at periview side, uh.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Huh So yes, sir, so I'm seeing Prayerview is gonna
run the ball. The question that probably is gonna come
for me is can they take advantage of Jackson pressure
which people you know, both teams have better receivers than
(26:18):
you think. In my opinions, Prayer Review doesn't have the
I'm not gonna say the big guy like like a savage,
but that you know we had we had them, coach,
but I know, look and you know he hadn't done
much there to be honest with you, But I'm just
talking about the physical stature of a kid that side.
(26:39):
But I think they have a great dynamic group of
five ten to six one guys that can make plays,
and they can make plays in the speed speak games
for their offense and they can take some shortcatches and
turn thement along longer passes for the quarterback. So I
think that's what what the thing is with Praiviews receivers.
(27:04):
The running back room speaks for usself. They got three
good running backs. Jackson has two. In my opinion. The
quarterback play is, you know, has been up and down
for both teams. Came has been hot lately. I think
the thing if Jackson goes back to Morgan, which people say, oh,
we're just gonna bring Morgan back in. Man, the speed
(27:25):
of the game is gonna be so different from for
that kid. Oh and by the way, he hadn't played
against the defense like Prairiview. You know, it's different, and
you play against a three to four or four three
or four two five. This is something that their kid
has not seen. And I think that's an advantage that
(27:46):
Prairieview is going to happen. Like, yeah, they had two
weeks to prepare, but man, this, you know, it's like
preparing for wings. He the option football. You got to
see it.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
Over and over and over again in order for you
to make some good decisions against that defense.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
Right well, speaking of defenses, you made mention about the
bear defense that Jackson presents. That's a rare look, and
what would privi you have to do and explain what
the bear when you do go into the bear description
for those who might want to get a little bit
in depth on the football like you.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Okay, So the bare defense to me and most other
people when you explaining bear is you have a nose
guard that's head up over the center, and most people
play their baar defense with two three techniques. That mean
the outside shoulder of the guard on both sides of
the line on the offensive line has somebody into what
(28:42):
we call a B gap. Now, what they will do
they'll bring two linebackers off the edge, so that means
the tackle will have somebody rushing on both sides. So
to me, that's what most people call bear or some
people call it double eagle. That means when when people
say ego, that means one end in a three four
(29:04):
has now went to the three technique or a begap.
So when Jackson does their bear front, nine times out
of ten they gonna blitz. They gonna bring five guys
out of Some people lineup in bare and play some
zone behind it, but most of the time when they
play bear they bringing pressure to the quarterback. So it
might be some stunts and you know all that type
(29:26):
of stuff. But that's when I say that bathront, you
gotta make them pay for getting in the bathroom, whether
you run a screen, whether you get somebody one on
one with a safety. That's where I say, I think
Prairier you can win because they have a variety of receivers.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
You know, Ojo might get hot. You know you can get.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
The ball to one of your backside of the backfield.
Against that bathront, once you find out they playing bear man,
you can run so many picks and rubs or make
them have to run through people to get they guy.
You're gonna have somebody running wide open. So that's why
I say you gotta make them pay for getting in
the bath front. But you can make them pay in
(30:08):
the run game too. If you can pull somebody, I
think that's gonna be the key prayer. If you can
pull and get a kick out man, you can. Most
people don't think to run against the bad but if
you can, it's gonna be a lot of room. If
you can get to the second level.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Well, coach, I'm over here with a huge grin on
my face as you were breaking down the bare aspect,
I understood it. But to simplify for those who might
be a relic like myself, that ain't nothing, y'all.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
But the old five to two which.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
That yeah, which they start calling a three four. But
you're the expert, you're the guru, So it sounds better
when you said versus when I said. Because I'm just
a guy with a microphone, you got what I'm saying.
So that's why that's why I was smiling and reflecting
on and uh, you are you are? That is a
run stop first set. But from my understanding, when they
(31:03):
start transitioning from the five too to the three four,
instead of having your no, I mean not your defensive
end with his hands in the ground in the three position,
he starts standing up. And then they went from outside
linebacker to defensive end to now what they calling him now.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Your ed rushing. So I'm like, okay, whatever, it's still football.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
I was talking to my son, I said, son, I
don't care if it's nineteen seventy five, ninety five, two
thousand and five, or twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
It's still football.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
And they could come up with different names, different characters,
different skin. Is still football, and no matter how you
do it, it's about execution. And that's what it's going
to boil down to this week from Jackson, Mississippi. Now
you went through the dynamics of what you see and
(31:58):
what it is, and I'm on for saying this, and
I'm not gonna stay in this lane long.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
With the attendance thing.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
We know it's gonna be standing room only, and yes,
it's probably gonna be some TV representation, But I really
believe that Perrieview, it's built for road travel, for for
road games, and I think they can use that as
fuel this weekend.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Yeah, I think they gonna enjoy the environment.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
Like I say, man, I watched some of the Jackson
versus All Con game and.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
You can see, you know, because of the location and
how close those schools are to each other. But man,
if I'm a Prairie View fan, I might just take
the trip just.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
To enjoy the environing and the back and forthness.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
You know, Jackson is not a bad place to tailgate,
to be honest with you, but it's not I wanna say,
it's not in the best location, but once you get there,
around the people. They actually free nice, nicer than you
would think they were.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
You know.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
I say this coming from a guy that went to
Southern and coach that Grammlin for the longest. Uh. You know,
and I may have to at times when I didn't
have to. I may have on the Grammar shirt as
I'm walking through go and see my people, or you know,
just different dynamics like that. It is a good place
to play and watch a football game. And it's you
know it. And since they made the upgrades to the
(33:28):
you know, the fans don't see this part of the
locker room and the and the fieldhouse portion of the seat.
The oldest on over what probably need a good pressure washing.
But the video board is nice. Uh, it's not a
bad sight line. The only thing is is it's a bowl.
And you know, from what I understand, the weather is
(33:48):
gonna be decent. It's gonna be cool. It ain't gonna
be cold and raining like it was the last time.
And look, Avam Adam and I were talking about, you
know what he remembers from the game the last time
Prairie played. He pretty much said, you know, he just
remember being cold and wet.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Yes, sir, he was actually there.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
With a snowsuit on that my dad had got for him,
and he said he remember coming down on the game
and then he you know, he remembers after the game,
the band and the football team from Prairie both end
up in the same restaurant. So it was almost like
a big party and it took forever to eat, but
it was a real environment being in. I think it
(34:32):
might have been Rhymes or somewhere Golden Krab.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
That we ended up there.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
So it was good just from that standpoint.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
But yes, sir, Now, look, you know when you get older, coach,
you start paying attention to the weather.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
Oh yeah, you have a rejection.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
For Saturday's supposed to be a high fifty four and
a lower forty one, so it's going to be as
they call perfect football weather.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Yeah, it's supposed to.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Rain at Thursday, but by the time game time is
going to be sunny but cool, and it should be
a great atmosphere for the game. Now, once again, because
I told you, I wasn't gonna put you on direct
hot seat, but I'm gonna ask you for a score.
I don't want to know who scores what, but I
want to know what you see in the final score
(35:15):
being sir.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
It's somebody gonna be in the thirties and somebody gonna
be in the team. It's not gonna be I don't
think it's gonna be a close game, to be honest.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
With you, Wow wow Dare I pushed the envelope or
should we keep the listeners in suspense?
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Now?
Speaker 4 (35:31):
I'm gonna leave it there.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
I think, Look, because I think it's gonna be so
momentum based. I really think that. I'm thinking, you know,
somewhere in the fourteen to thirty five, thirty to thirty
to fifteen a teen, somewhere along those lankers one. I
(35:56):
really think one team is gonna struggle with the run
game and the special teams. I think may be the
big key to a block punt, a kickoff return or
something like that. But I think one team gonna struggle
and I can't. But I just for some reason, I
(36:16):
don't see it being seven or ten point.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
I see twenty points of you know, somewhere in that
range where at you know, midway the fourth quarter, reality
gonna sit in for somebody.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Man, we don't have a chance.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Okay, Well, I'm on record for saying I believe Prairie's
gonna win in a close battle twenty one to seventeen.
That's my call, you know, but the call is going
to be made on the field, regardless what Coach Norton
has to say or what Mike Prince has to say,
They'll say it on the field. December sixth, one pm
Central Time. And yes you can listen line right here
(36:51):
at the Uppen Night Broadcast Network will be in position
lockloaded and ready to go. And with that being said, Coach,
I want to give you some closing thoughts and comments as.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
We get ready to wrap up this week's segment.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Sir, Look, man, I'm just looking forward to being in
that environment after being in New Orleans with it it
was it was still a good game. Like say, me
having worked at Granted for nine years and seeing some
of my former players at grantled with they kids and wives,
(37:27):
and then seeing some of the I mean, you know,
you know what I thought about too, as I'm walking
around the dome with my daughter, who made me walk
around the whole dome. He didn't go to the upper
level seeing some of the former Grants, and man, I
didn't realize like how big some of these guys were
(37:49):
I mean it was it was almost like a monster's movie. Like, man,
this kid was six sick, you know, two forty playing
defensive end or something at Grandmar or the city, seven
three hundred pounds joker playing offensive tact Like how big
we really were.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
And even the guys.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
Before me that you may earn the ladd and all
them guys were small. But it was just the family
reunion of being able to, like say, seeing hug guys.
Then I saw one of my teammates that I hadn't
seen since we played together. This is no loude might.
When this guy played for us, we never gave up
(38:27):
a score while he was in the game. Now, if
he went out the game, we may have gave up
some points. But he got hurt my junior year, and
I think we lost four games that he missed due
to injury. And then he came back, and I want
to say we may have almost we may have shut out. No,
they scored late in the game, but he wasn't then
(38:47):
when they scored when we played Grammars my junior year,
but he was a dynamic player. Then I saw a
guy that was my teammate at Southern. He transferred to Grammar.
He end up being outstart quarterback at Graham, so I
had a chance to see him, and I had just
talked about like he's an underrated guy. You know, he
(39:07):
may have had like thirty one touchdowns five interceptions while
being a starting quarterback at Grammar. So it was like,
you know, a big family reunion. Now I'm looking forward
to another one because I know some of the PV
people and I want to mess with someone them, Like, look,
if you hadn't been to a preview football game all seasons,
don't be posting on was it Instagram and Facebook? Oh
(39:31):
we the West champs now? And you ain't been into
a game or made no donations. But I'm looking forward
to seeing jokers. I think what I'm gonna do. I
think I'm gonna make a turnaround trip. I was gonna
go and stay overnight, but I think it's gonna end
up being a turnaround trip for me. But I'm just
looking forward to getting there early. You know, coach Asberry
is calling the game for Jackson's stake, So yeah, y'all
(39:53):
go back in the long ways too. Man, Look we
go back to the two street. We lived two streets
from each other growing up so I'll go, you know,
probably tailgate with him and let him introduce me to
you know, some of the pigs beat sandwiches.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
And all that take ft up. But I'm gonna have
a first of.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Time, and I'm just looking forward to walking around and seeing,
like I said, some of my former players, some of
the former Prayer View fans and funny thing, and I
know them all over the place. But man, I was
in I want to say, I was in academy at
HB somewhere in front of the neighborhood and a guy say, hey, Coach.
(40:32):
He said, Man, I just listen to you and Mike
Prince while I was driving, So you know, like you say,
you know, it's just funny sort of running into people
at different places, you know, sort of tell you know.
And everybody wanted me to get back and coaching. Nine
times out of ten. If everything works out, I'm gonna
be on the sideline somewhere. Hopefully it'll be on in
the collegiate rings. But it's you know, even if I
(40:54):
take a good high school job, I'm gonna I'm gonna
give them all I got while I'm there.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Well, who knows, Man, it might be a return to
the DAGs with Marsh and frot As said, I don't know, man,
I don't know. Well, look, coach, will you still at
least take my call.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
I'm gonna take your call if I get a college out,
I guarantee that.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
Well, coach, we're looking forward to whatever your future is
going to be.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Always been a long time friend and we support it. Uh,
since I've known you, I don't even start counting the
years no more, man, then I start aging myself. But
it's it's a joy. I appreciate you to the utmost,
respect your views and your opinions.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Everything.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Either if we agree to disagree, we still have a
way to make that magic work and that's what it's
all about. And just want to say thank you again.
