Speaker 1 (00:02):
And welcome back to the locker room. It's time for
us to get with the Guru himself, Coach Van Petaway.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Coach, how you doing today, sir?
Speaker 3 (00:12):
I'm doing great, sir. This is another great day that
He's given all of us. And I think all of
us have recuperated from UH that Thanksgiving feast and I'm
looking forward to the championship Saturday.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Well, well four days away, coach, Yes, sir, four days away.
And now there was a fourth UH a twelve day Christmas.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Theme song.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
And UH and on the fourth UH or, I guess
I don't know, and I'm not gonna sing a song
on the spot. I don't wanna embarrass myself, but I
have to think of some off the gears and it it.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
It's a lot going on, but there's.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Also some some big moves being made in the conference.
UH Southern the nouns and introduced their ladies coach her
twenty second head football coach at the Bluff, mister Marshall Fall.
They laid out the red carpet, Sir, Neelius williams Avery Johnson,
(01:11):
the mayor came in town. It was a big to do, sir,
What are you thinking about that?
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Well, I guess Southern has proven that or it's trying
to prove to the world that celebrity high is the
way to go. Well, you know, Marshall Faulk great football
player and is all right, h but the head coaching
experience uh what coaching experience period? Uh A little bit short.
(01:42):
But I guess Southern has seen something that none of us,
none of the rest of us have seen.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, when my brother and I were younger, we used
to play this game called Get Like Me, and basically
you had to mimic each other, almost like old.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Simon said old Gang. He Simon says, hey, you be people.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
People put the little d little gang and you know
they they said, well, maybe we can catch Dion in
a bottle two point oh style this time on the bluff.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
I don't I don't know, happy for him. I hope
it works out. Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I've been very uh, let's say, uh, studious on the
press conference that I heard, and I've listened it a
couple of times, and there was some to me, some
hidden messages in between. And my m brother Falk is
talking about I promise you you're gonna get a good return
(02:46):
on your investment.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Mm.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
And when I hear those type of terms and hearing
the numbers that are associated with what's a LEDs to
be in his tape just for him, not his staff,
between four hundred and six hundred thousand dollars a year, coach.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
What's your answer to that, Well.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
That that's a great investment for hbc U. Uh, that
is a awesome investment on the on the guy who's
had no previous coach head coaching experience. So hey better
be getting something on their investment, because I think if
it does not work, I guarantee you some some large
(03:31):
heads are gonna roll on this one if.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
It will not work out.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Well, if you look at it, it's been a bit
of a muck for football since H. Dodeum, since Awsome
let mean lost, I mean I'm all confused since mister Oldham,
since left.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Baton Rouge. Uh. They hadn't been able to quite get
things right man.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Right. That has been a big issue for the Southern Nights.
And I guess they figure, uh, well, it's nine, it's
time for us to swing for the fences and it's
gonna for a home run because what we've been doing, Uh,
we've been sacrificing and and and uh we we we've
been bunting and and we haven't gone for the big
(04:19):
hit yet. So now they're swinging for the fences and
this is their swinging and they're hoping that this home
run high will get him over the hump. But I
think it's gonna take more than just a name coach
coming in there. I understand that not only will he
get the salary, but he plans to put together this
(04:41):
awesome staff along with its facility upgrades that has been
on a drawing board for quite some time for Southern,
So I think he had some assistance. I think with
the fact that he's been on Dion staff. He was
on Dion's staff. Uh. Dion has been a part of
the swack, so he knew about some of the things
(05:05):
that were going on in Southern, so he was able
to give him some good advice put some things in
that contract that they think will help guarantee success. Because
they tell me that Southern has gone on a cleaning
spree and has done everything else. A lot of the
(05:25):
things that was promised to coach Graves. They have made
that commitment and they're moving forward with it. So we'll
just see. Because when you make an investment of this magnitude,
you gotta have results. And I don't think Jack Nation
is going to be happy if they stumble out of
the gate, because now you cannot say that they are
(05:50):
not all in, because they with a high like this,
they're going all in. But now my thing is what
does that say for the other sports? When you go
all in on football and then you don't succeed, where
does that leave your athletic department?
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Well, apparently they're across that bridge when they get to it, sir.
Right now, the focus at hand is on the gridiron,
and they have spoken loud and proud, you can't even
say speaking softly, and carrying a big stick.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
They swing in the wood on this move.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
What though, doctor, the Southern might be making a commitment
to their entire athletic department, because I think a couple
of weeks ago or a few weeks ago, they made
a commitment to both basketball coaches. You know, both basketball
coaches have been extended, both both will be there until
the end of the decade. Okay, so they've made a
(06:46):
commitment when it comes to basketball. Uh, they've made a
commitment when it comes to football. But you know, last
I heard Southern baseball was still struggling. So where's the
amendment for some of the other sports.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Well, as they say to be continued, sir, to be continuous.
But you know, a coach, I love the bluff, but
I'm not concerned about the bluff. This week, we got fish,
my friends, and it's time, as they say, to get
down to the nitty gritty. We got this championship game
(07:27):
coming up this weekend in Jackson, Mississippi. We got Jackson
State defending champions at home Easton Division champ hosting my
beloved Prairie View A and M University Panthers.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
There's no need for you to ask me who I'm
pulling for.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
I'm pulling for not just as a fan, but logically,
I've summarizing broken some things down. I'm pulling for the Panthers.
Folks been hearing from me all week. I wouldn't hear
your take on this thing right now? Coach, where you standing.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
In off this?
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Okay? Well I'll tell you what. I will give you
my take on the championship game after we finish up,
just a little business, because I want to give you
some credit because you saw something coming that none of
the rest of us fought. In other words, you put
your mouth where you felt your heart was. And I'm
(08:30):
talking about the last you know, we had three games
left in this.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Season, yes, sir, and you called.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
You probably had the biggest upset of the year. But
if I'm gonna start out in Montgomery, where Alabama State
played host to Tuskegee, right, Alabama State won that game
fifty eight to twenty one. In the Turkey Day class,
Alabama State was down twenty one to seven, being up
winning the game fifty eight to twenty one. And so
(09:00):
Alabama State is not playing in the championship game, but
they're gonna get an A plus for their last game
of the season, and I'm gonna give them an A
for the year.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
I'm gonna give them a A plus for the performance
and the A minus for the year because that lost
to Jackson State. I mean, good night, I actually thought
they were gonna win. I've been picking Alabama State the
last two or three seasons, and they finally came through
somewhat for me on my picks. They finally came through.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I got you, I got you. And then on Saturday
we had two contests. I'm gonna go to the Bayou
Classic first where Southern and Gramlin teed it up. Southern
won the game twenty eight to twenty seven in a
fantastic game, and I really, really really liked the effort
(09:54):
that Southern played with. Southern won that game twenty eight
to twenty seven. Southern and A and Grammlin's gonna have
to take a C on this one, you know what.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
I can agree with that, and I'm gonna tell you why.
The other day I got a little backlash from Ramblin Nation,
but it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
I didn't make the schedule.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Although Bramlin finished seven and five, that was one of
the most suspects seven and five seasons I've seen in
a long time. They had a multiple wins over some
Division two programs. They actually went I want to say,
three and four in conference play, but on paper they
looked like they had a pretty good year.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Slightly deceptive to me, I do.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Believe that Mickey Joseph may have done enough to secure
at least it's not an extension, but the remaining of
his contract. And you know, people, they take it rough.
And the Arrival games, man, they take it personal when
you lose the Arrival game and the way they lost
that game, they can have them at.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
He's going to the principal's office.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
He might not get suspended anything, but he had to
go to the principal's office.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
And then of course the game of all games, Yes.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Mississippi Valley playing the host.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Of Florida and them, Yes, sir.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Mississippi Valley won the game thirty five to thirty one.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
And you called it, sir, Yes, sir, you called it.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Yes, will get an age, Fredie and them has to
take a C minus on this, And Lord have mercy.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
I hope.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
I don't know if the rally of Nations can can uh,
if their fans can muster true losses in a row
to Mississippi Valley? How far has fam you fallens?
Speaker 2 (11:54):
A coach?
Speaker 1 (11:55):
I got a good friend of mine who dodge basketball
play by play for Sam You mister Melvin Bills, and
he still hain't answered my call. He still hadn't answered
my call. And now the joke, the joke and needs
(12:17):
are it is what it is?
Speaker 2 (12:19):
You know?
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Does someone asked, uh, the brother Hall have room in
his van?
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Know?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
What do you mean? Does Hall have room in his van?
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Because Coley is gonna need a ride home because they're
not gonna And with also the wonder who we're talking about.
Brother Lee Hall is the voice of the Mississippi Valley
State Death the devil does. He's not outstanding job. Now,
he didn't say that. It was somebody that was asked.
That's because they were so excited in a Albina. They
was like, this was their swag championship.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
And I gave.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
By Missippi Valley an A plus a plus, and I
gave Fam a D. I gave him a D because
you could have put you well, not could have should
have put for a better effort, at least to break
five hundred against Valley who had your number last season
in Tallahassee, which brings up the question mark, does Cozy
(13:23):
have enough? Was this a coaching motivation failure? Because we
know the talent if you.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Look at it on paper, there's no way that this.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Game should either have been that close. That's why I'm
concerned if Cozy is gonna survive, right.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
I think it was just it was just a trap game,
four Fam you because what you talking about playing the
game on Thanksgiving weekend when those kids really had nothing
that in their minds they had nothing to play for.
They rather be at home. And ever didn't they play
that way?
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Oh yeah, as a matter of fact, that's one of them.
Did tell the mother, I will keep it running. We'll
be right, We'll be right back. Keep it running, man,
don't don't worry about nothing. And here's another thing I
got to address about this particular game. And I might
sound like a broken record. What it is, what it is?
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Of coach?
Speaker 1 (14:19):
They had reported that the attendance for that game of
two thousand, one hundred five individuals in the stadium and
coach A Mississippi Valley does not even have two thy
one hundred five students enrolled in the institution.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Okay, b first hand report.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
There may have been fifty people in the stands. Hold, no,
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
I ain't a good coach. I ain't through yet. I
ain't through yet. I ain't through yet. I ain't through.
You did we give a what we say a ballpark
figure of tickets? Soul? Right? Their mission was free?
Speaker 1 (15:13):
So what are we doing?
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Coach?
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Wow? Wow?
Speaker 2 (15:19):
What are you doing now?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Maybe they were counting the ticket takers and a ticket seller.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Coach, coach and security and coach.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
You could have counted the squads.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
They even the band. They said the band was gonna
be there. It wasn't even Valley's band in the house.
It was a local high school band and they only
sent the drummers.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Wow, wow, wow.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Coach, something's gotta give. Man, we gotta be I know,
we take pride in being the most attended FCS. We've
been carrying that title for some consecutive years now. But
we got to stop the mad this man, we stop
to stop the man.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
And it's not you know what.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
But that that means that you should be celebrating Valley
players even more. Yes that that they they competed with
an empty house. So in other words, it was just
like them being at practice.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
It was a glorified e scrimmage game right right right.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
It was instead of the spring.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Football, it was the fall football, right And.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Then all you had was a few the senior's parents
showed up for the game and I think they said,
text me the.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Final you know it was.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
It was really you know, uh a deal, but they said,
the game's got to be played, you know, And it
is what it is. Going back to the dynamics and
the economics, which is why the game was postponed from
October fourth because it was like who who? First of all,
And I'm not trying to be ugly because what it is,
what it is. I can see, oh, fam use coming Chad, Okay,
(17:00):
who they're playing? Valley or I passed, yep, I passed,
and you get what you get. But Coach Buckley got
his first victory. They played hard, they won, and they
made me look like a genius coach.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yes, yes, absolutely, that was my point. That was my point, sir,
that was my point. I wanted you to I wanted
you to go out on a high note. You did
that because you picked valid. And when you made the pick,
I said, are you sure you said I got to
swing for the fences?
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Yes, sir, it didn't look it didn't help my final stand.
I got one closer. But I feel good, Coach, I
feel all. As a matter of fact, Coach allted to
declare myself the paper champ for making that pick and
my Panthers making it to the championship. But I'll acknowledge
and and bow to the king for his picks in
(17:55):
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Right, But let me just say this, sir, you should
be half Panther nation should be happy because now you
all are city at the table, getting ready to just
snatch snatch victory from the miles of be I love.
(18:20):
You all have an opportunity. You all have an opportunity
to make everything right for the little people because coming
into this week, there are a lot of people that
are not giving your Panthers a chance only because that
game is being played at Jackson Memorials I mean in
(18:42):
Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi. So the big matchup is here.
Panther Nations should be proud. I tell you where I stand.
This is this game to me is a toss. So
let me tell you the things that I have looked at.
Prev all you here has proven that they can play
on the road.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Yes they play well.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
But there's just something about Jackson State in Mississippi playing
at Memorial Stadium. It's got me all tied up. This
is gonna be a very competitive game. I think it'll
be the winner will only win by three points. And
(19:29):
I'm still undersided as I'm as I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Oh well, let me help you decide, sir.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
And I'm putting it out there, sir, And look I'm
laying aside the TV purple and gold glasses, but they
still on top.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Of my head. Okay, per Review twenty one, Jackson State seventeen.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
All right, you got the two top defensive teams in
the country. I mean in the conference. Your TV leads
the team in defense.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Jackson is number two, Yes, sir.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
On the offensive side, Jackson State is averaging thirty three
points a game. Reviews averaging thirty one points a game.
That's why I say, sir, I do believe. I do
believe it's gonna be a very close game, and I
only think it's gonna be three points. You've got a
full point spread there, Yes, sir, I just think that
(20:24):
these two teams are so close. Jackson has the number
one rushing offense in two hundred and sixty nine yards
of game prayer Review is a thirty two hundred and
two yards a game right against the rush. Jackson State
is number one against the rush. Give it up amazingly.
(20:47):
One hundred and ten yards a game. Review is not
that bad. They're giving up one hundred and forty one
yards per game. So when you look at some of
these numbers, it's just how close that the two teams are.
And when you look at passing on the on the
offensive side of the ball. TV has Jackson b average
(21:10):
two hundred and twenty eight yards a game. Jackson State
the average two hundred and nine yards of games. Well,
when you come to pass and Bluefoo, your TV PAS
is a number one. They only giving up one hundred
and twenty six.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Yards a game against the pass, sir, and Jackson State
is giving up two hundred and seven yards.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
So when you look at the numbers, everything is so close.
It's a top up. So I feel like it might
come down to special teams. Special teams play who can
make the plane off with special teams. That's just how
(21:53):
close this game is, sir.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
And and I gave the slight advantage to special teams
at Jackson State, but that's not gonna matter. That's not
gonna matter. PV's gonna take care of business, Sir. PV's
gonna take care of business, coach. If you look at
the last three four weeks of season play, M Purview
(22:16):
has been trending upward, sir. They've been trending upward. They
are clicking taking no prisoners no prisoners. And I believe
the fact that they're on the road is going to
play to their favor.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
I really do, I really do. It's going to play
to their favor.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
And when the dust is settled, you'll hear me singing,
we are the champions. We are the champions, and I'm
looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Coach. I'm sure I'm truly truly looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
I will not miss I have not missed this game, sir.
Forward to it.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Yes, sir, So you're still not giving a pick, and
I'm gonna respect that. I'm gonna respect that.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
And I know you're torn, you that Eastern fan and
all that kind of stuff, and you know we're gonna,
we're gonna. We're gonna see that. We're gonna we'll discuss it.
But but I gotta get in some hoop talk, sir.
I got to get in some hoop talk. Southern's looking strong,
averaging NY.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
And and and when you look at the schedule, we
once again out of conference play. Uh. We have picked
up uh a couple of victories. I think the last
one was uh uh. I think we had Coastal Carolina
(23:53):
a and m uh my bulldogs went down by seven
on Sunday, but South and beat Northwestern State seventy.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Five to seventy three, So that's another.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Win for the Swack. Then of course all Corn won
their first game of the year. All Corns beat Indiana
State eighty one to seventy four, so so, and then
of course Jackson State beat Louisiana fifty one and forty five,
so once again out of conference. When it comes to basketball,
(24:27):
we have picked up a couple of wins, and I
think between Southern and Patune Cookman, we were for a
long season. And when it comes to.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Basketball, no doubt now, and you know, I gotta pump
my panthers up. They're three and five, but they've been
extremely competitive and coach, if you look at what they're
averaging on points scored and points aliud, it's like a
tenth or two tenthsil a point difference. They've been playing
some average if they maintained defense, keep that defense intensified,
(25:04):
which we know coach Byron Smith uh stresses defense.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
First.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
I think we're gonna we're gonna shock some folks in
this in this twenty six campaigns, sir, right, and.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
Then you all beat uh the Southern Mississippi. Yes, you're
averaging sixty eight points a game. Uh well, actually right now,
it's even you average eight point six points a game
and you'll you're giving up seventy six point eight points
a game. So yeah, so he's defense is clicking for him. Uh.
And you know, I just think for you all, you
(25:36):
just gotta stay away from injuries. You had so many
injuries last year.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
I know.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Yeh yeah, that that was unheard. That's that was an
unprecedented year when it comes to injuries.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
Yes sir, yes sir, yes sir.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
And now what what you got for us on that
that women's side of a hoop factor?
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Well, on the women's side, I still think that we're
gonna go with what the uh the preseason rank he
told you about Southern. Now, I'm not so sure when
it comes to Alabama and M because it's if Walker
does not if kell Walker does not remain healthy. I
think Alabama and M has shown that they're gonna struggle
(26:16):
early because, uh, coming out the gate. Uh, the Lady
Bulldogs are one and six on the season and the
only win has been against Talladiggas, So they've they've got
a lot of improvement to do. But but when you
look at Texas, Texas Southern women have played well along
(26:37):
with Southern Southern's played a very tough schedule. But they're
one and four, but when you watch it, they're one
and four when you watch them play, they're still getting
some things done. And so I still still think that
southerns women will be the cream of the crop when
it comes to conference play. But they every all these
teams got to get get through with these non conference schedules, so.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
No doubt they're taking some poundings.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Uh. And then when you look at the score in Texas,
Southern's up there along with Jackson State. Then on the
defensive side, even though the Lady Bulldogs will only have
one win, they're leading the conference in defense. Uh, you know,
they only they're only giving up US sixty five points
of games. So it's gonna be interesting, uh on the stretch.
And I just look forward to watching all these these
(27:25):
teams play. And you know, as a coach this time
of year, you know, you you feel for everybody because
you know they're out there.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Yeah the fundraising season.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Look they're running so that they can howl these expensive football.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Coaches in that kind.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Did I hear some basketball buyas coming out that I'm yeah, man,
the sacrificial lambs getting out there and get done. Go
out there. Make me a one of the thousand. You
get to keep two thousand. We gotta put the rest
of this football program. What you know, it's all good,
(28:08):
you know, And look at my post, Lady Fanthers that
I know they've been playing some up you know, up
in the.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Deep end of the pool.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
They got a little practice on boxing out because they
getting out of rebound to death.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Man.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
But you know, things that get tight as we get
to a conference play, and before you know it, coach,
we in December already, good night, and so it'll be
it'll be time for the screws will be tightened with
this conference play. And I'm looking forward to it and
get the chance to hear you do your thing on
the microphone with some of that play by play calling, sir.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Well you yes, yeah. We we kick it off again
this week. Both teams are at home. We got Wednesday
the men to take on Tennessee State on Wednesday night
and then Thursday morning at eleven am Alabama and then
women Lady Bulldogs will take on.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Tuskegee in the game that why coach eleven o'clock in
the morning.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Coach, Well, the N two A has done that the
last three years. So all the women programs, they're trying
to expand the brand. They bring into high school. Oh,
we'll have four or five thousand people in there now
because what they're doing is they bring they're gonna bring
in all of the high school teams will will a
lot teams. Student bodies will get an opportunity. Uh, middle
(29:28):
I'm sorry, elementary and middle schools will get an opportunity
to come to the games, and they just they make
a day of it. The busses are lining up. In fact,
you have to get there earlier because when you get
caught with in that line of busses, you'll never get in.
They have busses coming in, okay.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
So then with I guess with the eleven o'clock, the
kiddos could get in and out and back in time
to go home and talk about their experience, right, and.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
They get lunch, you know that kind of thing. So
it's been great. The last couple of year is the
A and M has done it. Uh. And then when
you look around the country, you look at some of
these games, they have some pretty decent crowds, okay, okay,
And and and then that that's basketball. So so that's
that's where Alabama A and M is in terms of basketball.
(30:16):
We haven't been at home for a while, and so
I know that the students would be happy to play
at home. But A and them has been very unique
once again on the men's side. And they're gonna play
like six home games you know in the non conference
sense schedule. That's unheard of.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Yeah, that's that's a lot.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
I mean, y'all, y'all, y'all must find some money to
pay some folks to come in town.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
Well, either that and and also that they told them
that that their budget is not that high. They don't
have to raise that much money.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
Oh wow, right, coach you that wrote to one of
them checks. Then they say, y'all, don't worry about We're
just gonna stay home. Into r p I rankings right Well.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
See, I think when when we did a little research,
and them is one of the lowest when it comes
to game guarantees for basketball. I think they only were
responsible for like two bits between two fifty three fifty
for the year. The highest we've seen is well over
(31:19):
a million dollars for me following the spack.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
So no no hold on who woa, whoa whoa, whoa
coach just interest the men's responsible budget. It's only two
fifty three fifty Yeah, that's unheard.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Of, right, That's that's what I'm saying. Yes, wow, yes, yes, yes,
we we we did some research on it. Yeah, we
did some research on it.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
So I know you're asking for a recount, ain't you?
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Absolutely? Absolutely so. Uh, if the other squack schools would
jump in line, you'll see better non conference schedules because you,
oh man, more home games if that were true. So,
I think the commitment from the athletic and the administration
(32:09):
at A and M has really helped our coaches at
Alabama and them. Okay, don't put that kind of pressure
on them to two. I'll go out and play all
those games.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
I think it's good. It's good for the kids.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
Now, I got to ask this question, and I know
you might be a little removed since you last coached,
but on the average for our schools to host these events,
what's the normal payout expect to see range, you know,
to host a team and what all is usually covered
(32:45):
in those payouts?
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Well, like if you bring it in a Division two opponent,
a lot of times you can give them five or
six thousand dollars and probably throw in some rooms and
in some cases I threw in meals also to get
to get a home game. Now, when you when you
start talking about playing regional folds a lot of times,
(33:08):
what I try to do is just go home and home.
All right, Well all to the years. You come to
me this year, I'll come to you next year, all right,
So that that gives me a home game. But it
didn't cost me anything but my travel when it was
my turn to travel. Now locally in the state of Alabama,
(33:31):
if I went to you ain't b, which is only
an hour and a half away, that's a sixty thousand
dollars game for me. You ain't be would not come
to an l when I coached because we played in Aylmore.
But since I've retired and they had an event center,
you ain't b has been in there already, and the
(33:52):
women's team has been in there twice. Wow, right, And
and that's just that's a team that's just an hour
and a half away.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Now is that treated?
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Is that treated more like a home and home or
you have to compensation? Okay, that's home a home.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
So see there is no money other than the only
expense you have would be the year that you travel.
It would be your expenses. Okay, okay, right, and then
if you minimize that on the on for a team
that's on an hour and a half away, you really
could get off the bus and play that. But in
our day in time, no one's doing that. You know.
They still go spend it. They spend the night and
(34:27):
and practice, get practices. So you got practice bus and meals.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Oh on couch.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
Now let me ask, you said, because I heard something,
but I got to answer so I can get clears.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Do you think that's a bit overkill it kid?
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Yes, it is, Yes, it is, because you can you
can you can play that game if you can get
you if you can get you a shoot around time
on game day, you could go in there and get
get that game in and get out of there. You
can save that money.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
I didn't know if he was gonna be candied with
me now, but I preci that's why we love, you said,
because you.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Are the guru.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
Now let me, yes, you just you sent five to
six thousand dollars for the vision to what if you
by chance playing in AIA program?
Speaker 3 (35:09):
Same thing, same thing. You don't have that's not a
lot of money. That's not a lot of money for
us to give up, but it's a lot of money
for those schools to put in their program, especially if
you bring it in local. I'm not talking about giving
a team coming from California five thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
I'm talking about.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
Playing an in state opponent bringing them to your place. Yes,
so you can get a home game and let me
let me, let me just throw out something for you
if I played it. If I gave Tuskiget five thousand dollars,
that's a sellout for me. That's a sellout with our fans,
got standing room only.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Now, if I gave Miles College, which is an hour away,
hour and a half, if I gave Miles College five
thousand dollars, that's a sellout for me in basketball. So
I give you one even worse than that, eed Ai
(36:10):
Oakwood University give them twenty five three thousand. That's a sellout.
So I'm making I'm giving up a little money and
I'm making money. And that's how I did my schedule.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
Well, let me ask you this cool get them every year.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Now I didn't, right, I didn't get TuS Giggee every year.
I didn't get Miles every year, I didn't get oak
Wood every year.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
Do you see this potentially becoming a rebirthed trend? And
when I say that, because it's about wins and losses,
right and in order to build your resume, to build
your team's confidence. Can you see And then with the
way these bigger conferences are are cracking down, not being
(37:01):
as lucrative with their offers to our programs where we
still gotta get games in do you see this poss
being a reverse trend?
Speaker 3 (37:11):
Yeah, it's gonna happen because when you take football, if
the n C two A, if if the Powers to
Be tell these Power five, Power four schools, if they're
basing their playoffs selections on scheduling, that means they're gonna
drop us. They're gonna drop FCS opponents, So you're not
(37:35):
gonna have that big payday in football. Now in basketball,
when they start talking about r PI, they're gonna stop dropping.
They're gonna drop some of us because our conference r
PI is so low. Right, in order for you to
to get games, you're gonna be forced to go to
this mess to where we're playing we're playing down just
(37:59):
to get home games.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Right right, and and and and the truth we told
coach on and I'm saying FCS. So when I say hour,
I'm saying FCS. I not exclusively just saying HBCU because
of the r P, I really is out the window.
When you are one bid conference, should you just work
on second as many wins as you can.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
I as a coach, that was my philosophy. I begged
my school not to force me to play all.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Those those guarantee games.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
I begged my school, and I had some pretty good,
nice presidents, And I promise you the only time that
I just sold my soul was when a president allowed
us to use the money so that we can renovate Elmore. Okay,
okay that that was one of the only times during
(38:52):
my career where the game guarantees money directly came back
to my program and and in fitted the university, not
just my basketball team, because when we came in and
redid Aylmore h with the seats and the lighting and
and the PA system and all of that that benefited
their time university because Elmore was was a multi purpose facility.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
Right right, I miss old Aylmore Man. I know y'all
got a brand new facility and you're.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
In the new millennium. Now. Old Elmore was a unique
little place. I called it Groove Baker's Place. Man. I
just I enjoyed. I enjoyed the atmosphere.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
You know I missed it because that's the only places
I coached in.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Yes, sir, yes, sir, Well, coach, I know, uh we
got this championship game even though you didn't make a
commitment to the call.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
I ain't not commitment.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
I know you TV only because Jackson State is at home.
I'm gonna go with Jackson State, and that way i'll
beal to eat cro next week.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Well, you don't have to eat Crow, coach, will you
can get on the bus with me.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Yeah, that that's true.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
That's true.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
But that's that's a long ride. Jacks is a little closer.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
Yeah, you sent it the buff and sold them Jackson nice. Hey,
I heard you, coach, how dagg you coach? And then
you're gonna come in my gym, coach, we're gonna have
to run you out of you. I got your coach,
I got you. I got You're a smart man. You're
a smart man, a smart man.
Speaker 1 (40:26):
Look my part used to say, well, my mama called
me son because I have a bright moment every now
and then. Right, that was that, and that was a
good move, sir, good move.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Well, coach.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
I'm looking forward to the weekend, of course, and I
know you're looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
It's always a blast to talk uh uh. We say sport,
but we talk life and just talk just human nature,
relational uh conversations, and it's just a joy and a
breath of fresh air.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
We talk all sports.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
That's what I like. And in fact, we speaking of
all sports. We want to get Florida and them rapped
Lady Rattlers volleyball team a little love as they go
up against Texas. Yeah Friday, Yeah, Texas Friday. Yeah, you
win the swag and then you draw one of the
top tens.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
And go and go straight to the gauntlet. Go straight
to the gauntlet, you know. All right, wait, wait a minute,
I'm the champion, y'all put me on death roll.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
But it's okay, it's okay.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
You know, go out there, Ratlers and strike, strike and
strike again, you know, and look, you know what I
would call I'm not saying they gonna have a chance
if they could win a set.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
I would be so happy if they co win a set,
you know, and we we got a first thing first,
so they will.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Be representing the conference and we're going to be pulling
for them one thousand percent. Coach, I want to give
you some clothing thoughts in commons said before we get
out of here.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
In the floor is now yours.
Speaker 3 (41:50):

thank everybody, and I hope everybody had a thankful Thanksgiving

Speaker 1 (42:21):
What really needed, well, Sir, the best team will be PV.
