Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Diamond Talk
featuring hit baseball coach of the Purview and of University campus,
none other than Coach Daniel Do And coach, how you
doing this week, sir?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Going good? God? How about yourself?

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Well, that's what I dare not complain. Well, look, man,
I'm going to give you a fair warning. People like
what you've been saying. But they say you've been kind
of like a poker guy man, holding back and reserving
on being a little free with some of that information.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Man, what you got to say to that?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Man, what I would say is that that's what keeps you.

Speaker 5 (00:42):
You know what I'm saying, We gotta keep it coming back.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Well, very good.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Look, last time we got together it was the opening
of fall of baseball.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
How have things been going up to? God?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
About a week under your belt now, man, give us
an update of what's going on.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
On the camp.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, things going fine.

Speaker 5 (01:01):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
You know, we it's it's a it's a process. And
I keep telling the guys that you know, like, we're
not chasing results. You know this time, you're even in
the spring. But you know, right now, it's getting guys
to buy in and understand, like We've got to go
about our business and playing the game the right way

(01:25):
and the results will take care of themselves. So that's
been the big teaching point. And then this week as
you're going to inter squads, another start of inter squads
today and tomorrow, it's the same message, you know, like
just control what you can control, you know, and and

(01:45):
once the bat hits the ball after that, like it
is what it is, you know, control what you can
control on the mountain and see your delivery and your
and your points are right once the ball comes out
of your.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Hand, it is what it is right right now?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Who God understand that, coach when you.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Are doing what you're doing right now. This is your
first go around here at Perrie View. You got in late,
you got the fall campaign started. What exactly are you
looking for? Because it's somewh an exclusive group right now,
no walkorns. These are almost like preferred walk ons or
just guys, not preferred walk ons, but you know, an

(02:25):
exclusive group. What exactly are you looking for? Because you
somewhat handpicked who you got. You've been had fourteen, you've
brought in twenty two, and so what exactly are you
looking for right now?

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Right now? I'm looking for guys to understand what it
is we're asking them to do and just do the
little things the way we want it done. And that's,
like I said, and that's hard for you know, eighteen
twenty two year olds. Like they want to see results.
They want to see, you know, things happen right away.

(03:01):
And that's I mean, obviously that's the culture we live
in for an instant you know, gratification and whatnot, and
and and that's and that's nothing against them, you know,
my kids are the same way, you know, but like
it's just getting them to understand. Listen, we are looking
for you.

Speaker 6 (03:18):
Guys to just stay with the process.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
And that's hard to do, especially when you don't have
success or see success right away. And I'm really looking
for our guys to just attack the process and attack
the little things, the fundamental things that we ask them
to do, and then do it again and keep doing
it and repeating it and repeating it. That's all we're
looking for them to do, honestly.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yes, or just that's simplify insane approach. You know, hey,
just keep doing the same thing over and over and
over again.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
That's it. That's it.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Okay, Now, when when you when you look at that,
and I know a lot of people put a lot
of infests on for US facilities and technology, and I
do understand that and all of it is appropriate, but
for me, and you can help bring me up to
speed me because I'm accused of being called a relic

(04:13):
when it comes to baseball. It's still to me the
ultimate individual team sport, and it's not necessarily about how
fast you are, how big you are, how strong you are,
but it's more of the neck up approach. When I
say that, the baseball IQ understanding situations and perfecting the fundamentals.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, I'm sent. I think it always comes back to
the fundamentals, and that's what we preach on a daily basis.
You know, I told you, I tell our team I
feel like every other day, hey man, we need to
do simple better than everybody else. If we can do
simple the best in our league play, like, we're gonna

(05:03):
set ourselves up to be successful, and not just in
league play. Outside of the league, like when we go
play Texas A and M in a midleague game, when
they hit round balls, we need to catch it, go
to first base. When they hit fly balls, we need
to go catch it when we're in the box. We
need to not swing at bad pitches. We need to
grow strike And as long as we do those simple things,

(05:24):
I don't care who we're playing against. We're gonna put
ourselves in a position to be successful. We might not
win the game, but I can promise you you're gonna
have a hard time winning games if you walk side
ten people. You know, you have a hard time winning games.
You can't play defense if you strike out ten times.
So it's all about for me, It definitely is all

(05:46):
about the fundamental side of things. Now we use technology,
you know, we talk about things, and obviously, like you
talk about player personnel and how you want to play,
you know, your style of play, all that, but man,
at the end of the day, it's about again throwing strikes,

(06:10):
you know, controlling the striking zone from an offensive standpoint,
and playing high level deaf And I always.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Come back to that.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yes, well, I gotta ask this question, and I'm basing
this on a scenario on the major league ranks just
last night.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
You may have peaked at it.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Basically loaded situation picture comes in and gets the ideal deal,
but kind of planic forgets the situation at the moment.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
And that's what we're talking about, that neck up approach.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Now here, here's another relic reference again in my day
coming up, we used to have classroom time, and what
we call classroom time it was situations. Okay, put down
your bats, put down your balls, your gloves, we're gonna
go over situations. This has happened, that is happening. Do
you guys implement anything like that? And I thought of

(07:00):
that when I saw that play or witness that play
happened just the other mind, Like, man, that's that's a
neck up problem because you can no one can out
run a baseball.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
But you have to.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Always be reminded of the situations. And for those who
might not understand what I'm talking about, basically, loaded young
man come in for relief down while they're doing everything.
It seems like to me as a former catcher, Hey,
the catcher reminds this picture, here's the situation, know what's what,
and and just keep everything on the level because yeah,

(07:34):
he's professional, he's young, and it can happen to anybody,
especially when we get back down to a collegiate level.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Yeah, I'll give you, I'll give you an example.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
So we.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Try and put our guys in positions all the time
in practice where and I tell the guys, yeah, this
drill is meant to speed you up. I'm trying to
make you panic. I'm trying to cause stress under us.
And so some of our guys, you know, we're doing
these drills and whatnot, and just because it's a new drill,

(08:13):
they start to panic or they start to move fast.
And so to your.

Speaker 6 (08:17):
Point, you know, we try and teach, and you.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Know, they sometimes they look at me like they're bored.
But I'm like, hey, man, like this is a teaching moment.
As players and even sometimes as coaches. Coaches will fall
victims victim to it as well. We've got to slow down,
process what's happening before the situation happens. Take them, take
a deep breath and survey. Okay, the runners were here,

(08:46):
this is what the situation is, this is what I'm
being asked to do. Okay, and then go execute it.
And guys, they make the moment bigger than it needs
to be. They start trying to play faster and this,
that and the other, and so one hundred percent, we
we try and put our guys in situations like that,
at least a few times a week so we can

(09:09):
get comfortable playing in those moments.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
You know, I gave the example of the other day.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
I was a guys, if you think this is hard,
wait till we show up at at Grambling and you
walk in over there and you've got the parents yelling
at you, and you've got the fans yelling at you,
you know, and there's a couple of hundred people. Stand
that's a stressful moment. We're gonna have to be able
to slow down and just execute what's being asked of us,

(09:36):
you know what I'm saying. And so nah, I think
we as coaches, we have to teach our guys how
to handle those moments. And yeah, like we'll sit down
and we'll go over film and really slow it down
so guys can see themselves. Hey, look at how fast
moving right here, Like.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
Look look at that guy that got in and look recognizable.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
You know what I'm saying. And and we haven't done
film yet. That's coming. We were getting our cameras situated
and whatnot. But percent I ain't believe in that.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Per Yes, sir, now, coach you you you made a reference. Man,
it's so tame. Now, man, y'all not getting harassed.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
Not the swack man. Come now, I'm gonna have to
agree that you want to talk. Man, they used to.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Talk about so bad when we played it. If you
didn't have we say, you can't have rabbit ears, right,
But stands they get talking about you and your mama
so bad. Make you want to go up in the stands.
Now they'll throw you out the ballpark. Man, if you
even talk to you can't.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
Show up to the ballpark with a bullhorn.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Use that.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Come on, man, stress.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
Players, that players that maybe maybe we need to have
a group meeting something. Hey, bro have some fun. They
look at nice they playing. They're much better facilities than
we've ever had. And man, no, I do get it.
Those new levels, you know, new situations for everybody. But

(11:17):
the mental part is so critical that sometimes I think
it's slightly overlooked because we look at how a guy.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
May look in the uniform.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
That he might not have the perfect body, he might
have a twenty five percent body fat. But if he's
a ballplayer and hustles, some of those things can be overlooked.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
Could they not? For sure? Oh yeah, for sure.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
That's you know, obviously, when we go out on the
recruit and trail. You know, you look for had to
pass the access right like you know, there's a guy
we talked about as the staff the other day. He
doesn't pass the access.

Speaker 5 (11:53):
But man, when you.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
When you watch him play like he makes plays, he's
on base. Like those guys can help you win games.
You know, they might not help you win a photo shoot,
but when you come down.

Speaker 5 (12:07):
And win, you got to.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Have some guys, you know, yes, sir, yes, sir.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Well, they said it takes all types to put a
team together, the program together, and that and definitely when
we're talking about pictures, pictures, I don't feel what anyone
says of the the imbalanced humans on the planet of
Finicky and so superstitious that it's ridiculous.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
Yeah, I would agree with you there.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
They're a different breed, especially left.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
Man who you tell. But the thing about.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
It is it's those type of personalities and quirkiness that
builds a good staff, that builds their camaraderie. And you
got some guys, man, no matter what you do, how
you try to work them, they can't be broken. And
they seemed like at the most inappropriate time they got
something off beat a goofy to say that just breaks

(13:05):
up the whole serious tone even like, Man.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
What am I gonna do with this dude? If you
had to pick.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Someone like that, Do you have anyone that's that's kind
of shining like that right now in your program?

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (13:17):
Man, there's a kid. He's not left handed though, he's.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Right holded, but he's a he's.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
A pitcher, he's a he's.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
A iCal cancer. He just got here and he's kind
of that dude Like whenever I see him, he's kind
of those kids in the yard just brings his smile
to his face. I mean, uh, he usually had something
slick to say. His name is his name is Kelvin Battles.
He usually has something kind of slick to stay.

Speaker 6 (13:50):
And I don't I think he means to.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
He's just that's kind of his personality. You know, it's
my personality. Guy got good energy all the time at
the ball park, and we're expecting him these good things
for us here at PV. He's he's an athletic kid.
He's got a good arm, he's got a good breaking ball.
But he's got that personality where you sometimes you just
kind of look at him and I'm like man, what

(14:15):
is he doing? You know, that's just kind of him.
And I tell you, well, we're glad he's We're glad
he's in a pampooner former.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Hey, man, you got to have at least one on
every squad.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
I don't care where you go who it is.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
And people outside they're like, where does he even ship? Man,
you'll just leave him alone and let him do his thing,
and and and and then you're gonna always have that
other dude. And I don't know if you got him
on your squad dit if he's been identified as challenged
as all get out, but you got to make an
exception to the rule because they ain't no subject what
he's going to do or say.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
You're laughing before, oh yeah, you know, oh yeah yeah.

Speaker 5 (15:01):
Now everybody's got those guys.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Everybody's got those guys. Are you like, man, just getting
into the game, Just get.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
We're talking right now with coach Dan you Dueling on
our weekly baseball discussion Diamond Talk on the campus of
Purview and the university coach. Last time we talked, you
were being a little reclusive man about some ideas and
some things You're trying to get together.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
Are we any closer this week till you revealing what's
going on.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
Not yet.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
And it's funny because I reached out to my contact
and to get a confirmation and uh, I got a
soft confirmation, but still nothing, no contract sign or nothing.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Finalized, nothing finalized, and you won't even give us an
inkling of what's going on.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
Is that what you're telling me?

Speaker 2 (15:59):
That's what I'm telling That's what I'm.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
Telling you, coach.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Apparently you don't hate doing it to me, coach, because
you keep doing it to me. Man, you keep doing.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
It to me. Now you're making me look bad in
front of my people. Man.

Speaker 5 (16:13):
Oh no, no, yeah.

Speaker 6 (16:15):
But like I said, when it's all done, that will
be the first to know.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Okay, okay, Now, what thing I was thinking about, coach,
especially during the fall season, We're gonna start allowing you
to feature us a baseball tip of the week, and
i'ma I'm gonna put your put your baseball knowledge to
drop you.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
You got one for us this week.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Now you can give us one tip for the week
that can help that young baseball player trying to get
through the high school years of life and want to
try to play some college ball and partake on a
D one level might not necessarily be at Purview, but uh,
this college ball period and a tip that that kid
can work on.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Yeah, I understand. I think one of the things that
we talked about in terms of the mental part of
the game. So as coaches, you know, when we go
out and we try and find players, whether it's junior
college ranks, transfer, portal high school guys, it doesn't matter.
That's one of the pieces that we definitely what we

(17:17):
look for.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
And as a young player, you know, I think you
have to really.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Pay attention to the game and study the game and
watch baseball, like watch the game. There's some kids, you know,
you'd be amazed how many kids play the game, but
they actually don't watch baseball, you know, like you asked them,
hey man, we last ty you went to or watched

(17:46):
the major league game even on TV, and these kinds
have they just have no idea. And it's like, hey man,
like you know, you can watch a lot of baseball
on TV nowadays, like you can watch college games on TV.

Speaker 5 (18:02):
And I invite kids to come out.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
And watch our games, but just literally shit back and watch.

Speaker 6 (18:06):
The game and learn, like learn the game.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
We have too many kids that are just playing with
no rhyme or reason, and then you know they're showcasing
and going to these showcases and not the showcases are bad.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
What we have one coming up on October.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
Nineteenth as well. But like, guys need to watch the game,
learn the nuances, you know what is Again, But just
like with tar players, Okay, if you're watching TV and
there's runners on.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
Base or whatever situation is, start.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Thinking about it as a player.

Speaker 5 (18:45):
What needs to happen?

Speaker 2 (18:47):
What is being asked of the hitter, what's being asked
of the picture, what are they trying to do, what's
the offense trying to do?

Speaker 4 (18:52):
What's the defense part of it?

Speaker 6 (18:53):
Like, really work on learning the game.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Because a lot of times, when guys get to our level,
you'd be amazed at how much time we just spend
teaching the fundamental situational aspects of how to play the game,
how to play winning baseball. A lot of people think
when they come to our level, Okay, we're going to
teach him how to hit the.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
Ball harder, further, throw harder.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
Now, man, a.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Lot of times we're teaching guys how to play baseball, how.

Speaker 6 (19:28):
To play and win games.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
You know what I'm saying all other stuff is great,
and obviously that's a part of the development process as well,
but we spend so much time, unfortunately, I think too
much time on just how to play baseball.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
So the sooner a kid.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Can get his mind wrapped around that and learn things
in that regard, we have.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
An advantage of our guys and they get.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
Here okay, okay, and that's the baseball tip and you'll
bring us one of these each week moving on out.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
Is that okay? Now, coach, before we get out of here, you.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Mandition about your showcase for October nineteenth. Can you give
us some details on that before we wrap up this week?

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Absolutely absolutely, We're gonna have a prospect camp. It's going
to start at ten am on October nineteenth. We'll put
kids through defensive evaluations, taking evaluations, and depending on how
many numbers we'll have, we will play a scrimmage or
do some game simulation type things to see just what
I just talked about, see how guys can you move

(20:35):
play and you know, in game settings. So it's gonna
be October nineteenth over here to think and for those
that want to register, if you go to our Twitter page,
our TV Twitter page, the link is on there. I'm
also tweeting it out and my page at coach doing

(20:58):

of that. So definitely definitely hope to see some from
solid in the area and follow our baseball page. We
have a new baseball page on Twitter. It's pv A
m U B S ball bs ball, yes, sir, b okay,

(21:22):
then boy s and then ball.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
Okay, okay, bs ball.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
You know, I hope that ain't no bad misinterpretation by
somebody here and they say bs BA. Coach, you know,
now before we go, there is there a registration fee
that comes with this October nineteenth.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Yes, sir, yes, sir pos one hundred dollars position players
one twenty five and two ways or one seventy five.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
Okay, okay, and give that that Twitter feed again, handle again, sir.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah, that's pv A m U bs ball bs B
A l L Okay.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
Then coach Dan you dueling with another diamond talk discussing
under the belts man.

Speaker 4 (22:08):
I hope you like the way this riode is coming off, sir.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
So far, so good, and we're looking forward to the
round US and the report and hopefully ladies and gentlemen,
he can reveal to us this big old secret he'd
been having on He is Dan, you, dueling baseball coach
at the Purview A and M University Panthers facilities, as he
refers to the home park as the tank behind my

(22:33):
