Speaker 1 (00:00):
Stay informed on local issues. On the Morning Spiel brought
to you my Royal Water on w k m Z.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
The moment that we've all been waiting for for a
week since Jason Young came up with the brilliant idea
of a West Virginia Supergroup draft. That's exactly what we're
going to do, and the rules are because I thought
about this, you can't draft yourself. Uh not that I
I would be inclined to draft myself, but I think
we also have to skip drafting anyone in this group

(00:30):
because I was thinking about from a musical perspective, if
I were building a music supergroup, I might draft Aristotle Jones,
or if I were, if I were, if I were,
if I were building a if I were building like
a traveling acting troop, I might I might draft Jason Young.
So so no, no, no drafting.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Jason can sing too well, yes, but there is no
hype man quite like Aristotle.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
You gotta you gotta check out, you know. Jason and
I we've done a good rendition Virginia Hills together on
multiple occasions, and Jason heaper House down no matter whether
it's acting or stage. I'd call him a classic triple.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
That's a hell of a compliment, all right. But so
that that said, that said, we are off the draft.
I mean, no one was drafting me any I don't
have any I don't play an instrument. I can't act
that I'm aware of. And uh, I mean the only
thing I really do is is talk a lot about sports.
So unless you needed one of those for your like,
is that that was a positional need for you. I'm sorry,
but you can't. You can't draft someone who talks a

(01:30):
lot about sports.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
It kind of feels like you've made this rule, Alex.
Just just eminate the possibility of you being picked for kickball, you.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Figured it out man.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Hees he figured he's playing four chess.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
I mean it would have been, it would have been
I could. I could have drafted both of you, and
then I'd be like, oh, well what am I going
to do about me? All right? Here we go? Uh
So the rules are the rules are as such. We
the Aristotle and I actually did a supergroup draft. Man,
it feels like a lifetime ago. I'm not gonna go
over those again. I do remember they were they were
pretty funky, they were pretty cool. But that was a

(02:05):
that was a generic super group when we were specifically
building a band. This can be kind of anything. This
is gonna be just a super super draft of West Virginians,
of you know, all the West Virginians that we love
in the history of this fine state.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
And it was this was Jason's idea. I love this, uh,
or maybe it was Aristotle's idea. But one of you
basically said, oh, we could stick so and so on
the drums, even though she's never played drums before. And
I think that is perfect at the at the at
the very end, you have to tell us. You have
to tell us where she fits in your supergroup or
he what is their job? What is their job? That's

(02:41):
that's the that's the important part. You can draft them
to fill whatever position. So you know, whenever we go
to the NFL draft and and a quarterback, who got
guy who plays quarterback all his career gets drafted as
a wide receiver. It's just like that. If you're drafting, uh,
if you're drafting someone not to do what they typically do,
but to play drums, you got to tell us that.
So those are those are the only rules. Outside of that.

(03:02):
I'll keep a I have a I have a timing device.
Hold on, wait, this is nifty because we're we're doing
this on Zoom today partially because of this exact reason.
Let me let me find this thing. This thing is nifty.
I've only ever had to use this before, guys. I've
only ever had to use this before with my sports
guys when we do the Friday free for all, because

(03:23):
we we are so long winded that I have to
have this on to make sure they know how much
time is left in our in our segment. But in
this case, this is this is a draft timer. So
this is how much time you get on the clock.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
And this is.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
A sample here. I know our listeners can't see this,
but they're gonna have to imagine there's this big green
countdown clock with one minute on it starting and it
started now. And this is just the sample version. But
so here's the here's the big I I have established.
Here's the way this is. This is gonna go. Uh,
we are gonna go with the We're gonna go with

(03:58):
the longest ten West Virginian drafting first, all right, longest
ten yards, so longest amount of time living with your
primary residence in the state of West Virginia. So go ahead,
throw that out there, and that'll determine. I have a
feeling i'm gonna be drafting last. But it's snake style,
so that's okay. I have lived in West Virginia for

(04:21):
eighteen years.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
I have lived in West Virginia for forty two years.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
I have you been. I've lived in West Virginia for
forty six years, forty five. You know, actuep adding the
year to my age is weird. I'm just like trying
to take a head dive into middle age.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I think I'm just all right. So on that note,
the draft is decided. It's Aristotle, Jason, then me, and
we'll snake it back around every time.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Let's do.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
We're gonna we're gonna do four rounds, okay, so you
gotta have four West Virginians all right, Okay, I'm gonna
add thirty seconds to your clock. All right, Aristotle, you
are officially on the clock for our West Virginia Super
Group All Inclusive Draft of twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
All right, I'm gonna start off with Bill Withers, gonna
get with a funky Groove're gonna hit the pocket. You know,
I think bis can play any slot, So I think
he would be a member of the team to draft.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
I had a feeling he was going to be an
easy first round pick. I wasn't sure about first overall,
but there it is, Jason Young, you were on the clock.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah, I so. I also had Withers as my number one,
hoping that I was going to get the first pick, right,
so my pick now. And I don't know if I
did enough or too much research in preparation for this,
but knowing that Aristotle was was going to be on

(05:49):
this call, I felt like, Oh, I gotta I gotta
be partially prepared. I think I'm gonna go to now.
Oh wait, let me yeah, no, never. Bill Withers is
no longer with us, so it can be anybody from
any time. I'm going Johnny Johnson, Johnny Johnson, snag Johnny

(06:09):
be Good, Johnny be Good, the blues ja man from Fairmont,
and I'm gonna have him on vocals and piano.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Obviously that's gonna be a better pick than Johnny Manziel.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
I just want you guys to know that my draft is,
my draft board is in shambles right now. So thanks
for so. I I'm changing up my whole strategy now.
I am now no longer building a music group. Or
maybe I am. Maybe I am, But so I got
I've got two picks here, and I figure it's time
to get get a little ahead.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Here.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
I'm gonna do something a little different and see if
I can, if I can figure this out at the
very end. So first I'm gonna draft Jennifer Garner, a
list actress. Okay, all right, Now, here's where it's gonna
get He's where it's gonna get interesting. Because this is
why I'm not sure it's a music group. With my
second pick to start the second round, I am drafting

(06:59):
from Morgantown High School, the writer of such hints as
The Empire Strikes Back and Indiana Jones. Lawrence Kasden had
to be done. I don't know what kind of music
they're gonna play, But I'm not I'm not, I'm not yet.
I have I have a thought on where this is going.

(07:20):
I have a thought on where this is going. And
I will I will, I will tell you at the
end and and and I'm swerving, but maybe I'll have
a chance at winning. So with that, Aristotle, you are
on the clock. Jason is on the clock. I'm I'm
bad at this. I'm multitasking, writing down the picks and everything. Jason,

(07:41):
you're on the clock.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yes I am.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
I let me see if I can find my guys here.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
I learned today that oh no, wait, I gotta find it. Okay,
so you know, prepps to edit me.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Uh oh no, keep it real, You keep it real.
People gotta hear the thought prom They need to know
how you're working out yourself.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
So in my research today, I'm actually gonna cheat obviously. Uh.
And I'm gonna draft two people in in this one slot.
But it's a it's a duo, so they come together,
they come together or or they're so uh. And I
learned in my research today, So I'm drafting and these
are gonna be guitar and some backup vocals because remember

(08:34):
I got I got Johnny be Good on the piano
and the lead out there. These guys back him up.
Maybe one will play drums and singing the o Alvin
Simon and Fuzzy Haskins. Okay, these guys are both from
West Virginia and they co founded the group Parliament Funkadelic.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
Wow, I love it.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
That's a good group. Yeah, and I knew that the
co founders were for West Virginia, but I just had
to make sure I got their names right.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Am I supposed to compe am, I supposed to compete
with this? This is unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Goods money Johnson with the founders of Parliament Funkadelic. That's right.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Wait, wait, so not only did Jason find a way
to cheat, but you find a way to cheat legally essentially.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
That's hey, Look, that's is create. You know it's created.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
All right, there's a minute back on the clock, Aristotle,
you have so you really have two minutes. You got
two minutes here yet, back to Billy. Pick two people
or you can pull ad Jason and find a way
to pick four people.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Oh okay, I see, I see. Well. You know, when
I'm thinking about this next pick, I want to make
sure I locked down somebody that I admired that is
alive and is an in West Virginia performance. I'm gonna
take Bob Thompson, pianists for Mountain State on piano. I

(09:56):
think he's gonna not lock it down. Do a lot.
It's played with many, many people over an expand of career.
And so for my next pick, I'm gonna throw a
curve in it because I'm gonna take somebody who's had
a big influence on culture.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
All right, Wait, wait, wait, wait, before you do it,
let me just give the folks a quick recap. So
here's where we are, because we're midway through the draft now.
So the draft has gone like this. It has gone
Bill Withers first overall to Aristotle. All right, So Bill
Withers first overall pick to Aristotle. Jason Young's second went
Johnny Johnson, who he's planning on putting on piano. Third

(10:31):
overall pick to and the first round was the famed
actress Jennifer Garner. The fourth overall pick to start the
second round was screenwriter of Indiana Jones and Star Wars
Lawrence Cosden, who went to Morgantown High School. With the
fifth overall pick, Jason threw us all for a curve
and went with Alvin Simon and Fuzzy Haskins of Parliament, Funkadelic,
and Aristotle just selected Bob Thompson to bring us to

(10:54):
the midway point of the draft. And so my only
job as MC is now to say, Stotle, you were
on the clock for the third round.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
It's so good. You're such a good sports man. You
had the sports you know.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
I love a recap man when when something's not happening
on the field. Let me tell you something. The recap
is your best friend. That's why. That's why I know it.
I know it.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
It's time you got it. So so I'm going to
take a curveball here and elevated culture leader and a
thought leader as manager of the band. And I'm going
with Kerti Washington, who is you know, a black thought
culture leader founded in the Tuskegee Institute. Now, I was

(11:39):
a native West Virginian who grew up in Malden, West
and before you relocate it. And he's going to be
the manager of the band.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Nice woice.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
I feel like you don't. You don't think being the
manager of the band is a little beneath him. You
almost have to make it like like just make him
head of the studio, maybe, like you start your own
music studio for West Virginians. Right, And he's like he
needs a he almost needs a bigger job. He almost
needs a bigger job.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Well, you know, I'm sure he'll find a good job.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Jason Young is now up for the middle pick of
the third round, and Jason are you building You're building
a band, right, You're building? This is gonna be music and.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Building a band?

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Uh And so you know I've got I've got John
Johnson and and and you know piano player singer uh
and and think about right his his career, jazz, blues,
rock and roll, got it all. I got the guys Funkadelics.
So it's so it's a really really kind of funky group.
And I'm gonna come out of left field here a

(12:44):
little bit, I think, because I want my questioning a
super group to have a fusion feel. So I'm gonna
insert a musician that doesn't fit in jazz blues, rock
and roll funkadelic world. But I'm gonna insert a musician
that I think can play anything. And I know this
guy is a friend of Aristotle, so he'll understand where

(13:06):
I'm going. My next pick is Philip Bowen. Philip take
his fiddle into the band and he'll he'll he'll elevate
that into a brand new genre of music.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Great selection, wow wow, Okay, all right, so these are
my last two picks.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
I've been thinking hard about this because I I on
the one hand, I I there's a there's a person
who has not yet been picked who I've been really
thinking about. Uh in this, what's that? Yeah, I I
he's going to start our Traveling Actors Group here, he's
going to join our that's the plan that you got me?

(13:55):
You got me?

Speaker 3 (13:56):
No, no, no.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
So I'm I'm going a little I'm going a little
off book here. I'm going a little off book here.
All right, So I'm taking I'm gonna take. With my
next pick, I'm gonna go Sierra Ferrell.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Okay, ooh good, great choice.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
And and this could be a real risk because when
you hear what I'm doing at the end, when we
get to the end and we decide how this is
going to look, this could be a real risk. But
all right, so I'm taking Sierra Ferrell. And then with
my final pick, I'm gonna take Kathy Matteia.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Ooh, slam dunk. Okay, you got star power a list,
star power, star power.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
I'm gonna tell you, guys, they are not gonna It's
not a band. It's not a band. That's what That's
the only thing I'll say right now. Jason Young, you
were on the clock with your final pick.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
All right, this one I gotta do some educate. I
will tell you the coolest part of this is I
felt like I knew West Virginia musicians right Like I
felt like I knew I didn't think I had the
knowledge Aristotle did, but I felt like I knew a
bunch of them. But I actually learned about a new
musician and getting ready for this. And this is my
final pick. And this is a guy that is actually

(15:03):
from Ohio, but he grew up most of his life
in Hinton and in Charleston. We just lost him in
twenty three. And this is my drummer. This is my
drummer and to the to the to the heart of
the rhythm section to keep the band together. His name
is Butch Miles. You know that name, Aristotle. This guy
was a drummer for the Count Basie Orchestra.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Oh great choice. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
He's a big band. Yeah, which means he's got a
great feel and he can hold it. He can hold
it all, he can hold it all together. So that's
that's my.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
Final game to play it.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Oh yes, yeah, I was intimidated.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
I was dated by y'all. I wanted to be the
dark horse.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
I love how you dropped the Count Basie bands that
used to come on the steamships and go down through
the Canal River Valley, and it was a big thing
before they brought the interstate through. So that's a good fine. Yeah,
But Miles, but Miles.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
All right, Aristotle, you have all right, all right, Well,
my last I hate to phrase it this way. You
have mister irrelevant here.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Mister irrelevant. Well, mister, see, I went back and forth,
and I want to be able to give my honorable mention.
I'm gonna give my honorable mention real quick. Diamond teeth Mary,
because I wanted to add a little bit of bling
to the scene, and she was an early blues pioneer
in the twenties and thirties. But well, I'm going with

(16:26):
the legend, the man, the myth, the legend, the engine
on drums, the the powerhouse who would not let know
still beat him down, No down, mister John Henry. Go
with John Henry, and he's your drummer, He's my drummer.

(16:47):
So I got Bill Withers, I got Bob Thompson and
John Henry and they are just going to go to
town in some amazing apple Chian porch picking. It's gonna
be great.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Okay, all right, let me turn the clock off here,
and I'm here's what I'm gonna say now that we've
reached and that we've reached this portion of it.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
All right.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
So so Aristotle, you've got some some some apple Acchian
porch picking. Is there anybody else that you would want
to add? If you could, if you had one more pick,
you could add one more person to your Appleachian porch picking?

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Who's joining Alex Swedishviiell?

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (17:19):
Every I I to want to watch? That was really good?
That was That was really good, mister with.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
If I were to add one more, it would be
my neighbor Al Anderson. He's got he's a rock and
soul singer. He's a local guy, but man, he's a
little hero. He's got eighties or he's eighty eight, so
he's got forty sings in the biz. He's saying with
Billy Warden the Dominoes out California, and he's, uh, just
one of those guys said, if you're around him, he's

(17:49):
gonna fill you. And I just think he would probably
be a he should be up with those other names
I mentioned. That's how cool he is.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
That's an incredible. So that one, like one more time
before I go to Jason, it was Bill wither Is,
Bob Thompson, Booker T. Washington, John Henry and if you
could pick one more, it'd be Al Anderson, your neighbor.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Al Anderson. That's right, the sole the original soul man.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
All right.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
So and so you're just you're just they're not even
you're not even booking them a tour. They're just getting
up on the porch and they're just they're just playing.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
Oh well, Booker t washing and that was his whole philosophy,
was to put down your buckets where you're at. So
they're just gonna start saying people are gonna show up.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Okay, I love it. I love it. The porch picking
got a five set band here, and now we've got.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Jason juke joint too.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Man, what are we assembled? What are we assembling with
our West Virginians?

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Jason, Oh, we're assembling a rock and Appalachian rock and
soul fusion group. Go, that's that's my genre, apple Achian
rock and soul fusion. And Johnny Johnson and my two
guys from the Parliament Funk Deck Plush, Philip Bowen and

(18:59):
and Butch Miles.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Right, yes, because you're do you have an undrafted free
agent that you'd want to add just.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
So yeah, here here's the deal. The guy who fits
in an Appalachian rock and soul fusion group is Aristotle
j It was odd Man not to be in it.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
But you said Jason's pushing the rules again because I
didn't say that you couldn't sign him as an undrafted
free agent. I just said you.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
Can't draft man. My back plan was actually to add another.
Uh so, if I've got Johnny on piano, maybe somebody
who could play a little Hammond B three organ or
a second set of keys or something. And I was thinking, Michael, w.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
Oh, yeah, that would be great.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
There's so many it's hard with four.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
I know that's a big sound. That's a sound. That's good.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
All right, apple Achian rock and roll soul fusion group.
I love that.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
No, no, no, rock and soul. You gotta twist the name
rock and soul, rocking.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Soul future, all right, all right, I love it. That's where,
by the way, the listeners, we're gonna put this out
there to see who won, because I don't know, I
don't know how else.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
To Paisley on your team, Alex.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Oh no, no, no, no no. Well well maybe maybe
for the money, but I've already got that covered. So
here's the deal. Here's here's the deal. Here's what we're doing.
Here's what we're doing. So we are we are. Lawrence
Kasden is going to write and direct a biopic about
Kathy Mattea, which, of course she will be on consulting

(20:40):
as because how else could we do with Kathy Mateya
biopick unless she's on board. Jennifer Garner is gonna be
the money. She's also gonna star in it, not as
Kathy Matteya. We'll find a role for her, but the
key is she's producing it, and Sierra Ferrell, in her
acting debut, will play Kathy Matteya.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
I love it. That's really good and all right, all right,
so it can be like k pop, you know, the
the what's the Netflix show, Keith Out Vampire or whatever?

Speaker 2 (21:10):
The wait wait here here, I'm gona. I'm gonna pull
a g here. I'm going for two unsigned free agents.
The first is I'm bringing in West Virginian Brad Durroffe.
We're gonna find a role for him. I don't know
what yet, but Brad maybe maybe maybe maybe.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
The guy that was in Northern Exposure.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
No, actually, I don't you know, that's a good quite.
Brad Durff is is from many, many things. He was
in the original Dune, and he was in Lord of
the Rings, and he was in uh one Flew Over
the Cuckoo's Nest. Very very accomplished actor, one of the
best character actors in my opinion of all time. But
so Brad Durffe is coming in in some because it's
a West Virginia thing, you gotta have Brad. I'm pretty
sure he's from Huntington, West Virginia, and because I know

(21:47):
he's an accomplished actor of stage in film. Jason Young
is gonna have to have a role in this movie.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
Yes, yes, Hey, did you see him in a Piece
of the Seven Fishes?

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, actually, he's gonna play the same part. He's actually
gonna play the same part.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
He's it's gonna be like the Jason Young universe, Yeah,
exact universe. Did you know they took place in the
same that'd be great. You were excellent, by the way, Jason.
I'm just that's why.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
It's a it's an easy it's a home run for us.
It's it's it's an easy win, local talent. It's which,
it's it's how we're gonna pull this off.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
I think we have funding already. Somebody just heard that idea.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Check your banking well, hopefully Jennifer Garner. Hopefully Jennifer Garner
heard that idea. It is going to make exactly exactly
I mean, I mean, she should be. She's in one
of my all time favorite television programs, Party Down. So Jennifer,
we're on the same wavelength here. We're on the same wavelength, guys.
I mean, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna I'll
put this in the in the description in the podcast,

(22:47):
and I will also uh put it on Facebook and
we can let people decide. But I will also remind
folks that whether you want to comment on Facebook or
you just want to email the show, it's The Morning
Spiel at gmail dot com. I know my name is
hard to spell. S p i e L. There's no
h s p i e l. The Morning Spiel at
gmail dot com. And you have to decide who made

(23:09):
West Virginia the most proud? Is it our porch picking
five group or five set piece from Aristotle. Is it
our rock and soul Appleachian. I'm gonna get this wrong again, Jason,
say it one more time.
