(00:09):
Welcome back to the next one hundred. It's me Molly, and I owe
you an apology because I promise tobe super consistent with this show, and
I am in day late, maybeeven two, who knows. At this
point it's Harry carry over here, but I'm here. I'm showing up,
and I got a reason why I'mlate, and it's because my best friend
is visiting. But that's still abullshit excuse. So, without any further
(00:31):
hesitation, lest you jump right onin to today's podcast. So you're gonna
think that I work for sure afterthe next two episodes, and I swear
that I don't. However, Ihave been a huge fan of Shore.
They have definitely hooked me up withsome equipment. Lord Davidson is super amazing
from Shore. Yeah, I mean, I can't say enough good things about
(00:51):
them, but I swear to GodI don't work for them and they don't
pay me. So just FYI,But the next two podcast episodes I'm going
to devote straight to the quality ofyour sound, and so we're going to
talk about two different pieces of equipment. And so today's episode is going to
be all about the Shore MV seven. So you know, I get really
(01:15):
worked up when I talk about peoplenot having microphone. So I'm trying to
be a zen as possible and justbe like, it's cool, man,
it's cool. But the thing is, it's not cool. It's not cool
if you spend listen. If youwork for a company and you're just showing
up for meetings and stuff, Iget it, you don't want to buy
a microphone, but you're probably notlistening to this podcast. If you are
going on other people's podcast, ifyou're in sales, even in any way,
(01:38):
shape or form, you should absolutelyhave a microphone. And the reason
why is your voice just sounds better. You know, ask Anthony. If
you've worked with the company at all, you know how great Anthony sounds.
When you get on those meetings withhim, everyone comments, I think I
need to put my mic higher upin the shot so people can see my
(01:59):
microphone, because he always gets allof the compliments. But the short MB
seven is such a great microphone. It's almost full proof. You plug it
into the side of your computer. You can download an app to dial in
the settings. It works super welleven if your mic control isn't great.
And so let's talk about mic controlfirst and foremost. So the biggest thing
(02:21):
that I see is nobody knows howto use their microphone. And I blame
stock photos for this because when yousearch stock photos for podcasting or microphone,
there is no shortage of images thatshow people using their microphones the wrong way,
literally talking into the wrong side ofit, talking into the end that
has a metal band around it,talking into the side of it. So
(02:42):
all the you know, I mean, just you see it all I saw
on LinkedIn and lady had her microphoneliterally behind her head like it was like
it was a decoration. And soI just really wants you guys to think
about, you know, how youhave seen microphones being used in the past,
and maybe you've watched too much JohnnyCarson or David Letterman or I don't
(03:05):
know who the new guys are.I'm aging myself with that one. But
yet that yes, there is amicrophone on the desk far away, but
that was just the proper people. That was not actually the microphone that those
people use. They're using the pelmics. You you can't use a microphone
from a foot away. Now,if you guys have ever watched the show
Billions, you ever watched that showI love that show for so many reasons,
(03:25):
But the thing that caught my ear, if you will, first and
foremost, was the sound. Ifyou have a chance like turn that show
on and really listen to the sound, it is impeccable. But if you
understood the level of micing that goeson to capture that kind of sound,
you would be bewildered. So maybeyou're thinking, oh, you know,
(03:46):
the boom arms are super far awayfrom people, it catches their sound.
Listen, boom arms in Hollywood alsohave the pel mics and other There's so
many microphones that you don't even seein those shots. So that's not how
mic your phone's work. So I'llgive you another example. You've ever been
in an event like a panel discussionand there's a Q and A and somebody
(04:08):
in the back you know, standsup and they get the microphone and they
hold it away and they go,yeah, I'd like to know about that,
And everybody goes put the microphone, close it to your face, right,
your podcast microphone, your microphone inyour desk is the same thing.
Help me, and ain't working forthree three feet away. You need to
pull it, you need to pullit closer. To your face. It
needs to be really close to yourface. Okay, So the first thing
(04:31):
you want to do is not byone of those pop filters. If you
have a foam cover. Here's anothergem. Here's another gem. If you
have a foam cover on your microphone, you do not need a pop filter.
Okay, you do. This isyour pop filter. It functions the
same as one of those big roundthings that has a screen in it that
covers your face. It's called apop filter. Those things are the biggest
(04:55):
trick that consumerism ever played on anybodythere, filling up land to the across
the world. Those things, Ihate them. Right. The only time
that those are relevant if you're usinga microphone that doesn't have those like a
foam cover on it. But evenlike the more high end microphones are going
to have like built in stuff anda foam cover under the metal that you
might not see. So honestly, don't get a pop filter. That's the
(05:18):
first thing, number you know. No, that's number two. Number one,
keep the microphone really close to yourface. The way that you can
do that is with a boom armlike this. It's a really great way
to get it done. I'll takemy earbuds off, so you can see
it a little bit better, superfunctional. You can bring it right to
your face hands free. I canstill talk, I can still make crazy
hand gestures, right, you know, I'm free to move about the cabin,
(05:41):
but I'm keeping the microphone really closeto my face, okay, And
if I move to the microphone,So a lot of times people think that
their microphone is working because you canhear their voice, but that's not how
sound works. So for example,if I was the move away from this
microphone, right and I keep talking, sure you can still hear me,
but you're actually hearing the sound ofmy voice bouncing off the walls, and
(06:04):
like generally everyone's while passing in frontof this microphone. So, yeah,
you can hear me. Does itsound good? Does it sound any better
if I wasn't using a microphone atall? Probably not? Now when I
get closer to the microphone, doesthat sound better? Does that make you
want to listen to me a littlebit more? Right? So? And
(06:24):
the real pros they have excellent miccontrol and there's no plosives, and they're
right up on this thing sounding likethe voice of God. Right, I
don't even know what that means honestly, but you really want to keep the
microphone closer to your face. Thesecond thing is get a boom arm,
get the thing off your desk. And the third thing is get some earbuds
(06:44):
so that when you're an interview, the other person's sound isn't coming through your
speakers and bleeding into your microphone. That's why you need to wear earbuds.
People, Very simple earbuds. Nomic, that's just a little volume.
Nob no mic, just simple earbuds. Lo pro, can't even see him,
gang gang. All right, that'syour setup. Now, lots of
mics you can buy. You canbuy the Yeti. Please feel the level
(07:06):
of God, do not buy theYeti microphone and doing a quick and dirty
tutorial on why that is. Sopeople get all up on in arms when
I talk shit about the Yeti,but I don't care because it's not a
good microphone. Actually it's I correctmyself. It is a great microphone if
you are in a treated space. So the Yeti microphone is a condenser microphone,
(07:28):
so it's pickup pattern is circular. And yes there's an adjustment that you
can use front and back and allthis. But the problem is you don't
understand what the front and the backof the actual microphone is, and most
of you talking to the top ofit anyway, which completely pointless. There's
nothing there but the YETI is goingto pick up all these noises around you,
your neighbors, you know, leafblow or whatever, the lawnmower.
(07:49):
It's going to pick up all thesenoises where a dynamic microphone has a very
specific pickup pattern. So this microphoneis for example, it's pickup area is
at the very end of this microphoneright here, just this little tip right.
So people that have this microphone andtalking to the side of it,
yeah, you're still getting good sound, but not great because what this has
is excellent rejection, right like meon tender right, it's got excellent rejection.
(08:15):
What does that mean. It meansthat when you are not talking into
where the pickup pattern is, it'snaturally going to lower your voice as you
hear the sound. The quality ofthe sound of my voice as I'm moving
around talking into the side of it. You see, you can still hear
me, but isn't as good aswhen I'm right here, right, So
using your microphone the right way issuper important. The short MB seven takes
(08:39):
all of that out because of thepickup pattern is right here. It's not
a condenser microphone. It's XLR andUSB, so that means you can plug
it right into your computer and it'llwork and you don't need an audio interface
to make the thing work. Allin from Podcast outfit Or is a huge
(09:00):
out of them small business in Marylandthat's been there for sixty years. They
used to be on Eighth Street inNortheast DC and their store got burned down
in the riots of nineteen sixty eightand they reopened in Maryland and they've been
there ever since. And if yougrew up in DC or Maryland or Virginia
and you ever ay what's up?Literally, if you ever played a my
dog just walked in the room forthe audio audience. But if you ever
(09:20):
if you played an instrument and yougrew up in DC, Maryland, Virginia,
you probably bought that instrument from ChuckLevin's Music Center. And they are
the god the parent company of PodcastOutfitters. Great service, small company,
great shipping, and they have techsport. You can call him up if
you have any questions, z amsoand gon't give you that. I promise
that, so shout out to PodcastOutfitters, but they got a bundle on
(09:43):
there for three fifty. You canget all these things delivered to you all
in and if you put TPC tenyou'll get ten percent off your order because
of me. Just told him, tell them I sent you. But here's
the deal. It's a great microphone. And why am I advocating for this?
There's ton So you could also getthe SM seven B, but you're
gonna need an audio interface and you'regonna need a cloudlifter, and if you're
(10:03):
not technical, that's not really it. The SM seven B is like the
Mike Joe Rogan uses. This isbasically the same technology, just made easier
to use. It's slightly less capabilities, but it's USB and XLR. So
for the people who are curious aboutthat, what that means is you can
plug it into your computer, oryou can plug it into an audio interface.
(10:24):
So if you buy this computer, you could be at home or anywhere
with your laptop and you can recordthings. But if you were to be
in a podcast studio or do apodcast with more than one person, you
could plug this into the audio interfacewith a traditional XLR chord and it would
work that way as well. Soit's a really super functional dual purpose microphone.
(10:46):
Can't say enough good things about it. Highly recommend and it really does
make a difference because you know I'vementioned this before, but if you're looking
to go on other people's podcasts,or you're doing any sort of speaking engagements
or presentations or any stuff like that, like you best believe checking your setup.
That's why most people have you likerecord a video and show like you're
setup in your sound and all that. People are spending a ton of money
(11:07):
to produce their podcasts and they're notgonna pick you or these events, and
they're not gonna pick you if yousound like you're broadcasting from a tunican.
So it's really important that you havegood sound and you're putting effort into it,
and the shore MB seven makes thatsuper easy. There are other mics
are twenty, there's so many othermics on the market, and yeah,
you could go to Amazon and buya cheap microphone, but you're just gonna
(11:28):
end up replacing it because it's gonnasuck and it's probably not gonna work because
it's like cheap parts and those thingsare designed literally to fail. So you
know, and yet he's not cheapeither. People. Oh man, you
guys are experiencing a real Costa Ricarainstorm just came in out of nowhere.
So I'm gonna make the rest ofthis show short and sweet because I feel
(11:48):
like I've made my point here. But I hope you all get to shelter
soon and go out and get youashore MV seven. It's the best microphone
on the market. Can't say enoughgood things. I'll put the link to
the podcast Outfitters Bundle in the descriptionbelow and hit me up, man,
send me a message, let meknow how you know. How you like
(12:09):
the microphone. Yeah, man,if you're gonna go on People's podcast,
you gotta have a mic. Ifyou have your own podcast, you absolutely
have to have a mic. Ifyou do any sort of presentations whatsoever,
gotta have a mic. And ifyou do sales, you gotta have a
mic. So on that note,go get a microphone. Hit me up,
let me know that you got theshort MB seven and send me a
little clip and suddenly, how gidyou sound? And I'll see you next
