"Hello there, this is the Family Doctor...."

Join us as we travel back in time to a small town where Doctor Grant Adams dispenses medicinee for the body and common sense advice for the soul in this little-known family drama series from the 1930s.

In this first episode, a teenage girl becomes the subject of gossip after some church money turns up missing. Can Doc Adams prevent a tragedy?

Potential series air dates for the series vary from 1932-38. The earliest I can find a record of the series being aired was in the Fall of 1937.

Pardon me, are you Adam Graham? The very same? And this is
my old time radio snack Wagon.Welcome to the Old Time Radio Snackwagon,
where we serve up a bite sizedportion of old time radio. And now

(00:22):
here's your snackwagon host, Adam Graham. Welcome once again to the Old Time
Radio snack Wagon. In our firsttwo episodes, we featured programs that starred
well known performers in well documented productions. It's not always going to be that
way here on the Snackwagon, becausethere are some really interesting tidbits of old

(00:46):
time radio that people don't know awhole lot about, and that's certainly true
of today's program. Family Doctor isa program that various old time radio sources
will list as having originally been broadcastin nineteen thirty two, and others will
say in nineteen thirty eight. Iopened up some newspaper archives, and the

(01:12):
earliest example of an episode of thisseries that I could find aired in nineteen
thirty seven. These were produced bythe Transcription Corporation of America, better known
as Transcoe. While they stayed inbusiness until the fifties, they were probably
at their hot in the nineteen thirties, producing transcribed dramatic serials and music programs

(01:38):
and sending them out to client radiostations across the United States. The Family
Doctor was different from many others dramaticserials as it was really quite episodic right
up until the last three or fourepisode. So now let's go ahead and
play episode one, false witness.Hello there, this is a Family Doctor.

(03:37):
You will be all right, Hank. Just you keep away from hornerts
after this. Don't you worry noneabout that, Doc, Hank, sure
will just make sure they're honey besteadof hornets. Thank you, doctor.
He's hearing mud you slapped on theface and hands. Sure seems to help
a heap. You drop around tomorrowafternoon about four thirty, Hanking, we'll

(03:58):
have another look at you. Soalong dark how much? Oh oh there,
Maddie, Adam, morning Maddie.Next time you I think I am,
I should be. I've been waitinglong enough. Come on, sit
down in that big chair, Hank, Hazn's had little trouble with his bees.

(04:18):
He don't see as good as heused to pears to me, is
how he'd see better if he wantsthe vein verily. Every man at his
best tag is altogether vanity, Caesar, that's what the Good book saying.
Doesn't say nothing, the moount ofthe women, nothing that passage, It
don't vain. How do you figureout the tanks? Vein Mattie? Well,

(04:39):
he won't wear them spectacles, thegold rimmed ones that you sent away
for him for says folks, Ithink he's getting deep crepid. Why it's
getting so he can't even read thecourt records. Hey, you and Hank
had another fallen out? Would itbe here? That's harps to say this
and nobody else is here. I'mnot dry, absolutely correct. Well,
Maddie, what's the trouble this time? Doctor Adams? That misery's come back?

(05:01):
And my neck and shoulder again?Just what you told me? Have
a lemon and hot water in themorning, an apple and some cell ret
noon, and eat and potatoes justonce a day, that's all and nothing
more, nothing more. Well,I didn't go to the Sociable last Wednesday.
Of course I had to enter intothe festivities like well, they had

(05:24):
some of missus Phillips's lemon curry andsome of Missus Rankin's splendid watermelon pickles,
and some of missus Mason's Fresh homemadestrawberry ice cream, And of course I
took one of my angel food cakeswith the boyd ice. And you know,
doctor Adams, the kind you likethe well know what you see,
Maddie. I don't have any miseryin my neck and shoulder. No,

(05:46):
maddie'clock. That's the trouble of youand people like you. You get something
the matter with you, then youexpect the doctor to pick you up all
by himself. Gush, ye fright. He can't do it, Maddie.
Why are the human system just likethat automobile of mine setting up there in
Maple Street. I've been driving thatautomobile for six years and it's as good
today as it was a day aboutit? Why because I don't go out

(06:08):
and put a lot of coal, oil and ether in the gas tank just
because I think it'll it'll be enteringend of the festivities like no, sirry
Bob, And you can't do itwith the human system neither. Give you
some of these pellets, and thenyou stop into the drug store on your
way home and get feet made togive you some more of that same lineament.
And then, Mattie Clark, yousee that you stay with that diet

(06:29):
list. I gave you all right, Doctor Adams, but oh look she
can judge day, so startling aboutthat Doctor Adams into her? Why it's
all over town. It's wept fittin, just like the gales of Galilee Clark,
what are you talking about? Youknow, Kate Winds is the treasurer
of a Sunday school class, thedaughters of Naomi. I heard about that.

(06:54):
They were all getting ready for theclass picnic next head of the up
to Miller's Lake. And what doyou think I can't the money's disappeared.
Yes, all the clock funds hasjust been swept off the face of the
earth, so to speak. AndI'd want to carry tale, Oh of
course not. But just at thesame time, Faith Winday came out with
a brand new pink Organdy. Shewore to the sociable last Winday. Sam

(07:17):
Winds are enough money to buy hisdaughter in new dress if he wants to,
of course, if he wants toa preddy Maddie Clark, what are
you trying to say, light one? Are you trying to say that little
Faith Windsor stole that money? Idon't know that she did, but it
looks a mighty suspicious to me.She had the money to a house,
didn't she. The money disappears inthe face of the earth, didn't this
and then she comes out with anew organ day. True, you're lying

(07:41):
this gard you know with you thatstarted all this terrible talk about me,
and not one bit of it's true. Do you hear? Not one bit
of it? You know, Ididn't see that money, But you've got
everybody who seater and thinking I didn't. Someday I'm gonna prove I didn't do
it, even and well, Inever what's this younger generation to come into

(08:07):
talking to the elders life we withdumb animals. I think i'd better be
getting down to the drug store.Do I delay? But not that liniment
is your pellets? Maddie, Ohyes, of course, thank you,
doctor Adams. I'm post forgotten.Well, Good day, doctor Adam.
Good day, Maddie. I hopeyour misery is better the one in your

(08:28):
neck and shoulders. I mean, thank you kindly, good day, not
wonder carry tales, gush to Friday. Oh dog, oh hello, Judge

(09:05):

bears. Right. You haven't seenyour daughter lately in last hour or so,
have you? Sam? Faith No? Why? Well, well,
she h she was coming over forher Pennyroyal. I think she and the

(09:48):
daughters of Nailbi was to have apicnic next Saturday. I understand and said
something about the mesquite has been prettybad right now Miller's Lake. Oh well,
no, I haven't seen her.Very hard and eyes cold and a
nickel a glass? Thanks, Pete, Well, Dot here's how hell yeah?
Yeah? Thanks? You want anythingelse, Judge? And my telephone's

(10:09):

your diamon. Thanks. The girlsought to have a fine time on their
shindig. Beautiful place, Miller's LakeBeautiful. Been thinking about buying some property
up there. Think it will doubleand value in the next five years.
Oh, Judge, it's for you, missus Wendesday. Oh thanks, Pete,

(10:31):
you're right back. Duck. It'smy wife. Probably forgot to tell
me to bring home a watermelon. It's been busy, lightly dark. No,
no, no, people in Sedartonthey're all pretty healthy, too healthy
for you and me. Eh,Doc, Of course I didn't mean that,
Duck. Doc, You've got tocome up to the house with me

(10:52):

the corner. Good morning, Judge, come on Buck, please hurry morning.
Peter. What's the trouble up thewinters? Will? Nah, that's
too bad. What is it?Pete? What is it? Oh?
Missus Windsor just phoned to Judge andtold him face all of sick. That's

(11:13):
sake, all of a sudden, she said, heat sake, Well,
all of a sudden. I wonderwhat could be the trouble? Yeah?

(11:37):
Ah, that mustard and water andthat fight of egg did the trick.
Now you'll be all right, face, Faith, Funny your mother phound it?
What your mother phoned? The moneyshe did? I'm glad there now,
Faith, Now you're going to beall sure. She is the writer's

(12:00):
right, and she's going to havethe best time on that picnic that any
girls ever had anywhere. You don'tmind telling where missus windsor found the money,
do you, Sam? No,I don't mind. Young Sam Junior
took it. He were just playinga prank on you, Faith, just
like a younger brother. He andsome of the other boys decided it would

(12:22):
be fun to hide those funds,so Faith and the girls couldn't go to
their picnic. Ah, I see. And then when they found out what
people around town were saying about Faith, they were scared to give it back.
But just as soon as I canget around to it, I've got
a prank. I'm going to playon him with a hair brush. Well,
Faith, I'll rup around again thisevening, just to see how you're

(12:45):
getting along, to fix you upso as you can eat anything you want
to on that picnic, you findyour way out by yourself. Dark.
Yes, after eighteen years are comingaround here. I should well we meet

(13:11):
again, doctor Adams. Oh,yes, Maddie, we meet again,
small world, doctor Adams. Iheard the Faith was ailing. Yeah,
she was all right? Now anythingserious might have been she ate some rat
poison gad Boyson. Yep. Shefelt so bad about the gossip that was
going on around town. You knowabout the money. Oh, yes,

(13:31):
the money. They found it though, they did, But where was it?
Young Sammy? Had it hid justas a joke. Oh, I'm
so glad they found it. I'mglad to do the faiths are feeling better.
Yeah, if you don't mind mysaying so, Mattie, I think
you should be glad. Well, after all, doctor Adams, I was
just trying to do my duties.I saw it duty. That's all.

(13:54):
The scripture says that shall not stealthan she. Yes, yes, that's
the it's commandment. If I remember, i'd lay the eighth commandment. Let
me see, do you recollect theninth commandment, Maddie. I just don't
seem to recall it for a minute. The ninth but oh, yes,
I remember it. It says thoushalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

(14:18):
Yes, that's right, false witness, Doctor Adams. I'm so sorry
you're Maddie. That's good. Doctor. I never going to talk about anybody
and see it in again. Never. I'm pretty sure you won't Maddie,
and see you best get on homenow. Put some of that liniment on

(14:39):
your misery is the one in yourneck and shoulder? I mean, I
guess the other one will disappear. It's all accord, m m m.

(16:18):
This is the Family Doctor. I'llbe in to see you again, right,
so goodbye, welcome back. AndI don't know if I could handle

(16:44):
it if my doctor used that typeof strong language, if I had a
doctor say to me, gosh toFriday, I don't know if I could
handle it. In all seriousness,I think that this was a solid first
episode. And I think that whilethe motor storytelling may be specific to the
time, the moral of the storyis timeless. We might question the quick

(17:10):
escalation a rumor to a teenage girlattempting suicide, except this is the sort
of thing that happens in our modernworld through things like cyberbullying all the time.
Family Doctor is a series that focuseson a vision of medicine that is

(17:32):
foreign to our modern world, andthe same thing can be said of another
series that premiered as a half hourprogram, Doctor Christian. Both focused on
rural doctors who were pillars of thecommunity, voice of morality, compassion,
and decency. It's certainly an idealizedvision, but certainly one that many medical

(17:59):
men in rural areas aspired to.Now there were a total of thirty nine
episodes. Local stations could air themin a variety of ways. The one
station I found airing them in nineteenthirty seven was playing them everyday Monday,
Wednesday and Friday, but you certainlycould have played these on a weekly schedule

(18:21):
as well. I certainly enjoyed ourvisit with Doc Adams, and I hope
we get to make our way backto Cedarton sometime soon. It's time for
me to close up the Old Snackwagon, but don't worry, we'll be back
