Welcome to the Party Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
A celebration of professional women's disc.
Speaker 3 (00:03):
Golf with plenty of hot takes, fun stories, and questions.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
I'm Pandemic Beet, I'm Christine Jennings, I'm cone Montgamery, and
we are the Party, the Party Podcast. We come party
with us. Did you say for my lag gamory? She
did gambre. All right, let's get into this for weekend episode.
All right, well, friends, I got food poisoning today. I
(00:28):
was going to open up with something discolf related, but
instead I'm just going to open up with the fact
that I tried to be healthy and before I went
to the grocery store because I'm a stay at home
mom and that's how I get out of the house.
I made a smoothie because I'm a stay at home
mom in Florida and it was sixty five out and
it was smoothie weather, so I made one, and I
was at checkout at Whole Foods because I'm a stay
(00:51):
at home mom in Florida who goes to Whole Foods,
and I freaking poisoned myself with my smoothie. And I
have had stomach rams until five minutes ago. And I
had that movie at three point thirty PM in there.
What happened? This is crazy because had I gone to
like Taco Bell, all the jokes about Taco Bell never
(01:11):
would have happened to me, never would have felt this
bad off Taco Bell. I'm just gonna say that right now.
I agree. I agree. I put in a protein that
I just didn't agree with. Like my body was like thanks, no, thanks,
get this out of me. It was horrible. It was horrible.
But how are you guys, ConA, how's it going?
Speaker 3 (01:29):
I'm sunburn, according to Christine, I guess my my face
matches my shirt.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
I guess I'm orange.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
So I'm getting lots of sun here in Texas because I'm.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
A pro discoffer in Texas, just.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Getting practicing for opening, also doing the work.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Christine.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, I'm just I'm just chilling.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I work from home. That's what I do. So I
did that.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I'm real. Yeah, how cute.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
It was cute all of your I have like my
discolfriend group, and then I have well they're actually also
my discolf friend group, but they're like my.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Ohio friend group, if that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
So anyway, Christine, was the last time you played even
disc golf? I talked to someone this weekend who's like,
you know Christine Jennings, right, She's from Cincinnati, Ohio, so
are we? And I can't remember their names, sorry, but
I'm like, when was the last time Christine Jennings went out.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
For bart and I played?
Speaker 5 (02:23):
I want to say it was sometime this year, like
sometime in twenty twenty five, because it was like, I
don't know, January or February, and it was randomly sixty
five degrees outside, so.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
We're like, let's go play to disc golf and we did.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Hasn't it been pretty cold?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (02:34):
But I think it's actually spring, Like the Midwest kind
of does like a psych just kidding kind of thing
with the weather, and so I can't tell if that's
what this is right now, because it was seventy degrees today,
so it's been nice but still like you know, cold
at night and then it warms up to seventy so
it's been nice to like leave your windows open while
you're sleeping and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
But I can't tell if it's here to stay or not.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Hopefully. I think you played a lot more last year
though than you had in a while. Yeah, I played a.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Lot more local, nonsanctioned events.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
I don't want to play sanction events because it gives
me anxiety to care about ratings and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
But I just like a lot of stack.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
Yeah, I don't want that. I don't want that stress.
I just want to go out and throw Frisbees for fun.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
I have a tournament sport. I have a tournament at
Olympus next week, and I haven't thrown a disc in
like ten days. And that's it. Like this thing I've
ever done. It's an a tier because it's thrown down
the mountain. I don't have any expectations. I just really
like that tournament and there's not really anyone going who's
I'm hoping gonna like take it so seriously and make
(03:38):
it not fun because all the people who are taking
it really seriously are on tour by now. Also, I
don't have to worry about playing with them, because you know,
I won't be on that lead card.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Hey you just might, you might pop, Oh my god
is dying.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
I just get to be at the bottom with the
other homies who have jobs. Tona, you have exciting news
because you got in a into your family. Yes, I
got a furry little.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Dog we found a German shepherd. We found a Harrison's
twin just in the middle of the road, and Colton
totally could have hit him if he hit her if
we weren't paying attention.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
But got her. She was all scared.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
She came to scolfing with us. We were actually like,
oh my gosh, let's keep this dog. And then we
Colton's parents were like, you should probably like wait, you know,
hasn't you've been like twenty four hours since you found
this dog. So we took it back to the same
like area, ended up finding his parents, her parents, and
we were depressed when we had to give her back.
So we were like, I think that's just a tell
(04:39):
sign that we need a fluffy animal with us. So
we went back to that rescue found Bunny, who is
now Waco and she's the sweeted little baby.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
How hard, Yeah, good question.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
She's almost nine months old and she was surrendered the baby.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
She was surrendered at.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Eight weeks, so she's been there for a hot minute.
Her dad was going into the service, into the military,
and couln't find anyone to take care of her.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Wow, and then you guys came, but no, she gets
love comes along with the strength Gary. Wow, I just
sing the whole song. I just do all three minutes
of the song. Carry out podcast is seeking. I just
stick to the bit for three minutes and fifteen seconds
of friends like with the commitment. Well, we'll leave that
(05:31):
to Mariah. I forgot what I Oh, I was going
to say that. Normally, when I see a new disc
golf dog, I get a little bit nervous. But you
guys are amazing parents. We've been nervous. We're going to
do such a good job.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
I mean like people have had their dogs off leash
and I've had to like been like, Hi, this is
my brand new dog, and like, let's let's not do that,
Like let's be on a leash and be responsible parents.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
But yeah, training is happening.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
I love that. All right, Well we should probably jump
into this episode because a lot went down in Waco
and we got to cover it. I keep reading the intro. Sorry,
I'm like, wait, we already did that, all right? Well Waco. Uh.
I just wanted to cover the Round one feature card,
and this is something that I want to do because
(06:22):
if they were featured on coverage in the first round,
I want to feature them here so we can kind
of talk about the different people. So I'm going to
go into that and then you guys can jump in
with maybe some highlights that you heard, saw, experienced, and
then I'll fill in the gaps. But the Round one
feature card was Dianne Carrie, Emily Weatherman, on a Kinstan,
(06:44):
and Kristin Lot. Hello. Her first time with her new
last name. How many times are people going to go
so casual with her first name and then so strong
and aggressive with her second name? Here the first time
I've heard do that? Really, it was every time I've
heard it mentioned, it's this emphasis, and I'm like, it's yes.
(07:04):
It always catches me off guard. All right, Dan Carrie,
you're twenty twenty four Q Series Cascade Challenge winner. Anytime
you look up a Big eight's year, this girl is
there and she's probably winning it, especially if it's on
the East Coast. She's won them all, including the one
that I'm going to next week. She's not going, not
that it would matter for me, but anyways, she won,
and this was her first year with Prodigy Discs, so
(07:27):
it was really cool to see her throwing. We also
had Emily Weatherman, she won the twenty twenty four Des
Moines challenge from the Chase card, which was exciting, and
a Texas local, which was nice to see. It's a
big state, but there's not too many women who are
representing Texas strictly out on tour. There's only like a
small handful. And her first year with en of A Discs,
(07:47):
so she's a teammate of our ConA Montgomery. We also
had Onikin Sten. Yeah, she is really good. Anakin was
on the podcast last week, so if you want to
hear an intro about her, it was last week.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So that's sick to check it out.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Kristen Lot the fan favorite, sporting her new last name
and her signature fits through a company in Estonia called
I Court, spelled similarly to like iPhone, like it's just
a little ie. It's a tennis company. Well, they have
tennis apparel, but apparently they released a few signature designs
(08:23):
for her, but I don't see any of them currently available.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
They she did go on today literally mentioning that they
should be available at the end of March.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
I was really wondering because she had jerseys and skirts
and beautiful apparel. Did you happen to do that? Christine?
Like watching live.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
Yes, they fit her so well, and like the colors
that she picked, I'm assuming she designed them or had
a hand in designing them.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
M m yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Color color palettes are great.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
They're I feel like they're really springy, like pink and
purples and maybe some blues, but I love them.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
I do like she took her logo too, and like
made it into a pattern, as if you guys need
this too, Like it looks like really just like a
cool pattern from afar, but if you look really close,
like it's her logo, Like I thought that was really smart.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Did she keep the same logo with her new last name?
Is it still KT branded or is it? Okay, that's
a good question.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
It's the same logo.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I like the KT. I don't think there's a problem
with it at all.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Wait, no, Hannah, I feel like you're talking about like
the more blocky KT that she used to have. She
sense came out with like a more like swoopy looking one.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yeah that's the one. I mean, okay, I feel like
there's not a tea on that one. And then I
just that it makes sense as why she's KA. I
just want to give a special shout out to the
fact that you can go online to her website, Christenstar
dot com and purchase socks and they all be delivered
to you and a can. And I feel like we
don't talk about that enough. Wait didn't you order them?
I wanted to. And then I forgot a tuna can,
(09:51):
like a little tuna can, and you pop it open
in their socks. That's cute. I love it.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
I like it. It's different.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
I just feel like we don't talk about that enough.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
I didn't even know anyways.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Waco was three rounds on Brass East. It's affectionately called
the Beast, but not by me because that's confusing because
there's already another Beast. This one's the be East with
a capital E. It's a mix of wood in an
open park style golf right in Waco, Texas. There's ground play,
guarded greens, little baby holes and then big power holes,
and there's lots of wind. Like I said, it was
(10:23):
a three round tournament. What did you guys take away
from Waco?
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Yeah, like you said, it was super windy. I think
that came into play more so when we were on
the first three holes and then on the last like
four or yeah, three or four, because it was just
like when we were in the woods, like you'd feel
like some like wind, but it honestly, the trees had
such a good job of like really not messing with
(10:49):
the disks inside of the woods. So it was like
really trying to like stay in between the lines the
first few and the last few, which obviously I think
that's one of the toughest finishing like stretches, especially in
the wind when it comes to our DGPT events.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, I was.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Gonna say the definitely seventeen and eighteen, like right where
the baskets on the water windy. Couldn't imagine, but I noticed,
And I don't know if it's because of the wind,
because interesting, ConA, you mentioned that in the woods it
wasn't so windy. There was just all throughout the weekend
women that were on coverage, there was a lot of
(11:25):
missed puts in the circle and not like you know,
edge of circle puts. It was just like right around
the bullseye or fifteen feet, you know, kind.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Of like routine puts.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
And so I don't know if that's like it's one
of those it's beginning of the season type things, and
so people are kind of getting in their grooveing off nerves,
being on coverage, or if they it's like, hey, Kristen's
in town and she's winning, so we got to catch up,
you know, like that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
So I don't know what it was, but there was
a handful of missed circle puts.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
I noted that too, especially, I wrote like from fifteen
or sorry, from twenty to twenty five feet. It seemed
like that range of putting just became so much more difficult.
And it wasn't always the change of elevation or the wind.
It just sometimes was people rushing and they weren't going
(12:13):
through the routine, and it was it looked like they
weren't maybe comfortable all the time. But because there's so
many different factors that it could have been, it's hard
to just have, you know, it's hard to like kind
of break through. But it's definitely something to pay attention
to for another tournament because they have back to back,
so I'm wondering if we'll see that stat improve.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yeah, but we're supposed to experience similar winds like we've
practiced the last two days here and Open in Austin
with very similar winds, and Sprinkle Valley doesn't have as
many woods, so it's just like we'll see, we'll see
for sure.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
So when of my highlights actually fits with this, I
want justice for Diane Carrey after round one because on
whole fifteen she put at the basket into a headwind
and she the disc lifted and it went up above
the basket, as it will do pick up in a
headwind if you're not careful with the nose angle or
(13:08):
maybe for me that's my putting style is to predict
that because I'm not a very like spint putter. I'm
more of like a push putter, and i have to
really pay attention to the wind and aim differently. And
it seemed like maybe she just didn't adjust correctly for
whatever reason happens all the time. So it lifted over
the basket, right. She goes to the other side, and
(13:29):
now she's putting in a tailwind, and it seemed like
she made the correction, but instead of anticipating the like
she anticipated the drop, but she put more on her
disc and so nothing happened to the disc and she
hit the cage again and just like missed and she
went back to back putting. In The commentary was pretty
(13:52):
lacking for this moment. Again, it was whole one, and
it was whole twelve. I mean, sorry, it was whole fifteen.
So I could be wrong with whichever wind was, whatever direction,
but the point was I really am said that a
the commentators didn't pick up on that, because it's a
teachable moment instead of just watching a player struggle on
(14:12):
the putting green. There's a reason for it, and it's
a good time to inform the audience who might be
thinking that this isn't very entertaining or be a little
bit critical, as people tend to do with FBO, that
there's actually a lot at work here, and Dean is
being intentional with all of these misses. It's just not connecting.
And so I wanted justice for her because I felt
(14:33):
really bad and I was kind of annoyed that they
were just kind of like, that's unfortunate because she was
putting for like Birdie and then ended up, you know,
taking a stroke or something like that, and so I'm
just kind of bummed for her, but justice for Deane. Guys,
the wind is it's tough, and you have to pay
attention to a lot more factors when it picks up.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
So you were mentioning the commentary and how it was lacking,
And I actually am curious on what people's like if
we I want to have a poll, maybe we can
make a poll somewhere. I want to know, would you
prefer the chatty kathy commentators like the ones that I
constantly over the weekend have DGN playing on my TV
in the living room, but I'm like doing chores, so
(15:13):
I'm not necessarily watching, but I'm listening.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
I don't love when people are.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
Like non stop going, going, going, Like I don't mind
some airtime of just letting it breathe hearing some chains,
like you know, there was a lot of people online
this weekend that were commentating on the commentators saying that
they were letting it breathe out too much. So in
that specific instance, Hannah, that you were talking about, I
(15:39):
could see, Okay, in that moment, they should have said something.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
But in general I liked.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
The commentary team for this weekend because they let it
breathe a little bit more. But it seemed like people
on the internet had an opposite reaction.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
And maybe there's always.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
The opposite reaction online and I was just being sensitive
to this topic because I like this specific set of commentators.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
I'm curious to like think, what.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
What do you guys think?
Speaker 2 (16:04):
What do you prefer?
Speaker 3 (16:04):
So I've actually I like Juliana Korver because I love
her insight. She's one of our veterans of the sport,
and I think she has a lot of great things
to say. But I will say over the past two
years she has let it breathe a lot, Like I
feel like she can get quiet often. So I don't
know if like she is just thinking, like, hey, I
(16:26):
don't want to talk a ton, like maybe she is
being intentional.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
About that she wants to make it breathe.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
But I have noticed definitely with her that like it'll
just be silent. But then again, like her Counterpark isn't
doing a great part of like a great job of
like kind of bringing her in and being like, hey, Juliana,
you know, like give me.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
Your insights on this, you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
So it's like kind of both of them could kind
of fill it a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
In the booth, just for context, we did have Charlie
Eisenhood of All two wor Old disc Golf and Juliana
Korver of Countless Frisbee related world titles in the booth,
and they were cleaned up though they were in professional attire.
I liked it. I liked that it was personal to them.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
It didn't have to be a uniform. I like their commentary.
I think my critique would be more color. I think
we need to know, especially in round one, who these
players are and connect them to the fans a little
bit more. I understand her hesitancy, because you don't want
to speak about things that no one cares about. It's
(17:33):
the worst feeling in the world, even for us. Sometimes
I like listen back and I'm like, duh, Like, if
you're in the sport at all, you obviously know. But
I think a little bit more color. And then for Charlie,
I think just a little bit more honor for some
of the moments in FPO and not scaling back your
honest reactions because that's your personality. But I think just
(17:54):
keeping in mind that they are showing up and they
are working hard, and even though it doesn't always come
to fruition on the course, we can still talk about
things that happen, whether positive or negative, in a good way.
We can spin it to be entertaining because sometimes it's
you know, you've done a few rounds and you've worked
both broadcasts, and you go to round three and someone's
(18:16):
missing their fifteen footers and you're like, oh, what do
you want me to say?
Speaker 5 (18:19):
You know?
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Sure, So I think that's my only knock. But my
other if we're going to talk about knocks, is that
we had a guy and I'm calling him mister crocs Man,
and I just want to talk. But this guy, I
(18:40):
don't remember. It was Wholy eighteen, but I don't remember
what round maybe round two, it must have been. Kristen
t Tar was like stepped onto the team was going
to throw. It doesn't matter what kind of shots she's
gonna throw, if she's gonna try to get it over
the water and not. She was going to throw, and
there's the crowd behind her and Silver is off. You know,
you can see because the camera is stationed behind her
(19:02):
of course as always, so it's zoomed out and you
can see her, and then you can see some of
the gallery maybe four or five feet away from her,
which in my opinion is way too close. But they
were sitting on the cement wall that's right there, and
so this guy was wearing crocs and she's going to throw,
and it's quiet as usual, and all you can see
(19:23):
is him just like sitting there wearing sunglasses, just like
no one can see me because I'm wearing sunglasses. Like
that was the energy. But then he just starts kicking
his legs. He just kicks his freaking legs up against.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
The cement like an idiot, Like he's not at a
disc golf tournament, like he's in a Broadway musical and
he's in the background of a song and he's just yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
And he's just kicking his legs. And Kristen, I don't
know if like she was bothered or I don't know
if she could hear it, Like I'm just you know,
watching from my couch, and you see her like stop,
and she like resettles herself, and Silver takes that opportunity
to move further away from her to give her more space,
and Crocs man just stays sitting there with his sunglasses
(20:10):
on as if he's invisible. And then as soon as
she goes to step up and throw, he kicks his
legs again, and he's under arrest. So I think the
solution is I don't think it's public shaming. I think
we just make like the Renaissance fares and we can
pay money to have him put in like under arrest.
He has to do like something crazy and to our chambers.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
You're suspended from all DGBT evens.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
In order to get out of the jail, he has
to do like the Chicken dance, or like recite the
Pledge of allegiance or something like something, you know, like
recite the Pledge of Allegiance but like in a really
high squeaky voice, or like do something embarrassing, and then
we all look at him throughout the week and we
all have to say, like for shame or whatever they
do that Renaissance fairs, because that's ridiculus.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
What do you mean?
Speaker 1 (21:01):
You're just really legs.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
I'd be so distracted, I actually, but I'm a confrontational
ConA I would have been like can you not?
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Can you I'm throwing excuse me, mister crocs man.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Fifteen.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
I texted Christine and was like, I feel insecure when
I'm on site and I'm at my car and i
have to sneeze and I'm at my car, like I'm Macbeth, this.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Is your life.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
But you know what I mean like you have to
be like considerate of others or if you if you
like kind of shut your door kind of loud, aren't
you kind of like oh, I hope no one heard that. Yes,
and then you're like, wait where am I or like
the porta potty door or something. Anyways, was there anything
else that you guys picked up from this tournament? Because
I could keep going because I haven't even gotten into
the play.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Yeah, I wanted to ask you guys.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
I wanted to talk about spotters and spotter like etiquette
and stuff. So for example, I believe it's whole twelve
or thirteen. It's the one wooded hole before you get
out in the open, and this spotter. I feel like
we had like two to three card backups on this
whole every single round, and it's like one of those
things where it's like we can't really see, you know,
(22:09):
the players at the landing spot, but every time that
we would have a backup, we'd go check and it's
like players in front of us are almost to the hill,
which no women I have ever seen. I mean, I
don't even think I've seen a male even get that far.
So I'm like, you know, are they being told that
they have to wait for the players to get to
(22:30):
the basket, which is like another like two to three
hundred feet or like, you know, like when does it
get to a point where you're like, man, you know,
I've played with Page Piers and she has been like, hey,
you know, I think they're safe enough far enough away
we're gonna throw, you know, like we've been to that
point where it's like, hey, this is speed of play,
and I know you guys are being mindful, thank you
so much for being here, but it's getting to a
(22:52):
point where it doesn't make sense.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
It reminds me of the ky hole at Idlewild because
there was a big.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
Backup last year of that. Anyways, I think spotters have anxiety.
They they would rather be safe than sorry.
Speaker 5 (23:08):
I think that's generally how they're trained, Like volunteers typically
have a volunteer lead who's kind of like telling them
what to do or like how to handle situations.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
So I feel like that's kind of where they're getting
it from.
Speaker 5 (23:19):
Plus the anxiety, right, like I don't want to mess up,
I don't want to piss these players off kind of situation.
But that doesn't mean that they have to hold you
for that long, So I think there's a balance that
could be had of them actually letting you go.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
Yeah, yeah, I agree with your sentiment KNA that it's
I think after like a few cards have gone in
or maybe the first round, it needs to be addressed
if you're the spotter to be like, Okay, they weren't
you know, hitting near the play the place that you
told me they had to be at. I think we
can start them a little earlier. Did you have time issues?
(23:53):
Like it's just worth having a conversation. But I wonder
if it was that way because of maybe the men,
But you said that not even the men. Could you
know MPO could hit there.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
Of those spots.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Yeah, yeah, that's tough, and it's hard because you cool
off too, and that's what. Yes, you want to prevent
as many moments of that as possible, because we even
see it in scoring when we're watching coverage at any tournament,
like you'll see a player and they'll be on fire
and then they have a little break and it's like
it's hard to get back in that zone and refocus,
(24:25):
and then you're thinking about it and it's just all crap.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
Especially when you're hitting like gaps. Gaps.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Yeah, you're like, wait, I'll just play ahead of you guys,
see you later. Can we play through?
Speaker 3 (24:37):
But yeah, that's one thing that I noticed personally.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Christine, did you have any more? Okay? So Jessica Wis
obviously has to be a highlight that we talk about.
She played the course the first two days like she
grew up there. She played that course like she just
got off of a shift and went to the course
to blow off some steam, and she had some music
on and she was out there just like her facial expressions,
(25:03):
her reactions to shots. She was like if you told
me that she was in a simulation where none of
us were there, I'd be like, yeah, I get it,
because she was so comfortable. She just looked like I
remember when this tree was a sapling energy and I
was living. I was so happy. She kind of did
this last year, which she started off super hot and
(25:23):
her putting was really good. I'm hoping that she'll just
build on that consistency because you can tell it's all
from confidence. Because as the tournament went on into round three,
the hits started coming and she had to adapt. She
had to get a little bit uncomfortable, and you could
kind of see it took a toll because it just
sucks to suck, you know, like it sucks to hit
(25:44):
a tree. It sucks to be so emotionally connected and
not realize that you are, and then you have to
allow your nervous system to regulate. It's a whole thing,
and I want I was really rooting for her. She
looked great in the first two rounds, but yeah, I
just think it's like once she started realizing that the
disc Golf Pro Tours on the line, there was cameras,
there was a gallery, and then things stopped going her way,
(26:07):
she had a hard time getting comfortable again.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
I was impressed with her putt though, because she has
a super pushy put and considering the amount of wind
that we had out there, I was just very impressed
with the amount of.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
Like big puts shoes making.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Yeah, like I would have like expected, with like the
pushiness of her put maybe for the wind to kind
of mess with it. But I saw a few puts
from like edge of circle, like maybe like a tough
straddle by like an electric box, and like she cashed it,
and I'm like, girl, it was like forty mile per
hour winds, Like I.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Was really impressed. Yeah, yeah, I watched her. I watched
Kristen holland they should miss Sea highlights over the weekend. Obviously,
we saw the other women, Dianne, we saw Emily. You know,
it's tough to just pull someone up off the top
of your head and to just go like, oh, well,
here's what I saw, because it's just so much more
(26:58):
than that. I think the biggest story Carne that's going
to come out of this is why is Kristin so dominant?
Speaker 5 (27:03):
Right?
Speaker 1 (27:04):
Because she won? She won by a significant amount of
strokes and that final round she just was able to
adjust in a way that the other girls weren't and
she just shook them off because she has a well
rounded game. And the thing is with Kristin, I was
like thinking about it for a while. I don't want
to just do the thing where we bring up Kristin
and we go she's so good. I mean, look at
(27:25):
how the other girls did, because that's crazy, Like we're
not in the business of doing that. That doesn't spark
excitement for me to just be like, look at everyone
else and then Kristen, Wow, she has a really well
rounded game. But the thing that makes her tricky is
that she has a ton of confidence. So even when
she's off the fairway, she has so much skill that
(27:45):
she can rely on that it just backs her confidence.
There's not really a flaw in her game that she's
insecure about. It's all meant And so if she starts
hitting trees, if she starts not getting things to go
her way, she gets bad kicks or bad roles or
(28:07):
things that happen in the disc. We've seen it all
the time. A gust of wind comes out of nowhere
and your disc is gone and it's ob and now
you have to scramble, And like we see her get frustrated,
and that frustration and adaptability and quick forgiveness is always
the thing that she talks about when she's talking about
her tournament recaps. She always if you go back, I
(28:28):
think it was like five or six posts last year
where she was just like, my confidence, my mental, my mindset,
my mindset, my confidence, my mental It's the only thing
she struggles with. So if you're asking me why is
Kristian's char so dominant, why is she so much better
than everyone else? I think she didn't have any issues
with her mindset because no one challenged her and so
(28:49):
even when she felt uncomfortable, there wasn't really a reason
to feel uncomfortable, you know. There wasn't like someone sneaking
up on her who was making all their putts or
not having bad luck or what nobody was really pushing.
And so if I'm gonna predict for next week, I'm
going to take into consideration what the course is, like
the conditions without being able to recognize, like is she sick?
(29:12):
Does she have PMS? Like any of these uncomfortable things
that can happen to you when you're out there. Has
she been eating well since she've been here? Is everything
good back home? Like anything taking her attention away? I
don't know those things. So I get why people in
our position always just go, oh my gosh, she's so amazing,
Like she's so good, no one's going to be able
(29:34):
to beat her. Obviously that's not true because she doesn't
win everything that she shows up to and she also
wasn't leading after round one, so like chill out. But
she is really good and she does have a really
well rounded game, and that's what makes it. I mean,
it's hard to beat her because it's she has to
be in her own way, like She's not gonna be
worried about what you're doing, unless it's that instance where
(29:56):
you're going neck and neck and she's not catching break.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Yeah. And I also think it's like I think every
you know, sport have athletes that, you know, for a
certain amount of time, they're just dominant. I mean we
saw Katrina Allen, you know, a few years back, dominant
for two, like two or three years page Piers.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
She was the christ and Tatar. She was the no
one can touch her.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
So it's like I think we always see that, and
you know, I think you know, things happen, like you
know Paige, you know, she got married, she got dogs,
she got a house in Florida. Well like maybe attention
taken away, and you know, she's trying to find her
way back to being on that same level. And it's
just like, yeah, like Kristen is amazing, But I do
not think that she's going to be dominant forever. I
(30:38):
think we have players like for example, Caydence Burt. I
played with her at Alabama and I was like, oh
my gosh, like you're like, she's I think like eighteen
years old or maybe not even. And I texted Colton's brother,
and I'm like, y'all better do what you can to
keep this girl, because I haven't seen this kind of
level of play from a young athlete in a long time.
(31:00):
So it's like, yeah, Christin's amazing, but I do not
think she will be this great for or she will
continue being great. But I think other players are going
to be dominant as well.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
Yeah, I feel like other sorry, like international players and
European players also. We talked about this two weeks ago.
They're starting to kind of show up more in the
top ten and that's exciting to me, just because not
that the Americans are boring, but like it's just nice
to get things, you know, jumbled around more. It's not
always the same top five, top seven, you know, things
(31:31):
are really shifting around, and I'm hoping that, you know,
some of them will eventually start beating Kristin out more,
just to keep it, keep it different.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
I just think the worst thing that we can do
is to just blow it off and say like, oh,
of course Kristin again to our community, when it's just
so much more than that, because what she's doing is remarkable,
like the amount of consistency and the skill that you
have to have to be kicked way off right into
the thick woods and to have a shot and you're
(32:03):
like lining up a shot from that space and you
know kind of what you need to do, and it
doesn't matter if you execute it or not. The fact
that you have a skill that you can go back
to when you're in an uncomfortable position is like, that's
what I mean by well rounded. I don't mean like, oh,
she can put, she can throw, Like she can throw
from so many different like ways of contorting her body,
(32:28):
Like there's so much strength. And if I'm thinking of
going pro or you know, if I'm in media and
I'm analyzing it, that's what I'm talking about. Because other
women have that too. But there's always that thing like
Hall and Hanley, we talk about her, she's still pretty new, guys,
like she's you know, came in and like four years ago.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
Maybe like yeah, for really.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
Some of these people, like it's just crazy. But I
think the thing that I don't want to do is
just like chalk it up to she's really good and
everyone else isn't. So I'm glad that you guys kind
of chimed into because it's important to just the field
is stacked there's a lot of talent. I had a
note too on Cadence that she took back to back
top top tens already. Well had two pretty significant tournaments
(33:16):
just like that.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
I think we'll be seeing her a lot.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
Yeah, so I want to kind of move into a
question and answer portion of the podcast just to continue
the conversation. I organized it this way because it just
can't help myself if I organize. I just feel the
need to organize. So in round one, Emily Weatherman was
showing frustration with her slow start. I thought it was interesting.
(33:39):
On Instagram, she actually commented that she felt good mentally
all weekend because the first round seemed like there was
a lot of just displeasure with the way that her
discs were flying and just her. Like I said, she
had a slow start. Everyone else kind of took off
because the first couple holes are pretty scorable, Like I
think the Beast is pretty scorable in general, and she
(34:01):
was lagging behind already. Is the challenge of Brasos. I
guess this is a question for Kona first, because you
were there. Is the challenge of Brasos that it's so simple,
it's hard because of great expectations.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
I mean I'm even like taking my own experience of
like you know, being a past winner. Yes, Like I
don't think it's an extremely hard course. I talked to
Hannah Blumrose during the first round. She shot eight down.
I think she was leading the field going into the
second round, and she even had like a few miss putts.
But it's like I was talking to her and I'm like,
you know, how does this event compare to you know,
(34:36):
any of the other events on the road, Like do
you think this is the hardest? Do you enjoy this one?
And she's like, yeah, it's a good like warm up course.
But she's like, I think it's pretty simple. You hit
your lines off the team, and you know you should
be able to get up and down pretty easy.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
And we saw she finished I.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Believe third or somewhere close there, yes, yes, yes, o, yes,
okay cool yes, yes, yeah, okay. So and she ended
up taking third even with like you know, missing some
putts here and there, but like, you know, she's one
of the cleanest standstill throwers that I know in the
FPO division. She's super accurate off the tee. She knows
her bag really well, and so it's just like of
(35:14):
course she's going to take top ten because she can
play that course, you know, easy.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Off the team, Tournament Central and the park bathrooms were
located right next to Whole fourteen's basket. And while it
wasn't wildly discussed during coverage or after the event, is
this something that needs to be adjusted in the future, Christine?
Is this something that is discussed at all, Like just
the relation of Tournament Central to the action?
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Yes, great, it is to the next.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Like, oh okay, kick follow up, perfect, there's our clip.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
So basically the way these conversations go is the operations
lead at the Pro Tour is having these planning meetings
with the tds well and like weeks weeks months before
the events, and we're like checking off literally like a checklist,
basically taking notes and all.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
This, and so that's like one of the items.
Speaker 5 (36:08):
And so I think at this point, because we've gone
to so many returning events, that it's like, oh okay, yeah,
like Tournament Central over my whole fourteen again, Like cool,
moving on to the next thing. You know, Like that's
kind of how those conversations go when it's a returning
event and when like nothing's changing.
Speaker 4 (36:24):
So I think that.
Speaker 5 (36:25):
Unless there's some evidence that shows otherwise, or like maybe
many players start complaining to people about that, then we
would reassess and be like, Okay, hey, last year fourteen
was an issue, like we need to figure something else out.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
So I guess that to answer your question, like yes
and no.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
It's something I observed when they would show coverage of
cards that didn't have a big gallery, because it was noticeable,
but as the lead cards came through, the gallery fills
out the people walking to the bathrooms a lot more.
So it wasn't really something I that I saw and
it was like, ooh, t I'm gonna ask Christine. I
was just wondering because the tournament experience is something that
(37:06):
the Discault Rotora has been investing in and trying to grow,
and with that comes growing pains like this, potential growing
pains like this where you're like, hey, we have this
great venue, but it's right next to the basket like
a crap. So I just was curious about how that goes.
But that's cool. It's cool to know that lots of
planning ConA did you have anything I did?
Speaker 3 (37:28):
I did, so I will say this is this is
kind of on topic, kind of off topic, but I
did notice that like the tournament took in a lot
of the player advice. When it came to Whole, I
believe it was a Whole sixteen or Whole fifteen last
year where it was kind of like on the edge
of the river, and it's called the Brass by the way,
I've been corrected by several Texans, the Brass River, and
(37:51):
it's like the vending used to be on Whole fifteen.
And this year they brought back the OG fifteen, and
so I've heard so many people that were so hyped.
They were like so many players are like thank you
for bringing back the OG fifteen and not making us
play that weird hole again.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
And also like.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
I heard from some of the actual staff on hand
that we were going to play Lake Waco and then
like all of a sudden, they like got a new
manager when it came to I don't know, I don't
know what his title was, and he was just like, Nope,
we don't like disc golf for you're not allowed to
come back here. And so it was like really last minute,
(38:29):
like as of like three weeks ago before the event,
something crazy stupid, but personally talking to all the other pros.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
We were so happy to play three rounds at the Beast.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
It's a fun course.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
It is best course.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
I'm biased, but it's the best.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Yeah. You won this one with plenty of strokes too,
so you know about life. And I bet you didn't
have a crocsky kicking in the back. I would have,
you said, I'll have to go back. Excuse me, sir, Okay,
Well back to the course. Hole twelve is the lengthy
par five and anywhere off the fairway is very thickly wooded.
(39:08):
Was there an advantage to throwing a higher speed driver
off the tee because I saw a lot of women
on coverage with higher speed drivers in their hands throughout
that hole, and I'm just thinking, why would you risk
losing control for a little bit more distance.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
No, personally, I think and I learned this after the round.
I did throw a high speed driver and boom, hit
a tree in the crap and I'm like, oh my gosh,
I hope I save a six, you know, And it's
like a par five, it's a pretty You could get
a pretty easy four. Honestly, if you go chip shot
mid range, chip shot mid range, turnover mid have a
(39:51):
put edge of circle inside the circle and afterwards, I'm
mad at myself for realizing that after the fact, But
it's just like, yeah, no, I think it's silly as
heck to be throwing high speed drivers off of, you know,
in that fairway when it's like you could you could
get the four with just like chip chip chip, you know.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
M I feel like a lot of players.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
I don't know. I guess it depends on if it's
like a fairway or a driver driver, because like sometimes
fairways can be a little more lenient to give you
like that shape. Sometimes like uh, midrange just won't give
you the flight that you're looking for, Like maybe it
doesn't have that turn with the fade out or whatever
the deal is. But I generally agree that I always
get scared in the woods, so I throw midranges.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Yeah, I'm trying to think.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
So.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
The reason for the folks at home why you would
maybe want to use a slower speed disc is just
because of the ricochet of momentum off of the surface
will be less costly. Some people will throw a higher
speed driver because they want to play the skip up
to the green, but most of the time in the woods,
you're gonna see a lot of the golf slowed down,
(40:58):
including the way I'm talking. Apparently most of the time,
you're gonna see a lot of the golf slow down,
and it's for that reason of in case something goes awry,
you hit a tree, You're not going super far up
the fairway. You're You're likely just gonna drop near whatever
obstacle you just hit. And I'm just curious, have you
guys ever been and this is like, you know, I
(41:19):
have to talk about recently, but have you ever been
on the freaking card with someone and they throw something
risky and it pays off and you're just like, should
I do it? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (41:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Should I throw that? To play within yourself?
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Is it can be hit at Olympus.
Speaker 3 (41:37):
I'm just gonna I haven't touched a disconten days and
let's throw made twelve.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Speed my disc golf. My YouTube video is throwing whatever
my cardmates throw without them knowing. I would love it.
That would be great. Okay, Well, I have a few
more things. The Swoosh logo was covered up on Kristin
Guitar's Latitude bag and this was a hot discussion on Facebook.
(42:01):
I have a Facebook because I'm a stay at home mom.
In case it wasn't covered. Silver Lot came to the
rescue with an explanation saying that the swoosh was covered
up because it can no longer be present without the
latitude sixty four inscription with it. It has to come
as a package. There was a rumor on there that
said that they had received a cease and desist from
(42:23):
the company O'Neil, which is the surfing apparel company with
the wave. I don't know if it was true, or
maybe they received something from someone similar. It's a pretty
simple design, so I guess I could see that happening,
or they might just not have it trademarked. I am
going to say something right now that I have no
shame in probably listen to the other podcasts because they
(42:45):
probably know to make that. How dare you? Meanwhile, like
Terry and Johnny are probably live right now in smash
Box talking about it. We should just go watch it
really time. In Rebecca Freakin' Cox, you guys took down
the core F record by two strokes and shot her
highest rated round of her career so far. Rebecca is insane.
(43:10):
I love her and I love It's not funny, it's
actually pretty emotional. But like a couple of years ago,
she decided to abandon not only her putt, but like
her driving, and she just reworked the entire thing and
stayed on tour and like retooled her relationship with the
disc and just never quit and rode the bottom cards
(43:30):
and rode not cashing and just stayed out of the
conversation for two or three seasons, like until she really
got her feet under her. And I know that we
don't always get to decide when hard work pays off
in disc golf because there's so many factors, but it
is so nice to just see her get rewarded in
this way, because Wow, it must have felt like a
nice big hug from the sport to just like I
(43:53):
did it.
Speaker 5 (43:54):
You know.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
So I being the sassy friend that I am Rebecca Cox,
I go to bat for my girl. And someone at
Olympus during the All Star event was like, why is
Rebecca an All Star? And then she went and won
it and I literally was like, that's why, that's why
she goes star. It probably was the Crocs guy in jail, Jail, jail,
(44:20):
So no, I was so impressed. I mean, we have
a little group chat and we were just like hyping
her up. I texted her personally and I was just like,
I want to be you when I grow up.
Speaker 1 (44:29):
Because she has put so much work.
Speaker 3 (44:31):
In during the off season. She worked out, She's been
doing cold plunges. She's crazy and she's just like her
and Cat Merch are on this mission to just like
be the next dominant female, you know what I mean.
And I'm just so impressed with her, And congrats Rebecca Cox.
I'm a fan.
Speaker 2 (44:47):
I love it. I've always been a fan.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
I love like the silent Well obviously she's like.
Speaker 2 (44:52):
In our friend group, so we love her.
Speaker 5 (44:55):
But anyways, players that really focus on their mental and
physical health during the off season, like I know, there
has to be players out there that are just like, oh,
I'm just gonna go relax for three months now because
I just grinded it out, which no shame to them.
But also there's people like Rebecca Cox or Cat March
kristin lat.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
That are working out.
Speaker 5 (45:17):
I saw Lucky posting like videos of her working out,
you know, Like, I love that so much and I
love seeing it pay off.
Speaker 3 (45:23):
I just see your spour is getting to the point
where FBO players are like, Okay, well.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
You know, Kristen is this top tier player. What is
she doing?
Speaker 3 (45:31):
How can I, you know, get to that point or
not one up her? But like how can I? How
can I get there? And obviously let's follow kind of
in her footsteps to see.
Speaker 1 (45:40):
And I feel like the community is excited for players
who are doing that, Like I think the community is
always searching for the people who are working hard. So
when you're pairing that with good storytelling, it's just makes
for a really good thing. And it can make you
money too. It can be worth it. Okay, my last
note is YOUSWDGC registration is live for twenty twenty five,
(46:03):
so if you guys are interested in going. I don't
know anything about it because I was supposed to figure
that out and then I got food poisoning quick Google. Okay,
do you know about it?
Speaker 4 (46:17):
It's in Wisconsin and I'm going till I.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
Know last time I was in Wisconsin. Haley King one,
we haven't seen her yet on Instagram. She's pretty active
and I think she's going open bag with only a
few sponsors. My prediction with her, she's gonna wait till
she wins again and then maybe someone will pick her up.
But she did not renew with Inevah and she's keeping
her options open. But she did win that one, so
(46:43):
she is registered. I saw a really cool post from
her about Barrett white Sony sweet International Women's Day. I
think it was a couple of days ago. Cool, good thing.
We have a women's sports podcast and we totally we
made a post about that. Cool love that. That was
(47:03):
so cool that post we made about it. Well, guys,
that was Waco. Three days of a lot of mental
hurdles and a lot of opportunities and a lot of
forgiveness if you didn't take advantage of them. Because guess
what we have gosh, eighteen more discolfer.
Speaker 2 (47:22):
