you got a chance. So,without any further ado, in a two
shot, mister Ryland Nelson said wrong, um, take to go, mister
Ryland Nielsen, take three go.I'm not trying anymore. Uh okay,
(02:29):
guys, Ryland Nielson, what yes? Why? Because where does the I
go? There's only one eye inthe whole thing. But where does it?
Just n I l ss o nNelson Nielson. It's Swedish, Yeah
it is. Hey, get myown muppet, get after me. Hey
man, thank you so much forjoining us. By the way, you're
(02:50):
very welcome. Yeah. So whatwere you with that restraining order? It
was only gonna last song you guyshave him to look at the out takes.
Uh, the pre pre intro. You catch up, Yeah, and
I'll catch up too. Hey man, were you what were you working today
today? Today? No? Canyou talk about how about yesterday? Yesterday?
I was, yes, can yousay what you were doing? I
was having a rehearsal for a playI'm doing right now. Actually, Sweet
(03:14):
Sweet Sweet talks about that play.Okay, while I'm doing a show currently
with Seniors Acting Lab. It's myfirst time working with them. Actually,
you're super well preserved to be withthe Seniors Acting Lab. Just to let
you, oh yeah, is thatlemon juice? I just squirted all on
my faith and immediately like fifty yearswiped off, dropped right off here.
Oh well, okay, so no, what are you? What are you
(03:35):
doing in that? So the showis called Bill C seven seventy three.
It is a political drama. Um, basically it is surrounding a senator played
by Chris Heatherington. If you're fromnor with him, uh yeah, great
guy. Basically he looks a lotlike you if you gave up spoiler okay,
spoiler alert, that's actually going toplay in here actually because yeah,
so Chris Heatherington. He plays thissenator and he has passed a bill Bill
(04:00):
C. Seven seventy three that basicallystates that after seniors reached the age of
eighty five, they're killed off. When they're that age, they don't longer
really serve a purpose to humanity,so they are just simply killed off,
right, And so this all stemsfrom his past. He was dealing with
a very abusive grandfather. He grewup with a literal hatred towards seniors and
(04:20):
towards old people because he always sawhis grandfather in that. So now that
he's an adult, he and he'sthis senator who has this power to pass
a bill such as this. He'sgoing strong with it. But through flashbacks
you're learning about where this anger isstemming from, and it by the end
of the play. I'm not gonnago spoiling the end here, but by
(04:42):
the end of the play you startquestioning it. You start questioning is this
truly the right decision? Is?Yeah, it stems from somewhere that is
very valid, but is his decisionhere valid? Right? And so through
the flashbacks, I played the youngerversion of the senator. So yeah,
so when you said I look likehim. Yeah, I played the younger
version of Chris, So that wasthe point. Can you tell me how
old he is in the play? How old is he supposed to be in
(05:03):
the play? Is he close tothat age or not at all? It
doesn't play in the play. Don'teven worry about it. I'll just go
out and watch it. Yeah,I just go see it. It might
go into some spoiler territory, andI don't want to spoiling it. I
do love a good plot twist, whether it be meant to completely blow your
mind or whether it's just to takethe play in a different direction. It's
it's still a plot twist, understood. Now, I'm going to ruin this
(05:26):
part of the interview just for asecond. Guys, Sorry, editors and
whatnot. But when you mentioned ChrisHeatherington, where's my camera there? It
is great. So I've worked withChris in the past many, many times,
and what I've started doing was Istarted taking a photograph of his and
started putting it in films, justmovies. I was in in the background.
This is the photo. Now imaginehim with glasses and then look at
(05:46):
that man just looks just like that. But there you go. So sorry,
I ruined the Sorry Darry. Anyway, Chris is watching that craft now
I know who to suit next. That's in like four movies and I've never
told this is the first time I'venever told them about it. And now
everybody's going to be searching for it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's
a it's a little easter Heatherington. It'd be like the Calgary version of the
(06:09):
Wilhelm Scream. We all know it'sthere, we just got to find it,
right, It's out there somewhere, lurking in the shadows. All right.
Sorry you said you wouldn't you tryand keep it to three personalities today?
Oh? Yes, sorry? Now, but you know what that brings
up? Voice work? Voice work, And like I I sort of thought
I thought of you as an actorfirst. When I think of you,
(06:30):
which is often, I think ofyou as an actor first. But I
believe you started with voice workers.I did. How did you? Uh,
let's talk about how did you transtransition, and then then maybe we'll
go back to the war. Yeah, um, I don't really know leg
Well okay, okay, well, yeah, we'd have to start with how
it started. I guess that, okay, just to be able to put
(06:51):
things in chronicle and culture later.Yeah, the Saint Star Wars. We're
not starting with episode four, okay, Well to start it off. Yeah,
basically, I grew up in asmall town that was very sports oriented.
It was like very you gotta bein a sports or you're not there,
right, I mean, yeah, right right. And that's the thing
(07:11):
is, I never really got thehang of it. I never really fully
felt like I was part of sports. And so my mother she put both
me and my older brother into soccer. He was the big soccer player.
He was the one scoring all thegoals, getting the girl kind of thing,
whereas I was always the one sittingon the sidelines commentating what was going
on? Oh that goes lad,he's passing the ball over. Did Jimmyjiddy
passages to Carl and now scurse?Yeah, And I remember the coaches that
(07:34):
are like, oh great, Rolen'scommentating again. And it even got to
the point they put me on defense. Okay, he's not going to touch
the ball very much. He's ondefense. Okay. But it got to
the point I got talking to thegoalie and oh great, they scored on
us again. Yeah, so they'relike, okay, sports is not for
him, this is not working. He's like, okay, well, because
he's commentating what does work? AndI was always doing wacky voices anyways.
(07:56):
I was always standing up in frontof my classmates doing impressions of the teachers
and everything. Stereotypical kid. Andso one day my teachers and my parents
that are all like, he's gotto do something with this. This can't
be something that he just does justfor the fun of it. He needs
to see us this week. Hegot to spread this out. Yeah,
right, Especially I was a smalltown. Three thousand people can walk from
(08:16):
one end to the other in likefive minutes. There's no very little room
for improvement. That what it's calledRaymond, Alberta. Yes, about twenty
minutes south of left Bridge. Okay, so I just thought, okay,
I gotta do something with it,but I didn't know where to start.
This is a small town where evenleft Bridge, no offense to even left
Bridge wasn't very big. So okay, what do I do? So you
need an answer self, go turnto Google. So I remember going to
(08:39):
Google and I just remember searching voiceactor. Wanted just to see what would
bring it up, and what endup happening was I found a Craigslist ad
for this independent video game company downin New York and they were looking for
voiceovers, so I thought, okay, it was for a first person shooter
game for the Wii. I've neverplayed it, actually, so I don't
know if it's any good or not. But the point is I tried out
(09:00):
for this main character, the bigmarsho Man got mc gun, this big
guy. They're like, okay,it's it's not really working out, but
we do want you to try outfor one other character. They're like,
we've got these two medics, MedicLee, who is a complete off the
wall goofball American, and Medic Fry, who is a very straight laced by
the book British man. And theybasically that we want you to try out
(09:24):
for the American one. Okay,Sure, gave it a shot, got
the part halfway through recording the other. Actually that's doing the British guy.
He dropped out. I don't knowif he wasn't getting paid enough or yet,
scheduling conflicts whatever, he dropped out. Three can you do both for
us? Sure? Okay? SoI literally did both of these medics that
are both arguing all the time becausethey're like the comic re leave in the
(09:46):
game, and so yeah, sosometimes it would be me just doing the
Americans. Sometimes would be me justdoing the British one. Sometimes it's like
you're not, let's try, andI'd be going back and forth doing these
two roles. And that was myfirst ever credit, just doing these two
off the wall Siskel and Ebert typecharacters that are just constantly bickering in this
first person shooter game for the Wii. And it's just it got the barrowing.
(10:07):
Okay, now what can I do? Because that was fun? What
else can I do? So fromthere I went to I did a music
video called Teenage Spaceman and that onewas not voice over, that one was
filmed, but that one basically thislittle girl she draws a picture of a
spaceman and through the power of herlove, she kisses him and he comes
into the real world. But becausehe doesn't belong here, he's scared.
(10:28):
He's terrified of this world. Hedoesn't belong here, he doesn't even know
where he is. So he wandersthe streets of Lethbridge trying to figure out
where he is, trying to findsome shred of belonging and he finds an
angel and she points him in theright jection and brings him back into that
picture. And yeah, so Iplayed this teenage spaceman in that and it
just slowly thick and things kept addingup, kept adding up, until here
we are where I'm literally sitting heredoing this stuff full time, making a
(10:52):
living out of it. Man,that is awesome. That's like a reverse
a video. That's what that is. Yeah, weird and okay, it
was quite fun. How how oldwere you did that? I was in
high school at that point, soprobably see yeah, yeah, I was
twenty when I left. But that'sthat's not a that doesn't matter. It's
not about me. I about me. Yeah, so what shut up?
(11:16):
How did you? Where did youhear that? Uh? My notes notes
to my notes are you should haveprepared. Um, my notes are mostly
That's what it says for everybody.Chidn't case do your homework? Oh man,
listen what okay, so you're sayingyou're doing this. Oh that's just
the normal sound of a man.My age crosses the legs on camera.
(11:37):
All right, guys, don't makefun of how Rickett? How Ricketty?
I am? Yeah? Okay, question what so do you do you do
you have like a day job?Are you still do well? I do
have stuff that I do in betweenthe cracks, like us obviously film stuff.
We're always gonna have our downtime. We're gonna have the off season,
We're always gonna have some sort ofhiatus. Right. So when I'm not
(11:58):
doing that, I actually trivia nightsat local pubs throughout the province. Oh
wow, Okay, so she's stilllike just up there grooving doing the whole
You are you doing voices as you'redoing the I know, I do you
need to ask that? When doI ever talk in my own voice?
Let's be honest here, Like God, I hope one of these answers is
Arnold Schwarzenegger and another one. Comeon, no, this is a group
(12:22):
inter you. Let's let's keep thisconsidual. Here. You signed all the
necessary paperwork for Gary, right,I yet permission guests in Vester Slean's permission.
So, man, what do youyou do anything in your downtime?
Like if you are um, ifyou have any downtime? Have you ever
had any downtime? Well? Youknow me, I'm always uping out doing
(12:43):
something. Yeah, Well, Ialways like to keep myself busy. I
was always raised that you put inan honest day's work, and unfortunately,
yeah, that means I can geta little too busy when I do have
downtime. I'm more of a Iguess, extroverted type person. I may
not seem like it, like Imay be outgoing and I love making people
laugh, but I'm also quite extroverted. If I'm having my downtime, okay,
I'm probably at home playing a boardgame with my wife or something like
(13:05):
that. Introverted and yes, introverted. Sorry, okay, okay, So
when you're not on you are youlike your quite? Yeah? Yeah?
Like you read? What do youdo with TV? Uh? More like
I do read? Sometimes it takesme a while to get through a full
book, don't okay? But yeah, okay, I'm going to start asking
you questions that I meant for differentuh previous guests. What was it like
(13:30):
being the first fem and no,uh, I'm gonna put this away now
and let's bring a Chris Heatherington bathWho wants to hear? Who wants to
see Chris Heatherington? Did we bringthem back? Do it all right?
Now? I'm just kidding o umMan what do we meet? I mean,
I know I was on the stairs, but okay, yeah, we
met quite a while ago, i'dsay so. If I'm not mistaken,
(13:54):
I think we met on private dicks. That may have been our first time
working together. Okay, I thinki'd heard of you. Um, that's
the normal amount of time a manof my age pushed down a tiger mug.
It's tiger mug. I thought thatwas a cheetah. But okay,
I don't label things I've heard. You should label very rare, short necked
(14:15):
giraffe. That's what that is.So private dicks. Yes, we work
on it. You were one ofthe leads in that. If I'm not
mistaken, I was one of thedicks. Yeah. I think I've actually
seen it yet. I agree withAlda. I haven't seen that episode.
But we were gonna work on somethingwhen the pandemic started. We both auditioned
for something. We both got it. I don't remember what it was,
(14:39):
and and the pandemic was happening, and I was just like I was writing
you, and I'm like, Idon't want to I don't want to go
out. Oh yes I Doah,Yeah, I don't remember it was either
okay, but I do remember this, yeah, because we were corresponding by
to each other because there I don'tmean to sound route to well whoever it
was is putting it on, butI do remember that. Yeah. There
they had like maybe two days fromwhen they sent us the script to when
(15:01):
they said we need you to havethis memorized. We need you to be
ready to go to shoot, andwe only had like a matter of a
couple of days. And it's justthere's no way. Yeah. Well that
was like thick of COVID. Yeah. When everything was first shutting down,
everybody thought this was the end ofthe world. I remember even going to
Walmart thinking telling my wife, like, we got a jack up on all
(15:22):
those like microvable meals because we don'tknow when we're going to be get let
out next. I was the evenpanicking thing, and this was the end
of the world, right, Soyeah, I remember that they were wanting
to do this shoot no sort ofCOVID precautions in place at all. Not
only that, Yeah, I hadto memorize all these lines for I think
it was like what half an hourlong shoot or half long, half an
hour long short. Yeah, Ihad to have all these things memorized.
(15:46):
But yeah, I only got acouple days of preparation, and I just
remember we both were just no,this ain't happening. Even if COVID wasn't
happening, you're putting a lot ofpressure on us here. Well, you
do get the pressure a lot wherethey send you something and then they just
change it. That's the world forme. But I do remember benefit of
having COVID just scaring everybody. No, I had literally just bought a camping
(16:07):
stove and like a light, likeone of those things that will light up
a tiny room, because I wasjust like, what if the power goes
up like it was? It wasreally but then our being, our being
ration would be yeah, like howlong can you keep that up for?
Fair enough? Before your wife?Yeah? Uh hey how about you won
(16:29):
some awards for another project that Iwas not in, but well my voice,
well yeah, I still say thatyou nobody's the Nobody prayer, Nobody
prayer. Yes, is that whatit is? Yep, it's not Nobody's
prayer. No, nobody nobody prayer. Yeah, you know you won something?
Would you win on that? Iwant a few things actually, uh
yeah, I want an award ata Best Actor award at a film festival
(16:52):
over in Italy. Hold on,hold on, all right, go ahead,
yeah, okay, um, there'sa couple in the States that I
was able to scoop. I wasnominated for the New Jersey Film Awards.
They have dominated me for Best Actorthere as well, but not only just
me myself, but the whole productionas a whole. It won a slew
of awards from all over the world. Really, that was awesome. A
shout out to Sean Pulsifer announced hisname. It's weird. Yeah, yeah,
(17:17):
So what do you have against me? Then? I, uh look,
let's not you know all we've hadto do this before. You just
say your last name and I'll justhave my mouth open. Okay, ready,
let's do this. One two, three, Nielsen, the whole thing.
Oh, okay, whole thing?Take two? All right, okay
ready, yeah, Ryland Nielsen,I am chin Gays, I am awesome.
(17:41):
Look at me and bask in mypresence. Dude. I do affirmations
in the washroom because the lightnings, right, and uh, I can't get
through the first sentence because after thatis like, I hate you. You're
the worst. Try better, Jimmy, how do you try better. You
can try harder, but why better? That's what's gonna give us the next
(18:03):
role? Okay, okay, likeevery time I because I've actually had people
reach out to me for advice aboutit, Like, how do you deal
with rejection? Because come on,like, how many jobs do you know
of that we get rejected on adaily basis? Right? Yeah, you
get job interviews all the time wherethey're like, well not today, we
found a better candidate, and yeahit hurts, but how many jobs do
you know that? That literally ispart of the job, having a job
(18:26):
interview and having it shut down inyour face. Right, Well, so
studying for a job is very weird, and you have to study every time.
You study every time. Learn thesetwo pages, learn these four pages.
Yeah just for a no, yeah, man, sometimes you just gotta
swallow that, swallow that ego withinyou and rechannel it into motivation to get
the next one. Is that whatyou tell people when they ask you you're
(18:48):
like, swallow it? Is thatyour well, I wouldn't say you have
to walk it calls you up,Hey, Ryland, I missed my part
again. Yeah, what you sayto that guy? Because it's gonna be
me. I'm gonna call. I'llcall you now, so I'm gonna help
my phone out there. If youjust start calling him. Hello, Oh
great chin, guys, hang up. Time to get that thrusting all day
again. Um No, Well,it's it's hard on anybody, right,
(19:11):
I imagine even like the big leagues, like say Leonardo DiCaprio, for example,
he probably years ago, Yeah,he probably would be like, oh
I didn't get that one, allright. But if you let it eat
you up, if you let itdestroy you, that's ultimately what's gonna say
if you're gonna make it or breakit in this industry, and you should
done that one as well. AndI'm trying to take shots at you or
(19:33):
anything, but I'm just trying tosay we've both been in this industry,
fallen hung enough, we know thatrejection is a daily factor in it.
And when some people think, oh, it's all the glitz and the glamour.
I can go around on big setsand right around on rolls royces,
it's like, no, like you'regonna get more rejection than you are the
appraisal, right right, right right? So um, but yeah, because
(19:55):
they see you once in a bluemoon on TV, or they see you
with some stupid red carpet thing orjust something or you know, oh I
got to talk to such and suchperson. You know, some star that
they've seen. Soho, who haveyou worked with? Man? You worked
with any famous type people? Let'sget back to you for a second.
Okay, I just worked with andwhat do you got to say, Steve?
(20:18):
That's funny, it's Stephen what sowhat? Yeah? Andrew Garfield one
time Spider Man. Yeah, hewas up here for um under the manner
of heaven? M m. Yeah, how did that go? Wait?
Great, you're super super nice guy. Okay, so we did. I
was one on one day with him, but I was literally sitting like right
next to him. Okay, andI didn't closer closer than this, Yeah,
(20:41):
okay, probably do you guys?Could you guys touch feet? I
would probably say so. I wasn'tgoing to, weren't going to not I
wouldn't know. I would have takenhow would Yeah, I get MJA running
after him? Had to gone rightfor those loafers. So what were you?
Uh? So, yeah, whatdid you do in the in the
thing? What was your um jock? Remember? Really? I mean Andrew
Garfields? Come on, guys,Yeah, every well yeah. The whole
(21:03):
day, I was just like,oh, but I don't know. I
heard he was very nice, helike some well, yeah, I didn't
even know how to talk to himme. And for that man, I'm
like, okay, do I Idon't know? Do I not? And
so at one point I just rememberhe had a prop Book of Mormon,
because why it was about the Mormons, and so I just okay, I
know who I'm not really supposed to, but I'm gonna break the ice.
(21:25):
Sid. I just casually look overat him like, so, uh,
is that a real Book of Mormonyou got there? Or is it just
a proper one? What do youmean? Well, I just curious.
No, no, let's find out. And so he literally opened up like,
oh, it's a real one.The next thing I know, we're
laughing it up and having fun.Obviously when we weren't shooting. I guess
once it's like, okay, backinto places. Okay, he's back to
(21:45):
his self, back in character. But yeah, when we weren't shooting,
me and him were talking, huckingit up, having a lot of fun.
Oh man, that's awesome. Yeah, I'll probably get in trouble for
doing that. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I asked, Kobe smolders if
showanted to sign my cast even thoughit wasn't even a real cast. Oh
yeah, we did high school together. Okay, there was a hospital scene
and I was a patient, hadmy arm in a cast and everything that
(22:07):
that's sure. If she wanted totell my cash, She's like, oh,
thanks, I'm good. Even thoughI was just like bad, It
just meant to look like a cast. It was real. It was just
your arm. Just I have.I have a very pale arm. Okay,
it's just seventeen rubber bands unto myarmpits every morning and now it took
sack days. Wait a second, wait a second? Uh? Was that
was that the girl from uh ohman, the show with all the boys
(22:33):
Jason Siegel and I met your mother? Yes, that's her, Kobe smolders,
Yeah, she's robbing, she's she'syeah, she's amazing. Stumptown.
Stumptown was great, but it neverI don't know, like one sees or
something so fun. She was alsoin the Marvel movies Y Maria Hill.
Yeah, awesome. I would nothave been able to like Andrew Garfield them.
Yeah all right, man, yes, but yeah, I don't think
(22:56):
I would have been able to standnext to her or sitting next to her.
She was nice. Yeah, doyou have any questions about the process
or what we're doing today? Whenwould you like to start? Have we
I thought were until maybe like twelveo'clock tonight. Okay, yeah, then
we'll get the interview going. Okay, I'll bring brownies, I'll have a
beard. Okay, yeah. Wecan even make a little fire pit here,
well, can make smores? Canwe do fires in here? I
(23:18):
think we can? No, one'son the other end, so you know
what, I'm gonna think. Gary'sfallen asleep. Gary is just like passed
out completely. He's he's uh.I wish we could flip the cameras around
because he's enthralled in this. Allright, I'm gonna go down to my
questions. Okay, start, how'dyou start? What got you interested?
These aren't great questions? Oh hey, man, you're related to someone that
(23:41):
I care for, deeply, caredfor deeply? Can we is it putting
that in the past tense? Ifyou're thin you're doing I'm putting it in
the past tense? Yakay, Well, you know, but like, can
we can we talk about can wetalk about that person or because I did
not know this, you're the interviewhere? Rip off the bandaid? Do
it not today? You? Howare how are you related to the late
(24:03):
great Robin Williams? He is myeighth cousin. Eighth cousin, Yes,
on my dad's side. Okay, what does that even look like on a
tree? I've got it on myphone. If you want me to go
grab and just know, let youknow all the details. Yeah, you
know what, do it afterwards andwe'll superimpose it. Uh, we'll get
our editor. If it more funweekend direct look to Fun. That's awesome.
(24:30):
Um. Can you ever get closeto working with that fellow? Yeah?
I actually Unfortunately I had to turnit down though, But I was
offered a bit part on Museum threewhen I were shooting over in BC and
I was supposed to share scene withhim, share screen time with him.
It would have been awesome, butlike I said, yeah, scheduling conflicts
gotten the way. Wasn't able toaccept it. And unfortunately that other project,
(24:52):
it was while I was doing thatone that I found out he passed
terrible. Can can you tell mewhat the other project was? I can?
Okay, Okay, you don't haveto as big as Night on the
music. Okay, it wasn't fullya project though. I was actually serving
a mission for my church. Ohokay, and yeah it was big.
Yeah, So I just didn't wantto think. I'm like, oh,
well that's not as fun. Okay. Yeah, No, I was serving
(25:15):
as miss Yeah, it depends onwhat door you knock on. But it
was for importance. No, it'stwo years of years just dedicated to helping
people, right, And yeah,I was out there, and I remember
one day I was just having aparticularly rough day. I was rather down
on myself. I guess. Iwas talking to one of the other missionaries
and out in the parking lot, sitting there in the car, and I
(25:36):
remember it. My phone was drinking. So I got to answer and I
see us one of the other missionaries, and he was the one that was
making me half a rough day.He was kind of a it was kind
of a difficult guy to deal with, I guess. But the point is,
I go to answer it, butI had this top pop in my
head. Answer the phone in yourmissus out fire voice. No, I'm
not going to do that. I'ma missionary, right, I need to
be dignified. Right, I'm notgoing to do that. So I go
to answering a lot man, gofor it, right, But again it
popped in my head. No,no, answer the phone, your missus
(25:59):
steff voice. Okay, sure,so I answered, Oh, hello,
dear, you've denied doubt, fairdear, and a hip or granny who
can hip up? Peep up dent. Still you dre up and you you'll
make a wicked cup of ku koo. Dude, the whole spiel. The
guy next me, he's laughing hishead off. I think another of it,
and as your the other mystery onthe other end of the phone,
he was just completely silent. It'slike, that's actually not funny. I
(26:19):
was calling, you know, theRobin Best Way today and he knew how
close I was to him, andit hit me like a ton of bricks.
The first thing I thought was like, it's got to be a one
of those Hollywood hoaxes, right, how many times do we hear Oh,
this guy's dead. No, he'snot right, So I thought, Okay,
that's gotta be it until it finallysunk in. I realized he's gone.
And that's the thing is his moviesmeant the world to me. When
(26:41):
I first saw Missus Doubtfire, thatwas the first time anybody in my life
ever told me that my parents divorcedwas not my fault. When I watched
Jumanji, that was the first timethat somebody said, you got to stand
up for those people who were hurtingyou, those things in life that scare
you. And every single one ofhis movies impacted me on a certain way.
So when I felt that feeling inmy head that day, I knew
he's still looking out for me.He still was trying to reach out and
(27:03):
me saying, hey, I knowyou're fighting, but keep going, keep
going. And unfortunately I deal witha lot of the same mental problems he
does. I deal with depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and there
are days where yeah, I wantto just call it quits, but I
know that no, gotta keep thatspirit of Robin alive, Gotta keep making
people laugh, keep them moving forward. And so that's what I strive to
do, literally, not only inmy own acting career, but in my
(27:23):
own personal life. I try toencapsulate his spirit, keep him, keep
his spirit alive. So that's whywhen you said, oh, putting him
in past tense. It's like,no, he's still alive through the people
that he touched, myself included,he is still alive and thriving. Yeah,
and even I like, even forthat matter, with my own depression
everything. I never started opening upabout it until just recently. Actually,
(27:44):
I was afraid I was going toget put off. I was afraid people
we're gonna be like, oh,great, another one of these guys.
But that's the thing. I rememberwatching Go to a Hunting first time I'd
ever seen it was after he passedaway, and I just murdered this moment
of him sitting there with Matt Damonand they have this great moment where he's
telling him, you need to reachout. You can't expect because you're an
orphan. You can't expect everybody toknow everything there is about you because they
(28:07):
read Oliver Twist. If you wantpeople to truly understand, if you want
them to know you, you needto open. You need to be as
open as a book. And Iremember that particular moment. I hadn't seen
it until he passed away, butthat was the moment that I knew he
was reaching out again, saying,Rylan, if you're ever going to get
over this depression. If you're evergoing to get over this feeling of inadequacy
and of self loathing, you gottaopen up. You got to talk.
(28:32):
And so now I've been able totalk about it. But after keeping a
bottle for almost thirty years, it'sit's a rather a difficult journey. It
is a journey that I'm still discoveringthings. But I see it as a
way of like improving myself, helpingothers while I'm trying to help myself.
So well, baby steps, morepower to you on that journey. Of
course, I was going to say, it's not your fault, but that's
(28:52):
I think that's I love that part. Yeah, I love a classic movie.
Yeah, I love them. Yeah, well that's great. I love
that he can still be giving andnot just you, but of course,
yeah, all people sort of.Well that's why he's my hero, right,
It wasn't just who he was onthe screen, is as well who
he was off the screen, right, Yeah, like and a full family
connection of course. Well, yeah, like my brother. He one of
(29:15):
his heroes is like Michael jack MichaelJackson, Michael Jordan. Okay, and
so I'm like, okay, that'sall good and fine, but I'm tolding
Michael Jordan's kind of a jerk inreal life. Yeah, I would say,
so, yeah, I've never metthe guy. I've never had that
little mustache for a while. Yeah, if you were going to say Michael
j Fox, I just actually that'syeah, huge fan. But oh you'd
be jealous. What I got todo then, come on quick, Okay.
(29:37):
One of the things I got todo when I was a kid.
Um we went to Universal Studios andthis is actually one of the moments that
made me want to pursue being inmovies. We went to Universal Studios and
they had this um exhibit where itbasically was showing the movie magic, showing
how movies are literally magic, right, and they wanted to use Back to
the Future as an example. Sothey wheeled out the Dolorian and they're like,
Okay, we need a kid fromthe audience to play him arm Marty
(30:00):
McFly and so yeah, I justtimidly like I'd like to give it a
shot. Sure, So they pickedme out, picked this other little girl
as my Jennifer I guess, andyeah, we literally got to sit in
the DeLorean while they're showing all theseeffects going around showing how it worked,
and it was one of those momentsthat it's like, I want to do
this now. Like that, orwhen I saw Jurassic Park for the first
(30:21):
time, watching the t Rex burstingout or a cage and just scaring people
for something that should not be happening, Like to me, movies are magic
tricks. We're watching something that shouldnot be happening, but yet it is.
That's to me what it encapsulated,Like, I want to make movies
too. Like I didn't know atthat point I wanted to be an actor.
I didn't know at that point ifI even could be an actor,
but I knew I want something todo with making movies, and so now,
(30:45):
yeah, like when I first movedhere, I was thinking, like,
Okay, nobody's gonna hire this twentysomething year old goofball just to be
an actor, and so I thought, Okay, why don't I just try
looking into directing or writing or somethinglike that. And yeah, I still
do it occasionally, but since movinghere, since I've actually won awards for
my acting work and everything, thatit's actually shown me that no, not
only can I do acting, butactually pursue it and actually be good at
(31:07):
it. So that's taking the frontseat right now. So awesome. Man.
Well, look um, that wasa lot of info and I super
appreciate your time and of course allof it. All right, I asked
you not to do that. Ohlisten, I think I think that's it.
Man, There's so much to workwith. Now, what are they
(31:29):
gonna do? Founders training orders onthis next Tuesday? Exactly? All right,
brother, thank you you stay there. I'm gonna get back to this
camera. Oh or my camera?Should I get your foul shot? Here?
