Now for riches take on Sports. Here's Richmond Weaver ready
to roll.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
This Wednesday right here on one O four nine Fox
Sports Upstate. And we appreciate all of the investors out
there spending your time listening. And this is part of
the new four hour programming that we have each weekday
here in the afternoon from three to seven pm, The
Richmond Weavers Show until five, and then at five o'clock
(00:42):
we'll hand things over to mister John Ellison Game On
and both are proudly presented by Ingles Markets. So make
sure you stay tuned right here to one O four
nine Fox Sports Upstate and you can listen however you
want to, either through your radio or the iHeartRadio app.
And we are going to be moving on a lot today.
Oh yeah, and musical chairs because we've got a ton
(01:05):
of guests. We have two calling in Brian Kite. We've
had on so many times Dailydiscipline dot Com. He's the
author of that newsletter and also coach to the coaches
does a great job in terms of when you're looking
at life in sports behavior performance improvements.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
So that will happen at three point thirty at four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
We also have Michael McGovern, the executive director of the
BMW Charity Program, I presented by TD cent X.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
He will be joining us.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I was at an event yesterday evening there at the
new PGA superstore over there on Woodruff Road, and it
was a great opportunity for the BMW Charity Program to
recognize all of the volunteers that help through the event.
Oh yeah, and I mean a ton of volunteers to
(01:56):
help run the entire week that they have.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Andancy Smith, who's been.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
The leader of all of the volunteers for the past
twenty five years. This was her last year a long time. Yeah,
so they were able to also honor here, honor her
and be able to celebrate her. And I think there's
a lot of people also a little bit of like
oh no, yeah, okay, And Michael McGovern might be one
(02:25):
of those. Yeah, it's like, okay, I've got to figure
out now, he's got a great team.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
They'll be okay.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
But you know how it is, and you have a
trusted leader. Oh yeah, it's huge, it's huge, it's a
big time. So we'll have Michael McGovern at the top
of the hour at four o'clock heading into our number two.
And also we will have an honor of high school
football that's going to be kicking off. And I know
(02:51):
there's some high schools that have already started, but here
in Greenville we know that this Friday we're going to
have games kicking off and Riverside Warriors. We got some
members of the football team going to joining in the studio. Yes,
just to get people hyped up. This is football week.
It is It is football week. Yes, next week is
(03:12):
week one, is what we're going to say, right, we know, yeah,
we do know, we do know of that. But in
the meantime, you know, you can join the conversation eight
six four two four zero five four eight zero. Again
that numbers eight six four two four zero five four
eight zero. And yesterday we had some great discussion and
(03:34):
this was centered around quarterback ranking all of that and
then leading into the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones, we know
the docu series is out right now, The Gambler, Yes,
and you and John do a much better job as
far as imitating Jared time, Yeah, but which.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I mean, you're a Cowboy fan.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I guess I listened to him basically, you know, for
thirty years. But I still I can't do it justice,
So go with you and John do it a lot better.
And John does a great job with that. And I
know he's been watching the docuseries and I haven't been
able to start watching it as of yet. And of
all things, my wife is a big Dallas Cowboys fan. Also,
(04:18):
she's gonna have a whole lot of interest in watching it.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Well, they're like, well, wait a.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Second, there's a different like, you're a Dallas Cowboys fan.
But from what I understand, it's a lot of Jerry Jones.
A lot of Cowboys fans aren't Jerry Jones fans.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
I can understand the hesitation. Yes, okay, yes, that's a
valid point. I didn't think of it from that lens.
And I do understand that because there is a lot
of frustration, as far as rightfully so, Dallas Cowboys fans
and the frustration of yes, you see the Dallas Cowboys
continue to be in the news. The hype, oh yeah
(04:53):
is consistently there. People want to talk about the Dallas Cowboys.
And yes, as a Dallas cowb Boys fan here in studio,
we have a little bit of a memorabilia, a little paraphernalia,
however you want to describe it. For the Dallas Cowboys.
You see the star, it's iconic. Yeah, it's something that
is easy recognized. It's easily recognized.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
And so there is that part.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
And I know people still are asking, and this was
what yesterday I heard you and John talking about the
Dallas Cowboys and are the Dallas Cowboys still America's Team, right?
And how would you define that? And if they're not,
who is? And you know, so there's so many tentacles
we can go down the road. But I'm just curious
(05:37):
also though, from the Dallas Cowboys and the America's Team
Moniker that is labeled on them, And it goes all
the way back to nineteen seventy eight when you're talking
about NFL films and how it was described there. And
this was again at a time where I mean you're
talking about consistent success. Tom Landry the head coach, tech
(06:01):
Sram the owner there. I mean you had stability there
and yes, you were winning, You're writing super Bowls, Yes, exactly,
and so there was a gravitational pool because of that,
you were winning. But it showcases now that when you're
seeing the Dallas Cowboys and how they're not winning in
(06:25):
the postseason. They haven't been to the NFC Conference championship
since they won the Super Bowl in nineteen ninety five,
practically my whole lifetime. Yeah, I past thirty years. Yeah,
I mean that's insane. But for them to still be
talked about as much as they have been, I mean,
it does just show that the Cowboys brand, I'm sorry,
(06:46):
it's it remains unmatched.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
It just really does. And they consistently lead the TV ratings.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I mean, we talked about it. I mean, the highest
rated Thanksgiving game involves the and they're thinking they're going
to break the record this Thanksgiving. When you've got the
Chiefs and the Cowboys, they probably will. They probably will.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Now, obviously we know the Chiefs are making that rise
in terms of their popularity from a national perspective, and
then you throw in Taylor Swift, you know all of that.
I do get that, But I'm just looking at the
Dallas Cowboys. I mean, the cultural footprint of the Cowboys
is so huge and That's what I think is the
(07:30):
difference here. And again you can talk about the on
field struggles and the skepticism, and I'm right there, you know,
looking at the Dallas Cowboys trying to figure out, Okay,
why can't we win? And I'm saying we as a fan,
why can't the Dallas Cowboys have success in the postseason?
We've seen the financial dominance, right, it's the most value. Yeah, yes,
(07:55):
it's the most valued sports franchise pro sports franchise in
the world. We were talking almost thirteen billion dollars. I mean,
it's insane. So I just wonder you know that it's
showing us that it doesn't hinge just on wins. It
(08:17):
doesn't just mean that to be a successful franchise that
you have to have X number of championships. I just
feel that it's more of a societal cultural type of
thing that it's something that we can gravitate towards.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
And the Moniker just seemed to fit back then, yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Because if you remember, I mean that's what it was,
America versus the world, America versus Russia, and so it
was you had this pride of America's team and you
gravitated towards that, and then you started having success into
the eighties and then obviously there in the nineties you
were winning Super Yes, you were having you know, players
(09:04):
like an Emmett Smith, like a Michael Irving, Troy Yateman.
I mean you had stars that were on your team,
including the Star. Again, I think there's something to be
said that it's almost a scenario that plays out.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Where things in life. It's about timing.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Oh, right place, right time. Yes, that's how i'd sum
up the Cowboys there for America's team exactly.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
It just happened to be that it was the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
And when you think cowboys, oh, it's American. I was
just about to go into that's Japan has Ninja's. You
think about Greece had you know, gladiate, or Rome had gladiators.
America has cowboys. It's American mythology. So it sums it
up perfectly. Right place, right time. You've got the star,
that's so simple, it's so recognizable. It's on the flag,
(09:53):
so it ties in there. Yes, I think the problem
with the Cowboys obviously they went on to win and
that was great. I don't think it matters. The Cowboys
could probably never win another NFC championship in the history
of football and still be America's team because I feel
like it's been reduced to a tagline, no doubt, that's all.
It does not mean what it meant to be when
it first came out. Now it is just oh, that's
(10:15):
Dallas Cowboys. They're America's team.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
You just it rolls off the tongue and you just
say it so flippantly it doesn't matter. It's almost like
it's trademarked for the Dallas Cowboys. That's a good way
to put it. It basically is that. Yeah, it basically is, yes,
And I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
It's you know, certain things in society just seem to
play out based on well again we've talked about it.
Well that's how it's been done in the past, right,
and so it just seems to carry on generation after generation.
I mean, look at the things we do in the world.
I mean there's certain things that are faux pas, you know,
(10:51):
or you know, you need to do it this way,
and I think this kind of falls in line that.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Yeah, it just it's just America's team and it's just
what they are here. Yes, it is.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
I don't know if anybody can actually overcome that moniker
to take it away from the Cowboys based on the
long history going all the way back to nineteen seventy
eight with NFL films.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yeah, I mean, it just is what it is now.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yes, you know, and I know there's some people that
are mad that they don't like that it's America's team.
And I get it because there's also, hey, if you're
going to be an America's team, you better win.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
I get that you need to have success.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
That's a valid especially when you're being talked about as
much as the Cowboys are.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, and I think that's what can make fans mad.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
I just don't know that there could be another America's team,
because I'm telling you, if they are the Dallas Badgers,
I don't think they would have been America's team. It's
because they're the Cowboys. Because the Cowboys are American. It
just fits so perfectly with the branding. I don't think
you can have another America's team. And if they ever
change their name, then maybe that's where they lose the
moniker based on the star, based on the logo, the
(11:58):
color scheme, all of that at and it's in Texas. Yep,
it just fits so much because Texas seems to be America.
And I know that's a very general statement, but I
still think it's going to be America's team. It's the
Dallas Cowboys, all right.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
When we come back, we're going to be joined by
some high school football players from Riverside, the Riverside Warriors,
taking over the studio here at one o four nine
Fox Sports Upstate as The Richmond Weaver Show presented by
Ingles Markets continues right after this, Hey, baby, won't you
(12:39):
lose my way?
Speaker 6 (12:40):
I can be your new dishes.
Speaker 7 (12:44):
Hey, maybe what you gotta say all you'll give s
me is fix'm the sybisucle And this happens.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
All the time.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
I find out that everybody's out, everybody's ouse, everybody's house.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
It's sided with the weird.
Speaker 8 (13:04):
And east.
Speaker 9 (13:08):
Least fat.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
The Wednesday edition of The Richmond Weavers Show presented by
Ingles Markets continues right here on one oh four nine
Fox Sports Upstate, and we are jam hacked here in
studio now, I mean we have a full studio because
we know high school football is right around the corner
kicking off this Friday night, and so why not have
(13:38):
some local support local team, Riverside Warriors are represented here
in the studio today as they will be kicking off
on Friday against mall Than at seven point thirty.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
They're at Riverside. You can get tickets, yes, so make
sure you get out there.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
High school football is here. We are excited because it
is football week. So let's go through the introductions here.
We've got five teammates here from Riverside, so go ahead,
step up to the mic and let everybody know.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Who you are.
Speaker 10 (14:08):
Yes, there getting a Murdher Classic twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 11 (14:11):
Quarterback Marquise Skinner class of twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Left tackle my eighty class twenty twenty six. Wait for
US committe.
Speaker 9 (14:16):
He has in gonai On class of twenty twenty six.
Speaker 8 (14:19):
Defensive end Adrian Stancil class of twenty twenty six.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Anywhere on the d L.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Anywhere on the DL sir, Okay, not disabled list, but
we're talking to defensive line. Yeah all right, So Adrian,
let's start with you and then we'll kind of go
around the horn here. What was summer like getting ready
for this upcoming season?
Speaker 8 (14:38):
I mean we worked really hard.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Every day.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
We'd come out for four and a half hour practices,
we'd lift condition I mean, the boys been putting in
a lot of work. We're ready, we're ready for the season,
ready to get at it.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Okay, so you already sound like a coach. You already
sound like you've got this trained. You have to answer
a certain way. How tough was summer though? That's what
I want to know.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
Summer. I mean it was really hard. It was hard
on the bulls. But we know that each day we
put in the work and it comes out. I mean
it'll show during football season, like we're conditioned, we're strong.
We look really good this year. Okay, I'm proud of
all the boys.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
I love it all right, here we go, Yeah, Shark,
I love the name out in the world.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Did that nickname come about?
Speaker 7 (15:17):
So basically, like my second last name is sharkas and
I just kind of like took out the a s
swim it and I do TikTok so I bade.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
That might user name and that kind of just went around.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
There you go. I love it all right. I need
to hear from the quarterback though.
Speaker 8 (15:34):
First.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Okay, we know how important quarterback position is. So when
did you want to be a quarterback?
Speaker 10 (15:41):
I always want to be a quarterback, you know, Marcus Mariota.
Oh yeah, I always looked out to him, Go Ducks.
I always been a big fan of him, and just
I liked how he played and I always wanted to
be like him.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Okay, all right, So what do you feel that your
best skill set.
Speaker 10 (15:54):
Just making something happen, making a big play, happy like
it breaks down, I'm gonna make something happen.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Okay, all right, So now let's hear from the trenches though,
I mean, we got to hear from the big boys.
Talk to me about how excited you are with this
upcoming season.
Speaker 11 (16:10):
I'm very excited. I feel like last year I did
I didn't really show myself a lot. So this year
I'm trying to make a name out of myself. Okay,
so what I got? All right, So give me the
scoop in your summer? Then would you do in this
offseason to try to get to that point? Just a
lot of grinding, hard work. I had camps, a lot
of college camps coming up with summer workouts. Just like
(16:30):
Asian said, summer workouts, just a lot of conditioning, sprints.
All that just pays off lifting. There you go, all right?
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Shut down corner, talk to me.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
And receiver.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Okay, all right, so what do you prefer? Do you
like defense better corner defense? Why's that?
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Because that's just where my heart of course?
Speaker 2 (16:50):
All right, So I do need to ask you then too,
because I know, even from a quarterback perspective, you have
to have amnesia. You make a bad play interception, you've
got to be ready for the next and even on
a good play, doesn't the cornerback have to have the
same type of mentality, because yes, you have to have
that type of mentality. All right, Adrian, let's come back
to you getting ready for the season. It's Malden Friday night.
(17:15):
Let's go with the feeling, right now. How hyped are you?
Speaker 8 (17:18):
I mean, it's crazy. I'm so ready. It's my last
year's senior year. We're gonna go all out, put my
life on online for these boys. I'm gonna protect them,
hit hard, make plays, and we're gonna have a great year.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
All right. So I'm gonna throw you guys for a
little bit of loop though.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
I know this is a non region game against Malden,
but when you start playing region games, that five a
Region two September twenty six. Sorry, guys, I gotta go
with Wade Hampton.
Speaker 10 (17:50):
Yeah, sorry, you got that.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
My loyalty is still live with the general on all right.
So yeah, talk to me about region and how you
feel the sea since it's going to go.
Speaker 7 (18:01):
Yes, sir, So last year we kind of took a
step back with a lot of injuries and whatnot, and
ever since then, we felt like we just needed to
come back up. You know, we've been waiting in a
year for for this opportunity to come and show our
our talent, our skills to these other schools, colleges. You know,
like Adrian said, all summer, all spring, we've just been
(18:22):
putting in that work and you know, whether it's reagion
or not, I feel like we're still going to go
out there, play our hearts.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Out and we're just going to dominate every day.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Yeah all right, So what do you want to tell
the fans Riverside?
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Let's go show out? Yes sir?
Speaker 2 (18:37):
Okay, big one Friday night again, Smallden. All right, So
now I do want to turn a little bit of attention.
You talked about Oregon, yes, sir, okay, So tell me
your thoughts on is Oregon going to be the.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
Team this year.
Speaker 10 (18:49):
Yes, yeah, I already know they are.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
And why do you feel so confident about that?
Speaker 10 (18:53):
I mean, we were good last year. We played a
good Ohio State team in the playoffs. Yeah, we had
a rough I start. We're going on defeating and winning
the Natty again.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Okay, when did you become an Oregon fan?
Speaker 10 (19:04):
It's Marcus Mariota, So my dad. Yeah, my dad went
there the college and then he just kind of brought
it on to me.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
All right, So, Adrian, I see you've got the Clemson
gear on, so go Tigers as a Clemson grad over here.
But I need to know everybody else. Obviously, we know
we've got to wait for us commit, so we know
where your loyalties lie. But where is everybody feeling as
far as college football and the excitement that at.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Least football week is here. You know, we've got the
big game for you guys on Friday, but just the
general feeling that football is back, It's great.
Speaker 8 (19:35):
I'm excited Clemson opens up playing LSU at home. I'm
going to see who the real Death Valley is. We
have season tickets for that game, so I'm really excited
to come out for that, it has to be a
great game.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
All right, Timmy, talk to me, give me the scoop
on your team.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
Cos.
Speaker 11 (19:53):
As just started off. I'm just everything my dad is.
My dad is a Duke fan in basketball. I'm just
a Duke fan in basketball football. It's not so I
feel like last year they I feel like last year
they got seated out a playoff game. I feel like
a lot of games, like against LSU and Autumn, I
think they should have won that. Alabama's I think they
should have won that. But that's why I really that's
what I like.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Well, there is definitely something to be said about maybe
a little bit of assistance from the referees there down
in Columbia for LSU, and there'll be some payback this
year as the game Cocks will travel to Baton Rouge.
And as a Clemson grad, I also have a little
bit of allegiance to South Carolina because my daughter goes there,
so she's a senior there.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
And I'm a big proponent of Hey, let's have both
teams being really really good.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
That's best for the state and also it makes the
Clemson South Carolina rivalry game even better, sir, and I
think they're going to have a special season, and you
can listen to the games right here in one of
four nine Fix Sports Upstate. We are the Upstate affiliate
for the Game Athletic or Radio Network. So yes, you
can catch all of the excitement here. All right, with
(21:00):
your thoughts on wake Forest this year though.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
They building this year, they should have a good year.
Putting in that work. Coach doing a good job with
the dB, so they should have a good year this year.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Yeah, I think there's gonna be a little bit more
excitement and sneak up on you know, some of the
teams there in the a CC. So again, congratulations there,
all right, yeah, let's talk to me.
Speaker 9 (21:20):
Yes, sir, I think Miami Hurricanes got it all the
way this year. Crystal Ball and Garson Beck. I feel
like he's gonna lead.
Speaker 7 (21:32):
He's gonna lead the team all the way, especially you
know with his UH skills, like he's able to actually
see the field.
Speaker 5 (21:41):
He's not gonna fall under pressure. And I feel like
it's gonna be a great year for us.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
All right, all right, here's the other question, And I
don't know, is everybody an NFL fan?
Speaker 3 (21:51):
That's my question?
Speaker 2 (21:52):
S Okay, So I know yesterday we were actually talking
about the Dallas Cowboys, and I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
All right, Oh, I hear that. I a sigh over there.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
So I need to know from all of you guys,
do you consider the Dallas Cowboys still America's team.
Speaker 10 (22:10):
I think they're America's team because everyone alwayshypes them up,
Like everyone says they're gonna have a good year, and
they just sell every year. So I feel like they
just always have hype around them for no reason.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
They good or bad or bad.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Yes, and they're they're polarizing team, and it might not
just be based on wins, but they have some type
of cultural effect that we continue to view them.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
As America's team, all right, or who is America's team?
Speaker 11 (22:34):
I'll go back off what Giddy said.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
I feel like they are.
Speaker 11 (22:36):
But at the same time, it's like when it's time
for them to show up, they just don't show up.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
And that's what's so frustrating as a fan. Yeah, I
don't like that at all. All right, talk to me.
Speaker 11 (22:46):
I don't really watch NFL like that, but Robbie watching
is like dad can't get a job done.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yes, it is very difficult.
Speaker 7 (22:57):
Yes, I feel like they got some crazy calling. They
can't run the right plays at the right time. And honestly,
if we're talking about America's team, I feel like the
Chiefs are taking over.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
You know what, we'll see when the season comes around.
Speaker 8 (23:12):
There we go, alright, Adrian, Yeah, I don't know much
about the Dallas Cowboys. I'm I'm more of a New
York Giants fan, but I think they might have a
good season. I mean, like they said, Dak Prescott does
usually sell for them. But I guess we'll see when
the season comes around.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Wednesday Edition and other Richmond Weavers Show presented by Ingles
Markets continues right here on one of four nine Fix
Sports of State and had a fantastic time right there
with the Riverside Warriors football team, several of the members
here to get ready for the big game on Friday.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
I don't know if they like that.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
My allegiance still is with Wade Hampton Generals there as
Mike d All three my kids went there.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
I get it.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Yeah, it seemed too thrilled, but we had a good
time there. And yes, high school football is here. It
is football week. We are excited. Yes, the countdown has begun.
And as we mentioned, if it's an opportunity to talk performance,
talk sports life, behavior, performance talk to the coach, to
(24:44):
the coaches, We've got to bring in our good friend,
Brian Kite Dailydiscipline dot com. Make sure you check out
that website and subscribe so you can get the Daily
Discipline newsletter delivered to your inbox each weekday.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
B k how are you, my friend?
Speaker 2 (25:01):
I know you're right in the midst of all of
this football talk getting ready, so catch us up to speed.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
How are things going in your world?
Speaker 6 (25:10):
Listen, man, I don't know if I'm more excited to
have this conversation with you or just throw that music
back on just by like I was feeling it right there. Yes, sir,
you have me, You had me in my fields. I
was ready to just keep it going.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Hey why not?
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Hey, we might have to have that, just as our
music bad, as we talk each conversation.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Right, yes, exactly.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
I'll tell you what I'm in.
Speaker 8 (25:34):
I'm in.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Uh uh, this is gonna this is gonna sound like
it's gonna sound like I'm name dropping a big time
in here. But it's just what happened. I'm here. I'm
in Birmingham, Alabama. Got in late last night, got into
the hotel. I've got a business client that I'm working with.
I got in real late last night, had some delays
and been super focused on them. And I'm traveling around
trying to get back this weekend on time so I
(25:56):
can make it to my son's game, which I'm coaching
and just having paid attention. And I and I look
outside my hotel and I saw there's like some stadium
last night, and I didn't see what it was. I
went to bed, it was late, got up this morning
and I said, hey, who's that at? What's that stadium
over there? They said that that's uab AT that's the
University of Alabama Birmingham over there the Dragons, and Trent
Dilford is the head coach over here right across the street.
(26:18):
So I text, I text Trent this morning, and I've
came over to practice, so I'm I'm here. I got
to deliver a keynote to a corporate client tomorrow. I'm
gonna go talk to the team at seven am. And
then I'm before that, So I gotta tomorrow, and now
I gotta go talk to the Dragons fire breathers only
in the morning, and then right after that, I gotta
go do a keynote to the business right after it.
So and then I'm heading out to another client in Madison.
(26:40):
I'm gonna go swing by and see the Badgers on
Friday after I do that keynote. So this league has
taken on a whole new turn for me.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Oh, I love it, absolutely love it. Hey, and you
can keep name dropping all day long. I like hearing
some of the individuals that you're talking to. How many
teams do you go visit during the course of an
off season and then even heading into a season, I mean,
I mean it it it.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
Always, you know, it always varies rich, but you know,
this year is a little lighter because I'm trying to
be around for more for for my son's practices game
So I'm a little I'm a little a little lighter
this season. This obvi, this lead in, you know, but
I honestly I have There's so many sports and they're
year round, right, So it's basketball, baseball, golf, football, rugby.
(27:24):
I mean, I work with I work with sports of
every kind and that and the seasons are always on hockey, right,
seasons are always on these different rotations, so there is
no real on or off season. The only season, the
only the only month that's really odd, I would say
slower off to me is July, just because nobody's really
doing anything during July and baseball is in season, so
they're not they're not doing anything work wise, you know,
(27:49):
in July. So July is not the only month from
a sports perspective and a business perspective that everybody takes
a little breather. Yeah, it's a lot, though, I mean
it's I don't know, thirty to fifty teams a year.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Well, and it makes sense that it's not the things
that you talk about and behavior, performance and being able
to perform the best that you can be it's not
just about football.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
I mean there's other sports. So yes, there's no.
Speaker 6 (28:18):
Popular sport like I love football, right, But that's that's
really it's just it's just because it's a sport I
played and the one that has commands the most attention,
that's right.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Brian Kite is our guest here on the Wednesday edition
of The Richmond Weaver Show, presented by Ingles Markets and
again author of Daily Discipline newsletter. Check it out at
Dailydiscipline dot com. And so you talked about the off season,
and I'm curious from your perspective because you've been doing
this a while and again, you played college football, You've
been in the midst of it when you talk about
(28:50):
off season. Have you seen how things have changed over
the past twenty years where there really is no off season.
I mean these student as athletes and also even professionals.
I mean it is a year long scenario playing out
where they're continuously and consistently doing something about the sport
(29:12):
they're playing.
Speaker 6 (29:14):
It's wild. And and I'll tell you, I'll tell you,
you know, for the athletes, and there's I mean, listen,
we could open up a whole bunch of conversations about
before college it starts. We're ruining kids. We haven't even
really seen the we haven't come to grips with the
physical detriments, but you see it with all the achilles.
(29:34):
I know, we talked a little bit about it. But
the big thing, the big thing is less for the
athletes in college. You know, they're doing stuff, but you know, listen,
they're getting paid, they want to They're they're both getting
paid and chasing big dreams and there's a certain amount
of work and the amount of the quality of what
these what these college kids get now, it's unbelievable. I
mean it is spectacular, like the development that they get
(29:58):
across the board. But where it's really difficult it is
for the coaches. The what has happened in college for
how much time? Being frankly, even like competitive in college,
even competitive, I'm not even talking about being championship level
right your Clemson's Bama as the highest states of the world.
(30:21):
I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about being like
a really competitive team. And then and then to even
to excel what it takes from coaches now, the amount
of time and energy, I mean, they quite literally do
not get time off. I'm talking in a year, they
might get two weeks. And I don't mean like your
job and my job. I'm talking consuming from sun up
(30:45):
into ten pm, but for two weeks. And that sounds
like an exaggeration, brother, that is how it is. So
you see a lot of guys. If you don't love
doing that, you're out. And they use the way to
see a lot of guys, a lot more guys. I
don't know way to league because it's just not like that, right.
They actually got to texting. The guy who went to
the league this year hasn't even gone through a season,
(31:06):
and I've just texted the other day. I'm like, how
is it? And he's a full on position coach, right,
He's like it's he goes I have a life back, Wow,
like a life is separate from football. I actually have,
Like I get to see my children, I get to
spend time with my wife, I get so you know,
you know, I guess I had to say that from
like an awareness of you know, there's the crowd that's like, well,
if you want it, then you got to get sure. Yes, yes,
(31:28):
if you want it, you in there. But man, these
are human beings who who are doing things that most
people who criticize them would be unwilling to ever do
no matter how much you got paid, because you just
couldn't handle it. You do it for two years and
then you'd be fried right, you'd be like, I'm out.
And he guys doing it for ten twenty years. So
it's a huge deal.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
It is a big deal.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
And the burnout factor that you're describing because there is
no time off. And that's why I think it's so
important to be able to somewhat re energize your batteries
and be able to focus on more of the inner
self necessarily. And as much as we talk about these
student athletes and athletes in general during the off season,
(32:12):
and you know they're continuing to try to improve, but
don't you think it's just so vitally important for these
coaches which are describing that they have the opportunity to
get coached so they can be better coaches for their athletes.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
You know, they have to, especially in today's environment. You know,
again we can say football, but it it's a lot
of sports. The ball just happens to be the one
with the largest staffs. So you see this the being
in the skills that you learn coming up through football
as a coach now are not the skills required to
be a head coach. It's really on you know, it's
(32:50):
really on the coaches coming up to try to put
it together yourself on how to be an effective head coach.
And the problem is they I think we've talked about it,
but they try to copy somebody else and they end
up they end up walking on somebody else's path and
save into easy when you got lot of people out
there trying to copy Saban and they're they're not like him.
They just want his success. That's not who they are,
(33:12):
or they you know, they copy Belichick or you know again,
whoever the guy is. And so you know, one of
the things I'm doing is is is building essentially a
head coach's academy where you know, for for a lot
of these guys, you know, even high school coaches. You
see this a lot. You know, we don't we don't
know how to be running an organization of that size
(33:33):
in it commit these bigger high schools. You know, you're
running an organization inside of a high school and with
the parents and then the boosters and all that. It's huge.
It's massive. Now, So you know, this this process of learning.
You know, I call it institutional leadership. Institutional leadership. It's
(33:53):
one thing to lead a group of receivers or o line, right,
you have a pretty clear line of site, you know
where they are. It's a group ten guys. But what
about leading two hundred people within with and then parents
and then teachers and administrators and volunteer coaches and other coaches.
That's a completely different ball game. And so you know,
I'm in the process of building this head coach academy
(34:14):
where you know, these up and coming coaches can begin
to develop their their head coaching structure, if you will,
of their of their own, so that they're not recreating
who somebody else is and then learning three years after
becoming a head coach that basically the model I built
was a model that worked for somebody else but not
for me.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Heartbreaking, yes, And that sets you back that you the
time that you think you were trying to be authentic
to yourself, you actually weren't because you were following some
other pathway that you thought would be successful. So again
it's that you know, opportunity calls scenario that plays out,
all right, So I do want to, yeah, what you
(34:56):
see by the way.
Speaker 6 (34:57):
Well, you see what you see in that. There's one
thing on one one thing you see on that because
you guys be able to watch this. Here's what's really hard,
even when a coach recognize it. It's really hard to
change directions, Yes, because you lose so much credibility. And
so if you're the head coach at you know, UNC
or South Carolina or Clemson or whatever, you know, whatever place,
if there's some new coach coming in, you try. It
doesn't work to try to change gears and get back
(35:18):
on the right path. Coaches feel committed to who they
have been right who they have been because they're so
afraid of changing it because they don't want to look bad,
and they stay on that path even after they recognize
it's not working. That happens way more than you think.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
And also, is there something to be said to Brian
that do coaches get enough time to actually pivot and
make a change and it's all about better win now?
Speaker 6 (35:46):
They could, but they're afraid to do it. Yeah they could,
but they're afraid.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Yeah, there's something about that, all right. So I do
want to then dive into something that I saw that
you posted, which I thought was really good, especially with
the E plus R equals oh equation. And we know
event plus response equals outcome, but how do you use.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
That in the correct way? And that's what I liked about.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
How you went through the steps of clarifying your target,
clarifying your situation, and then choosing the response that you
need to create the outcome that you want.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Explain that walk through the steps there.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
Yeah, so E plus R equals zoh, event plus response
equals outcome. The unfortunate part of how people hear it
is that we read and speak English left to right. Yes,
so we say events plus response equals outcome because that's
how it reads, and it works because it's simple. But
the downside of that is that event comes first, and
(36:46):
so when people read it, the reading of left to
right in English kind of primes the mind to use
e plus rcle zo to respond to events, and the
reality is we want to use e plus ricles zo
to create outcomes. Yes, that's the difference. If you use
epos circles oo to respond to events, that's passive. That
(37:10):
is allowing life to dictate to you, and then you're
going to try to respond to whatever life gives you,
which is part of life. It's part of it. Life
is going to give you things. However that can't be
your home base. Your home base can't be let me
wake up and then whatever life gives me, I'll That's
like getting in your car and then deciding where to
go based on what happens to you on the road. Now,
(37:31):
you get in your car and you say, I'm going
to go here, or I need to get there, or
I need to find this, and you start to steer
your car where you're trying to get it for what
you need to do, and then you just deal with
whatever unfolds in front of you on the road. Now,
when you have a two hour show to give to
you and my conversation, we will have the epos Cracle
zoo in Driving Conversation and we will use all two
(37:54):
hours of your show to start talking about the crazy
things that you do when you drive people and blame everybody,
but for now, for now, right if not the other
people aren't the crazy ones. For the record, you are second.
Speaker 8 (38:06):
Of all is it's.
Speaker 6 (38:10):
Ninety five percent of life is Start with the outcome
you want to create. What are you trying to make happen?
Then then keep that in your target focus. Then here's
the best thing I can tell you. Treat the events
you experience as the playing field that you're gonna use
(38:30):
to create the outcomes you targeted. Did the difference? Yes,
I'm not waiting to see what outcomes I can get
from the events I have. I'm saying, these are the
outcomes I'm gonna go create, and I'm gonna go pursue
and chase and tackle, and then whatever events happen, that's
just the playing field on which I'm going after my outcomes.
(38:52):
And every now and then an event will happen that will,
in fact change one of the outcomes you have to pursue.
That happens sometimes, but you can't let it happen all
the time. Events do not dictate outcomes, and they can't
limit the outcomes that you decide what to pursue. It's
got to be outcome first, event second. And then here's
how you say it. For the outcome, how do I create?
(39:16):
What is the response I need to create the outcome
I want given the events I have. That's right, I'll
say it one more times. You can hear it. How
do what is the response I need or responses I
need to create the outcome I want given the events,
I have no doubt.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
But so many times though, okay that the events they
completely sidetrack what we're trying to create, that outcome that
we want, and we fall victim to those How can
we have tried to reduce that?
Speaker 8 (39:50):
So we would? We would?
Speaker 6 (39:51):
You know, if I if I was coaching somebody and
somebody said, you know, the events are sidetracking the outcomes
I want to create, I would say, tell me how?
And here here's here's the question. Are the events genuinely
sidetracking your outcomes? Or is your response to those events
sidetracking out there? So let's just say you and I
have a conversation and and and I'm trying to get
(40:13):
you to understand something. And I'll put myself in this scenario. Okay,
I'm trying to get you. I'm giving you some feedback,
and I and I give you some feedback. And let's
just say you get defensive like like people do. And
I get defensive. And then somebody comes back to me
and they say, hey, you know, did Richmond get this?
And I'm like, no, he got you got super defensive.
That's me, right, that's me saying my response didn't get
the outcome I wanted. So it was the event's fault.
(40:34):
In this case, you it was your fault. I didn't
get the outcome I wanted. No, you didn't respond well
to my feedback. It's on me to adjust how I'm
responding to you so that you get the feedback. If
the outcome is right. Rich has got to understand this
and he's got to grasp it. I'm not allowed to
use your defensiveness as an excuse for why we didn't
(40:55):
get the outcome. I have to adjust my response knowing
that you get defense to say, all right, here's what
I'm gonna do it. I'm either gonna push through or
I'm gonna empathize, or I'm gonna love on him, or
I'm gonna challenge him, or i'm gonna like, Hey, I'm
gonna like tam, I'm gonna wrestle with it and take
into the turf on this and be like, hey, shut
that defensive this stuff down right. I almost said a word.
You guys have to bleep out. Shut that defensiveness stuff
(41:16):
down right, and then and then get to the outcome.
I don't get to blame the event. You can't blame traffic.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Why you weren't on time, That's right.
Speaker 6 (41:25):
You can't blame a delayed flight for why you got mad.
It's it's on you to adjust to the events. And
then every now and then, every now and then. You know,
again I talked, it's like, you know, my dad died
of cancer last year or a year and a half ago, Like, yes,
there are events that do, in fact, genuinely change outcomes.
He can't watch my son players first year of tackle.
That's an uncontrollable factor. And it's there because there's no
(41:47):
response I could have done to affect the outcome. But
if there are responses that you can engage in that
could or can affect the outcome, it's on you to
do them. It's not the events job to adjust itself
to your preferred response.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
Preferred response, that's right.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
And maybe you've been watching me drive in traffic for
the past few days or so, because I've actually mentioned
this to to Trey here in studio that and I'm
trying to get more margin in my life because I'm
in traffic and I'm mad at the person at the
green arrow that's not turning with the green arrow, and
because I'm when you.
Speaker 6 (42:27):
Like when you yell at them in the car, like
do they ever do they ever listen to you? They
ever take give thumbs up and say, hey, I wasn't
driving very well, but now that you've coached me from
the inside your car, I totally get it now, thank you.
Speaker 5 (42:38):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
Yes, oh well of course they do.
Speaker 6 (42:42):
Should you in your car being mad? Now you tell
me who's the crazy person.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
I'm the crazy person, Yes, exactly, that's what I That's
what I told Trey.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
It was like, it's my fault.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
This is I'm the problem here. It's not these people.
It's it's my problem. So I absolutely love it. All right, BK.
We gotta let you run because we got to hit
this break. And I know you've got a thousand things
going on, but it is football week, football starting this Saturday,
and then obviously the big ones will be the following Saturday.
Speaker 3 (43:12):
Excited about that.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
And I know you got your eyes on that Texas
Ohio State game on August the thirtieth, So get ready.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
We are here, my friend.
Speaker 6 (43:20):
I'm just fired up. The next time we get to talk,
we will be talking actual Yes, you.
Speaker 3 (43:25):
Got it, all right, brother, I appreciate it. BK. Have
a great day. Ye all right.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
That is Brian Kite, author of Daily Discipline newsletter. You
can find out more information at dailydiscipline dot com. The
Coach to the coaches, they're gonna hang out with Trent Dilfer,
You a b that's pretty cool, just dropping names, just
dropping names, Yes, exactly. That is a Super Bowl champion.
Speaker 8 (43:47):
It is.
Speaker 3 (43:47):
Well, you hung out with Tim Hasselback. Yes, well, that's right,
so I did drop that yesterday.
Speaker 5 (43:51):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
Yeah. So hey, we're just following suit with each other.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
All right, we got to hit this break much more
of the Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets right
after this. Oh no, sir, you can't be down today
on this Wednesday, Wednesday hump day, mister Trey Falco behind
the board and behind the mic as always. But you're
going to be out tomorrow, I am, yes, yes, heading
up to watch the Steelers play, to watch well and
(44:16):
not Will Howard to be, Skyler Thompson and Mason Rudolph.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
Oh there you go, okay, taking on Andy Dalton? Is
Andy Dalton back? Is he ready to go? Oh that's
a good point. I had looked.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
Yeah, I just kind of assume since he was the backup,
I know, Bryce Young probably play for a little bit,
at least as far as I know.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
I haven't heard anything, and he's not going to be playing.
Speaker 2 (44:35):
I think Andy Dalton was banged up a little bit,
so yeah, we'll see whoever's behind him.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
I go, yeah, okay, preseason. So you're excited about it, huh.
I'm excited to go to the game. Yeah, it's meaningless,
but it's still football.
Speaker 2 (44:46):
It's still football. Yep, there is something to be said
about that. It is still football. As we continue talking
sports here and football obviously because it is football week,
that's right, and the Richmond Weavers Show presented by Ingles
Markets right here on one of four nine five Sports Upstate,
and at the top of the hour we are going
to switch a little bit of gears into some golf.
(45:06):
We'll talk with Michael McGovern, the executive director of the
BMW Charity Program presented by td CINX, and get a
little bit more insight heading into somewhat of the off
season for the tournament and getting ready for next year
in June. As I know he's already probably planning, especially
when you have a lot of volunteers that you have
(45:28):
to incorporate into the event and to help out, and
they did a great job honoring and celebrating the volunteers
last night at the PGA superstore over there on Woodruff Road,
and also programming. Note, we will be down at the
Tour Championship in Atlanta at East Lake. Yes, I'm definitely
looking forward to that, So we'll be there Thursday and Friday,
(45:51):
so stay tuned for coverage from down there. Definitely looking
forward to it, especially with Andrew Green, the golf course
architect who we've had on the show, and he did
the restoration of renovation a couple of years ago, so
I'm excited to really get to see first and forehand
what all he was able to do. All right, we
(46:13):
will continue our two of the Richmond Weaver Show, presented
by Ingles Markets is right after this
