(01:31):
podcast hour and then into hour two as we will
have Darren Angel from the Weisch Law Firm joining us
for truth or Darren, and also we will talk some
South Carolina gamecog football. Yes we know SEC media days
are all wrapped up now. The preseason poll has come
out and what the media believes as far as who

(01:54):
are true contenders in the SEC and also preseason all
selection teams for team, second team, third team, all of that,
where does South Carolina rank? And we will talk to
Hale McGranahan from the Big Spur dot com in the
second hour live on one O four nine Fix Sports
Upstate and get a little bit of insight from somebody

(02:16):
who has covered the game cause extensively over the years.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
And Hale does a great.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Job being able to be objective but also in a
way that he's not afraid to call things out when
he sees them the way they are and how fans
South Carolina, how they want the respect that they deserve.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
But also there's a certain part.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Of it, you have to go and earn it, and
Hale does a great job of being very objective in
that manner and realizing, Hey, I'm listening to the fans
and this is what the fan base is talking about.
So South Carolina, these are the things you might want
to consider. These are the things that we also can

(03:03):
look at from an outsider perspective, knowing that, yes, you
might not know all of the details what's going on
inside the program, but if there's a guy who is
technically on the outside but does know a lot about
what's going on in the inside there at South Carolina,
that is definitely hel McGranahan from the Big Spur dot com.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
So definitely looking forward to that because we are going.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
To talk about the SEC media prediction as far as
who will win the SEC, the order that they think
that the teams will finish at the end of the season,
and then as we also mentioned, yes, we will look
at the first team and second team and how many
players from the South Carolina game Cocks we're on that list,

(03:48):
and knowing that this is a season where there's going
to be some expectations, there's going to be that opportunity
where you have the ability to to a certain degree
control some of the narratives. And again, this is one
of those things in life, the narratives you can't control.

(04:09):
But if you can continue to move the program forward
in a positive direction, obviously, then some of the narratives
start shaping themselves based on that. And that's the one
thing that I do like what I'm hearing from Shane
Beemer down there at South Carolina head coach obviously, and
just this scenario of the opportunity and how pressure is

(04:34):
a privilege, and that is a great thing that you
have these expectations. It is a great thing that you
have these people talking about your program. It is a
great thing that you have players that are being recognized
by being selected first team, second team, and that you
have these players that are also being recognized on a

(04:58):
national level, like Leonora Sell and when he's getting discussed
in terms of opportunity to be a Heisman Trophy candidate,
could he make it to New York? Could he be
that guy that comes out of nowhere? Basically based on
his story, And I think there's something also to be said.

(05:18):
You start liking some of these players, and you start
liking some of these teams. Now again, remember I am
a Clemson grad, So yes, I definitely will view things
with orange colored lenses at times. But also I'm not
above taking them off and being very objective about the

(05:40):
betterment of college athletics and college.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Football in general.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
And why wouldn't you want certain programs to be good
because we have seen it over the years.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
You just can't deny it.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
When certain programs are good and they're considered elite, it's
good for the entire sport. And that's I'm not trying
to take away anything from teams that are trying to
climb up and trying to be in that elite level,
because there is something about that you do have a
little bit of a revolving door that there are teams

(06:14):
that do come in and I think that we're going
to see that we're going to be afforded more opportunity
of seeing these teams that might not be the quote
unquote blue bloods, if we want to use that phrase
for college football, that they have the opportunity to be
included in the discussions, and the only way for that
to happen is through the college Football Playoff expansion. We

(06:37):
know that that's the reality of it, and so sitting
here at twelve, that is at least a huge step
forward outside of four Now the question is what's going
to happen. Is it going to go to fourteen or sixteen,
and how soon that will be? And I do agree
with some of the narratives out there that hey, we
don't have.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
To make a quick decision right now.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Let's see how it plays out for the next few
years with twelve teams that have made it. And I
loved what we saw this past year. It added a
lot of excitement and a lot of intrigue. And again
you got some teams that were in there that might
not normally be there, and.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
We had some good games. Were there some duds? Of course.
Do we see duds in the NFL playoffs? Yes?

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Do we see duds in Major League Baseball and even
the NBA with some of the series are so lopsided,
of course we do. That's just the reality of it.
But that doesn't mean the teams shouldn't be in the
playoffs and that the overall health of those leagues is
bad just because there's one or two dominant teams. That's
not it at all. But it is a good thing,

(07:46):
and that's what Shane Beemers talked about that you're in
those type of conversations. You have that opportunity to play
in the postseason meaningful games, and I know you can
say the bowl games still do mean something, and they
do when you're actually playing and you're on the field
and you're there. And also it does mean something for

(08:08):
the community because they do have the ability to host
the two teams to host the event and the camaraderie
that comes along with that. But from a college football side,
growing the sport, it is about the postseason, in the
college football playoff, and that's what is intriguing, and that's

(08:30):
why Shane Biemer is talking about just give us the opportunity.
It's okay if we have a target on our back,
we don't care. We'll take that target all day long.
And that's the right attitude that you have to have.
And we talked about it yesterday with Brian Kite, author
of Daily Discipline newsletter and you can find out all

(08:51):
of his information at dailydiscipline dot com. And I've been
a follower of Brian's for a long time and the
content that he puts out there is so authentic and
so versatile and so I guess straightforward and a little
bit of that almost punch you in the nose type

(09:11):
of content that you know certain things and especially about yourself,
but if you are in some of those situations where
you're trying to improve, you're trying to do better. And
I would have to agree with him that for the
most part, we all are. We definitely are. It's just
are we equipped to be able to take that next step,

(09:33):
take that path forward? What are the little things that
we can do to do that? And that's why I
love when he's coming on the show and we can
talk about adapting and adjusting your behaviors to try to
improve your performance, and again understanding that the equation is
E plus R equals zh, event plus response equals outcome

(09:57):
and the only thing that you can control is your
spons It's that are you can't control the event, you
can't control the outcome, but how you respond to certain
things is going to be so meaningful as far as
the impact that it can have on the outcome. And
then that outcome could potentially lead to different events that

(10:18):
are happening. And that's the beauty of it, and that's
why I think Shane Beemer is understanding of that because
he wants that pressure, he wants that privilege, he wants
that target on his back. And then you also have
the mindset of how can we do things a little
bit differently, and not just to make sure we don't

(10:44):
lose games, but we're actually doing things to be the best,
to reach and strive for greatness. And it's just like
in a relationship, why wouldn't you want to try to
be the best version of yourself for your spouse, your partner, whatever.

(11:06):
And therefore you can have the opportunity of focusing on
trying to have the best relationship, not just the bare minimum.
And what I mean by that, I think a lot
of times we do view things, especially in sports, hey
let's just do the things. Let's practice so we don't lose,
So that's it. No, do the small things, do the

(11:29):
little things that add up to make you great. That's
what you need to focus on and have that mentality.
And just like in a relationship, don't have it where
say if you're married that, hey.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Let's do the things so we don't get divorced.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
No, do the things that you can have the greatest
marriage that you two can possibly have.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
So go above and beyond.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
And when you have that mindset, oh, let's just do
the things not to get divorced, or let's just do
things so we don't lose. You're just doing the bare minimum.
But you can do more, you can strive for more.
And that's what I love about Shane Biemer. He's taking
on that opportunity, that that scenario that is playing out

(12:15):
that yes, bring it on. We will take the target.
We will take that opportunity of seeing if we can
compete against the elite of the elite. And I think
they're on that trajectory right now. And that's why, Yes,
there's going to be a lot to talk about in
terms of here in this talking season, and then at

(12:39):
the end of the day.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
It's put up or shut up.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
You're just going to have to go out there and
start making plays as a team, as a player and
doing those disciplined things, just like we talked about with
Brian Kayite yesterday, those small little things, those winning things
and having that discipline and especially during those days when
you don't want to do it and we all have those,

(13:03):
but can you fight through that?

Speaker 2 (13:05):
And that's going to be a big part of it.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
Well, we also have the British Open going on right now,
the second round, and right now I've got the TV
here on in the studio and Scotti Scheffler is eight under.
He's in second place right now, tied with Brian Harmon,
and he's teeing off at number fifteen. You know, Matt
Fitzpatrick leading right now at nine under and he's getting

(13:29):
ready to tee off at number eighteen. And so this
is what we're wanting. You're talking about the best of
the best and targets on their back, and that is
a Scotti Scheffler who yesterday what hit three fairways and
still was putting up an impressive score and knowing that

(13:50):
he hasn't really performed that well in previous British Opens
or the Open Championship, I should say, but he.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Has had in the past.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
His four Open Championship opportunities, they have been four top
twenty five finishes, so it's not like he hasn't had
that opportunity of somewhat contending, but he's never really been
in contention. I think the best he's finished is seventh.
But this is an opportunity. Yeah, that Scotty Scheffler, and

(14:21):
this is what we want. We want the names up there.
We want those guys competing and can Scotty Scheffler continue
his magical run. So we'll definitely keep an eye on
the Open Championship, the one hundred and fifty third version
of that. They're at Royal Port, Rush in Northern Ireland.
Obviously Rory McElroy from that area, not too far from

(14:45):
their hometown boy, and definitely the contingency wants to see
Rory have some magic and he's at three under and
he has finished for today. So sitting right now tied
for wealth is Rory McElroy and obviously some other players
who've had a fantastic day. Keegan Bradley, he's also sitting

(15:07):
there at three under. A great day for him, sixty seven.
Tony fenw is at four under. Harris English is at
five under. He's finished for the day. Chris got her up.
He's also at five under and got her up. What
a last name. You gotta love that. And let's see
who else we've got again. Matt Fitzpatrick there at nine under,

(15:31):
and Sam Burns sitting there at two under. He's tied
for sixteenth and he's still got a couple of holes
to play.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Xander Shoffley.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
We know his success and not necessarily in the British Opens,
but obviously in the US Opens and PGA Championship. He's
sitting there at two under Ricky Fowler. That would be
interesting for Ricky Fowler right now, one under he's finished
for the to day. He finished at plus one for today,
obviously a little bit not as good day today as

(16:00):
it was yesterday. And then you also have Justin Thomas
that finished at two under for the day, so now
he is at one under. So the question is will
there be weather that will affect some of these guys
like a Matt Fitzpatrick, Scotti Scheffler, Brian Harmon sitting there
at almost ten under again, Matt fit Pat Matt Fitzpatrick

(16:22):
at nine under, and Scotti Scheffler at eight under.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
So we'll see how that plays out. But I do.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Understand that in these type of conditions it can be
extremely hard.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Not only do you include the weather, but just the
rough all of that.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
It's going to be very difficult for these guys. But
what I do love also is that come Sunday morning, yeah,
because of the time change, oh, you can wake up
and you can watch a major championship and then still
have the rest of the day to be able to
do things. And that's why I love sometimes being able
to watch the Open Championship and again with them five

(16:58):
hours ahead. In terms of yes, I'm all about that,
all right. So we do want to talk though about
some other things, I know, college football. We're going to
talk about all of that and the SEC the media
polls have come out, but we will also talk some
NFL action as well, because now the over and unders

(17:19):
have been out for a while, but they're adjusting a
little bit in terms of win totals for some of
these teams. So it's going to be interesting how some
of these are able to I guess, will they live
up to the expectations and what are good bets. I'm
not a gambling type of guy, but of course I
love being able to predict, you know, some of these

(17:41):
over unders the win totals, but I'm not actually going
to go lay money on it. It's actually more for
me just about pride, and that's the reality of it.
But what I do find interesting, also from a gambling perspective,
is that how some of these over and unders they
can change so quickly.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Like I saw the buffalo bills.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
You've already changed one game over and under, and that's
significant when you're talking about eleven and a half versus
twelve and a half.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
That thing that.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Makes things significantly different from a betting perspective, So you
do have that. But I did want to take a
look at what we saw real quick, and we're going
to talk much more about this in our number two
with Hale mcgrenahan from the Big Spur dot Com. Again,
he was down there at SEC Media Days in Atlanta

(18:27):
as well for obviously football, and so we'll get some
more insight for him.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
But the SEC did just release.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
The preseason media poll and who the media and included
here because yes, I did vote that you what we
thought I should say, and.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
I guess you are who you say you are. So
I was there, I.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Got an opportunity to vote, so my vote did count,
and I'll tell you how I voted once we were
able to break all of this down, but just from
a highlight perspective, Texas is preseason number one team in
the SEC according to the media, as they finished with

(19:12):
three thousand and sixty points and just squeaking ahead of Georgia,
who finished with two thousand nine hundred and fifty seven.
But here's what's very interesting is that when you looked
at it, who is going to be the SEC champion
because the predicted order finish that's based on the total

(19:32):
number of points. You get x number of points for
being voted first place, second place, third place, etc. You
get the idea and you total those points up. But
SEC Champion, you just pick who you think is going
to be the SEC champion. And Texas got ninety six

(19:53):
first place votes that they would be the SEC champion.
Georgia in second place the next closest with forty four
first place votes. Now, when you look at it from
the predicted order of finish, the margin is not large there.
It's one hundred and three point different between Texas and Georgia. Again,

(20:17):
Texas had three thousand and sixty Georgia two thousand, nine
hundred and fifty seven. But when you look at who
the voters think is going to be number one man,
Texas ahead of everybody by a long shot. Texas actually

(20:39):
had more votes for first place than Georgia, Alabama and
LSU combined had.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
For first place votes.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
Again, Georgia only forty four first place votes compared to
Texas with ninety six, Alabama with twenty nine first place votes.
They're finishing third, LSU with twenty first place votes, and
then you have the big gap between the fifth and

(21:11):
sixth place team. So South Carolina is sitting there with
five first place votes to be SEC champion. And South
Carolina did finish sixth in the predicted order of finish
with twenty one hundred and nine, so it did follow through.
You've got Texas, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and South Carolina rounding

(21:32):
out the top six there in terms of.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
The SEC preseason media poll.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
And the thing that surprised me the most is that
it's Texas number one, not that they're number one, because
I do believe they are the best team in the SEC.
And last year, I thought the storyline was going to
play out that Texas would win the SEC and how
appropriate that it would be. And I felt that they

(22:01):
would meet up with Georgia and they would beat Georgia
because I felt that Georgia was going to beat them
in the regular season and then Texas would have their
revenge and beat them in the SEC championship game because
how appropriate would that be from a storyline perspective? That
your first year into the SEC Conference and you go
and win the SEC. That would be a total Texas

(22:24):
thing to do, because we know that people talk about
if you're from the state of Texas, everything is bigger
in Texas and they try to be as bold and
big as possible. And that is definitely bold and big
coming in and winning the SCC.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
But we obviously saw what happened.

Speaker 3 (22:42):
Georgia wasn't rolling over and they said, oh no, not yet,
not yet. You might get us another year, but not
this year. That's why I'm surprised. And again I get it.
You have a lot coming back with Texas, no question,
they've done a really good job in the transfer portal
as well. And then Georgia is there question marks truly

(23:03):
at quarterback, which they really haven't had that type of
question mark since Stetson Bennett really took over. And then
we saw what Stetson Bennett was able to do. And
then obviously Carson beg was at least able to stabilize
Georgia but not elevate them.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
And that's the difference. And so is Gunner Stockton.

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Is he going to be that guy that's going to
elevate the Georgia Bulldogs and allow them to compete for
a national championship. Now again, I know Stetson Bennett had
a hell of a defense that was behind him, so
to speak. I do get that, and George's defense is
not like it was three years ago, There's no question.

(23:47):
I also think that Gunner Stockton is not Stetson Bennett,
and he might be a point two or a two
point zero version of Stetson Bennett, but the sequel typically
is not as good as the first go around. We
know that happens from a movie perspective, love Gladiator. Gladiator
two just didn't have the same bravado as Gladiator. That's

(24:13):
just the reality of it. And so can Gunner Stockton
be that same type of quarterback as Stetson Bennett. And
I think it's just very difficult to have lightning in
the bottle like George did two times at that quarterback position,
and that Gunner Stockton will be that guy that came
out of nowhere basically in this underdog mentality. And I
love the story that's very similar to Stetson Bennett, that

(24:36):
his dream has been a quarterback, to be a quarterback
at the University of Georgia, between the hedges there in
Sandford Stadium. I get all of that, no question, but
it's different.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
And can you.

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Have those two type those two situations that happened. Just
think about Clemson back in the day when you had
Deshaun Watson and then you had a year of transition
with Kelly Bryant the quarterback until Trevor Lawrence. And could
you anticipate of having lightning in the bottles, so to speak,
with two elite level high school quarterbacks coming in and

(25:12):
living up to the expectations for the Clemson Tigers in
both of those quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence winning
a national championship and that's rare.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
And then so we.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
Saw that maybe could it actually happen three times with
dj uey Unglay And obviously it did not.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
So that's why I'm not.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Certain that we can see the same thing, because it's
rare to have two quarterbacks within a three or four
year period that can be elite.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
Level type of quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
And especially when you're looking at it's Stetson Bennett and
a Gunner Stockton, who again, these guys were not highly touted.
These guys were not five star type of guys. So
those underdog stories are already rare, and then to have
two of them happen and in that short period of time,
I just don't know if that's going to happen. And
maybe that's what the media is seeing right now why

(26:06):
Texas is so far the odds on favorite to win
the SEC Championship in ninety six first place votes. Georgia
in second place had forty four. That's a significant difference
there between the two, especially when Georgia beat Texas twice
last year in the regular season and in the SEC

(26:28):
Championship game. So there's something significant there that the media
seems to be trying to tell us right now that yeah,
we will see how it plays out, but Texas does
seem to be the odds on favorite. But for South Carolina,
you are getting five first place votes, so you're starting

(26:48):
that trend. People are starting to believe, they're starting to
understand that maybe some positive things are really happening there
at South Carolina. And yes, there could contingencies that it's
local media that cover South Carolina that is propping those
votes there for a first place finish. I get that,

(27:11):
but then you also you do have South Carolina in
sixth place overall in predicted order of finish with two
thy one hundred and nine points, and you've got LSU
at two thousand, six hundred and sixty eight points there
in fifth place. So yeah, there you do have almost
a five hundred point gap there. But in all reality,

(27:33):
if you're South Carolina, now you're ahead of other teams
like Florida, Oh, Miss, Texas A and M, Tennessee, Oklahoma.
And yes, and now you look at the Auburns, the Missouri's, Vanderbilts, Arkansas, Kentucky,
and Mississippi State. You expect to be ahead of those,
but it's nice to have that spot. Ahead of Florida,

(27:56):
ahead of Old Miss, ahead of Texas A and M,
ahead of Tennessee. In Oklahoma, I know they're coming off
a bad year last year, but there's a lot of
hype around Oklahoma right now.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
I would have to.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
Say nobody's really talking about Alabama, though, so watch out.
I know Caylen de Boor had a rough first season,
but it's tough being able to follow a legend, follow
Nick Saban, who arguably is the greatest college football coach
we've ever seen, and especially we know without a shadow
of a doubt. In the modern era, it's not even close.

(28:27):
But we're talking about all of college football, and I
think because of the dynamics that we have in the
world today, I still think it's Nick Saban. Just what
he's been able to accomplish, it's absolutely amazing. So you
have to understand that Alabama is still going to be good,
but Kim Calen de Boor be that guy to make

(28:49):
that transition, because typically we hear, oh, you don't want
to follow the guy, You'll want to be the.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
Guy after the guy that follows the guy.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
But we'll see how Calen de Boorr is able to
perform in the second year. And again, I think there's
a lot of people that wouldn't say ignoring Alabama, but
they're looking at A Texas, They're looking at Georgia, and
they're looking like at a Brian Kelly, I should say,
at LSU, and you know, is it time? Okay, Brian Kelly,

(29:21):
You've had some talent, you continue to get talent. You've
got to take that next step. And then obviously you
also have a team like South Carolina who seems to
be knocking at the door, almost knocked Alabama off on
the Road last year almost knocked LSU off at home
and probably should have won both of those games. So

(29:44):
we will see how it plays out. The other team, though,
that I am curious about, and that's Missouri. We talked
about Eli Drinkwitz yesterday and his thoughts and ideas of
having thirty teams that would make the playoffs, and it
is very interesting, it's very intriguing. But I'm wondering if
Missouri might be a little bit better than people expect,

(30:04):
that might be a tough team, might be one of

things going on in the landscape of college athletics, especially

order and how will that change things. And yes, also
Hale mcgrenahan from the Big Spur dot Com will join
