The latest headlines and in depth conversations. It's the Richmond
Weavers Show on one oh four nine Fox Sports up
State presented by Ingles Low Prices, Love the Savings Now
for richest take on sports. Here's Richmond Weaver.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Ready to roll this Tuesday right here on the Richmond
Weavers Show presented by Ingles.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Markets Our two.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
As we are back in studio, mister Trey Falco behind
the board and behind the mic as always, is joining us.
And it is a hot day out there in the
eight oh yeah, very very hot, but it's great to
be back in studio. As we were broadcasting live from
Columbia yesterday Birdies with Beamer head coach Shane Beemer, inviting
(00:49):
certain media members that cover South Carolina football on the
local level, and so it was a great opportunity to
be able to spend some time with some of the
coaching staff and some of the former players, and just
Michael Debates and Steve Fink do a fantastic job there
as communications people for South Carolina football, and Michael Debates
(01:10):
does a lot of stuff with the basketball also, but
Steve Fink is the man down there in Columbia, So
think to them for allowing us to come down there
and broadcast. It was crazy, It was fun, it was exciting.
Didn't win, but we did play some decent golf.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
It was hot.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
But I'm telling you, South Carolina has a lot to
look forward to in terms of gamecock football. I know
there's a lot of talk going on right now. As
players will report on July thirty first, practice will start
August first, So here we go. Mister Falco calls it
is time in terms of everything college football. Oh yeah,
(01:48):
and we know talking season. When does I guess that's
my question. When does talking season end?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I mean, I would imagine.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
It's funny because I guess it depends on how you
define talking season, because I feel like we talked about
it all throughout the season.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
You know, I don't know that it never technically ends.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
But if you want to talk about shifting out of
that quote unquote talking season, oh, the hope and the
aspirations and the expectations of this coming season. Probably depending
on what you consider the start of football week zero
maybe first for those, or for you week one or
again week one of the NFL season, that might be
(02:31):
the end of that prototypical talking season that is, Oh,
the season of hope.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Now we've got games going on.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Now we've got metrics, and we've got stats that start
coming in, we can start making some observations. So maybe
it shifts out of your traditional talking season. But I
feel I would argue that talking season never stops.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I don't know as much as we frame this as
talking season, especially as we're leading up to Media Days,
all of that that's going into it, and then fall
camp players reporting to practice. I think there's something to
be said that talking season is three hundred and sixty
five days now, and we're to know that from an
(03:08):
NFL perspective, it's manufactured.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
It is no doubt, and.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
There's something about, hey, I'm okay with manufacturing some content,
manufacturing talking points, manufacturing some narratives and some debates and
trying to understand your team and again moving into that
season of hope and the off season and what it's
going to look like. So there is definitely something to
that that talking season really never ends. Now, it just
(03:33):
might get amped up during certain parts of the calendar.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Right year, it's more amplified right now.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Of course, yes, we're coming off of Media Days, and
maybe Media days have also taken a little bit of
a back seat. And now I wouldn't say back seat.
Let me refresh that or reframe that, not a back
seat necessarily, but have media days become a little bit
deluded in terms of their importance because we're talking about
(04:03):
this content so much where you remember fifteen years ago
when it was media Day, when you were glued to
the information that came out of there because there hadn't
been a whole lot written or talked about, so there
was something about okay, media days. This is now it's
feeling like college football. And that's why for me now
(04:27):
looking at the calendar, and I know we can talk
about how fast the calendar goes and how that plays out,
especially as you get older and when you're a parent
and having kids, and there's demarcations each and every year
as far as like a new calendar year or new
school year starting I should say, or a calendar year,
new month. All of those things seemed to be sped up,
(04:49):
and we talk about it quite a bit. But there's
something to be said that back in the day where
you had this point where okay, now it starts to
feel like college football. Now it starts to feel like
football season because there was much more of of the
(05:10):
end of the season. Then you had a little bit
of the offseason, and then it was okay, we're oh
so close. And I remember getting you know, Street and
Smith's magazine or now, I mean you can talk about
Phil Steel and oh you get the magazine and you
know that gives you your first glimpse. Okay, here we go,
let's start reading some information. But there's so much content now,
(05:32):
which don't get me wrong, I love it. Yeah, it's great,
but it does take away a little bit from the
talking season that there's it's constant.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Oh yeah, it's consistent.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
We're breaking down teams like we never have before, and
in terms of you know, how they're going to be evaluated,
and now even to the point of doing preseason rankings
for coaches, right.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
You got to find some content.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
But I did come across this. This is on CBS
Sports and this is for the ACC, so they're coming
out with their sec also, but this is for the
ACC the coaches rankings for twenty twenty five. This is
by Chip Patterson, and I think Chip Patterson does a
great job. I do enjoy his work, especially even on
(06:22):
the college basketball side, with him and Gary Parrish and
Matt Norlander on the eye of college basketball. But here's
heading into the twenty twenty five season, the ACC Coaches
Coaches Rankings. Yes, and so obviously you know one of
the things that is going to stand out immediately because
(06:44):
of one mister Bill Belichick. Oh right, yeah, entering new
blood the ACC. Yes, And how do you evaluate Bill
Belichick as a coach?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Right in the ACC?
Speaker 2 (07:02):
How much do you take of his history of success?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
But it's in the NFL, it's not in college. Yeah.
I I mean, you're gonna do it because you have to.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
That's the content, right, But at the same time, I
look at it and I'm like, it feels like such
an undefined because I don't know. Obviously there are things
that are gonna translate. But at the same time, when
you're talking about Bill Belichick and how polarizing he is
there towards the end of his NFL career, what parts
of it do you take that are going to transfer
to North Carolina. It's gonna be the good parts when
(07:36):
he had Tom Brady, when he was on a winning
streak and he was doing everything, or is it gonna
be the bad parts there towards the end where the
Patriots were two in whatever each season, Like.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
You remember, he was fired also in the NFL. Yeah,
so there is that. I don't I literally don't know
how you evaluate him.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
I guess if it's whether you have an optimistic worldview
or you have a pessimistic worldview.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
If you're optimistic, maybe you look at it and go, yeah, man,
he's gonna do great.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Look what he did with the Patriots with Brady that's right, Yeah,
half glass full?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I think there's a lot of people that are viewing
it that way with Bill Belichick because of the history
that he's had and we do know that you're talking
about from a X and O perspective, and especially on
the defensive side. Oh yeah, he's a genius. There's no
denying that. He's brilliant. And if you have weaknesses on
(08:24):
the offensive side, he can find those holes.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Oh yeah, he can.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Now the question is does he have the talent at
North Carolina to be able to match the two together,
find the hole and then be able to execute out
on the field. Right Every coach is trying to understand
that as well. So there's something to be said, but
that I was curious where Chip Patterson of CBS Sports
where he was going to put Bill Belichick. And so
(08:50):
we'll actually just go down the list starting at number one.
And this is because this is where it was intriguing
for me because typically I do like to do from
the bottom bottom to the top, but here I was
wanting to see where they would put Bill Belichick. So
number one, they have Dabo Sweeney and nationally he's ranked
(09:10):
number three behind Kirby Smart and Ryan Day, which I
still that's that's a tough one.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
I think you're splitting hairs there.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
But Dabo Sweeney number one in the ACC, and I
mean that's right.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I don't know, there's no questions. I don't know how
you argue that and say he's not no.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Exactly anybody in any other conference, what other fan base
you're from, Right, you have to agree that Dabo Sweeney
is the number one coach in the ACC. Yeah, I'm
not saying Ashley, I'm just saying in the ACC and
last year he was number one.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Also number two.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Chip Patterson has Jeff Brahm Louisville sitting there. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Now, and he did.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
A great job at Purdue, and we saw what Louisville
was able to do last year coming into Death Valley
and dominating the Clemson Tigers there. So in the game
in Louisville this year on a Friday night, kind of
late in the year, that's going to be a game
that's gonna be circled by a lot of Clemson fans
and could have some implications in the ACC. And it's
(10:18):
a freaky Friday game. As a Clemson fan, I don't
even like that at all. I'll go ahead and promise
you that. But Jeff Brawm there at number two, number
three in the ACC according to CBS Sports Chip Patterson,
is Mario Cristobaul of Miami. Now again, this is one
of those guys that we seem to think he's the guy, right, Yeah,
(10:42):
I've heard a couple of these guys. Yes, I mean, okay,
they they've had some success and they were right there
right last year they had it cam Ward all of that,
they had their quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
And they just couldn't go up to Syracuse and win.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Thought they needed to do yeah pick, yes, number one
pick and they would have been in the a SEC
Championship game. But because of that Fran Brown there, Syracuse
does Dabosweeney a favor and knocks Miami off and Davosweeney
and the Clemson Tigers somehow kicked that fifty six year
old field goal against SMU to win the a SEC
(11:22):
Championship and get into the College Football playoff.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
So Mario Cristibal now with a Carson Beck, Okay, we'll see.
I don't know. There a lot of.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Questions, a lot of questions around there, but at some point, okay, Miami,
you got it.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
You gotta get going.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
But Mario Cristal ball number three, number four, Rhett Lashly
of SMU and now talking about a guy who's upper
trajectory is exploding right now and coming into the ACC
last year as their first year and making it to
the conference championship, and during that game against Clemson for
a period of time you thought was over. And great
(12:01):
job by Rhet Lashley circling the wagon, so to speak,
and keeping his team engaged and involved, and they make
that comeback and almost are able to at least get
that game into overtime.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
And I do believe, And again I think we've seen enough.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Games Tray where you know I'm all about it's never
over until it's over. Yeah, there's always hope, there's always
that but there's times you can just sense how things
are going. It's in the air.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
It is, it was in the air.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
And if that game does go into overtime, I do
think SMU wins that game. They had momentum because I
do know momentum is real. Oh yeah, there is no doubt.
But rhet Lashley. They're at number four ACC rankings according
to Chip Patterson of CBS Sports, Number five Mike Norvell
(12:55):
Florida State. Now obviously he has drop some. Last year
was rough, Oh my goodness rough.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
You remember they were thirteen and oh.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Heading into the end of the season, and yeah, obviously
get blocked from the College Football Playoff because this was
not the expansion year.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
They didn't voted in.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
They didn't get voted in because they had a quarterback injury,
that's right, Yeah, and that devastated Florida State fans, made
them mad, ready to tackle the world.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
And then they go to and ten. Last year.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
I didn't realize it. I knew it was bad and
they just kind of fell off the radar. I didn't
realize it.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Was that bad too.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
And ten, jeez, yeah, to and ten And now looking
at Mike Norvelle in ACC competition, he's five hundred and twenty.
Oh wow, okay, so yeah, how is this season going
to play out for Florida State?
Speaker 3 (13:57):
All right, so there's the top five.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
No Bill Belichick, right, So as I kept scrolling, then
I see Brent Key with Georgia Tech at number six. Okay,
I'm telling you watch out for Georgia Tech this year.
We're going to break down the ACC in more detail,
but watch out for Georgia Tech. Brent Key at number six,
number seven, Dave Dorin at NC State, number eight, pat
(14:24):
Nardoozi oh Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, number nine, Manny Diaz at Duke Okay,
number ten, Fran Brown at Syracuse. Still know Bill Belichick?
Where is the great one? So Chip Patterson his top
(14:45):
ten does not include Bill Belichick. Number eleven, Bill O'Brien,
another former NFL head coach, Bill O'Brien at Boston College.
And here we go number twelve, Bill Belichick sitting there
with the North Carolina tar Hills. So part of me
(15:05):
is looking at this because again you can say, one hand,
he's considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
Oh of course, six Super Bowl titles. Come on, Trey,
you know I mean, but there's also something about how
will his game translate.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
To the college level.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Oh yeah, and not so much his game in terms
of x's and o's, Yes, that's part of it.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
I'm talking about his game in terms of being able to.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Relate yep, and to be able to motivate and to
be able to communicate in a way that gets everybody
quote unquote rowing in the same.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Direction there in Chapel Hill.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Because Chapel Bill's got some challenges in terms of being
able to do that.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
And if there's a guy that you would think.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Could do it, it's probably Bill Belichick probably, yeah, but
it's unknown. So when I look at the rest of
the coaches here, You've got Justin will Cox at Cal
at number thirteen, Jake Dickert at Wake Forest number fourteen,
brand new coach, Brent Prye at Virginia Tech. He's on
the hot seat, there's no doubt. Then you've got Tony
(16:16):
Elliott at Virginia at number sixteen.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
And again, I know this is.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Going to be a pressure year for Tony Ellott, but
remember man, when he took over, they had the shooting
there in Charlottesville.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Several players were killed.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
So it's been somewhat of some turmoil just trying to
get things kickstarted there in Charlottesville. And then seventeen Stanford
Frank Reich, and we know, I mean, he's an NFL
guy also, but Bill Belichick sitting there at twelve ahead
of these guys. On one hand, I was happy to
(16:53):
see Chip Patterson didn't have Bill Belichick in the top
five because it's one thing to go on your history.
I get that, but you can't weigh it that much
that we haven't seen what's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
We don't know right well.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
And and I think you make a really really great
point there earlier talking about from a fundamental standpoint and
x's and O. Sure, Bill Belichick is phenomenal, But I
think what a lot of people fail to realize there's
this Mysnimber that like, oh, okay, well, if you can
coach in the NFL, you can coach in the in
(17:32):
the college. But the players are totally different. It's totally different,
like a totally different environment. And I'm not talking about
from like from an on the field perspective. There's not
a whole lot that changes. It's football. It's fundamental footballs.
It all makes sense to a certain degree. I know
the rules are a little bit different, things play a
little bit different from the NFL, but from a player
standpoint and how how you one you can treat those
(17:53):
players because inevitably, whether we want to say amateurism is
dead or not, or professionalism, there's still technically classified as
college students right now, they're college athletes, so is it
is fundamentally different than how you might be able to
treat an NFL player. There's no player organization, none of that, Like,
it's totally different. And then a lot of these guys,
I mean you're talking about they're coming in some of
(18:14):
your freshmen eighteen, nineteen years old, whereas your youngest you
talk about your NFL players, maybe they're if they really
do well and show out, they're twenty one, twenty two,
maybe twenty three, so they're inherently older. There's a different
mind shift set there. There's also mindset shift there. And
then the fact that they're still like it's totally different
from a player perspective to a coach, and how you
(18:36):
connect with them, how you relate to them, how you
get them motivated, how you talk to them. Then you
throw in the transfer portal, which is like glorified free
agency basically, but you're not signing contracts so they can
leave whenever they want to. There's so much turnover each
year because you in the NFL, you could sign a
guy to a contract, keep reup in that contract and
having for ten fifteen years if like a good quarterback,
(18:56):
that's like a Tom Brady yes, Whereas here you're you're
talking about quarterback turnover every two, three, four years if
you're lucky, if you get some guy that's in there
long enough. Like, it's so different. So yeah, from a
fundamental aspect of the way the football when they hit
the field, sure, it's probably not gonna be too different. Like,
I don't think he'll have a problem adjusting there from
dialing up schemes and whatnot, but from connecting with the
(19:19):
players and getting them motivated.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
That's where I'm curious to see. How does Belichick do it?
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah, And we talked with Brian Kite, who's the author
of Daily Discipline newsletter and you can find out more
of his information at Daily Discipline dot com. And we
talk to him each week about performance and behaviors associated
with performance and the things that you have to do.
And he specifically talked about some of the best coaches. Yeah,
(19:47):
understand their value as a CEO and are also looking
at ways to improve their leadership skills, not just their
ex and no's and sometimes you just have it. And
we've definitely seen some of that. And I would say
with Bill Belichick, at least we do know as the
skill sets to be a CEO. He has those also
(20:10):
because he's been doing it in the NFL, So that
should help him, you know, coming into college in terms of,
you know, being able to manage. And also we know
that college athletics is changing and we're seeing I mean
he did hire a general manager. He did, Michael Lombardi,
that's right. I mean a guy he knows really well
(20:30):
who has been a general manager in the NFL. Right,
So he's supporting himself with the personnel that he needs
to and surrounding himself with those type of individuals. But again,
that doesn't guarantee success exactly.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
The six Super.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Bowl rings are nice, but that doesn't mean he's going
to come in and win an ACC championship his first year,
right and make it to the College Football Playoff, or.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
He could he could Yeah, we don't know.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
I just don't know if he has the roster right
now to be able to do that. Can he have
a splash? Can he win some games? Probably so?
Speaker 3 (21:12):
And I do have that game.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
October fourth, Clemson traveling to Chapel Hill. That will be
an interesting game because of the two guys involved. And
as much as we can say that they're different, they
are similar to a certain degree, but their styles we
do know are different.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
Oh yeah, and I'm anxious to see that.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
But Bill Belichick ranked twelfth in the ACC coaches ranking
according to Chip Patterson of CBS Sports. Give us a call, though,
let us know, do you think Bill Belichick? Is he
going to have success in North Carolina this year? Coming
out of the gates and on Labor Day night against TCU.
(21:58):
ESPN has already announced they're going to be there. Game
Day is going to be there, Pat McAfee's show everything
is going to be broadcasting there from Chapel Hill, getting
ready for that big game. And ESPN is hooking their
wagon to Bill Belichick thinking that could he be this
(22:18):
year's version of Dion Sanders and how Dion Sanders burst
onto the scene. Now, Dion Sanders gave us all of
the bravado UNMOS Flash show and.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
The talking points.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
You know, and Bill Belichick might not have the same
type of flash that Dion does, but if he wins,
it'll be a different story.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
All Right, we'll.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Continue this Wednesday edition, this Tuesday edition of the Richmond
Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets. But give us a
call eight six four two four zero five four eight zero. Again,
that numbers eight six four two four zero five four
eight zero. Let us know, well, Bill Belichick will be
he will he successful this season?
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Much more right after.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
This eight six four two four zero five to four
eight zero. Again, that number is eight six four two
four zero five four eight zero right here on the
Tuesday edition of The Richmond Weavers Show, presented by Ingles Markets.
Join the conversation, yes, anytime you want to. And again
we're talking Bill Belichick and will he have success there
(23:25):
at North Carolina. According to Chip Patterson of CBS Sports,
he has Bill Belichick ranked as the twelfth best coach
in the ACC Dabo Sweeney number one, but again Bill
Belichick number twelve. And how much are you going off
of Bill Belichick's history and the success that he's had,
(23:46):
those six Super Bowl rings and obviously all of the success.
It's not just about the six Super Bowl rings. And
he did go to other Super Bowls also, Yeah, and
they won the division quite a bit.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
They were in the playoff hunt quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
So how will that correlate and how will that translate
there in college there in Chapel Hill. A lot of
eyes are going to be on Chapel Bill. I can
promise you just to see what it's going to look like.
But again you can join the conversation eight six four
two four zero five four eight zero and again. Programming note,
starting on Monday, August the fourth, we do have the
(24:25):
exciting news that we will have four hours of local
sports talk programming here on one O four nine Fox
Sports Upstate, So you get three to seven, the Richmond
Weavers Show starting at three, and then Game On with
John Nellis starting at five o'clock. And obviously excited that
we're able to provide four hours of local sports talk
(24:48):
here on one O four nine Fox Sports Upstate, all
presented by Ingles Markets. So again looking forward to that
starting on August the fourth.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
What a lineup you look at?
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Starting at six am, two pros and a Cup of
Joe nine to twelve you've got Dan Patrick Show, and
then from twelve to three you've got Colin Cowherd The Herd,
and then from three to seven local sports talking dive
in to South Carolina Clemson, and obviously we know John
with Game on will really dive into the Carolina Panthers.
(25:20):
As I know he's been at training camp, maybe getting
a little too much sun, but that's okay. It's been hot, Yeah,
it's been hot, yes as we saw Dabo Sweeney there
at the Panthers camp yesterday and Hunter Renfro making quote
unquote come back. And I just look back at Hunter
Renfro and the success that he's had. And when you
(25:45):
just see Hunter Renfro, though you see him in a
grocery store, you think.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
He's the bag boy, you do, you do?
Speaker 2 (25:54):
I remember Eric McClain talking about the first time that
he met Hunter Renfro, and then we have Eric on.
I'll have to ask him about this and and have
him share the story because he does a much better job,
especially how he projects the story, and you know, and
talking about how he's in a lineup and everybody is
(26:16):
you know, it's hot, it's practice, and you know, all
the offensive linemen there or whatever, and he sees this
guy and he goes up to him and says, I'll
take a water bottle.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
He thinks, Hunter.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Renfro, yes exactly, because again remember now this is Hunter
Renfro when he first got it, comes in, so he's
much smaller than what we see the Hunter Renfro today. Yeah, beard,
and you know he's added a little bit of muscle,
but still, Hunter Renfro does stuff that you just can't teach.
(26:47):
Just again, I think he's going to have some success
in Carolina.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
I think you will.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
You've seen some of the highlights, just some of the
catches he's been making. Two things perfect for Bryce Young,
no doubt having that guy and just the reception type guy, yeah,
move the chains type of guy. Who am I looking
for in third down? That's right, Boom Renfro is third
and four, Well there he is. He just ran a
five yard 'ro oute perfect right there. And that's Hunter
(27:14):
Renfro to a t. And that's why I think he
can be the epitome of success in that type of
system and somebody that Bryce Young can really lean on
in those type of situations.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Right well, And I mean you want to.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Talk about exemplary quarterback play, elevators, whatever you want to
talk about. Yeah, but the one thing that a lot
of your really good quarterbacks have man that one receiver,
whether it's a tight end, whether it's a wide receiver,
that safety blanket, Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelcey.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Exactly who's their crutch, right, who's their guy that they
can depend on? Yes, and for whatever reason, isn't amazing
that they just seem to get open? Dude, I don't
understand it. It's like, you know he's going to be
looking for that, ye, dude. Travis Kelsey is the fastest
slow guy I've ever met in my life. The dude
is always open because he just knows where to go
and coverage that he.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Knows how to get open.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Yes, he's sneaky fast, yeah, and he's quick, but he
runs the routes so pricise that it's hard for the
defender because obviously Hunter Renfro has the advantage because he
knows where he's going to go, oh, of course, and
when he can plant the way he does and spin
and move and cut, it's such a huge advantage for
(28:25):
a team to have a player like that who can
get open in any moment.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
Right, well, and especially you know you're as the quarterback.
I mean, you obviously know the route too, and so
if you've got a guy that's that good that runs that,
it's it's almost kind of like Scotti shuffler. It's robotic,
it's so consistent and you just know, all right, he's
going to take six steps, he's gonna cut this way,
and then boom, he's gonna cut left, and I know
(28:50):
he's going to be open because that defender is not
going to be able to catch up him.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
You can almost lead it. Yeah, you can. You can
set a clock to it.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
I think that's and that's an interesting topic. And I
know we have a caller on the line, so hold on,
we're to get to you right now. One more comment
though about that, because I do want to talk about
this and even more detail at some point, because I
am fascinated.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
And again I know my wife is like, oh gosh,
here we go. Whatever you're fascinated about it.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
It's some crazy thing and it's going to be stats,
or maybe it might not be stats, but I just
it blows me away, just the leading aspect of how
quarterbacks and wide receivers and the offensive unit can be
on the same page, so dialed in and obviously a
(29:36):
lot of it has how much practice they put into it,
but just in terms of Okay, yep, I've got a
three step drop and then I'm throwing it to this
spot right there, and.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
There's nobody there at the time, and I got to throw.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
It there, and by the time the ball gets to
that spot fifteen yards to the right, ten yards down
the field, there's going to be a guy there to
catch it.
Speaker 3 (29:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
I absolutely love that type of stuff. That just blows
me away. Chemistry is such chemistry and just again what
the human mind with the human body can do, and
especially when collectively as a team. I absolutely love it.
That's another reason why I love sports. All right, let's
head out to the Ingles hotline right now, the Richmond
Weavers show.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
Who's this, Hey, guys, how are you guys doing this week?
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Doing fantastic Billy? How about you? Sir?
Speaker 6 (30:25):
Very good?
Speaker 5 (30:26):
You know what you're talking about. Richmond has a lot
to do with That's why OTAs and training camps and
all these things matter because that's continuity. These guys know
where they're going to be and it's just timing and
they just work on timing and after a while they
perfect it. And you would think after watching film that
the guys would see it coming in. I'm sure that
they do, but they still can't stop it. That's rue.
(30:47):
And you know, you guys are talking about Renfro. Guys
like that have existed in the NFL from day one.
If you go back and watch film from the sixties
all the way through today, you know they've always had
those guys. And there's always going to be a spot
or two for a guy like that because you know
who that's gonna benefit. I heard Fred talking about Bryce,
of course, but it's also going to benefit like Zavier
(31:07):
er Get, you know, probably their number one guy, because
it's gonna take treasure off of him. And you know,
I was listening to John and Trey yesterday and I
was hearing John talking about maybe he can teach him
to bring the ball in with his hands the way
he does. I doubt that because I'm sure wide receiver
coaches at South Carolina have tried that, and I'm sure
that the wide receiver coaches that at Carolina now are
trying that. So they haven't been able to I'm not
(31:29):
sure why Renfro will be able to, but it will
take double teams off of the get in this situation,
so it's just gonna help the entire roster. So I'll
say that. And then you were talking about the coaching
a few minutes ago. You know that that poll. If
I'm an acc fan of any of those coaches, I
would have wanted Belichick to be in the top five.
(31:50):
Now I'm not sure at this stage in his career
that's going to motivate him. I don't think he's like
Tom Brady where he uses these things, but you never know,
you know, so, and I remember I've seen an interview
recently and with Belichick and it may have been its
acc you know, get together that they had the meetings
or whatever when he was up there a couple of
(32:11):
weeks ago, But anyway, I know he was talking about
Tom Brady and he was saying, you know, we didn't
have a good offensive line, we didn't have great receivers.
I mean, we'd have one here sporadically. But I just
told him, get the ball out of hands, get the
ball out of your hands. And I think, you know,
he's not an offensive genius, but he knows plays, and
I think he's going to teach the quarterbacks and the
wide receivers to be in spaces. And what I think
(32:33):
he's going to do drastically for North Carolina has just
improved their defense over the last fifteen or twenty years.
That's been the one thing that has really they have
really lacked on that side of the ball. And they
brought in all these players to the portal, which is
going to help. But I think schematically wise, he's going
to make them different. Now, is that going to put
them into the ACC Championship? I don't think so. I
(32:53):
don't think nobody believes that, but I do believe they'll
have a good shot to get in eight wins this year,
and I think they're going to beat somebody they're not to.
I'm not saying it's going to be Quincy. I'm saying
it could be anybody. But there's probably three or four
teams on their schedule that people say, Okay, I don't
really think they've got a shot here, and I think
they're going to get at least one of those.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Yeah, Billy, I'm leaning towards what you're saying right there
in terms of when you look at the team overall,
the totality with the roster. It's probably not a roster
that's going to allow them to get to the ACC Championship,
but crazy things can happen. But in terms of being
able to get a victory or two where maybe they shouldn't,
(33:33):
there's no doubt Bill Belichick is that type of coach
and it would not surprise me. And when you even
look at their schedule, I mean it's TCU, Charlotte, Richmond,
Central Florida. You've got Clemson, cal Virginia, Syracuse, Stanford, Wake Forest, Duke,
and NC State. So it's not a schedule that is
(33:54):
overwhelming outside of obviously Clemson will be favored in that
game and will have a better roster, and you can
maybe even say like a Duke or a Syracuse, maybe
a TCU, But outside of that, I mean, it's gonna
be hard pressed for Bill Belichick not to get seven
or eight wins based on this schedule from what I'm
(34:15):
looking at.
Speaker 5 (34:17):
Yeah, that's why I think they're going to get eight,
you know, I just do because of the schedule and
because of him being there. I think he's going to
correct a lot of the scheme, you know, mistakes that
they've made on defense over the years and you know,
him being there has You can't tell me that he
hadn't recruited his name alone better players than they probably
had prior to So we'll see, but you know, it'll
(34:39):
be interesting. But you know, if you look at ACC,
there's only probably three or four teams is capable of
winning it. I mean, obviously Clemson in Miami. I would
say SMU is probably still in there, and maybe maybe
Georgia tex Yes, and probably Louisville that would probably be it. Yes,
you know, and and if I picked my my two
(35:00):
favorites probably to the wind ACC, I think I would
lean heavily towards Louisville and Quinson.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Yes, I think you're onto something there. And that's why
when you look at North Carolina schedule, they don't play Louisville,
they don't play Georgia Tech, they don't play Miami. So
three of those teams that could potentially be one of
the best teams in the ACC, they don't even have
them on their schedule. And also to your point, Billy,
(35:26):
I can promise you this from a defensive standpoint, they're
not going to give up seventy points like they did
last year to James Madison, Right, yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:34):
We won't see that again. If he would have been
the coach at halftime, that would have stoped.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
No doubt about it. Yes, that's for certain, Billy, we do.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
If you start looking at Patti Grieves, listen, I'm one
of those people. Bit I'm you know, I think that
you could put a player here or a coach there
and it would do different things, butud be similar. But
you can't tell me he's not one of the best
defensive masterminds that ever coach in football. I don't care
what level. Anyway, I'll hang up and listen. I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Yeah, thank you, Billy, we appreciate it. We do have
to hit this break and spot on right there. No doubt.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
You can't argue that Bill Belichick is not a defensive guru.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
You just can't, all right.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
I don't care if you dislike the way he is,
his personality, all of that. His resume just speaks for itself. Yep,
there's no doubt about it. Now Again, the question is
how's that going to translate? Year number one there in
Chapel Hill, and maybe this is the only year that
we see that Bill Belichick there in Chapel Hill, and
(36:33):
does how much does he have to prove and how
much is he amped up and motivated for this season.
We'll see that first game against TCU, all right, and
we'll also continue this Tuesday edition of The Richmond Weaver
Show presented by Ingles Markets.
Speaker 3 (36:47):
Right after this.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Oh yes, it is hot in the Upstate, and I
imagine the rest of the eastern part of the country
is still hot also. And I know our good friend
Jason Timpf of Hoops to Night, our NBA analysts and insider, Uh,
he's hot.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
He's in Arizona.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Exactly, although they're moving to Denver, Colorado, so I know
he's excited about that much better. But yes, out there
in Phoenix, that's a little hot. Uh. And again, but hey,
done in Columbia yesterday, Birdies, you're talking about hot. The
index was like one thirteen. I was gonna say. Even
Jason has made mentioned that. I think he said he
(37:29):
used to live in Charlotte. Yeah, and he's like totally
different type of heat. He goes, it's it's brutal. Again,
your analogy is the best that I've heard in terms
of what it feels like with the humidity.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Yeah, and what is it It's like putting on a
sweater exact literally did you just say it? Because it
is it is like it is a little sweater. It's terrible,
like a big wool hot sweater. Yeah, just it's it's
just no good, sticky. Yeah, we don't like that.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
But we continue here on this Tuesday edition of The
Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets, and you can
join the conversation eight six four two four zero five
four eight zero and let's head out to the Ingles
hot line right now, the Richmond Weavers Show.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Who's this?
Speaker 6 (38:14):
It's Brody guys. What's happening?
Speaker 3 (38:15):
Brody? My man? How are you sir?
Speaker 6 (38:19):
I'm doing good man, Hey, I got a better analogy
for It's like the armpit of the South.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
Now that makes me have this stinky feeling there it.
Speaker 6 (38:32):
Does, but you know, you know exactly what I mean.
As soon as you walk outside, it's just like bam,
it just hits you.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Oh yes, it's a punch right in the nose.
Speaker 6 (38:41):
Well, no doubt, Yeah, I got I got two things.
That is just pure disrespect twelve twelve twelve.
Speaker 7 (38:51):
That for Bill Belichick, You said that had him ranked
twelve twelve, Yes, had Fran Brown ahead of him, Yeah,
Manny Diaz ahead of him, Pat Nardoozy, Dave Dorin, ahead
of Bill Belichick.
Speaker 6 (39:05):
I guess the only thing they're saying is we got
to see him do it first.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (39:10):
I mean, I just I just don't understand any other
Yeah to me, that just makes zuo sense.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Yes, well, and yeah, go ahead, Brody.
Speaker 6 (39:21):
I was listening to Billy too, and I think Billy
nailed on the head too. I mean, there's there's a
pub with the schedule, there's a there's an easy path
to eight nine wins. Yes, I mean they're gonna be.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
They're gonna be favored in probably every game Buck Clemson,
it's gonna.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
Be hard pressed for them not to be.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
And again relative to how some of these other teams
do during the course of the season. But yes, just
as we're looking at it preseason. The TCU game, Okay,
that's probably maybe a lean to North Carolina, Charlotte of course, Richmond, Yes,
Central Florida. Yes, Clemson, they will not be favored. Cal
I would imagine they're favored. Virginia they should be favored. Uh,
(40:03):
Syracuse maybe.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
Sarahcuse seven starters.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Yes, it's at Syracuse, so maybe that makes a difference,
maybe a little bit of difference. Stanford at home, they'll
be favored Wake Forest. I think they'll be favored Duke
that could be questionable. Again, this is at almost at
the end of the year, so depending on how Duke is.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
And then you in the season.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
They're in Raleigh against n C State and I think
that's just dependent on how both teams are at the time.
But going into it, I would say that North Carolina
might have, you know, a two point two and a
half point favorite or be a two point two and
a half point favorite there against n C State as
of right now, and I we could I guess I
could should go look it all up because it's out there.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
I just haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 6 (40:48):
Yeah, well that's totally true too, And I want to
jump in on the on the nerd Alert yes conversation too.
The the uh. It always blows my mind to hear
people talk about like the choice routes and stuff like that.
We were doing that on my high school team. We
would call plays and we stayed in the spread, so
(41:09):
we were always trips one side, single receiver one side,
or you know, deuces on both sides, and we would
have choice routes in there, and the choice routes had
three different designations in high school. Wow, And when I
got to college it changed even more. Yeah, and I
mean those routes. The quarterback has to see the same
(41:30):
thing and the receiver seeds and you both have to
know what coverage you're in for him to even know
where to put the ball.
Speaker 3 (41:38):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (41:40):
I mean, there's it's even more to it than just
throw it to this spot on a three step drop. Y'all.
Both have to see the same thing and both do.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
The same thing.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
I love the coordination and just how everybody can be
on the same page. It's it's mind boggling. And that's
why we have to take that into consideration when we're
Monday morning quarterback and we're you know, just blasting our
team because we don't know, we think we know what's
going on and Brody, we don't really know what's going
on out on the field.
Speaker 6 (42:11):
Yeah, it's wild man. And it was always my favorite too,
because I knew if I if I had if if
I saw the same thing he saw, which normally happened,
you're gonna be wide. Oh yes, both on the same page.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
You can't stop it can't stop it.
Speaker 6 (42:27):
And that's why it's such a huge thing.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
No question about it, Brody, we do have to hit
this brake. But I appreciate you calling, but I want
you to call back because we've got some Luca to
talk about. Have you seen the transformation my friend?
Speaker 6 (42:40):
Don't get me started on he did that three years
in a row. Now if he will be fat by
the beginning the season.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
Guarantee love it.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Thank you for the call, Brody, as it will continue
this Tuesday edition of The Richmond Weavers Show presented by
Ingles Markets. Right after this The Richmond Weaver Show presented
by Ingles Market, it continues right here on one oh
four nine Fox Sports Upstate, and make sure you get
out to your local Ingles as you might need to
replenish from this past weekend doing a bunch of grilling,
(43:10):
hanging out at the pool, having friends over, whatever it
might have been. You need to restock on your groceries,
or maybe you're planning for this upcoming weekend. Now I
did see that. Looks like it might be weather wise,
a little bit rainy this weekend and cooler temperatures. Cooler temperatures, yeah,
that could be coming this way, so plan accordingly. But
(43:32):
the first thing you need to do is make sure
you have all of your groceries and get out to
your local ingles ingles low prices, love the savings. As
we are looking at motoring through this hour, but also
the month of July.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Oh yeah, here we go. It is happening again. We
know July thirty.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
First, we've got South Carolina football players are reporting practice
starts August the first, same with Clemson, so it is
time for some college football. But we're looking at July
the twenty ninth. So let's walk back in a little
bit of history.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
What happened on this day. Let's go back in history
to the moments you might have forgotten and the ones
you'll never forget. It's OTD on this day, all right.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
I did say July a little bit country right there.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
That's why Georgia Twain, it's gone out July July July.
It's July twenty ninth, all right. How about this. In
nineteen sixty, the first American Football League preseason game is
played in Buffalo, New York. The Boston Patriots would beat
(44:40):
the Bills twenty eight to seven before sixteen thousand fans
there at War Memorial Stadium. So there we go. We
can go all the way back sixty five years ago
is when we had this crazy idea having a preseason
game sixteen thousands a lot for exactly would you say,
nineteen sixty.
Speaker 3 (45:00):
Sixty, Well, you didn't have much else going on. Well,
so there is that.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
But again this is we've got the Hall of Fame
game coming up on July thirty first, this Thursday. So
NFL is going to be kicking off right, yeah, with
the Chargers and the Lions there in Canton, Ohio.
Speaker 3 (45:20):
And you think that.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
Man, we're playing these games early in July, Well, this is.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
July twenty nine in nineteen sixty.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
So this thing has been in existence for a long
time in terms of how early it was, So there's
something to be said about that. In nineteen ninety six,
Michael Johnson would sweep to victory in an Olympic four
hundred meters record forty three point four to nine seconds.
And then while Carl Lewis would leap into history and
(45:49):
Atlanta as his long jump of twenty seven feet ten
and three fourths inches earned him his ninth gold medal.
Carl Lewis, Yes, absolutely insane, that is, and that is
this Tuesday edition Other Richmond Weavers Show, presented by Ingles Markets,
and we'll be broadcasting live from the Windham Championship.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
In Greensboro, North Carolina, tomorrow. We'll talk to you then
