Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hour two of the Richmond Weavers Show presented by Ingles Markets.
Rolls on right here on one O four nine Fox
Sports Upstate and you can join the conversation eight six
four two four zero five four eight zero.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Again that number is eight six.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Four two four zero. As we have a full studio
here today, mister Trey Falco behind the mic, but it's
in turn Miguel Hernandez behind the board and also behind
the mic. He did say hello a little bit earlier today,
so one more time, say hello, mister Miguel. Let's here
we go exactly, just a low key here on this Wednesday,

(00:36):
as we do have a beautiful day here in the Upstate.
The rain last night, the thunderstorms, all of that came
rolling through Greenville. I don't know how it was for you,
mister Falco and Anderson Nice. I mean they did thunder
but it did like it. So yeah, well it's the
dogs that were crazy. That's that's the issue, is that
some of these dogs. Yeah, and love my wife to death,

(00:59):
love our dogs to death. But my goodness, she did
very well, yes exactly, so I might have had a
little rough night sleep there, but we do have a
beautiful day here.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
In the Upstate.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
It's humid, it's hot, but it's August, it's summer. We
know that it's part of it, and I am excited.
At the bottom of the hour, though, we are going
to talk with Alex Urban, the executive director on the
PGA Tour for the Tour Championship down in Atlanta at
East Lake. Looking forward to being able to get a

(01:31):
little bit more insight as we'll go inside the ropes
with our golf segment understanding, Can Scotti Scheffler, Can he
win the FedEx Cup Championship next week there in Atlanta?
And obviously we know how dominant he has been just
in the world of golf and trying to get to
that same type of level as a Tiger Woods. Yeah, again,

(01:54):
he doesn't have the same bravado. We get all of that,
We know that, but wins are wins, they are Domination
is still domination. He might not have that aura where people,
you know, see Tiger Woods coming up and automatically get nervous.
He might not have that in terms of when he's

(02:14):
walking up, but you can't tell me. They're also not
like looking and when they see Scotty Scheffler on the
leader board making a run like, oh, here we go,
here he comes.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah they do.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I feel like, obviously I've never met either men, so
I can't say this as somebody that knows them, but
it feels like Scotty Shffler might be a little more
personable or a little easier to get along with out
there on the course, just based on his personality kind
of just seems like a dude. But to your point,
I guarantee they see that name up there and oh man,
here we go again.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
No question about it.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
And I know this past weekend when Tommy Fleetwood when
he was winning the tournament there at the Saint Jude
in Memphis and Scotty Scheffler started making a run. The
broadcasters we're talking about it is that yeah, oh does
does Tommy realize here comes Scotti Scheffler. But they didn't

(03:06):
take into consideration that it was Justin Rose that was
really making me run there. And obviously Justin Rose was
able to get that victory there in the playoff against
JJ Spawn. But I am excited to be able to
talk a little golf as we will whittle down to
the top thirty. After the BMW Championship in Maryland this

(03:27):
weekend and it'll just be the top thirty that we'll
be playing in Atlanta. And we do have two Clemson
former Clemson Tigers that are in the top thirty right now,
Jacob Bridgeman at twenty seven and Lucas Glover at number thirty.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
So they're right on that cusp.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
They've got to stay within that top thirty to be
able to continue there in the playoffs on the PGA Tour.
So again at the bottom of the hour, we will
talk with Alex Urban, the executive director on the PGA
Tour for the tour championship down at East Lake in Atlanta.
Speaking of hot weather and here in August college football,

(04:05):
we know we're oh so close, and we've talked about
the AP pole, but now it's come out, we know
exactly how the AP voters voted. Oh okay, and so
I wanted to take a look at because of the
two teams here in the state of South Carolina and
how much we've been talking about how great it would

(04:29):
be for both teams to be in the national narrative,
to be in the national spotlight, to have an opportunity
to get to the college football playoff right and potentially
win a national championship. And yes, I think most people
in the state would agree that Clemson has a better
opportunity roster wise, probably a better roster than South Carolina.

(04:51):
But anything can happen, because Clemson probably had a better
roster last year, but South Carolina was able to win. Now,
you could probably debate that in terms of roster because
the defense for South Carolina was just lights out. Oh
they were so good last year, and you know how
they will be able to replace that. So maybe you know,
it's a minuscule type of difference last year from a

(05:14):
roster perspective, But inherently, I just think we would automatically
jump to maybe not conclusion, but just jump to, oh, well, yeah,
Clemson is Clemson. They've been more in the national spotlight,
so they're going to have a better roster. Yeah, you default,
That's that's the word I was looking for. You default
to that. But maybe that was not the case last year,

(05:36):
but this year, based on what South Carolina had lost,
I think you would probably say that Clemson from a
production standpoint, has a better roster. Yeah, that doesn't always
equate to wins. You've got to stay healthy. Oh, there's
certain things that have to fallow your way. Sometimes the
ball just has to bounce your way. We do know that.
But I was curious to see with the sixty five

(05:59):
AP voter out there, where Clemson was in terms of
who had them or where was their highest ranking, because
we know in that they're in the AP their fourth
in the coaches pole, their sixth, and then for South Carolina,
we know they're both thirteenth in the coaches poll, yeah,

(06:21):
and thirteenth in the AP pole. But I was curious
to see, like where South Carolina, what was the highest
ranking that they had and what might have been the
lowest ranking that they had, And then the same for Clemson,
what was the highest ranking that they had versus the
lowest ranking, Because we do know it's an average. That's
that's it's the total number of points and it's somewhat

(06:43):
of an average, all right, So for the Clemson Tigers
at number four, the highest ranking that they actually had
was number one. There were there's voters that said Clemson
is the number one team, and one of those voters,
Rhys Davis of ESPN, as Clemson Tigers number one in

(07:09):
the country on his poll. And then you also have
another individual, Greg Media and he covers University of Virginia,
so maybe he's aligned to an ACC.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
So he has the Clemson.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Tigers there at number one. And you also have Kochie
Riley who actually is in Baton Rouge and covers LSU. Interesting, yes,
and so you also have John Wilner who has Clemson
as number one and he's out on the West coast
for the San Jose Mercury News. So number one. That

(07:47):
was the highest for Clemson. All right, what's the highest
for South Carolina?

Speaker 2 (07:53):
You have a guess? Then remember they're.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Thirteenth third, No is that how it's lower?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Okay? Sixth no, lower, lower, tenth? There you go, ten
is and I think that's about right.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Yeah, based on what they're having to replace, based on yes,
there is a lot of excitement with Leonora's sellers, so
they are tenth. Chris Murray there in Nevada has them
tenth on his poll, and also Garland Gillen, who covers
LSU as well, has South Carolina tenth on his poll.

(08:32):
And that's the highest that we see South Carolina. And
then also Bob Blue in Austin, Texas has South Carolina
as number ten. Now the lowest for South Carolina who
not ranked. Yeah, there's six people that have South Carolina

(08:57):
off their ballot. Oh wow, okay, out of the sixty five,
and one of those is Rhys Davis. Really, ESPN does
not have South Carolina in the top twenty five. Interesting,
and then Brett McMurphy on the Action Network and now
he's actually with on three, he doesn't have South Carolina

(09:22):
on his ballot in the top twenty five.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
So you see, there's.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Still some people that are not buying into South Carolina
initially right now, and I do think that some of
those people are going to be proven wrongh that. Again,
I don't know if they're just following into not really
understanding the narrative, so to speak, or maybe they're falling into,

(09:48):
I should say, the narrative that they lost so much
on defense and they're not taking into consideration what they
actually do have coming back and the transfers that they do. Also,
I think there's something that things are starting to turn
at South Carolina and you've got a quarterback that's coming
back and the end of the day, yeah, their defense

(10:11):
might not be able to hold teams to seventeen points,
but they also have an offense now that can score
over twenty four points exactly because you've got Lenora sellers,
so you can if you hold a team to twenty points,
you think you've got a good shot based on your offense.
And now again, I know running back is still a

(10:32):
question mark, and as you heard right there at the
top of the hour, they still don't know the verdict
as far as Faison Russul is. He's going to be
able to be eligible in play according to the NCAA,
and maybe banged up a little bit, but I don't
think that's going to be an issue. The issue is
you just need to find out if he's going to be
able to play her, right, Yeah, And that's a big

(10:54):
discussion going on right now. So it's just interesting to
see how some of these teams, and I'm all about
the transparency.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
I want to.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
See how these voters are voting, and we should have
more of this. Oh, we should have some of these
voters being able to talk about this. And Nicole Auerback,
who actually does a really good job for the athletic
she actually did a complete story about her record of voting,

(11:26):
and I liked how she was able to describe the
reasons why and understand a little bit more of the
rationale that she has, So I just thought it was
interesting with that AP preseason poll top twenty five. Let
me know your thoughts eight six four two four zero
five four eight zero. Again that number is eight six

(11:46):
four two four zero five four eight zero. We're going
to continue this Wednesday edition of the Richmond Weaver Show
presented by Ingles Markets. Right after this the Wednesday edition,
another Richmond Weavers Show presented by Ingles Markets continues right
here one oh four nine five Sports Upstate as we
are rolling through hour two here on this Wednesday edition,

(12:07):
and you can join the conversation eight six four two
four zero five four eight zero.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Again that number is eight six.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Four two four zero five four eight zero if you
want to jump in and join the conversation and let
us know if your thoughts in the world of sports,
obviously getting ready for some college football NFL as we've
been talking win totals both on the college side and
the NFL. So make sure that you join the conversation.

(12:36):
Remember that number eight six four two four zero five
four eight zero as.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
We will continue talking more.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
And remember at the bottom of the hour, we've got
Alex Urban, the executive director on the PGA Tour for
the tour championship.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
He will join us, so we will.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
Talk a little golf as we get ready for the
finale next week down in Atlanta at East Lake. See
who will be crowned the champion on the PGA Tour.
All right, let's take a look at the latest headlines.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
It's only one game player, and that's to take care
of Ben hitting the latest headlines. It's the daily rundown.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
All right right here in our backyard in Spartanburg. The
Southern Conference announced today that Tennessee Tech will become a
member effective July first, real, twenty twenty six, and will
be again competition for the twenty twenty six twenty seven
academic year.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Congrats, that's all. So there we go.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Expansion continues and realignment continues.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Conference realignment. It's not all about the big boys right
even here.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
The Southern Conference and Southern Conference has a long history.
And if you go back and look at the teams
that are in the ACC right now, the teams that
are in the SEC, many of those started in the
Southern Conference all the way back, oh yeah, nineteen twenty one.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
So there's a rich history there.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
So absolutely fantastic for Michael Cross, the commissioner there for
the Southern Conference as they're able to add a quality
team like Tennessee Tech Equality University. So congratulations there to
everybody there with the Southern Conference. So stay tuned for
more of that that's happening. And how about this, in

(14:30):
speaking of Tennessee the Tennessee Volunteers though, they have.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Announced that they have signed a.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
New ten year deal with Adidas and will no longer
be wearing Nike and it will feature a multi million
dollar nil component.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
There you go, there's your players. There we go again.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
It comes back to this nil component. That is not
true the endorsement deals, right, This is all about how
can you have another recruiting opportunity and this is just
another weapon that they can use in this new recruiting
Frontier apparel, multimedia partners supplying above the revenue cap crash

(15:19):
to pay some of these athletes. And again, this is
where we're getting into this new race of it's pay
for play. We just need to recognize that and say
it rather than keep continuing to say that it's name,
image and likeness.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
It's not. It's not endorsement deals.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Right, And I mean It's not gonna obviously fix everything,
but I think it would help alleviate some of the
weird challenges that we have where we have to jump
around and go through all these loopholes and stuff that
we keep doing to try and pay these players.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Just pay, just do it.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
We're to that point now, Yeah, is it going to
hurt our entertainment? Is it going to hurt our enthusiasm
come Saturdays?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Has it in the last couple of years that they've
started paying? So then why do you think it would
change in the future.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Does it matter if a nineteen or a twenty year
old or even an eighteen year old is making five
hundred thousand dollars?

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Now what if they were doing it for a fortune
five hundred company? Yeah, nobody who would care?

Speaker 1 (16:17):
No, they wouldn't because we're still stuck in the past
that we're still thinking amateurism and how it has shifted
over the years and has evolved. So there is something
to think about, you know, from that perspective. And speaking
of all of that, how about this down Staley. Obviously

(16:38):
we know head coach women's basketball down at South Carolina
who is also a Hall of Famer. Oh, he's in
the college basketball the Naysmith Hall of Fame, I should
say there, because there is no college basketball. It's just
the Nasmith Basketball Hall of Fame. But she was on
the Michelle Obama podcast and talking about this new frontier,

(16:59):
the revenue share nil and interestingly enough, she had a
little nugget there saying that South Carolina players will sign
in DA's non disclosure agreements around their revenue sharing cash
that they receive, So it's not going to be transparent,

(17:21):
it's not going to be public. And I think that's
one of the things that at least what we see
in professional sports.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
I mean, we see it all the time.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
We know what these players are making, we know that
they continue to rise. But this is where I get
frustrated with college that we still try to move around
in this world of secrecy and the unknowns and oh,
well it's reported, we think it's this much, we think
the market value for this quarterback is this much.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Let's understand what they're making. Yeah, that's part of it.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
And as a player, as a student athlete, so to speak,
you have to be okay with that, right because you
can't have the positive sides of everything and not have
some of the other consequences that you'll come along with
it and the responsibilities, and some of that is that, hey,
people are gonna know what you're gonna make.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Right well, And I have to wonder too if maybe
it'll help alleviate some of the fan backlash, because part
of it too is, oh, well, all these players are
making this amount of money. But if you could see
what all the players are making, then maybe you realize, oh,
maybe it's not all players, maybe it's only a handful.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
They're really good, yes, And that's why let's move away
from the secrecy. Yeah, transparency. I'm okay with the transparency
in tennis. Then Venus Williams will make her return to
Grand Slam tennis at the US Open after a two
year absence. She did receive a wild card invitation to

(18:51):
compete in singles, And I love this because what we
saw with both Serena and Venus being able to explode
on the world of tennis, the scene of tennis, I
just think it's a great opportunity to continue to embrace
some of that and we'll see what happens. Yeah, yeah, no, no,
you never know what happens, all right. I also saw

(19:12):
this and I did not know this. Are you a
Rocky movie fan?

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Yeah? Rocky three?

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Okay, Yeah, Okay, Dolph Lundren right, Von Drago? Yeah, do
you know that he actually attended Clemson University for a
period of time?

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Really had no idea.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
John Blough, who does a great job for the Post
and Courier, posted on x that he's now in South Carolina.
He's was in Columbia, yeah, and taking a picture with
the game Cock mascot, but had mentioned that he actually
went to Clemson and studied engineering for a period of

(19:54):
time and dropped out to pursue the acting career and
then also ended up going to MIT. Wow, this is
a Van Drago I must break you right, absolutely crazy
type of story right now, world, That is all right,
that's some of the latest headlines, and we come back.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
We're gonna talk a little bit of golf.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
We'll be joined by Alex Urban, executive director of the
Tour Championship part of the PGA Tour down at East Lake.
Much more right after this, The Wednesday edition of the
Richmond Weavers Show, presented by Ingles Markets continues right here
on one oh four nine Fox Sports Upstate. As we're
rolling through our number two and yes, We've been talking

(20:39):
a lot of football. We know NFL college football is
getting ready to start, but also we're winding down the
PGA Tour season and next week is the finale the
Tour Championship down in Atlanta. So yes, we're going to
talk a little golf. Let's go inside the.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
Ropes, from the fairways to the headlights. It's inside the
Ropes driven by the BMW charity program presented by td Sinax.
You're all access pass to golf's biggest needs and best moments.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
All right, we are honored to be joined by Alex Urban,
the executive director of the Tour Championship part of the
PGA Tour down in Atlanta at East Lake.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
Alex, thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
I know you are probably running one hundred miles per
hour right now getting ready for next week, and I
do have to first and foremost ask you, as you're
trying to steer this ship one of the biggest PGA
Tours events of the season, exactly what does executive director mean?

Speaker 5 (21:46):
A good question, Well, one, you honored to have me.
I'm honored to be on. Thank you for having me.
You know, I love this is something I can talk about.
It it's golf, THEPGA Tour. What does that mean? Basically
have a better term. You know, it's sort of like
you're you're sort of the steward of the event, and
so I'm and you're there's so many different tentacles and

(22:10):
things that the event touches, both internally on the PGA
Tour side. It's a whole bunch of departments required to
put on a PGA Tour event, but also sponsors community fans, yes,
other other events that kind of thing. And and I'm
sort of the clearing house for everything. So I've listened
to everything, try to make connections where they where they

(22:30):
need to be connected, try to help with roadblocks if
they come up from my team, and then you know,
make sure everyone's happy and has a great event. That's
that's sort of the and I've got a wonderful team
and so it really helps, like you know, the details
and things, they're really down in those. And so outside
of that too, it's strategizing for the future and how
we continue to get better and better. Yeah, there's a

(22:52):
lot of pieces to it.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
Yes, Well it's not to say you make it sound
so easy that, yes, we just pull all this together.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
And I know it's not just that easy.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
So how do you and your team and sure that
this event is ready to showcase the elite golfers there
on the PGA Tour and also again making you know,
East Lake the perfect stage for this battle for the
FedEx Cup.

Speaker 5 (23:14):
Well, we're we're really lucky to have a venue like
eas playing no doubt to be able to play a
tournament like the Tour Championship and start twenty fifth playing here.
So that's a really nice thing, and that we have
long standing relationships with the folks at the golf course
and just makes life a lot easier. Because then for us,
you know, in the live event business, you talk about

(23:37):
how to you know, quote unquote make things better. You've
got to constantly come up with ideas. It's so easy
to sit at home and watch things on TV. You
think about any sports that way, right, And so to
get people off the couch to buy a ticket, to
figure out how to go park and figure out how
to brave the heat and all the things that are
required to come move a Tour championship, you better make
sure that it's fun out there. So it's working with partners,

(23:59):
it's working with new technologies and fan experiences and trying
to make it fun for everyone. Whether you're a big
time golf fan, we got plenty of great things for
those folks, but also for families and also for people
that just want to come out because they're in Atlanta
and Atlanta's an event town and they want to come
out and have a few cocktails outside because it's beautiful

(24:21):
and maybe they see Scotti Shuffler hit a few shots.
Maybe they don't, but it's still a great atmosphere and
there's good energy.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Around it, no question.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
Alex Urban is our guest executive director of the tour
Championship set to start next week in Atlanta at East Lake,
And you talk about some of those things for the
fans for this year, what's new in the fan experience
from your perspective, and some of the things that they
should be able to enjoy.

Speaker 5 (24:47):
Well, there's certainly a lot, and I could go for
a long time on this topic, but I will give
you some of the highlights. Yes, we have a brand
new official airline of a PGA Tour in Delta Airlines.
As you might imagine, we're excited to do a whole
lot here at the Torch Championship since we were just
a few miles from the heart of Delta Country over
at the Atlanta Airport, and so you know, they're doing

(25:11):
a whole bunch of stuff, but some stuff that's public
facing that's benefits for fans on site. One of which
is sponsoring the Delta Starter Lounge on the first tee,
which is has a public viewing deck above it that's
shaded and has a bar. So you want to watch
the guy's t offs and start their round, that's the
perfect place to do it. And then we have a
new venue this year, the Delta sky Miles Deck, which

(25:33):
is near the seventeenth Green eighteenth t You also see
the twelfth Green and the approach shot over there, so
really nice kind of three sixty golf views that if
you have a sky Miles membership, which in this market
is a lot of people, yeah, you get access into
that venue and there's a bar up there and there'll
be some snacks and that kind of stuff, some Delta giveaways.
So that's the one we're really excited about. We have

(25:56):
a covered bleacher that's new on the Driving Range by
City of Hope Cancer Center, Atlanta. This is a good
you know, our tea times are a little later. Our
tea times are you know, Thursday, Friday, Sunday right around
eleven sixteen eleven fifteen, and then an hour later on Saturday.
So our range is a great place to go watch
the guys grind a little bit before they start. It's

(26:17):
a lot of fun. If you're a golf person, watching
those guys hit at the range is quite an experience
because they're doing things that said I certainly am never
going to do with a golf club, and so that
that's a fun one too. And then just all kinds
of public activations. You know, our three proud partners, Accentria,
Coca Cola and Southern Company all have public facing things,
whether it's fan areas like the So Cool Zone or

(26:38):
the Coca Cola Lounge, or stand enhancements. We have a
brand new three D map that we're calling our Smart Maps,
presented by Centsure, and then Accentser is also sponsored. One
of my favorite things we do, which is two kids
fifteen and under in free with every ticketed adult. And
that's not something you see in sports kind of anything.

(26:58):
In this day and age, everything feels like it's getting
more expensive. This is something we're really proud to do.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
Oh, fantastic. And you talked about the Driving Range though.
I think it's one of the hidden gyms that you
can go and watch those guys on the Driving Range,
Alex and just the Divot the Divot lines. I'm amazed
as far as what you see, and again talking about
how these guys can shape the ball, especially on the
Driving Range. And east Lake though, and I'm a huge

(27:26):
fan of east Lake. I grew up in the Atlanta area.
I've been fortunate enough to play east Lake a couple
of times, and I joke that it's my home course,
and it's obviously not, but I love it so much.
But we also know that east Lake it's a cornerstone
of the Atlanta community and it's been around for a
long time and the renovation even going all the way

(27:48):
back to you know, the east Lake Foundation back in
the late nineties, but also even with Andrew Green doing
some of the renovations.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
Talk about that, because we've had Andrew on the show.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Before, and I just think it's fantastic when you have
the history of a course like that, but you can
also move it into this new age and somebody like
Andrew Green being able to be a part of that renovation.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
Yeah, well said, I mean, it's one of my favorite
things about this place is that you've got the home
of Bobby Jones where he learned to play the game
of golf right right here. And you've got that tradition
and that's Donald Ross and it's it's a classic golf course.
And then the modern the intersection with the modern history
of the game. And obviously Andrew did a wonderful job
in the restoration work he did where we you know,

(28:36):
before last year's tournament, but also the modern history of
the game from FedEx Cup perspective that's been you know,
we're at our twenty fifth playing in the tournament here
for our nineteenth FedEx Cup. Wow, which is that's a lot.
And you start to create, I mean, you can start
to think back to some of the historical moments throughout
the year, throughout the years. You think about you know,
Bill hots hitting out of the water, Jim Furick made

(28:57):
a putt in the rain, or Billy Horschell gator chomping
in front of everyone in this country, which I can
that is like seared into my brain. Rory gives three
and Tiger, all these people. I mean, it's part of
the history of the game, and so that's really cool,
and that's something that you know, you don't get that everywhere.
And I think East Lakes as a venue is just

(29:18):
tremendous and it's only gotten better since the work that
Andrew and team did. And then this year another additional
wrinkle in that, you know, we've eliminated the starting strokes
in this yet, so all thirty guys are going to
show up with a chance to win, the same chance
to win they're going to start. So we're doing seventy
two holes of even stroke play, and they're also kind

(29:40):
of intentionally going to do some things I think, to
try to make it play a little bit more difficult,
you know, maybe a little bit more rough, maybe some
tougher pins, maybe a little longer. So I think it
could be a really fun test. I will be a
very fun test next week, and hopefully we get we
get a fun finish, and certainly with this field, we
know we're going to get some quality golf.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
I can hear yes, so we definitely are.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
He is Alex Urban, executive director of the Tour Championship
at East Lake and things will tee off next Thursday
as the top thirty will be competing for the FedEx
Cup Championship. And we know that the whittle that down
the top fifty right now will be playing in Maryland
starting tomorrow and the top thirty will move on to Atlanta.

(30:23):
And Alex you talked about no longer the stroke portion
of these guys coming to Atlanta. Your thoughts on that
and just how the PGA tour continues. Hey, we can
try things and you know, make some adjustment, make some
adjustments and evolve at the same time to try to
give the fans the best product available and also the

(30:47):
players and their input and making sure that they're involved
in this also.

Speaker 5 (30:53):
Yeah, absolutely, and this really came from a fan survey
and we did this huge fans. It really is the
precursor to what you'll you'll hear our new CEO Brian
Rolapp and the commissioner Jay Monahan talk about the Fan
Forward initiative, which is, look, let's listen to people figure
out what what are they like, what are they not like,
What do they want more of? What do they want

(31:13):
less of? And one of the things we heard, you
know from this last year this exercise was a more
consequential end to the season. You know, we don't like
the starting strokes. How do we fix those things? We
want to see a difficult set up golf course, all
these things. And so our players, who are very involved
in the operation of our business and decisions like these,
took a look at that and said, hey, here's what

(31:34):
we recommend from a format perspective. And you know, it's
kind of this four fans by players type type thinking
that creates this change. And look, it's going to I'm
sure it will continue to evolve. And look at that's
not unique to us. I mean you guys say you
were just talking football. I mean, look at the college
football landscape and how that's changed over the last ten years,

(31:55):
fifteen years, twenty years, you know, all the way back
to pre BCS and and how that's evolved over the
over time. And so ultimately you're trying to come up
with something that works competitively, that's compelling, that is also
fun to watch, so that people want to show up
or turn on the TV and watch compelling competition.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
How important was it to be able to shift the
schedule and have the Tour Championship before the college football
and NFL season started.

Speaker 5 (32:24):
Yeah, it's that was a huge piece. If you recall
they moved the Players Championship you know, had been they
had moved it from March to May, and then a
few years ago it switched back to March, which moved
the PGA allowed the PGA Championship to slip from August
to May, which then allowed us to finish our season
before football. Now there's the there's the occasional year where

(32:45):
that doesn't work out because of the Olympics. Yes, last
year was one of those years. But yeah, it's always
nicer when we can be wrapped up before football, especially
in this part of the country. Exactly, I'm sitting I'm
sitting ten miles from the College Football Hall of Fame
right here, so kind of a big deal around here.
I'm a Clemson guy, and and you know, we had

(33:05):
a pretty big game not too far from here on
Tournament Saturday last year. It's just a hard thing. There's
a big cross section of golf fans football fans, and
people are people are excited about football very much the
same way they are about golf, and so it's nice
to not have to be on the same weekend as
those types of events, for sure.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
No doubt.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
As we're wrapping up with the Alex Urban, executive director
of the Tour Championship down there in Atlanta at East
Lake and again things will be teeing off next Thursday.
And I'm also at Clemson Grad Alex so yes, so
we can have.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
Our orange colored lenses on at times.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
And your thoughts heading into this twenty twenty five season
for the Clemson Tigers with a big game, I'm I'm.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
Very excited about the star. I the A'll be at
the opener. That'll be a fun one. You know, I
find myself I fell it fairly realistic fan, But what
I think is really exciting. It felt like when we
were really good and we had that incredible run, there
were three position groups that were really outstanding, and you
had the defensive front four yes, the quarterback and the

(34:16):
wide receivers.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
No doubt.

Speaker 5 (34:18):
And it feels to me like that's the strength of
this team. So if that's the formula, then maybe maybe
you we're in for a fun year.

Speaker 4 (34:25):
I hope, we hope.

Speaker 2 (34:26):
Yes, it's the season of hope right now at least Alans.
I'm a hoper.

Speaker 5 (34:30):
I don't take it for granted. I feel like we're
playing with house money. If you'd have told me when
I was I graduated in twenty eleven, you'd have told
me that we'd have two national championships the next ten years.
I'm not sure I to believe you. I am trying
to be an appreciative fan.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
No doubt, I truly understand that. All right, last one,
alex O, because I am curious with your position and
you know, being a sports fan, being a golf fan,
how challenging is it for you though, to be able
to be a fan during the week, because you're also
involved in so many things making sure that everything is

(35:06):
running to give the fans and the players and everybody
involved the best experience.

Speaker 5 (35:11):
Yeah. Well, I mean I'm a massive golf fan. I
love I love watching the game. I will not see
much golf next week that I can guarantee you. There
there will be a few shots that I'll catch by accident,
but it's it's not a ton of of you know,
sit back and watch, you know, for fun. I'll have
it on if I'm at my desk, which is rare

(35:32):
on a tournament day, I have the coverage on on
my TV and I'm usually watching it to see how
it's coming off on TV. How does it look do
all the signage look good, do the people look like
does it look like it has good energy? That kind
of stuff, and then I'll all reflect after the fact.
So thankfully for you know, fifty one weeks out of
the year, I can focus on being a golf fan.
Next week is more about delivering for all the golf

(35:54):
fans here.

Speaker 1 (35:55):
Well, I know you're going to be ramping up getting
ready for next week, and can't thank you enough to
be able to spend a few minutes here letting us
get a little bit more insight into the Tour Championship
and tickets. Can fans still get tickets right now?

Speaker 5 (36:11):
And absolutely the poor Championship dot com is your one
stop shop. We have a few hospitality type experiences still
available last couple so if that's your thing, that's available.
But certainly our grounds experience is awesome and I mentioned
the kids in free piece. Yes, we also have some
military offers too if you're a if you're a veteran
or an active duty current serving So please go to

(36:34):
Tour Championship dot com and check that out.

Speaker 1 (36:37):
Right there, you heard demand, make sure you go check
that out, get your tickets. I promise you you will
have a fantastic time down at East Lake. I will
be there next week. I did hear from Tracy Viale,
so she did approve for next Yes, he's in charge,
that's right, Yes exactly. I'll at least try to seek
you out and at least shake your hand as you're
running by.

Speaker 5 (36:56):
Well, I would love that. That sounds like a plan.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
Awesome. Thank you, Alex. We appreciate your time. Enjoy the
rest of the week.

Speaker 5 (37:04):
Thanks for having me. Take care guys.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
That is Alex Urban, executive director of the Tour Championship
part of the PGA Tour that we'll be heading down
to East Lake in Atlanta next week tee and off
on Thursday, and again get your tickets Tour Championship dot com.
As we will wrap up this Wednesday edition of The
Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets. Right after this,

(37:28):
the Wednesday edition of The Richmond Weavers Show presented by
Ingles Markets continues right here on one O four nine
Fox Sports Upstate, as we are getting ready to hand
things off to mister John Ellis and game on and
he will be with you for the rest of drive
time until seven pm, So make sure you stick right
here on one O four nine Fox Sports Upstate, and

(37:48):
we did have some Texters texting in earlier. Sewn texted
in and said, I told Trey on John Show that
I thought Aaron Rodgers is going to have an MVP
season and that the Steelers will least make it to
the conference championship.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (38:03):
Record, And he also said fourteen wins, and I imagine
he's referring to the Commanders. Fourteen wins for the commanders.
We were talking about over under wind totals for the
Commanders there. And also Chad the Vending King did chime
in and corrected me in terms of Rocky it was
Rocky four with Von Drago, not Rocky three.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
Rocky three was mister Teeth. That's right. And see but
that's hey, when you have.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
All of this in your hard drive, right, you can't
keep all of it straight.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
Yeah, so that happened the exactly.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Yes, they did have all these other type of Rockies
out there, so we do have to remember that. But
I do remember distinctly the Rocky two when I was
much younger. Yeah, I remember going to that and thinking
that was the greatest movie I'd ever seen at the time,

(39:01):
and it was just I don't know why I remember
that movie so much obviously, I mean it was still
a good movie, yeah, no doubt. But it's definitely one
of those things that does stay on the hard drive.
But other things in life, I don't know what's that.

Speaker 2 (39:16):
So where's it right now? This is still the greatest
movie here? No it's not. No, it's still up there,
no question, it's still up there.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
I'm a big fan of like a Gladiator, a Tombstone,
Brave Heart, good Fellas. Yeah, those are the type of movies.

Speaker 2 (39:32):
That are high up on my list. So there we go.

Speaker 1 (39:36):
I like it, okay, But sports movies, yes, I love
Rocky definitely that series up until four. I think after
that I was okay with that. Not a huge happy Gilmore.
Oh really yeah, I mean about it. Yeah, we did
talk about that. Remember the Titans.

Speaker 2 (39:55):
That's a good one. Hoosiers love that. And then Rudy.

Speaker 1 (39:59):
I mean I'll cry every time with Rudy, I just do. Sorry,
that just happens, right, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 5 (40:07):
All right.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
We also have a texture texting in Matthew Hill saying
technically six Rockies after five.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
Is Rocky Balboa. Okay, so there you go.

Speaker 1 (40:15):
All right, got see That's why we have our investors.
They'll keep us straight and we appreciate it. You can
always use the text line eight sixty four triple seven,
ninety five, ninety three. It is August thirteenth, So let's
walk back in a little bit of history.

Speaker 4 (40:30):
What happened on this day. Let's go back in history
to the moments you might have forgotten and the ones
you'll never forget. It's otd on this day, all.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
Right, On this day back in nineteen ninety five, Steve
Elkington would shoot a sixty four and birdied the first
playoff hole to beat Colin Montgomery to win the PGA Championship.
And the sixty four is the lowest final round by
a PGA champ being winner. So yes, remember that Steve Elkington.

(41:03):
I did. I was a fan of Steve, Steve Elkinton,
Steve Elkington at one time. Again, this English language sometimes
will get me all tripped up, all right. In two
thousand and eight, Michael Phelps would swim into history as
the winningest Olympic athlete with his tenth.

Speaker 2 (41:19):
And eleventh career gold medals.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
There, So yes, Michael Phelps is the goat from a
swimming perspective. And in twenty and sixteen, the New York
Yankees had two batters with their first at bats, and
here's both of them. Listen, all right, well, we'll get

(41:45):
to the audio later, don't worry about that. But it
was Austin Davis and Aaron Judge who both had home
runs with their very first major league baseball at bats.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
Absolutely crazy back to bats.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
Home runs for players with their very first major league
at bats. I mean, that's the type of stuff you
can even script when you think about it from that perspective.
So that's why, again, we just continue to love sports
and love all of those things that are associated with that,
and that is some of the things that we enjoy

(42:21):
about sports. And also, yes, that is our OTD here
on this Wednesday edition of the Richmond Weavers Show, presented
by Engles Markets, and just know tomorrow we're going to
be broadcasting from Group Therapy, so come down and join us.
We'll be there starting at three pm there downtown Greenville

(42:42):
at the camp or down Plaza, So again make sure
you join us. Starting at three pm. Will be down
there broadcasting live and we'll get ready to hand things
off to mister John Ellis in game on and he
will be with you for drive time all the way.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
To seven pm.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
And this has been the Wednesday edition of the Richmond
Weaver Show, presented by Ingles Markets.

Speaker 2 (43:02):
We'll talk to you tomorrow
