Speaker 1 (00:01):
Exploring the latest headlines and in depth conversations. It's the
Richmond Weavers Show on one oh four nine Fox Sports
Substate presented by Ingles Low Prices, Love the Savings, Now
for riches, take on sports. Here's Richmond Weaver ready to.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Roll this Monday right here on one oh four nine
Fox Sports Ubstate. This is the Monday edition of the
Richmond Weavers Show, presented by Ingles Markets. And we are
in full force, mister Trey Falco, producer extraordinaire, behind the
board and behind the mic as always as a little
bit hot day here in the Upstate.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
But it is July, so that's part of it.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
We're okay with it, yes, as we were able to
celebrate July fourth this past weekend. And of course Nathan's
hot dog geating contest. Yes, Joey Chestnut right, seventy something
hot dogs? Yeah what seventy five and ten minutes? Yeah, yes,
seventy plus.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
I do know that.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
And that's the seventeenth time that he has won. If
you want to say one, I guess he did, it's
you know he did.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
He won. Talk about dominance, the dynasty of joe just.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Nutt, I mean the goat is there good, There's nobody
even going to come close to touching that seventeen times
and I did read it was like twenty one thousand
calories of hot dogs and buns that he ate in
ten minutes. And I'm the guy who says no, thank you. Yeah,
(01:30):
I don't even need to experience that.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I saw and I'll have to find it a Twitter
post that that logged all of his accolades, if you will,
And I mean you hit Seymour and you just scrolled.
I mean it was It's insane, from his hot his
only wings, to cakes and all kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
I mean, it's insane the stuff that the man eats.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
And it just shows you we love competition, We love
the ability to compete and give us that prize. It
doesn't matter what it is, We're going to try to
it and earn that prize. Well, you can also join
the conversation, though, give us a call. Eight six four
two four zero five four eight zero. Again that number
is eight six four two four zero five four eight zero.
(02:12):
And hopefully everybody had a fantastic fourth celebrating the birth
of this great nation and the greatest upset in history,
as I like to say. But now we are moving
things forward. And mister Falco, I did follow the advice
though of Brian Kite, author of Daily Discipline dot Com,
who we had on last week and we have him
(02:33):
on each week talking about behavior performances in sports and
life and all of that in the mindsets that you
have to have, and he highly recommended to go see
the movie F one. Yeah, yeah, And so I took
him up on that because I had mentioned that I
wanted to go see it, right, Julie and my wife,
she was a great date, great sport, went along with it,
(02:55):
went to the movies, and it delivered.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Oh all right.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
I saw it in I'm at and I love the
cinematic masterpiece that it was based on some of the
technical filming that they were able to do, and so
I geeked out a little bit on that, just seeing
how they were able to pull it all together and
again knowing more about the story of how they did
all the filming.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
And al Brad Pitt did his stunts.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
And was actually driving a Formula one or as actually
an F two car that they modified for this movie,
but he was driving two hundred miles per hour.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
I couldn't imagine.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
And you could see it on the screen that Okay,
that looks real because it was real. And that's the
one thing that I think, regardless of what the movie
is right, you wanted to come across as authentic.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
And that's where I think sports movies at times they
have missed the mark.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Some of them are like, that's not realistic, that's not
what it looks like. And they did a great job
of being able to pull in F one as an
official partner and all of the F one teams, the drivers,
even Lewis Hamilton was a producer and consultant, so made
sure that they got it right when they were filming
(04:11):
all of these scenes.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
So it's phenomenal. So we've got your review. I need
her to call in and give us her the Hey,
I went with my husband to the movies and I
wasn't geeking out like he was. That type of hounist review.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah, I went and downloaded the soundtrack. That's how much
I was geeking I stood on the way there. I
would have to say, what was crazy?
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Though.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
I didn't listen to it on the way there, but
I have been listening to it. Yeah, I was cutting
the grass yesterday and had it on, so that that
fell for two hundred miles an hour on the rider.
Well here's what was crazy though. When we left the movie,
we actually went downtown Simpsonville, the Imax there and then
went to the restaurant The Slice. I'd never been there,
great pizza place.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Yeah, so it was jam Pack went there then on
the way back.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
So now it's eight o'clock ish or whatever, eight thirty
ish or somewhere around in there. And no, no, no,
that was it was much earlier than that. That was
the previous day when we went and played golf. But
coming back, so now it's probably it's around six thirty
ish because we ate an early dinner and they're on
(05:16):
three eighty five right before it gets to I eighty
five the interchange there, it goes to like six lanes.
Oh yeah, And so I'm driving down and then it's
like nobody's on the highway and all of a sudden,
I'm like, yes, I'm bad, Yes.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
I'm his character, Sonny Hayes, and like.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
All the cars had just moved to the side, and
now I'm trying to qualify go down three eighty five.
It was a crazy feeling, I'm serious. Yeah, it was
like and I even said something to Julianne.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I was like, all right, here you go. Buckle up, babe,
let's go. And I gave it a little gas. You
gotta be careful when you walk out of movies like that.
Do Yes, you definitely do.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
But I would highly recommend go and see in f
one and do go see it in the Imax. It
was filmed with Imax cameras, so I think there's something
to be said that to try to see it the
way the director wanted you to be able to see it.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
The caveat though, was that I didn't like all.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Of the commercials before the movie that took away and
I'm not a guy who goes to the movie theaters
a lot anymore, and so I wasn't ready for that, right.
I was like, I mean, it's it's thirty minutes past
the showtime.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Now, I get you're going to show some previews and
stuff as part of it. Thirty minutes So that's a lot.
That was a lot, all right. One thing that we
didn't get a winner on.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Speaking of winners, yes is our trivia question on Thursday.
Obviously we were off on Friday, and this is for
a twenty five dollars gift card to Autobil car wash
here in the Upstate, and we had texters texting in,
but just with the wrong answer. Yeah, so I'm going
to give this question out again, so you've got the
entire hour to text us. That text number is eight
(07:00):
six four triple seven ninety five ninety three. Again, the
text line is eight six four triple seven ninety five
ninety three. So I might have stumped some people here
or they just don't even want to talk about NBA questions.
That could be it also, So I do understand that,
but this is twenty five dollars gift card right the
Autobil car Wash. It's a great opportunity to join the
(07:24):
conversation and show your ability to answer this trivia question.
All right, So here's the question. So, there's been three
players in the NBA to be able to capture a
regular season MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year, and
a Finals MVP in their career, not all in the
(07:44):
same season.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
I'm just saying in their career.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
You've got Michael Jordan, makes sense, makes sense, Hakeem olajuwon
nice that's been able to do it, and there's one
other player that has been able to do it name
that other player. Three players have been able to win MVP,
Defensive Player of the Year and Finals MVP in the NBA.
Kim Olajuan and Michael Jordan are two of them. There's
(08:10):
one other player that's been able to do it. Can
you name that player? Text in eight six four triple
seven ninety five ninety three. Again that text line eight
six four triple seven ninety five ninety three, and you
get the right answer, and the first person with that
right answer gets a twenty five dollars gift card to
Autobil car Wash. All right, I want to switch gears though. Okay, yes,
(08:35):
I know there's a lot of action going on in
the NBA. I totally understand that with free agencies, and
we've got a record trade that happened officially with Kevin
Durant and seven teams in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Sure, why not?
Speaker 2 (08:46):
But tomorrow the Big twelve starts, oh it is sc
I mean starts Big twelve Football Media Days, right, and
then on Monday we've got the SEC Football Media Days
that are starting and Shane Biemer will be on the
podium at eleven forty five am in Atlanta. Okay, to
kick off this twenty twenty five season and the first
(09:08):
opportunity to really hear from Shane Beamer and getting ready
for this season. And we will be there, so I'll
be there, got their credential. We'll be broadcasting later on
from down there. But here's something I started thinking about
because we're here. Oh yeah, we got through July fourth,
(09:29):
we got through the hot dog getting contests, right right, so,
and we've got the NFL Hall of Fame games at
the end of this month, right yeah, July thirty first,
So we're playing football in July. We do know that
we're going to talk about that also. But with the
SEC Football Media Days next week, Shane Beamer South Carolina,
and we know that there is a lot of discussions
(09:54):
going on right now about expectations, oh yeah, or sellers,
and a lot of people are gravitating towards that talent,
what we saw last year and what South Carolina was
able to do, and what South Carolina is building right
now in Columbia, and even Joel Klatt has come out
(10:16):
now and has said that South Carolina is a team
that he's putting in the College Football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Oh wow, So no pressure, no pressure whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Now you're starting to see people talk about South Carolina
on a national level, and we know they've been talking
about Leonora Sellers now on a national level, that there's
outlets that are suggesting that he's going to be a
top five in the twenty twenty six NFL draft YEP.
So think about those type of expectations and pressures. And
(10:47):
so that's why I'm trying to start getting understanding, especially
as one of four nine. Fox Sports is the official
game Cock affiliate here in the upstate, right so, and
with our signal, I mean, we can get you all
the way to almost Columbia where you can pick up
the flagship station there out of Columbia. So it's a
(11:09):
blow torch of a of a station being able to
with a wide reach. And so I just started thinking
about what are the expectations for South Carolina this year.
I know we've briefly talked about it, but now it's time,
I mean, it's time we start outlining what do we
(11:30):
fully expect for South Carolina in this year.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
And remember nine and four.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Season last year, a lot of talk about even at
the end of the season, could the game Cocks, could
they make a run and get an at large bids
somehow they're in the College Football Playoff and knowing that, yes,
it's a little bit disappointing, you know, not being able
to get a bowl victory, get that tenth win. I
do understand that. But this is a team that I
(11:57):
think Shane Biemer has revitalized. And knowing that, I mean,
you went from two and eight in twenty twenty and
then seven and six in his first year, including you know, a.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Mayo Bowl win the Duke's Mayo Bowl, and he gets dumped.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
With the mayonnaise right, and just all the publicity that
went along with that.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
And that's the type of stuff you can't pay for.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
And that's why I know it's like, oh, it's just
a Duke's Mayo Bowl, but you don't know who's watching,
You don't know who's seeing that type of stuff. And
then is it two years down the road that you
get a once in a lifetime type of athlete that
decides to go to your school whatever it is, Sure
there's something to be said about that. And so I'm
curious this year and like what the listeners think, what
(12:44):
are your expectations. So I'm starting to form my expectations
right now. South Carolina and That's what I want to
be able to talk about. But I'm also I'm curious
what the true South Carolina fans, what their expectations are.
And knowing that, Okay, you have to be realistic, you
do yes, and sometimes lightning in the bottle happens. We
(13:09):
do know that that you can go nine and four
one year and then you have an opportunity playing for
the national championship next year. Something like that can happen.
I'm not saying it's not out of the realm of happening.
But if it doesn't happen, say you make it to
the College Football Playoff and you get beat in the
first round, you got to take that as that's progress,
(13:32):
right exactly. That's something that you haven't done before. And
I know there's been expansion in the college football Playoff.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
I get all of that.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
That's where you have to be careful as far as
what expectations you're setting and how that could lead to
frustration if it doesn't follow through exactly how you think
those expectations are. So that's why I'm curious as far
as like, Okay, later on week, I'm going to give
you my expectations South Carolina and where I think they
(13:59):
should fall based on what I'm seeing with Shane Biember.
But I want to hear from game cock fans out
there eight six four two four zero five four eight zero.
Game that number is eight six four two four zero
five four eight zero. And let's head out to the
INGOs hot line right now, the Richmond Weaver Show.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
Who's this Richmond Weaver? How is everything going there with
you guys.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Doing fantastic Billy? How about you? Sir?
Speaker 5 (14:22):
You know, I've been thinking about football. So South Carolina
and Illinois ended up.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Another game, So that's right.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
I've had my mind on this through the whole entire
off season and that counts. That counts recruiting, the poortal everything,
you know, injuries, I've been looking at everything, and here's
where I'm at. And I you know, I was one
of the few. And listen, it's only a twelve game
sample size. I'm not going to include a bowl game.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
So I was I.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Feel like I very you know, big time underestimated what
South Carolina was going to be last year. And I
was actually one of the most optimistic voices that you
could hear in this area on the radio about South
Carolina at seven and five. That's where I thought they
were going to be last year, and I feel like
that I underestimated because it was, you know, off by
two games. I feel like at a twelve game season
(15:08):
that you should be within one game. So now, having
said all that, this is where I really believe that
the expectations should be this year. I think the floor
to me for this team now, and this is with
one caveat obviously barring some kind of a catastrophic inns
of course, you know with sailors, but you can't you
(15:28):
can't predict that. And even if that happens, I mean,
I think they're pretty good at the quarterback position now
behind him, but you know, I'm basing all my expectations
on him being the starting quarterback for the majority of
the year. So here he goes. I think the floor
is eight and four and the ceiling is tending to
mm hmm.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
And when you look at this, yes, and when you
look at their schedule, that does seem doable in both ways.
So I don't think you're that range is too big
of a gap, if that makes sense, Billy, Because of
I think there's some realism there and optimism there.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Yes, And that's what That's where I'm getting at, and
I kind of well, and the reason I came at
that number is I'm sort of expecting a nine in
three season again, which you know, to some people are
going to be disappointing because they're wanting to get to
the playoffs and that may get them in the play
It appearently the nine and three is it might. So
that's exactly and if they're not, I know I would
(16:25):
be disappointed. But you know what, based upon where we
were when Muschamp was there, the last two or three
years of Muschamps there, I mean, this is a drastic
improvement and I feel like you've got to look at
other aspects of the program. There is no doubt in
my mind. Yes, and I've said this to you. I listen,
one thing I was completely wrong about. I've heard you
say this about Dado Sweeny. I thought that Sane Deemer
(16:48):
was a wrong hire. I did not think he was
the right guy. I wanted Jamie Chadwell badly, and I
think that's going to end up being wrong. Now that
didn't mean that Chadwell wouldn't have done a good job,
but I just don't see Chadwell would have came in
and done better than Beemer has done. And if you
look at recruiting and the way he's handling the program
as a whole, and I'm not just talking about recruiting
(17:10):
at the high school level, we're talking about the pull
hole and everything. No doubt, I just still like it.
They're going to consistently win eight games now and that's
probably going to be their low bar from this point forward,
and we would have never said that outside of what
five or six years was Burrier and that's it. So
in my opinion, I think he is going to go
(17:30):
down as the winning gas football coach in South Carolina history.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
I think he's right on that pace. There's no question.
I know he's got a long way to go. I
get that, Billy, but I agree with you in terms
of he's.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
The right guy. But progress isn't always linear. We do
know that.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Remember, I mean, it was a five and seven season
after an eight and five season, and then you go
nine to four last season. So again, it's not that
upward trajectory that is a straight line necessarily, but the
foundation is there, and I think you're at a point
now also is that you're getting involved in national conversations,
(18:10):
and it's not just a regional team. It's actually being
talked about from a national perspective. And a lot of
that has to do with when you have a player
like a Leonoris Sellers, but also when you have the
ability to go out and win nine games, and especially
as the propaganda will tell you that the SEC is
(18:30):
the hardest conference ever to play in, and maybe there
is some truth to that. I do understand that it
is a challenging schedule, and that's way South Carolina. We'll
have a challenging schedule here in twenty twenty five, and
we'll talk about it later in the week. There is
there's gonna be some pivotal games that, to your point, Billy,
that are going to decide if it's eight and four,
for it's ten and two.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
Yeah, there's no doubt about that. And you're talking about
the lenear stretch. You know, it's not always linear when
you're improving, and I get that. That's why I was
so worried about last year. Yeah, you know, I wanted
to be optimistic. I did feel like that they were
going to be better, and I thought nor Sellis was
going to be bad, was going to be a better quarterback.
I really believe this, you know, I've said this on
your show prior to the season, than even Rattler was
(19:13):
Now he was better than I was anticipating. So that's
saying something. But I feel like if they would have
you know, somehow didn't get to a bowl when a
bowl game last year for whatever reason, then you know,
I was worried about what was going to happen because
I could see the foundation that Demer was building and
it was obvious to me that they was improving drastically.
(19:34):
I just feel like we turned the corner with last year.
It's not because we got to the nine to one season,
it's just because you've got to you know, you got
to set a foundation. It's set. I think he's proved
of these young men in high school and across college football,
you know, because there's a portal now every year's open
season that you can't you're not you know, it used
to be rich when when you was younger that there
(19:56):
was a big negative recruiting with South Carolina. It's it's
hard to do that right now. Say Shane Bieber has
over exceeded expectations three out of the four years he's
been here.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
Agreed.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
And that's something that you have to be able to
point to if you're a South Carolina fan, is that Yeah,
it might not happen overnight, but it's happening. Just stay
patient and that's the biggest thing. And Billy, we do
appreciate the call. We got to hit this break.
Speaker 5 (20:21):
Yeah, some more quick thing here, Rich you know, I
don't know you know this and this doesn't matter, but
the Vegas guys has the season total for South Carolina
at seven and a half and they're leaning towards the Andre.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
I don't know what they're seeing. I think they're completely
wrong about that, but they were, like I said, three
of the last four years. Anyway, I appreciate you guys.
Thank you, how good.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Day, Thank you Billy.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
We do appreciate it as always. And I know, hey,
Vegas knows, they know so many times. But seven and
a half, yeah, I'll take that over. Yeah, I'll take
that over all day long with South Carolina. And again,
I know they've got some things that they it's there's
definitely some strings.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
You've got Leonora Sellers, you've got Dylan Stewart there on
the edge. I get all of that, and you know,
maybe your offensive line can be a little bit better,
might be young, but that's that's okay. But I just
think that there's there's something that's happening at South Carolina
that seems to be a little bit of the it factor.
And I don't have like specific way to define it,
(21:23):
but again, it's just something that you see. It's just
something that, right, Okay, it just looks a little different.
And yes, as a Clemson fan, yeah, it looks a
little different when you're losing to South Carolina, Like, okay, yeah,
I see something that is actually different. They're coming into
our stadium as a Clemson fan and winning. Yeah, And
(21:45):
I watched Leonora Sellers where he could not be stopped
and especially in certain situations, I mean, it was crazy.
And so there is something about that it factor and
how Shane Beemer is handling himself in so many different ways,
and how the program is being viewed again differently from
a national perspective, and that's what gives me belief that
(22:05):
it is on the right track there for South Carolina.
And as Billy talked about, I know there were a
lot of people that might have felt that Shane Biemer
wasn't the guy, because I know there were a lot
of people that felt Dabo Sweeney was not the guy
to take over, and I was one of those guys,
and so I was definitely proven wrong. And I remember saying,
all right, Dabo, you go win an ACC championship, and
(22:27):
then I'm all in.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
And he did that and then more.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
And I think Shane Biemer can do the same thing.
There's no doubt that he could eventually go win an
SEC championship. But maybe that's not all that you have
to do now with the expansion of the college football playoff,
just get to the playoffs exactly. Anything could happen. And then,
my goodness, the holy Grail National championship. Can you imagine
(22:51):
Columbia if they win a national championship in football. I'm
not saying this year, and who knows, maybe they do
it this year, right, but can you.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Imagine that city?
Speaker 2 (23:03):
People might not work in Columbia for six months, right,
because they would be celebrating for that long. And I
know my daughter, who's going to be a senior come
fall at South Carolina, Oh my gosh, she.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Would give you anything.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Get on it, yes, exactly, Colin Beamer, Let's get Kate
a Championship down in there in Columbia. On the football side,
all right, we'll continue this Monday edition of the Richmond
Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets because we do have
NFL coming up July thirty. First, it's the Hall of
Fame game, but is it really football?
Speaker 3 (23:37):

Also, so you don't want the iHeartRadio app, you can
still listen in other forms, right, but you should get it.
You should get it because it's easy peasy. Yes, it's
all there.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
It's so easy. And the preset buttons.
Speaker 6 (25:12):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
It's like you're walking around with a little radio in
your hand. Your phone is so smart and it's a
mini computer in itself. And I'm surprised though, mister Falco,
that right now we still do not have a winner
on the trivia question.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
It's still going.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
We've had several people texting in but with wrong answers.
And again this is for a twenty five dollars gift
card to autobil car wash here in the Upstate. And
the trivia question is it's a little bit of a stumper.
There's no doubt, and that's why I'm surprised that people
haven't been able to search and find the answer. As
of yet, three players in NBA history have been able
(25:54):
to win the MVP in the regular season, the Defensive
Player of the Year and also Finals MVP. So and
typically if you're the Finals MVP, you have won the championship.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
Right.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
There's been one guy that's been able to be Finals
MVP and didn't win, and that was Jerry West. He
did that nineteen sixty nine with the Lakers as they
lost to the Celtics. There but the three players in
the NBA, there's I'm naming two of them, Michael Jordan,
hannakeem Elajuan name the third player in NBA history to
(26:31):
win the MVP, the Defensive Player of the Year and
the Finals MVP. We've had all types of answers, from
Jokic to Shack to Draymond Gremon.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Yes, so we've had.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
We've had a wide variety of answers, but not the
correct answer. And the first person to text in eight
six four triple seven ninety five ninety three. Again, that
number is eight six four triple seven ninety five ninety three.
With that correct answer, you'll be able to win a
twenty five dollars gift card to Autobil car Wash. And again,
(27:06):
three players in the NBA that have won regular season
MVP Defensive Player of the Year and the finals MVP
keem Olajuan, Michael Jordan or two of them, there's one
other player that's been able to do it. Name that
player and text in eight six y four triple seven
ninety five ninety three. Now we also Mark actually texted
in and it was and it looked like maybe he
(27:29):
was trying to call also through the text line. So
we do utilize the text line as a phone when
our landline has been down right, okay, So that's why
we're not able to answer via the text line through
the phone. So I know Mark is asking a question. Basically,
I think it's okay if I take the Panthers training
camp on eighty five. Question Mark, Now, the way I'm
(27:52):
reading that is, is the training camp going to be
on Take I eighty five to the training camp. Is
that I'd sure Mark you can call in at eight
six four two four zero five four eight zero or
Texter response there, because I'm not certain, because we do
know with Carolina Panthers, they're starting July twenty first, and yes,
(28:12):
coming up fast, and it's at Bank of America Stadium
from all the information that I've got.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Because they're not in.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Partnership with Wafford anymore, I'm not holding the training camp there.
But if there's somebody that does know all of the
details about the Panthers' training camp, stick around, stay right
here until four pm, and mister John ellis the game on.
He will be able to give you all of the
details about Panthers training camp, So make sure you stay
(28:43):
tuned right here on one O four nine Fox Sports
Upstate at the top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
All right, we've had.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
More textures texting in and even Kareem abdul Jabbar. That's
an incorrect answer, but we do looks like we have
a winner, mister Falco, we do. I do see a
correct answer, and I think we do have a winner.
As Texter seven six one zero texted in and the
(29:10):
answer is Yannis go onto Greek freak. So well done
and it, Hunter, is that to be? Yeah, Hunter Bruce,
well done, mister Hunter Bruce being able to get the
correct answer with Giannis Again, there's been three players in
the NBA that have been able to win a regular
season MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year and a
(29:33):
Finals MVP, Michael Jordan, a keem Olajuan and Jannis Onto Kimpom.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
And that is the Greek Freak.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
And we do have a winner there, twenty five dollars
gift card for Autobil car wash. So fantastic job, and
we appreciate everybody being able to participate as well. We'll
have another one tomorrow and maybe I won't go as hard.
I won't dive so deep into the NBA. Maybe I'll
die NFL, yes exactly, or college football. Maybe that's a
(30:04):
better opportunity because I think everybody has football on their
mind right now. We've made it past July fourth, and
people want to understand what's going to happen with their
favorite team coming up in this college football and NFL season.
But you can join the conversation as always eight six
four two four zero five four eight zero And let's
(30:24):
head out to the Ingles hot line right now. The
Richmond Weaver Show. Who's this?
Speaker 6 (30:29):
This is Mark and Ball of Spring.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Yes, sir, Mark, how are you my friend? Thanks for
calling in.
Speaker 6 (30:35):
Yeah, I just I see that sign all the time
right there when I'm coming, like from Greenville or whatever.
And I know it's to tell people to go to Wofford,
but I mean that's a couple of years old now
it's trying to be funny.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
I gotcha.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
See, that's the challenge with text messages, Mark, is that
you can't read the context right right.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
I know that. I fully agree. I mean, people will
never talk on the phone anymore, and I do. I
love talking on the phone, sat Mark. My thing about
the game Cocks and are they going to have a
good season? Probably, But when you go back and look,
I'm fifty seven. When you go back and look even
the last twenty years, say who wins Alabama, Georgia. I'm
(31:19):
not trying to put Clempson there, but Clempson Michigan, Ohio State. Yeah.
People want to say Texas, that has been a long time.
People want to say Notre Dame. We all know how
long that was because Tony Wrice went was there and
he's my age and it's the same. And when they say,
you can get into playoffs and anybody. Anything could happen,
(31:39):
but it doesn't like Boise State boom gone, Arizona State
boom gone. Right, it could, it could, but it never.
It never does. Name the last surprise national champion?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Okay, So would you put Clemson as a surprise national
champion when they beat Alabama and two thousand and.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
I was not? Yeah, to beat Alabama? I mean, I
give them, I'm a Clemson fan, went to clem and
played football closes. Yes, but you have to tip your
hat to Alabama. You have to at least since when
Saban was there, and then when Bear was there, and
probably the gene Stalins went. I'm not sure, but over
(32:24):
the last hower long Nick Saban was there, you can't
say nothing about him. I don't care what they did,
who they killed, how much they paid, it doesn't matter.
The ws are on the board. And and now whatever
they did is all legal. Think that poor guy, is it?
Reggie book Housman? And now he wouldn't. They wouldn't even
(32:47):
slam an eye, No.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Not even because it would all be legal. All right,
So Mark, here's here's my I guess question statement, And
based on your question, who was the last Suprise team
to win a national championship. And I think that's a
little bit hard to answer because this is not like
college basketball or a scenario where you have so many
(33:12):
teams that could actually play for a national championship. Because remember,
for so long, it was just the voters basically voted
who was going to be a national champion. And then
we got to the BCS and it was a computer,
but it was relegated to only two teams that would
actually quote unquote play for a national championship, and then
at least we went to four. And that's why I'm
(33:34):
excited about twelve teams and hopefully getting to an expansion
of sixteen teams, because I do think at that point
you will be able to see some other teams break through.
I'm not going to say we're going to see like
a Rice or a Vandy or anybody like that, but
maybe we will have some of the teams that, you know,
(33:55):
like a South Carolina has a better opportunity to get
to the college a playoff national championship game.
Speaker 6 (34:02):
If you if you're a game Cock fan, okay, I
know maybe you're gonna say get in the playoffs, Okay,
but do you want to be served up to. And
I'm just assuming Alabama's gonna get theirselfs straight now, or
Georgia or Ohio State is going to stay straight.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Now.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
Do you want to get served up to Ohio State
or Alabama and get just bludgeoned or do you want
to play I don't know, Illinois, I don't know, somebody
in some bowl game and maybe you have a win. No,
I mean it's easy. I know you got a chance
in the playoffs, that's right, But like the nine and
(34:38):
seventeen that's gonna get in the playoffs in the NFC
South this year? You think they're going anywhere?
Speaker 5 (34:45):
I hear what you say.
Speaker 6 (34:47):
And even in basketball, and I don't follow basketball all
that much, Clempson's got me a little interested over the
last couple of years because they've never actually been good before,
maybe when Horace Grant was there, and that goes back
to when I was there, but and now all them
guys are gone. But who wins? I mean, you can
name who's going to win the national championship the basketball
this year probably in ten tries due Kansas Carolina. You know,
(35:12):
it's the same people, even if they got seventy however
many they got in there now And I'm not being negative.
I'm just saying, look back, I'd say the last surprise
first team would have been in Colorado when they shared
it with Michigan maybe in the eighties.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Or.
Speaker 6 (35:32):
Didn't Utah, No, not Utah, Brigham Young, didn't they share
it with somebody?
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Yeah, well Utah in two thousand and eight they were
actually undefeated and they claim a national championship, but Florida
won that year as the BCS champion. But yeah, you
can go all the way back to when BYU did
win a national championship, but that was in the early eighties.
It is about nineteen eighty four, I think, or eighty
(35:59):
five somewhere around in and.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
Didn't Georgia Tech Sharon national.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Champions That was with Colorado, Yes, Colorado and Georgia Tago, Yes,
nineteen ninety.
Speaker 6 (36:09):
And you don't think either one of those teams has
any chance this year. Nobody does, not to win the national.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
Championship, probably not to win a national championship. No, And
obviously there's a lot of I.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
Think Carolina's gonna have a good year, yes, do I
think in the end they're gonna be able to beat
Ohio State and Alabama and Georgia in the playoffs. I
don't think Clinton can either. I don't think probably anybody
can beat Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama and you know
what I'm saying. So, yeah, getting in tone, But it's
like the NFC South champion anyone in the Super Bowl.
(36:44):
I actually think they should stop that. I think the
NFC South champion and I'm picking on the NFC South,
but for many years it's been this way. They should
get in. They shouldn't get a buying host.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Yeah, I don't think there's there's definitely been disc ushs
around the in NFL playoffs and restructuring and having it
where you don't get that advantage just because you win
your division, especially what you have.
Speaker 6 (37:12):
Dealt it last year. I mean they had to go
on the road in the first round and they were
what fourteen to two?
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Yeah, that's like that.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Yeah, when you have those type of challenges, Yeah, that
can definitely be tough.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Mark. We do appreciate the call, my friend.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
I got to hit this break, but you call any time, Yes, sir,
thank you, Mark.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
Yeah, And I would have to say before we hit
the break because I know I'm running out of time here,
but just real quick and we talk more about this.
But I promise you, or at least from my perspective,
I don't care. You know, if it is getting into
the playoffs and you have to go up against a juggernaut,
just get to the playoffs. That is much more important
(37:54):
than especially in today's college football, than going to a
bowl game and going up against a team that, yeah,
you got a better shot at winning. No, get to
the playoff because you can't be scared of play in
anybody these days. You got to go and play because
you just don't know what might happen. All right, We'll
continue this Monday edition of the Richmond Weaver Show presented
by Ingles Markets right after this.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Live from the Ingles.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Studios downtown Greenville, right here on North Main Street. This
is the Monday edition of the Richmond Weaver Show, presented
by our good friends at Ingles Markets. And make sure
you get out to your local Ingles here in the
Upstate or wherever you might be shopping.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
And I know you're gonna have to replenish from.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
All of the July fourth festivities and all of the
cookouts that you might have participated in. And you just
simply need groceries and you need gas, so Ingles has
everything that you want. And don't forget about the pharmacy.
Ingles has a pharmacy that make sure that they stock
everything and they do look for some of the best
prices around. And that's the one thing that I have
(38:57):
found out with pharmacies. I think that it would be
the same price everywhere around as far as like medication,
but that's not how it works. They really they do
get to charge different prices. Yes, so just remember that
also that some pharmacies will charge different prices, and Ingles
follow suit not only with what they try to do
(39:18):
with their groceries giving you the lowest price possible, but
also they're in the pharmacy as well because they are
a big part of each and every community that they
are in, and they want to make sure that we
are all able to reciprocate and have that opportunity of
saving money. And once you get your Angles Advantage card,
you can save money inside the store and even at
the gas pump as well. Ingles low prices. Love the savings.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
All right, let's take a look at some of the
latest headlines. It's only one game, and that's.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
To take care of Ben hitting the latest headlines. It's
the daily rundown.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
All right, how about this in college basketball? And I
know this is college basketball, but it all centered around
nil and the house settlement and the revenue sharing that's
going to be going on. And I'm actually have reached
out to Larry Williams of Tiger Illustrated. He just recently
did an interview with Brad Burnell, Clemson basketball head coach
(40:17):
and coach Brownell is talking about that the basketball program
there is getting eleven percent of the school's revenue share
and really talking about that. Some of the competitors in
the ACC especially, they're getting twenty percent of the revenue share,
so it could be double. So with Clemson getting say
(40:38):
two million dollars, there's other programs that could be getting
four million dollars. And so yes, that's where you're going
to have some of these disparities that occur and how
will that play out long term? And that's why I
think eventually we're going to have to get to some
type of system where we have negotiations, we have caps,
(41:01):
we have opportunities where there's collective bargaining. All of those
things very similar to what we see on the professional
side of things. So I do think that's coming. But
I do want to try to get Larry Williams on
to talk a little bit more about his conversation with
Brad Burnell. And also yes, I'm going to try to
have coach Brownell on as well to talk about it.
(41:23):
And I'm also working on Lamont Paris to be able
to join the conversation. Yeah, just from a basketball standpoint, hey,
And of course we know it's football. I get that,
So don't worry. We've got some things in the works
on the football side as well. Speaking of still basketball, though,
Chris Paul has announced that he will be retiring after
the twenty twenty five NBA season, And he has played
(41:45):
twenty one years in the NBA. Former Wake Forest standout
and again one of those just good guys of the
NBA that's had a really good career, but not the
championship type of career. And I know that's a tough
pill to swallow for him, but he has had a
fantastic career, so he's got one more Swan song in him.
(42:06):
And also how about this, Oklahoma announced that athletic director
Joe Cassigleoni will hold a news conference tomorrow to announce
his retirement.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
It's one of the longest.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
Running athletic director stints in major Division one college athletics.
So congratulations to him. Now, if you're Brent Vinnables the
head coach on the football side.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
You better win.
Speaker 6 (42:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Well, yes, And I'm pulling for Brent Vinnables obviously because
his connection to Clemson and everything that he did as
defensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
But now when you have a new regime, come in.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
A new athletic director, things could be a little bit
different since Joe was the one who hired him. And
how about this Jim Thorpe. If you ever heard about
his story, you might want to watch this, or if
you haven't, you should on the History Channel. There's a
new documentary that's going to be coming out and it
(43:04):
actually comes out tonight on the History Channel, and it's
called Jim Thorpe, Lit by Lightning, and it talks about
his perseverance.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Power and pride.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
And this guy was the biggest athlete in the world
for a while and would go on to win gold
in the Olympics, but then have his gold medal stripped
because he played a semi pro baseball game. Yeah, that's
how ridiculous things are. And speaking of also documentaries about
(43:35):
this tomorrow on Netflix. Quarterback Season number two premieres on Netflix,
and that's where they follow various quarterbacks throughout the season,
and this year it's Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, and Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (43:50):
Interesting.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
Yes, we'll be viewed on Quarterback Season two on Netflix
starting tomorrow. All right, that's some of the latest headlines,
and we will wrap up this edition of The Richmond
Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets right after this kicking
off this first full week of July. Here on this
Monday edition of The Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets,
(44:12):
right here on one of four nine Fox Sports Upstate. Remember,
July thirty first is the Hall of Fame game NFL
as we've got the Chargers and the Lions going. Yes,
July thirty first, we'll talk about it tomorrow. We ran
out of time today. Is it really football?
Speaker 3 (44:30):
Good question?
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Hey, at least it's some semblance, right football, So we
do know it gets us in the mood heading into August,
that's for certain.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
But it's July seventh, So let's walk back in a
little bit of history.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
What happened on this day. Let's go back in history
to the moments you might have forgotten and the ones
you'll never forget. It's otd on this day, all right?
Speaker 2 (44:57):
How about this nineteen twelve we were just talking about him,
Jim Thorpe. Oh, yeah, he would win his pentathlon gold
medal at the Stockholm Olympics on this date in nineteen twelve,
and then a year later he would have it stripped
because he played semi pro baseball.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
Yeah, ridiculously.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
No, that would get reinstated in nineteen eighty two, but
it took way too long. Nineteen twenty eight, Yes, we
can say this was a fantastic day because something crazy happened.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
Slice bread was invented. This was the first time it
was ever sold.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
So the greatest forward step we've ever seen in history,
or at least baking industry. Right, Yes, slice bread nineteen
twenty eight, no doubt, all right.
Speaker 3 (45:33):
And nineteen ninety we.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
Know Wimbledon's going on right now, but Martina Navratolova would
win her ninth Wimbledon singles championship. Nine that's a lot. Yes,
she was dominant back in the day and in twenty thirteen,
Andy Murray would win the men's Wimbledon singles final and
become the first Englishman to do that in seventy seven years.
(46:00):
You would think, hey, it started in England, played in
England every year. You should have somebody that would be
a little bit have a better opportunity of winning. But
he was the first one to do it in seventy
seven years.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
All right.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
That is OTD And that is this Monday edition of
The Richmond Weaver Show, presented by Ingles Markets.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
We'll talk to you tomorrow.
