Richmond Weavers Show on one oh four nine Fox Sports
Upstate presented by Ingles Low Prices, love the Savings Now
for richest take on sports.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Here's Richmond Weaver ready to roll this Monday.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Right here on one O four nine Fox Sports Upstate
as you are listening to the.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Richmond Weaver Show presented by our good friends at Ingles Markets.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
And a beautiful day here in the Upstate and hopefully
you are enjoying sunshine wherever you might be after a
sun filled weekend Easter weekend. I had a great opportunity
to have my son in town and hopefully and hopefully
all of you had family and friends that you were
able to get together with. Also, my daughter came up
from South Carolina down there in Columbia and made an
(00:55):
appearance here on Easter weekend. So had a fantastic opportunity there.
And now we are in the midst of NFL Draft week. Yes,
there's all types of things going on obviously with the
NFL Draft, So we're going to start taking a look
at a lot of things with the NFL Draft and
even looking at quarterback situation and is it good to
(01:18):
be the first quarterback taken or should you actually be
taking a little bit later, And how much value is
on that number one overall pick. And we've talked about
it several times, and I know John ellis with game
on which you can listen to right here at one
in four nine Fox Sports Upstate from four to six
pm each weekday, does a great job breaking down a
(01:41):
lot of the draft and even from a standpoint of
the hypothetical drafts and where players might fit best, but
also just the number one overall pick itself and how
valuable that is to a team when there's not a
true head and shoulders above everybody else type of player.
(02:02):
And obviously when we're talking about that, historically we're talking
about a quarterback. But if you go back and look
in some of the drafts throughout the past twenty five,
even past forty years, it's not always about taking a
quarterback number one, as much as we think it is,
knowing that it is such a valuable position. There's plenty
(02:25):
of times where a quarterback could have been taken at
the number one pick but was not. And a player
positional type of player, not a wide receiver, not necessarily
a running back, although we have seen that again way
back in the day, but more of the foundational type
of players, and I'm talking offensive line, defensive line, edge rushers,
(02:47):
those type of individuals. And how many times we've talked
about it that if you can have to have success,
I should say, in the NFL and in football in general,
you need a quarterback. Obviously we've talked about that. And
then also you have to have a line that protects
(03:08):
your quarterback. And also do you have rushers. Do you
have the defensive front that can get after the opposing quarterback?
So if you can have those three things, then you
have a scenario where you might have success. But it
takes even more than that, and that's why I think
there's something to be said about maybe you don't want
(03:28):
that number one overall pick. So we're going to take
a look at that throughout the week as the NFL
Draft gets ready to roll on a Thursday, and of
all places, lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin. And I think
it's absolutely one of the best things that the NFL
has done in terms of taking the draft out on
(03:51):
the road, the road show and making sure that there's
an opportunity that more NFL fans are able to interact
in this event, and it has spread like wildfire with
record crowds.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
We saw it in Detroit and.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
I would imagine we're going to see something very similar
on Thursday in Green Bay. But which players will be
there waiting in the green room to hear their name called.
There's reports that some of the big ones, some of
the big names that you would think would be there,
are not going to be there. And then there's some
others that might leave you scratching your head wondering why
(04:28):
would you want to put yourself in that position, knowing
that there's so much focus on those players that are there.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Now.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
I get it, it's one of the big events for
these players, the dream getting drafted in the NFL, so rightfully,
so you would want to be there, but there's also
something now about today's society and just the aspect of
how much attention And we can go back to years ago,
(04:56):
even with Aaron Rodgers as he was there and just
the cameras continuing to be on him, and even more
so now because it's not just about the TV cameras
that are there, it's also about the social media and
the impromptu cameras that are capturing a lot of the
content as well. So we'll talk about that throughout the
(05:17):
week as we get ready NFL Draft, and this is
part of the beginning of the season of hope for
a lot of NFL teams. And I'll give you some
of my thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys as they are
almost behind the eight ball, that they have to have
a good draft to try to set themselves up for
the future, because I think some of the moves that
they've already made or haven't made in free agency is
(05:42):
going to really put them in a bad position down
the road based on some of the contracts that they
have signed. But we will talk about that, and obviously
you can join the conversation as we are solow today.
Mister Trey Falco is still out, but we do expect
him back later this week. You can join the conversation.
Let us know your thoughts. What are you most looking
(06:03):
forward to in the NFL Draft? Eight six four two
four zero five four eight zero. Again, that number is
eight six four two four zero five four eight zero.
But the thing that I wanted to talk about first
is the NBA playoffs. Now I know each Wednesday we
will talk heavily with NBA action with our guest Jason Temp,
(06:27):
host of Hoops Tonight, does a great job of breaking
all of the NBA action down and we've had the
opportunity of have him for the past several weeks, and
we'll have him each and every Wednesday joining us all
the way through the finals of the NBA and we
get to crown a champion. But the NBA Playoffs are
here and it's a different type of basketball that we're
(06:51):
starting to see. And now we know, we've talked about
it several times that this is an opportunity where veterans
can shine because they know how to play, especially in
this type of environment because the refs they call the
games different and as much as we want consistency, and
that's true, the refs, the officials in the NBA, they
(07:14):
do understand at the end of the day, especially come
playoff time, it's about the stars. Let them play and
let them be physical and don't be the attention grabbers.
Now that's easier said than done, but we got to
see some of that in action this past weekend, especially
(07:36):
when you see a team like Golden State Steph Curry
and what they were able to do to the Houston Rockets,
holding the Houston to eighty five points.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
And now this is a young Houston team that's.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Very athletic, and they can get up and down the court.
They've got guys who are so athletic it's very hard
to defend and transition. But Golden State did a great
job of being able to limit transition baskets get into
a half court type of offense. And again understanding the
(08:12):
veteran guys that they have. When you put Steph Curry
and you put Jimmy Butler together and then obviously throw
in Draymond Green, and don't forget they have a hell
of a coach with Steve Kerr who has coached Steph
and Draymond for eleven years, so he knows exactly what
they should be doing, what they should expect, and vice versa.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
And that's one of the things that we saw.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Veterans in playoffs can make a huge difference even against
a team that's on paper much more athletic. But it's
hard to score in the NBA in the playoffs, and
I think Houston saw that first hand in this game
against Golden State. And Steph Curry just continues to be
Steph Curry and showcasing that we need to make sure
(08:59):
we're taking making the opportunity to truly appreciate what Steph
Curry has meant to the NBA and obviously meant to
the Golden State Warriors. And don't sleep on Steph Curry
thirty one points five to three pointers. But that's the
thing about Steph Curry. He can do it in so
many different ways. He doesn't have to just shoot the
(09:21):
three point shot. He can still penetrate, he can still
get to the rim, and he's got that little floater.
He can get to the paint right there, right there
at the free throw line and knock it down. And
if you watch him in pregame, he goes through a
shooting routine, so it becomes muscle memory for him in
(09:41):
the games. And I think that's one of the biggest
things that young shooters, young players go watch Steph Curry
as he warm ups. He's very intentional about his warm ups.
It's not just going out there and shooting trying to
get loose. It's intentional about what type of shots he's
gone one to work on, and it's the mechanics. We
(10:04):
talk about it in golf mechanics. Mechanics, mechanics. It's the
same way with shooting, and Steph Curry is the epitome
of a pro in how he's able to do that.
But again, Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler combined for fifty
six points as they get to victory ninety five to
eighty five over the number two seed there in the West.
(10:24):
And then you had the Timberwolves and the Lakers one
seventeen to ninety five, and Aunt Edwards goes off twenty
two points, nine assists, eight rebounds as the t Wolves
hit twenty one to three pointers in that game, which
is a playoff franchise record. And I think one of
the key things here is that JJ Reddick first time
(10:47):
coaching in the NBA playoffs, so you do have to
have a little adjustment there. So again it's different type
of basketball. Luca and Lebron as much success as we
have seen in a short period of time with them together,
again it's a little bit different the pressure the playoffs
(11:08):
and how important it is for the Lakers to come
out and get an early edge against the Timberwolves, but
they weren't able to do that, and I think that
was the biggest thing that you have to take away
from this game is that Ant Edwards and the Tea
Wolves they came out and said no, no, no, no.
We know your Lebron, we know your Luca, but we're
(11:30):
going to come out swinging. We're not going to lay
over right here, lay down, however you want to describe it.
This was a team that came out with energy, they
came out with focus. And also I felt that aunt
Edwards did a really good job of making sure that
he was able to utilize his passing ability, which I
do think is underrated because it's one thing he gets
(11:52):
frustrated at times and then tries to do too much,
and that's indicative of a young player. But I thought
Aunt Edwards did a really good job and the coaching
staff did a really good job of making sure to
focus on not trying to force the issue, let it
come to you, but still be aggressive. And I think
that's what the Tea Wolves were able to do in
(12:13):
this big victory on the road against the Lakers. And
so now how would the Lakers respond. I do believe
this is going to be important here. I do think
the Lakers will ultimately win this series because at the
end of the day, they have better stars, but you
have to be careful, especially in this first round, you
have to be careful Nuggets and the Clippers going into overtime.
(12:37):
The Joker continues to showcase his dominance, his brilliance, even
though he did miss two free throws down the stretch
there that would have had an opportunity to seal the
game in regulation. But it was Russell Westbrook with a
clutch three pointer there and some of the defense from
us Russell Westbrook at the end of that game that
was able to get the victory there for the Nuggets
(12:59):
over the Clippers.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Now, I do still think that the Clippers are a
better team overall, but that was a huge win for Denver,
especially with the upheaval that they have, firing their coach,
all of the things that happened at the end of
the season there. So that was a big victory there
for the Clippers. Cavaliers take down the Heat no significant
(13:23):
issues here.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
We thought this was going to happen.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Now, I did see that Ty Jerome, how he played
showcase that.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Again, it is about a team.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
I know Donovan Mitchell had thirty points, but they're in
the fourth quarter, Ty Jerome just kind of took over
with twenty He ended up the game with twenty seven points.
And I think that's a big plus for the Cavaliers
is that they can get that type of help. The
Celtics take down the Magic one o three to eighty six,
and Jason Tatum got to be questioning how healthy can
(13:55):
he be? He went down a little bit there in
that game. Now he ended up going back in there.
But again the Celtics that they do not They have
a very balanced team, I should say that, but this
is something to be watching for Jason Tatum in his
health seems to be okay, but watch out. And we
did see Derek White with thirty points and seven three pointers.
(14:16):
Then one of the games that I actually got to
watch quite a bit of was the Knicks and Pistons,
and New York uses a twenty one zero run there
in the fourth quarter to take down the Pistons one,
twenty three to one to twelve. And this is a
game that the Pistons, they were in control this entire game.
Kate Cunningham the youngsters there with Detroit, but this is
(14:38):
their first playoff experience and there at the beginning of
the fourth quarter, New York holds them to a five
second count as they're inbounding the ball as the fourth
quarter is just getting started.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
So this is to begin the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
And there's a five second count, and then the next
offensive possession they just inexplicitly don't even try to run
an offense and have a shot clock violation. So then
New York has this momentum and it leads to this
twenty one to zero run, and that was the end
of the game there for the Detroit Pistons as Jalen
(15:16):
Brunton scores thirty four points and then oh the Bucks
just got nothing out of anybody except Jannis.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
That was it.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
But as great as Yiannis is, he's not the guy
that's going to be able to do everything for the Bucks.
They have to have some help, as Indiana would go
on to shoot fifty two percent from the field and
beat the Bucks one seventeen to ninety eight. But the
one that really interests me Oklahoma City making history with
(15:51):
a fifty one point blowout against the Grizzlies, one thirty
one to eighty. And I did watch a fair amount
of this, and this was not an SGA game, No
Jalen Williams led, but twenty points j Dubb there for OKC.
But this is just an all out team effort for OKC.
(16:16):
And I would have to say, you've got to be
careful though, because as easy as I want to look
at some of these matchups and automatically come up with
our conclusion, we just have to make observations. And how
many times have we talked about don't get caught up
too early making a conclusion instead of an observation. And
(16:38):
so especially in the NBA with the playoffs seven game series,
there's no way you can make a conclusion so quickly.
Now we can have some observations that make us.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Really lean towards a conclusion.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
And I think we have to make this observation with
OKC is that this series.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Is going to be over pretty quickly.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Now. I know Jahn Morant is a hell of a
talent and all of that do away with what he
does on the court, off court issues, whatever, But OKC
is just too well balanced of a team. And again,
fifty one point win. You don't see that too often,
not in the NBA playoffs. It's the fifth largest margin
(17:29):
of victory in NBA postseason history. And the largest in Memphis,
excuse me, in OKC history, and also the largest game
one margin ever in the NBA. It's only seven point
shy of the all time playoff record, which is fifty
eight point margin of victory set by the two thousand
and nine Nuggets and the nineteen fifty six Lakers. So
(17:53):
this isn't just a statement as a win. It's a
warning to the entire league. And I'm questioning, is this
the most dominant game one performance we've ever seen? Based
on this is not a team that we historically would
(18:13):
look at and say OKAC is going to match up
as one of the best NBA teams in.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
All of NBA history.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Now, the story still needs to be written, don't get
me wrong, I do understand that. So we'll see how
they run through the rest of these playoffs. But that
was a dominant performance. And that's why, as much as
you have to be careful about making a conclusion too early,
there is something to be said about. The observation that
I saw is that Okac this matchup against Memphis, I
(18:45):
think this one's over. Now, Memphis might still still a
game in this series, because we do have something where
there might be a little bit of a letdown. I
don't think that OKAC is going to win by fifty
points again, but this is going to be very difficult
for Memphis to be able to handle that type of loss.
And especially knowing that Sga one of the guys that's
(19:09):
going to be fighting for the NBA MVP this season,
I think he's going to be very difficult for Memphis
to stay with OKC. All right, when we come back,
we'll start taking a look at some of the NFL
draft prospects and especially who should go number one, Should
it be a quarterback or should it be somebody different,
(19:30):
And also break down a little bit more of the
NBA playoffs. Much more of The Richmond Weaver Show presented
by Ingles Markets right after this live from the Ingles
(20:12):
Studio in downtown Greenville, right here on North Main Street.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
This is the Monday edition of the Richmond.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Weaver Show, presented by our good friends at Ingles Markets.
And we appreciate you listening, however you might be listening,
however you might be investing your time.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Again, greatly appreciated.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
And it doesn't matter if you're listening through the radio
or maybe even through the iHeartRadio app obviously, we do
appreciate you investing that time. And if you don't have
the iHeartRadio app, make sure you download that through the
app Store or on Google Play. And once you do that,
you can search one O four nine Fox Sports find
(20:52):
the station very easily there and then also peer down
your preset buttons and then you don't even have to
worry about it.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
It's just right there, easy pas.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
That's why we love it, and we also love it
because it is free. The iHeartRadio app, make sure you
download that through the.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
App Store or on Google Play.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
And as always, you can join the conversation eight six
four two four zero five four eight zero. Again that
number is eight six four two four zero five four
eight zero talking NBA NBA playoffs. Yes, we've got more
action tonight. Can the Nicks and the Pistons? How will
that play out? Can the Pistons be able to regain
(21:32):
a little bit? There will be interesting to see. And then, obviously,
as we have talked about, the big one on Thursday,
the NFL Draft live from lambeau Field there in Green Bay, Wisconsin,
and this is what's going to be interesting. A lot
of talk about cam Ward being the number one overall
pick and is that a good thing or a bad thing.
(21:55):
We're going to break that down in a little bit
more detail, but let's head out to the Ingles hotline
right now, the Richmond Weavers show.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
Who's this rich How are you doing today, kind sir?
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Doing fantastic? Billy? How about you? My friend?
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Very good, very good. I want to get into a
couple of football topics and maybe the NBA. Well, it's
to the NBA first. I watched a couple of games
this weekend, you know, segments here there with an entire
games because I was watching the UFL. I must have
been only one, but you were okay, Well, you know what,
(22:30):
I've seen a couple of your buddies on the announcing
the game, so I know you know both of them. Yes,
And I bet you that if you asked him about
the UFL, he would probably tell you that he feels
like that those players are probably uh not NFL caliber,
but they're not college caliber. Eia, there's stuff above that.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
So yes, and he has told me, Billy, real quick.
And I'm sorry to interrupt, but it's a great point
that you have brought up. Because I talked with Eric
quite a bit and he's actually told me he loves it.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
He thinks it's exciting.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
The football is really good, it's competitive fundamentally their sound. Now,
obviously it's not the NFL, but to your point, it
is a step above college.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
I think you could take the champion of that league
and they would probably win the national championship in college,
and maybe it wouldn't be that close, I don't think,
because those players are better than people think that they are.
If you've got to watch it to understand it. But anyway,
let's transition off of that basketball. I don't know. It
just looks different than me. And listen, I'm gonna go
ahead and say this. I know you're a big stuff fan.
(23:35):
I'm just one of those people.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
There's people in basketball. There's not too many that I love,
but there's people I can't stand, and he's just one
of them. And I know a couple of people who
know him personally. They was one guy just passed away
that I was really good friends with, and he was
in Charlotte and he was up there. He worked at
the Charlotte collefe in for a while and he knew
his father and them two boys when they were there,
and he said that is one to be nicest families.
(23:58):
And so those two boys were so not I expect
then well behave everything. And I don't doubt any of that.
I just I don't know. There's just something about him
that just rubs me the wrong way. But I will
say this, and you know, Paul Sade is Spade, he
and I know you agree with this because I can
just tell he is the best pure shooter that I
have ever seen in my life, hands down.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
Billy, It's not even close.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
I mean, this guy is the epitome of a pure
basketball shooter. And I love watching him because I can
become mesmerized by how he gets open and so it's
one thing to see him how he shoots, and how
he is even out of space, out of rhythm, and
still somehow can square shoulders and be able to make
(24:44):
the shot. It is a pure poetry in motion. And
I can tell you firsthand he is an absolutely gem
of an individual. I've spent about twenty minutes with him
sitting down for an interview, and he was as gracious
as he could be.
Speaker 4 (25:01):
I think a lot of us got to do with
him winning all the time and then being in Golden State,
and listen, I consider myself a conservative. I'm not crazy,
but they're very liberal in that organization. And that's the
reason why I think it's got a lot to do
with it. And you know, when they win and they're
not on your team, you just the start to dislike them.
So but if it was somewhere else, I'm sure that
I would like it.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
How many times have we talked about it, Billy, that
when you have a dynasty or you have a player
of greatness, there is a contingency that are tired of
that team or that player, regardless of what that player
is or what that team is. It's just how it
goes in terms of dynasties and great players that they
(25:42):
can be polarizing.
Speaker 4 (25:45):
Yeah, well, you know what's funny is after the game.
I know you was probably asleep. Your powers are a
little earlier than mine. But Thinja Shroud was there, and
it's amazing to me how young both of them look.
You know, they said this Stelf just turned thirty seven,
and he looks young for thirty seven to me be
in middle school. I mean, it was crazy because they
(26:05):
were talking to each other after the game, and it
was crazy to me how young CJ. Strout looked. Anyway,
let's transition to football now. I don't have any hopes. Listen,
I'm going to say this. I'm sure this is where
you're going to I don't know what's going on in
free agency, don't care. I don't care who Dallas drafts.
I just don't have any hope for him. I just
until I hate to say this, I don't want to
(26:25):
be morbid, but until Jerry Jones fast is I just
don't think that they're going to get you know, to
the word me and you want them to be, which
is NFC Championship for better. So you know, I'm not
sure how they're going to get I was hoping that
there was an outside chance that they would get Jimpy,
because I do think that would improve their roster drastically.
The problem is because they won those games, those meaningless
(26:45):
games at the end of the year, I don't think
they're going to get him.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yeah, and I would agree with you.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
I'm not certain that that he will fall that far.
That's the problem now that people are starting to really
recognize in terms of what Genti can be, and that's
a tough position for the Cowboys knowing that that is
a area that they need to fill that void, and
it's just going to be frustrating to once again see
(27:13):
that they had the opportunity of free agency Billy as
you described, and just decided not to do anything status
quo and we'll somehow figure it out. That's just not
how you do it in the NFL. I'm sorry, you
just can't do it that way.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Well, you know, they brought in Nixon to be a backup.
I don't watch that movie either. They had been very
successful bringing in UFL players. I don't know why they
just didn't get one of those guys in nonrestricted free agencies,
you know, to just be a backup, because at this point,
I'm not sure they're going to be that competitive. And
if that's the case, you're stoning the season away for
a year or two and you're going to start building
(27:49):
through the draft, and why not go to that we're
out instead of giving up drought choices anyway, you know,
we'll never know why Jerry Jones was thinking.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
So no, we won't test the problem.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Right right, Well, I'm not sure he knows. Now, anyway,
to the South Carolina real quickly, you know, I think
there's going to be a lot of their guys that's
going to be very successful in NFL that's going to
get drafted this year. They did very well in all
of their combines. You know, they had to win in Colombia,
and then they quite a few of them went to
(28:21):
various combines. I know they had to won in Indianapolis,
and I think they had you know, the All Star
Games or whatever, and they all played well in those
things or did well. So I think they're going to
do well. I would like to see Dallas get a
couple of those players, but we'll see. And you know,
the spring game, I know you and John was at
the spring game for at Clinton, I guess two weeks ago.
(28:41):
I didn't get to see it, obviously, I've seen some
video of it online. I don't think you can read
too much into that. I've transitioned my line of thinking
of that. You know, when I was younger, I thought
they really meant something. Now I don't think it's just
anything just to have a little hype for until you
get to the college football season. But I do think
South Carolina is going to be better than people think
(29:02):
that they're going to be. Again, I don't know. I'm
not saying they're going to win the national championship, but
I think they're going to be competitive for a playoff
spot this year. That's just my personal opinion, But I
just I've got a sneaky feeling. You know, Shane Beemer
has recruited well, and I think it's starting to show.
And it sort of reminds me of Dabbo when you
(29:22):
guys turn the corner and you got to be you know,
you're in playoff contention. I guess, well, I guess the
playoffs that well, hither he had started in fourteen. You
are sort of building for a playoff, you know, contender,
and you finally got a across the hump, I guess
in fifteen or sixteen. This sort of reminds me of that. Now, Listen,
it's not the same because Silas South Carolina is in
(29:44):
a different league. Obviously in that past of getting into
the playoffs, it's harder because of that. But I do
think that they are building to that. I keep saying that,
but I'm not just saying that just to hear myself talk.
I believe that.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Yeah, I think there's something to it.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
Billy, and I, of course you can look and try
to go apples to apples, and it's probably more of
an apples to orangest type of concept in terms of
evaluating South Carolina and Clemson and when Clemson started.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Getting over the hump.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
But the one thing that I do think could equalize
things out in terms of yes, at the time, the
ACC different than the SEC relative to what the SEC.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Is right now.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
So I do understand that from a scheduling perspective. But
now South Carolina you have the ability with an expanded playoffs,
so you do have that, and it's only going to
expand more. We do know that what that number is
going to be. I think it's going to be sixteen,
and I think that's where we'll settle out. But obviously
that remains to be seen. But I do think that
(30:48):
right now, Shane Beemer, and I've said it from day
one with Shane Biemer, just give him time. He will
build something into a program. That might not mean in
the next three years you're gonna win a national championship,
but hell, you don't know.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Maybe it is.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
I'm just saying that there is something that you just
give a team hope, belief, and if you can get
that one win that you need get over that one hump,
and that's what happened with Clemson. They were able to
have success, win the ACC and then get into the
National Championship game where they lost to Alabama, but they
(31:29):
proved to themselves more importantly that they compete with that
they could compete with the team like Alabama, and that's
ultimately why they were able to go on and win
the national championship the following year.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
Yeah, well, this I agree with everything you just got
through saying, yes, the pass is different, but you're right,
the pass has changed also for everyone because the playoffs
is expanded. Now you don't have to be one of four,
you can be one of twelve, fourteen, sixteen, what ever
it's going to be. You know, at the end of
this year, I don't know. I guess twelve, but I
know they was talking about and expanding it to fourteen
(32:01):
even this year. But even if not, you can see
we're headed towards sixteen. And to me, the similarities with
Dabo and with Beamer are you know, they're all strucking honestly.
And the other thing is, I'm not sure that Clemson
would have won that first national championship with Davo had
it not been for the quarterback, but you had the
quarterback at the right time, at the right place. And
(32:23):
you know, I think you can probably say the same
thing with South Carolina.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Guess who you've got.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
You've got Lenora Sellers And there's already discussion that the
state of South Carolina might be the epicenter of quarterback
play in college football in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
When you've got Cade club Nick at Clemson and then
you've got Lenora Sellers at South Carolina.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
So I think this is great for the state.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
And that's why I'm a big proponent of saying, Hey,
even as a Clemson fan, South Carolina.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
I want you to be good.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
I want there to be a lot of hype, a
lot of exposure to the universe versity of South Carolina.
One because my daughter will be a senior there next year.
And then also it just builds even more exposure for
the entire state and builds hype around that matchup at
the end.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Of the season.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Well, let's just both go undefeated and we'll see you
in November.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
Exactly why not? What's wrong with that?
Speaker 4 (33:19):
And then there's a possibility we could see each other
in the playoff. Again, who knows if that were to happen.
So I agree, and you're right about both quarterbacks. They're
both probably top five hide and candidates right now.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
And the last thing, and I'll hang up and listen,
is coder Woods looks awful dog one good. I'm just
gonna go ahead and say it. He looks slow dog
one good. It's not even funer funny.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
Anyway, I appreciate it, buddy, take care of have a
good day.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
Yes, sir, Billy, we do appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
And anybody else that wants to join the conversation, you
know you can very easily.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Eight six four two four zero five four eight zero.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
Again, that number is eight six four two four zero
five four eight zero. We do have to hit this break,
but I do love that there's already signs of hope,
starting to believe what this season might look like in
college football for twenty twenty five and obviously for NFL
teams getting ready for the big draft here coming up
(34:14):
on Thursday. And will cam Ward be the number one
overall pick. We'll talk about that and much more as
we continue this Monday edition of The Richmond Weaver Show
presented by Ingles Markets right after this.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
In a way, we.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
Need to change from the sperm out scene another time,
another town, another everything.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
But it's always back to you, to some.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Of out in the night on the poll Ram Ray
the sad though. It's always back to you.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
All right, golf fans, and even if you're not a
die hard, you want to be in the know for
this one. The BMW Charity Pro Am presented by td
Sinex is coming back to the Upstate the week of
June second through the eighth. And it's just not any
type of tournament. It's a corn Faery Tour event. Yes,
(35:29):
I understand that, but there is a serious twist to it.
This is where amateurs and celebrities team up with corn
Fairy Tour pros in a three day betterball competition. So
you know it's going to be competitive, but it's also
a blast.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
And the setup, how about this two beautiful.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
Courses here in the Upstate, Thorn Blade Club and the
Carolina Country Club there in Spartanburg, And trust me, you're
going to see some impressive golf but also maybe a
few surprise swings from some of the familiar in the
world of sports and entertainment.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Now, I know it's a lot of fun. The crowd
is big.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
How about forty five thousand fans strong. Yeah, that's fantastic.
And best of all, it's all for a good call.
So every swing helps raise money for local charities right
here in our community. So whether you're coming to watch,
you want to volunteer, or maybe even both, just go
to Bmwcharitygolf dot com for all of the details. Again,
(36:29):
that's BMW Charitygolf dot com for all of the details.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
You do not want to miss it.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
I'm telling you is a fantastic event and it's coming
up fast. I know we're looking here at April twenty first,
but June will be here before you know it. As
there's a lot of schools getting ready to be let
out in what four and a half weeks, five weeks or.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
So yeah, parents are starting to figure out or started
to look at the calendar saying, uh oh, we got
to come up with something for the summer. And at
least this is one thing that you can do during
the week, and that's the BMW Charity pro Am presented
by TDCINX. The week of June sewod through the eighth
there at Thorn Blake Club and also the Carolina Country Club,
(37:11):
and also they're going to have a lot of events
in downtown Greenville and even some in Spartanburg as well,
so you don't want to miss that and keep it
tuned right here to one of four nine Fox Sports
Upstate because we'll be doing some extra golf coverage each Thursday,
part of the Inside the Rope segment driven by our
(37:31):
good friends at BMW Charity pro Am presented by TDCINX.
And make sure you listen on Thursdays here at three
point fifteen pm because we will go inside the Ropes
with some great golf coverage. All right, We do obviously
have the NFL Draft coming up on Thursday, and so
one of the things that I wanted to talk about
(37:53):
was just from the perspective of again the quarterback being selected.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Overall number one, and is.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
That necessarily a good thing or how has it shaped
out over the past several years, And we can even
go back way back in history and there's so much
more attention to the quarterback position because there's also now
so much more attention to the NFL Draft. Yes, it
was always an opportunity to have some hope, starting to
(38:27):
believe for the upcoming season, that your team might be
making some big moves, a rebirth of your team by
getting a generational type of player, whatever it might be.
And I know there's a lot of fans. It was
never sexy. It was never seemed to be a home run.
If you drafted an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman,
(38:49):
you wanted one of those big names.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
You wanted that quarterback.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
But that's not how it always plays out, especially as
the number one pick, and especially with the quarterback. And
that's why we've talked about it. These general managers, these coaches,
these player personnel, I mean, their job is obviously trying
to come up with some type of algorithm, some type
(39:15):
of scientific way to evaluate these players and their potential.
And how can that extrapolate from obviously high school to
college and then college more importantly to the NFL. And
I do think it's something that I don't know if
we're ever going to be able to find that algorithm
(39:37):
because it's just so difficult and it's much more of
an art than a science. And that's why we have
head coaches losing their jobs. That's why we have general managers,
losing their jobs. And that's why we have the unknowns
that play a factor into the NFL draft. And when
I say unknowns, I'm talking about players that you didn't
(39:58):
think would be a to make that leap from college
to the NFL. And then we also have those scenarios
where there's players that don't make that leap where you
thought it was going to be automatic.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
That they would make that leap.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
And just listen to this stat in the last five drafts,
only fifty percent of the first round quarterbacks have panned
out as starters.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Only fifty percent of the first round quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
That is astonishing when you think about it, and that's
why there's something to be said about do you have
to have a quarterback in the first round? Can you
find value at a quarterback somewhere else? In today's NFL draft,
there's only going to be a few guys that, if
(40:55):
they're elite level quarterbacks, that are going to slip out
of the first round because of fear of missing out
the FOMO. You do not want to miss out on
a quarterback, even though we have seen history show that
those quarterbacks don't always have to be taken in the
first round. And I think there's something to be said
about that, as much as we're looking right now at
(41:16):
cam Ward as the number one overall pick, because it
does seem that through all reports that he seems to
be the guy that can fit into that number one
overall pick.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
But that's where I'm wondering.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Are we trying to fit cam Ward into the number
one pick just because he's a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
And maybe he's the best.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Quarterback out of this crop of quarterbacks in this draft,
or is he truly deserving of a number one overall pick.
Is there another player at another position that should be
the number one overall pick? Because if you take a
quarterback number one over you know you're going to have
(42:02):
to play that quarterback. The fans are going to demand it,
and even the pick these days seems to demand that that.
You don't want to take a number one overall pick
and then sit that player. So I'm just curious, though
I don't know if cam Ward is worthy of the
number one overall pick. I think he's getting put into
(42:25):
that position because he is a quarterback, and of all reports,
he seems to be the highest rated quarterback out of
the quarterback class that we have right now, and That's
where you can get into trouble is when you're trying
to fit a player into a certain type of position
rather than that's where the market should have that player.
(42:49):
So it will be interesting to see what Tennessee does.
But all reports right now is that cam Ward is
going number one to Tennessee. All right, we will wrap
up this Monday edition other Richmond Weaver Show presented by
Ingles Markets right after this.
Speaker 5 (43:20):
Darling, you've got to let me know shoold I stay
or shoot I go? If you say that you are mine,
I'll be here until the end of time. So you've
got to let me know, shoot I stay or shoot
(43:43):
I Go.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
The Monday edition, another Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets,
continues right here on one O four nine Fox Sports Upstate,
and we appreciate you listening here on this Monday Again,
mister Trey Falco, who's typically behind the board and behind
the mic, is out today, but he should be back
later this week, so we look forward to mister Falco
(44:07):
making a reappearance and how appropriate for this song.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Speaker 3 (44:14):
As the transfer portal is all chaotic right now, both
basketball and in football and we didn't get to talk
about it, but Campringle, South Carolina offensive lineman there, he
has entered the transfer portal there on the college football side.
And we also have seen the news that just broke
about thirty minutes ago that Clemson basketball Jaden Zachary and
(44:38):
Ian Shefflin have.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
Both entered the transfer portal.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
And I know there's a lot of questions, Wait a second,
it transfer portal with Jade Zachary and Ian Shefflin. They've
used up their eligibility, yes, but there is ongoing litigation
right now that there could be a scenario where eligibility
is granted back to some of these players, allowing them
five years of eligibility. So it's a preemptive move to
(45:04):
go ahead and be in the transfer portal just in
case they do have eligibility, and it will be interesting
to see. But I have felt that if given the opportunity,
Jamee Zachary and Ian Jefflin would come back to Clemson.
Although remember there's only so many spots, as these teams
have had to feel because of roster and making sure
(45:28):
before the portal closes. So it is right now somewhat
of the wild wild West, and I get it. I know,
college basketball right now has a lot of things that
needs to be fixed, but the product on the court
is still absolutely fantastic. So we'll see how all of
that plays out. But it is April the twenty first,
So let's walk back in a little bit of history.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
What happened on this day.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
Let's go back in history to the moments you might
have forgotten and the ones you'll never forget.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
It's OTD on this day, all right? How about this?
Speaker 3 (46:02):
In nineteen oh four, Ty Cobb was make his professional
debut in the South Atlantic League. There in augusta. Oh yeah,
one of the greatest hitters of all time. And in
nineteen fifty one the NBA Finals as Bob Davies would
hit two free throws that give the Rochester Royals a
(46:23):
seventy nine to seventy five victory over the New York
Knicks in Game seven of the NBA Finals.
Speaker 2 (46:29):
There, and speaking of.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
NFL Draft what we were talking about earlier, how about
this in nineteen ninety one, the Dallas Cowboys, they would
select Russell Maryland with the number one overall pick. Yes,
a defensive tackle, so it's not always about the quarterback there.
And also in nineteen ninety six, the Chicago Bulls would
wrap up the most successful regular season in NBA history
(46:54):
at the time with seventy two victories, as Michael Jordan
would also record is eighth NBA scoring title, breaking Wilt
Chamberlin's record of seven. So yes, he is the goat
that is OTD here on this Monday, and that is
this Monday edition of The Richmond Weaver Show, presented by
(47:15):
Ingles Markets.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
Have a great afternoon. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
