But we also want to let you know that coming
up in the next segment, it's our new segment, our
golf segment that we have each week, Inside the Ropes
driven by BMW Charity pro Am presented by TD Senex
and excited to.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Recap the amazing event that.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
We saw this past weekend at Augusta National with the Masters,
and we are going to talk to somebody who was
there boots on the ground, so to speak, boots on
the greens there at Augusta National as Front Office Sports
newsletter writer for the golf segment, David Rumsey will be
(02:37):
able to join us and talk about his experience there,
what it was like seeing Rory finally getting the monkey
off of his back, obviously getting the green jacket, and
then also the career Grand Slam and what that meant.
And then also David was able to partake in something
very exclusive and I can't wait to have him share
(03:00):
all of those details about what he got to do
on Monday there at Augustin National.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
So again, David.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Rumsey of Front Office Sports will be joining us in
the next segment, And we do have to make sure
to acknowledge if you haven't heard, some of the news
going on right now at Florida State University down there
in Tallahassee. Active shooting is going on right now. The
reports are initially several people injured. Now I'm seeing some
(03:28):
reports that five people have been killed there at the
campus of Florida State University. And obviously our thoughts and
prayers are there for everybody and Florida State has canceled
all home athletic events through Sunday again after the on
campus shooting, according to ABC News.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
So obviously you.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Can follow the headlines, follow the stories, and obviously make
sure you're deciphering through all of the correct information. It
does change every every few minutes as far as what
the actual reports are. So again, thowtsome prayers though for
everybody down there at Florida State and the Tallahassee campus.
Now a little bit of an awkward transition, obviously when
(04:12):
you have sobery news like that. But I did want
to mention real quick, just something that we talked about
with the Tennessee situation and quarterback Nico Emliava and his
decision to no longer be part of the Tennessee volunteer
program under Josh Hypel and enter the transfer portal. And
(04:33):
he said, she said, type of situation now, because we
don't know exactly. Was it for money, was it from
a situation that they weren't happy with the offensive system
under Josh Hipel And was Nico going to be able
to be protected? And the reports are now and this
is according to Colin Cowherd as of yesterday, that Nico
(04:56):
is going to UCLA, And so it made me think, oh,
according to the reports, if Nico is going to UCLA,
but according to this so called close ally family friend
of Nico that has been involved in a lot of
these conversations and negotiations with the University of Tennessee, that
(05:17):
this wasn't about money. This was something about making sure
that the best team was assembled for Nico to be
quarterback of and that they had these conversations all the
way back in December and made it known then. Well,
my point is is that, so if you had those
initial conversations in December and you knew the portal was
(05:40):
closed back then the first window for college football, then
why did you wait all the way until April before
the portal opened? Because couldn't Tennessee still have an opportunity
as far as going and getting transfers in the ten
day window that the portal is open right now until
April twenty fourth. I don't understand why we're seeing this
(06:03):
in a different light when you have that opportunity to
already know the situation and that Tennessee could improve it
by going into the portal, but you didn't wait for that,
And so I'm very skeptical as far as some of
the information that we're receiving, not to say there might
(06:25):
have been some of those discussions about, hey, we need
a better offensive line, we need better wide receivers, we
need obviously overall better offense for our son Nico, and
Nico to say, hey, yes, I'm comfortable here at Tennessee,
but having the hand in those type of movements within
(06:48):
the Tennessee program, I just don't know how realistic that is.
Those are so many things that you can't control, and
what we've heard from so many coaches and obviously Dabo
Sweeney control the controllables.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
You take control of what you can control.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
And then outside of that, it is what it is,
because that's just a part of life. And so hearing
the reports that he's going to go to UCLA, well,
now all of a sudden, he's going to be at
a program where does he know how good that offensive
line is, Does he have a wide receiving core that's
better than Tennessee, And he has a brand new offensive coordinator,
(07:27):
a different head coach, and so now he's going to
take direction and call offense for somebody brand new. It
just doesn't add up. That it was all about the
offense inefficiencies at Tennessee. I do believe there was discussions
about money, and ultimately money was the driving force in here,
(07:49):
because that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense
when you're looking at it from a big picture standpoint.
But we will see how all of that plays out.
The other thing that I wanted to talk about the
announcement Lee Corso has decided to retire from ESPN's College
Game Day upcoming in August, ending his career with the show.
(08:14):
When the show first began in nineteen eighty seven, so
nearly forty years, Lee Corso has been a part of this.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Show that college football fans have loved.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Now, I know, over the past few years, maybe it
has turned into a different direction and it's much more
of a entertainment than obviously talking x's and o's and
footballs and breaking games down all of those type of things.
But it was still something that obviously even college campuses
look forward to hosting ESPN's College Game Day, And so
(08:51):
I had this thought though, looking at where it stands
right now, obviously with him retiring and his last day
is going to be the opening day of this college
football season twenty twenty five, August thirtieth, and so here
are three big games on that date. Where will ESPN
(09:12):
College Game Day go. You've got Alabama at Florida State,
LSU at Clemson, and then you've got Texas at Ohio State.
And I know a lot of people here in this area,
it makes so much sense that college Game Day you
(09:35):
would come to Clemson, LSU and Clemson, Tigers versus Tigers,
Death Valley versus Death Valley. You could easily pump it
up that this is the battle for the true supremacy
of Death Valley, who can actually be called Death Valley.
(09:56):
All types of things that you can come up with
and reference to LSU and Clemson.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
And we know.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Game Day they have enjoyed coming to Clemson. They have
openly talked about it that they love the opportunity coming
to Clemson. They're on Bowman Field, the setup, everybody rolls
out the red carpet. Not to say other schools don't
do the same thing, but they have openly talked about
Clemson is a good venue for ESPN College Game Day.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Alabama at Florida State.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
I know this is Alabama and Florida State, but that's
just looking at it from the names. You got to
look at it where these programs are right now. This
is not the Florida state of Bobby Bowden. This is
not even the Florida state of Jimbo Fisher when they
won a national championship. And obviously this is not in
Alabama when you're talking Nick Saban. Kellen de Boorr is
(10:53):
in a different stratosphere right now at least. And it's
very difficult obviously to follow up one of the greatest,
if not the greatest college football coach that we've ever seen.
But LSU Clemson, Oh yeah, Brian Kelly, Dabo Sweeney, Clemson.
Could they be on their pathway back to being in
(11:14):
the national spotlight with cade Klubnik returning LSU, with their
quarterback Neusemeyer returning.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
And again it's Brian Kelly.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Remember seeing him in Death Valley when he was the
head coach at Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
So there's a lot of intrigue there.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
And as much as I would love leek Orso to
end his career in Clemson, I just don't see it
happening Texas at Ohio State. And I think we've seen
from history so many times that college game day will
look at Ohio satan.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
This is not about kirkirve Street.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
I mean, maybe there is a little bit to it,
but if you look at of the sixty nine teams
that d Corso has donned the headgear of during his
time there on college game Day, no one has been
chosen more than the Buckeyes because they've done more Buckeye games.
(12:14):
Oregon twenty one selections, Florida twenty two selections, LSU twenty
five selections, Alabama thirty eight, and Ohio State sitting there
forty five out of the forty five selections there. So
think about that.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
ESPN.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
They love them some Ohio State and especially on college
game Day, and we saw it last year as they
went there multiple times for Ohio State games. So as
much as I want to have Lee Corso there in Clemson,
there on his final day August thirtieth, with the ESPN's
College Game Day and a fitting farewell to Lee Corso
(12:57):
because he did it better than anybody else we have
seen in that role, even through the decline, even through
the stroke after two thousand and nine, he was somebody
that was at least entertaining with the pencils and not
so fast. My friend, and I think LSU Clemson. Not
so fast, my friend, I think it's going to be
Texas at Ohio State will be his last appearance because
(13:21):
his very first headgear that he donned nineteen ninety five
was Ohio State Buckeyes. All right, When we come back
here on this Thursday edition of The Richmond Weaver Show
presented by Ingles.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Markets, it is time for Inside.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
The Ropes driven by BMW Charity pro Am presented by
td Senx, our golf segment, and we'll be joined by
Front Office Sports writer for Golf mister David Rumsey to
talk about his experience at the Masters and much more.
(14:09):
The Thursday edition of the Richmond Weavers Show presented by
Ingles Markets continues right here on one oh four nine
Fox Sports Upstate to and again programming.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Note, mister Trey Falco not in today.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
But he should be back on Monday, and also we
will be off tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
But again we'll be back on Monday.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Obviously catch up on a lot of the NBA action
with the NBA Playoffs that will be starting, so make
sure you come back from Monday as we'll break all
of that down. But it's our weekly segment now our
new golf segment that we get to start here right
here on the Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets
are Inside the Ropes.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
From the fairways to the headlights. It's inside the Ropes.
You're all access pass to golf's biggest needs and best moment.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
All right inside the Ropes driven by BMW Charity pro
Am presented by td sin X. And we obviously have
to recap the crazy events and the excitement that we
saw at Augustin National with the Masters, and what better
way to do that with an insider, and that is
David Rumsey of Front Office Sports, a golf newsletter writer.
(15:26):
And David, we can't thank you enough for joining us
here on Inside the Ropes.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
We greatly appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
And I know you're probably still figuring out what in
the world did we see there with Rory McElroy winning
his green jacket.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Yeah, thanks for having me, and you're exactly right. It's
been quite a come down from a really exciting tournament
and great finish on Sunday night. Yeah, you can't ask
for better feeder than that, whether you're a fan of
McElroy or just golf in general.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Yeah, and David what was it like actually getting to
witness that moment at a national not only Rory winning
the Masters, but completing the Grand Slam, the career Grand
Slam right there. And how do you think this victory
reshapes Rory's legacy?
Speaker 4 (16:12):
Yeah, it was awesome to be on site. You know,
when he came into the interview room for his post
round press conference, you know, I think he got the
traditional you know, round of applause for the winner, but
you know, you could tell, just like he had on
the green when he thought to his knees, it was
just kind of a sense of relief. And you know,
(16:34):
he opened his press conference by saying, before he took
any questions, he says, well, what are we going to
talk about next year? Because you know, he has been
coming to the Masters for fourteen years now and they're saying,
you know, are you going to be able to win it?
Ever since that breakdown on the back nine way back
in twenty eleven when he was a twenty one year old.
(16:54):
And yeah, I think as far as his legacy, look
at the names that he's with, right there's only hive
other people that have completed the Grand Slam, and they
all have huge businesses off the course as well. If
you're talking about tiger Woods, Jack Nicholas, Gary Player, et cetera.
You know, golf course design, apparel companies, sometimes their own
(17:14):
club deals, things like that. So I think McElroy is
going to be going to keep competing on the course,
but he's going to be an even bigger name and
brand off the course as well.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Yeah, I would imagine. So again I made the analogy.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
This is one of those things like a quarterback winning
the Super Bowl, you put yourself in a different stratosphere
at that point, and from a marketing standpoint, you're at
a different level. As David Rumsey of Front Office Sports
golf newsletter writer is joining us to recap some of
the crazy excitement there to Gusta National and also talk
(17:48):
about some of the other things going on in golf.
And one thing that I do want to go back
to the David is just the final round roller coaster
that we saw, I mean, Sunday was wild, and I
thought it was one of the most engaging final rounds
that we've seen in a long time where you didn't
have Tiger Woods there from Rory's double bogies, justin Rose,
(18:10):
his charge and Dschambau's collapsed there. But from your vantage point,
what do you think was the turning point in that
final round and how did the crowds energy reflect that?
Speaker 4 (18:23):
Yeah, well, I think we might have to say, well,
were the turning points right, because it looked, you know,
like after number one. You know, I went, I watched
a little bit of golf on the course. I was
at watch number one in person. I was there at
the green. I saw that melt down for double bogie
and you could just kind of feel you had some
Bryceon fans in there yelling the all square, here we go.
(18:45):
And then you know, I watched quite a bit from
the press center as well, so you can kind of
see a little bit more evolve when you're watching on
TV instead of just trying to follow with the masses
in the crowds. And I think after that first nine
it looked like Kroy was in controlling Birdie ten. You know,
I know, I was kind of prepping my story that
(19:05):
I ultimately did get to write about Maclroy completing the
Grand Slam and what that means for him on and
off the course, and I know others were kind of
doing the same. Other golf reporters there. But certainly it
looks many times like Okay might have to be writing
a story about Justin Rose winning, might be having to
write a story about lud big Aberg coming back to win.
(19:26):
So obviously thirteen was a disaster for Rory when he
put that ledge in rays Creek or the tributary there
by the green. But really I think it came down
to seventeen being able to bounce back with that birdie
to get the lead. Because I don't know about you,
but I think if he wasn't able to birdie seventeen,
he might have still voguied eighteen and not even been
(19:49):
in that playoff. So as great as that shot was
on fifteen, I think getting that birdie in seventeen was
maybe even more important.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
No question.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
And how was the crowd reacting in just again from
your vantage point when he did miss that putt on
eighteen in regulation?
Speaker 4 (20:04):
Yeah, you know, it really seemed like everybody who just
felt that same nervous energy that he had. It's not
that anybody was necessarily rooting against Justin Rose, you know,
engulfed to you know, the customers to not really root
against people. If it's not like the Ryder Cup or something,
But it was clear everybody wanted to see Rory get
(20:25):
it done, and it just felt like there's that distance,
that five six foot putt, you know, after his struggles
putting those short ones at Pinehurst last year at the
US Open, kind of like here we here we go
again and I don't And I think those people probably
I thought he would make it.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
I did.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
I was like, okay, you can make that putt when
the Masters win the Grand Slam. And he didn't do it.
But it just showed you how nervous he was, because
you know, when he came back on the playoff hole,
he hit the same drive again and then knocked it
to three feet, which was a much easier plot for him.
So it truly was just straight nerves. I think on
that approach and regulation, there was nothing difficult about.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
That, no question.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
And I do remember him even talking about hit the
nerves that he had going up to the tea box
and number one, and so I can only imagine what
it must have been there at eighteen in regulation having
to make that putt, and.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I was saying to my wife, Oh, he's making this.
This is a different Rory he's going to make it,
and he missed it. And then I obviously had the
luxury of a much smaller put for me to say, oh,
he's got to make this one there in the playoff,
and he obviously was able to do that. And David Rumsey,
a front office sports golf newsletter writer, is joining us,
(21:38):
and so David with that. Also, you've got Rory's win,
You've got Scheffler just how consistent he is, and then
you've got Dschambeau making noise at these majors. But obviously
there's the split between live and the PGA Tour. Where
do you see professional golf right now? And how healthy
(21:58):
is the sport?
Speaker 4 (22:01):
So I think when we do have moments like this
at the Majors, at the Masters most recently, where you
have the best players from the PGA Tour and live
battling against each other, it shows everybody likes it. There
was twelve million people watched an average of the final
round of the Masters on CBS. That was up big
from last year. I think it was the best most
(22:21):
watched round since twenty eighteen. So it shows you that
the product, when it's really good, can draw in a
lot of fans. And maybe even new fans. But at
the same time, the Masters ends, and here we go
where you know, there's a pg Tour event in Hill
in the Head this week. You know Live Live is off,
and you know they'll they'll do their own thing until
the PGA Championships. So John rom spoke as the Masters
(22:44):
and he said, you know, a merger reunion, it's not
happening anytime soon. I don't think it's going to happen
this year. Maybe we get some co sanctioned events or
something in twenty twenty six. But it really seems like
the two sides are maybe even getting farther apart than
they once were.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
Yeah, and that's what I was going to ask you, David,
Why is it that they're not I guess it does
seem from that vantage point that is getting even further
away where we were hoping by now we've been almost
getting closer. And especially when you see how the crowds
(23:22):
react when you have the best golfers.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
In the world in one venue, why.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
Would you not do everything that you could to unify
both the PGA Tour and Live Golf.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
But is it true?
Speaker 1 (23:36):
I mean, it's getting more of a distance between these
two organizations.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Yeah, I think there's two main issues that we have
to deal with here. One is the PIF the Saudi
piffs that Mantley backs live golf. They want live golf
to keep going on even after they come to a
deal with the PGA Tour. That much is clear, and
I think the PGA Tour wants live golf to kind
of quietly go away once they have a deal. So
(24:01):
that's one issue they're trying to work out what happens
with live Does it remain in existence in any form,
whether it's special events or a fall series or something,
or does it just go away? Like I said, I
think the PGA Tour would prefer for it to just
kind of go away, whereas the PITH would like to
have it keep going. Another issue is the way this
deal ultimately is going to come together, is the PESS
(24:24):
is going to invest a certain number of billions of
dollars into the for profit entity called PGA Tour Enterprises.
They've already taken an investment from American investors called Strategic
Sports Group. Anyway, its long roundabout way of saying the
PITH is maybe not valuing the pg Tour as high
as the PGA Tour is, So that's another sticking point
(24:47):
potentially in addition to Live Golf, whether it's stays, whether
it goes, and then hey, how much are we investing
from the PITH side and what kind of stakes does
that get us in this new company. I think there's
some negotiation going on there on those two things.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Yeah, and just even then from the perspective of obviously
live in PGA Tour, how is the PGA Tour how
are they viewing the TGL Because I know front office
sports you guys, you do a great job digging into
some of the dollars and cents and behind the scenes
business aspects. So how how do how does the PGA
(25:23):
Tour view the TGL.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
Yeah, I think they love it. The PGA Tour is
an equity holder in TGL, and it's parent company Tomorrow Sports.
You know, they let their players play in it, so
it's you know, it's sanctioned, it, it's all good. PGA
Tour is a big supporter of TGL and they've kind
of set it up so that it's on Monday and
Tuesday nights, which makes it easy for guys to play
in tournaments on the weekend and then play in TGL
(25:47):
and then go play again later the week if they
need to, depending on their schedule.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
So they like it. I think they would.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
Support more players playing in it. I think they would
support the expansion of it, whether that's the teams, another venue,
a longer season, all of those things. I think the
PGA Tour thinks that, you know, alternative golf like TGL
is good for getting viewers, you know, new fans, new players,
(26:13):
all of those things. You know. One idea could even
be if we ever do get this reunion with Lift Golf,
you know, bring some of those guys. Maybe not necessarily
a whole live team, but who wouldn't want to see
Bryson Deshambeau play in a TGL match, you know, mashing
his driver three hundred and eighty yards in the simulator.
You know, he's he's a theatrical guy. He does YouTube golf.
(26:34):
He's built for that kind of stage. So I think
that's another positive that could come from any kind of
merger we do in Fitchley.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
Get Yeah, d Chambeau, he might try to be like
Shack and break when those simulators like Shaq would break
a backboard in basketball, right, absolutely, we might try to
do that that would be entertaining. He is David Rumsey,
Front Office Sports golf newsletter writer, joining us here on
Inside the Ropes driven by BM Charity PRORAM presented by
(27:01):
TD sin X right here on this Thursday edition of
the Richmond Weavers Show. And so, David, you talked about
the TGL and one of the things that I think
some fans have liked is the shot clock.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Basically there in the TGL.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Pace of play, you know, it's moving fast. I think
fans are really enjoying that. And the PGA might be
taking some advice from Major League Baseball wanting to increase
their pace of play, and I know you and your
colleagues did a nice write up about that. So where
do we stand right now in terms of how the
(27:35):
PGA Tour is looking for better opportunities to increase the
pace of play and including allowing the tour professionals right
now for the next several weeks to use rangefinders.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
Yeah, so if you turn on the RBC Heritage this
weekend through Sunday, Don and Helenhead players and their caddies
are allowed to use since measuring devices. We call them
range finders. You know, most golfers will have one of
those in their bag. You know, you roll up to
your ball, bloom, you shoot at one hundred and fifty
yards out and you you know, get your nine iron
out or whatever. And you know, obviously on the PGA
(28:11):
Tour typically you know, as the Masters, for example, there's
no rangefinders allowed. You have to walk off your yardages.
You need your caddy to know that, numbers get their books,
and that's certainly the traditional way of doing things for
professional and most tournament golf, if you will. But yeah,
the PGA Tour is really wanting to speed things up.
(28:32):
When they have these huge one hundred and fifty person
field events and they're having to go off you know,
threesomes in each group and they're going off one t
and tend, things just get really slow. And you know
sometimes early in the season there can be five plus
hour rounds, close to six hour rounds, and that's just
not good for the players, not good for the fans
(28:54):
on site or on TV. So yeah, they want to
speed things up. You know, you look at what baseball
has done the past couple of years with the pitch
clock and things like that to really get the game movement.
And I don't necessarily see rangefinders as the pitch clock
for baseball, but it's a step in the right direction.
The PGA Tour is at least say hey, let's try
something out. Maybe this can shave off a few minutes around.
(29:17):
We'll go from there. And then also on the corn
Ferry Tour, they're testing out penalizing, being more strict, penalizing
players for having a bad time, so giving them a
one strip of penalty if they're on the clock and
they have a bad time for how long it takes
them to play a shot. And I think that's something
that could get tested and rolled up into the PGA
(29:38):
too as well. And that's when really guys will really
start speeding up, in my opinion, because they don't want
to lose drugs, they don't want to lose points, they
don't want to lose money.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
No question, Especially when you're looking at the corn Faerry Tour.
You finish in the top twenty, you get your PGA
Tour card and can you imagine if you have a
penalty because of slow play and it puts you outside
of that top twenty. Yeah, somebody's going to to.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
Increase their pace of play. And then on the PGA Tour.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
Obviously, when you're talking about losing money, they're definitely going
to play a little bit faster. As we're wrapping up
with David Rumsey, Front Office Sports Golf newsletter writer, joining
us here, and I want you to share because you
talked a little bit about being there at Augustin National
for the Masters, seeing Rory get his green jacket, but
you had something very special. Share with our listeners what
(30:27):
you were able to do that Monday after the Masters
at Augusta National.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Yeah, Rich, it was awesome. I was one of the
twenty eight lucky media members to hit the Master's Media
lottery they do every year, and I got to play
Augusta National on Monday after the Masters just a few
days ago. I still kind of can't believe that it happened.
So processing that and everything, I'm actually working up a
piece that will run in one of this weekend's editions
(30:53):
of our newsletter. If everybody wants to subscribe to that
at Front Office Sports. It's free, by the way. So
I'm going to kind of detail how I played, kind
of the behind the scenes of the clubhouse and the
course and all that, but just an incredible experience that
they get to do for some lucky media members every year,
and I believe I can't enter that lottery again for
(31:14):
seven years now that I've won it, So I guess
I'll be taking a break from August National for a
few years.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Yes, well, you can relive the memories. And I do
have to ask you, though, knowing what Rory talked about
nerves going up to the first t how were your nerves?
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Oh, they were maybe even higher. You know, I didn't
I didn't keep it in bounds on number one on
the right trees, but I settled in after that. But yeah,
certainly the most nervous I've ever been over a golf ball,
that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Yeah. What surprised you the most about the course? Actually
playing it?
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Yeah? Yeah, So everybody always says, you know, it's hillier
than you think it is on TV, and I certainly
have gotten used to the hills, you know, been a
couple of times and kind of gotten used to that
from the difference of it is on TV. I think
what surprised me the most is just one being on
those greens. You see how unduliated they are, and you
(32:10):
know how difficult they are, but a couple of them
you just get up there and you're like, man, how
this tier, that tier, that slope and just you know,
they gave us caddies to use. I probably would have
shot ten trip tire if not for my caddy. You know,
I would look at a whole a plot and he
would say, okay, you're going to aim here and try
to use this speed. I'm like, really, that's it, and
(32:31):
you know, sure enough that was the one to diet
right by the whole and you know you just can't
you can't learn that without some local knowledge. So that
was That was really cool.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
No question, once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm glad you
got to take advantage of it and walk those hollowed
grounds there at Augusta National. And also can't thank you
enough for joining us here on Inside the Ropes driven
by BMW charity program presented by TD sin X.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
We greatly appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
David, and everybody make sure you go and subscribe to
the Front Office Sports newsletter.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
You will not be disappointed. David. Thank you so much, sir,
and I hope to have you back on real soon.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
Yeah, thanks for having me. Would love to do it again.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
Fantastic again, that is David Rumsey, Front Office, Sports golf
newsletter writer, and we will continue this Thursday edition of
the Richmond Weaver Show presented by Ingles Markets right after this.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
Live from the.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Ingles Studios in downtown Greenville, right here on North Main Street.
This is the Thursday edition other Richmond Weavers Show presented
by Ingles Markets, and you can join the conversation eight
six four two four zero five four eight zero. Again
that number is eight six four two four zero five
four eight zero. And let's head out to the Ingles
(34:14):
hotline right now. We've got Delvin on the line, and Delvin,
good afternoon to you, sir, Good after.
Speaker 5 (34:21):
Good afternoon to you. Rick. You were talking about lead
Course earlier. Yes, yeah, man, man, sad day man, you go.
You got Gary Diderson to retiring from CBS. You're gonna
have a whole year. But then but you know, lead
Course old last you know, game day will be this August.
And this said they're gonna quote from after this after
his last name during that last seven, I guess it's
(34:43):
gonna be Pat McAfee. That's why I thought. That's why
I say they brought Pat McAfee on. Anyway, take the
courtal place. So it's gonna be how they do place
them with with the heggeting up, probably have Pat mcwick
can do something crazy.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Well, if there's a guy that would want to do
something crazy, it definitely would be Pat McAfee. And my
question though, because it's a very good point, did you
bring up Delvin Obviously that's a mainstay for a college
game day is the head gear and the selection of
that him picking uh, which team is going to win
by their head gear. And sometimes though it's so hard
(35:15):
to replicate something like that, and I've seen it too
many times where they try too hard to do something
very similar and sometimes it was just so unique. You
can't replicate that, and you just have to have history,
have us remember it that way, and just move on
to do something completely different.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
Yeah, it probably it probably won't be the head gear,
but it probably sounds different than they'll do part with
Pat McAfee, and it could be at Rest after their
first game. You know, I want to get to take
what do you think of some of the portal pickles
that crist of gun and basketball this off season going
to when they like Nate David saying, and you think
so far will customer.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
I think Brad Burnell and his staff has done a
fantast stick job, especially getting front court players. Obviously you're
losing a lot of front court there now. Obviously backcourt
is still going to be a something focus right now.
But when you're able to get you know, a Carter
Welling and also a Nick Davidson and then bring in
(36:19):
a Jake Wallen, those are guys. I mean now you're
looking at over six' nine for all three of those,
guys and maybe not as physically on the defensive, side
but they can shoot and they can.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Defend and then you've GOT.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Rj godfrey coming back To clemson and the, reunion so to.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Speak SO i Think Brad.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Burnell has done a great, job AND i think right,
now Also, delvin that a lot of people might be
underestimating just how good a couple of the freshmen that
are going to be coming in for The Clemson, tigers
because when we look at, oh the roster is depleted
with the transfers, out we're not really talking about a
couple of the freshmen coming in when you've got Uh
(37:00):
foster coming.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
In so watch out for The.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
TIGERS i do think they're still going to be active
to get another backcourt type of, guy a guy that
can really when you need a, basket you go to that.
Guy and obviously we had that With Chase, hunter AND
i think that might be the one missing piece right
now For Brad. Burnell BUT i think he's done a fantastic.
Job and Even Evan, mayakawa WHICH i follow, consistently he
(37:26):
Had clemson as the twelfth best transfer portal acquisitions in
all of college. Basketball so that's pretty good right.
Speaker 5 (37:34):
There definitely. Good, YEAH i agree with WHAT i agree
with that they need another backcourt. Guy be interested to
see they get out there WITH i know ain't. Done
he probably gets my LIKE. GEORGEA wrt, DID i didn't
think the would get a couple of years, ago and
they got him From we'll know who's who are looking?
Speaker 2 (37:50):
At that's.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
Right, hey we still got a few more days left
in that transfer. Portal Uh and if you got any,
Eligibility Devin, Delvin.
Speaker 5 (38:01):
I'm, Good i'm good. Watching i'm good. Watching, YES i
don't play the course on game day THOUGH i can
do that NOW i can do.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
It oh, hey, well we got to get you involved IN.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Espn, Listen devin can put on that head gear And,
Devin we do appreciate you giving us a. Call, yes, sir,
anytime and anybody else if you want to join the conversation.
Again eight six four two four zero five four eight.
Zero again that number is eight six four two four
zero five four eight. Zero and let's take a look
at some of the latest. Headlines it's only one, game
(38:37):
and that's to take care Of ben.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Hitting the latest. Headlines it's the daily, rundown all.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
Right we do have to talk a LITTLE nba because
we did have some games last night and now we've
got a little bit clearer picture as far as the playing.
Tournament Miami, heat led By Tyler hero with thirty eight,
points gets the victory over The Chicago bulls one oh
nine two and The, mavericks oh, yes somehow they're staying.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Alive The, Ogs Anthony davis.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
And Clay thompson were able to get the big victory
there The mavericks over The kings one twenty to one oh.
Six so On friday night we will figure out who's
going to be the eighth seed in both The Eastern
conference and The Western. Conference there in The, east you've
got The heat versus The, hawks and that tip off
is at seven. Pm Trey, Young, okay you just got
(39:30):
to stay in the. Game do not get ejected for
some of your comedy that we saw in delaying the
game and taking the ball away from the refs or
at least not allowing the refs to grab the. Basketball
and he was ejected in that. Loss so to The.
Magic so, again the Heat hawks Play friday night and
(39:50):
the winner of that gets the eight seed and we'll
face The Cleveland cavaliers and then later in that night On,
friday The MAVs and The. Grizzly Will John morant be
one hundred? Percent it does look like that he will.
Be as the winner of The Grizzlies mavericks, game we'll
get the eight seed and we'll take on okc, oh.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Yes so get ready for. That all? Right how about?
Speaker 1 (40:14):
THIS i did See time put out their one hundred
most influential people and they did not Have Caitlin clark on.
There they had other sports personalities and they even had
some OTHER wnba, players but Not Caitlyn.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Clark And i'm still miffed.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
By what in the world Is time magazine doing what
we saw With Kitlyn, clark not only from, viewership from
THE ncaa tournament when she was there At. Iowa to
the viewership for the W nba record, highs we had
teams going to different venues so they could sell more
tickets For Caitlin clark. Games you can't tell me she's
(40:59):
not influential in her. World, oh, yes she. Is and
that is a big miss By Time. Magazine and speaking
of THE, nba, Also Damian lillard has been cleared for
his deep vein thrombosis and no longer is taking blood clot.
Medication he will still Miss game One saturday Against, indiana
(41:21):
but it does look like he's going to be a
return for this series and that is massive news for
The Milwaukee. Bucks and we talked To jason temp earlier
this week a host Of Hoops, tonight and he still
felt that The bucks would win the series just because Of.
Yannis but now when you Have dame, there oh, YEAH
i think you're going to be. Okay and how about
(41:41):
this For clemson, Football strengthened conditioning Coordinator Joey batson is
planning to retire after the twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Season he's been there for almost thirty.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
Years this is his twenty ninth season and so he's
been a big part Of clemson football and the strengthened conditioning.
Program obviously there and don't forget tomorrow seven. Thirty, Yes
Shane biemer and The gamecock football team will have their
spring Game friday.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Night, yes make sure you understand it's A friday.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Night they have a lot of, activities apparently planned, fireworks
all of. That so it'll be interesting to see and
how many Game cocks are excited about this type of
spring game and also obviously the upcoming season here in
twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
Five all, right we will wrap up This thursday.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
Edition Of The Richmond Weaver show presented By Ingles markets
right AFTER.
Speaker 6 (42:35):

Speaker 1 (43:06):

Speaker 3 (43:50):
History what happened on this. Day let's go back in
history to the moments you might have forgotten and the
ones you'll never.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
Forget it's.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
On this, day all.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
Right how about this nineteen forty seven little Major league?
Baseball we talked About Jackie robinson and his opportunity of
breaking the color barrier.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
And being the first to play In Major league.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
Baseball, well on this date he got his first major
league hit and they wouldn't really pitch to, him so
he had to bunt to get his first major league
hit here on this. State how about this in nineteen seventy. Six,
yes we'll go to nineteen seventy six and we'll stay with.
Baseball As Mike schmidt would hit four consecutive home runs
(44:39):
for The Philadelphia, phillies driving in eight, runs as The
phillies would overcome a thirteen to two deficit to beat
The Chicago cubs eighteen to sixteen and ten innings there
At Wrigley. Field, yeah that's, impressive AND i was a
big fan Of Mike schmidt wasn't a big fan Of Philadelphia.
Phillies that might not make my wife, happy BUT i
(45:03):
did Like Mike. Schmidt he was one of the great
ones there in baseball, there especially in THE Nl. East
how about this nineteen eighty, Three Nolan ryan would strike
out his three, thousand five hundredth batter on this date
and he would go on to set the strikeout record
at over fifty seven hundred. Strikeouts, Yeah Nolan ryan is
(45:28):
a guy that AGAIN i don't think people really understand
just how Good Nolan ryan was when you look back
at his career, again seven hundred and fourteen, strikeouts and
he also holds the record for the most no hitters
in a career with. Seven this guy was an iron
man and would not want to come out of the.
(45:50):
Game there's plenty of stories as far as managers coming
out trying to take him out and he would just
tell him, no it's not, happening and they would go
back and sure, enough he proved them.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
Wrong So Nolan ryan.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
Being able to do something, spectacular being able to obviously
have set the strikeout, record but on this date he
had his three, thousand five hundred there and then also nineteen,
eight nineteen ninety, Five excuse, Me Wayne gretzky would reach two,
thousand five hundred career points when he would set up
a power play goal there in The king's. Loss excuse
(46:25):
me To. Calgary but he would go on to set
the scoring record at over two, thousand six, hundred and
nobody's coming close to.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
THAT i Know.
Speaker 1 (46:33):
Alisvechkin was able to break the goal, scoring but he's
not going to break the overall, scoring that is for,
certain all. Right that is This thursday, edition Another Richmond
Weaver show presented By Ingles. Markets have a Great easter
and we will talk to you On.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Monday
