the top twenty five percent of podcastsin the world. I am calling this

trying to get myself on track asI need to kind of refocus myself,

(02:38):
listen to and download the rest ofour podcast. I'm truly humbled. I'm
I'm just a low life trying tolive the high life, and a guy
from Joelsburg, Colorado is trying toreach out and touch the lives of people,

(02:59):
and thanks to you, we've donethat. So means the world to
me. It does, and Ireally appreciate you. And with that said,
I'm going to get started on NewYear's resolutions. I'm going to give
you some typical New Year's resolutions.I don't I try not to make New
Year's resolutions simply because they're so difficultto live up to. There's some that

(03:22):
we all try to say we're goingto do better at, but you know,
we need to just focus and bethankful for what we have and try
to be better. That's a prettygood New Year's resolution, right. I've
been very blessed this year. I'vegot two beautiful grand babies that entered our
lives this year. Madden Robert Norwoodcame to us in February of this year.

(03:47):
Harper Marie Dick came to us inMarch. So a lot to be
thankful for. And next year they'llbe over a year old. Wow.
But anyway, here are the typicalNew Year's resolutions. Every year, millions
of people make New Year's resolutions, hoping to spark positive change. The recurring

(04:13):
themes each year include a more activeapproach to health and fitness, improve finances,
and learning new things for personal andprofessional development. I'm one of those.
So let's go through these. Youknow, making resolutions or goal setting
is like having your own personal cheerleaderrooting for you. The one thing you
have to remember is that most peopledo not succeed with their New year's resolution.

(04:40):
A recent study showed that only fortysix percent of people stick to one
or more resolution. That means overfifty percent fail. Yeah that, I'm
sorry to say it that way.Fifty percent say I see it. At
the gym beginning of the year, there's a lot of new members. They

(05:00):
come in for about two or threeweeks. My buddies and I are all
grumming. Who are these new people? After about three weeks, they're gone.
So making the resolutions and sticking tothem are the goal. That's the
key, all right. So chancesare more than a couple of the top

(05:21):
ten most common resolutions will look familiarto you. I'm going to go through
these, and then I want totalk about ways that you can improve your
chances of at least accomplishing one ormore of your goals. All right,
First one for everybody on most everybody'slist is to exercise more exercise. Oh,

(05:43):
I thought you said extra fries I'mso sorry. No, I'm just
kidding. I have a t shirtthat says that everybody wants to exercise more.
It's very simple. All you haveto do is walk. Walking is
good for you, it's easier onthe hips and back running is go out
and walk for twenty minutes to day. We can all do it. It's

(06:05):
not that difficult. Oh, I'mjust too tired from work. I'm too
wore out from this. Make agoal. Either get up in the morning
and go for a walk with afriend or a family member, or do
it after work and do it rightaway. That's the first one. The
second one is and everybody wants thisas well, especially me. I just

(06:29):
tell people right now and putting onmy winter coat. Lose weight, of
course, and the holiday, theholidays are not the time to try to
go on a diet. I lovemy buddy Danny Vallmer, my partner in
my morning business here. He makesthe absolute best Christmas treats I have ever
had, and he always brings usover a bunch and my wife and I

(06:50):
fight over who gets who gets what. So that's start the new year out.
Make a resolution, take tiny stepsand achieve a goal. Number three
is to get organized. I've hadthat resolution for about forty years. This
is the year that I'm going tostart it. Yeah, right, Learn

(07:15):
a new skill or a new hobby. Of course, there's always new skills
and new hobbies. I don't carehow old you are. I'm older and
I learned to podcast at a laterage, so you can always learn a

(07:35):
new skiller, new hobby. Howto conversation with my wife. Just the
other day, one of my favoritehobbies is gardening. After the first of
the year, when all the holidaystuff gets put away, I start walking
through Walmart Low's Home depot, andwhen they have seeds out, I just

(07:55):
stand and stare at them. Ilove gardening, So learn a new skill
or a hobby. Those of youthat don't garden, learn to garden.
I promise you fresh vegetables taste onehundred times better than store bought. So
the fifth one is live life tothe fullest. I think I've been guilty

(08:16):
of not doing that. I thinkI've worked so much that I've missed a
lot of things. But I've madea point now to enjoy each and every
day, each and every moment Iget to see my grandson Madden fairly often,
not often enough, but God,I just love holding him and hugging

(08:37):
him. He is so much fun. And my wife as well too.
I think we all take our spousesfor granted. And I got a slap
in the face, not by her, but I realized that she deserved better
than what I was giving her.So I'm making a new Year's resolution to
be better to my wife and family. So sixcess, save more money,

(09:03):
spend less money. You know what, Making money is easy. Keeping it's
a hard part. That that's true. Keeping it is the hard part.
So we all want to save moremoney. We all want to have more
money. I keep playing the lotto. One of these days I'm gonna win
the lotto. I did once.I want twelve dollars. I called my
wife and I said pack the bagswere heading for None, which is ten

(09:26):
miles away. Number seven is quitsmoking. I coming up, I will
be celebrating my thirty third anniversary ofbeing nicketine free. At one point in
time, I was chewing three cansof school a day, and if I

(09:50):
couldn't have school, I would smokecigarette after cigarette after cigarette. So you
can do it. I did itwith no help. I went cold turkey.
It was a bitch. But youcan do it. I believe in
you. Eight. Spend more timewith family and friends. Again, I

(10:11):
spend a lot of time with family, but there are good friends that I
just don't see enough. And I'mgoing to make a goal my wife and
I both in the upcoming year tospend more time with friends and family as
well too. But number nine travelmore. We like simple trips Grand Lake

(10:37):
Manitou Springs, but it'll be twentyyears that my wife and I have been
married in the upcoming year, sowe may go someplace special. We might.
And the last one is, andI'm very bad about this, to
read more. I do not readbooks. Sorry, I'm sorry to say

(10:58):
that. Now I bought a lotof children's books from my grandchildren and I'm
going to read with them. Thefirst one was my book that I have
on finance and economics. I thinkevery one year old ought to learn finance
and economics. Of course, I'mbeing funny, of course, But there
you have the top ten most commonresolutions. You can add your own to
it. Exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skiller

(11:24):
hobby, live life to the fullest, save more money, spend less money,
quit smoking, spend more time withfamily and friends, travel more,
and read more. I do liketo read national newspapers. I get on
every day and I try to informmyself the Wall Street Journal, the New
York Times, Atlanta Constitution Journal.I read a lot of newspaper articles I

(11:48):
do. I like that. Soanyway, let's talk about just a few
ways before I end this podcast. And again, thank you again so very
much for listening in about how toget yourself ready to make these changes.
You need to mentally prepare for change. Changing ingrained habits changing is noisy tasks.

(12:11):
So before diving headfirst into your newyear goals, it's important to take
a step back and get ready forthat upcoming change. It's like anything,
if you're going to do it,you've got to prepare for it. You
can't just say, oh, well, you know what, I'm going to
quit smoking. When I decided toquit chewing, I quit one hundred times.

(12:33):
Eleven o'clock at NiFe, I wouldtake my last chew, dump the
can out, say I'm done.About two o'clock in the morning. I
was thinking, thank Heaven, forseven to eleven they stay open twenty four
hours. I'll quit tomorrow, sobe prepared. The second idea is set
a goal that motivates you. Youwould be surprised how often people set goals

(12:56):
that are not for themselves. Thesegoals could be dictated to or course by
a manager, spouse, parent,or peer pressure. Well, it's nice
to have some external support. Ifyou don't share the same passion, the
resolution has a small chance of succeedingand could be dead on arrival. So

(13:18):
set a goal that motivates you,or set goals that motivate you. There's
a safe bet if your resolutions alignedwith the following your goals, your priorities,
your dreams, your aspirations, thatyou could be successful. Not only

(13:39):
should you align around your innermost desires, but you should also make sure the
resolutions along with top priorities for you. This will lead to a must do
attitude. Not easy to make changesin life. It's not, especially as
you get older. But we canall do little things that can make us

(14:01):
better. Third thing, limit yourresolutions to a manageable amount. Start small.
Small steps lead to big gains.Write anything you want to accomplish for
self improvement persons on a post it. Each post it only gets one discrete

(14:22):
tactic, Place it on a wall, go crazy. Use the many post
its as possible. Group together similarposts. Place topics you feel strongly about
at the top of the wall, place topics you feel at the bottom.
Spend a lot of time thinking aboutthe order of the first three postings.

(14:43):
You've got to let yourself know. And another thing is The fourth one is
be specific, you know, bevery specific. Articulate the resolution as clearly
as possible. For example, quittingsmoking is better than being healthy, while
being healthy is great. The wordingcan be interpreted in many ways. Be

(15:05):
specific lose weight. I want tolose ten pounds this year, or I
want to lose ten pounds in thenext six months, or I want to
go to the gym three times perweek. Be specific about your goals.
Okay. The fifth one is tobreak big goals into smaller goals. Ok

(15:26):
A lot of us tend to beover eager and grandiose when it comes to
resolutions. We have the best ofintentions and may accidentally take on a goal
that is too big to achieve. Thus, it's helpful to divide a big
goal into smaller, smaller goals thatare more achievable. Okay, you know,

(15:48):
If you want to travel, youdon't have to go to New York
City tomorrow. If you live inColorado, go to South Dakota. The
Black Kills are fantastic. Go toGraham. We love Grand Lake. But
break those big goals into smaller goals, one step at a time. You
can do this one step at atime. All right, any questions?

(16:15):
So far, y'all doing good?Yeah? All right? Sixth and this
is so critical. Write down yourgoals. Well, it's great to have
goals. It's critical to document themin some way. Again, if you
don't write them down, they're easyto forget. When you write them down,

(16:37):
it helps clarify what you want toachieve. Also, writing establishes intention,
but action needs to be taken toachieve your resolution. Having a written
account of your goals is a constantreminder to take action. Written goals can
also act as a filter and guidinglight for what opportunities you want to pursue.

(17:02):
Also, documented goals will help youovercome resistance to progress. Look,
it's easy to quit, I'm tellingyou. Losing weight's a hell of a
lot harder than it is to putit on. So and finally, written
goals are a reminder of how faryou've come and what you've achieved. It's
a nice feeding to look back atthe end of next year and know your
resolution has come to fruition. Ifyour goal is to quit smoking, there's

(17:29):
help out there now you can doit. Seventh thing you need to think
about is share your resolutions with others. This makes you accountable. If a
tree falls in the forest and noone's around to hear it doesn't make a
sound. Well, you know what, find some kindred spirits with similar goals.

(17:49):
Talk to them. You know, when my wife and I set goals,
we try to exercise, we tryto lose weight. We share with
each other. We sit down andsay, how's your goal, and no,
well I screwed up. I hada reci's peanut butter cup today.
That's okay, get back on andlet's let's head forward tomorrow. Share your

(18:10):
goals with others. They will helphold you accountable. All right, any
questions so far? I'm just tellingyou right now that new Year's resolutions,
this is the time of the yearwhen we all want to set them.
After about two or three weeks inthe new year, when we realize how
difficult they are to achieve. Alot of us will quit over fifty percent.

(18:33):
Don't be that person. Set agoal, stick with it, achieve
it. Live a life that's veryhealthy and happy for you and your family.
Wow. I got through twenty minutesof New Year's resolutions when I thought
maybe i'd get ten or twelve. But again, it's that time of the
year, and I want to sayfrom my family to you and your family.
