was up to me to give Annaall the details about the hanging Monday and
everything. She'd find out soon enough. Sure was a tough break though,
after coming all this distance and marrya man she'd never seen. Well.
Strolled around town for an hour orso, and then I headed over to
George Billings house, where I'd leftmy things and I was planning to spend
(12:43):
the night with George and his wifeEllen. They offered me to use the
spare room. M nobody home.Well, I picked up the fire part
in the top courts up and Ifound the key onders. There's a note
from Ella too said for me gwinside make himself comfortable. There was a
(13:13):
copy of the Smoke Falls Weekly.Does that on the hall table and skimmed
through it for a couple of minutes. The main article was about the Quincy

Anna, maybe Peter is guilly. No, he is not the Marshall.
Let me talk to Peter. Iask him if he does this awful thing.
He tells me no, Well,Anna, it is no lie.
I can tell a man who lies. It is the truth. What Peter
says. Well, he is afine failure, better even than ah my
(14:26):
sister Rowne Mayer should not expect toomuch. He would be disappointed. But
Peter, he is good and kindand handsome. Oh he's a nice looking
boy, all right, no doubtabout that. And he did not kill
any man. He could not bethe one. Well, he's admitted steal
and South Quincy's money. That iswhy he takes it so we can get
(14:48):
married. They're very wrong to steal, and he must be punished for it.
Well, if he was well onthe steal deal is not to kill,
that is by the hanging. Yeah, that's right. Then you must
keep them from it. M Yeah. I tell Peter that we meet that
you are very nice to me.He says, you be a famous person
with the funny name, ma'am sickshooter. Oh yes, he says,
(15:13):
you will prove he is not guilty. You will talk to Marshall for him.
Oh, well, I don't seewhat talking to Marshall Burke would do.
Please, mister parnsaid, I tellyou something now before I say,
I come to marry Peter because I'min love it him, because of letters,
what he writes, and maybe andit speak the truth. Maybe I
(15:35):

but now it is a truth andmeet him and they talk to him,
and I am in love. Ilove him very much. You must believe
me, mister Parsick. Sure,Anna, Sure, I believe you can
you will talk to Marshall. Yeah, well, all right, all right,
(16:03):
I'll talk to her. You arelistening to The six Shooter starring Jane
Stewart as Britt puntsit the Texas cowpolk who's name has become legend throughout the
(16:26):
West now at two of the storyand a Nordquist. When I left down
at the hotel, I went overto seeing that Burke. His office was
in the front part of the jailwhere they we're keeping Pete. Kilgrin Nad
(16:47):
had only been marshal for a fewmonths, but he'd had a couple of
years deputy experience, so he knewthe job and he was sort of a
man that usually made a good marshalor two. He's quiet, not looking
for trouble, but take care ofit when the time came. I sure
felt terrible, brit when she camein here and told me who she was
and what she wanted. Yeah,I let her talk to Childrin sigured it
(17:10):
was at least I could do.This seemed to make things worse though he
convinced her that he was innocent andI was out to get him. Oh
well, no, nobody's gonna bleedthat. Ned that girl might believe it.
Yes, I wouldn't blame her ifshe did that. Children's a pretty
smooth tucker. Yeah, ned yea. I that there couldn't be any doubt
(17:30):
about it, could there? Imean, as I understand it, Pete
says that Quincy was already dead whenhe got there. I was sure he
did, and that he took themoney because so it was just a darned
tempt him. I don't stand thereason that somebody murders sat and then go
off without breaking into a strong box. Now, does it, brit No?
(17:51):
No, I guess it doesn't.Besides, Sarah Henderson seemed Pete riding
away from says iusand not five minutesafter Sure to shut d You rest him
the same day, and I cameinto town right after I found Sessed body.
Sarah had send for me. Shehad a feeling something was wrong.
Calvin was at Bud Winkler's place,That's where found him. He still have
(18:11):
a gun on him. No,he claimed he didn't known the forty five.
That's what the slugg and says.Chess was forty five. We see.
Of course Pete had plenty of timeto get rid of the gun,
and there are plenty places between CessRanch and town where he could have ditched
it. Wow, that's true enough. Anybody ever remember seeing Pete with a
forty five? Nothing I knew ofNo, Wait a minute, but you
(18:33):
ain't taking pete side in this thing, right, Well, I'm not taking
anybody's side, and Nat, I'mjust curious. That's all. This was
a cold blooded killing. You're goingout to Sess Place, You'll see.
He was an old man, buthe's sure put up a darn good fight
for his life, and from thelooks of things, he went on fighting
after he was shot. You know, I just might take you up on
that invitation there about going out toSess place. See you later. Oh,
(19:11):
it was gotten on toward dusk whenI reached Seth Quincy's ranch. Who
whoa? I walked up the frontsteps and tried at the door. It
wasn't locked. Seth had lived alone. That looked like anybody then just straighten
(19:32):
things up since the murder so there. Sure it had been a wheal of
a fight in the parlor up abroken chair and some stains on the sofa,
and pieces of a lamp that hadbeen smashed against the fireplace. Strong
box didn't seemed to be there.I figured they probably needed that for the
evidence. Well. I poked aroundfor about half an hour, and then
(19:56):
I headed back to town. Themoon was starting to come up as we
hit a band in the trail andthe dog gunes. Thing happened. A
scar was usually as sure footage ofthe mountain goat, and not a bit
skitty she either. But when abat came winging out of some cotton woods,
(20:19):
I darned your sail white out ofthe satellite. The sam Hill has
gone. Wall scar come on now? And that's when I saw it buried
under a pot of leaves and alittle gully. The first thing that cut
my eye was the moonlight glinting offa piece of metal. Easy, easy,
(20:41):
scark easy because it could have beenalmost anything, a broken spur or
part of a farm tool, anything. But even before I pulled it out
from underneath the leaves and the dirt, I knew it was a gun.
(21:15):
Yeah, who was there? It'smade Bret Ponson you the minute I think
you never came, mister parts.Could I get so, Gary? Well,
I'm sorry it took me so long. It doesn't matter now that you're
here. You talked to Marshall Burke. Yeah, yeah, I talked to
him. And you're telling Peter didnot kill this man. You're telling Peter
is not guilty, Nonna. Icouldn't tell him that. How do you
(21:40):
see Peter is guilly. I foundthis gun gun he used to kill Seth
Quincy, was hidden in the galleyabout a mile from the farmhouse. It
didn't have begieve you. I gaveit to Marshall Burke. You can see
it for yourself. You want togo over there. Pete's initials right on
(22:00):
the handle. Only one bullet hadbeen fired. It's the right gun.
There's no doubt. What goodn beAnna, I listen to me. The
only reason I'm telling you this iswell, after Monday, there won't be
anything you can do about Peter. It'll be better if you just forget him.
Heaven not forget you. Oh,it won't be easy, I know
(22:22):
that. But as long as youknow he's guilty, as long as there
isn't any doubt in your mind, well, maybe it's for the best that
you found out before. Well, you try to tell me, lie,
Annah, this is the truth. You say. You will show me a
gun. You say it belongs toPeter well Es. Peter say, well,
of course he denies it to ah I guess there's nothing more I
(22:48):
can do about it. You lieto me, you and Marshall. You
try to make me think that whenI love it the criminal. Do not
understand what country they talk about?American? They say, is this country
in the world? But this islied too, very justice, freish freedom.
(23:11):
They hang a man for he doesnot do no an It's a terrible,
terrible country. Maybe shall never comehere, Maybe shall never leave me
home. They have no friend,no husband, may be alone in country
today. Hate. Oh, I'mI'm sorry. And if there's any way
(23:33):
I can help you, if ifyou need some money, he runs no
here from American Wow. Oh goodnight, Anna. The light was still
on in the Marshall's office, soI stopped off, and I asked that
(23:55):
if I could go and have alittle talk with Pete. He didn't seem
to think of doing much good, and to tell you the truth, I
didn't think so either, but Icouldn't see it do any harm. Try.
Pete was a tall, stringy man, about twenty five or so,
toeheaded with the yellow mustache, kindof a pointed chin. All right,
(24:18):
Britta, leave here, you wantnot just give me? You? Nice
man? Sharing popular today, ain'tI? Britt? I guess you might
call it that, Pete. Well, but I thought maybe by now you'd
feel like coming out with the truth. Told you the truth before. I've
(24:40):
never seen that gun in my wholelife. I ain't the only man with
those initials. M I Z.What's the difference if I'm gonna be hung
anyway? Well, the difference is, Anna, Anna. She believes you,
Pete. She believes you're innocent, and as long as you go on
saying so, she's going to keepon believing it even after. It's kind
(25:07):
of nice to have somebody believe inyour brit nobody else does. Now,
Pete, you weren't railroad, andyou had a fair judge and a fair
trial. But Anna doesn't realize that. She's young, she's upset, and
she's in a strange country. Shewanted to come here pretty bad. I
had a lot of dreams about thiscountry and knowledge I don't those dreams returning
(25:27):
sour. It's a good thing shewoke up. Well, I just don't
happen to agree with you on that. I think this is a pretty good
place to live. But Anna won'tfind that out, not if she goes
on feeling this way. Well, what do you expect me to do?
Confess to murdering seth Quincy just sosAnna can appreciate the good old USA?
(25:48):
You ask me, this country ain'tso hot anyway. Well, there are
a lot of folks who put uppretty good argument about that. Your own
father, you're just wasting your breath. Yeah, yeah, I guess any
man who kills sequency and cold bloodthe way it wasn't cold blood. I
(26:11):
didn't even you want, Pete, all right, But I ain't telling you
this because of I don't even knowwhy I'm telling you. I needed money,
Branna, so we could get married. I wanted to make a good
showing, like I told him theletters I wrote it. Everybody said Seth
(26:33):
had plenty of cash, that hewouldn't put none of it in the bank
because he'd had a fight with misterPutnam and he kept it all in that
strong boxing. I thought he'd goneto town. I never figured he'd come
back and catch me. While Iwas robbing him. I tried to hold
him off with my gun, buthe just kept coming. I had the
fire even then. He didn't stop, not until Well, Pete, what
(27:02):
we want now? I want youto tell this to Anna. You can
tell her. I'm afraid that wouldn'tdo any good. He's real pretty anchie.
I never figured on her being surprity. She was surprised. Yeah,
I've been writing her for the lasttwo years. It's pause the idea he
(27:26):
knew her ken back in Sweden.Wouldn't any girl around here that, at
least Wade Night I was interested in. Huh, Well, Pete, I'll
tell her, but it wasn't coldblood bread, not the way you think.
Yeah, Na, nad, I'mall done. Air Wow. Pete
(27:59):
finally ex lame things to Anna, and I guess she saw what had happened
in kind of a different light.Mane. Anyway, she stayed on and
smoked falls And last time I wasthrough there, she was working over in
Wendy Night's cafe. She changed somethingtoo, was she wore her hair where
she dressed. But she was stilljust pretty the picture of that Georgia.
(28:23):
And you know something Wendy had changed. He wasn't talking so much. A
folk said that that was Anne's doing, that she'd asked him to simmer down.
A back was her. If shewas able to get Wendy to stop
talking, even for a couple ofminutes, if she had that much influence
(28:44):
on him, well, you neverknow that. The six Shooter is a
