Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good day Time push around with hero Slash and Philly's
take Time. We're here to dissect the storm. He's a
y a sub material ten thousand five. Well, it seems
like it's going to be an x Men centric week
for me. Earlier this Monday, we had wilvering number fifty
(00:20):
on the Unsmoking Issues podcast. Me, Evan and Chris got
together and talked about that, and then yesterday myself, Evan
and Chris did a commentary for the X Men movie
celebrating twenty five years since its release, which released today
on small screeners over on Chris's channel. So what we're
(00:43):
going to do is take a look at the X
Men prequels that came out in the comics. Their movie
prequels are the X Men movie prequels that came out
in the comics. They had three of them that I
can find here. So we've got Wolverine, We've got Rogan,
we've got Magneto too, heroes, one villain central to the movie.
(01:04):
Let's start with Wolverine and see what we get here.
This looks like it was released in August of two thousand,
written by Jay Farber. It's either it's probably Farber, Jay
Farber Karl Waller on pencils inked by Mark McKenna, Letter
by Chris Eliopolis, Color art by Atomic Paintbrush. And yeah,
(01:26):
here we go. Let's get into X Men. Wolverine, an
X Men movie prequel. See where we're at. It looks
like we're opening up and the lions Head Bar and
Calm Loops, British Columbia, Canada. I told the guys in
the commentary that I wanted a truck like Wolverine's truck camper.
Oh wow, that's gotta be right before the movie starts,
(01:47):
because they're talking about Gene Gray on the floor of
the Senate. Wolverene is in this bar and he's asking
the bartender to look at a picture, and he said,
is this the bar this photo was taken at? Wolverine
just punches a crap out of a guy. A patron
(02:08):
has giving him a little bit of a hard time,
talking about how you gotta face. That's pretty hard to forget,
and then Wolverine proceeds to punch the crap out of
him and the guy lands on the pool table. He's
getting into a bar fight. Here people swinging pool sticks
at him. News report about what happened on the Senate
(02:28):
floor and quotes from Professor Xavier. Farena is laying waste
to some people face with a shotgun again, and he
does the exact same thing in the movie cuts it
in half. We're flashing over to Professor Xavier School for
Gifted Youngsters. The news report upsets Cyclops so much as
(02:48):
him and Professor Xavier and the Storm and Jean Gray
are standing around watching it, he zaps it with his
ibeams and explodes the TV. He is sick of hearing
mutants dissected on the news, like we're freaks. They're in
their black costumes, by the way, for sure, are we? Yeah? Okay,
So now we're with the Brotherhood, which I think we
(03:13):
determined was not called the Brotherhood in the film, but Magneto, Mystique,
Toad and Sabertooth and Mystiques on an impression of Charles Xavier.
Oh wow, Sabertooth is actually talking in this. He's given
Mistique talking to because she was goofing around, So Sabertooth
(03:34):
has some dialogue here. Maureen is Logan plagued by the
dreams of the experiments they did to him in order
to give him his Adamantium lace. Bones wakes up screaming,
who's this woman. I'm kind of curious about this not
a part because they're in the dream. He sees this
(03:56):
vision of a woman. I love you, Logan, always come
back to me. Ah, this isn't touched on in the movie.
I don't think. I just watched it yesterday. There's Logan's
dog tags. That's sad. Of course, he's in his little camper.
He says, I'm so tired tired of criss crossing this
flaming country. I'm tired of not knowing who I am.
(04:16):
He starts crying and he can't remember the woman in
the picture. He hears something outside. He goes outside. He
finds a young lady who's speaking Chinese and he replies
in Chinese, not realizing he knew how to speak Chinese.
She does speak English, and now he's asking her about
her name. She can't remember, so now we have two
people who have amnesia. Logan's grilling her to see how
(04:39):
much she remembers. She does not want to go to
the police, so Logan agrees to help her out head
down to downtown Vancouver. The following morning. He takes her
to breakfast and the police show up. She freaks out
and he's like, okay, let's go, and he steals a motorcycle.
Oh and a daring bit of a escape. He ramps
(05:02):
onto a leaving ferry, throwing the attendant the keys as
they land on the boat. Now we've got two ladies,
and I'm really curious who they are. I know, we're
getting ready to set up what's about to happen in
the movie. We got some neat two thousand digital effects
here on the water. Like they didn't just draw the
water here, they put in some CG not CGI, because
(05:24):
there's some computer graphics here. Love to see how they
were playing with that in the two thousands. Anyway, we
got two ladies that I have no idea who they're
gonna be, and we got to set ourselves up for
this movie. Let's just take a look to see how
this all fits together. We're back at Vancouver later that evening.
The police are at the ferry terminal and asking a
(05:46):
guy with a bread truck to open up the back. Yeah,
they're looking for Wolverine and that girl. They are hitching
a ride under the bread truck. Look at that. Oh,
I didn't know there was a Chinatown section of Vancouver.
Logan's brought her to China to town to try and
jog her memory. They're starting to grow fond of each other.
They start holding hands. Little kid has a tumble on
(06:09):
his bike and she runs over to take care of him.
Logan's like, maybe you have a kid, You're pretty good
at that. Nope, there's some shady people calling in because
they've seen the girl. He says, we found her. So
they go to sit down and eat. She goes to
the restroom and she's gone an awful long time. Wolverine
(06:30):
gets up and can smell cologne in the lady's room.
He opens it up, and sure enough, she is trying
to escape the grip of three mobsters. Wolverine he's letting
loose here in the bathroom. Wolverine is taking care of
business against some of these guys. Big fight. He starts
taking him out. We got a snicked and this is
(06:52):
kind of indicative of some of the stuff that you
may have heard about the Comics Code Authority, which this
is too thousand. I think it's still got a I
think it's still got a grip on Marvel Comics at
the time. Let's scroll up and take a look. Yes,
it is right there. Wolverin puts his claws into this guy.
(07:13):
You cannot see the claws. You see Wolverine getting shot
in the shoulder while he's punching this guy. The claws
are going in, but they are not protruding from the clothing.
I think that was one thing that they said could
not happen. It's like the bullseye electra thing. I just
learned this not too long ago. But the SI could
not penetrate her the clothing in the back as if
(07:35):
it was run through, which you know that it was.
But you could draw the clothing like stretching around the
blade as if so. It could not break the clothing,
but you could see it protrude. What a weird, weird code. Anyway,
snicked down, goes Mobster number five. I don't know if
he has disclosed a lot about himself to this ladier.
(08:00):
Not one of the mobsters surviving calls the boss. So
I think we're dealing with a mutant. Oh goodness, we're
sending for Silver Samurai. Looks like Wolverine and his lady
friend have found a hotel to hold up in. She's
concerned about him getting shot on the shoulder, and now
(08:20):
she's taken a good look at the wound that is
almost completely healed. She asks what he is, and he
is coming clean with everything. Tomorrow morning, she's going to
be leaving, so she won't be troubling Wolverine anymore. He's like,
wait a second, are you doing this because I'm a mutant,
And she's like, no, I just want you to I
don't want you to get hurt anymore. I'm not the
(08:41):
kind of person to let someone else fight my battles
for me, she says. They exchange some words, grab each
other's hands, and then embrace. Silver Samurai over in Japan
gets the call and is hopping a jet to head
over to Vancouver. In the middle of the night, our lady,
he wakes up screaming, much like Logan did earlier. She
(09:03):
says she has a word in her head, Orchid, but
she does not any idea what it means. Next morning,
they get ready to leave the hotel and the police
catch him. So Wolverine and I can't remember. They haven't
given her name yet, but they have been arrested and
they're now at Vancouver Police headquarters. Oh so, in a
interrogation room. They're talking to her a couple of detectives
(09:26):
here or talking to her, and they're like, so, your
memory hasn't come back yet. She's like, no, it hasn't.
He's like, well, maybe this will help, and he hands
her a wallet. She opens it up, sees her id
in there, along with a badge. Apparently she was a
cop whose name is Natsue Tashima. Oh boy, here we go.
(09:47):
We got some backstory on her. You'd infiltrated the criminal
organization of a gangster known as Kohama. You're in deep,
but then you vanished when you missed your last two
check ins. We put out a bulletin. That's why the
police were after you. Apparently she had something important to
tell them that she can't remember what it is. And
now they're going to go talk to Wolverine, who, by
(10:09):
the way, Wolverine's haircut here compared to the movie very
very comic book here. I don't think they lay into
this in the movie. I could be wrong, but listen.
Gray haired, grizzled detective is interrogating Wolverine. Wolverine. He asks
about his dog tags, and Wolverine grabs his dog tags
(10:30):
and says, you see a lot of dog tags in
your day kid and this old cops like, what are
you talking about? I'm the same age as you are,
and Wolverine's like, not even close. So they've just Wolverine,
of course, is not being as pleasant self, and they
decide to throw him into a holding cell with bars
(10:51):
on the windows, just bars on the windows. Wolverine claws out, snicked,
cuts the bars off the window, and escapes. I'm starting
to not trust these cops for some reason. They've gotten
Natsu in the back of their car and they're saying
they're taking her to a safe house. Oh not. Sue
recognizes the smell of some cologne. This older detective grabs
(11:13):
his gun as soon as she starts to put the
pieces together, shoots his partner in the head and Knatsu's
able to grab the gun, realizing yep, he's on Cohama's payroll,
and now we have an out of control car. While
he's firing trying to kill her, she's keeping the gun
pointed away from her. Car crashes, she's out and he,
(11:34):
the older detective Genesee, has her in his arms. He
commandeers a vehicle and puts her in it. Later that night,
he takes her to Vancouver Shipyards, we get to meet
mister Kohama. Al Kohama reveals that Genesee tried to kill
her and she jumped overboard and experienced caused the trauma
(12:00):
that led to her amnesia. Says, I've had all my
men looking for you. They would have had you last
night at the restaurant if it weren't for your guardian angel.
Now he's brought his friend to deal with her protector
Silver Samurai. Let's see. Here comes Wolverine with a silenced
Uzie in one hand, no shirt, jumping in here, taking
(12:21):
out detective Genesee. Throws the gun to Natsu and he
is off to fight the Silver Samurai. Kohama is leaving.
Natsu has gone after Wolverine, getting the upper hand here
slices the sword in half with his claws. Wolverine cuts
his sword. The silver samurais grabbed Wolverine's claws with his
(12:44):
hands and squeezes them together, and he starts using his
mutant powers. I channel my energies through any conductive material
like your metal claws. For instance. He's racked with pain, screaming.
Mohama gets the on Natsu. It's all falling apart for
our heroes here but just as he's ready to pull
(13:05):
the trigger, Wolverine shows up behind him, and we get
another snicked right into the back, not protruding the clothes though,
can't tear the clothes, and he tosses him overboard. Now
the thing is is that we saw him fighting Silver Samurai,
getting the crap electrocuted out of him, and now he's
just like, Okay, all right, thank god. I thought Silver
(13:28):
Samurai was going to kill you, Nope, And I thought
Kohama was going to kill me, nope. I mean, could
you just maybe have explained a little bit how you
got rid of Silver Samurai? He looked like you were
on the ropes. Dude. Who's this random dude with a gun?
All right? So he picks up the Suzi some machine
gun whatever and just unloads it into Logan, not to
(13:49):
unloads it into the shooter, and Wolverine has fell into
the water. A couple days later, Natsu shows up on
Logan's camper truck. She's brought him a file folder, a
file folder to help her to help him try to
find that woman in the photograph. So she's done some
(14:10):
research for him and tried to narrow down some of
the people that it could be the embrace and Kiss
once more. And now four days later, as he's looking
through this report, he's in Alberta, Canada walking into a bar.
All right, so follow me here. Wolverine walks into a bar,
hands the bartender of the picture and says, does this
look like this picture was taken out front? Bartender looks
(14:32):
at and says, yeah, it does. Do you recognize the
woman here? No, do not? And oft in the back
well behind Wolverine there's a woman who's getting like, the
only place you're going wash with us? Go get some
more beers, and she goes, okay, okay, I need to
use the lady's room anyway. As she walks up, she
(14:52):
gets next to Wolverine, looks at him and says, listen,
can you help me? And that's the end the thing.
The bar of the panel says a beginning. I'm gonna
look at these next prequels. Maybe they all run together.
I guess we do open up in Alberta, Canada in
the movie, don't we. So it's the same bar that
Rogue finds him, which maybe this is supposed to be
(15:14):
Rogue in the bar here, and she's getting accosted by
some Men. Maybe the end of Rogue is going to
be the same as what we get here at the
end of Wolverine. So there you go, folks, the X
Men movie prequel Wolverine. Stay tuned because next up is
(15:35):
going to be X Men Rogue.
